Those simple facts are pretty much the backbone of her new touring comedy show. Mixing humor with songs from her newly released comedy CD ChoDependent, Margaret Cho again showed Seattle why she is the queen of comedy.

After an only average opening act, a svelte (and wellinked) Ms. Cho took the stage and captured her audience immediately. Unlike other female comedians popular with the Gay community, Ms. Cho’s act did not focus on celebrities and gossip, but on her own life and the seemingly bizarre relationships on which she has become dependent.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year is the homegrown Bumbershoot Music and Arts Festival at Seattle Center.

The lineup isn’t as fabulous as those of previous years (I’m still squealing over Beck’s appearance in 2008), but there are some worthy performers to check out during Labor Day weekend (September 4-6), such as rock icon Bob Dylan and soul pioneer Solomon Burke.

From the threeday roster, here are my picks for five great artists to see at Bumbershoot.

She suspects a 12-step program must be involved.

Mercy would circle through the other conversations, but whenever she came back to their corner, he was saying “yes” and she was saying “no.”

It turned out to involve holding hands at a very young age. It must have made more of an impact on him than on her.

Mercy was happy to be turned on to the songwriter, who drew a large enthusiastic crowd to Zoo Tunes, with his distinctive rough voice and songs. His band of Patrick O’Hearn on bass, Doug Rancis on guitar, and Kenneth Evans on drums, rocked out.

Hiatt opened with the upbeat “Drive South,” which got people up dancing. “Perfectly Good Guitar” was nicely pointed.

“Real Fine Love,” romanced the audience.

“Lift Up Every Stone” was one of Cuteness’ favorites with its lovely electric guitar solo.

“The Open Road,” continued the show with verve.

Cuteness told Mercy that John had gotten sober and changed the lyrics in upcoming song, “The Tiki Bar Is Open,” to: “I know drink ain’t no solution/ I ain’t had one in 17 years/ But if that Tiki bar were to close tonight/ I might just disappear.” Mercy liked

“Master of Disaster” also delighted. “Like a Freight Train,” followed with its bluesy bass solo. “Cry Love” picked up the pace again. Mercy liked the song “Just Like Your Dad Did,” with its lyrics about a 2-year-old child saying grace, “May the starving children be well/ But my brother’s hamster burn in hell.”

“Feels Like Rain” was slinky. “Slow Turning” earned Hiatt his first standing ovation.

“Tennessee Plates” earned his second. The crowd stood again for “Have a Little Faith in Me,” and once again for “Thing Called Love.”

With 40 years of recording and touring experience and 20 CDs behind them, Tower of Power is releasing a new album, The Great American Soulbook, which shows the band “Bump City-izing” many of their favorite soul songs, originally recorded by James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, and Otis Redding.

Well known in the ‘70s for tunes such as “What is Hip?” and “You’re Still a Young Man,” Tower of Power toured with Sly Stone and Credence Clearwater Revival, creating traffic jams when they started to headline their own shows. They performed on records with Neil Diamond, Smokey Robinson, Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, and Dionne Warwick, and influenced a generation of musicians.

Bizet’s Carmen gives tired opera another chance

by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer Very seldom does a performance come along that essentially re-writes the book for me about an opera I’ve seen too many times.

This DVD/BD of Bizet’s Carmen is just such an experience.

While Bizet’s music is a constant wonder of melodic invention and a delight to listen to, I don’t usually enjoy seeing this opera.

The story – while certainly dramatic – of Don José’s obsession with Carmen is not only a downer; it bores me. It is a sickness that is no more interesting than alcoholism.

But wait! What if the tenor agrees with me and can convince us that, from the moment Carmen’s flower hits him, he is truly infected with a madness he can’t escape? What if that tenor has eyes you want to swim in?

What if he makes you care so much that, for once, you suffer along with him every step of the way into his madness?

Such a tenor is Jonas Kaufmann! He’s sublimely sexy. He is totally convincing. And his singing could hardly be more exciting.

By the last scene, in which he stabs Carmen, he’s not just a jealous lover; he is a madman.

Never over-acting, Kaufmann takes us inside his character with an intimacy that is frightening. This is as far from boring as it gets!

Kaufmann is such a revelation that he alone would justify seeing this live show on this DVD/BD. But this is one of those rare miracles in which absolutely every element

is as close to perfection as you’ll ever find.

Both the sound and video are state-of-theart, and the camera work couldn’t be better.

Director Francesca Zambello not only gets totally committed acting from her principals; you’d swear every chorister and extra had had individual coaching and knew how to make the most out of it. There’s simply not a boring moment in this entire performance. Appropriate and imaginative ideas fill every scene.

Adding to the excitement is the lively, exhilarating conducting of Antonio Pappano.

Indeed, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) sounds fabulous in this great score.

Nor are we let down by our Escamillo. He enters on a stunning black stallion and sings his “Toreado Song” on horseback. Escamillo must be sexy, almost more than knowing how to sing, and Ildebrando D’Archangelo more than fills the bill. No slouch as an actor, he also sings up a fiery seduction of everyone in the room.

At the other end of the sexy spectrum is the simple country girl, and Jose’s intended girlfriend, Micaëla, sung here by the excellent Norah Amsellem. No less fine are all the smaller parts. There’s not a weak link anywhere.

And what of the Carmen? Anna Caterina Antonacci does not have the great flood of gorgeous sound we hear from Rise Stevens, nor is the voice as big and beautiful as Garanča’s (on this year’s Live in HD from the Met). But she sings extremely well with

the fine instrument she has, and no Carmen could look or act the part better. In short, she more than holds her own in this amazing show.

Celebrating 37 Years!

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Rufus Wainwright August 25 Paramount Theatre It’s rare to witness Rufus Wainwright struggle through a live performance – he’s a perfectionist and an immensely skilled musician who always delivers a flawless concert. But at the Paramount Theatre last week, the singer-songwriter faced a few challenges on the final date of his latest tour, having to pull himself together and finish the show on a somber yet triumphant note.

Wainwright began the night, which was split into two halves, by marching slowly, silently, and directly to a piano at center stage. The audience was asked to hold their applause until the completion of the first act, which was a run-through of all 12 tracks from his newest album All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu, played in continuity with barely a pause.

Dressed in a flamboyant black cape with feathers, glitter, and ruffles by designer Zaldy – the designer known for stitching together Lady GaGa’s outlandish outfits – Wainwright dazzled on several Lulu numbers, including the opening piece “Who Are You, New York?” and “Martha,” a song written about his own sister, who made an appearance later in the evening.

“The Dream” was rather intense, while “Zebulon” was uplifting. Overall, the show’s first half was odd and not as illuminating as I imagined it would be – the back-

ground images by visual artist Douglas Gordon, a series of blinking and crying pupils in microscopic view, was more of a distraction than an accompaniment to Wainwright’s acoustic piano and vocal execution. I appreciated the artistic bend that Wainwright was going for, though it was bizarre and unenticing.

After a 15-minute intermission, the second half of the concert started with Wainwright strolling out in an orange two-piece suit and playing “Beauty Mark” from his self-titled debut. Free to applaud and cheer to their hearts’ content, the crowd enthusiastically welcomed his more familiar work, which included a lovely rendition of “Grey Gardens” and stunning versions of a pair of standouts off Want Two, “This Love Affair” and “The Art Teacher.”

Younger sister Martha Wainwright, who supported Rufus as an opening act for this tour, reappeared for duets on a few songs, including a sensual cover of the Josephine Baker classic “Nuits de Miami” and another French gem, “Complainte de la Butte” (translation: complaint of the butt), spurring Wainwright to joke, “Which is common here in Seattle with all these hills.” Though not as startling as kd lang’s version, his rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” was beautiful and grand.

“This is the greatest tour I’ve ever been on,” exclaimed the older Wainwright to his sister, and thus began a gradual breakdown.

Seattle Center Mary J. Blige is the biggest reason to attend Bumbershoot, now celebrating its 40th year anniversary as Seattle’s premiere arts festival. While the overall lineup is below par compared to 2008 and 2009’s rosters – when Franz Ferdinand, Beck, Death Cab for Cutie, and Katy Perry thrilled mainstage audiences – you’ll still be treated to great performances this time by Neko Case, Angelique Kidjo, and local outfit The Moondoggies.

Smashing Pumpkins September 10 The Showbox SoDo If only a handful of rock bands mattered in the early ‘90s, Smashing Pumpkins – along with Nirvana and R.E.M. – would be among them. Billy Corgan is not a genius, but he is a compelling songwriter and vocalist, as both a solo artist and collaborative member of this Grammy-winning quartet. Can the group restore its one-time dominance in a new decade? Probably not, but that doesn’t erase the fact that they’re one of the most influential alternative acts ever.

“This was my mother’s favorite thing to see us do – sing together,” he said, weeping. His mother, folk singer Kate McGarrigle, passed away earlier this year, and combined with tour fatigue, this took its toll on Wainwright in the last segment of the program.

He battled through “Little Sister,” sniffling and trying his best to clear a stuffed-up nose, and he comically re-booted “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk” following a slight burp, or as he put it, “coughing up rice.” “Going to a Town” was riveting, and it received the biggest reaction from those who remained in the theater (some left after the first act).

By the time Wainwright got to a cover of “The Walking Song,” written by his mom, he was in tears and paused twice with his head down, sounding totally congested. But he pulled through, wrapping up the song and leaving the stage to thunderous cheers.

Rufus Wainwright has had better nights in Seattle, and he’s likely to return in the coming year with his self-composed opera Prima Donna. This performance was not a disaster by any means – the intimacy of the show and song selection were superb – but it didn’t represent what he’s truly capable of doing: blowing us away.

Bloody Machete goes back to the grindhouse

though it needs to use as many scenes from that fake trailer as possible, and save the majority of them for the absurdly silly climax.

But by then the thrill is sadly gone, and no amount of intestinal fluid or cranial trauma can change that fact.

Not that all of this can’t be fun. I enjoyed a great deal of the picture, especially during the wild and wooly first half when Machete is busting out of a hospital using a poor guy’s innards as a rope or when Michelle Rodriguez is using a raw egg as some sort of mystical medical device. I absolutely adored all of De Niro’s fake senatorial commercials which, considering the vitriol being unleashed during the currently raging political debates, aren’t nearly as far-fetched as we’d like them to be. Finally, any movie that can make me laugh and want to puke almost in the very same instant can’t be all bad, and if seen in a packed theatre with an audience receptive to that sort of thing, it’s almost impossible not to sit back and enjoy oneself.

Still, as nice as those statements are, at a certain point the whole thing devolves into nothing more than a mildly amusing, sometimes disgusting, an often too sadistic for its own good cacophony of noise. I grew tired of the film, no longer as captivated by the wily off-center whirligig as I was during the first couple of acts. By the time it was finished, I just didn’t care anymore, and while I can’t get worked up enough to throw anything close to a fit, that doesn’t mean I’m willing to give the film a pass, either. The bottom line is that Machete was borderline entertainment to begin with, and in the end the only work visa or green card I see this one getting is for early access into the DVD bargain bin at your local Best Buy. Machete Opening September 3 Three years after drug lord Torrez (Steven Seagal) kills his wife and child and then leaves him for dead, former Mexican Federale Machete (Danny Trejo) finds himself across the border in Texas trying to find work as a day laborer. But after Booth (Jeff Fahey) contracts him to kill incumbent anti-immigration State Senator McLaughlin (Robert De Niro) only to double-cross him, the one-time law enforcement officer wants vengeance, and the bloodstained trail leads back to the criminal who originally made him an outlaw.

I’m not really sure what there is to say about Robert Rodriguez’s (El Mariachi, Sin City, Spy Kids) latest B-movie creation Machete, other than to point out this is a schlock genre enterprise based on a fake trailer crafted for his and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 doublebill Grindhouse. If you were one of the people in the audience who cheered the sight of Danny Trejo soaring through the sky on a motorcycle equipped with a machine gun, then this is the movie for you. If you were not, or even if just the sound o f something like that makes your eyes roll and starts to turn your stomach, then it is not.

Simple as that. No more detail required.

And, of course, it is borderline awesome to watch 67-year-old Trejo continue to be a total badass, rip people’s throats out, and bed every 20-something (like Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez and, yes, Lindsay Lohan) If only that were true. Sadly, as this is re- that comes his way.

The Last Exorcism Now Playing Box office numbers turned into a horse race last week, with early reports claiming The Last Exorcism actually topped the deftly cast heist flick Takers. As the final numbers were tallied, Takers did edge out a win, but just barely.

Why is this a surprise? Takers is a slick, genre-specific movie with a multi-ethnic cast built to pull the dream demographic of 18- to 24-year-old males. You have hot black guys, hot white guys, and a handsome Latino for good measure. On top of all that, there’s an old guy (I still remember swooning over Matt Dillon in his tightywhities as he popped Kristy McNichol’s cherry in Little Darlings circa 1980) to bring in, well, other old guys.

The Last Exorcism, on the other hand, is a low-budget horror film with a genrebusting gimmick and a nameless cast. Seems like Takers should have been a slam dunk. That didn’t happen.

The Last Exorcism is almost a good movie. The setup isn’t revolutionary (a girl may or may not be possessed by a demon, and she may or may not have a couple of other secrets, too), but it keeps you guessing the entire time. Unfortunately, the early going feels a bit stretched and the last 15

cinematic device (think of the game-changer The Blair Witch Project), but in the hands of director Daniel Stamm the device becomes gimmicky.

A cinematic device is employed to tell a story, develop tension, create composition, and/or to somehow further the filmmaker’s vision. A gimmick is used to create cheap thrills designed to cash in on other folks’ real creativity. In this case, I suspect the filmmakers used it to save money.

Whatever the reason, it doesn’t work. Transition and establishing shots become narrative problems. The story arc is limited and watching can be physically dizzying. The camera as character may work in a short film or even a shorter feature film, but it’s tough to sustain for an hour and 40 minutes.

Perhaps the biggest problem with The Last Exorcism is the last 15 minutes. This should be the money shot with the possessed girl doing all sorts of disgusting stuff that we know will keep us up at night but that we just love watching anyhow.

Tony Bentley pulls off the best acting trick as the local clergyman with a small secret.

Eric Andrews-Katz: What started your interest in dancing?

Gary Wright: Basically, I started dancing when I was 10 years old. I was just at that age when I wanted to find something, and my mom worked at a dance school. I went to the class one Saturday and started dancing. I’ve never stopped.

Andrews-Katz: What different types of dance have you studied?

Wright: I’ve done all sorts, but my main type is ballroom – Latin American. I’ve studied ballet, jazz, and all the normal types as well. Latin American type is described as progressive ballroom dancing. Ballroom was once perceived as being prissy and formally elegant, but it’s more edgy and now it appeals to a younger audience as well. It’s become sexier.

Andrews-Katz: How old were you when you entered your first dance competition?

Burn The Floor September 14-19 Paramount Theatre For anyone who ever escaped watching Strictly Ballroom or So You Think You Can Dance, the Paramount Theatre has an answer: the stage production of Burn The Floor. This spectacular dance presentation has resurrected the ballroom style of dance competition that has not been seen in the United States since the 1920s. With a mixture of waltzes, foxtrots, and tangos, this hot and sensual show focuses on the Latin American dance and the passion for the art of dance. The cast also currently includes Anya Garnis, Pasha Kovalev, Ashleigh and Ryan DiLello – finalists in the So You Think You Can Dance program. In preparation for this “demonstración caliente,” the SGN interviewed another principal dancer, Gary Wright.

Wright: At the moment we have 14 dancers, two singers, and two percussionists.

Andrews-Katz: Which types of dances does Burn focus on and include?

Wright: The show includes Latin American, ballroom, salsa, swinger numbers with swing jazz, and a couple that recently joined does contemporary ballet, but mixes in Latin styles for a contemporary feel.

Andrews-Katz: Can you explain the difference of the American style of dance versus international style?

Wright: I would say it’s kind of all the same, but with Latin American ballroom dancing, it is done more competitively and taught widely. Some of the best teachers are in London. People travel from all over the world to London to learn, and then they bring it back to their native countries and put their own spin on it. Latin American dancing is constantly changing.

Andrews-Katz: Is there a story that connects the dances in Burn, or is the show more of a dance revue?

Wright: It’s a special show in its own right. A lot of shows have an actual storyline from a script. We don’t.

But from beginning to the end, we take you on a journey of Latin American and ballroom dancing. We try to reinvent Latin American ballroom by turning it upside-down and making it edgy. The show offers a variety of dancers so that the audience can identify with whomever and follow them throughout the show. This also allows a different perspective viewing at different times, depending on how the individual in the audience or Flo Burn the feels while they are watching. Andrews-Katz: Most people know ballroom dancing from the film Strictly Ballroom. How does the film compare to real competitions?

Wright: To me, the film is actually very cheesy. With some of its elements, it’s true; there are pushy dance partners and mothers do interfere. (My parents never did.) It’s kind of funny for me to watch. It’s a bit of a ballroom skit that exaggerates everything.

Real competitions are totally different.

Justin Lockwood’s sound design is a great support for the bare production, with outside sounds giving more life to the play.

The play’s short scenes don’t help to explain anything. We’re left with this enigmatic fantasy, where Bill learns to wear suits and somehow speak Italian after learning to speak English through poetically reciting phrases heard from others and from the ever-present radio.

It would have been nice to see Dora’s delight at Bill’s growing ability to manage the human world. Instead, in this production, Dora just seems too stunned to help and too

confused to know much about how to help Bill. So, the ending is not a fulfillment and a satisfaction, it’s almost a surprise.

Having said all that, part of what Artattack does well is choose plays that are edgy and somewhat challenging, focused on questioning society’s attitudes and asking us to think. Varla Jean Merman is a character originated and portrayed by Jeffery Roberson, an American actor, singer and drag performer.

Varla is easily one of drag’s most recognizable faces. SGN caught up with Varla to talk about her return to Seattle, live performances, and Fleet Enemas.

“I have only been to Seattle once a few years ago, and the audiences were amazing,” Varla told SGN. “At one of the shows, I saw a beautiful and stylish lady in the third row. Turns out, it was a young man who came dressed as me. How flattering!

So, I guess I now know how Cher and Carol Channing feel. It feels good, Seattle!”

Varla is always on. Throughout our interview, the drag superstar never missed a beat, making light of herself at every chance she could get. “I am going to premiere a new short film from my Don’t Eat Out, Varla Jean! series, as well as perform a mash-up of Lady Gaga’s ‘Telephone’ and Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’ in which I accompany myself on my very own iPhone,” joked Varla, adding, “I also will perform an explosive production number dedicated to my newest sponsor, Fleet Enemas.”

Varla’s style of entertainment could be described as shocking and self-deprecating comedy. When asked to describe her style to SGN readers, Varla quipped, “It might be easier for me to describe the theory of relativity – and I have no idea WTF that is. Let’s just say that some things are better left to be experienced, like a sunset or a Brazilian … and I’m not talking about a waxing!”

Weezer Sunday, 9:15 p.m.

Memorial Stadium It’s hard to believe “The Sweater Song” and “Buddy Holly” came out over 15 years ago, and I never would’ve guessed Weezer would still be around in 2010 – not to mention headlining the middle night of Bumbershoot. But the California rock band has managed to stay remarkably weird all this time, continuing its streak with unusually groovy numbers like last summer’s hit “Pork and Beans.” Weezer almost always plays their familiar stuff, so the kids will get their bang for their buck with “Hash Pipe,” “Beverly Hills,” and “Island in the Sun,” which should encourage a huge singalong. Oh, and the irrelevant Hole fronted by the annoying Courtney Love is opening the concert.

Mary J. Blige Monday, 9 p.m.

Although Varla has been on cable more time than can be counted, she maintains that performing for a live audience is a thrill. “I love to see the people’s eyes in the front row when my semi-celebrity saliva envelopes them in a cool mist, whilst my warm, dulcet tones curl up their ears like a friendly, purring pussycat.”

Over the years, Varla has appeared onstage and screen with a good many entertainers. Surely, over a career that has spanned two decades, memories have been made. “Performing at the Sydney Opera house was definitely a feather in the old wig cap,” Varla recalled. “But as a recent memory, my favorite was performing this summer in Provincetown one night, when a runaway wheelchair came careening down the aisle and took me out like a bowling pin.

Seriously.”

As you can gather, there’s no end to Varla’s wit. Memorial Stadium Headlining the entire festival – as she should be – is multi-Grammy winner and R&B veteran Mary J. Blige. Everything about this woman screams diva, which is why a large pool of Gay men will make the trek to Memorial Stadium to see her. After a last-minute show cancellation years ago at the Paramount Theatre, Blige owes us big time, and this means she better unpack the greatest hits trunk and perform “Family Affair,” “Real Love,” “Be Without You,” “No More Drama,” and “I’m Goin’ Down.” If we’re lucky, Blige might unleash her cover of U2’s “One” or Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart.” Hold onto your hats; this girl is going to belt it out of the ballpark! Arrive early to check out hip-hop sensation Drake.

The Moondoggies Monday, 5 p.m.

Mural Amphitheatre Forget about every other Seattle band on the festival lineup this year and focus solely on The Moondoggies, because they are on their way up, up, up. Their indie folk-rock sound may not be the most exciting to listen to on a hot afternoon, so you’ll have to grab some food and take a break on the lawn to let it sink in and really appreciate it. The local quartet, led by Kevin Murphy who interviewed with Seattle Gay News on August 27, will soon release their album Tidelands, and are expected to play several cuts from it (and possibly newly written material) at Mural Amphitheatre.

Angelique Kidjo Monday, 7:30 p.m.

Fisher Green The Grammy-winning artist, who interviewed with Seattle Gay News while touring with Josh Groban, returns to the Emerald City, having recently wowed thousands of soccer fans at the start of the 2010 World Cup. Born in Benin, she’s an explosive performer that infuses a variety of sounds from Afro-soul to Caribbean jazz to Brazilian samba, and her longtime devotion to combating AIDS in her home continent speaks of her true humanitarian spirit. “Seyin Djro,” the leadoff track from 2004’s Oyaya, is a testament to Kidjo’s fiery, sultry world music catalog, and at Bumbershoot you can expect sore feet after her electrifying performance.

Other performers to watch: Solomon Burke, Bob Dylan, Health, Justin Townes Earle and Vienna Teng.

It’s not only her delivery that makes her such a beloved comedian; it’s her facial expressions. The looks she gives are priceless, and her eyes are full of commentary. Thanks to the theater’s monitor screen, every person in attendance could see her expressions and enjoy the evening.

Ms. Cho sang several songs from her new comedy album. If you are wondering how her voice was, the answer is that it was not bad at all. Audiences accept the “non-singing” voice more readily, but Ms. Cho can carry a tune pretty darn well. She may not be Carrie Underwood, but she far surpasses Sandra Bernhard as a songstress.

Covering different musical genres from country ballads, love songs and rap, these ditties are light, entertaining, and funny.

The song “Your Dick,” for example, expresses her pure delight at her lover’s best attribute despite how quickly she loses interest in all of his others. The tune is breezy, but it’s catchier than a cold, and just like a cold, it will stay in your head for quite a while. And as you find yourself subconsciously softly singing along, she throws in the harmonizing lyric, “I love your balls, too” so innocently, it’s like a triangle sounding at the end of a classical concert. The CD Cho-Dependent actually features such guest stars as Ben Lee, Tommy Chong, Ani DiFranco, and Fiona Apple, among others, but sadly they were not at the concert.

Seattle was only the second stop for the Cho-Dependent tour. Always a supporter of the Queer community, groups were collecting for the legalization of Gay marriage in the lobby of the theater. LOGO, the GLBT cable network, sponsors the concert tour, the Cho-Dependent CD is currently available.

testants, the A/PI International Board of Directors have approached and secured two national talents to perform: Massive Monkey, a local b-boy dance crew from Randy Jackson Presents America’s Best Dance Crew on MTV, and Shanghai Pearl, Seattle’s only Asian burlesque entertainer.

“We couldn’t have a drag pageant without featuring two of Seattle’s best drag entertainers, the live vocal styling of cabaret singer Arnaldo! Drag Chanteuse, and the legendary Smokee as Cher!” Gaysha Starr told SGN. The pageant will be emceed by Teriyaki Temple, Shaka Kwan, and Gaysha Starr.

“Pageants like A/PI International are important as they provide an avenue to spotlight ‘the best of the best’ of the Asian Pacific Islander sector in the northwest LGBT community,” said Gaysha Starr. “The work that goes on behind the scenes of producing pageants, as well as running in one, creates strong community as teams of people come together striving to meet one shared goal. It can take up to four or more people to get one contestant ready, from costuming and talent production to general preparation.”

A/PI International dates back to 2001.

Teriyaki Temple and Collin Kwan (known in drag as Shaka Kwan) decided to create the pageant to promote awareness and instill empowerment and pride in the Pacific Northwest’s Gay Asian Pacific Islander community. “In 1998, Shaka Kwan and I moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington. We felt that Seattle’s Gay Asian scene lacked a sense of unity and pride. There were very few Gay Asians in the scene, let alone doing community service,” Teriyaki Temple told SGN. “Only a handful of Asians were doing the work that we as a community should have been doing.

Smokee, Gaysha Starr, Lola Maharlika, and Asia were the only ones out there carrying the weight of our community for so long.

was going strong and wondered why the Gay Asian Community didn’t have one. So, we came up with the Mr. And Miss Gay A/ PI Pageant.”

“As co-producers, Teriyaki and I have spent a minimum of 25 hours a week since mid-July preparing timelines, networking, producing fundraisers to pay for the actual event, as well as organizing the actual A/ PI council, securing sponsorship, and event planning,” said Gaysha Starr. “I think it’s important that our A/PI community have at least one big event to look forward to aside from Gay Pride where we can come together and be proud of who we are and what we stand for.”

“It’s funny, I only started doing drag because after my first stab at it, my friends told me not to quit my day job,” said Shaka Kwan. “That only fueled my fire to prove them wrong, and the rest is history. Drag has opened so many doors for me. It inspired me to become a community activist, performer, host, and to pursue my own business in graphic design. Without any of my involvement in the communit,y I would not be a fraction of the person I am today. I feel like I am part of a greater cause and my life has been enriched in a way that I never could have imagined because I pursued my dreams. I am grateful and blessed to have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people and learned so many life lessons and skills. I encourage everyone to do the same.”

“If drag hadn’t given me the confidence to speak out I wouldn’t have had many of the opportunities that I did,” Teriyaki Temple told SGN. “After being elected Miss Gay Seattle, the SGN gave me an opportunity to start covering events for the paper, which then started a love affair with journalism.

Drag gave me the opportunity to not only put together community events, but it gave me an opportunity to cover them and inform the public about what great work was being done in the community. After SGN, I went on to work for the national news magazine The Advocate as a contributor, and OutQ News on SIRIUS Satellite Radio as a correspondent. I recently left a job with the City of Seattle relating to Federal Compliance.

I’m currently I’m a field producer for CBS News and have started the process in pursing my Juris Doctorate Law Degree.”

Each year, A/PI International picks a beneficiary to give pageant proceeds to. This year’s beneficiary is the Washington state Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network (GLSEN). “The work that GLSEN does for our youth is so important,” said Gaysha Starr. “They provide the resources and support for LGBT students and the sensitivity training for educators that was lacking when I was in high school in the late ‘80s.

I still remember what it was like to walk down the halls in high school, before being Gay was in the mainstream, and being harassed and picked on and not having people like GLSEN to talk to in order to feel safe and understood.”

Since January of this year, “Gaysha Starr Presents,” along with the Seattle Gay News and Neighbours Nightclub, have helped to raise over $5,000 for GLSEN Washington through drag shows and pageants. “I think that every little bit helps,” Gaysha Starr continued, “We are increasing GLSEN’s visibility and, partnered with the financial support, we are helping to keep them focused on their work, rather than worrying about their funding.”

“We hope to provide an evening of pageantry and world-class entertainment while raising money for GLSEN and the A/PI Council,” Gaysha Starr concluded. “We promise to showcase our A/PI community in the best way possible.”
