Almond is bringing his brand of dance party to Neighbours Nightclub on October 15 with his new night, Velvet, which he says will attract many of his loyal listeners as well as educate the dance masses on the joys of house music.

“I’ve DJ’d off and on since I was in the 9th grade,” DJ Almond Brown told SGN. “I’ve been a musician almost all my life.”

As a DJ, Almond says he’s spun hip-hop and acid jazz, but his true love is house. “The older I got, the more I wanted to spin for my peers,” he explained. “Right now, hip-hop is a mess, and I couldn’t take another request for Ludacris. House music and its universal message of unity and a good time really appeal to me, and have since the ‘90s.”

Never Let Me Go grabs hold, but not tightly

There is almost too much hinting going on, too much minimalism, and the characters never quite achieve a threedimensional status which would make their plights, and their subdued reactions to them, fully resonate.

Said reactions are where I think many people are sadly going to have an adverse reaction. A typical gut response when faced when an unthinkable destiny is to revolt once the facts are known. When Logan knew people were dying at 30 for no purpose, he attempted to bring down the system.

by Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine), director Mark Romanek’s (One Hour Photo) Never Let Me Go isn’t easy to boil down into narrative simplicities.

While it isn’t complicated, the emotional story it tells is set in an alternative 20th-century reality where cancer is an afterthought and people routinely live into their hundreds. The central trio of characters are key reasons why this is so, and all of them navigate waters plotted out for them before their births while trying to come to grips with a life dedicated to serving those who treat them as aliens.

Ishiguro’s book told this story with remarkable eloquence. ing to the end happens to everyone, and to paraphrase a little Star Trek, how one deals with death is just as important as how they deal with life. Obstacles are everywhere and getting over them isn’t always about overcoming them, victory coming not so much in the winning as it is in the facing.

For my part, I do feel like this is where Romanek and Garland get far more right than they do wrong. If someone really takes the time to dig into things and look at what is going on, much of this can echo right down into the marrow. There are scenes that speak of an emotional catharsis that’s downright ebullient, and even though the outcome can be described as tragic, the way Kathy chooses to face it, and her hope for remembrance from a world that barely acknowledges her, is anything but.

Mulligan is wonderful, doing one heck of a lot with very little. Thanks to the script’s refinement, a lot of what we learn about and feel for Kathy comes directly from the actress portraying her. Mulligan does this almost entirely through her eyes and her body movements, the way she reacts to the people and situations around her. What with this, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, and this year’s little-seen dramatic winner The Greatest, she shows she is, without a doubt, more than a one trick pony, and her stunning work in An Education is only the beginning of what I hope will be a decade-spanning career The rest of the cast is good (especially Knightley and the three children, Izzy Meikle-Small, Charlie Rowe, and Ella Purnell), but none are really given enough screen time. As for the supporting players, both Charlotte Rampling and Sally Hawkins have their moments and say things of utmost importance, but once again, their characters aren’t given enough to do in order to break through as fully as they should.

Even with all of this said, Never Let Me Go worked for me. While the final voiceover hits things a bit too on the nose, I felt for Kathy in ways that nearly ripped me apart.

I was swept up in her journey, captivated by her resilience, and shattered by the way society was treating her. Romanek may not be able to connect all the emotional dots, but he links just enough of them to make taking the journey worthwhile. While the finished film doesn’t quite latch on with the iron grip it needs to, it does leave a mark, and its ultimate beauty comes in a form I’m glad to have witnessed.

Nowhere Boy Opening October 8 You are going to hear a number of things about the new John Lennon biopic, Nowhere Boy. You are going to hear that Aaron Johnson is gorgeous and that he can act. You are going to hear that Kristin Scott Thomas and Anne-Marie Duff turn in notable performances as the two most important women in Lennon’s pre-Beatles life. And you are going to hear lascivious stories about a 40-something woman director nailing her hot 19-year-old male star. It’s all true.

Director Sam Taylor-Wood is a lucky lady, indeed. As has been said many times before, “There ain’t no flies on that boy.” Actually, though I’m envious of her dalliance, I’m reticent to cast her relationship with young Master Johnson in a tawdry light. First, Taylor-Wood is an award-winning and established video/photo artist who’s had numerous group and solo exhibitions all over the world. This type of thing should be expected. That’s how artists, uh, roll. Second, the couple is engaged to be married, and since we know how seriously breeders take marriage, this must be, uh, serious. Third, they had a baby girl, Wylda Rae, together on July 7 so obviously this wasn’t about the, uh, sex; this was about procreation.

Enough of all the silliness. Taylor-Wood proves she’s got the chops to direct a solid

Nancy Wilson flawless

by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer Nancy Wilson Mercy and Cuteness went to see Nancy Wilson at Jazz Alley last week. She and her combo of Lou Matthews (piano), John B. Williams (bass), and Roy McCurdy (drums) were flawless. Wilson has been performing for 55 years. She has gray hair that went well with her gray gown. Her experience shows in her comfort with every detail. Her face was expressive and her stylings apt in the wide range of songs she sang.

She opened with “Moondance.” Nancy commented, “I’ve been doing this longer than many of you are old.” She dedicated “I Wish I’d Met You” to her wonderful husband of 37 years.

Nancy said she sang “Take Love Easy” with the Dizzie Gillespie band. She added, “My rhythm section will make you forget all that,” and she was right. The same thing was true of “Don’t Go to Strangers.”

“Day In and Day Out” was nice and smooth. Wilson said, “I’m fortunate to have these gentlemen play with me.” Mercy and Cuteness agreed. Nancy has been playing with her drummer 29 years, and with her pianist for 23. As part of her introduction of the band, the bass player played a few notes of “Blame It On My Youth.” Wilson said, “That’s not fair,” but she complied with the challenge by singing the song.

“Guess Who I Saw Today, My Dear” had an effective surprise. Nancy talked about the first time she heard Bonnie Raitt sing “I Can’t Make You Love Me” with tears in her eyes. Wilson’s rendition almost put tears in Mercy’s. She followed with “How Long,” then joked she was going to do a fake bow because she didn’t want to go to the work of walking offstage then back on for her encore. “October” was a delicious ending.

Songs include Broadway selections by Sondheim and Rodgers and Hammerstein, original works, ballads by Holly Near, classic pieces like “Everything’s Possible,” and of course the rock number “We Are Family.”

Rainbow City Band Mercy is also looking forward to the Rainbow City Band (RCB) concert. It will be at 8 p.m. on October 16 at Edmonds Performance Hall, which is supposed to be a good venue. They will also perform Sunday, November 7, at 3 p.m. at Broadway Performance Hall.

The title of the concert is Enchanted: An Evening of Disney Magic. It will be a time of princes, Dalmatians, beauties, and beasts as they celebrate 80 years of Disney music. You’ll feel like a kid again as you hear “When You Wish Upon a Star.” The band will leave you breathless with the sweeping music of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” They will also explore the Disney of today with a suite of music from the movie Enchanted. You can explore your inner superhero with the music of The Incredibles (cape and matching boots optional.)

Nancy Wilson

Please, not another superb Carmen!

Séguin enlivens every note, and the camera gives you ample opportunity to enjoy his adorable face. (His name is pronounced “yah-NEEK neh-ZAY say-GUN.”) Roberto Alagna’s Don José is certainly adequate dramatically, although his rather forced singing is often slightly above the pitch, and his acting is not so compelling as Kaufmann’s. The two bullfighters are both excellent vocally and are as sexy as one could wish. The Met’s Escamillo is Teddy Tahu Rhodes. Likewise, both Micaëlas are entirely sufficient, with Barbara Frittoli filling her shoes at the Met. This Met DVD also boasts some fine extras in the form of backstage interviews by Renée Fleming with three of the singers, the conductor, and the choreographer, Christopher Wheeldon. His contribution is another plus, for the orchestral interludes seduce us with a very sexy pas de deux in which the muscular male dancer is topless and breathtaking! The Zambello disc from Covent Garden gives us no extras whatsoever but is available in Blu-ray.

You couldn’t go wrong with either of these discs. My preference is for the Covent Garden production, both because of the truly amazing Jonas Kaufmann and especially the detailed, gritty direction by Francesca Zambello. While I enjoy this Met DVD, Jonas Kaufmann made me care about Don José as I never have before. And Zambello kept my eyes on the screen every second.

This is embarrassing! I have written that Carmen is not even close to my favorite opera to see, and yet here I am writing to recommend a second DVD of that opera in less than two months.

Indeed, now you have two best-in-decades Carmen videos to chose from: Francesca Zambello’s brilliant production at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, with the spectacular tenor Jonas Kaufmann, and now an equally spectacular singer, Elīna Granča, singing Carmen in a production at the Met almost as good as Zambello’s. (This newer DVD is the same performance many of us saw in the Live in HD series at the local cinema.) What an amazing time we live in, to have such riches available for so little!

What makes this DVD a contender for your dollars is the stunning beauty, both physically and vocally, of Elīna Garanča.

In this, her first Carmen, she acts the part with utterly convincing realism, if somewhat less gripping than the earthy Anna Caterina Antonacci on the earlier DVD. But if you’re more interested in luscious vocalism, Garanča is the clear choice, simply because nature gave her the superior instrument.

They sing equally well.

Both videos are as good as it gets in sound and picture quality, although the newer Met DVD does not appear to be available in Blu-ray high definition. Both benefit from superb conducting. The Drums’ intense Stamps worth millions performance conquers at stake in Mauritius muddy sound

by Jessica Price SGN Contributing Writer The Drums October 4 Neumos I’m feeling a little conflicted about how to approach a review of The Drums’ appearance at Neumos last weekend. To say anything disparaging about four adorably sunny boys who met at summer camp and perform shimmering songs with titles like “Let’s Go Surfing” would be almost heartless – almost. I’ll save the criticism for a moment, and concentrate on the good.

The Brooklyn-by-way-of-Florida band came out swinging, playing their self-titled debut album almost in its entirety. The four scruffy hopefuls wasted no time launching into “Best Friend,” “Skippin’ Town,” and “Me and The Moon” as if on some kind of crazed, youthful adrenaline high. Vocalist Jonathan Pierce – in rolled-up jeans, hightop sneakers, and a red satin ‘80s jacket – could be a genetic mutation of Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, only adopting obvious Morrissey affectations with every other gesture (not exactly a bad thing). Stylistically, the band rides the line between Sixteen Candles and The Outsiders; one guitarist even sporting some saddle shoe oxfords. To their credit, the three core members (Pierce, guitarist Jacob Graham, drummer Connor

Hanwick) have written a near-perfect guitar pop record steeped in nostalgia but also disarmingly memorable. “Let’s Go Surfing” is the kind of song that instantly sticks in your brain for weeks on end, and it was gratifying to see it performed live if only to scratch that itch.

“It Will All End In Tears” and “Book of Stories” sagged a bit, as if the boys expended a little too much energy attempting to do the twist right out of the gate. The sound was muddy – annoying, considering the pristine clarity of the album. The trademark whistling parts were all pre-recorded, as were keyboards, leaving me wishing The Drums had tried harder to inventively translate the whistles and flourishes – perhaps with additional guitar parts. Creative deviation from studio recordings is often what makes a good band into a phenomenal live one.

However, The Drums delivered nonstop album hits (including “Down by the Water”), flirted with the pretty young audience, and their manic pop star energy waned only briefly. It’s hard to breathe easy when you’re one of the fastest-rising indie bands of 2010 (Pitchfork’s 2009 Readers’ Poll voted them “Best Hope for 2010,” and they’ve been NME darlings in the UK for the past year).

If The Drums can parlay that energy into their next album and stretch themselves live, they’ll leave the hype in tatters and create something truly surprising.

Jackie takes the album to a dealer Philip (Fullerton), who decides he’s sick of looking at bunches of stamp albums because people are convinced they’ve got something valuable. Another man, Dennis (Murray), who says he’s not an expert, looks at it for Jackie and initially tells her that she has nothing of value. It turns out that he found stamps made for the island of Mauritius that are the “crown jewels of philately” and potentially worth millions. He didn’t want to let on to her that she had such valuable stamps.

Dennis sets Jackie up with Sterling (McCarthy), a buyer who is well aware of the rarity of the find and is salivating to get his hands on the prize.

But what about Mary and her claim? Jackie clearly doesn’t care if she sells something that doesn’t quite belong to her.

There are many twists and turns before the end of the play, and a great monologue delivered

by Sterling about the art of the “deal” and the different levels of interference that lawyers and tax collectors might impose if Jackie doesn’t take his offer – the monologue sounds like business poetry. The mystery is well set up as to how much will be paid for the stamps and if the deal will go through.

The main theme of the play is “worth” – self-worth, as in esteem, and what a family relationship is worth, and how much should be paid for the stamps themselves. Jackie longs for a new life and hints (remember, that’s all we get) at the hardships she’s had to face up till now. The stamps have different amounts of “worth” to each of the other characters. Mary almost doesn’t want to sell the stamps since they are all she has left of a grandfather who raised her. The stamp guys all want a piece of stamp history. The ambiguous ending leaves the worth of the evening up to you to determine.

Mauritius Seattle Public Theater Through October 24 What does the island of Mauritius have to do with stamp collecting? You get to find that out by attending the current production at Seattle Public Theater. This play, by Theresa Rebeck, focuses on a pair of half-sisters who barely know each other and who end up fighting over who owns the inherited stamp collection.

The production is tightly directed by Russ Banham with five strong performers: Mark Fullerton, Heather Hawkins, Joseph P. McCarthy, Carolyn Marie Monroe, and John Murray.

Sisters Jackie (Monroe) and Mary (Hawkins) haven’t seen each other for years and Mary, the older sister, finally comes back when her mother has died. Rebeck’s characters are strongly drawn, but the script does present some fairly large holes that end up needing filling in by an audience member to make sense. The sisters, for instance, clearly have a lot of pain between them, but their lives are unrevealed. At one point, Jackie actually starts to explain what happened, and then gets interrupted and never finishes. That’s a weirdly frustrating aspect of the play, and we end up making up our own story about how these women end up as clearly damaged as they are.

September 30 Re-bar On September 30, The Producer’s Collective, a local organization of Queer and allied artists, put on one of their biggest shows yet, Superheroes are So Gay! A Dynamite Queer Variety Show at Re-bar (1114 Howell St.) The variety show featured burlesque, drag, film, and live music and served as a fundraiser for Pinay sa Seattle, a local women’s organization.

“We have a really, really amazing group of superheroes who are going to show you how Gay they are,” said Spike, the emcee, at the beginning of the show, to a packed house.

Highlights of the show included Last of the RedHot Mamas; a collaborative band created by poet and singer Amber Flame; a silent short film entitled Robin Hood Is So Gay by local filmmaker Broch Bender; Randy Andy, a drag King who utilized the art of boylesque onstage and made out with a girl in a penis costume; and of course, the

headliner, Aleksa Manila, who performed a very unique number.

Suffice to say, I’ve seen “the thrilla from Manila” do many things, but I’d never seen her tie someone up onstage, pour hot wax on them, and then lick it off.

Additionally, the beneficiaries of the show, Pinay sa Seattle, put on a burlesque act that included more glitter than I’ve ever seen in my life.

“It really felt so community-focused and fun,” said The Producer’s Collective. “This is exactly what we’ve been hoping for.”

The Producer’s Collective strives to bring a collage of Queer art on stage from film, music, dance, drag, spoken word, bands, theater, burlesque, draglesque, and boylesque that comes from liberatory values. They want to create an artist and producer community that values social justice, camp, and diversity.

Cherdonna and Lou began working together in Seattle in 2004. They soon discovered a synergy of comedic timing and a shared passion for character-driven movement (Think Jack Tripper – in drag – on Three’s Company). The two created the Cherdonna and Lou Show to combine their chorographical backgrounds with their desire to create comedic politicized and personal performance. They merge movement as the impetus for character development with the artifice of drag to reveal something true.

In the case of It’s A Salon!, the drag-dance duo hosts an evening of one-way conversations about art, party games, and supernatural moments. Cherdonna, the lady of the house, seems to want everything to go just right – though the contrary seems to happen around every turn. From broken champagne bottles to a fight with Lou, the man of the house, over an electric guitar amplifier, the couple represents the truth behind the modern American family where everything, no matter how good or bad, is swept under the rug – literally.

All artsy-fartsy talk aside, the two give a stunning physical performance, as would be expected for the duo. The size difference between the two is funny enough; Cherdonna towers over Lou as they dance, fight, and sing their way into your comedic heart.

The dramatic pieces in the show are a bit uneasy. There are long pauses and ice-cold glares from Cherdonna to Lou or vice-versa, but it works. They recreate a living room set – with a god-awful number of old lamps – where it is clear when you are supposed to feel uncomfortable and when you are supposed to laugh.

I wouldn’t dare give away the surprises (of which there are many), but I would advise that if you know how to play the guitar, raise your hand, and if you like to be thoroughly entertained, buy a ticket. It’s A Salon! promises to be unlike anything you have seen, and you will walk away feeling like art and dance are well and intact in Seattle thanks continued from cover to Cherdonna and Lou.

“So many of my memories as a DJ are based around the people I meet and the things I see or hear,” he said. “2010 has had some memorable moments, with the remix work for Inaya Day landing in the top 25 for the Gay Days DJ competition and becoming a resident DJ at the Cuff and on Strictly Dance Radio.”

Almond says he is involved in a lot of production work. “I have a lot of exciting releases coming up,” he said. “I have another new track with Inaya Day coming out before the year ends. I’m also working on an original track for my new label with Lamont Wheat and with another house legend Xaivera Gold. Club Nouveau is releasing a 25-year discography and I’ll have a house version of ‘Rumours’ on it.”

One thing’s for sure: With DJ Almond Brown in the booth, you are gonna dance, dance all night long.

The story is definitely familiar, exploring such topics as cultural traditions, parents wanting better for their children, reaching for your dreams, and trying to find oneself in a bustling world, but this unique, original method in which the story is told is what makes the show such a success.

Taking place in New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood (located in north Manhattan), the show’s setting is of tenement buildings and a distant view of the George Washington Bridge. It is morning and the day is about to start for this mainly Latino neighborhood. Usnavi opens his bodega and introduces us to his neighbors and their lives. The salon next door is run

by Vanessa (Usnavi’s romantic interest), Daniela, and Carla, and is where women gather to gossip. The next-door limousine rental/dispatch service, run by Kevin, his wife Camila and their hired help Benny is celebrating because Kevin/Camila’s daughter, Nina, is coming home from Stanford College. What the parents don’t know is that Nina has dropped out. “I love the flexibility of being a DJ,” said Almond. “I sang with bands for most of my musical career and we had a set number of songs that we would do. With many of the bands I was in, a lot of the songs were choreographed and fine-tuned for a particular time in the night or room. So much of my DJ set preparation is based on my learnings as a musician, but the immediate access, and option to pivot on any given song from a pool of hundreds of songs, is real cute.”

DJ Almond Brown says that as a Gay DJ of color, he realizes that he has the unique ability to make a statement. “With Puppy’s help at the Cuff, I have helped to dispel the rumors of bias and created one of the most popular nights in the venue,” he said. “I’m receiving a lot of visibility lately and I think it’s mainly around that I am different in appearance, sound, and overall presentation.

There are a lot of talented people of color in our community and unfortunately we are rarely represented in our local events.

But I always say, ‘A closed mouth don’t get fed,’ so if you want to be heard, make some noise.”

Almond says he wants to take his brand of music national and create an identity and sound that is not based on Top 40 expectation. “I won’t play Lady Gaga again,” he joked.

The popular DJ says that his view of Neighbours Nightclub, where is new set is scheduled to start, is that of a lot of guys in his demographic – there are a lot of women on the dance floor. “The increasing number of women in the Gay clubs is being felt everywhere, and that’s fine,” he said, “as long

Far too often this is overlooked and there is suffering because people neglect their fellow man and imprison the human condition of others with name-calling. We all know our differences, but the ability to move beyond them is the turning point for working against one another or working with one another. It just depends on the world we want and the world we wish to leave as our legacy.”

Featured in SWC’s production are parts of Rosie O’Donnell’s heartwarming HBO documentary film A Family Is a Family Is a Family, which humorously features children’s own thoughts and words. the reigns on this small community as her own personal schoolroom, educating others and highly endeared to those around her.

The musical’s main character and narrator Usnavi (played by Joseph Morales) does a good job of introducing us to the neighborhood through song, but the lyrics are a little difficult to understand until the ear gets familiar with the hip-hop/rap style. The main female character Nina (played by Arielle Jacobs) has a very strong voice. Last seen in Seattle as Gabrielle, the lead in High School Musical, Ms. Jacobs has grown a great deal and fills out a more adult role without any problems. In fact, all the women in the show have great voices. When the females are given their chances to shine, they belt it out, ringing the rafters and amplifying the auditorium.

Two of the important features of this show are the music and the choreography. The music (written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also starred in the original production) blends together several different modern and traditional styles. The first act is more focused on the hip-hop/rap/salsa flavors, but the music tends to get a little too loud, which makes it difficult to understand the lyrics.

In a show like this, the lyrics are just as important as any character on the stage. The second act seems to blend more traditional Broadway styles, which was the exact intent of the composer/lyricist. The choreography (by Andy Blankenbuehler) is fantastic! It puts on the correct amounts of Latino dance mixed with street dancing, all the while not forgetting that it is still a Broadway production. The dancers move about on stage with a realistic sensuality that seems to come from the heart.

In the Heights was originally produced on Broadway in the 2008 theater season and immediately became a hit. Nominated for 13 Tony Awards (as well as the prestigious 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Drama), the musical won four Tonys including Best Musical and Best Choreography. The musical also won a 2009 Grammy Award for its Original Cast Album. Famous previous residents of Washington Heights include Maria Callas, Laurence Fishburne, Lou Gehrig, Henry Kissinger, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and TAKI 183, one of the originators of New York graffiti – a person that is given a nod to in the show. While the music keeps the audience wanting to move, it is the story line that they will take away with them. There is definitely something everyone can identify with in the Nuevo-classic style of the Broadway musical.
