The parade will also be broadcast live on ABC7 Chicago from 10 a.m.- noon. The excitement continues at the Back to School Festival with family-friendly activities, giveaways, food, and entertainment designed to uplift and prepare students for a successful school year. Made in the Shade!

‘Living in the Shade:’ Open Space and Public Housing

“Living in the Shade” highlights the significant role of open space in the daily lives of millions of public housing residents who have called New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) developments home. It explores different facets of this unique environment through large-scale architectural models, archival and contemporary photographs, renderings and site plans, and community testimonials and photographs. It assesses the successes and failures of NYCHA’s landscaping efforts over a 90-year period, telling the story of how open spaces were first designed for public housing residents in the 1930s and how they have been reimagined over the years to meet changing community needs. The exhibition runs through November 12 at the National Public Housing Museum, 919 S. Ada St. FREE.

Chamber Music for All!

Adding to the intimacy of these events and helping make chamber music a deeply personal experience, each musical evening includes a themed reception where audience members are invited to mix and mingle with the performers. Tickets are $50 at guarnerihall.org, with student discounts available.

Still Relevant!

'Oh, These Times!'

“Oh, These Times!” a one-act play written in 1772 by famed Russian empress Catherine the Great. In this satirical comedy where every character lives life in the panic lane and practices the opposite of what they preach, a maid attempts to help her naive lady marry the sweet Mr. Milksop, while dodging her grandmother’s fears of lower class social climbers. From catty gossips to sheltered virgins, no one seems happy with their station –– and their schemes and complaints pile up. Preempting Chekhov’s darkly yearning comedic sense by 100 years, “Oh, These Times!” is a searing reflection of our modern-day social anxieties and the farces we put ourselves through to soothe them. One-night-only staged reading, Tuesday, August 12, 7:30 p.m. at The Understudy Coffee & Books, 5531 N. Clark St. Tickets are pay-what-you-can at www.theunderstudy.com

Get Lit & Nerdy!

This is your chance to geek out over your favorites, learn something new, and connect with fellow animation lovers over trivia, art activities, and, of course, booze! This is a 21+ event. Attendees must show a valid photo ID at the door to enter. Tickets are $21.05 (no drinks) or $28.52 (2 drinks included) at americanwritersmuseum.org/ program-calendar/get-lit-drawn-to-life

Spotlighting works by Lisa DeAbreau, Ciarra K. Walters, Lex Marie, Natasha Moustache, and Lola Ayisha Ogbara, the exhibition runs from August 9 - December 14 in the Kanter Family Foundation Gallery on the second floor of the Art Center. FREE

Chicago Game-changer!

‘Community on the Make | Arts of Life 2000-2025’

The Chicagoland non-profit Arts of Life continues celebrating its 25th Anniversary year with its first-ever museum exhibition, “Community on the Make | Arts of Life 2000 – 2025.” This retrospective exhibition features works by over 50 artists, staff, and volunteers who have shaped the Arts of Life community since its founding in 2000, asking audiences to consider: Who is art for? Who gets to influence culture? And how can art become a tool of liberation? The exhibition looks back at the founding mission of Arts of Life—to support artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities—while looking toward its future.
