Explore Åland by bus and archipelago ferry

Åland consists of the main island and thousands of other islands of all sizes around it. Many of the bigger islands are inhabited and you can reach them by the local inter-island ferries.

It is easy to explore the Åland Islands. On the main island there are four main roads with public bus connections to the ferry harbours. Apart from the main roads there are hundreds of kilometres of scenic village roads offering a lot to see and experience. In Mariehamn you can take the city bus.

THE ARCHIPELAGO

When the locals talk about the archipelago, they talk about the islands located east of the main island. These islands can be reached by Ålandstrafiken’s inter-island ferries. You can make day trips to the islands or stay overnight.

Here are some basic facts good to know when you are planning a visit to the archipelago.

Main road 2 leads to Vårdö. There is a short cable ferry crossing operated 24/7 and you don’t need to book the ferry in advance.

From Hummelvik ferry harbour on Vårdö you can take a ferry to Kumlinge and Brändö on the Northern archipelago ferry route.

You can catch a Southern route ferry to Sottunga and Kökar from Långnäs harbour at the end of the main road 3 to Lumparland. There is also a ferry connection on the intermediate ferry route between Föglö and Kumlinge.

To Föglö take a ferry från Svinö ferry harbour, follow the main road 3. The Föglö ferry has many daily departures, and no booking is required. For all other ferries, please remember to make a ferry booking for your vehicle in advance!

Åland from the water is always an experience

Rent a kayak, book a boat tour or visit the island realm with your own boat. We are confident in saying that you will have wonderful memories that last a lifetime.

Exploring Åland and its surrounding islands, sea, sky and horizon will give you an unparalleled feeling of freedom.

Located southwest of Föglö island, Björkör has an archipelago homestead from the 1700s. The island is a nature reserve and memorial, which provides a unique insight to life in the archipelago long ago. Sältingskär, with its well-preserved fishing huts lies nearby.

Källskär in the Kökar archipelago beckons the visitor with its interesting Ice Age formations and unexpected environments created by Swedish baron Göran Åkerhielm in the 1960s. Guided boat trips to Källskär start from Brudhäll Marina in Karlby.

UNFORGETTABLE ISLANDS

Islands worth visiting in the northern and eastern archipelagos include Boxö in Saltvik with the largest cave in Åland, the rocks on Saggö island and the Länsmansgrund nature reserve. The northernmost islands are Rannörarna, which is Åland’s last outpost in the Bothnian Bay.

Located on the approach channel to Mariehamn, Kobba Klintar is easy to reach with or without your own boat. When the flag is hoisted, the café is open. The beacon serves as a venue for exhibitions, and humorous art pieces signed by Juha Pykäläinen pop up here and there, including seagulls wearing swim goggles and seals in the harbour basin.

In general, the climate here is mild and the summers are usually sunny. Åland has the most hours of sunshine in the Nordic countries from May to August. And, even if it tends to be a bit windy – often from the southwest – the winds are warm.

Island hopping in the Åland archipelago

Åland has so many islands that not even Ålanders have visited them all. To be precise, there are 6,700 islands in total. How many will you be able to reach in a single visit?

You can either drive around and explore the island realm on your own or follow a ready-made route. The Åland Archipelago Trail is a popular alternative, which makes exploring Åland all year round a snap, whether you’re travelling by car or bike. If you start in Mariehamn, the Archipelago Trail crosses the main island and heads east into the Åland archipelago. You can choose whether to start on the islands in the northern or southern archipelago. The Åland Archipelago Trail can also be combined with the Archipelago Trail in Finland, which continues in the Turku archipelago via Osnäs or Galtby. This is also the starting point if you are coming to Åland from the east.

TAKE THE ARCHIPELAGO FERRY

To get from island to island, you’ll be taking the inter-island ferries of Ålandstrafiken, which seamlessly transport cars, bikes and passengers. And, to sweeten the deal, you’ll be able to enjoy the sea and so many beautiful views – a ferry passage is an experience all on its own. Ferries run from the main island to inhabited islands several times a day. Just remember to book a place for your vehicle in good time! Each archipelago municipality has its own unique charm. From Brändö in the north, with its bridges and causeways, to the austere island of Kökar, lying at the southernmost point of the Åland archipelago. Stay a day or two before moving on and by all means make the odd detour. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy some extra time by dining out, seeing sights and savouring island life.

FOOD IN THE TOWN CENTRE RESTAURANTS

NOT TO BE MISSED

ENJOY SEAFOOD

BY THE PIER

Brasserie Ångbåtsbryggan has a great location in Mariehamn. Just a stone’s throw from the town square, yet at the pier with a nice sea view over the bay and marina in the Eastern Harbour. The restaurant offers a special atmosphere because the walls and the ceiling are made of glass, which gives an illusion of being outdoors when indoors. In late summer and autumn evenings there is extra magic in the air when the natural daylight is shifting into a starry sky. The open kitchen is the heart of the restaurant. You can see the chefs working next to a big stone oven made of local recycled red bricks. Östra Hamnen • brasseriet.ax

Mariehamn attracts visitors with good food and entertainment. Take a food walk and discover four restaurants with atmosphere, style and variety – everything from great lunches, seafood and à la carte dishes to stone oven baked pizzas. In between you can play adventure golf.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

Sittkoffska Gården is a popular meeting point in the middle of Mariehamn. Cosiness, vintage, local raw produce and sustainability are the key words for the restaurant. Take an extra look at the imaginary décor, such as the recycled windows, old pieces of furniture, lush green plants and the gigantic felted elk head. Here you can enjoy genuine homely meals of local raw produce and high quality. Visit also the Farm Store, filled with Åland artisan food products that you can buy home.

PARADISE FOR BIRDWATCHERS

Åland is a natural gathering place for many migratory bird species and popular among ornithologists. Bring your binoculars to the birdwatching tower at Torpfjärden in Jomala or to the Herröskatan nature reserve in Lemland. The lighthouse on the island of Lågskär is one of Finland’s foremost ornithology stations. Or, visit Kökar and its six platforms for birdwatchers, with information on the most common birds in the archipelago.

Enjoy the natural relaxation

Experiences in nature are often all you need. A place where you can breathe deep, unwind, and enjoy the changing of the seasons

You’ll find it all in Åland among the islands and islets, in the silent forests and flowery meadows, at the foot of the mighty sea and on the rocky red granite shores. An experience that costs nothing, requires no reservations and is just as fulfilling no matter what time of year it might be.

UNWIND

The forest and nature are inherently calming. You can simply sit down on any tree trunk or cliff and just enjoy the show. Or try forest bathing! The nature experience becomes a bit more active when you follow a nature trail or a longer hiking trail. Forest yoga helps your body and soul with recovery. Forest yoga is a combination of Japanese forest bathing (shirin yoko)

and soft yoga on the body’s terms. In the summer you can also take a boat excursion and try yoga on a barren rocky islet and enjoy a picnic meal.

PEACEFUL FISHING

Åland is a fishing paradise all year round, with excellent catches to be had and beautiful archipelago nature.

The most popular form of fishing is angling for pike with a spinning rod, which is easy to understand. Powerful pike over a metre in length are not uncommon.

In the summer, fishing with spinners and jigs to catch the lively perch, which is ever ready to bite, is a truly enjoyable pastime that suits most people, especially families. Remember to buy a fishing license! The best fishing experiences are always guaranteed by local fishing guides.

NATURE HIKES

Åland’s nature reserves offer tranquil experiences and floral beauty. Close to Mariehamn, there is Ramsholmen, famous for blooming meadows of ramson and wood anemones in spring, while Nåtö entices with hikes through the cultural landscape of wooded meadows. Here you’ll also find picnic tables and BBQ spots. The Godby Arboretum was established in the 1930s, and along its 1.7 km long trail, you can study several foreign tree species. If you want to see the Snakes-head Fritillary in bloom, then visit Höckböleholmen in Geta in early summer.

Active holiday in the woods and wilderness

The nature is filled with activities. What will you choose today?

Åland is now a paradise for disc golfers with its 18 courses. All but one are free to play and you have time to visit several courses in one day. Family-friendly Lions DGP in Mariehamn is one option, as is Soltuna DGP, which offers a view of the ordinary. For experienced players, there is the Vesterkalmare DGP pay-to-play course near Mariehamn.

At the Flowpark high-rope adventure course in Vårdö, you can try challenges high among the treetops. The height itself, about 15 metres above the ground, is often the most pulse-raising. Luckily there are courses at a lower height as well, altogether at four different levels.

Everything you can do on the water you can do in Åland. Water sports, such as surfing, kite surfing, paddling and jetskiing

are popular. Equipment can be rented on site, for example SUP boards that suit most people.

OUT INTO THE TERRAIN

The Activity Forest in Käringsund offers trails and tracks for DiscGolf, hiking, TrailRun, orienteering, and SwimRun. Many also choose cycling in the forest on MTB or fat bike tracks.

The Eckerö MTB loop, for example, is a 3-kilometre long trail for beginners and offers nice views and fun jumps. Here you can also try to beat the trail record on the training app Strava.

Or try Skogsråddet orienteering with 50 control points near Mariehamn. The map costs 15 euros and is available at Åland Tourist Information, City Cykel and Team Sportia.

Cycling in Åland

Åland is a popular cycling destination with beautiful nature and many sights of interest. For a safe and pleasant bike ride, please consider the following

Use a bike helmet to protect your head! Don’t

• A bicycle is a vehicle, meaning the same rules apply to cyclists as to car drivers.

• As always in traffic, be careful, consider the circumstances, and be attentive in all situations.

• Interaction with other road users is important.

• Always look in both directions at intersections and never drive straight into the intersection.

• Familiarise yourself with all road signs.

• It’s safest to ride single file.

• A safe bicycle should also be equipped with a bell, functional brakes, a white reflector in front, a red reflector in the back, two orange spoke reflectors, and front and rear lights.

Enjoy your cycling trip
forget a bike helmet and preferably use a reflective vest. Heja Åland - we make Åland healthier #hejaåland

Great cycling routes in all directions

Follow the signposted cycling routes, sometimes along cycling paths by the main roads, other times along winding village roads with little traffic. Where the road ends, you can continue your journey on a bicycle ferry or archipelago ferry.

Here are tips for two shorter cycling tours starting from Mariehamn. The first one goes southwards over bridges and causeways towards the nature trails of Nåtö and Järsö, and Stickstugan crafts café. The other one takes you along the main road no. 3 towards Lemland and to Lemböte Chapel dating back to the 1200s, and once located along an important medieval fairway.

For an overnight roundtrip you can bike from Mariehamn to Snäckö in Geta and take the bicycle ferry to Skarpnåtö in Hammarland the following day, and then cycle back to Mariehamn. The bicycle ferry runs daily from June 24th to August 25th with departures at 12.30 from Snäckö and 13.00 from Skarpnåtö. In July and August, additional

departures at 16.00 from Snäckö and 17.00 from Skarpnåtö are available upon prior booking. If you prefer not to stay overnight, you can bike in the opposite direction, starting towards Hammarland.

MANY STOPS ALONG THE WAY

Along the cycling route, you can stop at various places of interest, including Skarpnåtö Homestead Museum and Sålis Battery Hill in Hammarland, as well as St. Olav’s Church in Jomala, one of the oldest medieval stone churches in Finland. You’ll also pass several fine restaurants and cafes, such as Johannas Hembakta and Pub Stallhagen in Grelsby, Grannas Bistro next to the apple orchards in Tjudö, and Soltuna Restaurant & Café on Getabergen hill. While waiting for the bicycle ferry, enjoy a snack or a meal at Lolo’s Seaside Café & Restaurant in Snäckö with outdoor seating on the seaside jetty. The nicest way to travel

If you were to book now, when would you be on board?

tallinksilja.com

It’s nice to be home, but nothing beats travelling. Out at sea or beyond, the very essence of travel unfolds during the journey. There is no shortage of beauty to admire while cruising to Åland through Finland’s glorious archipelago. Regardless of your port of departure – Helsinki, Tallinn, Turku or Stockholm. Soothing for the eyes, but also for the soul.

High-class golf at Finland’s best course

This year, Slottbanan at Åland Golf Club in Kastelholm was ranked the best golf course in Finland with all-time high results in all categories, including the most beautiful course, the best design and top condition.

The golf course ranking in Finland is made every two years among approximately 150 golf courses throughout the country. In this year’s ranking Slottsbanan advanced from its previous third position to the first. Additionally, the course has made it onto the list of Europe’s Top100 courses, with its 10th hole being arguably one of the best in Europe.

In the summer of 2020, Slottsbanan reopened after a comprehensive renovation, resulting in a very popular course that follows the seashore even more closely. Golfers praise the new course for its absolutely lovely stretch along Slottsundet Bay, where you have a view of the sea from all 18 holes. After four played seasons, thousands of rounds and a European tour,

it is also clear that Slottsbanan is maintaining its high standards, especially on the greens. In addition to Slottsbanan, Åland also has Kungsbanan, a beautiful 18-hole course with forested grounds. The Prinsessan short hole course, with its six par 3 holes, is perfect for anyone wanting to give golf a try or work on their technique.

Changing rooms with a sauna, driving range, shop and restaurant are also available as well as the opportunity of taking golf lessons.

GOLF IN ECKERÖ

You can find even more beautiful greens and fairways at Eckerö Golf. Golfers of every skill level enjoy it here thanks to the four tees on the club’s 18-hole course. The first nine holes of the course are a bit easier, while the last nine are more challenging. There is a driving range and a service building with showers and accommodation in holiday cottages next to the course.

Archipelago nature with great variation

Visit the archipelago municipality of Föglö for hiking trails with magnificent archipelago views. Here you can hike on Jyddö and Hastersboda, two trails with different characters and flora, but within a short distance from each other.

The Jyddö trail offers varied terrain and mostly passes through deciduous forest. Along the moderately difficult 5km trail, there are birdwatching towers and several picnic tables. If you want to avoid slopes and challenging heights, you can hike only half of the trail. At the last picnic spot, there is a shelter with a BBQ grill.

Compared to Jyddö, Hastersboda has a completely different flora. The trail mostly leads through old coniferous forest, and it feels as if you were walking in a virgin forest. Here too, there are several picnic spots, and a lookout tower with a splendid view over the sea bay.

At first, the moderately difficult 4km trail runs parallel to the Hastersboda DiscGolfPark, then continues undisturbed.

Make a day trip to Föglö or stay overnight. The Föglö ferry departs from Svinö, about 30km east of Mariehamn. The one-way ferry trip to Degerby takes 30 minutes, fees for cars and bicycles. From Degerby, it’s about 14km to Jyddö and about 15km to Hastersboda.

If you want to learn more about Föglö’s history, be sure to visit the Nedergårds farm museum and Galleria ”Nordlunds” in Brändö-by, just off the road to Hastersboda, or Föglö Museum and Pilot Museum in Degerby. In the village you can enjoy a delicious lunch at Carlsro Badhotell and dine by the waterfront at Restaurant Seagram.

Lighthouses and exciting wreck diving

On calm days, an excursion out to one of Åland’s lighthouses is idyllic, almost magical. However, it’s a different story during storms and rough weather; then it’s easy to understand why there are so many wrecks in the sea around Åland.

Try to imagine how the lighthouse keepers lived out here on these islands, especially during the winter. At Lågskär lighthouse, they lived together with their families. At most, some 30 people lived on the island.

Guided boat tours to the white and slender lighthouse of Sälskär island in the northern archipelago start from Skarpnåtö in Hammarland and Snäckö in Geta. The lighthouse was manned from 1868 to 1949, when it was made the first automated lighthouse in Finland.

The Märket lighthouse is neither tall nor stately, but it is captivating how it clings to its remote, rocky island. When the winds pick up, waves crash over the entire island. The lighthouse was inaugurated in 1885 and automated in 1976.

WRECK DIVING

The sea around Åland is a treasure trove for wreck divers. The number of well-preserved and intact wrecks is high, thanks to unique diving legislation of Åland. Down among the wrecks, it feels as if time has stood still, with all the details and items in place as they were on the day the ship sank to the bottom of the sea.

The schooner Balder, the steamship Belliver and the iron barque Plus are just a few examples. Since The Plus resembles the sailing ship Pommern, you can add an extra dimension to your diving experience by starting with a tour on the Pommern’s deck before diving to the Plus for similar views beneath the surface.

Always book your diving excursion through one of the diving guides in Åland. They have extensive knowledge of dive sites and the history of the wrecks, as well as of the permits required for diving. In the footsteps of Maja of Stormskerry

Anni Blomqvist’s novels about Maja on Stormskär Island in Åland have once again been brought to life. This time as a celebrated feature film directed by Tiina Lymi.

In early 2024, the film ”Stormskerry Maja” premiered with Amanda Jansson and Linus Troedsson in the leading roles as Maja and her husband Janne. It’s a strong story about life and death, love and sorrow, and continues to captivate its audience.

Anni Blomqvist (1909-1990) gained fame with the novel series about Maja and the hardworking life on the remote island of Stormskär, set in the mid-19th century. The books were first adapted into film in 1975 and have also been staged for the theatre.

The new Stormskerry Maja film was mainly shot in Åland and offers many beautiful settings to discover on your own too.

BEHIND THE SCENES

The experience is best enjoyed if you first read the novels or watch the new film. Otherwise, a visit to the Åland Museum of Cultural History is recommended. This summer, the museum presents an exhibition on the film production ”In Stormskerry Maja’s Footsteps” with behind-the-scenes footage, photographs, costumes and props.

Then, take a Stormskerry Maja tour in Åland. On the list of filming locations, you’ll find beautiful settings at the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum, Skarpnåtö homestead and Eckerö church. Also, visit the Maritime Quarter with the seafarers’ chapel and the construction of the schooner Emelia, as well as the nature trail of Nåtö’s wooded meadow with a 19th-century cultural landscape.

Finish off with a visit to author Anni Blomqvist’s home “Strömmen”, today a museum.

Excellent conditions for kayaking

Exploring Åland and its surrounding islands, sea, sky and horizon will give you an unparalleled feeling of freedom.

Seeing Åland from the water is always an experience, from spring to autumn. Rent a kayak and discover one of the world’s most beautiful archipelagos. When going by kayak, the water will show you the way, with endless possibilities to be found among the thousands of islands and skerries. You’ll find everything from calm bays for beginners to more challenging paddling water in the outer archipelago, where you can land just about anywhere for a refreshing dip in the sea.

Paddelboden paddle shack offers relaxing 2-hour evening kayakings amidst the islands south of Mariehamn on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 25 June & 29 August. You can also book a day excursion with lunch to the pilot station of Kobba Klintar.

The archipelago dotted with many small islands, suitable for beginners, can also be

found in Föglö. Otherwise, a shorter trip around Mellanön in Eckerö is recommended.

CHALLENGING WATERS

The Norrhavsrutten kayaking route is a tip for those who look for challenges. The entire route extends from Käringsund in the west to Jurmo in the east. Norrhavsrutten is nothing for beginners, but you can easily choose to paddle only parts of it. Or, go kayaking with a guide.

Islands worth visiting in the northern and eastern archipelagos include the Boxö island with Åland’s largest cave, the rocks of Saggö and the Länsmansgrund nature reserve. Marina Hamnsundet in Saltvik rents out kayaks. You can also book self-guided kayak experiences with pre-planned routes, meals, and accommodation.

You can hire canoes/kayaks in Åland. Canoes/kayaks can be driven to a desired put-in and picked up when you are done, provided that the location can be reached by car. Paradise for long-distance ice skaters

In winter, you can lace up your long-distance skates and go gliding across the icy expanses. The myriad of islands and skerries offers a vast array of choices. The diversity in nature and spectacular views add to the charm, along with the chance to easily move between tranquil bays and the edge of the open sea.

The season for long-distance ice skating is often long in Åland, stretching from late November well into March and April. Lakes freeze first, followed by the sea inlets, and finally ending with magical frozen expanses by the open sea.

During the early season, Markusbölefjärden in Finström and Kyrksundet in Sund are usually good options. Later on, Bambölevik, Ivarsfjärden, Slottsundet, the inner archipelago, and sometimes even the outer archipelago become accessible. Of

course, it all depends on the temperature, the amount of snowfall, and the winds. It’s important to always be careful when on ice! A tip is to join a group or book a guide, especially if you’re a beginner.

Ålands Skrinnare is a group of enthusiastic ice skaters. To participate in their tours, you need to be a member and complete their beginner’s welcome programme.

Ålands Skrinnare is a member of the long-distance ice skating network in Sweden and Finland.

Downhill and cross-country skiing

When nature beds down for her long winter’s sleep, ski tracks and ski hills fill up with avid winter sports enthusiasts.

With the help of snow cannons, the ski and biathlon centre of Åland creates tracks for cross-country skiing behind Vikingahallen in Jomala. Whatever the weather, the centre aims to maintain at least a 350-metre-long loop for all enthusiastic cross-country skiers. The colder the winter, the more artificial snow and the longer the loop. Winters with a lot of natural snow increase the length to an 8.5-kilometre long track. The facility also offers biathlon with 20 targets.

When the temperatures are low and there is plenty of natural snow, ski tracks are laid out at many recreational areas around Åland. For example, at the Wiklöf Holding Arena, Ytternäs sports field, and

Backebergs sports field in Mariehamn, at Hammarvallen in Hammarland, at Breidablick and Godby sports centre in Finström, and at Söderby in Lemland. Contact the municipalities for current information!

Skiing on the golf course in Kastelholm is a tip for those seeking beautiful views and well-groomed ski tracks with moderate slopes. Above the clubhouse, there’s also a sledding hill.

DOWNHILL SKIING

For those who prefer downhill skiing there is Germundö Alpin attracting both slalom skiers and snowboarders to the snowy slopes in Saltvik. For fast runs, choose Valter’s steep slope, while Ekoslingan is slightly calmer. Tövelbranten’s Snowpark challenges with rails and boxes.

She created the clothing brand she herself missed

Marie Backman-Thors loves color, patterns, and clothes so much that she has even created her own clothing brand.

Today, Marie runs the store and an online shop with her daughters Lisa and Emelie. Their mission is to inspire women to express themselves through what they wear. Marie strongly believes that you should wear the clothes that make you happy, because they will give you a confidence-boost and also ultimately bring out your personality.

- That’s why you’ll find lots of ‘happy clothes’ in our store, garments with of color and patterns that are flattering and comfortable, says Marie.

In the store, you’ll get help to bring out what’s unique about you and find the styles that suit your body shape.

- Sometimes it’s just about being challenged and daring to try new things, says Marie, who has always loved bold clothes and styling.

FIND YOUR BODYSHAPE

Apple shaped

Are you wonderfully curvy without a defined waist and with slender legs? Are your midsection the widest part of your body? Perfect! You have an apple-shaped body type.

Straight

Pear shaped

Do you have a vague waist and about the same measurements around hips, waist, and bust? Excellent! Your body shape is straight. The buttocks can be full or of a slightly smaller size, the shapes either soft or angular.

Do you have narrow shoulders and a fuller buttocks and thighs? These are all characteristic of a wonderfully pearshaped body type, which is a classic feminine figure.

• Visit Marie at her store in the heart of Mariehamn at Torggatan 12, or visit their online store www.dresslikemarie.com STYLING HELP!

Hourglass shaped

Strawberry shaped

Do you have either a small or large bust, wonderfully defined shoulders, and slim, fine hips and legs? Is your hip and buttock narrower than your upper body? Perfect! Then you have the body shape that we call strawberry.

Do you have lovely feminine shapes with a well-marked waist? As hourglass shaped, you have shoulders as wide as your hips and a clearly marked waist. The bust can be either large or small.

We offer personal styling service at Torggatan 12, in the centre of Mariehamn.

Test your limits in nature

Choose Åland for training or competing! During the year, several fun runs are held, with classes ranging from elite to enthusiasts just having a go.

Many people love being able to combine training and competing with family holidays. In many cases, competition days are real family gatherings, where even members of the family not competing can find plenty to do. For example, Semesterloppet is a sports event for the whole family with distances for all ages. At the same time, the Kids’ Weekend in Käringsund focuses on entertainment and activities for children.

Road cyclists say that Åland is the Mallorca of the North. This is due to lighter traffic combined with ideal roads and beautiful natural surroundings. A total of 1,100 kilometres of public roads and 150 kilometres of bike trails are perfect for any-

one who wants to get in a cycling workout on their holiday. Or compete in a bike race. If your thing is crawling and running, you should absolutely take part in the Åland Swimrun, this year without timing. Choose between several routes and enjoy the experience in a group. Also Käringsund Triathlon is back this year with a wide selection of starts. There’s something for everyone!

FINISHING OFF THE SEASON

Close out the competition season with a run in October, when the air is clear and loaded with oxygen. The 22 kilometre-long Kanonloppet (Cannon Run) crosses varied terrain. Or, to extend your season you can opt for the traditional New Year’s Run in Mariehamn.

The freedom and flexibility of camping

Do you enjoy camping, or would you prefer glamping? Regardless, you’ll experience convenient and nature-friendly accommodation, with the sea as your closest neighbour.

In Åland, there are around 20 campsites, all located in picturesque settings by the sea, and with bathing beaches, saunas, and access to services. You’ll stay close to nature and wake up to birdsong, fresh air, and a morning dip! Camping is also the perfect accommodation option for visitors with caravans and motorhomes, as well as for cyclists who can bring their tents or book overnight cabins.

Many visitors choose glamping, a slightly more luxurious alternative. Glamping is to sleep in a tent amidst nature, but on a mattress in a real bed in a spacious tent with high ceiling and comfortable furnishing. Glamping provides the perfect experience to enjoy luxury and glamour in nature, for example at Snäckö Canvas Hotel. Mickels

Gård’s offers glamping on a farm. Enjoy comfortable accommodation and birdsong and make friends with the farm’s animals. Feed the chickens, pick your own breakfast eggs, or book a sauna with a view of grazing cows.

Beaches and campsites are popular sites for glamping, but Rundhusbyn also offers customised all-in-one packages with a tent on a private location on an isthmus in northern Saltvik.

EVERYMAN’S RIGHTS

In Åland the right of common access, Everyman’s rights, is more limited than in Sweden and on the mainland of Finland. Campsites are recommended for an overnight stay, unless you have the landowner’s permission for wild camping. All campsites are located on scenic places by the sea, and they offer bathing beaches, saunas and other services. Read more about the right of common access at Visitaland.com

Bring your workout to Åland

Åland offers plenty of options for those who want to stay active when on vacation. Many gyms and sports facilities welcome holiday-makers with open arms.

While some prefer weightlifting, others opt for group exercise classes. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to choose both.

In Åland, traditional gyms offer both group workouts and gym facilities. These include Avancia and Träningsverket in and near Mariehamn, as well as Vibe in Godby. At Avancia and Träningsverket, you can also enjoy sauna after your workout.

Sauna bathing with a touch of luxury

Sauna bathing comes with numerous health benefits; it’s relaxing and improves blood circulation. Additionally, it’s a pleasant way to socialize.

Rent a sauna raft and treat yourself to an extraordinary sauna experience. Luxurious, relaxing and close to nature! Sauna raft M/S Sauna Marin from Saunax has its home port in Mariehamn’s eastern harbour. Take a trip with or without a captain in the Slemmern bay and enjoy a sauna, a dip in the sea and pleasant socialising in the lounge or on the roof terrace.

Or, you can rent a floating sauna at Sandösund Resort in Vårdö. For a view beyond the ordinary, visit the wood-fired beach sauna at Degersand beach. Here you can enjoy the hot sauna, take refreshing dips in the sea and relax on the spacious seaside patio.

Hotel Brudhäll, right next to the jetty of Karlby Marina in Kökar, offers an archi-

tect-designed two-storey sauna with an accompanying jacuzzi.

Saunas and indoor pools are also available at HavsVidden Resort and at most of the hotels in Mariehamn.

If you long for a wood heated hot tub or sauna for your accommodation, you can rent one from AX Rent. They offer mobile saunas and hot tubs that are easy to transport on a trailer.

WINTER SWIMMING

Winter swimming is another invigorating trend. Nowadays, almost everyone goes winter swimming - or dreams about it. Åland has the perfect conditions for swimming in the cold - here, it’s usually quite close to the closest pier.

For example, at the Mariebad swimming centre and Lilla Holmen beach in Mariehamn.

Holiday gems for the whole family

Create holiday memories for the whole family with outings, events and fun activities.

Activities at Smart Park family park are popular among younger children. Pet animals, ride pedal go-karts, and don’t forget to bring swimsuits for water games. While the youngest kids enjoy outdoor activities, the older ones can play Laser Tag indoors. Kids with loads of energy to spare also love all the inflatable attractions and bouncy castles in the indoor halls of Leklandet in Eckeröhallen and Palleralla in Jomala.

A visit to a farm is guaranteed fun for everyone. At Sommarögård on Föglö, you can book Cow Coffee or Sheep Snack among the grazing animals in the pasture. Or join a pig safari at Nygårds Forest Pig Farm in Sund and make friends with the farm’s happy pigs on Wednesdays in July.

For a bit of a wilder experience, join a guided wildlife safari tour in Käringsund’s wildlife enclosure and meet fallow deer, wild boar, ostriches, and llamas up close.

ADVENTURE GOLF

Adventure golf is a fun mix of golf and minigolf. Take a round of adventure golf on Eckerö Camping’s course with 12 themed holes. On the campsite, there are also other activities, such as disc golf, pedal boats, and trampolines. Continue the tournament at Ångbåtsbryggans adventure golf course in Mariehamn. If you prefer mini-golf, try the courses at Gröna Udden in Mariehamn and Soltuna in Geta, where you can also play disc golf, go hiking to Geta caves, or try the family-friendly Trollstigen trail. Many museums also offer activities tailored for children.

ACTIVITIES

Sunny summer days on the beach

All it takes to make the whole family happy is sun and a place to swim. Luckily you can find lots of both all over Åland!

Åland boasts public beaches in all directions, ensuring you’ll always find one sheltered from the wind. Young children enjoy sandy beaches, while older kids prefer ones with diving platforms. Bambölevik in Finström offers both, along with cliffs, lawns, and picnic tables with BBQ pits. The beach is nestled in a sheltered bay where the water is often a bit warmer than in other places.

Sinting beach in Degerby is a similar gem. Here, there’s a popular sandy beach for the youngest family members and a diving platform for those who like to jump into the sea from higher heights.

At Västerviken in Haraldsby, you’ll find a sandy beach, diving platform, and volleyball net. For families with younger children,

the shallow sandy beach of Notplan in Kroklund is a bit better than Västerviken. Here, you’ll also find a diving platform and beach volleyball court. Other child-friendly beaches can be found at Bomarsund in Sund, Knutnäs in Geta and Klockarholmen in Lemland.

Käringsund Resort in Eckerö is a tip for those who want to experience everything with a day ticket, including a dip in the sea, pool hangout, minigolf, pedal boats and much more.

POPULAR SEASIDE

Degersand with its waves and open horizon facing the sea in western Åland is a popular beach among Ålanders. What’s more, there’s a beach bar and a restaurant for the hungry and thirsty sunbathers.

There are three child-friendly beaches in Mariehamn. Read more about them on page 116.

PORTAL TO THE BOMARSUND ERA

After belonging to Sweden, Åland and Finland became part of the Russian Empire after the Finnish War of 1808-1809. At the same time, Åland was made the farthest western outpost of the Russian Empire, and construction of the massive fortifications at Bomarsund began in 1830. The fortress was later destroyed by French and English forces during the Crimean War in 1854, but the ruins remain to this day. At the new Visitor Centre, you can experience the rise and fall of Bomarsund with sound and images before heading out to the fortress site itself.

CULTURAL MELTING POINT

This year marks 170 years since the fortress in Bomarsund fell during the Crimean War.This is highlighted at Bomarsund Visitors’ Centre with focus on the significance of cultural interactions during the Bomarsund era. On nearby Prästö, there are burial grounds from several denominations that bear witness to many cultural encounters. There will also be a focus on food and drink from a multicultural perspective. The visitors’ centre is open from May to September, and the ruins can be visited all year round. There are two hiking trails here, one in Bomarsund and one on Prästö, as well as nice views from the Djävulsberget hill and the Notvikstornet tower ruins.

ÅLAND CAMERA MUSEUM

The museum in Pålsböle displays one of the world’s largest collections of photographic technology. With over 16,000 items, it covers everything from spy cameras and film projectors to a complete photo shop and newspaper Dagens Nyheter’s old camera collection. This year the kids can try their hand at colouring black-and-white photos the old-fashioned way. The museum also has a selection of older cameras for visitors to touch and try out.

The fascinating history of Kastelholm

Discover the well-preserved ruins of a medieval castle, a prison museum with chilling stories, and how a farm in Åland looked in the past.

Kastelholm Castle had its heyday during the Vasa era in the 16th century when Åland was a castle province of Sweden, and Gustav Vasa and his sons ruled. A visit to the castle ruins today offers a wide selection of Åland’s history with many contrasts. For several hundred years, the castle was Åland’s administrative centre, and both royalty and other fine folk passed through. Celebrations included fantastic feasts, where fine game meat and hundreds of litres of beer were enjoyed. On the other hand, the women accused of witchcraft in Finland’s largest witch trial were imprisoned in the castle. The stories come to life through the castle’s museum hosts and guides, who bring memories to life in the historical surroundings.

Behind the castle is the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum, Ålands Skansen, with older buildings from the 1800s and even more stories about olden times. For example a cow shed, oxen stable, smithy, smoke sauna and the main house. All buildings are open for visitors. Events are arranged during the summer, including Midsummer Eve’s celebrations, and a traditional Christmas market. In July there are child-friendly activities.

EXCITING PRISON MUSEUM

The prison museum of Vita Björn is located opposite Jan Karlsgården. The prison was built in 1784 and it is the oldest preserved prison building in Finland. Next to the museum area there is a popular discgolf course.

Traditions of Åland archipelago life

Åland’s Hunting and Fishing Museum in the charming fishing village of Käringsund looks like a collection of boathouses. Inside, you’ll learn about animals, nature and Åland’s hunting and fishing culture – everything from seal hunting to the children’s herring market.

This year the museum welcomes its visitors to three new exhibitions. The humorous and fun family favourite “Ooh, poo!” is a temporary exhibition about various animal faeces, and another temporary exhibition “Kultändare” features photographs by artist Kenneth Bamberg. In the museum, Bamberg’s photographs are placed on objects from existing exhibitions, and when the worlds of art and cultural heritage come together, the exhibition takes on another dimension.

SEAL HUNTING MEETS AI

The hunting and fishing Museum’s permanent exhibition has been expanded with a

new exhibition about seal hunting. Join us on a journey through history, from the first people who came to Åland to hunt seals to today’s hunting practices. With the help of both multimedia and AI technology, the museum has created an exhibition that provides a deeper understanding of the subject. Black and white images have been coloured to give a more vivid picture of what life was like 100 years ago.

You will also learn more about fishing, spring bird hunting, different types of boats, weapons and trophies. There is a lot to discover here! Go on trivia quests, play games, check out the museum shop and try the pearl excavation.

THROUGH FIRE AND ICE

By following the Geo Path outside the museum, you will learn the geological history of Åland. Perfect also for geo catchers! Children like to climb around on the salmon boat Svanö.

Discover world-class maritime history

The Maritime Museum’s unique collections are an incredible experience. If you combine them with the interactive visitor experience on board the tall ship Pommern, the visit will be unforgettable!

The Åland Maritime Museum is about experiencing and discovering. The museum is filled with lots of story treasures and personal destinies. The museum’s unique objects include a genuine pirate flag, one of only two preserved in the entire world.

The museum visit becomes even more enjoyable when the whole family is having a good time. At the Maritime Museum, you can discover and learn together, and even try things out in practice. For example, can you distribute the cargo on a cargo ship without it tipping over? Treasure hunting with the museum’s mascot, the ship’s rat, Ruby, and the imaginative playroom “Ruby and the Sea” are also among the highlights.

In spring 2024, the museum will open its new special exhibition “What does a

sailor do without a ship?” This exhibition is about Captain and model builder Runar Husell, who built an incredible model of the four-masted barque Ponape from memory while he was a prisoner of war during World War II.

WELCOME ABOARD

Then take the footbridge over to the Pommern, the four-masted steel barque launched in Glasgow in 1903, which has sailed the wheat routes between Mariehamn and Australia. From May to September, you can come aboard and join a fictional 100-day voyage around the world. The exhibition brings to life everything you’ve discovered in the Maritime Museum’s collections, allowing you to feel and experience life on the Pommern with all your senses.

Fine arts and history on one ticket

Get an inspiring dose of fine arts and local cultural history by visiting the Åland Art Museum and the Åland Museum of Cultural History in Mariehamn, where these two museums share the same building.

A tour through Åland’s history begins at the Cultural History Museum of Åland, which presents the archipelago’s 7,500year history in its permanent exhibition. The Museum guides you through a chronological story from the time of the first arrivals to today’s global and self-governing society. Along the way, you will learn that the tenacious islanders have hunted seals, subsisted on agriculture and fishing, sailed the world’s seas and been a part of Sweden, Russia and now Finland. The museum also introduces Kastelholm Castle, Eckerö Post and Customs House and Bomarsund Fortress, and ties historical clues together into a single story.

The Cultural History Museum also presents several themed exhibitions. This

summer, you can explore stamps that carry stories about Åland.

CONTEMPORARY ART

The Åland Island Art Museum presents Åland art from a broad perspective, from paintings and sculptures to installations. The exhibitions of the art museum’s collection vary throughout the year with themes that are often surprising in both breadth and unexpected combinations. In addition, the museum hosts special exhibitions that continuously offer visitors new art impressions and influences.

This summer, the Art Museum presents a vibrant and captivating exhibition with works by HC Berg and Satu Kiljunen. The two artists challenge your senses and entice with the intricacies between the two- and three-dimensional expressions. In the autumn, there will be an exhibition by origami artist Juho Könkkölä from Finland.

BALTIC SHANTY FESTIVAL 2024

Shanties are rhythmic and uplifting work songs that sailors used to sing on sailing ships in the past, to make the hard work onboard a little easier. This year, the festival is held during The Tall Ships Races in Mariehamn. Enjoy cheerful shanties in the western harbour, performed by about ten shanty groups. The visiting sailing ships offer a beautiful backdrop.

The Tall Ships Races in Mariehamn

Joyous festivities with a maritime atmosphere are in store when The Tall Ships Races visit Mariehamn 24–27 July. Enjoy the mighty sailing ships, exciting gatherings and an unbeatable party atmosphere in the city.

The Tall Ships Races are an annual international ocean racing event. It has been organised by Sail Training International since 1956.

Every four years The Tall Ships Races are arranged in the Baltic Sea, and this summer it is Mariehamn’s turn to welcome sailing ships of various sizes from the 1980s to the city’s western harbour, including the stately Fryderyk Chopin and Grand Duchess Elisabeth. The ships will have made a “cruise-in-company” friendly sail from Turku to Mariehamn and will arrive at the western harbour on Tuesday 23 July, or on 24 July in the morning if they sail via Lappo or Degerby on their way to Mariehamn. The ships will stay in Mariehamn until Saturday 27 July, when it is time to start the competitive sailing towards Szczecin in Poland.

LOVELY FOLK FESTIVAL

During The Tall Ships Races in Mariehamn, you can look forward to a happy and lively folk festival in the city, filled with programme and fun for everyone. There will be food and drink, live music and entertainment, a market, and activities for both children and adults.

In the Esplanade and Badhusparken, market stalls and food trucks fill the area, and beside the Åland Maritime Museum in the English Park you will find the stage for the day’s performances. In the evening, the pulse and party atmosphere increases with music and entertainment on Badhusparken’s main stage.

The event area is free for all visitors and extends along the shoreline promenade in the harbour. Here you can stroll around and look at the ships and mingle with the crews, which make up almost 2,000 people. Look out for signs saying “Open Ship” –this means you are welcome on board as a visitor.

Theatre for all tastes

Everything from comedy to double drama, not to forget emotional storms. Let the play begin!

Intimate and skillful plays are a true sign of summer. This year, the theatre group Teater Gården invites you to the comedy “Two Men in a Tent 2,” staging Anders Larsson’s fantastic story about Vingle and Erbarmar, part 2. Vingle and Erbarmar meet again, a decade later, to camp and talk about old times. However, things don’t quite go as planned. In other words, this is a funny, absurd, and a bit quirky performance in the same spirit as the first one. The play is directed by Ulrika Bengts, and on the outdoor stage of GE-Villan in Mariehamn are actors Marc Svahnström and Alfons Röblom. The performances are in Swedish and will be held from 18 June to 6 July.

POETRY ON STAGE

Teater Ofelia stages ”A Cloud in Trousers” by Vladimir Mayakovsky in the old barn

at Pellas skipper’s homestead from July 18 to 25. In the monologue poetry meets theatre with Nicklas Lantz on the empty stage. Without props, but with simple and effective lighting and suggestive soundscapes between the four parts of the poem, the actor brings Mayakovsky’s words to life amidst the audience. The performance is intense, oscillating between stormy emotional outbursts and absolute deafening silences.

Also, keep an eye out for this summer’s productions at Bente’s summer theatre!

THEATRE IN THE AUTUMN

Teater Alandica confronts the autumn darkness by inviting you to Strindberg’s creepy double drama ”The Dance of Death.” Also, check the current productions of Teaterföreningen i Mariehamn.

Autumn weekend of countryside gems

There is a lot of Åland’s raw produce and artisan products to choose from at the Harvest Festival.

The Harvest Festival focuses on local raw produce and products, and there is a lot to choose from! There are many interesting farms and fun popup events to be visited during the Festival which is the biggest autumn event in Åland. One week before the event you can get a taste of what awaits at the Festival by enjoying of specially composed Harvest Festival menus at the participating restaurants. The chef competition Axganmästarna invites local restaurants to compete on local “axgan” dishes made from Ålandic ingredients.

The main event is on September 20-22. Many farms in the countryside open their gates to visitors. The farms sell cultivated, home-baked and locally produced artisan food, such as charcuterie, cheese, jam and

juice. Local arts and crafts are also on offer. Several farms also have a restaurant where you can enjoy local delicacies on site.

New this year is LokalTapiola’s “hop-on, hop-off” buses that take you to different Harvest Festival farms along a scheduled route on Saturday, 21 September.

PLAN YOUR FESTIVAL PROGRAMME

The programme of the Harvest Festival varies from day to day. Plan your own favourite route with a mobile app to catch up with as many farms as possible or focus on just a few of interest.

The spring festival Åland in Greenery is held in May and focuses on local fresh produce of the season.

Sparkling Christmas spirit

Christmas is celebrated thoroughly in Åland with many season’s markets and traditional Christmas buffets.

Get a taste of Christmas during the event “Åland Glimrar” which invites you to four sparkling weekends filled with Christmas spirit, from the first Advent to the fourth Advent.

Stroll around the Christmas markets, enjoy a cup of hot mulled wine and discover unique handmade Christmas gifts. Ålanders celebrate “Little Christmas” on the Saturday before the first day of Advent, on 30 November this year.

Jan Karlsgården’s traditional Christmas market is also held at “little Christmas”, There are sales of traditional Christmas delicacies, homebaked bread, candies, wreaths, candles, mustards, jams, juices and Christmas-style crafts. Don’t forget to enjoy a plateful of Christmas porrige after

the market at Smakbyn or Åland Distillery! Most of the stalls are outdoors so dress according to the weather! Parking is hard to find, so catch a bus from Mariehamn!

There are also several annual Christmas markets with sales of food and crafts in Mariehamn. One of them is held on the town square on 6 December.

CHRISTMAS BUFFETS

Both eastern and western Nordic food traditions are seasoned with local archipelagic delicacies and flavours in the traditional Åland Christmas buffet.

The restaurants Nautical in Marieham, Soltuna in Geta and Silverskär in Saltvik are three good choices for traditional Christmas buffets. Many restaurants serve Christmas buffets from the first Advent until a couple of days before Christmas.

Indigo Restaurant & Bar celebrates 20 years

Ever since the opening in 2004, Indigo Restaurant & Bar has been the cornerstone for those seeking good food and entertainment in Mariehamn.

Located at Nygatan/Strandgatan, the block surrounding Lilla Torget dates back to 1865. In the 1870s, shipowner and merchant Victor Starck commissioned the construction of a residential building, storehouse and bakery on the plot.

Today, Starck’s stone warehouse is the town’s oldest remaining stone building, which is now home to Indigo, the biggest draw on the block. Indigo has dubbed itself “your other living room”, and quite rightfully so. With its bar on the upper floor and outdoor dining in the summer, the restaurant is a natural gathering place for Ålanders and visitors alike. Here you’re sure to find something tempting, from a delicious lunch to a late night mingling,

sometimes music by DJs, and a dance floor. The ambiance ranges from casual elegance in the fine dining restaurant on ground floor to lively atmosphere on the upper floor. This makes Indigo an equally obvious choice for business lunches, family dinners and fine dining as for after-works, pub quizzes, and spontaneous drinks.

Indigo also offers a popular summer terrace and The Calypso Bar with nightlife, great cocktails, and music.

ROCK’N ROLL AROUND THE SQUARE

Equally relaxed but significantly more rock-oriented is the next door hangout Dino’s. Here, the kitchen serves good food while the bar and outdoor terrace invite you to billiards, music, and just to have a good time. Sometimes, there are also singer-songwriters and live music, especially in the summer.

THE CALYPSO BAR

The old stone warehouse at the small square in Mariehamn has stored everything from cement, spirits, and prisoners to glassblowers and potters. Today, the warehouse serves as The Calypso Bar, a popular summer club with refreshing drinks, great DJs, and a truly fun dance floor.

FOOD

Wide variety of small food producers

Artisanal foods are flourishing in Åland, thanks to outstanding raw produce and creative food artisans. It is easy to fill both the glass and the plate with local food and beverages.

During the harvest season it’s easier than ever to be an “Axgan” - in other words, to eat, drink and buy locally. Thanks to the many small scale producers and wide range of products, you can enjoy everything from fruits, green vegetables, meats and fish to sea buckthorn and honey. Many farms refine their own raw ingredients. Milk is turned into cheese at Mattas farm dairy, meat is used to produce tasty sausages at Marskogens Lamm sheep farm and organically grown grains are milled into meals at Överäng Mill. Perfect conditions for beekeeping provide firstclass honey and honey products, such as honey candies from Åland Honey. Apple growers such as Grannas, Snäckö Frukt

and Öfvergårds have refined their ability to make use of the entire harvest by producing fresh-pressed apple juice, chutney and pickled “äppelskott” (unripe windfall apples). Many farms and food artisans welcome visitors on guided tours.

GROCERY STORES

Keep an eye out for Odlarringen cooperative of organic farmers. Local organic products also include a wide range of flour and groats from Överäng’s mill. Ålandsmejeriet ÅCA has organic milk in its range. Farmers also sell fruit, vegetables and root vegetables through Ålands Trädgårdshall cooperative.

You can also buy local raw produce and organic food products direct from the farmers and food artisans through many networks, for example by joining the Facebook group REKOÅland.

Wine tasting and more at Vinsmedjan

Excellent hospitality, along with food and wines expertise, can be found at Vinsmedjan in Kvarnbo next to Kvarnbo Pensionat and Galleri Skarpans.

Visit Vinsmedjan’s summer café, open in July from Wednesday to Saturday. Enjoy fine wines by the glass, eat hearty sandwiches, creamy soups or choose delicacies from pastry chef Laura’s selection. Feel free to combine a coffee break with a visit to the July exhibition ”Woman Seas” by photo artist Tiina Tahvanainen in Galleri Skarpans.

Vinsmedjan’s popular wine tasting evenings start in autumn. Book a culinary wine tasting together with hostess and sommelier Ella Grüssner Cromwell-Morgan. The evening tastings have different themes, including food and wine combinations, and tastings of sparkling wines. The sessions start with an aperitive in the art gallery and continue at Vinsmedjan where

Ella presents four selected wines for the evening.

Together with her husband Martin, Ella has visited a great number of vineyards and offers fascinating anecdotes that enhance the entire tasting experience. A tasting platter with wines is a good starter and, for a main course, you can enjoy a hearty oven-baked seasoned bread, which is Vinsmedjan’s luxurious version of pizza.

PRESTIGIOUS CRAFT BEVERAGES

Fill your glass with tastes from Åland

Many Ålandic food artisans produce fine beverages. Everything from freshly pressed apple juice and lemonades to cider, beer, and noble alcoholic spirits.

Öfvergårds orchard presses its juice from first-class apples. Only one apple cultivar is used for each juice. This enhances the characteristic colour, flavour and character of the raw pressed juice. All different varieties of juice can be sampled in the farm shop’s juice bar. To describe and characterise the taste, the apple grower Öfvergårds has also had the help of Vinsmedjan’s sommelier Ella Grüssner Cromwell-Morgan. She describes Zonga juice as ”a white-yellow apple juice with great fruity sweetness and balanced acidity.”

First class apple juice is also available by the orchards Karl-Ers Frukt, Snäckö Frukt and Grannas Äppel. Snäckö, Grannas and Öfvergårds run farm shops. In addition,

Öfvergårds offers both apple safaris and picnics in the orchard.

Peders Aplagård on Kökar refines the orchard’s produce into non-alcoholic lemonades and soft drinks. Also visit Amalia’s Limonadfabrik in Lemland, which produces lemonade flavoured with raspberries, blueberries and black currants, among others. Aplagården and Amalias also have summer cafés and farm shops.

Charming trio of cafés in Mariehamn

If you’re looking for a cosy café for your “fika” break, choose from three charming cafés with old-fashioned style.

The cafés are housed in older wooden buildings in town, and you can almost sense as if they’ve always been there.

On Ekonomiegatan, near the little square, you’ll find the quaint café Bagarstugan in one of the town’s oldest houses. Behind the blue door of the red-painted wooden building awaits floral cups, crocheted tablecloths, an ecological approach, and a selection of delicious cakes. Don’t miss the secret little passage to the outdoor seating area, where you’ll almost have to stoop to slip beneath the rose trellis.

ALWAYS CLOSE TO FIKA

Equally cosy and equally filled with fika joy as Bagarstugan are Café Viktor and Svarta Katten.

Café Viktor is located at Torggatan 15, in the same building as the shop Viktor Craft & Design. The building dates back to the late 1800s, and the café is furnished accordingly. You’ll embark on a pleasant little journey through time while enjoying good coffee, homemade pastries, and delicious lunch dishes in the salon. There’s always a focus on locally produced seasonal ingredients.

Just as inviting is café Svarta Katten at Norragatan 15, with a garden. Here, you’ll find a charming little house with ornate woodwork, a white fence, a delicate iron staircase, and outdoor seating in the garden. The well-stocked display case offers everything from classic pastries to LCHF-adapted delights, and sugar-free and allergy-friendly options.

Scent of stone-oven baked sourdough bread

Is there anything more delicious than freshly baked rolls and a cup of coffee in the sun? Or, a warm slice of local “hemvete” whole-wheat bread?

You’ll find all this at Hotel Grelsby Strand, beautifully located on a slope overlooking the lake Snäckviken glittering in the sun. The stone building from 1930 houses Johannas Hembakta, a stone-oven bakery and a café, together with the hotel reception. Here, you’ll find hearty sandwiches and the most delicious pastries. The bread is baked of organic flower from the Överängs Kvarn mill, and almost always of sourdough. The assortment varies according to season and the baker’s mood, ranging from sourdough ciabatta and mini pizzas to levain and rye bread. There are also freshly baked buns, cookies, and other treats. The bakery also bakes the bread for the hotel’s delicious Åland breakfast. Keep an eye out for

Johannas Hembakta in the local grocery stores in Åland, and be sure to try their whole wheat hemvete-bread!

MORE TO EXPERIENCE

On the verdant hotel grounds, there’s an inviting generous lawn. On the beach, there’s also a wilderness bath and a floating sauna with a lake view. Both can be rented even if you’re not a guest at the hotel. Across from the bakery, there is the micro-roastery Rosterverket. Here, coffee lovers work hard to roast their way to the very perfect cup of coffee. The Stallhagen brewery with a popular gastropub is within walking distance. The hotel’s location in the middle of Åland is also perfect as a starting point for various excursions.

Mariehamn – Best town centre 2024

Mariehamn entices with a vibrant downtown and a wide and varied selection of services. The shops, cafes, restaurants, and attractions serve both Ålanders and visitors.

The association City Mariehamn and the Municipality of Mariehamn have actively worked to strengthen the town’s attraction, and it has paid off. It’s almost unique that a town the size of Mariehamn can offer so much shopping, dining experiences, culture, and events. The goal is to create and maintain a lively and pleasant downtown, filled with shopping, good food, experiences, and service year-round.

THE BEST TOWN CENTRE IN FINLAND

All the joint efforts in the town centre have also paid off. This year, Mariehamn was selected Finland’s Town Centre of the Year! In this small town there’s something for everyone - here you’ll find more than 70 shops and over 30 restaurants and cafés.

This makes both residents and visitors choose the downtown for shopping, dining, and socialising. Most of the shops are small and unique, selling both local products and international brands.

EFFORTS IN THE TOWN

In recent years, many efforts have been made to increase the town’s vitality and create a sustainable downtown. The pedestrian street has been furnished with custom-made benches and flower beds to add more seating and greenery. The square has a roof to shelter the market vendors. During the summer, the pedestrian street is extended and adorned with signal flags, flowers, and locally designed outdoor furniture. Here, you can happily sit in the sun and mingle, next to wild strawberry and flower beds. On the square, you can gather friends and family and play giant board games. From spring to autumn, there is a wooden box for pieces and ac-

FREE PARKING

Parking next to all shops, cafés and restaurants is free in Mariehamn. In the inner town, parking is limited to two hours. In the Sittkoffs underground parking garage and next to the Town Library, parking is limited to three hours. A parking disc is compulsory!

CARAVAN OR A MOBILE HOME

If you are travelling with a caravan or a mobile home, we recommend Gröna Udden campsite. The campsite is just over a kilometre south of the centre and offers excellent service and a lovely sandy beach.

THE TOWN OF A THOUSAND LINDEN TREES

cessories available for playing giant chess, ”Mensch ärgere dich nicht”, and dart with bean bags. You can also play hopscotch, compete in the labyrinth, or play in the new playground with your kids. From October to March, the town’s new winter lighting brightens up the darkness. The maritime-themed lighting installation features waves and compasses. At the square you can find the majestic glowing Råland the Elk.

THE PULSE OF THE TOWN CENTRE

Throughout the year, Mariehamn’s centre is filled with events and activities. Enjoy live music, activities, markets, and many more family-friendly events. Also, visit the summer flea markets, Open by Night in the autumn, opening of Christmas street, Christmas markets, winter holiday events, Easter markets, and Spring events.

Mariehamn is called ”the town of a thousand linden trees” because of the linden tree Esplanade between the Eastern and Western harbours. The town is also often called a maritime town, because of the proud maritime heritage and the importance of the shipping in the local economy. The well-being of the environment is important for an island in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The municipality is certified in environmental management according to the international standard ISO 14001.

STRONGER TOGETHER

City Mariehamn is a tripartite collaboration between the city center’s entrepreneurs, property owners and the city of Mariehamn.

MARIEHAMN

A walking-friendly town

Being close to everything is one of the advantages of a small town. Mariehamn is easy to discover on foot. The distance between the town’s two harbours is just over one kilometre, and the streets are paved with interesting history.

Mariehamn offers many exciting encounters between new and old worlds. Today the western harbour is the port for modern ferries and cruise ships, but here you can also see the tall ship Pommern, which was built in 1903 and is the world’s only fourmasted barque in its original condition. Combine a visit to the Pommern with the Maritime Museum for a deeper dive into Åland’s impressive maritime history.

Walk along the path up to Badhusberget’s lookout place to get a bird’s eye view of Mariehamn. Every afternoon around 2 p.m. you can see several ferries on the fairway to the port of Mariehamn.

In the western harbour you can find ÅSS Paviljongen and other buildings from the town’s spa resort era in the early 20th century. Then follow the Esplanade

towards the town centre. The Esplanade linden alley dates back to the original town plan from 1859.

At St. Göran’s Church from 1927 you can stop and admire the murals and window paintings. The church, as well as the buildings of the Åland Navigation Institute and the Town Hall are designed by architect Lars Sonck.

Another style of architecture can be found along Södragatan, one of the oldest streets in town with fin-de-siècle wooden houses designed by Hilda Hongell, born in Mariehamn and Finland’s first female Master Builder.

SUNBATHING AND SWIMMING

Mariehamn’s eastern seaside attracts with restaurants and shopping around the Torggatan pedestrian street. You can also visit the Cultural History Museum of Åland and Åland Art Museum, or enjoy of a dip in the sea by Lilla Holmen’s sandy beach where there is also a jetty, kiddie’s pirate ship and peacocks. The Maritime Quarter and Mariebad swimming centre are also favourites for all the family.

Water protection, recreation and biodiversity

The Town of Mariehamn works actively to reduce its environmental impact on the sea, beaches and waterways. As part of the environmental work, two wetlands and a newly constructed pond are open to visitors.

Construction of wetlands and ponds are two natural methods that are often used to purify water. Apart from recreation and enjoying the plant and animal life up close, the wetland also has an important function as a nutrient trap and a place for biodiversity.

At the far end of the bay, which lies along the eastern side of Mariehamn, there is Nabben’s multifunctional wetland that is open to visitors. The purpose of the wetland is to purify rainwater that flows into the bay and protect our biodiversity. Meadow flowers have been sown on the banks to attract butterflies and bumblebees. There are also nesting boxes for birds and the wetland has been stocked with pike fry.

AWARD-WINNING ENVIRONMENTAL WORK

The area is accessible with trails and ramps and information signs highlight notable flora and fauna in the area. Nabben’s wetland won the Nordic Council’s Environmental Award year 2022.

At the very end of the bay, on Mariehamn’s western side, there is Apalängen’s multifunctional wetland at the mouth of the Sviby river. While the wetland absorbs nutrients all year round, pike, among other fish, spawn in the shallow pond in March and April. The area offers opportunities for recreation with a hiking trail and a birdwatching tower.

To purify stormwater before it flows into the sea, the town has constructed a sedimentation pond in the Museum Park next to Lilla Holmen. Besides serving its purpose, the pond offers several recreational areas and places for peace and quiet. In the middle of the pond there is an illuminated sculpture.

LIBRARY STORIES

The beautiful Town Library of Mariehamn is wellstocked. Apart from borrowing books, you can find a wide range of daily papers and magazines. There is a generous section for kids, and a special Alandica collection with books written in and about Åland. The library arranges arts exhibitions as well as music and theatre performances, especially for children. Visit the library at Strandgatan 29.

THE MARITIME QUARTER IS A GEM

Amidst the charming red-painted boat sheds in the Maritime Quarter on Mariehamn’s eastern seaside you will encounter artists, artisans, smiths, boatbuilders and pizza makers in a cosy, pleasant little community. The Maritime Quarter is busiest in the summer, but it is a popular walking destination throughout the year. Sit down on the jetty, visit the museum or stroll around and enjoy the atmosphere. Visit the tiny sailor’s chapel for a silent moment. During the year, there are several events arranged, including a tar market and a Christmas market.

MARIEHAMN IN A MUSEUM

Would you like to see what Mariehamn looked like a century ago? Mariehamnsmuseet is a small museum displaying a miniature model of the town in the 1920s. The houses have been built according to original drawings and with small details, such as cats and chimney sweepers on roofs. The museum is located at Ålandsvägen 42, open from the middle of June until the middle of August between Tuesday and Sunday at 12-15.

MARIEHAMN

Beach volleyball, swimming centre and skate park

In Mariehamn there are activities for everyone. From sunbathing, swimming and beach life to playgrounds and adventure pools.

The skate park with various ramps was opened in Mariehamn a couple of years ago. It is centrally located below the library and next to Alandica Culture and Congress Hall. The park is free to use for everyone and here you can meet like-minded skaters!

BEACH VOLLEY AND SWIMMING CENTRE

If you like beach volleyball, Mariehamn is the place for you. There is one court on Nabben beach, one on Lilla Holmen and three courts on the beach next to Mariebad swimming centre.

PLAYGROUNDS

Mariebad is the swimming centre for all the family! Here you can swim in a regular eight-lane pool, or you can relax and enjoy the adventure pool with a water slide, massage jets, jacuzzi and a heated pool to swim out to. For the youngest, there is a corner with extra shallow pools. Massage and wellness treatments can be booked upstairs.

BATHING BEACHES

There are four sandy beaches in Mariehamn, at Mariebad, Nabben, Lilla Holmen and by the campsite of Gröna Udden. All of these are child-friendly, Nabben being the shallowest one and Lilla Holmen becoming accessible in the summer 2024.

Mariehamn has many playgrounds with swings, slides and climbing frames. Playgrounds are located at the town square, next to Alandica Culture Hall, and on Lilla Holmen. There is also a playground next to the Swedish Consulate, near ÅSS marina. See the map on page 96.

116 – www.aland.com

DISC GOLF AT BADHUSPARKEN

Badhusparken has a beautiful location on a hill above the Western harbour. The view over the sailing ship Pommern and ÅSS visitors’ marina is great. The 9-hole disc golf course is set amidst tall pine trees and lower crooked pines growing on the rocks. Discs can be bought at a local sports shop or you can rent them in a nearby ice cream kiosk in Badhusparken or at Åland tourist information office at Torggatan 6.

EXERCISE OUTDOORS!

Next to Idrottsparken in Mariehamn there is a short jogging track with varying terrain. There is an outdoor gym for everyone to use 24/7. There is an other outdoor gym next to Strandnäs school in northern Mariehamn. Baltichallen in southern Mariehamn also has a jogging track of a couple of kilometres, training stairs and an outdoor gym.

PLAY AND FUN IN WIRÉNSKA PARK

Mariehamn boasts a new playground next to the town square. In the planning process, the town has consulted children on their visions and wishes. The result is a playful park with fun activities for children of all ages. Among the new features are the almost 8-metre-high climbing frame with three slides, four trampolines at the ground level, a swing set with four swings, and a rocking ship big enough for several playful children.

MARIEHAMN

MAXINGE SHOPPING CENTRE

Just a stone’s throw from Mariehamn lies Maxinge shopping centre, next to Jysk and Stadium Outlet. Maxinge houses chain stores such as H&M, KappAhl and Clas Ohlson, as well as the fashion store of Modex, shoe shop Eurosko, and Team Sportia selling sportswear. Here you’ll also find Iwa Café & Bistro, Pizza Diablo, and the supermarket Sparhallen.

Telegrafen is Mariehamn’s new shopping gallery

Telegrafen is the latest addition to the shopping scene in Åland. Mariehamn with its shopping galleries is perfect for those looking for a wide range of shops, cafés, and restaurants close to each other.

Telegrafen Gallery on Torggatan 6 offers a brand-new meeting place in Mariehamn. The recently opened shopping gallery is an interesting construction in itself. Its façade is decorated with Åland’s first living green wall, while inside under the glass ceiling, you’ll discover one of the town’s oldest stone buildings—a former telegraph station dating back to 1928. This gives the entire gallery a sense of having a small square within the town. Restaurant Sjöfolk has its seating under the oak tree on the square and on the balcony overlooking the indoor facades. The former telegraph station houses Sjöfolk’s wine bar.

Inside the gallery you also find Åland Tourist Information and Visit Åland, Alko,

Varuboden City supermarket, Wykes Deli, Café Å, Zic Zac selling clothes, eyewear at Synsam and the organic hairdresser Ekoforia. Additionally, the indoor climate is pleasant year-round.

Despite being completely new, the facade of Telegrafen blends so seamlessly into the townscape that it feels like the gallery has been here for decades.

NEW SHOPS IN THE SITTKOFF GALLERY

Several shops and services have recently opened in Mariehamn’s other major gallery, Sittkoff on Torggatan 13. The newcomers are Normal, Din Sko and Rituals. Tara offers clothing for both women and men. Other shops include Lekia, Hasses Ur & Guld, and Wickströms Ur & Guld. Espresso House is a popular choice for a coffee break, while Sittkoffska Gården, Boquerian, and Hesburger serve both lunch and dinner.

SEAFARERS’ CHAPEL

At the far end of the breakwater in the Maritime Quarter stands a small white ecumenical chapel, proud and resilient like a weather-beaten dwarf pine in the archipelago. In the past, similar seafarers’ chapels dotted the main sailing fairways, always ready to welcome sailors in need of shelter and tranquility. The chapel was built in 2008 by young volunteers from various European countries. This year, the chapel is featured in the film ”Stormskerry Maja”.

Restaurant Smakbyn is a creation of chef and restaurateur Michael Björklund, winner of the Swedish reality show Robinson 2020 and renown master chef from several TV shows in Finland and Sweden. In addition to enjoy a delicious meal in his restaurant, you can book his cooking classes, cellar tours, or shop for artisanal food and crafts at the Smakbyn shop. On 28 September, the restaurant will be visited by top chef and restaurateur Johan Jureskog.

Smakbyn shares its premises with other creators. At the square, the heart of Smakbyn, you’ll find Ålands Karamelleriets candy artisans making candies from natural ingredients. Feel free to stop by and watch

the production before visiting ceramic artist Mia Englund’s workshop. If you’re curious about ceramics, Mia welcomes bookings for private classes. Alternatively, you can book other group activities in Smakbyn, such as bubble yoga, the battle of the chefs, tastings, or candy-making workshops.

A tip for July is to join Mia’s ceramic studio Thursdays from 11.00 to 17.00 o’clock, or a candy-making sessions at 12.00, 14.00 and 16.00 o’clock in the candy workshop.

ACTIVITIES IN THE DISTILLERY

Åland Distillery with a restaurant across the road is also part of the Smakbyn family. In July you can join summer activities, such as the Drop-In Tour & Tasting on Saturdays at 15.00 o’clock, or participate in the distillery’s quiz every Saturday, and hear live music on 5, 12, and 19 July.
