REMEMBER!
Åland has Eastern European time like the rest of Finland. While it is 12.00 o'clock in Sweden, it is 13.00 o'clock in Åland. The currency is the Euro.
SUBJECT TO CHANGE!
Please note that activities may be subject to cancellation and attractions might be closed. We recommend checking official websites and social media channels for the latest updates before planning your visit.
Discover Åland with Ålandstrafiken!
You can see a lot of Åland if you choose to travel by public transport. On the main island, rural buses operate, while archipelago ferries connect the islands in the archipelago municipalities.
On the mainland there are four main roads running in different directions. Along these routes, rural buses run on five lines, with buses on lines 4 and 5 being connected to the timetables of the archipelago ferries. A bus ticket is valid for two hours and you can change buses freely during that time. There are also bus services in the countryside if you want to see more of Åland along the smaller roads. In many archipelago municipalities you can also book a local taxi that picks you up at the ferry. In and around Mariehamn there are public buses.
TAKE THE ARCHIPELAGO FERRY
Where the roads end, the archipelago ferries take over. The ferries depart from Hummelvik in Vårdö to Osnäs/Vuosnainen in Gustavs/Kustavi and from Långnäs in Lumparland to Galtby in Korpo several times a day. To reach Vårdö you follow main road 2, a short crossing by cable ferry is included. The cable ferry runs frequently and does not need to be booked. From the Hummelvik ferry harbour you can then continue east in the archipelago to Kumlinge and Brändö via the Northern Line.
To visit Sottunga and Kökar in the southern part of the archipelago, take a ferry from Långnäs harbour, at the end of main road 3. If you want to travel between the northern and southern archipelago, there is the Intermediate line connecting Kumlinge and Föglö.
The easiest way to get to Föglö is from Svinö in Lumparland via main road 3. The Föglö ferry has many daily departures and cannot be booked. However, remember to make a booking for your vehicle for the ferries operating the Northern, Southern and Intermediate lines!
REMEMBER TO BOOK IN ADVANCE
A good tip is to book your trip in advance. You’ll get a 20% discount when you book and pay for your ferry ticket online. You also get the the same discount on the Föglö Line where you pay when onboarding the ferry. The fee for the vehicle ticket is always the same, no matter how long the ferry ride is.
No ticket is needed if you're just travelling between the intermediate ports in the archipelago – perfect if you want to explore more of the archipelago municipalities.
If your plans change, don’t forget to cancel. It saves you from extra fees and allows someone else to book the journey.

FOOD & ACCOMMODATION
Taste Åland – and stay a while!
Åland invites you to enjoy unforgettable restaurant experiences, cosy cafés, top-quality local ingredients, and world-class artisanal food. Stay a night or two – or longer. There’s accommodation to suit every taste.
A culinary tour of Mariehamn
It's easy to eat and drink well in Mariehamn –from breakfast to tasty lunches, coffee and à la carte dinners. Or why not try tapas or seafood?
Take a stroll through the centre of Mariehamn and discover four restaurants and a café. Each with its own charm, atmosphere and unique menu.
A POPULAR MEETING PLACE
Start your day with a long and hearty breakfast at Espresso House in Sittkoff Galleria in the centre of Mariehamn. Sit down for a great cup of coffee and watch the town come to life. You'll want to return here several times throughout the day for another coffee, a chat with friends, or for pastries, sandwiches and light meals.
Adjacent to Espresso House is the Sittkoffska Gården restaurant, which serves genuine home cooking at lunchtime, made with Åland ingredients. Here you will also find one of the town's best salad buffets, included in lunch. In the evening you can enjoy a delicious à la carte dinner.
AN OASIS WITH A MEDITERRANEAN FEEL
Looking for lunch, tapas, or a glass of wine in a sunny courtyard? Head to Boquerian – a charming spot offering a relaxed atmosphere, a glazed terrace, and Mariehamn’s cosiest courtyard dining. For lunch, the Boquerian offers the daily meat,
fish or vegetarian dish. In the evening, enjoy a menu filled with tapas, fine cheeses and charcuterie. Stop by the cheese and charcuterie counter and buy some of the selected delicacies to take home.
SEAFOOD AT THE DOCKSIDE
Brasserie Ångbåtsbryggan pairs great food with beautiful sea views in the eastern harbour. Both the walls and the ceiling are made of glass, giving it a great outdoor feel.
Here you’ll find fresh seafood platters and grilled favourites, all prepared in the open kitchen right in front of you. The grill is built from historic Åland bricks, and much of the brasserie’s interior has a story to tell.
ADVENTURE GOLF FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
Next to Brasseriet is Ångbåtsbryggan's Adventure Golf. Here you can have lunch, a coffee break or a refreshing drink. The 18-hole course is fun for everyone, young and old alike, and the spacious outdoor seating area offers sun and great views of the course.

A love of well-prepared food with a personal touch characterises Iwa Café & Bistro in Maxinge. Enjoy generous lunches, tasty coffee and flavourful dinners with that little extra.
The café menu's salads and hearty sandwiches are real favourites, including the classic Iwa salads Chevré, Caesar, Spicy Chicken Scramble and Poké Bowl – perfect for lunch or to take along in your picnic basket. The café also serves hot dishes, often with a modern take on home cooking.
For those with a sweet tooth, Iwa bakes buns, pastries and other treats in her own bakery. Vegan and sugar-free options are also available. The mini pastries are especially popular, with a wide range of tempting flavours.
VERSATILE BISTRO
When the lunch rush is over, Iwa's bistro opens. The menu ranges from light dishes to hearty favourites from around the world, inspired by Nordic, Asian and Mexican kitchens. The bistro attracts everyone from couples and families to groups of friends. That's why there are always burgers and a generous selection of kids' meals on the menu.
The café menu is served all day, and when the bistro opens at 3pm, you can order from both menus. The lunch menu changes weekly, while the bistro menu follows the seasons.
The bistro is wine & beer licensed and all food and pastries are available to take away. In addition, Iwa offers catering for both large and small events.
Ever since it was opened in 2004, Indigo restaurant & bar has been a natural meeting place for anyone looking for great food and vibes in Mariehamn.
Indigo calls itself ‘your second living room’, and for good reason. The restaurant with bar on the upper floor and the courtyard terrace in summer is really the place where both locals and visitors feel right at home. Indigo offers everything from a relaxed atmosphere and personalised service to a delicious lunch and dinner. The vibe shifts from casual elegance in the à la carte restaurant on the ground floor, to a more relaxed and familiar feel in the bar and bistro upstairs. Perfect for everything from business lunches and
family dinners to after work, pub quizzes and spontaneous hangouts.
WITH ITS HEART IN THE KITCHEN
The à la carte and bistro menus vary with the seasons, but the essence remains with well-composed flavours, beautifully plated dishes and attention to detail. Classic flavours and well-known dishes from different parts of the world are placed in new contexts.
You'll also notice that restaurateur Stig Grönlund is a wine lover. The carefully curated wine list includes everything from renowned labels to hidden gems.
When the sun starts to warm up, Indigo opens its bohemian-style courtyard where you can enjoy lunch or the bistro's summer-inspired menu. There have been quite a few favourites over the years, some so popular that they never leave the menu. No bistro or AW menu at Indigo is complete without the legendary Indigo burger or Toast Skagen! Of course, there's always a children's menu and the option to order smaller portions for the youngest members of the family.
Summer rain and chilly evenings are no problem – with a roof, sliding glass doors heaters and good company you'll stay warm and dry.
INDIGO IN 320 PAGES
You can also take a piece of Indigo home with you by buying the book FOOD WINE SPIRIT LOVE. The book was released just in time for the restaurant's 20th anniversary and contains everything that Indigo stands for – the food, the wine, the spirits and of course the love! A great gift for yourself or someone you love.
The Swedish edition MAT VIN SPRIT KÄRLEK is available at the restaurant and at local bookshops.
When the evening turns into night
A given part of the nightlife in Mariehamn is Indigo's bar and outdoor terrace and The Calypso Bar, where you'll find high spirits, great cocktails and fantastic music.
In the past, the old stone warehouse at Indigo has housed everything from cement, liquor and prison customers to glassblowers and potters. Today, the warehouse lives on as The Calypso Bar, Indigo's popular bar and summer club with fresh drinks, DJs and a fun dance floor.
During the summer, The Calypso Bar, and the courtyard terrace become the go-to spots for mingling, pre-drinks and late nights. There is room for large parties, couples on a date night or for anyone who
wants to sit with a drink and watch people in the evening sun. The music is always at the perfect level – and so is the atmosphere.
AUTUMN AND WINTER NIGHTLIFE
As autumn arrives, it’s time to head indoors. Nightlife continues, but with a different pulse. The darkness outside is met with warmth inside at the bar. Here you'll find broad smiles, warm hearts and a menu full of craft drinks and other goodies – from draught and bottle.
On Wednesdays there's a quiz with just the right amount of prestige and laughter, followed by Friday night after work. Truly a perfect warm-up for the coming
weekend. Here, various events are mixed in with DJ sets and every now and then the bar is transformed into a concert stage when KlubbEttan invites you to intimate live evenings with a large presence and a small audience.
WANT TO BOOK SOMETHING FOR YOURSELF?
Indigo has two chambre séparées - one for up to 10 people and a larger one for up to 24 – but you can also book the Calypso bar or the whole of Indigo if you're a really big group.
The secluded setting is perfect for private lunches, dinners, wine and beer tastings, birthday parties, or for work colleagues who want to avoid the hustle and bustle but still be close to the bar.
Food and drink with a sea view
ÅSS Paviljongen offers great food by the sea in one of Mariehamn's most iconic, a cultural-historical gem designed by Lars Sonck in the late 19th century.
The restaurant offers an archipelago feel in the city's western harbour, serving from lunch to late evening. Sit down indoors in the cosy restaurant, enjoy the terrace in the afternoon and evening sun, or book the small terrace house for a more private dining experience.
ÅSS Paviljongen is open from late spring to early autumn and offers everything from lunch and bistro-style food to à la carte. The menu includes both classics and seasonal dishes, with the Jägarsmörgåsen and Seglismackan being popular favourites. For those who like to party, there's the Friday AW and lively Coco Loco Saturdays on the terrace when the weather permits.
ÅSS is primarily a summer restaurant, but occasionally opens during the year for themed weeks with exciting flavours. From French cuisine to Japanese izakaya concepts, the ÅSS Christmas buffet is equally popular, and is particularly atmospheric when the snow falls over the harbour.
ALBIN CAFÉ AND PIZZA
The ÅSS Pavilion also houses the popular Albin café and pizza with outdoor seating by the water and a reputation for serving Åland's best pizzas. Come and see for yourself! On the pizza menu you'll find everything from pizzas like Matrosen and Gasten to Måsen and Lanternan.
Compagniet is our colourful restaurant – sit back and enjoy all the new and exciting flavours and impressions.
The coolest outdoor restaurant in town!
In our Garden, the barbecue is always on, the salads crisp and the drinks well chilled.
The nicest way to travel
If you were to book now, when would you be on board?
tallinksilja.com
It’s nice to be home, but nothing beats travelling. Out at sea or beyond, the very essence of travel unfolds during the journey. There is no shortage of beauty to admire while cruising to Åland through Finland’s glorious archipelago. Regardless of your port of departure – Helsinki, Tallinn, Turku or Stockholm. Soothing for the eyes, but also for the soul.
Relaxed elegance at Nautical
Enjoy creative cooking and surprising flavours served in an environment that combines white tablecloths with extraordinary dining experiences.
Ever since the Åland Maritime Museum opened in 1954, Nautical has been housed on the second floor of the same building. The panoramic view of Mariehamn's inlet and the sailing ship Pommern creates a unique atmosphere, where maritime history and innovation meet.
Inside the restaurant, much is the same with many brass details - but in the kitchen, time has been anything but standing still. Here, Åland's maritime heritage forms the backdrop for something new, exciting and delicious, where playful and innovative flavours are served for lunch, à la carte or as a tasting menu.
In summer, the NauticAltan outdoor terrace opens, offering lighter summer dishes with the same high level of high ambition as inside.
Archipelago cruise with M/S Sunnan II
Welcome aboard for lunch, day or dinner cruises at a pleasant pace through the Åland archipelago.
In addition to great food in good company, you get to experience Åland from its most scenic perspective. Enjoy local produce and seasonal flavours while the sea and the surrounding islands drift by. A buffet is served on board and on selected evenings there's also an à la carte menu. Keep an eye out for Sunnan's popular shrimp feast cruises.
On the upper deck there is a sheltered bar terrace, where you can relax with a drink. Live singer-songwriter performances are sometimes part of the experience.
M/S Sunnan II is moored in the eastern harbour, and is open at the quay when the ship is not cruising (dates and times on the website).
M/S Sunnan II is also available for group bookings or charters, for a cruise or a docked event.

A burger party every day!
Dahlman's new burgers aren't just tasty – they're also easy to find in the freezer! With colourful pop art packaging and finely ground Åland beef, the family favourite has really been given a boost.
Rain or shine, Dahlman's burgers make every day a burger party. You'll find two tasty options in your local freezer aisle: a 150g high rib burger made from 70% high rib and 30% brisket, and a 113g family burger with 94% beef.
BURGERS FOR YOUNG AND OLD
Dahlman's burgers are perfect for families with children – quick to prepare straight from the freezer and always reliably tasty. Pan-fy or grill, and let everyone customise their own favourite with toppings like cheddar cheese, ketchup, dressing, sliced tomato, lettuce and burger buns.
Adults and older children usually prefer the more generous high rib burger. It pairs perfectly with caramelised onions, aioli or crispy bacon.
Then serve the burgers with oven potatoes, French fries or corn on the cob, and dinner is served! Simple, delicious and appreciated by the whole family!
LOCALLY PRODUCED
The family business W.J. Dahlman started its business back in 1924 as a sausage factory in Mariehamn, and today it is a modern food industry. You can find Dahlman's range of locally produced ingredients in all grocery stores in Åland – from cold cuts, charcuterie and a large selection of high-quality sausages to entrecote and other selected cuts.
Whether you’re in the mood for a great meal, a game of pool, or simply a relaxing drink, you’ll find it all at Dino’s – right in the heart of Mariehamn.
Dino's Bar & Grill is open every day of the year and serves both lunch and dinner. The menu varies from daily specials to à la carte. The laid-back vibe is enhanced by hand-painted portraits of legendary musicians on the walls – always a great conversation starter at the table.
For those looking for entertainment, the bar offers billiards, darts, pinball and karaoke. During the summer, many also gather on the outdoor terrace with a terrace, large outdoor bar, evening sun and live music entertainment.
Dockside hangout and good food in the marina
In the middle of Mariehamn's eastern harbour and next door to Åland's largest marina is the Club Marin restaurant.
Club Marin attracts boaters, families with children, couples and groups for lunch, coffee and dinner. Sit down on the generous outdoor terrace or inside the restaurant and enjoy the dish of the day, bistro menu or à la carte as well as pizza, salads, sandwiches and homemade coffee bread – always with a nice view of the boating life in the marina.
In the evenings and on weekends, Club Marin invites you to hang out on the pier with evening sun, good drinks, live music and troubadours.
As Christmas approaches, Club Marin serves up its traditional Christmas buffet.

EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS
Close to your next adventure
Åland offers activities for everyone, no matter the season. Hike, cycle, kayak, or play golf. Try your luck at fishing, embark on an excursion, enjoy the serene nature, or take a refreshing dip in the sea. Whether you seek adventure or relaxation, there are endless opportunities to explore.
TIP!
A day in Eckerö filled with history, wildlife safari and great food!
Start your day in Eckerö with a museum visit
Amidst the boathouses at Käringsund's fishing harbour in Eckerö, Åland's Hunting and Fishing Museum awaits, filled with stories, experiences and archipelago history for both children and adults.
The Hunting and Fishing Museum is designed to resemble an old fishing village. Since its opening in 1995, the museum has been collecting memories, artefacts and stories of everyday Åland life on land and at sea, with a special focus on hunting and fishing. This year the museum celebrates its 30th anniversary.
Inside the charming building you will find exhibitions on seal hunting, springtime bird hunting, tools, boats, weapons and trophies. You can see how hunting and fishing have changed over time and how they have shaped life on the islands.
Children will find their own favourite in the herring market, a playful exhibit
inspired by a traditional herring market where you can sell, weigh and package fish. In the museum shop you will find gifts, books and Åland crafts.
PLAYFUL LEARNING
The museum offers more than just artefacts — it also features games, quizzes and hints, which are popular with younger visitors. Don't miss the Salmon Boat Svanö, where children love to climb around and fantasise about life at sea.
Outside the museum is the start of the Geotrail, a 350-metre-long nature trail that tells the story of Åland's geological history – ranging from the fiery prehistoric times to the traces left by the ice sheet. Equally educational for adults and exciting for children. Several geocaches in the area make the trail an extra fun experience for those who like treasure hunting with GPS.
Set in the heart of Käringsund’s picturesque fishing harbour, Bodegan is a cherished waterfront retreat, known for its delectable flavours, golden summer days, and easygoing spirit.
As you stroll along the pier, the aroma of fine cooking, the hum of lively conversation, and the warmth of the place invite you in. Bodegan offers an à la carte menu where timeless Åland specialities meet modern classics. From midday feasts to long, lazy evenings, there is something here for every family and lover of good food. Whether you choose the sun-kissed veranda, the old Salt Warehouse, or a table by the water’s edge, each meal is a moment to savour, framed by the beauty of the archipelago.
Just steps away, Bodegan’s quaint pub and small shop welcome you. Pause for coffee or ice cream with the little ones, sip something cool, or enjoy a light meal. With its nearness to the beach and Eckerö’s delights, the fishing harbour remains a lively meeting place for sailors, locals, and travellers alike.
Join a wildlife safari and meet red deer, fallow deer, wild boar, ostriches and llamas in the wildlife enclosure in Eckerö, Åland's own savannah.
It's an incredible experience to see these magnificent animals up close. The tour offers many memorable moments and great photo opportunities. You'll even get the chance to feed several of the animals.
The safari wagon starts at the car park next to the Åland Hunting and Fishing Museum in Käringsund and departs every hour during the high season. The safari ride takes about 45 minutes, with several stops in the 34-hectare wildlife enclosure.
SAFARI SHOP
Combine the tour with a visit to the safari shop. In addition to exotic meat products and ostrich eggs, you'll find souvenirs, coffee, soft drinks and ice cream. Perfect for a break while waiting for the safari wagon, or to round off your adventure.
Käringsund Resort is also a hub for a variety of sports and leisure events, with categories for both elite athletes and casual participants. Registration and information at www.alandevent.ax. 28-29.6 12.7 22–23.8 9-10.8

Located in the heart of the archipelago, Sandösund is the perfect starting point for exploring the islets and skerries. Kayaks and SUP boards are available for hire. You can also go fishing, play disc golf, hike or take a sauna. The floating sauna and shallow sandy beach are popular with guests and day visitors alike. PLAY THREE 18-HOLE COURSES
In 2024, the Slottsbanan course at the Åland Golf Club in Kastelholm was named Finland's best golf course with record-breaking scores for its scenic beauty, design, pristine condition and presentation. In addition, Slottsbanan has made it onto the list of Europe's Top 100 courses, where the tenth hole is considered one of the best in Europe.
There are a total of three 18-hole courses in Åland. In addition to the seaside Slottsbanan, there is also Kungsbanan at Ålands Golfklubb, a beautiful undulating 18-hole course with a forest character. Then finish the Åland Round with 18 holes at Eckerö Golf Club.
Enjoy scenic bike rides along the stunning island roads. Our ships takes you directly from Kapellskär to Långnäs and Naantali, from where you can easily continue along the various archipelago routes. finnlines.com
Tips for a safe cycling holiday
Cyclists love Åland's winding country roads with the opportunity to cycle in all directions. Sometimes along cycle paths, other times along charming village roads.
Cycling holidays in Åland are popular among leisure cyclists and road biking enthusiasts alike, who call Åland the Mallorca of the North, only better! This is thanks to the light traffic combined with superb roads and beautiful scenery. In total there are 1,100 kilometres of public roads and over 160 kilometres of cycle paths, perfect for cycling at any pace.
SAFE CYCLING – KEEP THIS IN MIND
The bicycle is a vehicle, and the same rules apply to cyclists as to car drivers. For cyclists, this means right-hand traffic both on roads and cycle lanes. Always look both ways at junctions and never ride straight into the junction.
As always in traffic, stay alert and adapt to the situation. Interaction with other road users is important, remember to signal in good time! Also check that you can turn safely, remember to look back before turning.
The safest way to cycle is in a single line. Bikes with more than two wheels must not be ridden side by side.
Don't forget a helmet and wear a reflective vest. A safe bicycle should also be equipped with a bell, working brakes, white reflectors at the front, red reflectors at the rear, two orange spoke reflectors, preferably a chain guard, and a front and rear light.
Before you head out, make sure you're familiar with the road signs. Have a nice bike ride!

Fun even in winter
When nature goes into winter hibernation, slalom slopes, ski tracks and icy surfaces come alive with active winter sports enthusiasts.
For downhill skiers, Åland’s own alpine centre Germundö Alpin in Saltvik draws slalom and snowboard fans to its slopes. If you want speed, choose Valter's steep slope, while Ekoslingan offers slightly calmer descents. For beginners, the Green Loop is the best choice, while the Tövelbranten snow park challenges all skiers with jumps and boxes.
The Åland Ski and Biathlon Centre uses snow cannons to create great trails for cross-country skiing on the exercise tracks at Vikingahallen in Jomala. Thanks to artificial snow, fresh tracks are available even in milder weather. When winter brings sub-zero temperatures and natural snow, ski tracks are laid at most jogging tracks around Åland. For example, Wiklöf Holding Arena, Ytternäs sports field and Backebergs sports field in Mariehamn, at Hammarvallen in Hammarland, at Breidablick and Godby upper secondary school in Finström or at the jogging tracks in Lemland. In good snowy winters, skiing on the golf course in Kastelholm is a tip for those looking for beautiful views and nice ski tracks with reasonably steep slopes.
ICE FOR LONG-DISTANCE SKATING
In cold winters with good ice conditions, Åland offers a unique experience for long-distance skating – from the sheltered inner archipelago and open bays to the frozen sea. Even during milder winters, lakes provide excellent alternatives for ice adventures.

Out at sea among lighthouses and excursion islands
On fine days, a trip to one of Åland's sea lighthouses is idyllic, almost magical. Not so on stormy days, when it's easy to understand why there are so many shipwrecks in Åland waters.
It's fascinating to try to imagine how lighthouse keepers once lived out on the isolated islands, especially during the winter months. At Lågskär lighthouse, the lighthouse keepers even lived there with their families. At most, around 30 people lived out on the island.
There are excursion boats to the Sälskär lighthouse north of Åland, departing from both Skarpnåtö in Hammarland and Snäckö in Geta. The lighthouse was manned from 1868 to 1949 before it was automated as the first lighthouse in Finland.
The Märket lighthouse is neither tall nor stately but captivating as it clings to its isolated rocky island. In high winds, the waves can crash over the entire island. The lighthouse was inaugurated in 1885 and automated in 1976.
ISLAND-HOPPING BY BOAT
Åland has many islands to visit. Book a boat trip or visit the islands by your own boat. The old pilot station at Kobba Klintar at the entrance to Mariehamn is easy to visit both with and without your own boat. When the flag is hoisted, the café is open. Rödhamn is one of Åland's popular guest harbours. The location and hospitality are cosy. On the island, you can enjoy the sea, sauna, food and buns in the café and the renowned Rödhamn welcome.
Actually, sunshine and swimming are enough to keep the whole family happy. Fortunately, Åland has plenty of both.
In Åland there are public beaches in all directions and for all tastes, and you'll always find one sheltered from the wind. For example, toddlers like sandy beaches, while older children want diving towers. Bambölevik in Finström has both, plus rocks, a lawn and a picnic table with a barbecue grill. The beach is in a sheltered bay where the water is often a little warmer than in other places.
The long beach in Degersand with an unbroken horizon to the sea in the west is popular with everyone. Here both young and old enjoy throwing themselves into the waves. When you need to refuel, there is a beach bar and a popular restaurant.
SUN AND SWIMMING EVERY DAY
Åland has over 30 public beaches. Västerviken in Haraldsby in Saltvik is also popular, with a sandy beach, diving tower and volleyball net, but it's not a shallow-watered beach. For families with younger children, Notplan in Kroklund is more suitable. It also has a diving tower, sandy beach and a beach volleyball court. Families with small children also like Bomarsund in Sund, Knutnäs in Geta and Klockarholmen in Lemland.
Sinting beach in the village of Degerby on Föglö is a real archipelago gem. It has a sandy beach, diving tower, bathing rocks and even a visitors' jetty for those who come by boat.
Mariehamn has three child-friendly beaches – Nabben, Lilla holmen and Gröna Udden.

During the Saltvik Viking Market on 24-26 July, Viking societies from east and west will gather in the Viking village in Kvarnbo. The days also offer food, drink and crafts for sale, as well as children's activities, music and entertainment.
Here you can hike along rocky beaches, cycle through lush green forests and enjoy the refreshing sea breeze. Explore picturesque villages, visit a medieval castle, fascinating museums, fish from the cliffs or kayak among the islands. Whether you are looking for an active holiday filled with adventure or a relaxing getaway focused on nature, self-care and culture, Åland has something for everyone.

Discover the culture and history of Åland
Visit a museum and learn more about Åland, from past to present. A tour offers fascinating places, interesting museums and exciting sights. There's something to discover for all ages, whether you're interested in seafaring, art or history.
Two museums under one roof!
29 MAY - 26 SEPTEMBER 2025
Discover Åland from the Stone Age to autonomy
The Cultural History Museum of Åland guides you through a chronological story from the time of the first Ålanders 7500 years ago to today's global and self-governing society.
CHILDREN'S TOURS AT THE CULTURAL HISTORY MUSEUM
This summer, children and families can join Kluris the mascot on a journey through time in a brand new audio track. Experience the different eras in a whole new way!
This summer's exhibition fills the art museum with tiny tiny stitches by artist Barbro Eriksson. She has embroidered metres of messages on textiles that have been in the linen cupboard for generations.
TAKE PART IN ÅLAND'S ART HISTORY! Karl Emanuel Jansson (1846-1874) was considered one of Finland's foremost artists. Come and see his work Åland Peasant Bride, also known as ‘Åland's Mona Lisa’.
Discover the well-preserved ruins of a medieval castle, visit Finland's oldest prison museum, and experience an Åland farmstead from the past.
Kastelholm Castle had its heyday during the 16th-century, when Åland was a Swedish castle county under king Gustav Vasa and his sons’ rule. The castle served as the administrative centre of the region for several centuries, hosting royalty and noble visitors alike. Children can step into the castle’s history by trying on period costumes – be it dressing as a princess or as a knight in real chain mail!
Discover the darker side of the castle as well, by learning about the women who were imprisoned there during the largest witchcraft trial in Finnish history. All these stories are brought to life by the castle's staff and guides who take you on a journey through the castle's unique history.
FARM LIFE AND PRISON HISTORY
Next to the castle you can explore everyday life on a 19th century farmstead at Jan Karlsgården's open-air museum. On Wednesdays in July the museum hosts craftsmanship days, where local craftsmen hold demonstrations on rope making, blacksmithing or butter churning. Kids will love the hands-on crafts and baking sessions that bring history to life.
The White Bear Prison Museum offers an insightful look into the evolution of punishment and prison life, from the harsh spittoon to the more humane facilities of today.
Explore Bomarsund Fortress, a key site in the Crimean War and Åland's demilitarisation.
As Åland became the Tsardom's outermost outpost to the West, Russia began building an impressive coastal fortress in Bomarsund in 1830. However, the fortress was never completed and was destroyed by French and British forces during the Crimean War in 1854.
BOMARSUND FORTRESS AND ITS PEOPLE
The exhibition in the Bomarsund visitor centre lets you experience the rise and fall of Bomarsund through films and selected objects. Before exploring the ruins, you will learn about life in and around the fortress, of both work and moments of leisure. You will also learn more about the area's strategic role in the larger political drama of the Crimean War.
Of course, you can visit the Bomarsund area without seeing the exhibition, but immersing yourself in the history beforehand will enrich your experience.
The visitor centre is open from May to September and the ruins can be visited all year round. There are two hiking trails in the area, as well as great views of Djävulsberget hilltop and the ruins of Notviken Tower.
DOWNLOAD THE AUDIO GUIDE
New this year is a family-friendly audio trail in the exhibition, where the mythical animal Skarp talks about several exciting objects. To listen to Skarp’s tales, you can gain access to the audio guide by downloading the Åland Museum app on your mobile phone. Welcome on board a real sailing ship
Back in 1903, the four-masted steel barque Pommern began sailing the world's oceans. Now, 122 years after her first voyage, she is docked in Mariehamn, awaiting your visit.
The Pommern joined the fleet of Åland shipowner Gustaf Erikson in 1923. Here she mainly sailed the wheat trade route between Europe and Australia. From May to September, you can step on board and join a fictional 100-day voyage around the world in the 1930s and experience seafaring life with all your senses. Start on the weather deck where you'll walk around with an audio guide and eavesdrop on the crew. While the adults listen to their audio guide, the children will hear Ruby, the quirky ship's rat, reveal her secrets on board. Ruby's eagerness and the soundtrack of the departure are so real that many young listeners have been convinced that the ship is actually going to
leave the dock. Below deck, you can relive the journey in two new ways. Firstly, by trying out tasks yourself, then a powerful weather experience awaits in the form of a sound and light show in the hold.
The Pommern's digital guide has everything you need to discover the ship. Explore the guide for free in the Bloomberg Connects app.
PRESERVING THE LEGACY OF THE POMMERN
The Pommern is alive with activity. Visitors can witness ongoing maintenance work using traditional craftsmanship, and most recently the renovation of the aft deck. At the same time, old skills and seafaring traditions are preserved. Visitors are welcome to stop by and feel free to observe the work in progress, and ask questions about this iconic ship’s upkeep!
Åland's Maritime Museum is full of fine collections, narrative treasures and personal life stories that range from the past to modern shipping.
The Åland Maritime Museum is all about experience and discovery. Best of all are the immersive environments that take you on board and show glimpses of life at sea in all times. For example, you can hoist the sails, see what the sailor packed in the seaman's chest or enjoy the splendour of the captain's saloon on the Herzogin Cecilie.
The museum's temporary exhibition ‘What does a sailor do without a ship?’ tells the remarkable story of captain and model builder Runar Husell. See the incredible model of the four-masted barque Ponape, built entirely from memory while he was a prisoner of war during the Second World War. Its astonishing size and intricate detail continue to impress visitors of all ages.
CHILD-FRIENDLY MUSEUM
Visiting the museum is extra fun when the whole family enjoys it. At the Maritime Museum, children and adults can discover and learn together, and even try things out in practice. Can you, for example, distribute the cargo on the freighter without it tipping over? The treasure hunt with the museum's mascot, Ruby the ship's rat, and the imaginative playroom ‘Ruby and the Sea’ are among the highlights. Don't miss the genuine pirate flag, a real treasure! Combine your visit to the Maritime Museum with a visit on board the Pommern. The ticket includes both visits.

A house full of stories, art and play
The most impressive building in Eckerö is the yellow Post and Customs House, built in 1828 and designed in grand Empire style by architects Carl Ludvig Engel and Carlo Bassi.
This year, the Post and Customs House is attracting visitors with several new exhibitions. Begin your visit on the ground floor with POST & CUSTOMS, an exhibition that takes you through the fascinating history of postal route and customs practices. Then head upstairs to discover this year's summer exhibition CLAY, which celebrates Åland ceramists Judy Bradley, Paul Bradley, Mia Englund and Marilinn Lund.
Finally, on the same floor, you can take a tour of ‘Ålandic crafts and design – a collection under construction' showcasing selected pieces from the Åland Museum's growing crafts and design collection.
Also worth seeing is the museum shop, which is filled with locally made products.
POST OFFICE ADVENTURE FOR KIDS
Children love to follow the mascot Ekke through the nearly 200-year-old Post and Customs House. The colourful children's room, designed as a playful post office, invites young visitors to stay and enjoy hands-on arts and crafts, while adults enjoy the arts and crafts, design and history of the house on the other floors.
The Post and Customs House also has a sheltered courtyard, which is perfect for energetic little ones, and offers swings and a sandbox.
Finish off your art and culture experience with a coffee or a bite to eat at Café Stallet in the first wing of the Post and Customs House, with outdoor seating on the terrace.

Discover one of the world's finest archipelagos
Åland has so many islands that even the locals haven’t explored them all. In total, there are around 6,700 islands and islets scattered in the archipelago. How many can you discover in a single day?
Kumlinge from north to south
Kumlinge consists of the main islands Kumlinge, Enklinge, Seglinge and Björkö. All with unique nature and character, from coniferous forests on northern Enklinge to lush hazel groves on southern Seglinge. Nature is always close by – you can explore marked hiking trails, take a kayak trip or fish from a boat in all seasons. www.kumlinge.ax
A magical island
In Kökar, the fascinating island of Källskär beckons with interesting ice-age formations and unexpected environments created by Baron Göran Åkerhielm in the 1960s. He loved hosting guests, one of the most famous being the author and artist Tove Jansson. During the high season, guided tours depart daily from Hotel Brudhäll. www.kokar.ax
A harbour stop in Sottunga
The harbour in Sottunga is a lovely meeting place, whether you arrive by archipelago ferry or your own boat. Enjoy a visit to the summer restaurant Salteriet, known for its Wiener schnitzel, and stay at Strandhugget B&B. You can also enjoy a round of disc golf, borrow a bike or take a dip in the sea. www.sottunga.ax
Culture in large and small doses
Vårdö author Anni Blomqvist's novels about Stormskär's Maja were revived as a film last year. On the island of Simskäla, you can visit her author's home Strömmen. In Vargata you will find Åland's smallest museum, an old telephone booth with an exhibition on the history of the tele communications. www.vardo.ax
Join us for more archipelago adventures
Åland consists of a main island in the west and six archipelago municipalities scattered in a marvellous myriad of islands in the east. The larger ones are inhabited and you can get to them by boat or by the local archipelago ferries.
Each archipelago municipality has its own charm – from Finland's smallest municipality Sottunga with just over 100 inhabitants to Kökar in the southern outer archipelago. Discover the lush apple orchards of Vårdö and the island municipality of Kumlinge, surrounded by waterways in the centre of the archipelago.
What they all have in common is the ever-present sea and nature – and warm hospitality. Choose between a cottage,
hotel, guesthouse, campsite or marina, then just settle in and enjoy archipelago life. Visit the archipelago's restaurants and cafés or shop for local produce in the small but well-stocked grocery stores.
THE SIGHTS ARE MANY
In the Middle Ages, King Valdermar's sailing route passed through Kökar, where a seafarer's chapel and a Franciscan monastery were built on Hamnö. Today, you can visit the monastery cellar with finds from the monastic era.
On Enklinge in Kumlinge, Hermas archipelago homestead tells the story of the hard life of fishing farmers. Also visit Kumlinge church with its impressive murals.
On Vårdö, the Åland School Museum, Seffers Homestead and Wennström's general store offer glimpses of local life through the ages. Worth seeing on Sottunga is the red chapel, one of three wooden churches in Åland.
ACTIVITIES ALL YEAR ROUND
Hire a bike or kayak if you want to get close to nature. Or explore the great hiking trails in every municipality. You can also go fishing, play disc golf and tennis, work out at the gym or sunbathe and swim. Discovering the archipelago is easy. Take your car or bike on the archipelago ferries, or visit the islands by boat – there are many guest harbours. Kumlinge even has an airfield!
WANT TO STAY LONGER?
The archipelago municipalities welcome new residents and attract them with fibre networks, seaside accommodation and most importantly – real quality of life! Contact the municipalities if you are interested in a tour of day-care centres, schools, libraries and residential areas. Discover life in the archipelago!

Föglö is buzzing all summer long
Come out to the archipelago and celebrate Midsummer, swing to rockabilly beats, and dance the night away to the sounds of Lasse Stefanz during the dance band festival.
There are cosy evenening markets in the village throughout the summer, and on 20 June, the traditional Midsummer is celebrated in three different villages. Föglö Day on 28 June is also a real highlight with a market and activities on the square in Degerby.
THE LONGEST DANCE BAND FESTIVAL IN THE NORDICS
July brings a full week of music, dance and joy. Get ready for Åland’s Dance Band Festival at the village square and at the archipelago restaurant Seagram that hosts the eight days of dancing – the longest dance band festival in the Nordics! Here you can combine good food and drink with a stroll along the beach, the dance floor is right by the water. The line-up includes some of Sweden's best dance bands, such as Lasse Stefanz, Larz-Kristerz and Casanovas.
At the same time, the Countrytorget village event takes place on 4–13 July with food, drink, music and free entry to the square in the middle of Degerby. It delivers a retro vibe with rockabilly tunes, classic brewskies and 50s–60s hits.
Seagram then continues to fill the summer and autumn with sing-alongs, various bands, a shrimp feast and Oktoberfest.
Many people also choose Föglö for its tranquillity and nature. In addition to dancing and singing, there is everything from disc golf, nature trails and museums to beaches, forest yoga and farm visits.

Together for a healthier Baltic Sea
The Baltic Sea remains one of the most polluted seas in the world – but there is hope. Together we can turn things around!
The Baltic Sea Fund's goal is to one day be able to highlight the Baltic Sea as a successful example and tell a success story of a healthy sea. The road ahead is long, but through joint efforts we can make a difference.
For over 35 years, the Baltic Sea Fund has contributed to this positive development by rewarding, supporting and inspiring passionate people, researchers and organisations working for the good of the sea. In total, more than €1.1 million has been awarded to almost 120 winners.
To create change, we also need knowledge. That is why the Baltic Sea Fund invests heavily in educating children and young people. Thousands of pupils in Sweden and Finland have received school materials explaining how we all affect the sea – and what we can do to protect it.
HOW YOU CAN HELP THE BALTIC SEA
Small choices in everyday life make a big difference. Eat fish like perch and bream to favour the balance of the Baltic Sea ecosystem, choose eco-labelled products, leave no litter in nature – and keep all sewage out of the water.
Want to do even more? Then you can support the work of the Baltic Sea Fund. Find out more at www.ostersjofonden.org.
Mariehamn – the capital of Åland
Discover the town where everything is within easy reach. A charming centre filled with shops, restaurants, experiences and services awaits you – all year round.
It's no coincidence that Mariehamn was named ‘Town Centre of the Year’ in Finland in 2024. It combines small-town cosiness with big-city offerings. Whether you want to shop, enjoy culture and history, take a dip in the sea or just stroll along the beaches, everything is close at hand.
A VIBRANT TOWN CENTRE ALL YEAR ROUND
The town centre has almost 70 shops and over 30 restaurants and cafés, making residents and visitors alike choose Mariehamn for shopping, eating and mingeling. The shops are small and unique, with a fine selection of local products and international brands. The centre of Mariehamn is buzzing with life all year round, with events and activities for the
whole family. From Easter markets and summer flea markets to themed days, live music and atmospheric Christmas events. During the summer, the square and pedestrian streets come alive. Flowering plants in specially designed Åland-style summer furniture create an inviting atmosphere where you can sit down for a break in the sun. In winter, the maritime-themed lights twinkle above the streets, and at the majestic, the stately Råland the Moose lights up the darkness.
PARK FOR FREE WITH A PARKING DISC
Parking is free in Mariehamn. Use a parking disc to park for two hours in the town centre and three hours in nearby parking lots. For longer stays with a motorhome or caravan, Gröna Uddens Camping, just a kilometre from the centre, is recommended.
DISCOVER THE MARITIME QUARTER
Artists, craftsmen, blacksmiths, boat builders and pizza makers meet in a cosy community among the red sheds in the Maritime Quarter in the town’s eastern harbour. It's at its busiest in summer, but the area is open all year round and is always popular as a walking route. Take a seat on the quayside, visit the museum or wander around and soak up the atmosphere. The Seafarers' Chapel has a peaceful tranquillity. Several events are organised throughout the year, including a tar market and Christmas market.
A NATURAL MEETING PLACE
The blue town library is an attraction in itself, both inside and out. Here you can read or borrow books and magazines. The library also offers free Wi-Fi and board games to borrow. In addition, exhibitions and events are often organised, also for children. Younger visitors are particularly attracted by the cosy children's section with its story room. Don't miss the Alandica collection with most of what has been written about Åland. The library is located next to the bus station, at Strandgatan 29.
SEE MARIEHAMN IN A MUSEUM
Want to know what Mariehamn looked like a hundred years ago? Visit the Mariehamn Museum where a miniature model of Mariehamn in the 1920s is on display. The houses have been built according to original drawings and many fun details are included such as cats and chimney sweeps on the roof! Summer opening mid-June to mid-August Tuesday-Sunday 12–15. The rest of the year Saturdays 14–16. The museum is located at Ålandsvägen 42.
Nature and recreation in the urban environment
Ever since Mariehamn was founded in 1861, green areas for rest and relaxation have played an important role in the town's character. From the lindentree-lined Esplanade to Tullarns äng nature area and the popular Lilla Holmen recreation spot, nature is always close by.
The Town of Mariehamn is actively working to reduce its environmental impact on beaches, sea and waterways. As part of this work, two nature-based methods are used to purify water: wetlands and ponds. The town's organisation is also environmentally certified to ISO 14001.
MULTIFUNCTIONAL WETLANDS
Mariehamn's multifunctional wetlands filter rainwater before it flows into the sea,
capture nutrients, and support biodiversity. They are also inviting spaces for visitors, with footpaths, wooden walkways, benches, and viewpoints, as well as signs describing the rich animal and plant life. Visitors can both read about the ecosystems and experience them up close.
The Nabben wetland is located at the far end of the bay on the eastern side of Mariehamn. The town has planted meadow flowers on the banks to attract butterflies and bumblebees, put up birdhouses and planted out pike fry. The Apalängen wetland, at the far end of the bay on the west side of the town, has a bird tower and a shallow pond where pike spawn in spring.
GREEN OASIS IN THE TOWN CENTRE
To purify the stormwater before it reaches the sea, Mariehamn has created a sedimentation pond in the park below the Åland Museum of Cultural History. The pond is also a beautiful place for recreation, with several seating areas and an illuminated artwork in the centre.
From the pond, you can walk westwards under the canopy of linden tree in Esplanade or stroll southwards through the biodiverse of Tullarns äng wooded meadow.
FAMILY-FRIENDLY BEACH IDYLL
Another popular green oasis is Lilla holmen, a recreational area that has been part of the everyday life of the
town-dwellers for over 150 years. The family-friendly sandy beach is as popular with sunbathers and swimmers on hot summer days as it is with brave winter swimmers. What's more, the beach is accessible with a ramp into the water, a spacious changing cabin and the possibility to borrow a beach wheelchair from June to August.
For visitors who want to be active, there are balance beams, obstacle courses, climbing frames, swings, a beach volleyball court and various games to borrow. You can also visit Lilla holmen's chickens and rabbits.

A town on the move
Mariehamn is a town full of activities for all ages. Whether you want to walk, slide, swim or challenge your friends to beach volleyball, there is something here for you.
The town square is a natural meeting point in the heart of Mariehamn. From spring to autumn, you can borrow life-sized board games and accessories from the wooden boxes and host your own tournaments in giant chess, Ludo or pea bag darts. For younger visitors, a brand-new playground offers fun for hours – featuring an almost eight-metre-high climbing frame, three slides, in-ground trampolines, swings, and a rocking ship.
There are over 20 public playgrounds in Mariehamn, many adjacent to beaches and parks. Miramar Park, between the Alandica Cultural and Congress Centre and the town library, offers both a popular playground for children and a skate park where both
SPORT AND LEISURE www.mariehamn.ax/idrott-och-fritid
beginners and seasoned pros can test their skills.
CLOSE TO EVERYTHING
Mariehamn is easy to discover on foot. The distance between the town's eastern and western harbours is just over a kilometre. In Badhusparken on the western side there is a disc golf course with 9 holes. You can borrow discs from Åland Tourist Information at Torggatan 6.
If you feel like swimming, there are several beaches to choose from, such as Nabben, Lilla holmen and the beach at Gröna Udden campsite. All are familyfriendly, Nabben being the shallowest.
If you like beach volleyball, there is a court at Nabben beach, one at Lilla holmen and three outside Mariebad swimming centre.
DISCOVER MARIEHAMN ON FOOT
Enjoy a walk along the trails alongside the shoreline of Mariehamn. In the west, the paths along the rocky shores has wooden stairs and ramps. Take a seat on the rocks or benches to enjoy the view and the evening sun. The eastern shore is more low-lying. Here you pass marinas, sandy beaches and the meadow nature park Tullarns äng. For themed town walks visit: www.mariehamn.ax/stadsvandringar
FREE OUTDOOR EXERCISE
Mariehamn has several exercise tracks and outdoor gyms that are free to use – perfect for those who want to raise their heart rate or do some strength training. Choose between Idrottsparken in the centre of Mariehamn, Backeberg in the north or the Baltichallen area in the south, where there's also a 36-step exercise staircase. The newest outdoor gym is located outside the Mariebad swimming centre.

The festival that rocks the streets of Mariehamn
Welcome to Rockoff Festival, the big summer music festival in Mariehamn. From 18–26 July, the square will be transformed into a lively festival area with stages and catering.
The whole town comes alive during Rockoff week, which attracts crowds and a happy atmosphere. For nine action-packed days, people gather in the square to enjoy good company, great food, music and the unbeatable feeling of summer.
The programme offers a good mix of artists with a wide range of different music genres. The line-up is also varied, with both new idol stars and long-time favourites performing.
FAVOURITES FOR EVERYONE
Each night of the festival features concerts by one or more artists, and the different nights often have different focuses. Artists who are favourites among children and
young people are usually given the honour of opening the evening. Between concerts, the festival's house band entertains on the small stage.
This year you can look forward to artists such as Miss Li, Marcus & Martinus, Anis Don Demina, Maja Ivarsson, Sonata Artica, Estraden and the favourite KAJ.

Katrina's life story as musical theatre
Discover Sally Salminen's well-known novel character Katrina when the acclaimed musical theatre returns to Alandica with choir and large orchestra.
From the moment the curtain rises until it falls after the final act, Katrina is on stage, introducing us to a hard-working archipelago woman and mother who doesn't hesitate to challenge the village's strongman. The lead role is played by award-winning mezzo-soprano Erica Back. The production is directed by Ida Kronholm with a newly written script by Kronholm and Carina Karlsson. Jack Mattsson's music and Lars Huldén's lyrics once again bring the story to life, performed by soloists, orchestra and the Katrina Choir.
Chamber music with enchantment and magic
In August, Åland will be transformed into an oasis for music music lovers when the Katrina Cultural Association invites you to a 5-day festival of chamber music with 15 events at 9 different venues.
This year's theme is inspired by H.C. Andersen's classic ‘The Little Mermaid’ and the festival captures composers who have been inspired by the sea. From storm and calm to the silence beneath the surface. This year's festival composer Minna Leinonen has a strong commitment to land and sea, which is evident in her music-making. The festival's artistic director Cecilia Zilliacus, in turn, takes the audience on a musical water voyage from classical masterpieces to contemporary compositions.

Alandica Culture and Congress Centre in Mariehamn is Åland's largest venue for concerts, performances, conferences and festive gala evenings.
Thanks to its flexible spaces, Alandica has hosted many cultural events, such as concerts, opera, theatre and dance performances. It has also hosted circus acts, magicians and illusionists. Over the years, many big names in stand-up comedy have also performed here. Next up is Carl Stanley in September 2025, but the line-up also features artists such as Niklas Strömstedt, Orphei Drängar, The Legends and many local acts.

A weekend filled with rural treasures
Every autumn, the Åland countryside is transformed into a folk festival when farmers and producers welcome visitors to their farms during the Harvest Festival.
As Åland's biggest autumn event, the Harvest Festival offers a weekend filled with everything from tractor safaris to straw jumping. Pet the animals, take part in the autumn harvest and sample pickled, juiced, smoked and other delicacies of the Åland food culture. During the days you will not only get to taste Åland, you will also meet the people who make the place special. Visit their farms and discover gems you might otherwise have missed – all in the middle of the best harvest season!
Experience the magic of Christmas in Åland
Enjoy the many highlights of Christmas in Åland. With cosy markets and Christmas buffets set up, it doesn't take long for the Christmas spirit to set in.
You can get a taste of Christmas as early as the end of November, when the weekends start to fill up with events that create a Christmas feeling.
Stroll around Christmas markets, enjoy hot mulled wine and find unique Christmas gifts, most of which are produced in Åland.
COSY CHRISTMAS MARKET
On the Saturday before Advent, this year on 29 November, Ålanders celebrate their Little Christmas. This is also the day of the
traditional Christmas market at the Jan Karlsgården open-air museum in Sund. Most things associated with Christmas are sold here – food, bread, sweets, wreaths, handmade candles, mustard, jams, juices and various Christmas-style crafts.
After the market, you can enjoy some Christmas porridge at Smakbyn or Åland Distillery – or buy something tasty to eat from one of the market's food carts. You'll find everything from hamburgers from Bolstaholm and Ledholmare with fried Baltic herring to Våffelrakan's crispy potato waffles with various toppings.
Keep in mind that most vendors are outdoors so dress for the weather! Parking
is limited, so take the bus from Mariehamn. Mariehamn also hosts several Christmas markets, mainly selling food and crafts. Vendors line up in the square on 6 December as the Town of Mariehamn erects the Christmas tree. In Sjökvarteret, the Maritime Quarter on the eastern shore, there is usually a market with quality crafts.
TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS BUFFETS
The restaurants' Christmas buffets combine Finnish and Swedish food traditions and are flavoured with Åland delicacies. The restaurants Nautical in Mariehamn, Soltuna in Geta and Silverskär in Saltvik
are three excellent choices when it comes to traditional Christmas buffets. The restaurants set up their Christmas buffets just before Advent to a few days before Christmas.
CONCERT AT CHRISTMAS TIME
There's nothing like a December concert to bring Christmas peace, with familiar tunes – and some new favourites. Preferably surrounded by the glow of candlelight. Every year, Christmas concerts are held at Alandica in Mariehamn and in churches around Åland.
Experience Åland all year round! There’s always something to do here. From sparkling summer festivals to cosy Christmas markets. Enjoy concerts, theatre performances, art exhibitions and traditional events. Whether you’re interested in music, culture or just having a good time, there’s always something for you in Åland.

CRAFTS & SHOPPING
Golden gems to take home
Åland offers charming boutiques, local artisans and one-of-a-kind treasures. Here, traditional crafts meet modern design, vintage, speciality shops and yard sales. Whether you're looking for a gift, something for the home or a souvenir from your trip, there's plenty to explore – often with personal service and a genuine local touch.
Crafts and creativity at SALT
The red craft house SALT is located on the quayside in Sjökvarteret, the Maritime Quarter of Mariehamn. Here, six artisans have workshops and sales in an inspiring community.
In addition to fine objects by ceramicist Siv Linney and textile artisans Ann Granlund, Gunilla von Nandelstadh, Ilse Berg, Marie Lundgren and Anna Nilsson, the shop is filled with handmade creations and award-winning food crafts by selected Åland craftsmen and food creators. Here you can indulge in beautiful and creative crafts – from textiles, silver, ceramics and glass to wood, ironwork, apple juice and chocolate.
The colourful impressions then continue among all the hand-printed fabrics, woven rugs, beautiful jewellery, shapely ceramics, needle felted cushions, knitted mittens and all the creative reuse.
It's great to know that you can always meet one of SALT's artisans in the shop. Take the opportunity to ask your crafting question!
EVENTS IN SJÖKVARTERET
SALT likes life and movement and is happy to participate in various events in the Maritime Quarter, such as the popular tar market in early spring, Åland Harvest Festival and the Christmas market. Café SALT also opens then, always with good home baking and often accompanied by swinging music.
SUMMER EXHIBITION
This summer, SALT opens up the upper floor for an exhibition of arts and crafts. The theme is ‘Shimmer and shards’, where the craft centre displays textiles in various forms, ceramics, metal and woodwork.
A great meeting place for wine, food and shopping can be found in the Telegrafen shopping centre on Torggatan 6 in Mariehamn.
Although Telegrafen is a brand new building, the facade blends so well into the townscape that it feels like it has been here for many decades. The building is also an attraction in itself. The exterior is adorned with Åland's first living plant wall and inside Telegrafen one of the city's oldest stone buildings is preserved.
WINE BAR AND RESTAURANT
The charming amplifier station from 1928 now houses Åland's only wine bar, decorated in an art deco style that breathes 1920s elegance. Here you can take part in wine tastings or sit down and enjoy a charcuterie board and selected wines in the relaxed setting.
In the square outside the wine bar, the Sub & Pasta restaurant serves a wide selection of subs with different fillings and pasta dishes for both lunch and dinner. Choose from ready-made options, or pick your own favourite sub. Then sit down under the oak tree and enjoy the flavours.
A TOWN WITHIN A TOWN
The square, the wine bar, the shop fronts and all the little alleys give the whole Telegrafen the feeling of being a town within a town. In addition to wine and good food, the expanding selection also includes Åland's tourist information centre, Alko, the clothing store Zic Zac, Synsam, Designmagasinet, the eco hairdresser Ekoforia and Dagmar's delicatessen.

Dress to lift your mood – follow Marie's philosophy
Over the last 15 years Marie Backman-Thors has set about sharing her love of colour, patterns and clothing through her brand Dress Like Marie.
Marie runs both online and physical stores with her daughters Lisa and Emelie. The design process is deeply collaborative with each garment speaks directly to Marie's philosophy - that what you wear has a direct impact on how you feel.
In the store, we will help you to emphasise your uniqueness and find the pieces that work with your figure and personality. Sometimes it's just about being challenged and daring to try new things. At Dress like Marie the goal is to help women find their style and become more confident in it.
Visit Marie in her shop in the centre of Mariehamn at Torggatan 12, or see the range in the webshop: www.dresslikemarie.com
5 STYLING TIPS FOR THE APPLE SHAPED FIGURE
1. Choose loose-fitting garments that fall nicely – garments in soft and supple materials that do not tighten around the stomach give a flattering impression.
2. A-line styles are your best friend – they create a nice silhouette and give an airy and comfortable drape.
3. Layering is the key– a longer open cardigan or blazer lengthens and balances the body.
4. Pattern and colour can be used strategically – small patterned garments, diagonal lines and monochrome outfits can create a harmonious look.
5. Opt for stretchy, high-waisted skirts –they smooth out and give a comfortable fit without cutting in. You can find more styling tips at Dresslikemarie.com/blog

Creativity meets coffee and charm at Viktor
Vintage, secondhand, used, pre-loved, reused, recycled – this beloved concept goes by many names, and it blends beautifully with arts, crafts and Åland creativity.
Viktor Craft & Design on the pedestrian street in Mariehamn is a place to discover local creativity. Here you will find a nice mix of arts and crafts, design, second-hand and recycling along with other selected and beautiful things.
The shop is named after Viktor Eriksson, who built the first wooden house on the site at the turn of the century. Today, fashion designer Linda von Köhler, textile artisan Inger Nygård and precious metalsmith Annika Åkerfelt offer both their own brands and selected craft and design products in the cosy shop environment that feels like a cute little doll's house for adults.
HOME-BAKED IN THE CAFÉ
After shopping, coffee or lunch awaits in Viktor's equally cosy café. There's something for everyone, just sit down in the lounge and enjoy something sweet, salty or savoury. Pastry chef Johanna Karlsson and chef Peter Eklund always choose Åland ingredients whenever possible. Discover the sumptuous cake counter and the bistro menu that follows the seasons.
A GALLERY FOR ARTS AND CRAFTS
Upstair at Viktor's, the association Ålands
Slöjd & Konsthantverk runs its crafts gallery GALLERIET. In July, leather artisan and artist Saija Saarela is an invited exhibitor. You can find information about upcoming exhibitions at www.konsthantverk.ax. Also visit the new portal www.viligt.ax which presents Åland craftsmen.
Interest in second-hand goods continues to grow in Åland. To make it even easier to find treasures to love again, Emmaus has expanded its shop in Norrböle.
Previously, people mainly visited Norrböle to buy second-hand furniture and home furnishings. Back then there was only a small clothing section, but now it is as big as the city store on Strandgatan. In addition to clothes, the range also includes shoes, household goods, books, toys and much more. This makes Norrböle more than just a shop. Welcome to Åland's first reusable department store on 1000 square metres!
The new space was designed in collaboration with Eva-Jo Hancock, resulting in a cosy and playful atmosphere with details like a knitted tree and walls painted with egg oil tempera.
SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMUNITY
The extension is part of Emmaus' sustainability strategy, which aims to create more opportunities for reuse in Åland, especially of clothes. The vision is that everything Emmaus receives will be recycled locallyby 2030.
At the same time, Emmaus will be a place for social sustainability and a welcoming meeting spot where people can connect and take a break. The new store has more seating areas, making it easier to host events and workshops.
Don't forget to visit Emmaus City in Mariehamn and Emmaus Godby in the countryside – all three stores have their charm!
Åland has more than just shops selling clothes and souvenirs. Here, you’ll also discover unique finds, handmade ceramics, books rooted in Ålandic culture – and maybe even a sauna raft or a party-ready cooling trailer to rent for your next celebration.
A favourite bookshop with extra everything
Mariehamn Bookshop has something for everyone - from new books to stationery, postcards, maps and charts. Perfect for those looking for holiday reading, children's books, gift ideas, notebooks or Åland literature.
Need a refrigerated trailer and toilets for a party? Trailer for construction projects or boat transport? Machine hire? Or do you lack a wood-fired sauna or hot tub at your accommodation? At AX Rent you will find flexible solutions for all occasions.
In their workshop and farm shop, Siv and Simon Linney create beautiful and stylish pottery in harmonious colours. Everything from mugs, saucers and bowls to garlic pots, candlesticks and vases. As beautiful as it is useful.
Hire a sauna raft and treat yourself to an extraordinary sauna experience! Stay at the jetty or take a trip on the water and enjoy sauna baths, dips in the sea and cosy socialising in the lounge or on the roof terrace.
