It’s the time of year when Hollywood begins to back off from all of the pointless sequels, remakes, and comic book and/or video game adaptations and actually gets a wee bit serious in hopes of earning an all-important Oscar. They assume audiences actually have a brain and program serious-minded films for the serious-minded filmgoer, and the last months of the year are a triumph of cinematic quality.

Yeah, right. While those aforementioned statements aren’t exactly false, it isn’t like there aren’t a ton of low-aiming pictures dotting the release schedule. Milla Jovovich is back for another round of zombie killing – this time in 3D – in Resident Evil: Afterlife, while MTV’s famously flatulent see films page 30

But the insecure Ivy League brat

that he has often been perceived as was nowhere to be seen when the band headlined the main stage at Bumbershoot on Sunday night. Proving that you can definitely be grown up and rock the foundations of a city stadium, the singer led his peers into an earthshattering performance that was undoubtedly one of the brightest highlights at the entire music and arts festival. see weezer page 32

Lady GaGa leads all nominees for this weekend’s MTV Video Music Awards with 13 nods, including two for Video of the Year – her final tally will be in single digits, though, due to the fact that she competes against herself in four categories. Superstar rapper Eminem earned eight nominations, mainly for his fearless, on-the-edge (literally) video “Not Afraid,” while other multiple nominees include Katy Perry, Jason Derulo, and Ke$ha. The LA ceremony (televised on MTV on September 12) will feature performances by Pink, Jay-Z, 30 Seconds to Mars, Usher, Nicki Minaj, and a very preggers Alicia Keys, to name a few. Honestly, I have no idea who votes for these darn things – I tune in for the craziness, a la Kanye West’s microphone ambush – so here’s my best guess at predicting the winners in five top categories.

Video of the Year: “Kings and Queens” – 30 Seconds to Mars, “Airplanes” – B.o.B. featuring Hayley Williams, “Not Afraid” – Eminem, “Dog Days Are Over” – Florence + the Machine, “Bad Romance” – Lady GaGa, “Telephone” – Lady GaGa featuring Beyoncé Will Win: “Dog Days Are Over” The voting committee has an opportunity to crown a complete underdog, and Florence + the Machine’s trippy mix of retro and futuristic scenarios will be the perfect choice.

Should Win: “Telephone” Considering the thousands of entries that are eligible for this award, this particular lineup is a sad representation of the best. But even so, the diva powers that be created a phenomenon with this catchy music video.

“Tik Tok” – Ke$ha, “Massive Attack” – Nicki Minaj featuring Sean Garrett Will Win: “Baby” The prepubescent set – and those in older age groups who’ve fallen for this commercial brat – will secure him the win.

Should Win: “Massive Attack” Despite its sci-fi setting and a gorgeous star vehicle in Christina Hendricks of Mad Men, Broken Bells’ video falls short in eye appeal to Minaj’s Jungle Barbie-meetsCommando-meets-Road Warrior adventure, which is as infectious and off-kilter as the song itself.

ZooTunes: Cyndi Lauper September 2 Woodland Park Zoo There is no doubt that Cyndi Lauper is one of the most eclectic entertainers of our time. On Thursday, September 2, at the last of the ZooTunes concert series, Cyndi Lauper again showed that she is still a girl that can have fun with anything, including the blues. Booked later in the season, Ms. Lauper was scheduled into the series just in time to promote her latest CD release, Memphis Blues.

Exploring musical roots, Ms. Lauper covered a collection of songs written by some of the greatest blues artists of our time. Cyndi took to the stage in a black suit and flaming, fire-engine-red hair, beginning with “Just You Fool,” with assistance from her opening act, blues artist Charles Musselwhite. Her voice is suited well for a genre that can be gritty and often hard to listen to, but after only a few bars she had the crowd in the palm of her bluesy hand.

Immediately continuing with “Shattered Dreams,” Ms. Lauper paused before following with the light-hearted “Early in the Morning.”

“In a time of technology,” she said to the audience member who was continuously filming her, “you should be present. I am with you here and now and you should be

a part of that, not spending the time looking through a lens. The point of being here watching me live is to say, ‘I was there,’ instead of watching it on Youtube.” Despite several general subtleties, the audience member in question failed to listen. After being continuously ignored, Ms. Lauper made her point by addressing the culprit directly. “Hey, numbnuts! You in the blue shirt, I’m talking to you. Be present in the here and now with us and with me! Not looking through a lens.” The audience responded overwhelmingly with Ms. Lauper’s admonishment.

After covering the majority of the new Memphis Blues album, Ms. Lauper thanked the crowd and proceeded to leave the stage.

When the crowd demanded, she returned and performed a series of her classic songs as an encore, but with a bluesy twist.

Each rendition of “Down the Line,” “Change of Heart,” and “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” – which allowed everyone to break the (semi) strict “nostanding” law of the concert – was done with a blues edge. Further encores were “Time After Time,” “She Bop,” and the evening’s concert ended with the haunting AIDS memorial, “True Colors.”

Jessica Williams Mercy and Cuteness were delighted by the fact that Jessica Williams came out as part of her performance at the Triple Door last week. The amazing pianist was telling a story about talking to a live mannequin at Nordstrom’s. She mentioned her partner of 22 years was waiting in the car. Then she said, “I just came out again.” Williams also talked about her recent diagnosis with Miener’s Disease, which affects her balance. Doctors call it an idiopathic disease – “Which just means they are idiots,” she says.

She said it changes how she plays. “I used to be a speed demon. Now I have to find the beauty under all that flash.” Since Mercy and Cuteness are both disabled, they appreciated Jessica talking frankly about her disease.

Mercy delighted in Williams’ delicious playing. Her opening number, Pharaoh Sanders’ “The Creator has a Master Plan,” was slow and wrung her heart.

Jessica took “My One and Only Love” apart and put it back together her own way.

An amazing piece she dedicated to the troops, “Joe,” started serious, then changed to jazzy. She said it should also be called “Jane.”

Williams reinvented “My Funny Valentine.” A liquid piece called “Fantasia” followed. Jessica said, “That wasn’t on the set list I started out with. It just wanted to come then.” She closed with an interpretation of “My Romance” that made Mercy want to dance with Cuteness.

Mercy’s friend, Kenosis Worldwideweb, said Taurasi and Jackson are supposed to be friends, “But friendship doesn’t matter on the hardwood.”

LJ was named MVP for the game, with her 23 points. Svetlana Abrosimova, who Kenosis calls “Ambrosia,” contributed her usual verve. The final score was 82-74.

as Elsa. She too sings with lots of gorgeous soft singing, yet lacks nothing when power is called for. She and Kaufmann make a perfect pair, with lots of chemistry.

This performance at the Bayerisches Statsoper, Munich, 2009 Festival, is topnotch musically. Kent Nagano conducts with vitality and sweep and all the remaining parts are expertly handled. Wolfgang Koch and Michaela Schuster strike terror with their evil portrayals of Wagnerian versions of Lady Macbeth and her easily manipulated husband.

The production, directed by Richard Jones and designed by Ultz, is updated to Germany in the 1930s. It is relatively spare without feeling stark and in no way gets in the way of the music. Video and sound quality are state-of-the-art without being quite up to Blu-Ray hi-def quality.

You’ll find the best deal not from Amazon, but on the Amazon.com website. When you find the disc, click on the “new and used” button. You will get a better price and with no sales tax, plus a modest shipping charge.

I pick only the most promising videos to review in these articles, so don’t expect much in the way of scathing negativity.

After all, why should I draw your attention to discs I didn’t think you’d want to own? Sometimes a disc will disappoint. But mainly I want these occasional reviews of classical performances on disc to be rather strong recommendations.

No trouble here in strongly recommending this superb DVD (no BD yet available) of Wagner’s Lohengrin, released by Decca.

If you have not yet warmed to Wagner’s music, this would be a very good place to give it a go. Even more lyrical than The Flying Dutchman, this early work is full of the most gorgeous music. And the story is appealing and simple.

The main reason I found this gem is the presence of tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Lohengrin. Not only is he great here; he virtually re-defines what it means to be a Wagnerian tenor. No heldentenor has sung Reviewer Rod Parke can be reached at with such warmth and subtlety since Jon Vickers. Vickers could sing both loud and rmp62@Columbia.edu. soft, but there was no smooth connection between the two, and his soft singing often lacked a core to the sound. But Kaufmann moves easily in a perfectly focused tone from soft to loud and back again. His technique is so perfect that his face hardly shows he is singing!

That leaves his lovely face free to act and be the heartthrob that he can be.

Supremely masculine and well-proportioned, he pulls one’s attention into the heart of what’s going on. Seldom does one see such consistent and convincing acting on the opera stage.

Also in 3D is Disney’s 28-years-later sequel Tron: Legacy, 300 director Zack Snyder’s foray into digital animation The Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, the Hayden Panettiere- and Christina Ricci-voiced Alpha & Omega, Jigsaw’s reportedly final killing spree Saw 3D, Dreamworks’ Will Ferrel/Brad Pitt-led animated Megamind, the latest trip into author C.S. Lewis’ religiously inspired fantasyland The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the pic-a-nic basket-loving Yogi Bear and the golden-haired animated adventure Tangled.

As if that weren’t enough (and trust me, as tired as I am of 3D, this is more than enough), the final adventure of everyone’s favorite boy wizard Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I will also be presented in the format on both regular and IMAX screens everywhere. In all honesty, this kind of blows my mind as the reactions to Warner Bros. 2D to 3D conversions of both Clash of the Titans and that awful Cats & Dogs sequel met with almost total disdain. It’s flabbergasting that they’re willing to risk the same kind of backlash on their biggest cash cow (and, I almost hesitate to say this, a potential Academy Award nominee).

There are plenty of bright spots, of course. Dotting the release schedule are major releases from Clint Eastwood (Hereafter), David Fincher (The Social Network), Danny Boyle (127 Hours), James L. Brooks (How Do You Know), Zhang Yimou (A Woman,

And calling something documentary brings up another problem: What is documentary, and how much theater is involved when you turn the camera on? We use the term “documentary” to describe movies that are about real subjects. We document reality; we create fiction. But documentary films are usually narrative and often somewhat fictional. Certain elements of most documentaries incorporate cinematic devices, recreations, and flawed recollections to draw their subjects. Simply turning the camera on changes reality into ... something else. So, in the fading (we hope) era of reality television with its manufactured stars and with the advent of digital landscapes and ubiquitous internet journalism, reality itself seems to be in a state of flux. I’m Still Here takes a talented guy with real star power and turns him into a reality show hack about one step below Spencer Pratt.

That’s good satire.

Mostly, I’m Still Here is a fascinating attempt at a satirical take on the notion of celebrity. Satire is tough to get right, and it’s high praise to say Affleck and Phoenix get it right a good 80% of the time. There are some truly hilarious moments and you can’t help having some emotional response to the bloated and filthy shade of a former A-lister. Either Joaquin has gone batshit crazy, or he has dedicated two years of his life collaborating with his talented brother-in-law to make a fascinating, if flawed, little film. ma gn ol ia

I’m Still Here Opening September 10 I’m Still Here is many things. One thing it’s not: a conventional documentary, regardless of the straight-faced claims by the filmmakers. But let’s talk about what I’m Still Here is.

I’m Still Here is an interesting attempt at social satire. This is a film about the viewer as much as it is a film about Joaquin Phoenix. This is a film about how much we relish watching stars fall, how much we revel in the failure of others. We’ve collectively viewed the Letterman video millions of times, vainly trying to figure out what went wrong with the handsome young star.

These days, by the time you get to the “q” in Joaquin’s name while searching YouTube, “joaquin phoenix letterman” pops right up.

Whether it’s Britney going cue ball circa 2007 or Fatty Arbuckle crushing a starlet to death in flagrante circa 1921, we like our celebrities to go large and fall hard.

I’m Still Here is also a film about celebrity and all that celebrity entails. Unfortunately, the celebrity in this instance, the character of the narcissistic actor capriciously turned wannabe rapper, seems slightly cliché at times, which makes a fairly clever little movie feel a tad less clever. The boys, director Casey Affleck and Phoenix, are going for urbane but come off smug. Joaquin opens

gets a meeting with Sean Combs (speaking of ... never mind). The climax comes as J.P. is heckled off the stage and ends up barfing into a toilet while his assistant dutifully holds his tie out of the puke-stream.

There’s also an unfortunate allusion, intended or not (it doesn’t matter), to the title of I’m Not There, the avant-garde Bob Dythe film by whining about being known as lan bio pic by Todd Haynes (a much better an emotional, tense, and complicated art- film). Both films ist. Really? It must be quite a cross to bear.

As we know celebrities aren’t just misunderstood and tortured.

They’re also egotistical and debauched. Joaquin doesn’t let us down. This version of Joaquin, self referenced in the film as J.P., is a bloated, chain smoking, cocaine snorting, hooker fucking snot without an ounce of effective introspection or restraint. J.P. screams at his friend and personal assistant (don’t they know this will end poorly?), Anton, “I’ll shit on your face!” at one point – a tortured metaphor that J.P. lives to keenly regret.

Successful celebrities are also impulsive and arrogant.

as the beauty of female illusionary artistry is expressed through creative make-up, hair, and costume design.

Contestants were judged in Formal, Theme, Showgirl, and Talent categories as they worked the gigantic stage and runway at the Oregon Convention Center’s Portland Ballroom. Style, beauty, talent, glamour, beaded gowns, rhinestone jewelry, and Vegas-style showgirl costumes were all part of what seduced the judges and wowed the audience. In the end, it was Lily Armani who would be crowned La Femme Magnifique International 2010.

“When they announced my name, all I could think was, ‘Thank you, Cher!’” Lily Armani told SGN. “The blood sweat, tears, and faith were not in vain. I hopefully made everyone who believed that I could win proud.”

“I also thought, ‘I can finally eat fried chicken again!’” joked Lily, since she was on a strict diet to ensure that she would fit into the slender gowns she chose for the pageant.

“The journey to La Femme was long – very, very long,” said Lily. “But it was worth every single day it took. The previous attempts were glorious, and I will never discount them, but this was the year that I was ready – truly ready – to earn the title.”

This was Lily Armani’s third appearance at La Femme Magnifique International.

She began her quest in 2005 (earning first runner-up) and returned in 2006 (where she earned second runner-up).

“I would have to say that guidance was drawn from previous winners, Coco Vaughn, La Vanda Dela Rosa, and Gaysha Starr,” Lily admitted. “Inspiration was pulled from making those that worked so hard with me proud.”

“As someone who has helped many of the past International winners, and having done pageants and drag for a very long time now, I know how important it was to inspire Lily Armani to bring to the stage what she does so well – to be her funny, exuberant self,” Coco Vaughn, who was the first Washington resident to win La Femme Magnifique International in 1986, told SGN. “All the talent she ever needed was right there.

This time around, she had the chance to be who she is and not what others thought she should be as a contestant. That has always been my advice to anyone I’ve ever worked with in a competition.”

Coco says it is important that International contestants “know what you are getting into, know who you are, and then gather up the forces to help present the very best ‘you’ there can be.”

“Lily is a big force in Seattle, and this big win will only magnify just how fun, hardworking, and worthwhile performers from our city can be,” concluded Coco.

Coco said she is thankful to Neighbours Nightclub and the Lobby Bar for being venues that showcase the great drag talent the Pacific Northwest has to offer.

Lily Armani and her team say they left very little to luck.

“Oprah Winfrey shares that there is no such thing as luck,” reminds Lily. “If anything, luck is preparation meeting opportunity. I was a skeptic, but now I’m a believer!”

“Team Armani began many years ago.

I have been fortunate to be surrounded by some of the most incredibly gifted, beautiful, and generous people in the world,” said Lily, describing the team of friends that helped her win La Femme. “I have always acknowledged that it takes a village to put all of me together. And while some of the faces have changed in the team over the years, their imprints on my life and career are immortal.”

Dakita Harris, who jokingly described herself as Lily’s left arm and hand while fellow “Team Armani” soldier Michael Rotman Koenen is Lily’s manager and right arm and hand, said that the team began to prepare months ago when Lily won La Femme Magnifique Washington, qualifying her to compete in the International Pageant.

“Over 8 million beads were used – just in one blue gown,” joked Dakita, quantifying

the number of months, days, and hours it took for the team to feel they were ready to compete at the international level. “I became a part of the team, and remain one, because of the team itself. Everyone brings something unique to the table. Only Lily Armani could get a group of people to spend their holiday weekend in a sweatshop-like environment beading, gluing, and sewing, all because of the person she is. We all worked hard to make it look easy, and I love that about us.”

“As soon as we committed to regionals, we put 150% effort in, and didn’t stop,” said Michael, who has managed Lily for over four years. “The last week leading up to La Femme was crunch time, and we made it happen.”

“I love what I do,” he continued. “I love this team and I believe in Lily’s talent. My time with Team Armani has been one of the highlights of my life.”

Thom Hubert, otherwise known in drag as GLAMAZONIA, worked on costume design/construction and props, as well as acting as driver and chauffeur. He told SGN that Team Armani “likes to present a polished and finished package, and I think we did that.”

Thom painted the picture of a monthslong environment of dress construction and a living room that “has been covered in rhinestones, glitter, and fabric” for weeks.

Due to a botched order of crystal beads, Team Armani received a double order to make up for a mistake. “We used them all,” Thom said.

“I’m happy to be able to lend whatever talent I have to helping Lily reach her goal,” Thom told SGN. “As her partner, I’m close enough to the ‘eye of the storm’ to not be involved. I’m lucky that I have an interest in drag as well, and enjoy the whirlwind of pageant prep. Lily is fortunate in that she attracts good people to her. Team Armani is a family in a lot of ways, and we all support her year-round – not just for big events like La Femme. Every show, every week, anything she needs, one or all of us has got it covered.”

As a La Femme Magnifique International, Lily told SGN she plans to be as visible as possible. “Many girls have traveled far and wide, and I have every intention of being one of those girls.”

“I would like to convey my gratitude to all of those that were involved in the preparation – not just this year, but every day of every week of every year that it took to make this goal a check mark on the bucket list,” she said. “There are too many names to mention, but they are definitely remembered and loved so very much. I can honestly say – for the first time and have it be true – I am the most blessed queen in the entire world.”

Clad in a tight blue sweater with black stripes, Cuomo set the tone of the night by jumping up and down across the stage like a caffeinated Chihuahua. He then picked up the microphone stand with his right hand and thrust it towards the audience to thunderous cheers.

Cuomo exclaimed “Seattle is frickin’ crazy!” as he demonstrated his own “insanity” by climbing up the scaffolding of the left side of the stage and gyrating his hips above the watchful eyes of two nervous security staff members. As if belting out the night’s soundtrack for Cuomo’s wacky antics, the band dove right into “Troublemaker” from 2008’s “Red Album,” then played its crowdpleasing first single “Undone – The Sweater Song” and “Surf Wax U.S.A.” from the band’s 1994 debut “Blue Album.”

This marked a point in the explosive show where Cuomo’s energy remained frenetic but seemed to become tempered by a softer side. Crooning out an impassioned rendition of “Perfect Situation,” Cuomo hopped on the edge of the stage and held his microphone out to the audience. “Sing it for me!” he yelled, as the audience swooned together as one sweaty organism with a booming, com-

munal “Ohhhhhhh, Oh! Ohhhhhhh, Oh!” As the band segued into “Say it Ain’t So,” red and yellow lights bathed fans surfing the crowd towards the front of the stage who were held up and pushed forward by throngs of fans. This frenetic loyalty seemed to inspire Cuomo, who howled, “This is where we started, people – Seattle!” in reference to former DJ Marco Collins of local radio station The End (now at KEXP), who is credited for sparking the heavy national airplay of “Undone” that catapulted Weezer’s debut to triple-platinum status in the U.S. In contrast to opening act Hole – whose lead singer Courtney Love referred to the audience as “a bunch of motherfuckers” – Cuomo strived to create an intimacy with the audience and the city that was contrary to his trademark stoicism. He somewhat tenderly confessed, “This one is right from me to you,” and dove into “Island in the Sun” while a number of giant beach balls appeared out of nowhere and concertgoers on the floor volleyed them to each other. Cuomo also seemed more personable in the way he negotiated stage space with his amusing antics; he took breaks from climbing on the scaffolding to dance in a white spotlight on each end of the stage, and then hopped down off the stage to give high-fives to fans on the other side of the front stage barrier as he pumped out “My Name is Jonas” and “Beverly Hills.” Cuomo’s frenetic dramatis personae peaked after a guitar-heavy rendition of “Pork and Beans,” whose effect was undermined by the tune’s bonehead lyrics.

To the delight of everyone in the stadium, Weezer next launched into a phenomenal cover of MGMT’s Grammy-nominated third single, “Kids.” Perhaps in homage to the city’s LGBTQ community or to emphasize the instability of gender roles themselves, Cuomo donned a blonde wig and segued into a short version of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face.” The band ended with passionate versions of “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To” and “Buddy Holly,” and closed the night with an impressive finale where all the bandmates played on one drum set to flickering strobe lights.

Not only did Weezer refute former criticisms by staging an epic show, but Cuomo’s sincerity more importantly reminded us that loneliness, lies, love, lust, and confusion are what make us all human – and what, ironically, make life worth living.

Albert Rodriguez: It’s been announced that Scissor Sisters are going to be touring with Lady GaGa. Del Marquis: We don’t know where that came from, because it’s not something we’re aware is happening.

Rodriguez: So you can’t confirm that?

Marquis: No, I can’t confirm that.

Rodriguez: Are you a Lady GaGa fan, though?

Marquis: I’m a fan of her chutzpah and her ambition. [Laughs.] There’s a lot of things that she does better than anyone else out there, and I admire her work ethic.

Rodriguez: Do you remember when you and I were shopping for jeans at the Diesel store together?

Marquis: Yes, yes, I remember going into the Diesel store and maybe looking at sunglasses and jeans. I don’t shop anymore; it’s my rule on tour. I do not want to fill up my suitcase, and therefore I have a shopping moratorium.

Rodriguez: What if you see something that you really, really like?

Marquis: You only see it if you go shopping, and I don’t go shopping. I save shopping for one country, one city only, and that’s Tokyo. If you’re a man with slight shoulders or a small to average build, it is the mecca of clothes. I have a 36-inch inseam and can never get suits or jackets or things that fit me right, I always have to have them taken in.

Over there, I wear mediums and larges, and I buy up everything.

Rodriguez: You guys have a loyal fan base in the U.S., but you have a huge following in Europe and play big arenas there.

How do explain this?

Marquis: We have great shows here in

the States, our tour’s been amazing here.

The only difference is that dance music never fell out of favor overseas, at least not in Europe and the UK. If there is one thing particular that Lady GaGa has helped to maybe open up a few doors for us again, is that it’s brought dance music back into the mainstream chart.

Rodriguez: Between the last album, Tadah, and the new one, Night Work, did you do anything on your own or take time off?

Marquis: I wrote and recorded four EPs. These are records that I co-produced and wrote and played most of the instruments.

They’re on iTunes only, under my name.

Rodriguez: How is the rest of the band doing?

Marquis: We’re all doing well. We’ve never really gotten on this well before and everyone is in extremely good shape. We have a trainer on tour and he’s watching what we eat, so we’ve been treating our bodies like athletes. We don’t stop moving, there’s a lot of energy on stage.

Rodriguez: Does this mean no Frappucinos on the tour?

Marquis: Oh God, no Frappucinos! I don’t even do coffee anymore. I only do iced tea.

Rodriguez: What’s been the reaction from live crowds to songs from Night Work?

Marquis: The first month and a half, the album wasn’t out, and you’d see people listening intently, trying to follow along and by the second verse they’d want to start singing. Now that the album has been out, people know the whole verse and our shows are even tighter and the crowds have been great. We enjoy playing this record, and play almost every song off of it.

Rodriguez: I’m really loving “Sex and Violence.”

Marquis: That’s the only one we sometimes play and sometimes do not. I’ll make a note to try and get that out for the Seattle show for you.

Rodriguez: Does the set list vary from city to city?

Marquis: We have a locked-in set for most of this leg of the U.S. tour. We may throw in “Sex and Violence,” and there’s a couple of B-sides that may pop up, but it stays pretty much solid.

Rodriguez: Do you have a favorite song from the new album to play live?

Marquis: I love playing “Skin Tight” and we all love doing “Invisible Light,” which is towards the end of the set – it’s a big climax with lasers and full production.

Rodriguez: Tell me about your outfits for this tour, because you guys like to wear shiny, shimmery, glittery stuff. What are you guys sporting on stage?

Marquis: We’re more concerned about how our show is sounding, so the clothes have dialed down a bit. In the time we started, we’ve seen a lot more people using stylists and pushing their stage outfits to extremes, in ways we really can’t afford to keep up with. But I still want something that’s gonna make me feel really body conscious – that usually means it’s tight – and it can’t be something you would wear on the street. It has to elevate your regular personality to an almost superhero version of yourself.

Rodriguez: Do you guys hit the Gay clubs after the shows?

Marquis: We usually just set aside maybe three dates on the tour for after-parties, and I’d say those are the only times we go out and party. If you go out drinking every night, you’d never be able put on a great show night after night, so we pick and choose which cities we want to party in.

Rodriguez: Is there lots of porn on the tour bus?

Marquis: I’m sure everyone has their own personal porn collection on their computers, but it’s not put on the main television.

Rodriguez: The road crew wouldn’t appreciate that too much, probably.

Marquis: The road crew has their own bus, and I’m sure it’s full of porn playing 24 hours a day. They’re way randier than we are.

Rodriguez: Should fans bring any kind of accessories or items when they come to your show?

Marquis: Just wear light clothing, and expect to take it off at some point.

Neighbours Nightclub opened its doors Labor Day Weekend in 1983 and has become one of Seattle’s longest-running and largest GLBT nightclubs. Neighbours can hold over 1,100 people and boasts three stories, a state-of-the-art sound system and light show, and one of the largest dance floors in Seattle.

Neighbours is proud to have won several “Best of Washington,” “Best of Seattle,” and “Best of Seattle Weekly” polls, and various community awards. We welcome anyone, regardless of sexual orientation, and are constantly trying to find ways to entertain and add to the Seattle nightlife, with some exciting additions and events planned for fall and winter 2010!

Neighbours has hosted some of the world’s biggest entertainers, from CD and movie release parties to public and live performances, including Lance Bass, Carol Channing, Darcelle XV and Company, Frenchie Davis, Lady GaGa, Ari Gold, Thelma Houston, Jimmy James, Kenny Kerr, Eartha Kitt, Reichen Lehmkul, the cast of West Side Story and Wicked, along with various Broadway shows.

In the last year, we have hosted Ryan Barry, Little Boots, Lady Bunny, Christian Chavez, Landon Conrad, Fedro, Aden Jaric, Jordan Jaric, Alexis Jordan, Maria Jose, Kaskade featuring Haley, Adam Killian, Blake Lewis, Go Periscope, Kim Sozzi, and Kristine W. Neighbours has also hosted some of the biggest events and longest-running club nights in Seattle, including AJAXX 63 Parties, C89.5 FM all-ages Listener Appreciation Parties 4 and 5, Club Vogue, Empress Express, Gay Seattle Pageants, La Femme Magnifique Washington Pageants, Manhunt Parties, Noche Latina-Latino Night, and Rock Lobster- ‘80s night, the Sex and the City 2 Movie Release Party, Mr. and Ms.
