Emmys boast tight Hedda Lettuce sure to be races, Gay emcee delicious at Julia’s

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer American television is at its zenith; never before have we had such a stellar collection of programs, both comedic and dramatic, to choose from. Simply put, if you aren’t watching TV, there’s something wrong with you. From Bayou vampires (True Blood) to schoolkids singing their hearts out (Glee), from polygamists in hiding (Big Love) to animated pottymouths (Family Guy), this is the best time to be a couch potato.

Sunday night’s Primetime Emmy

Awards (September 20, 8 p.m., CBS), hosted by openly Gay actor and nominee Neil Patrick Harris, will have its usual share of surprises and utter disappointments, yet the most important thing to note is that many of the nominees – thanks to the television academy’s expansion to six instead of five in each category – deserve to be there. Here are my picks for the most worthy in the outstanding series and acting fields.

Hedda Lettuce in EAT ME! September 24, 9 PM Julia’s on Broadway New York City’s premiere drag queen, Hedda Lettuce, is bringing her one-woman comedic tour de force, EAT ME!, to Julia’s on Broadway September 24. The show will be a first for the greenhaired, HX Magazine six-time Drag Queen of the Year Awardwinner.

“I’ve never been to Seattle,” Hedda Lettuce told SGN. “I am looking forward to getting high on your quality caffeine!”

The performer has received national acclaim for her characters, comedic satire, and original music.

EAT ME! is billed as devilish, delightful and delicious, with a side of “raunch” dressing. The show’s promoters say to expect the unexpected.

Hedda Lettuce told SGN she promises “non-stop hilarity and a bladder problem from all the laughing” for the audience. “My show EAT ME! has it all,” she said. “At Julia’s, you’re gonna get standup comedy, live singing, and great parody numbers. It is a bit naughty as well.”

Arthur Miller’s Creation done right at The Schmee

The Creation of the World and Other Business Theater Schmeater Through October 10 It’s a story as old as Adam and Eve. In fact, it is the story of Adam and Eve, and Satan/Lucifer, and God. The premise of Arthur Miller’s play, The Creation of the World and Other Business, now presenting at Theater Schmeater, is that there is more to the creation story than we know. Lucifer is trying really hard to help God out. God, however, thinks Lucifer is out on a power grab – that old “jealous God” thing, perhaps.

The play has been around for a while, but seldom has it been done as artfully and humorously. This is a completely “grownup” production. Those that the script calls out as naked are naked. Matthew Middleton as Adam is as innocent and childlike as can be. He doesn’t know he’s naked. Nor does Heather Roberts as Eve. Arthur Miller makes a credible argument for why see creation page 29

I checked out her video “My Botox Face” (a musical parody of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face”) and quickly saw why the Julia’s show is sure to be a hit: Hedda Lettuce is a laughout-loud comedic professional.

Celebrating 36 Years!

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer Bright Star Opening September 18 When I tried giving my own presentation of reading Robert Burns’ A Red, Red Rose, trying desperately to do an Irish accent in my junior year high school English class, I was met with giggles and some sneers. That put the kibosh on my first attempt to bring others into the warm bath that English literature was for me, and got me more threats of bullying from some of those same classmates.

Ah, but at the ripe age of 53 and a half, sitting with my 54-year-old sweetie (in drag, no less!) in a darkened theater with other critics – some of them maybe with similar geeky histories – watching Bright Star, I felt much vindicated. After all, I might have stopped trying to impress my classmates with my knowledge and love of English poetry, but I did not stop my voracious study of my favorites, the Romantics, including John Keats.

The movie is about Keats (Ben Whishaw), or rather his relationship with his young neighbor, a perky seamstress (sweetly beautiful Abby Cornish), his best friend Brawne (Paul Schneider), and the girl’s mom (Kerry Fox), who tries to stop their courtship.

Amid lush landscapes and to-die-for costumes from a much gentler age, Whishaw

and Cornish move from being skeptical of the girl’s ability to absorb the seriousness of Keats’ poetry to an almost obsessive adoration for each other. In the background are Keats’ friends and fellow poet/writers and young Fanny’s patient, but increasingly alarmed mother and two younger siblings, who often accompany her on sashays into idyllic forest meetings.

As Keats – a poor and malnourished weakling – becomes more and more ill from a journey to London (an attempt by best friend and mother to keep the two lovers apart) without proper weather gear, Fanny becomes more determined that they spend their lives together. Eventually, fate and his illness win, leaving young Fanny devastated after his death in Italy. He leaves his mother, siblings and friends to pick up the pieces of this doomed relationship.

Absolutely the most gloriously romantic film I’ve ever seen (and, no, I have to admit I didn’t see The Piano), this is why we all love director Jane Campion. Her sure vision guides this film in a stately, but accessible way that draws in the viewer and touches the heart so much I’d advise taking along a box of Kleenex, as you’re sure to need it – that is, unless poetry bored the hell out of you in school and gothic romance makes you roll your eyes.

Otherwise, grab a sweetie, or just a good friend, and see this sumptuous banquet of a film.

Old movie fans will remember The Mirror Crack’d as a 1980 theatrical feature starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Kim Novak and Angela Lansbury (as Miss Marple). This latest incarnation of the mystery – about murders on a movie set – could air in the UK before the end of 2009.

Xandir returns for the Drawn Together movie Since real reality-show celebs never seem to want to let go of their 15 minutes of fame, why should their animated counterparts be any different? Comedy Central has announced The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie!, a direct-to-DVD feature about politically incorrect cartoon characters liv-

ing in a Big Brother-style house. When one character notices they can now all curse without being bleeped, the cast realizes that the show has been canceled, leading them to fight to get back on the air. The series’ cast includes Gay actor Jack Plotnick (Girls Will Be Girls), who provides the voice of Xandir, a video-game prince who doesn’t seem quite ready to acknowledge he’s a homosexual, even though it’s painfully obvious to everyone else in both his universe and ours. The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie! will hit your Netflix queue in 2010.

Haynes and Winslet bring Mildred Pierce back to life One thing you can definitely say about visionary Gay filmmaker Todd Haynes is that he’s unpredictable, bouncing from the chillingly unsettling acclaimed ’90s drama Safe to the Douglas Sirk homage Far From Heaven to the Dylan biopic fantasia I’m Not There. Now he’s tackling an old-school Gay favorite, writing and directing an HBO miniseries of Mildred Pierce. The James M. Cain novel was indelibly brought to the screen in the 1940s with Joan Crawford in the lead role – it’s the movie that won Mommie Dearest her Oscar – and now Kate Winslet will play the striving greasy-spoon entrepreneur who’s brought down by a mean, ungrateful daughter. And it’s a safe bet that Haynes’ version will hew closer to the toohot-for-the-Hays-Code novel than the first film, so Romeo is counting the days until this new Mildred moves into the pop culture landscape.

Aniston sings behind bars in Goree Girls If Gay director Michael Sucsy could make Drew Barrymore sound exactly like “Little Edie” Beale in the acclaimed HBO movie Grey Gardens, then he can make Jennifer Aniston sound like she can sing. At

least that seems to be the idea behind The Goree Girls, which will star Aniston in the true-life story of female prison inmates who formed a country-western ensemble in the 1940s. Aniston will do her own singing for the film, and the one-time Friends star will also learn how to play the dobro (a resonator guitar). If Sucsy could get a passable “Tea for Two” out of Barrymore and Jessica Lange for Grey Gardens, he’ll no doubt elicit some sweet vocalizing from Aniston for The Goree Girls, warbling its way onto screens in 2010 – and, with a little luck, taking Faith Hill down a peg or two on the country charts.

Will Young joins Ab Fab star in new Agatha Christie mystery Singer Will Young became a megastar in the United Kingdom (and a cult fave among American Gays) as the first winner of that country’s American Idol-spawning Pop Idol. And while his coming out nabbed him even more headlines, it didn’t impact his pop career much. Next step was, of course, acting. (Because if Mariah can keep getting work in movies, anyone can, right?)

My One and Only Now Playing I wasn’t expecting much. My One and Only, directed by Brit Richard Loncraine (Wimbledon), sounded like a vanity pic produced by a D-list has-been with too much money and too many connections who is way too fascinated with his own story.

While I wasn’t totally off the mark, there are still some things to like with this melodramatic period piece set against the highway car culture of 1950s America.

The cars were lower, wider, and longer.

The interstate system was taking shape.

Rockets to outer space were on the verge of reality. America was in love with itself and its post-war prosperity. When you went to movies, or better yet, flicked on the television in your very own living room, all you saw was perfection. The perfect clothes, the perfect car, and nothing but happy endings all around. Too bad life couldn’t imitate the images.

That’s why I first fell in love with the beats. Kerouac and crew chipped away at the lovely veneer of 1950s America with pen and ink and an exhausted insistence on bearing witness to those characters not shown in prime-time advertisements.

And that’s why I love contemporary movies set in the ‘50s. It may be akin to shooting fish in a barrel, but I’m fascinated by modern attempts to capture the dissonance

between a ‘50s era Madison Avenue kitchen and the real thing on an anonymous street in an anonymous Springfield, US of A. I’m thinking of Todd Haynes’s lovely homage to Douglas Sirk, Far from Heaven, Stephen Daldry’s The Hours, and Sam Mendes’s Revolutionary Road.

Unshaken in that ‘50s sort of way, Anne buys a Cadillac Eldorado and scoops up her two sons George (Logan Lerman) and Robbie (Mark Rendall) from their ritzy private schools and their ritzy New York high-rise and heads out on the road to find a man who will make everything all right – again, in that ‘50s sort of way.

I still don’t get Renee Zelwegger. Every squinty-eyed chipmunk-cheeked poutylipped inch of her is a mystery to me. I think she might be okay here, but I find her so irritating that I’m not sure.

The supporting cast does good work with fun turns by Eric McCormack, Chris Noth, Steven Weber, and a scene-stealing David Koechner as one-note send-ups of suitors for Anne. Sure, the actors have little to work with, but all wade bravely into the roles as men who seem almost perfect, almost.

Molly C. Quinn steals a couple of scenes as the girl next door, and Bacon is great as usual as the father. It would have been nice to see a bit more of him.

While its 79-minute running time passes quickly, and while the admittedly somewhat cheesy finale broke my heart, the simple fact is that this movie impresses more as a technical achievement than it does 28 Seattle Gay News

One and Only ‘50s family melodrama a mixed bag

Boys Are), is the center of the story and the narrator. George loves Catcher in the Rye (argh!) and seems wise beyond his years, yet still has room to learn a couple of things.

Holden, where are you when we need you?

He tells the story knowing it won’t ring true because it’s all too fantastic, and yet he sells it anyway. Sometimes life does imitate art, or whatever this movie is.

George’s half-brother, Robbie (Rendall) is my favorite character. Rendall is perfect as the older sibling with a knack for needlepoint and an eye for color. He is unabashedly Queer, even a bit nelly, without once seeming cartoonish. The character is totally secure in his identity and supported at every turn by the immediate family. Sure, outsid-

ers can seem uncomfortable with him or employ the easiest epithet in anger, but the family knows who their boy is and seems unquestionably supportive.

My One and Only most certainly is a vanity pic produced by a D-list has-been (sorry, Mr. Hamilton) with too much money and too many connections who is way too fascinated with his own story. And who gets way too much sun, by the by. However, it’s also solid family melodrama (I don’t use that as a pejorative) with awesome costumes and period-perfect art direction that looks back to the ‘50s with a knowing wink, even if it takes itself a tad too seriously at times. If you like ‘50s era family melodrama, check it out.

as anything else.

Set in a world devastated by war, a group of strange, diminutive, hand-stitched creatures struggle to survive while under almost constant siege by horrific mechanical beings apparently bent on their annihilation. Given numbers instead of names, things begin to change when a newcomer, 9 (voiced by Elijah Wood), appears out of the wasteland looking to help.

Protected by the resilient and stalwart 2 (voiced by Martin Landau), befriended by the affable and good-humored 5 (voiced

by John C. Reilly) and feared by the Machiavellian and overprotective 1 (voiced by Christopher Plummer), 9 speaks his mind and shows a curiosity most of his companions lack. But discovering the truth comes with a heavy price, and after he accidentally awakens a monstrous, long-dormant machine apparently responsible for wiping out all of humanity, it falls to him to solve the riddles left by the creator and free the planet from its malevolent, soul-sucking presence.

9 begins magnificently. Acker’s early glimpses of the world created by him and his screenwriter Pamela Pettler (Monster House) is beyond spectacular. No detail is too insignificant, everything on the screen popping with an invigorating electricity that boggles the mind. The animators pull out all the stops, and the main character’s first clueless and questioning steps into this demolished netherworld of shrapnel and desolation are eerie and suspenseful.

Unfortunately, even though much of what happens next is well-staged and breathlessly exciting, the movie devolves into a series of seemingly endless confrontations and escapes which ultimately grow wearisome.

Characterization isn’t given the nurturing it deserves, and new heroes like 7 (voiced

by Jennifer Connelly) are so speedily introduced that they’re never given the opportunity to evolve and grow. While I appreciate the fact Acker wants to keep up the pace and not draw his scenes out any longer than necessary, the hows and whys are sadly disregarded in order for him to keep things racing along like an out-of-control rollercoaster.

Still, the level of creativity here is positively impressive, and some of the vocal work (most notably by Reilly and Plummer) so surpasses what’s in the script it elevates things to a level they’d never have gotten to otherwise. And while some of the action sequences can’t help but feel a bit repetitive, some of them (like an early battle between 2

and a cat-like creature or the group’s second act escape from a malicious flying machine) are so marvelous I almost didn’t want them to end.

I was also completely devastated by the emotional nuances of the climax. While a little maudlin and melodramatic, Acker nonetheless handles these penultimate scenes with an assured grace that hit me like an arrow to the heart. Even though I knew better, I almost couldn’t help but begin to cry, and by the time the film was over the amount of tears I shed felt like they could have filled an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Be all that as it may, the lack of character development and cohesive storytelling does hurt Acker’s debut quite a bit. This is a movie I find myself wanting to love and embrace, but thanks to these regrettable slipups, I just can’t do it. What I can do is say that 9 is a visual marvel filled with numerous delights, hinting at a budding greatness on the part of its creator to come. Like a rose struggling to bloom in the middle of a disaster zone, this is one animated spectacle where I find heavenly hope amidst the irritating chaos.

Celebrating 36 Years!

wild left turn in the second act where Ruhl gives a long monologue to the dead man and sends Jean to meet him in the halfway area that they end up in when they are dead. The play seems to be about who loves you, truly.

However, it doesn’t satisfy its own concept very well. By the end, we have found out why Gordon was staring at Jean just before he died. That doesn’t mean that Ruhl wraps it up very well.

However, whatever qualms you might have with the story, the production, directed

by Carol Roscoe, is first-rate. The actors are uniformly on their game. Dooly should get an award just for sitting and being dead for such a long time at the beginning of the play! Grogan is a lovely Jean, though it would have been nice to see even a little bit of remorse over lying at first, wouldn’t it? Jamieson and Gannon are hysterical as mother and stepdaughter, and milk the absurdity for all it’s worth. Gouran and Grogan make a very nice couple, and as they find out more about each other, they create a real test for love. Witt is more of an ensemble player, but she definitely has some great moments as Gordon’s mistress.

Ruhl’s play may be strange, but there are a lot of laughs on your way to confusion.

The technical support is good, as well, with a versatile and interesting, though plain, set

by Dan Schuy, sound by Robertson Witmer, lights by Josh Randall and costumes by Mandy Muller. It’s certainly a modern concept that has not yet been explored nearly enough, so kudos to Ruhl for playing with cell phones.

Dead Man’s Cell Phone ArtsWest Through October 3 Say that you’re sitting at a café and someone’s cell phone rings and he just won’t answer it. And it rings again. And again. And again. And you start asking him to please answer it. And he ignores you. So, finally, you get up to go get the phone and push the guy who won’t answer and he falls over, since he’s dead. This is the premise of the Sarah Ruhl play at ArtsWest, Dead Man’s Cell Phone.

Jean (Emily Grogan) answers the dead man’s phone and decides that she has been picked somehow to be its recipient. She believes she has fallen in love with him. She begins to tell those who answer that the dead man, Gordon (Mike Dooly), gave the phone to her and that he wanted her to have it. She begins to tell people of Gordon’s death, and finds herself making up Gordon’s last words about his lover (Kate Witt), his last words about his mother (Julie Jamieson), his last words about his brother, Dwight (Tim Gouran), and his last words about his wife, Hermia (Peggy Gannon). She finds a way to tell each one a lie that makes him or her feel better.

Jean does not appear to have qualms about telling these lies. She seems to enjoy herself and her power. Of course, the first lie is that Gordon gave her the cell phone, since he was dead at the time. After meeting Dwight and the rest of the family at the funeral, Jean falls in love with Dwight instead of Gordon.

Stage productions to enjoy this weekend

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer Leaves are falling and turning those colors I love to emulate with clothing and tights, and there’s that chill that tells even the most die-hard “summer’s not over yet” fan that, yes, my season is upon us. Don’t despair, Bunky; there’s also another episode of Seattle’s longest-running episodic theatre show, Sex In Seattle, set to burst onto the stage of Hugo House (1634 11th Avenue, off Pine Street) this weekend.

This episode finds the five spunky and sexy Asian-American women who have kept fans of SIS captivated for over five seasons since the kickoff show in the mid-‘90s, dealing with more relationship issues and life’s big questions. Will Kenneth and Elizabeth get back together, or will Elizabeth stay with the Chinese guy she married and then ran away from a couple of episodes ago?

Will Jenna pick Adam or will she pick Colin, and will Tess ever find true love outside of her own bed and with a person instead of her sex toy? And what about the vixen of the show? Will she get what she wants, and who will be hurt or not hurt in the process?

And, trust me, there are more things going on even than what I’ve just written.

How can you get in on the fun? Why, by showing up for the gala opening of Sex In Seattle: Coming Clean on September 18 and getting the chance to be brought up to speed via fast flashbacks before the newest episode opens. Also, there’s always a raffle for fun prizes at the beginning, and lots of laughs to be had watching these lovely ladies and their various entanglements play out over the course of an evening. Confusing Cell Phone still brings the laughs

Still need a reason to go out and enjoy the crisp, almost-fall evenings we’re now having (besides imbibing brews at Oktoberfest in Fremont, of course)? Then you could also reconnoiter with some friends at the newest installment of Seattle’s other long-running variety show, Pork Filled Players, in their current, funny production, Pork To the Future.

This show kicks off on Saturday, the 19, at Odd Duck Studio, (1214 10th Avenue) at 8 p.m. And trust someone who’s seen these folks at work; this is hella funny stuff and so worth the ticket price.

So grab a date or a bunch of friends and plunk your behind in a chair at Odd Duck Studio (one of Capitol Hill’s newest small theatre houses), and sit back to enjoy an evening of shenanigans and timely humor by some of Seattle’s best comedy actors.

Emily Grogan and Mike Dooly in Dead Man’s Cell Phone

God is played with gravity and jealousy

by James Weidman. God has three (underused) angels: Raphael (Lisa Branham), Azrael (Deneice Bleha) and Chemuel (Amelia Meckler). They have some funny moments, but almost aren’t needed in the play at all, even at the end – maybe especially at the end. All three actresses do what they can with the roles.

Anthony Duckett as Cain and Natural Israel as Abel don’t come in till the second half, but Duckett is heart-rending as Cain when he is caught in a fever of anger and kills his brother. The play takes a turn toward drama at that point, so successfully that the audience held its breath at the end, afraid to break the moment by clapping.

J.D. Lloyd directs a long script with great timing and great humor. The lush set by Steve Cooper is rather amazing. The Schmee does not have a huge budget, but they come

up with some real doozies in their set design.

Middleton and Roberts have full characters right from the beginning and grow into an old married couple with realistic emotional weight. Roberts, in particular, has great comic timing. Both of them are very nice to watch (yes, that does have two meanings).

The heart of the play is Lucifer, played with conviction by Alexander Samuels.

Samuels justifies every move his character makes. Lucifer’s thought process is right there on Samuels’ face. Samuels makes you feel sorry for Lucifer and God’s insistence on only seeing his bad side. He makes Lu-

John quiets his inner ethics advisor with thoughts of “everyone else is doing it” and “this is how it’s done,” even though he knows forgery is a crime. He’s reassured by several corporate sleazeballs that he’s doing the right thing. Then the money gets really good, and that justifies his conduct.

Bell takes us through the crash of the housing market and up to 2009. While the beginning of his presentation is like a pep rally and funny and true-to-life, later on in this short program, the meltdown gets a bit serious. House loans that John sells are ready to be foreclosed on and John feels responsible.

It’s nice that there is an ethical loan officer, but that may be the least true-to-life part of the evening. How many loan officers would track and phone some of their prior clients to try to help them?

Bell is a likable fellow and handles the techniques of changing characters well, though he’s still learning. Gin Hammond, his director and an expert at the form, has helped him individualize the physical characteristics of each. He can only get better at it, in time. While he only has two more performances Friday and Saturday nights (for a total of four performances all together), he will perform for three more nights during Free Theater Week in mid-October at the Odd Duck Theatre. So, you can still plan to see the show.

It’s an exciting ride from beginning to end and you can’t help but learn about the business and some of why those toxic loans brought our economy down. Inside the Heart of the Mortgage Meltdown VoxBox, 1205 Pike Through September 19 A former subprime loan officer and past and current actor, Norman Bell wants to help you understand how this economic meltdown happened. To do that, he’s created a one-man show where he demonstrates the rah-rah attitude of the mortgage-makers, and even the underhanded tactics that include forging someone’s name on paperwork and “stating” someone’s salary as four and five times their real salary.

Bell has created a bang-up experience, turning the whole audience into junior loan officers and giving pep talks. He explains how loans work by graphics of Larry the Loan and Ivan the Investment Banker. He exhorts us to strive to become loan officers (dropping that awful junior). And he shows us exactly how to do it by becoming a trainee being shown the works.

His story starts in 2005, with John Bartlett “shadowing” a loan officer and being shown how to follow and collect leads. At first, his phone calls are all hang-ups, abuse for calling the number for the 17th time (the company’s fault), and other failures. Soon he figures out how to sell loans and his fortunes start to change. Bartlett is motivated by wanting to help his sick father pay his medical bills, so he swallows his trepidation and moral unease and keeps moving forward, using the same techniques he has been shown. These include asking people what they dream about and then having them dream with him about how it could be.

Jennings: I’m not sure what it means – I kept hearing the title in my head as I was recording it. I think it symbolizes the instinctual stuff in all of us that’s just there, the human instinct towards love but also towards violence and desire, all wrapped up together.

Rodriguez: When you write songs about relationships, can anyone inject themselves into them or are they mostly written from a man’s perspective on a woman?

Jennings: I try to keep it open. For me, it’s more important to have it be open. My relationship songs try to be honest, but also truly loving towards each other.

Rodriguez: Are you constantly writing music, like in the shower or on the tour bus?

Jennings: For me, it’s more like a burst – three months worth of writing, and then a break. I try to expand my consciousness and grow as a person, so that every new burst sounds different from the last.

Rodriguez: From your previous tour stops, what do you remember about Seattle?

Jennings: The fish market. We always try to stay downtown or walk around down there; it’s so beautiful. I feel at home there – it’s a real similar feeling for me, like Minnesota. I always tell people that it’s the prettiest city in the country when it’s sunny.

Rodriguez: Are there any cities you must play on every tour, any personal favorites?

Jennings: Um, there are many of them.

Seattle, for sure – that’s a place I love. That was the first city outside of Minneapolis that people really came down to the shows, and the people in the press wrote about me for the first time there. That was the first city where my shows would sell out, so there’s a special place in my heart for Seattle.

Rodriguez: Do you remember the first concert you ever went to?

Jennings: Bon Jovi, at an arena in Pittsburgh. I remember Bon Jovi was shooting the video that night for “Wanted Dead or Alive.”

Rodriguez: Who’s your favorite living music diva?

Jennings: It would probably be Madonna for me. I love Madonna still.

Rodriguez: What’s the last item you downloaded onto your MP3 player or purchased?

Jennings: Animal Collective, I think. I might pick up the Grizzly Bear record today too because I’ve been hearing that on the radio and really like it.

Rodriguez: Have you ever had a wardrobe malfunction onstage?

Jennings: [Laughs.] Yeah, I split my pants one time. They were maroon pants and right as I was walking out, it was like “rip!” so I didn’t move.

Rodriguez: Do you have any advice for musicians just starting out?

Jennings: It’s important to try to work locally first. If you can sell out a show in your hometown, you’ll attract the attention of the press and more people. You really need to be able to do that at a local level before you try to step out on tour and extend yourself.

Rodriguez: Since you spend a considerable amount of time on a tour bus, are there any TV shows you’re addicted to and watch on the road?

Jennings: I love True Blood, surprisingly with the Blood record. I also like Bill Maher’s show on HBO. Rodriguez: Will you teach your sons about life and culture through your experiences, or will you let them learn on their own? As a Gay and Hispanic person, I look to you as a parent of the future generation to teach them that being different in this world is okay.

Jennings: That will just happen naturally, from being around me. It’s important to let them love whatever they love, people or places or things, so whatever sparks that joy in them, I support that, because what I love in my life came naturally to me, and my family was supportive. I dropped out of high school and followed my path. I think if you’re following what you love, everything works out. That might be idealistic, but I really think it’s true.

Sweet Dreams Mercy and Cuteness particularly enjoyed the 77th birthday tribute to Patsy Cline at the Triple Door because they are enthusiasts for her music.

Star Anna and her Band of Laughing Dogs opened with a nice rendition of “Strange.”

Her “Two Cigarettes in an Ashtray” showed off her nice big, round voice. Her “Stop the World and Let Me Get Off” also featured strong guitar work. She did “I Was So Wrong for So Long” with a nice lightness.

Tall Rachel Flotard’s rich voice showed well in “San Antonio Rose.” She made us laugh with her line, “Come on, haven’t you ever seen a drag queen before?” Her interpretations of “You’re Stronger Than Me” and “Lovesick Blues” and “Why Can’t He Be You” were pleasing. She was celebrating the release of her band Visqueen’s new CD. Kristen Ward then took the stage, singing “South of the Border” with her big, out-ofthe-box voice. She made us laugh when she said “Your Cheating Heart” was dedicated to every man she ever dated. Her performance of “I Fall to Pieces” was heartbreaking. Because she is from Louisville, she resonated with “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” She ended with a nice smile of satisfaction.

Kim Virant knocked the ball out of the court with her “Walking After Midnight.”

Her lush voice was also pleasing in “If You’ve Got Leaving On Your Mind,” “Back in Baby’s Arms,” and “She’s Got You.” Victoria Weimer Contreras wound up the

evening with luscious renditions of “Got a Lot of Rhythm In My Soul,” “Crazy,” and “Sweet Dreams.” She told a touching story about how the first time she heard Patsy Cline sing, it changed her understanding of how much a singer can communicate with her music. Her performance was true to that.

Cuteness wondered how they decided which singer got to sing which Patsy Cline song, since some would have been more desirable to sing. Mercy thought maybe they had a lottery. Cuteness said, “Fortunately, she had a lot of good songs.”

Brubeck introduced Bill Smith, who lives in Seattle and has played clarinet with Brubeck over the decades. The two did a breathtaking duet of “You Go To My Head.” The evening ended with all five taking out all the stops with “Take Five.”

The standing ovation went on and on.

Brubeck has just been justifiably recognized with the Kennedy Center Award.

Imagination Theater Mercy and Cuteness went to see a taping of two Imagination Theater radio dramas that will play on KIXI soon.

There is a tradition of taping some of these at the Kirkland Performance Center (KPC), so the audience can have the fun of watching radio created, sound effects and all. The first half was an episode of the ongoing Harry Niles series, set in Seattle, and with enjoyable detective dialogue. The title was Trouble Is My Beeswax. The second half was an adaptation of a Sherlock Holmes story, The Lion’s Mane. M.J. Elliot’s scripts for both were apt.

Cuteness thought John Patrick Lowrie, who directed and played Sherlock Holmes, was well-cast with his deep voice. Larry Albert’s performance as Harry Niles was also well done. Rachel Glass did two noir roles well. Nicola Pearson’s nice English accent suited the role of Maud well. Lee Paasch was fun as Sherlock Holmes’ maid, as was Pat French as Harry Niles’ secretary. Terry Edward Moore and Dennis Bateman played a variety of roles convincingly. It was most fun to watch the sound effects created and listen to the byplay among the actors.

The “new time” radio dramas air on KIXI, Saturday and Sunday evenings at 8:00 p.m., with encore broadcasts Tuesdays and Thursdays at the same time. There will be another taping at KPC on November 23. Mercy would like you to check it out.

The toughest race of the night, and it could literally go to any of these six veteran actresses.
