Getting away for a bit of romance is as simple as a 10-minute cab ride, or a four-hour train trip, from your doorstep.

Woodmark Hotel: The perfect staycation

Ever just need a breather, even if it’s only for the afternoon or just a romantic overnighter? Then the Woodmark Hotel may be just what you’re looking for as a nearby escape. Located at Carillon Point in Kirkland, this beautiful property goes up to the shores of Lake Washington and offers breathtaking scenery, where the worries of Seattle are kept at a distance.

For different looks at the city landscape, go on a boat tour of Lake Washington – the hotel concierge can arrange everything for you. Rob Renshaw captains the Watermark II, a 1956 wooden Chris Craft that will take you out on the water for a tour of two hours or more. The maximum of eight passengers allows for a more personal experience. Going from Lake Washington to Lake Union, Captain Renshaw passes facts and interesting information to passengers without burdening them with overabundant chatter. He knows what to point out and when to let the beauty of nature speak for itself.

Lakeside activities are abundant as well.

Kayak rentals can be arranged through the hotel’s concierge. Yoga classes are given on the lawns when weather permits, and inside when it doesn’t. Being an extremely dog-friendly hotel (Woody, the Labradoodle mascot, resides at the front desk and also handles the complaint department), the Woodmark offers “Yappie Hour,” a Wednesday event (May - September, 5-7 p.m.) serving dog treats and cocktails for canines and their friends alike.

If an overnight getaway is in the cards, then dinner can be the start of a magical evening. The BIN on the Lake restaurant is only one of two dining choices – the other being the delightful Beach Café – both located within the hotel property. Most tables, if not all, have incredible views overlooking the water, making sunset a true visual experience. The BIN on the Lake restaurant team, from the host to the busers, all have vast knowledge of the menu, and the servers can easily suggest wonderful pairings of food and wine. Whether you’re a seafood

fanatic or a landlubber, there are several choices to satisfy the palate. Just one example of the unique menu is the appetizer of the BIN pressed pork. Seasoned lightly with fennel and an apple cider glaze that gave a sweetened crunch to the outside, this had a strong but not an overpowering flavor. Usually the garnish is of little notice, but this came with red grapes and watercress, which – at the suggestion of the server – when eaten together with the pork, transformed a food contrast into a delicious gastronomic delight.

After dinner, enjoy a walk around the waterfront property, watching the lights flicker and reflect from Lake Washington’s surface, or simply retire to your room. Rates range from $185-$325, depending on type of room and season. Room sights vary from standard guest rooms to partial and, of course, full waterfront views. Rooms include complimentary high-speed WiFi, a flatscreen television, and spacious bathrooms equipped

with blissful “rain-style” showerheads.

All guests are invited to partake in the nightly “Raid the Pantry” event, where guests are invited to have late-evening munchies in the hotel lobby. These dishes include sandwiches, chips, desserts, juices, and sometimes soups to satisfy a late evening snack attack.

If you simply cannot be away from work, then the hotel offers other amenities as well. The business center is equipped with two computer and fax stations. They can host events from business meetings to lavish weddings and everything in between. While you are checking up on the office, the rest of your party can enjoy themselves at the downstairs library, complete with working fireplace and selfservice complimentary lemon-water stations. And when the business is concluded or the wedding planning is finished, there is no way better to reward yourself than with a relaxing massage. Conveniently, a spa is located on the premises, making a further escape an easy option.

The Woodmark Hotel has been a trendsetter for over 20 years. Being the first luxury hotel to establish itself on the banks of Lake Washington, the hotel allows for a leisurely escape from Seattle. Kirkland is only a 20-minute drive from Seattle, making a visit to the Woodmark Hotel less of a trip and definitely more of a vacation.

I recently took a week to do the trek myself and ended up spending most of my time in Monterey, California. Located on Monterey Bay, Monterey is a city of artists and fisherman that was immortalized

by American author John Steinbeck in his novels Cannery Row, East of Eden, Tortilla Flat, and Of Mice and Men. However Monterey is nearly 1,000 miles south of Seattle, and I made a point to stretch my legs at a few gems on the way.

My first stop: Ashland, Oregon, home of the world-renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

ASHLAND, OREGON Not a day goes by in this cute town of about 20,000 when a play isn’t running.

Ashland, voted #2 in the “Best Small Art Towns in America,” has over 20 galleries and four local theaters, in addition to the famous festival. Ashland is also the home of Southern Oregon University, a small state school of about 4,000.

This city’s downtown strip is the perfect place to park the car and simply explore.

Nothing else in the city tops seeing a play, hitting some pubs for some microbrews, and enjoying one of the many fine restaurants.

The restaurant I chose was Taj (31 Water St., just off the downtown strip), the only Indian restaurant I could find. Taj features authentic Indian cuisine and a larger Indian beer selection than any Indian restaurant I’ve ever been to – and I’ve been to a lot.

As with many historic hotels (the Ashland Springs was built in 1925), the rooms are very, very small (like half the size of your on-Broadway studio), and even if you upgrade, they don’t get much bigger.

All the other basic travelers’ lodges are there, too, and it’s still very easy to experience this charming town without staying in its signature hotel.

The Castro is calling you, and there are plenty of places to stay, but after three visits to San Fran, I think I found the best one.

The Parker Guest House in San Francisco has a very different feel than your average Gay place to stay. This 21-room bed and breakfast is small and welcoming and has a very relaxing garden and sauna.

Gay-owned and resting right on the border of the Castro and Mission districts, the Parker Guest House actually feels like a home away from home – I’ve never had a hotel experience like the Parker Guest House before.

Rates vary from $119-$229 a night.

The only thing to note about this place is that if you’re a light sleeper, make sure you request a room

towards the back of their two houses, as the streetcar runs right outside the front.

The tacky travel destinations in San Francisco are really quite a great way to nurse a hangover (trust me) after a night at the café. So go to San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf and taste the saltwater taffy, and then try to decide which taffy is better when you get to Monterey’s historic Fisherman’s Wharf.

MONTEREY, CALIFORNIA The Monterey area is simply a dream come true. I was lucky enough to get the local’s experience in Monterey, as it’s the home to many of my future in-laws.

In addition to some of the best wine-tasting the West Coast has to offer, Monterey features Cannery Row, the renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, and many historic buildings that make Steinbeck’s works come alive.

Every summer, seals flock in abundance to Monterey Bay and lie in the sun and sing all day long. They aren’t afraid of people and they’ll sleep on the sand literally feet away from you.

Right on Cannery Row, A Taste of Monterey is the perfect place for a tourist to sample from the local vintners. A Taste of Monterey is the only wine-tasting establishment seated over the water. Taking in the view of the Pacific Ocean while you sample wines with a friend or lover will be one of the most memorable moments of your trip to Monterey County.

The beauty of the area isn’t limited to just Monterey. Just south of Monterey is Carmel-by-the-Sea and Big Sur. Carmel is where celebrities come to get away and shop. It boasts a wealthy downtown shopping district. It’s the perfect place to get the star treatment while you’re star-spotting.

There are plenty of places to stay right on Cannery Row that offer views in their more expensive rooms, but for the most spectacular place to stay, you have to go a little bit south of Carmel to the Highlands Inn. Located seven miles south of Monterey, this four-star hotel owned and operated by Hyatt is simply stunning. This resort is half inn, half timeshare.

Most of the rooms offer wood-burning fireplaces, large spa bathtubs, HDTVs, room service, WiFi, and a full kitchen – all standard.

Not only can the concierge assist you with your free bike rentals, they can also arrange an in-room massage for you.

The Highlands Inn offers three spas and a heated pool. Its large lounges, restaurants, and bars offer spectacular views of Point Lobos, and feature cycling art collections throughout the year.

There are many other wonderful cities worth stopping in when you’re traveling on or near the coast, such as Portland, Oregon and Humboldt County, California.

For those of you living on the West Coast who haven’t driven the coastline, make a point of it. These places hold unique bits of beauty you’ll never forget.

The hotel was a hub for major media and athletes visiting Vancouver during the Winter Olympics, and with its breathtaking views and proximity to just about everything, it’s easy to see why. Our deluxe guest suite looked over the water, with a view of the now-dimmed Olympic rings still plainly visible in the harbor. By day, you can be pampered; by night, the vibrant Gaslight District and all of downtown are just blocks away on foot. The hotel is also an ideal stopover for a cruise to and from Alaska, as it’s virtually connected to the cruise ship terminal, as well as the futuristic convention center.

For weddings, anniversaries, or special events, there’s a vast array of options, such as the breathtaking Crystal Pavilion Ballroom, which was being prepared for an elaborate wedding reception during our stay. Various other luxurious banquet rooms are easily converted to suit a celebration or event of any size. The restaurants and lounges connected to the Pan Pacific will graciously help you coordinate any kind of surprise party or reception, no matter the specifics, with the hotel’s staff.

Though the hotel is large, boasting over 500 rooms with majestic views, all rooms feature luxurious personal touches alongside all the business amenities you could ask for. Room service is delivered by the friendliest staff I’ve ever encountered, laying out a tablecloth and breakfast at your very own four-person dining table (the egg white omelets are made to order and absolutely delicious). There are also two restaurants on the facility – Five Sails (detailed below) and Café Pacifica – as well as the Cascades Lounge.

Guests are encouraged to enjoy a stateof-the-art fitness club and heated pool with Jacuzzi and sun deck. The bedrooms offer huge king-sized beds you can easily get lost in, with a bevy of feather pillows and down duvets. Baskets bursting with Aveda products fill both bathrooms (yes, our suite had two), and a Jacuzzi tub and plush bathrobe are tempting enough to keep you inside, curled up with your sweetie in front of one of the flat-panel TVs (one in the living area, one in the bedroom). The mood of the Pan Pacific Vancouver is modern opulence, making it easy to feel like you and your sweetie are the only two people on earth.

WHERE TO EAT IN VANCOUVER Five Sails www.fivesails.ca Gerry Sayers – formerly the Pan Pacific Hotel’s catering director – and her husband, chef Ernst Dorfler, launched the Five Sails in May 2007 with a loving hand and years of five-star fine dining experience between them. Though not associated with the hotel, the elegant restaurant is housed in the same enclave at Canada Place and overlooks Vancouver’s inner harbor, Stanley Park, and a breathtaking view of the city and mountains. Their first special event upon opening was an elegant Gay wedding reception, and it’s easy to see why, when taking in the view of the five modern white sails in the harbor and the twinkling lights of North Vancouver in the distance. If you’re celebrating a special event or anniversary, it’s a memorable location, and guests can stay just a few steps away at the neighboring hotel. The menu, though pricey, is money well spent, and from time to time there are seasonal samplers that are affordable without much of a stretch. Start off with crab cakes or delectable risotto and a bottle of Canadian wine, and try the pan-seared halibut brushed with herbs and citrus greens with asparagus. If you’re not a seafood fan, there are plenty of other options, and chef Dorfler is more than happy to customize. The handmade spinach, herb, and ricotta ravioli was to die for. For a sweet ending, the smooth chocolate parfait with mango is outstanding.

Medina Café www.medinacafe.com The Medina Café is a unique, tiny bistro where the wait staff and patrons are chic and beautiful, and the menu is a glimpse into French café culture at its best. For brunch, Omlette du Matin is served up any way you like it in a tiny personal pan, and the Belgian waffles are dripping with your choice of topping and syrup (I suggest the fig orange marmalade). Cassoulet, a variety of sides, and a connoisseur’s selection of coffee options will get you warmed up for a day of exploring Vancouver. The Café is tiny and the atmosphere leisurely (diners enjoy chatting over coffee and staying a while), so get there early to soak up some sophisticated scenery

WHERE TO DRINK IN VANCOUVER Chambar www.chambar.com Chambar’s philosophy encourages you to “leave your day at the door and indulge in civilized debauchery.” Though well-known for dinner, many hip locals enjoy having drinks at Chambar (which is neighbor to Café Medina in Gastown), so we decided to drop in for drinks before heading out on the town. Beautiful exposed beams and sloped ceilings behind the bar paired with low, warm lighting, and either stools or plush sofas set the mood for a warm-up drink. As the menu is Belgian, Chambar offers a stellar selection of Belgian beers. If cocktails are more up your alley, try a specialty concoction to toy with your senses such as the Mûres Sauvages with blackberry, vanilla and gin or a Harmony, which is Canadian whiskey and lillet stirred with agave nectar and bitters. There’s nothing on the cocktail menu that will disappoint, and there’s plenty of eye candy to take in before going out.

Definitely a place to see and be seen while letting your inhibitions down just a little.

The classic Art Deco building holds approximately 1,000 people in the main ballroom, plus four additional bars, and over the years everyone from Tina Turner to Weezer has played here. More recently, hot up-and-coming bands like The Morning Benders, The Gossip, and The xx played the Commodore. The stage is easily viewable anywhere in the house, and tables are also available if you don’t feel like standing and prefer to people-watch. On the off night we stopped in, a local showcase had finished, and so a bit of dancing was in order. There’s plenty of room to cut some rug, as well as a great sound system and multiple

The spa suite was private and lived up to its reputation of excellence. It was hard to imagine that any other customers or rooms existed; the attention to detail and atmosphere of personal care was so complete. After our services were complete, we lounged for an hour in our warm, dimly lit room and left feeling kneaded and perfumed into absolute bliss.

For an experience this grandiose, the prices were quite reasonable compared to the Spa Utopia’s American counterparts. Package costs vary depending on add-on services; just call ahead to inquire or your host will be happy to help upon arrival or during your stay.

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer You already know that Portland is three hours away by car or train (www.amtrak.com), and that its comparably smaller size makes it very easy to get around in, and that its open and carefree vibe allows it to be one of the Gay-friendliest cities of either U.S. coast. What you might not know about this urban Northwest destination is that it has some of the best food anywhere – New York chefs, travel TV shows, and foodies from all corners of the country arrive in Portland to feast on everything from seafood specialties to wildly decorated doughnuts to cheap food cart meals. Eating was at the top of my list when I visited the Rose City a few months back, and while I returned with 10 new pounds, I was also fully satisfied. On your next journey to Portland, let food be the focal point of your trip.

STAY Hotel Lucia www.hotellucia.com A 10-minute walk from Union Station and feet from the Rose City’s downtown shopping center is Hotel Lucia, a favorite of rock bands and hip business travelers.

Its chic lobby, furnished with leather armchairs, fireplace and fluffy pillows, is the starting point to a fabulous overnight stay. The usual comforts – cozy beds, flatscreen TVs, dressers, coffeemakers, work desks – appear in each room, but unique to Hotel Lucia is its pillow and spirtitual menus – guests can choose the firmness or softness of their pillows from a varied list, just as they can select their choice of reading material, from a King James Bible to the Koran. But as in all parts of town, good restaurants are not hard to come across – case in point: Cafe Castagna. The more casual of sister establishments – Castagna, a fancier dinner-only restaurant is next door – this charming bistro has a burger on its lunch roster that merits an $11 price tag. Though the other actors (Bobby Temple as Gus, Kris Mainz as Wanda, Dylan Zucati as Jimmy, and Gerard Gravellese and Sean Marlow as assorted other characters) do solid work at presenting what they’re given, the story of Jimmy and Gus ends up soap-operaish and over-thetop, and also ends up avoiding a huge a ut o b iog r a p h ical element: Eric Lane Barnes is (contentedly, one should surmise) homosexual and in a committed Gay relationship as an adult. Yet, this life-changing aspect is nowhere to be dealt with in Gus’ religious conversion, nor with his relationship with his mother, nor with his relationship with God. So, what we’re to understand is the point is not at all clear.

Seven Deadly Sins: SLOTH dance party September 18 Neumos The next sin is here. On Saturday, September 18, Neumos is hosting SLOTH, the fourth dance night of the Seven Deadly Sins party series created by Two Knights Events.

“Guests can expect a high-energy musical journey that will keep them on the dance floor all night,” said George Delmar of Two Knights. “We opted for an Arabian Nights kind of feel – sort of like a lush harem with drapes, pillows, and such.”

The producers of SLOTH have brought in internationally renowned DJ Joe Gauthreaux.

“He has spun some of the largest and most popular and highly attended parties in the nation and beyond, including White Party Palm Springs, Black and Blue Party Montreal, the Winter Party in Miami, and Colossus in San Francisco,” said Delmar.

“It is rare that a DJ of his stature comes to Seattle. He has made only one prior appearance in Seattle … and SLOTH marks his return to the Seattle area,” Delmar told SGN. “Putting a positive spin on sin” is the idea behind the Seven Deadly Sins dance series.

All events in the Seven Deadly Sins series go to benefit Gay City Health Project, a local Gay and Bisexual men’s health organization.

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Rapture of the Deep Balagan Theatre Through September 25 Eric Lane Barnes is a tremendous musician and song composer, and has written wonderfully funny full-length productions starring the Seattle Men’s Chorus “pocket choir,” Captain Smartypants. He has launched into less charted waters with his production of Rapture of the Deep, now at Balagan Theatre. Be aware that “rapture” refers to the Christian apocalyptic moment when “believers” get to suddenly rise up to heaven, and non-believers are left standing on the earth to face … ? But the other meaning of the title has to do with the idea that when one is drowning, one’s brain gets oxygen-deprived and confused, and apparently you feel somewhat rapturous – at least, that’s what Jacques Cousteau said happens to deep-sea divers.

But what the entire production is really about is an apparently autobiographical look into Eric’s relationship with an uncle, who died at age 11. Eric’s mother – his uncle’s older sister – was tremendously attached to her younger brother, Jimmy, and savored his memory. Eric seems to have become a kind of Jimmy substitute. Jimmy was not only a cherished younger brother, but he apparently had an unnaturally acute affinity for preaching (at least in this play).

The play’s characters are Gus and his mother Wanda. Gus has a best friend, Bethany, who thinks she can exorcise uncle Jimmy through vaguely goth/Wiccan Googlefound ceremonies, but is stopped by her ultra-Christian mother, Eileen. Eileen seduces Gus to come to her youth group meetings and ultimately to be baptized in the spirit, alienating Gus from Bethany.

Religion is a huge part of the play. There are songs, but they are not “musical theater” songs, since none of them actually move the story forward by way of singing about it. They may be original compositions

by Barnes, but they are all Jesus-focused.

There is no making-fun aspect of religion here. In fact, it’s a somewhat serious attempt to try to figure out whether religion actually transcends and “saves.”

It turns out that the most compelling character is not Gus, it’s Bethany (Lauren Kottwitz). Bethany reveals how desperately addicted Eileen was to various means of feeling better before Eileen finds “God.” Eileen (Alyssa Keene) also tells a story of attempted suicide and, not finding herself dead yet, how watching a televangelist saved her life.

But how Bethany has to be mother to her mother is a very compelling and interesting story.

A pre-party will be held at The Lobby Bar from 7-9 p.m. featuring door prizes and a special “secret” performance. DJ Jame Foks of Washington, D.C. will be opening for DJ Gauthreaux at Neumos and will also be spinning the afterparty at the Baltic Room starting at 1:30 a.m.

The producers say they have a few surprises in store, and the event’s tag line is “expect the unexpected.”

SGN ’s fall movie preview: Part 2

Things heat up quite a bit in November and December. Harry Potter is back for the first installment of his final adventure, Denzel Washington battles it out with a runaway train, and James Franco is forced to use his arm as a cutting board after getting stuck in a very tight place a long way above the ground. Valerie Plame’s story gets the Hollywood treatment, as does a WWII British monarch with a very bad stuttering problem, while Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor engage in a bit of prison-yard romance blurring the line between fact and fiction into virtual insignificance.

Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton team up for a newsroom comedy some think might be an Oscar contender, while Cher returns to the silver screen for the first time in over a decade – and she’s brought along Christina Aguilera with her.

The final months of the year offer something for everyone (even the Coen brothers taking on a John Wayne Western classic and Natalie Portman getting so worked up about her future as a ballerina she begins to metamorphose into a swan), and the only question remaining is which films will rise to the occasion and which ones will disappear into cinematic insignificance.

Requiem spin a yarn about bright lights in the sky, foreshadowing an alien invasion we apparently asked for.

Unstoppable – Director Tony Scott and actor Denzel Washington re-team for the fifth time, bringing us a thriller about an out-of-control locomotive carrying combustible materials and the dedicated engineer driven to stop it before it causes citywide devastation.

Waste Land – Director Lucy Walker’s (Countdown to Zero) superb documentary

Mickey Ward starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Melissa Leo and directed by the fiery and controversial David O. Russell (Three Kings, Spanking the Monkey).

The Tourist – In his first film since the remarkable The Lives of Others, director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck ensnares Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in a Hitchcockian web of mistaken identity, espionage, and romance where nothing is as it seems and everything is in question. One of December’s most intriguing titles.

Love and Other Drugs – More Oscar bait, this time one featuring Anne Hathaway as a young Parkinson’s sufferer who enters into a quirky, unpredictable romance with a selfcentered drug company rep played by Jake Gyllenhaal.

Tangled – Rapunzel finally lets down her hair in this 3D CG animated effort from Disney. Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi provide the voices.

Beren deMotier’s The Brides of March, and Mercy is very happy about the recommendation. The book is autobiographical and deals with that period when Multnomah County made Gay marriage legal. It is told in beautifully written and funny journal entries.

DeMotier and her partner stood in line when the licenses first became available and got married that day, in case the law might be reversed. There were a handful of couples who did the same thing, whom she calls “The Brides of March.” The fact that she

and her partner Janine had children 1, 9, and 12 adds to the humor relating to the event.

The story turns sad when the marriages are reversed by a court and the possibility of same-sex marriage in Oregon is undone by an election.

The Grammy winner is responsible for not only skyrocketing his own career with songs like “Yeah” and “OMG,” but he’s also credited for launching the career of bubblegum pop twink Justin Beiber. Details for Usher’s concert, such as ticket prices and on-sale date, were not available at press time.

Dance-pop recording artist Robyn, whose latest album Body Talk Pt. 1 was unveiled at a CD release party co-hosted by Seattle Gay News, is finally making a return appearance to the Northwest after what seems like a multi-year absence. The Swedish performer opened a few European dates for Madonna’s “Sticky and Sweet” tour, but oddly bypassed North America on a solo outing to promote her Grammy-nominated self-titled album.

She’ll play at Neumos on November 21 – tickets are $25 advance at www.etix.com.

To no one’s surprise (certainly not mine), The xx captured the 2010 Mercury Music Prize for their self-titled debut. The award, given annually to a UK artist by a panel comprised of peers and media, is equivalent to Album of the Year. Featuring the melancholy rock singles “Crystalised” and “Basic Space,” it earned a spot on SGN’s Top Ten Albums/CDs of 2009, and it secures the London band as a potential Best New Art-

ist nominee when the Grammy nominations are announced on December 1. The xx performs at the Paramount Theatre on September 25 – look for a review of the show by SGN writer Jessica Price.

The legendary Nancy Wilson is never to be missed, especially when she performs at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley – she returns to the intimate venue for a four-night stay September 30 through October 3. The jazz-soul icon is one of the quietest, yet most powerful divas I’ve ever seen in concert, and her rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” is startling. At 73, Wilson has retired from extensive touring, but makes special engagements such as the upcoming shows at the Jazz Alley. Concert update: Vampire Weekend has rescheduled its Marymoor Park show from last month, canceled at the last minute because lead singer Ezra Koenig was rushed to the hospital for sudden illness. The band will now play two consecutive nights, September 22 and 23, at the Paramount Theatre.

She thanked the soldiers and also thanked the Gays for remaking her videos over and over again.

In addition to drawing attention to repealing DADT on live television, Gaga had her website, www.LadyGaga.com, direct supporters to www.SLDN.org to take action and call the Capitol switchboard. The message to Senators: Vote on DADT repeal the week of September 20.

Gaga’s support for repeal did not stop there. She tweeted, “Gay Veterans were my VMA dates. Repeal DADT. Call Harry Reid to schedule Senate Vote.”

Senator Harry Reid responded, “There is a vote on DADT next week. Anyone qualified to serve this country should be allowed

The staging is simple, as one would expect for a dance show: a bare stage with an extensive percussion set placed upstage for two individual players. There are two vocalists (male and female) that sing live (both in solo and duet), and then there is the dance troupe, consisting of 20 dancers, split into couples.

The props may be simple, but that is all they need. The program is divided into four different sections and two separate acts, which exemplify the sensuality, sexuality, and passion of dance.

The dancers made their first appearance in the theatre aisles, immediately bringing the audience into the show and giving us the first glance with a close-up look of these extremely taut bodies. Women clad in formal dance gowns were partnered with men in tight pants with open shirts, to make sure the audience knew what the evening was about. The program’s listing of dance numbers ranged from the elegant Viennese waltz to swing, Latin American tango, and pasodoble. The latter dances were so incredibly sensual and hot that sweat flew off the dancers as they performed each step with distinctive sharpness. Alternating between the passionate Latin-based dances (samba and salsa) and the classical styles (foxtrot and waltz) were peppered with a hip edge (Lindy hop and dirty boogie) to allow a visual variety of pure voyeuristic pleasures.

“Lady Gaga’s recognition of these fine patriots casts a spotlight on the unjust burden that DADT imposes upon the brave men and women who defend our country every day, and further underscores why the Senate must swiftly act to get rid of this despicable law for good,” said Aubrey Sarvis, Army veteran and executive director of SLDN. “With expected votes on the Senate floor later this month, advocates of open service still have time to contact their senators and urge them to show support for all our veterans by voting to end DADT.”

After a Japanese tour – that did better than Britney Spears – the show continued to travel the world, finally landing triumphantly as a “special engagement, limited run” on Broadway.

The crowd was a mix of blissed-out couples (Gay and straight), fans who seemed expressly familiar with the band’s entire catalog, and a handful of hip parents taking their kids to an all-ages show in Marymoor’s picturesque locale. The outdoor sound system didn’t carry opener Okkervil River very well, but for The National’s deeper, moodier tones, the setting – and the sound – were perfect complements.

High Violet was released in May. After touring for the rest of 2010, the band will swing through Europe and Australia – and with any luck, back through the Northwest again.

the steps, it’s like getting into the VIP room of a trendy club. The analogy isn’t far from wrong. The cellar has a sound system and comfy couches, and I’m told it’s been the site of considerable debauchery.

The wine collection is stunning. I didn’t know where to look first. The cellar contains over 20,000 bottles, 2,100 labels, and some of the most impressive verticals in the world, including 20 years of Château Mouton-Rothschild. You can buy a bottle of 1964 Domaine De La Romanée-Conti for a cool $20,000 if you’re in town for a special occasion. There are also numerous excellent wines from all over the world that are a bit more reasonably priced.

The superlative staff served up the seven-course menu with choreographed precision. The food was absolute perfection, and the wine pairings preternatural. Highlights included the fennel-crusted yellowfin tuna nicoise with olive tapenade, green beans, and quail egg, the Québec foie gras, and the nitro ice cream with sundae toppings. The nitro ice cream was whipped up dramatically at our table by the dreamy pastry chef Dominic Fortin using real-life liquid nitrogen that gives the concoction a lovely silky texture and sends fog bubbling out of the bowl (it’s like dry ice in water, but with way more fog).

Adara Hotel The Adara Hotel is conveniently located across the street from the Barefoot Bistro and about 3,000 feet from the base of Whistler Mountain. The village stroll – a meandering pedestrian thoroughfare meant to resemble a mountain stream – is readily accessible via a breezeway between the shops.

The Adara’s decor is a trendy take on the mountain lodge with faux wood grain, faux fur, and graphic pictures of logs throughout.

Getting there from here The Peace Arch is lovely and all, but it’s no fun waiting in line for a couple of hours because everyone in Washington decides to visit Canada on the same day. And if you have plans to be someplace at a specific time, delays can be disastrous. There’s an easy fix: take the train. Two round-trip tickets on the Amtrak Cascades will set you back a measly $75, and you can leave the driving to the conductor. Another benefit: Customs is a snap once you get to Vancouver (on the way home, the train stops at the border for U.S. customs).

We were dropped off at Seattle’s King Street station (thanks for the ride, KK) at 7:10 a.m. to catch the 7:40 a.m. train. That gave us plenty of time to get boarding passes, a surprisingly simple process. We settled in and kicked back for the fourhour ride with lovely views of Puget Sound and Skagit County farmland.

Canadian customs at Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station is quick and easy (and their customs officers are actually pleasant). The Main Street Sky Train Station is conveniently located just across the street, providing easy access to downtown, the airport, and other communities around the city. If you’re taking the Rocky Mountaineer Whistler Sea to Sky Climb train to Whistler, you’ll have to use coach service or a taxi to get to that station in North Vancouver. The Sea to Sky Climb is one of the most acclaimed train rides on the planet, and features five-star service along with the beautiful landscapes and ubiquitous wildlife. Look for package deals that include accommodations and expect to pay between $200 and $500 for two days during summer and fall. You can also load your package with tours, passes, and access to various attractions.

We opted to rent a car in Vancouver since we were planning on spending a couple of days on the Sunshine Coast after we visited Whistler. Picking up a rental car in downtown Vancouver costs nearly twice as much as renting a car in the suburbs. We found an Enterprise office on Southwest Marine Drive (between downtown Vancouver and the airport) that was within walking distance of the Sky Train. We purchased two-zone Sky Train passes for $3.75 each and hopped on for a pleasant half-hour ride to pick up the rental car. Though we could have easily hoofed it from the Sky Train to the Enterprise Office, the good folks at Enterprise offered to pick us up. By 2:00 p.m., we were headed to Whistler on the gorgeous Sea to Sky Highway in our bright red Nissan Versa.

Sunshine Coast The Sunshine Coast is British Columbia’s best-kept secret. Nobody in the States knew what I meant when I told them where Steven and I were going. Here’s the skinny: The Sunshine Coast stretches nearly 100 miles from Langdale to Powell River northwest of the city of Vancouver, B.C. and is an easy five-hour trip directly from Seattle. The drive down from Whistler to the ferry terminal at Horseshoe Bay takes about an hour and a half. A short 40-minute ferry ride later and we were cruising along Highway 101, one of the sweetest ocean drives around.

Helpful tip: make reservations for the ferry, especially for busy weekends.

The Sunshine Coast is Whistler’s antithesis. There are no mountain bikers careening down mountains, no power shoppers with smoking credit cards, and no tourists trying to cram too many activities into their

Rockwater Secret Cove Resort The Rockwater Secret Cove Resort is a 45-minute drive along Highway 101 from the Langdale ferry terminal. You’ll pass through a number of small communities with eateries and produce stands along the way. Feel free to stop and chat up the locals; Canadians are decidedly nice folks and Sunshine Coasters seem to be the friendliest of all.

Rockwater occupies seven and a half acres of waterfront property and sports three types of accommodations. The main lodge has 14 ocean-view rooms with easy pool access. There are 11 cabins featuring ocean or woodland views and ranging from one to three bedrooms. Finally, there are 13 luxury tent-house suites hanging off the cliffs overlooking the water. Each tent-house suite features a fully appointed bathroom, hydrotherapy tub, gas fireplace, and a private deck with striking views of the inland sea. A 1,500-foot wooden catwalk connects each tent-house suite with the main lodge.

The effect is enchanting, like a romantic tree house for adults with all the amenities and a terrific view. The tent-house suites are all about romance and atmosphere so no kids allowed (kids under 14 do stay free in the cabins and lodge rooms). The tents are the perfect place to celebrate an anniversary,

In fact, the Rockwater is famous for weddings and offers a number of wedding packages (and Queer couples can actually get married up there). The most intriguing is the Elopement Package, designed for two.

The package includes a personalized consultation with the Rockwater Elopement Coordinator along with many other amazing perks, from a professional photographer to a personalized wedding cake.

Prices range from $1,500 to $1,750, depending on the time of year.

Known as one of the best restaurants on the Sunshine Coast and gaining a reputation beyond, the dinner menu features a creative roster of dishes with regional ties. I asked the server to choose my menu. Rihon, who is now my culinary hero, started me with the Fraser Valley duck confit with warm wild mushroom and spinach salad. For dinner, she picked the bacon-wrapped pork cheek terrine with confit belly, poached pears, and frisée salad. She paired it with the 2008 Ex Nihilo Vineyard Pinot Gris. The wine had bold and complex fruit with just a hint of nutmeg on the backside, and was the perfect foil to the rich pork.

West Coast Wilderness Lodge When the owner of a first-class resort shows up covered in sawdust and drywall, you know you’re meeting a hands-on sort of guy. That’s exactly Paul Hansen’s modus operandi. Paul is an outdoorsman with a bucolic but effective business acumen who has built the West Coast Wilderness Lodge (WCWL) from scratch with his own hands.

When he talks about the place, imagining the rustic building being around long after he’s gone while looking off the deck to the dazzling views of mountains, inlets, and

forests, you can feel the passion pouring out along with the words.

Paul may be biased, but he’s not wrong.

The WCWL is a typical lodge with beautiful native wood used for floors, walls, and furnishings. However, instead of going kitschy with carved bears, moose, and eagles splattered everywhere, this lodge went to finishing school. There are a couple of tasteful Native American carvings, but nothing cheap. Large wooden structural beams are left to radiate their natural strength and beauty. With windows filled by views like these, cluttering your walls with cheap art would be a real sin.

The accommodations, too, are wilderness lodge done minimalist modern, with headboards and bathroom counters handmade

Paul offers a formidable slate of adventure tours, trips, and rentals, including heli-hiking, kayaking, alpine mountain biking, fresh and saltwater fishing, float plane tours, and the exhilarating Zodiac boat excursions.

After a long day exploring the local wilds, you can settle in on the fabulous deck and enjoy a great dinner with the aforementioned dazzling views. The menu is Eurominimalist with obvious local influences. I started with a hearty carrot dill soup perfectly pureed to a slightly rough consistency that was pleasant and gave the flavors a layered effect. For my main course, I tried the hemp-heart-crusted halibut served with basmati rice smothered in a caper berry remoulade. The halibut was crusty outside and juicy tender inside, allowing the rich flavors to come together like clockwork. Paul hauled out a bottle of the 2007 Osoyoos Larose Le Grand Vin, a big Okanagan red made from all five Bordeaux varietals.
