A Visit to George Floyd Square
from June 14 - 20, 2021
photography by Kathleen Hinkel
On Juneteenth in 2020, photographer and frequent StreetWise contributor Kathleen Hinkel visited E. 38th St. and Chicago Ave. in Minneapolis, Minnesota, now known as George Floyd Square, where George Floyd was murdered, now an ongoing protest and memorial site. Since May 26, 2020, the day after George Floyd's death, the area around the intersection has been free from cars (and police), with protesters occupying the site daily. Signs around the area call George Floyd Square a sacred space for community, public grief and protest.
