100 years of autonomy

Unique to Åland Since 1954, Åland has had its own flag, which is a red and yellow cross on a field of blue. Åland’s flag day is celebrated on the last Sunday in April. Åland has its own postal service, Åland Post, which also issues its own stamps. The first stamps were issued on 1 March 1984, and each year approximately 16 new stamp designs are issued. Åland has its own top-level domain, .ax, which is used for websites connected to Åland. Ålanders seen driving out in the world are easy to spot, as Åland issues its own vehicle licence plates. Keep an eye out for ÅL.

Population What a delightful development—more and more people want to live in Åland!

Over the past few years, Åland’s population has increased by 200-300 people, and we have also passed the 30,000 mark!

Nearly 12,000 people live in Mariehamn, Åland’s largest city.

The official language in Åland is Swedish. In addition to the 26,000 Ålanders who have Swedish as their native language, there are 76 different languages spoken in Åland.

Åland is the oldest autonomous region in Europe as well as the smallest. Åland was granted autonomous status in 1921 on the basis of a decision made by the League of Nations in Geneva. A strong movement in Åland had pushed for reunion with Sweden, but Finland did not want to let the island realm go. The decision made in Geneva was a compromise. Åland's first 30-member parliament (today known as the Parliament of Åland) convened for the first time on 9 June 1922, which is celebrated as Åland’s Autonomy Day. The Parliament of Åland passes its own legislation within a number of different areas, including the economy, education, transportation and health care. The Government of Åland, its regional administration offices and the Parliament of Åland are housed in the Åland Government Building, which is located adjacent to the Mariehamn town square.

The idea of “willfulness” has been the lodestar for Ålanders throughout the entire existence of their autonomy, and will continue to be for at least the next 100 years.

Time and currency Åland’s currency is the euro and both Åland and Finland are in the Eastern European time zone.

When it is 12 noon in Sweden, it is 1:00pm in Åland.

Summer parties on the sun deck are among the highlights of the summer months, with live bands, a great atmosphere and refreshing drinks from Bar Båtsman. During the rest of the year, there is live music every day featuring guest artists and the ship’s cruise hosts in the bar Klubb Kuling.

The little pirates on board, in turn, enjoy the fun quiz round and the playroom “Skepp o’ Skoj”, featuring a pirate ship, slide and pirate theme. Parents can sit comfortably in Kafé Käringsund with a good view of the adventures in the pirate room.

THE BEST GOLF COURSE IN FINLAND. In 2024, the Slottsbanan course at the Ålands Golfklubb in Kastelholm was named Finland’s best golf course with record scores in categories such as most beautiful course, best design, and best condition and presentation. In addition, Slottsbanan has entered the list of Europe’s 100 best courses, and the tenth hole is considered one of the best in Europe.

FISHING IN BEAUTIFUL ARCHIPELAGO NATURE. The most popular is pike fishing

with a spinning rod, which is easy to understand. Strong pikes over a metre long are not uncommon. Sea trout fishing attracts fishers who seek a challenge in early spring and late autumn. Spring is high season for whitefish, while summer and autumn are the best time for zander. Perch fishing with spinners and jigs for lively perch is a fun summer activity that suits most people, especially families.

hole courses in Åland. ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST BEAUTIFUL ARCHIPELAGOS Åland consists of a main island in the west and six archipelago municipalities spread out in a lovely formation of islands in the east. The larger ones are inhabited, and you can access them with your own boat or with the island region’s archipelago ferries.

FÖGLÖ. The archipelago village of Degerby de-

veloped during the 15th century thanks to its proximity to King Valdemar’s sailing route. At that time, customs, pilotage, trade, and accommodation were important business activities.

Many reminders remain in the village from that time. To this day, you can stay overnight in the historic courthouse and guesthouse Enigheten, which dates back to the 18th century. The customs guard’s old residence now houses a library and tourist information.

BRÄNDÖ. Jurmo in Åland’s northeastern archipelago is one

of Brändö’s 1,200 islands and a place for those looking for peace and relaxation. The island is easy to visit. You can dock at the guest harbour if you come with your own boat; otherwise, you can take the archipelago ferry from Åva.

Once there, an idyllic archipelago village surrounded by beautiful nature awaits. On the island, long-haired Highland Cattle are a common sight, and they help keep the cultural landscape open.

SOTTUNGA. In recent years, the small harbour in Sottun-

ga has become a lovely meeting place in the archipelago.

Come with the archipelago ferry or with your own boat. There is both a guest harbour and a visitor pier. Play a round of disc golf and finish with a dip in the sea. There is even a diving platform on the quay.

KUMLINGE. This archipelago municipality consists of the

inhabited main islands of Kumlinge, Enklinge, Seglinge, and Björkö, as well as hundreds of other islands. Each island has its own unique nature and character, from coniferous forests on Enklinge in the north to hazel woods on Seglinge in the south. Nature is always close and full of experiences.

You can explore marked hiking trails, go on a kayak tour, play disc golf, or fish from a boat in any season. You are also welcome to round off your day with a good meal at the local restaurants.

KÖKAR. In Åland’s southernmost municipality Kökar, the

myth-surrounded island of Källskär attracts visitors with its interesting glacial formations and unexpected environments created by the Swedish baron Göran Åkerhielm in the 1960s. On a barren island out in the ocean, a Mediterranean garden meets Finnish-Nordic-style buildings. The baron loved guests, and one of them was the writer and artist Tove Jansson. During the high season there are daily guided tours from Hotell Brudhäll.

VÅRDÖ. A trip by cable ferry takes you to the island municipality, Vårdö, known locally as the “enchanted island”. There are many gems to discover here, from market stalls selling new potatoes, vegetables, and flowers to Lasse Eriksson’s ship museum in Grundsunda. In the old telephone booth in Vargata, Åland’s smallest museum highlights the history of the telephone exchange. Be sure to visit author Anni Blomqvist’s home on the island of Simskäla. Her novel about Maja of Stormskerry was made into a film in 2024.

Admission is free. The festival kicks off 2–4 July with Rockabilly Weekend, featuring a classic car show and music from the 50s and 60s. The fun continues 5–12 July with an authentic country atmosphere, dancing, and live music performances.

THE FIRST EVENT ON FÖGLÖ’S SUMMER calendar is the

traditional Midsummer celebration on 19 June, with maypole-raising in three different villages. Föglö Day on 27 June is another highlight with a market and folk music in the Degerby village square. Entertainment is arranged on Tuesdays throughout the summer, and a market featuring vintage tractors and other old engines is planned for 8 August.

July then brings incredible days filled with dancing and music.

The Åland Dance Band Festival, 3–11 July, truly takes the concept of open-air pier dance to a new level. The Nordics’ longest dance band festival celebrates its 5th anniversary this year over 9 vibrant days. The dance floor at the archipelago restaurant Seagram, right by the water, offers friendly vibes and a fantastic atmosphere. Combine the restaurant’s high-quality food and drinks with a spin, or several, on the dance floor by the shore.

Providing the music are some of the best dance bands from Sweden, Finland, and Åland, including Blender, Larz-Kristerz, Lasse Stefanz, Guns Rosor, and Högtryck.

Meanwhile, a country market called Countrytorget offers food, drinks, and music in the village square in the heart of Degerby.

THERE ARE SO MANY SIGHTS worth seeing. In the Middle Ages, King Valdermar’s sailing route went via Kökar, where a seafarers’ chapel and a Franciscan monastery were built on Hamnö. Today you can visit the monastery cellar with relics from the monastic period. At Enklinge in Kumlinge, the archipelago homesteader Hermas tells about the hard life of the fish farmers. Also visit Kumlinge’s church with its impressive chalk paintings. On Vårdö, Åland’s school museum, Seffer’s homestead and Wennström’s general store present older times from different perspectives. On Sottunga, the red chapel, one of three wooden churches on Åland, is worth seeing.

ÅLAND ISLANDS ART MUSEUM PRESENTING ART THROUGH TIME Throughout the year, the Åland Art Museum provides exhibitions presenting various artistic expressions, from contemporary art to Åland’s art history. creation. Together, they present an exhibition that provokes thoughts about perspective, movement, and contemporary life.

THE ÅLAND ISLANDS ART MUSEUM presents Åland art from

a broad perspective, from paintings and sculptures to installations. The art museum’s collective exhibitions depict the art history of Åland in a form that changes every year. In addition, the museum hosts special exhibitions that continuously offer visitors new art impressions and influences. In total, the art museum produces around eight exhibitions each year.

THE AUTUMN EXHIBITIONS FEATURE the Åland-based Swedish-Australian artist Danelle Bergstrom, who, through her paintings, tells the story of the creation of Galeas Emelia and the people behind the work. The final exhibition of 2026 highlights the late Folke Wickström, city architect of Mariehamn. Wickström’s life work is presented in collaboration with the Cultural History Museum of Åland, emphasizing his roles as architect, drawing artist, debater, and visionary.

THE SPRING ART SEASON begins with an exhibition of art-

works on the theme of Time by students from the local art school. After that, Swedish artist Caroline af Ugglas is in turn to offer the viewer a view into her very own expression and colour language, which she calls antidepressism.

THE CULTURAL HISTORY MUSEUM guides you through a chronological story from the time of the first arrivals to today’s global and self-governing society. Along the way, you will learn that the tenacious islanders have hunted seals, subsisted on agriculture and fishing, sailed the world’s seas and been a part of Sweden, Russia and now Finland.

The museum also introduces Kastelholm Castle, Eckerö Post and Customs House and Bomarsund Fortress, and ties historical clues together into a single story.

CHILDREN ALSO ENJOY Museum of Cultural History, which they can explore alongside the mascot Kluris. Kluris’s time machine has unfortunately broken down, and Kluris needs the children’s help to fix it. At the same time, the children are taken on an exciting journey through Åland’s history. The museum also has a shop corner, inspired by an old country store, which is always a favourite.

ÅLAND CHURCH TEXTILES, with their long tradition and strong symbolic value, open this year’s special exhibitions.

From the oldest chasuble dating back to the 1600s to contemporary altar cloths, the collection tells a story of faith, community, and creative joy. Many of these beautiful textiles were acquired with the help of Åland’s Martha associations or crafted by local artists and artisans.

Summer then takes you into the world of folklore. An exhibition about Åland’s mythical beings presents stories and legends collected a hundred years ago. Discover the mermaid who brings both luck and misfortune and the elves dancing in the mist, and learn about today’s digital trolls on social media.

1. BOMARSUND In Bomarsund, you can visit the ruins of the Russian fortress, the construction of which began in 1830 by order of the Tsar. The structure was later blown up by French and British troops during the Crimean War in 1854. The visitor centre presents the rise and fall of Bomarsund through films and selected objects. We recommend a visit to the exhibition before you explore the ruins of the area.

6. THE JAN KARLSGÅRDEN OPEN-AIR MUSEUM Get a vivid insight into Åland’s cultural history at Jan Karlsgården. Here you will find older buildings from different parts of Åland, moved here to show what rural life used to look like. In summer, the open air museum is filled with traditional handicrafts, traditional baked bread for purchase, and activities for children.

2. ECKERÖ POST AND CUSTOMS HOUSE Today, this impressive stone building from 1828 is a meeting place for design, craft, and history. This summer, the final part of the permanent exhibition POST & CUSTOMS & HOUSE opens, focusing on the building itself, its architects, and how its activities have changed over the years. Upstairs, visitors will find this year’s summer exhibition featuring fashion and interior design made from upcycled textiles, along with a collective exhibition presenting Åland craft and design.

7. KASTELHOLM CASTLE Kastelholm Castle was in its prime in the 1500s, when Åland was part of Sweden and ruled by king Gustav Vasa and his sons. For several hundred years, the area was Åland’s administrative centre, with both royalty and other distinguished persons passing through. Many people have also been imprisoned here. Museum hosts and guides dressed in period clothing bring the stories to life, from royal feasts to dramatic tales of witch trials.

3. VITA BJÖRN PRISON MUSEUM Vita Björn (meaning The White Bear) is Finland’s oldest preserved prison.

Here, you can follow the everyday lives of the prisoners and see how attitudes toward crime and punishment have changed over the centuries. From the brutal whipping post in the exercise yard to something closer to today’s correctional system.

8. THE MONASTERY CELLAR ON KÖKAR The ruins of a Franciscan monastery can be found on Hamnö, a reminder of medieval pilgrimages. In the monastery cellar, you can see finds from excavations and get a sense of the spiritual life that once shaped the island.

4. ARCHIPELAGO HOMESTEAD MUSEUM HERMAS On the island of Enklinge in Kumlinge lies Hermas, a well-preserved archipelago farm where the life of a fishing farmer is presented through its buildings and objects. The farm tells the story of everyday life shaped by the sea and the changing seasons.

9. THE RADIO BEACON ON RÖDHAMN Looking out towards the sea, the lighthouse containing a radio beacon on Rödhamn still stands. In the past, the transmitter helped sailors navigate; today, the lighthouse includes an exhibition that tells the story of the pilot service, the beacon’s history, and the archipelago during the war. You can also visit the lighthouse keeper’s residence.

5. IDA'S COTTAGE At Ida Jansson’s little red cottage in Saltvik, time has stood still with flowered curtains, woven rag rugs and coffee cups on the shelf. The cottage also provides information about Borgboda, one of Åland’s most interesting ancient heritage areas, and where a nature trail now winds through the landscape.

10. ÅLAND SCHOOL MUSEUM In Vårdö, time stands still in the old school building from 1888. Here, you can get a sense of how teaching was conducted in the past, with wooden benches, slate boards, and inkwells.

THE MUSEUM VISIT becomes even more enjoyable when the whole family is having a good time. At both the Maritime Museum and Pommern, children get to be at the helm and steer the ship. Here, children and adults can discover and learn together, and even try things out in practice. For example, can you distribute the cargo on a cargo ship without it capsizing?

Treasure hunting with the museum’s mascot, the ship’s rat, Ruby, and the imaginative playroom “Ruby and the Sea” are among the highlights. The pirate flag is a unique treasure that

THE CULTURE AND CONGRESS CENTRE in the middle of Mariehamn is a natural meeting place for conferences and various events. Alandica has hosted everything from international science fiction conventions to small family christenings. It works just as well for two people at a wedding as it does for hundreds of people at a lecture.

FROM THE OUTSIDE, Alandica looks like it is made up of three

islands in different colours. The multifunctional building is designed by Kjaer & Richter and consists of clean lines and materials. Indoors, the islands merge into a stylish whole that is suitable for dinners and corporate events as well as weddings, galas, and graduation ceremonies.

The building includes seven conference rooms, music and theatre halls, an auditorium for 200 people, and a large hall for 600 people that still feels small and intimate, working equally well for lectures and large shows.

TASTE THE ICE CREAM!

Discover Åland by going from ice cream stand to ice cream stand. You can find delicious ice creams and nice excursion destinations throughout Åland, including in the Maritime Quarter in Mariehamn and at Lemström Canal in Lemland.

By the canal, built in 1882, you can sit down and watch the boats go by or let the kids run around in the grassy areas. Or, combine the ice cream with a walk through the leafy meadows of Ramsholmen in Jomala. The lush nature trail is just the right length at 1.5 kilometres.

A round of adventure golf offers a fun mix between golf and mini golf. At Eckerö Camping you can play a 12-hole course with different themes for the holes, then continue the tournament on Ångbåtbryggan’s adventure golf course in Mariehamn. If you like mini golf, you can find courses at various places in Åland, including Gröna Udden Camping in Mariehamn and Soltuna Restaurant and Café in Geta.

FOR A SAFE AND PLEASANT BIKE RIDE, consider the following! A bicycle is a vehicle, meaning the same rules apply to cyclists as to car drivers. For cyclists, this means righthand traffic on both roads and bike paths. Always look in both directions at intersections and never drive straight into the intersection.

As always in traffic, be careful, consider the circumstances, and be attentive in all situations. Interaction with other road users is important; remember to signal well in advance! Also, check that you can turn without risk, remember to look behind you before turning.

It’s safest to ride single file. Bicycles with more than two wheels may not travel side by side.

DON’T FORGET A BIKE HELMET and preferably use a re-

flective vest. A safe bicycle should also be equipped with a bell, functional brakes, a white reflector in front, a red reflector in the back, two orange spoke reflectors, preferably a chain guard, and front and rear lights.

Summer, sun, and swimming in the sea Really, all it takes is a few relaxing days at the beach to make the whole family happy. Luckily, there are many beautiful beaches to choose from in Åland.

DEGERSAND. The long stretch of beach at Degersand, with its un-

broken horizon towards the sea in the west, is a site loved by all.

Both young and old like to throw themselves into the waves and swim around in the sea. Plus, there is a beach bar and a popular restaurant for when you get hungry or thirsty.

BAMBÖLE. Small children like a sandy beach, and older children

enjoy jumping from a diving platform. Bambölevik in Finström has both. Here, you’ll also find expanses of smooth bedrock, grassy areas, and picnic tables with a fire pit. The swimming area is located in a sheltered bay where the water is often a little warmer than in other places.

LILLA HOLMEN. A stone’s throw from the square in Mariehamn is

Lilla Holmen, a sweet little island with a long shallow sandy beach, a longer pier, a floating dock for swimmers, and a fun ship-themed play structure in the playground. On the island are also rabbits, peacocks, swings, and fun obstacle courses. The beach is accessible, with a ramp and changing rooms. In addition, a swimming wheelchair is available to borrow. You can reserve it via the city of Mariehamn.

VÄSTERVIK AND NOTPLAN. At Västerviken in Haraldsby in Saltvik, there is a sandy beach, diving platform, and volleyball net.

However, the beach is not shallow. For families with smaller children, Notplan in Kroklund is more suitable. Here, you’ll also find a diving platform, a sandy beach and a beach volleyball court.

SINTING. Sinting, a swimming beach in the village of Degerby on

Föglö, is a true pearl of the archipelago. There’s a sandy beach that is appreciated by the youngest in the family and a diving platform for those who like to jump into the sea from higher heights. There is also smooth bedrock perfect for sunbathing, as well as a pier for those who come with their own boat.

After 37 years in the United States, designer Lotta Jansdotter has moved back to Åland. Here, she finds the peace and nature that are her greatest sources of inspiration.

– Moving home again was one of the best things we’ve ever done!

EVERY SUMMER, Lotta also teaches a popular workshop on

the island of Silverskär, where participants from all over the world gather to create patterns inspired by the Åland nature.

– I’ve also started collaborating with other artists and artisans on Åland. There is so much talent, creativity, and culture to explore here.”

This sum is then divided between selected projects that support the Baltic Sea’s ecosystem. This is a simple yet effective way to participate in environmental work for a healthier sea.

that Ålanders have the sea in their blood. That is why it is natural for Ålandsbanken, which has had its headquarters on Åland since the bank was founded in 1919, to care about the Baltic Sea.
