Betty Buckley, cabaret cowgirl Rufus on straight men, and Seattle Men’s Chorus short list of questions. Because of a very busy schedule, it wasn’t the easiest thing getting Wainwright on the phone – even for a quick seven minutes – but a little history goes a long way.

In one of my first assignments as a music reporter, I interviewed this genius singersongwriter just before he came to town and performed to a halffilled room at the former Crocodile Cafe. Since then, he’s sold out every concert in each venue he’s played at in Seattle, including The Triple Door and the Paramount Theatre.

We’re talking about a maverick here, an artist with such unique vision and flair that his albums, such as Poses or Want One/Two come across like mini-stage productions

Eric Andrews-Katz: You were born in Fort Worth, Texas, and trained yourself to sing by listening to recordings. Who were the women that inspired you?

Betty Lynn Buckley: Actually, I was born in Big Spring, Texas and my family settled in Fort Worth. I sang as a child in church, but my mother had a great collection of

Betty Buckley has been a Texas beauty queen, a Tony Award winner, was nominated twice for the Grammy Award and shows cutting horses at her ranch in Texas.

Her films include Tender Mercies and Carrie (as the gym teacher), among others. Most people will recognize her as Abby, the stepmother in the sitcom series Eight is Enough or from introducing the song “Memory” from Cats. When not at her ranch, Ms. Buckley performs concerts ranging from intimate cabarets to Carnegie Hall.

To celebrate the Seattle Men’s Chorus’ 30th Anniversary, Ms. Buckley will be the special guest star for their holiday concert, Santa Baby. In preparation, Ms. Buckley gave a phone interview to one of her most supportive fans.

The Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival (SLGFF) wrapped up its 14th year on October 25 after a stellar run featuring unique and edgy stories told on 11 screens throughout Seattle. SLGFF, produced by local nonprofit Three Dollar Bill Cinema, is well-known for offering the best in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender film and video. The festival’s juried and audience awards have been announced.

explicate the narrative. The photography by Anthony Dod Mantle (Slumdog Millionaire and 28 Days Later, among other cool stuff) is lovely whether capturing a tragic moment set in a mundane apartment or sifting through the disparities of reality and perception in a post-Freudian (anti-Freudian?) psychosexual landscape.

The acting is first-rate. Gainsbourg’s courageous performance unfolds slowly with devastating results. Defoe is nicely understated as the father who smothers his own journey of grief beneath his desire to help his partner overcome her demons.

Antichrist is a horror film and it does not stray far from its roots. The biggest difference between this film and so many other contemporary horror films, films that might be gross but are rarely frightening, is in von Trier’s insistence on connecting the violent fantasy to the familiar. He takes us into the safest place there is, the arms of the mother.

He then takes us inside the philosophical womb to uncompromisingly question the gendering of nature forcing us to consider the earth as a violent place without any connection to humanity’s version of God or reason. The earth is mother, and mother is not so nice. This is scary stuff that makes for an awesome horror flick.

It seems von Trier willingly embraces the heavier intellectual weight of Antichrist with his dedication of the film to Andrei Tarkovsky in the ending credits. To purloin Senator Lloyd Bentsen’s brilliant verbal volley directed at Dan Quayle in 1988: I know Tarkovsky. Tarkovsky is a friend of mine.

Mr. von Trier, you’re no Tarkovsky. Not yet, anyway.

That’s not to say that von Trier is not a brilliant filmmaker. Anyone who’s witnessed the last 20 minutes of Dancer in the Dark or endured the graceful sense of sacrifice and love in Breaking the Waves knows he is gifted. I just think comparisons to Tarkovsky are premature and ours to make, not his. But I’m a jealous (and petty) critic, and a director may dedicate his film to whomever he wishes in the end.

Antichrist is an amazing movie from a filmmaker with an agenda. Lars von Trier is a purposeful filmmaker (if you read my reviews regularly, you know this is high praise) and he’s not messing around, even if he’s messing with us. He may even become legendary, like Tarkovsky. We’ll see.

Then she screams at the kid through smoke-ravaged vocal cords, “What the hell is your problem?! Drop the cigarettes and stay the hell out of my bag. I paid a lot of money for it and if I catch you in it one more time I’ll slap your face into next week! Do you hear me?!”

The kid looks at her blankly while awkwardly stuffing another handful of Doritos into his mouth.

We’ve all been there. Standing there thinking, “she must be the shittiest mom in the world.” Well, the bar has just been lowered.

Antichrist, the new film by Lars von Trier (Dancer in the Dark and Breaking the Waves), opens as a child dies while his

parents have sex. The grieving mother (brilliantly played by Charlotte Gainsbourg) crumbles and is hospitalized. The grieving father (Willem Defoe – always good) becomes her de facto psychoanalyst. After the mother is released from the hospital, the couple decides to retreat to their idyllic cabin in the temperate rainforest to seek the healing power of a benevolent mother nature. Unfortunately, nature, environmentally and emotionally, turns out to be more like Tennyson’s unreasonable beast, all red in tooth and claw than the patchouli-laced image of Gaia we all know from tree-hugger bumper stickers.

Lars von Trier is no stranger to difficult cinema. Difficult, in von Trier’s case, could refer to the filmmaker manifesto, Dogme 95, and its rigid filmmaking requirements known as the Dogme 95 Vow of Chastity.

Difficult could also mean “tough to watch,” as in characters in situations that offer devastating choices laced with moral ambiguity.

Difficult can be a good thing, cinematically speaking.

Antichrist is a difficult film. In fact, the sentence you’ve just read is a fantastic understatement and I’m not exaggerating when I say Antichrist, made by the genre-jumping director from Denmark, is one of the scariest horror films I’ve ever seen.

This is pure horror, but with a heavy dose of intellectual overreaching and artistic integrity tossed in. If you don’t run from the theater dizzy with nausea and cold sweat, you’ll have something to ponder for a few days – or longer. This is the story of the bad mother, and there’s nothing scarier than the bad mother.

I don’t want to give too much away, but if you’re a film geek like me, you’ve already read the worst. If you’re not a film geek like me, you still don’t deserve to have the most controversial moments spoiled. So, SPOILER ALERT. Stop reading if you don’t want to know.

Willem Defoe gets his junk smashed, has a bloody orgasm, and his wife then proceeds to cut off her clitoris with a rusty pair of scissors – in close-up. On the big screen. Are we done being shocked? Good, then let’s continue the review of the film.

Forget the Dogme 95 Vow of Chastity; von Trier is using every cinematic trick there is here, and to good effect. The images are hauntingly beautiful and work perfectly to

Celebrating 36 Years!

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN Contributing Writer August: Osage County Paramount Theatre October 27 - November 1 “Truth!” exclaims matriarch Violet Weston. “Truth!” But truth comes with a price, and that price is often too high to pay for the members of the family in August: Osage County. The Tony Award-winning play (Best Play, 2008) by Tracy Letts is not so much about an ideal American family as it is about the disintegration of the American family. The play is labeled as a dark dramedy, but the emphasis is on the dark. Despite the slower pace for character building, the three and one-half-hour show (with two 10-minute intermissions) will fly by quickly. You won’t have time to look at your watch as the one-line barbs and acid comments race by faster than the grand prix, and the creatures here have all pulled out the claws and sharpened their tongues.

With the unexpected death of their father, the three Weston sisters (Barbara, the eldest, Ivy, the middle, and Karen, the youngest) reluctantly come together for the funeral.

Each of them is dreading having to deal with their pill-popping mother, Violet, and the family bands together only to be torn apart from within. Secrets are revealed, including alcoholism, pill addiction, incest and molestation, and those are just the appetizers at this destructive dinner.

Estelle Parsons (from TV’s Roseanne), recreating her Broadway role, plays the vicious matriarch Violet. Addicted to a long line of prescriptions, she watches everything through glazed-over eyes, though her sharp mind is ready for battle. She sits with patience, like a trapdoor spider, waiting for the right moment to strike out with poisonous precision and then watch as her victim struggles within the acidic confines.

Ms. Parsons’ character is far from the shrill mother forever caught in TV Land; she plays Violet with the strength of a wildcat.

This character demands from the audience a scary type of sympathy and it is the sympathy for a widowed praying mantis.

Shannon Cochran plays the eldest daughter, Barbara, a woman with a husband (played by Jeff Still) and a 14-year-old daughter (played by Emily Kinney) who has her hands full with her father’s death, her mother’s addiction, and her own marriage, which is falling apart. Barbara is the real center of the play as she flounders between rebelling against her parents’ behavior while trying not to become them in turn. Ms. Cochran portrays a good range, whether she is striking out at her mother with verbal or physical attacks or trying to shield her sisters from one of the ugly truths that come to light.

Middle daughter Ivy (played by Angelica Torn) starts off as the mousey, “obligated” daughter that stays behind to help take care of her parents. She tries to hide her love affair from her toxic mother, only to have her dreams destroyed before her eyes. The youngest daughter, Karen (played by Amy Warren), only wants to find true love, a mission she feels she accomplishes with her fiancé Steve (played by Laurence Lau).

But even the youngest child doesn’t escape without having truths brought before her and must decide whether her desires for happiness can cover the dark secrets that follow.

The play’s scenery is beautiful. It’s a large house that shows the built layers of the American Dream as it symbolically comes crashing down on its inhabitants. Depending on your theater seat, some scenes may be a little difficult to see, but that’s because the staging is large and sprawling, much like the style of house in which it is set. At times the microphones went out, but the actors are accomplished at projecting their voices and

Dark drama August: Osage County brings the truth

I never missed a word. There were a couple of scenes that were awkwardly staged, but during most of the group scenes, people flowed about the house without stealing focus. When conversation, dialogue or even screaming arguments overlapped each other, important lines were still able to be heard and picked up by the audience; that shows the talents of a group of people that work well together.

Despite the heaviness of the subject matter, there are laughable moments that are intended to alleviate some of the tension. The humor comes at twisted moments, sometimes even uncomfortable ones, but there is

enough of it to give a certain balance to the teetering family. There are more laughs than one might expect, which prevents the show from becoming lost among the works of Ibsen, O’Neill or other dramatic playwrights.

There is an undertone of Tennessee Williams here, but with more laughter, and instead of the sultry South, this dysfunctional family is set on the Oklahoma plains.

August: Osage County opened on Broadway October 30, 2007 and ran for over 648 performances. It was nominated for seven Tony Awards and won five while having two actresses nominated simultaneously in the Best Actress category.

men was in drag, giving his interactions with the woman Lesbian possibilities. It was a good setting of J. S. Bach’s “Violin Concerto in A minor.” The dance was well-timed.

The third dance, “Bitter Suite,” was choreographed by Finnish choreographer Jorma Elo. The first half was set to Felix Mendelssohn’s “Violin Concerto in E minor.” The movements in this section have a mechanical feeling at first, reminiscent of toy soldiers or war games. It develops into manipulative sexual interactions. All the dancers wound up on the floor at the end of that part. The second half was set to Claudio Monteverdi’s “Pur Ti Miro” from L’incoronazione di Poppaea. The dancers rose from the floor and danced to the joyful music more smoothly. The dancers beautifully met the challenge of the range of motions the choreography required.

“Gnawa,” the fourth piece, was set by the Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato to Spanish and North African sounds from a variety of evocative sources. The dance was delicious in its expression of the music’s spirituality. The dancers seemed to fly together with exquisite precision. The whole company danced in this piece.

The audience gave the group a long, hearty standing ovation and many well-deserved bravos.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago Paramount Theatre October 23 The Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (HSDC) took the Paramount Theatre by storm last week. The group is newly under the leadership of Glenn Edgerton as artistic director, formerly mentored by Robert Joffrey. They showed the excellence that makes them so esteemed worldwide. The dancers filled the stage from the floor to the air with an incredible variety of movements. HSDC stands out from their peers in that they are not tied to the work of a single choreographer but are a repertory company, working with numerous choreographers.

The first piece they did, “Lickety-Split,” was choreographed by Alejandro Cerrudo, who is also a member of the company. It was set to the luscious voice of Bay-Area songwriter Devendra Banhart. The songs were “A Sight to Behold,” “This Beard Is For Siobhan,” and “Tit Smoking in the Temple of Artisan Mimicry.” Three couples danced a range of sensual, fluid pas de deuxs. The dance had some nice surprise twists in the romance. The dancers were lithe and confident.

“The Set,” the second piece, was choreographed by Lucas Crandall and was a collaboration with Dirk Denison’s 2007 Architecture Studio. It is an example of the partnerships HSDC is noted for establishing with other artists and art organizations in their hometown of Chicago. What stands out about the dance is how creatively it uses the sofa that it is danced on. It tells the story of two men competing for a woman on a couch. At one point, a dancer picks up one end of the divan and slides the other two down it.

The piece consisted of intense flirtatiousness and playful acrobatic movements. The costumes were Victorian, and one of the

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Measure for Pleasure ArtsWest Through November 14 If there are characters named Sir Lustforth, Lady Vanity and Molly Tawdry, what kind of play might this be? A sex romp. That’s what’s going on this month at ArtsWest as they present Measure for Pleasure by David Grimm. This is not your father’s sex romp, however, since Molly Tawdry is a cross-dressing, homosexual hooker. The action takes place, as it says in the program, in 1751, and so does the language, but the sentiment is purely 2000s. In fact, the characters occasionally slide all the way from 1751 to 2009.

Sir Peter Lustforth (Paul Custodio) doesn’t think he loves his wife, Lady Vanity Lustforth (Heather Hawkins), anymore and thinks he should divorce her and marry Hermione Goode (Colleen Robertson), a woman some million years his junior. Captain Dick Dashwood (Jared Michael Brown) is also enamored with Hermione, and even though he’s a cad and a serial non-monogamist, Hermione seems to be enamored with him back. The Lustforth family has a servant, Will Blunt (Zach Adair), who finds himself in love with Molly Tawdry (Alex Garnett), the cross-dressing hooker, but Molly refuses to believe that it’s a real love. Blunt determines to show him/her that he really does love her/him.

There’s also an orgy and some leather

and a riding crop and some over-the-top costuming by Sarah Lee Day, who seems to think that there are never enough feather boas. The extravagant set by Dan Schuy has yards and yards and yards and yards of rich-looking white fabric, topped with adorable cherubs and hung between columns.

These curtains ingeniously open and close on their own, revealing or hiding characters as needed. There is some great period music chosen for scene changes by sound designer Andrew Chin. Christopher Zinovitch directs the non-speaking servants and chambermaid to create a lot of fun incidental business and add to the bawdy atmosphere.

The antics and plans of the servant Blunt take a large chunk of the focus, as Blunt tries to show his love for Molly by dressing up like a fop and challenging Molly’s crush, Dick Dashwood, to a duel. Adair handles the role very well, though he loses focus at times. However, when the emotional climax (not that climax!) occurs, he brings a likable sadness into the role.

The heart of the play is Lady Lustforth, who begins the play with a blind enthusiasm that indicates she believes everything she says about herself, then has a wonderful moment of clarity and truth about who she is and how she really feels. Hawkins gives her all with an affecting manner, but also shows why she stays with and puts up with the kind of husband that she has.

Andrews-Katz: Your first day in New York, you auditioned for the musical 1776, originating the role of Martha Jefferson.

What do you remember most from that audition?

Buckley: It was really thrilling. They kept me there for hours, teaching me the songs and reading scenes. They thought I was funny because of my thick Texas accent. I kept mispronouncing the words. It amused them and that helped me get the part.

Andrews-Katz: You were in both the hit

movie Carrie and the much less successful stage musical version. What went wrong with the musical and why has it reached such legendary status?

Buckley: There was a problem with style.

In the selections of the mother/daughter scenes and numbers we were doing one style of work and the rest of the show was in another style. I don’t think the directors had a feeling for the Americana nature of the story, nor the right milieu of the play. Currently, they are doing a new workshop of the show so, we’ll see if they get the vision they want for it.

Andrews-Katz: Signature songs can be a blessing and a curse. What experiences have you encountered with “Memory” from Cats?

Buckley: It’s only been a blessing. The song is just such a beautiful piece of poetry

written by Trevor Nunn. It’s the only one not written by T.S. Elliot. It’s such a universal piece of poetry. The character Grizabella [the Glamour Cat] is like one of my dearest friends; she continues to teach me very beautiful things about life.

Andrews-Katz: If you could choose any song what song would you want to be your signature?

Buckley: “Memory.” No second thoughts.

Andrews-Katz: I’d like to thank you for all the work you’ve done with the Gay Men’s Health Crisis. You’ve done extensive work for many years and helped to raise a lot of money. How did you get involved with the GMHC? Buckley: I was doing work with “Broadway Cares Equity Fights AIDS” and got involved through them.

Andrews-Katz: Do you prefer a grand or more intimate concert venue, and why?

Buckley: I prefer an intimate venue when I work with a small ensemble of musicians or just with a pianist. When I work with an orchestra, I prefer a bigger venue, like Benaroya Hall – I really like Benaroya Hall.

Andrews-Katz: When you plan out a concert menu, what kind of music do you prefer to sing?

Buckley: It’s not about a kind of music; it’s more about the song itself. I look for songs that have beautiful lyrics, that are visually sumptuous or where the character speaks through a song, describing something that resonates from the present moment. As I continue to grow and evolve, I’m always looking for songs that speak to the immediate nature of my experience. It’s like trying on clothes to see if they fit.

Andrews-Katz: You’ll be singing with the Seattle Men’s Chorus for their 30th year holiday celebration. What holiday magic will you be sharing with Seattle audiences?

Buckley: I’ll be coming with my pianist, Kenny Werner [a 20-year collaborator].

We’ve done several Christmas concerts in the past and take the music that we love and improvise with those songs. We’ve been asked to do a few songs, so we’ll pick from our favorites for the concert.

Andrews-Katz: Most people don’t know that you own, ride and compete show horses. How does your cowgirl lifestyle balance your hectic show business career?

Buckley: I wish I got around to it much earlier in life. I’ve always loved horses and

rode them when I was a kid. I put it on the back burner in favor of studying and working for show business opportunities. After 9/11, I got back to the equine sport of cutting horses. Cutting horses are bred to herd cows like border collies do with sheep. It’s a very thrilling and beautiful sport to watch.

Now I have four horses: two for show, and a mare with a five-month-old filly. When Bit o’ Honey Boon [the filly] is three years old, she will be the 2012 futurity champion – at least, that’s what I tell her. I feel like “Mama Rose” coaching her on every day.

Andrews-Katz: With awards in stage, film, television and now horse showing, what do you plan to do next?

Buckley: Right now I have a bunch of concerts coming up. There’s one in Boston, where I’ll be lecturing at Boston University.

Betty Buckley has twice been nominated for the Drama Desk and Tony Awards (for Triumph of Love and Cats), winning the Tony in 1983 for Grizabella, the Glamour Cat. Crediting Bob Fosse’s choreography in The Pajama Game as being the start of a love relationship with the theater, Ms. Buckley’s career on stage has included Sunset Boulevard, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Pippin and Carrie, a musical that has achieved legendary status. Her other credits include more than eight solo CDs, lead roles in the films Carrie, Tender Mercies, Frantic and The Happening. She also played a reoccurring character on the HBO series OZ. The Seattle Men’s Chorus is celebrating its 30th year anniversary. Their first concert was June 1980 and held at the Museum of History and Industry. In 1981, Chet Forward stepped in as co-conductor with Dennis Coleman, who was known as a minister of music for a Baptist church. With Mr. Coleman at the helm, the chorus has a 15-listing discography and has had such guest stars as Harvey Fierstein, Nell Carter, Faith Prince, Lucy Lawless, Michael Feinstein, Rosemary Clooney and last year’s Debbie Reynolds.

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer Obama On My Mind Langston Hughes Cultural Arts CentER Through November 15 Sitting with the nearly overflow crowd at the Langston Hughes Cultural Arts Center last weekend, watching the mild spectacle that is Obama On My Mind, the new musical comedy by Teddy Hayes, I had to wonder: Is this too soon?

With his first year not quite over, Obama is already in hot water over the economy, his “slow but steady wins the race” attitude on GLBT issues, and his difficulty making all sides happy about his troop withdrawal policies. The question is legitimate, I think.

Is it too soon to have a musical comedy about a behind-the-scenes look at one small campaign office’s ups and downs? Maybe, with so many conservatives pointing fingers at Obama and the sparkle dimming a bit on that winning smile, this show is right on time.

Either way, the show itself, judged on its own merits – never mind the timely subject matter – is at least entertaining to watch, even if a bit uneven in places. Directed by veteran Langston Hughes go-getter Jacqueline Moscou, the actors more than rise to the occasion of performing their varied parts of campaign groupies/office hands. True, some of the characters – particularly Ryan Blackwell’s snotty token Gay man and Valerie Meneses’ heavily accented Latina – are a bit difficult to swallow, as they’re more caricatures of these important voting blocs than realistic portrayals. But in this easy-tolike show, a little bit of hamming it up can

be forgiven.

Most likeable are some of the singing/ dancing numbers, particularly Demene Hall’s funny and embarrassingly obsessive portrayal of Mad Mary, the eternal campaigner, who’s determined that, this time, her candidate’s going to take the prize – with her help, of course.

Also delightful were Bob Williams’ sharply witty number “Somebody Important,” and pretty, perky Annie Jantzer’s sexy “Telephone Call,” done like a burlesque – which, in light of recent political scandals, seems very appropriate. But the number that brought down the house was bluesy Josephine Howell’s “Obama On My Mind,” both the first time and the number’s reprise at the end of the show, which had audience members clapping and cheering as if the show were an actual rally and Obama was just now getting elected at the first black president of the United States.

Bottom line: Even though the show could use a bit of work in the first half, it’s a good effort, and doesn’t stop it from being a good show to watch. Hopefully, the show will get to travel and in the process will smooth out some of the tiny wrinkles that keep it from being absolutely brilliant. I loved the eagerness with which the actors approached their roles and how genuine they seemed, even if they knew they were reaching a bit over the top for some of the laughs. I almost wish President Obama could see this show (as he does in the show itself, in one segment), if only to reassure him that no matter what’s being said by the naysayers, he still has the heart of his voters, the ones who put him in the White House in the first place.

Obama musical entertaining, if uneven

Obama On My Mind

a new adaptation that brings to life the 19thcentury mores of Austen’s world. The visual feast provided by Andrea Bush’s spare but elegant set, with graceful chandeliers and ribbon, and Deane Middleton’s wonderful costumes sumptuously sets the table for a delightful production.

Emma Woodhouse is a headstrong young woman who believes in her own infallibility, a character flaw that Austen exploits to demonstrate the folly of trying to manipulate other lives. As embodied by Sylvie Davidson, all of Emma’s willfulness and stubborn imagination are in full display. Emma likes to arrange marriages and fancies herself the perfect matchmaker, having decided she set her governess up for that current happy marriage.

Watching with a jaundiced eye is her brother-by-marriage, Mr. Knightley (no first name), whose brother married Emma’s older sister. Knightley, played with a supercilious condescension by Dylan Chalfy, has known Emma since she was preteen, and tries to warn her off of her meddling ways.

He foresees her downfall, though his advice is unheeded and he is treated as a meddling brother. Of course, the audience knows that ultimately he is perfect for Emma, though she does not yet realize it, and feels content to remain unmarried herself.

Emma undertakes a project with Harriet Smith, a young woman of uncertain background, and decides Smith should wed the local parson, Mr. Elton (again, no first name). Harriet (hilariously played by Ashley Marshall, who practically steals every scene she’s in) and Elton (another archly awful character played wonderfully by John Bianchi) are completely incompatible.

Emma convinces Harriet she should not marry the farmer, Mr. Martin, who Harriet really should marry. Harriet is convinced to have feelings first for Mr. Elton and then, when he spurns her, she thinks she’s in love with Mr. Knightley (to Emma’s dismay).

A subplot involves another couple, Frank Churchill (Daniel Brockley) and Jane Fairfax (Nicole Fierstein) who are secretly engaged, yet pretend not to be interested in each other. Jane lives with her aunt Miss Bates (a grovellingly, awkwardly fun Samantha Wykes) and her mother Mrs. Bates

(Betty Gard, who proves there are no small parts). Emma flirts with Churchill as he flirts back, but never really feeling attraction to him, to the relief of all when the secret comes out.

Also a huge scene-stealer when she enters the play, Emily Grogan (who played Jane in Pride and Prejudice) plays Mrs. Elton, the upper crust, insecure bully who marries the parson and tries to control everyone. Her character is very like the Penelope character on Saturday Night Live, who tries to one-up everyone no matter how absurd it becomes.

Director Marcus Goodwin gets good mileage out of the humorous situations and keeps the caricatures tightly reined in, maximizing the comic situation. One might quibble with creating “theater in the round” since it made for some awkwardness that was unnecessary, and made it hard for some audience members to hear everything, but conceptually, Emma at the center of the storm swirling around her is a good foundation. There are a couple of choice bits of fun, such as Emma and Elton taking a very bumpy carriage ride, where Emma is forced to endure his protestations of love.

The play’s simple moral propels to a wellknown happy ending, and Emma realizes how wrong she has been. Fortunately, all her meddling has ended up with no one really having to suffer by marrying the wrong person.

Theatre Puget Sound honors artistic achievement

When I first heard about the release of Sainthood, the new album by Tegan and Sara released earlier this week, October 27, I thought to myself, “Already?” Tegan and Sara never fail to reinvent their sound with each release, and Sainthood has the same love-laced lyrical flow that keeps fans coming back for more. Lyrically, the album is as good as ever, but musically, the album is mediocre at best.

If I hadn’t been listening to Tegan and Sara since the album If It Was You (2002), I would have guessed that Sainthood was their first album. Aside from a few things of note, it seems amateur, rushed and ultimately unperfected.

Sainthood is produced by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) and Tegan and Sara and is released on Sire Records. About half of Sainthood was recorded here in Seattle at Two Sticks Audio, during the summer of 2009. The album runs 37:15.

If you’re a Tegan fan or a Sara fan, it really won’t matter with Sainthood. The 13-track album has six songs written by Sara, six written by Tegan, as well as one written by the both of them.

The first four songs are really the only parts of Sainthood worth getting excited for.

“Arrow” (Sara) is all right – it’s certainly well written, but still doesn’t measure up to the sound on any track from The Con. “Don’t Rush” (Tegan) flows nicely, better than almost everything else on the album.

“Hell” (Tegan) is also simply “all right.”

“On Directing” by Sara is probably the highlight of the album. It is easily the most reminiscent of The Con. No track after the first four is anything special.

If you’re a hardcore fan, check the album out, but don’t waste your money on the vinyl. Sainthood is by no means an album to be “experienced;” it’s merely worth a listen.

If you’re just a casual Tegan and Sara fan, skip this one altogether.

Celebrating 36 Years!

by James Whitely SGN Contributing Writer Ani DiFranco Moore Theatre October 24 Ani DiFranco’s talent is far-reaching.

Sure, she has her legion of concert-going fans, but her music speaks to most anyone. I am consistently – not to mention pleasantly – surprised to hear people mention her and speak about how talented she is, whether or not they consider themselves fans. But on October 24, when she played the Moore Theatre here in Seattle, all her die-hard fans were there, and they loved every minute of the nearly two-hour show.

After the first song, Ani removed her sweater for the performance, which sent the die-hards into a frenzy. She then proceeded to rock our fucking socks off. Ani’s energy onstage and in her album recordings is simply unparalleled by any other singer-songwriter.

With her amazing grace on guitar, her somehow technical-yet-simple lyrical style, and backed by familiar band members Todd Sickafoose and Mike Dillon, Ani put on a hell of a show, playing songs that spanned the entirety of her 19-year career, which is only fitting after the release of Cannon (2007).

The opening act, Anias Mitchell, was very good, as well. She played a short selection of songs that demonstrated not only her raw talent, but her ease in varying her playing styles. Mitchell played two rock opera

pieces from a project that is still underway, one of which will feature Ani when it is released early next year. Mitchell is signed to Righteous Babe Records, Ani’s self-started record label.

One of the most stellar performances of the night had to be Ani’s first encore, “Both Hands.” This rendition felt like a fine mixture of the new Cannon recording and the original 1990 release. It’s so thrilling to hear “Both Hands” live for the first time, as most of Ani’s fans had never gotten the chance to before the rerecording for Cannon.

The first track on her first album, released in 1990, “Both Hands” tells the story of a failed relationship of a young person, which now carries an unusual weight coming from a singer-songwriter 19 years later in life. She is now happily married, wildly in love, and a proud mother. Most recording artists cannot claim this unusual time span effect. It’s probably safe to say that it leaves not only the fans breathless, but Ani, as well.

Ani played a wealth of new songs, as well as some recent and older ones. Heard that night were “Coming Up” from Not a Pretty Girl (1995), “Swan Dive” from Little Plastic Castle (1998), a fast-paced version of “Garden of Simple” from the double-album Reveling and Reckoning (2001), “Imagine That” and “Grey” also from Reveling and Reckoning, and “78% H20” as well as Ani DiFranco “Hypnotized” from Reprieve (2006).

Gossip gives ferocious performance at Showbox

by Jessica Price SGN A&E Writer Gossip The Showbox October 23 Gossip (formerly known as The Gossip) deserves every ounce of praise a band can get these days and then some. Not only is it unusual for a three-piece band from the Northwest fronted by a charismatic, largerthan-life Lesbian with a huge voice and even huger opinions a rare thing; it’s pretty much an anomaly. Beth Ditto, along with guitarist Brace Paine and drummer Hannah Blilie, have truly altered the state of post-punk with an unabashedly yet quite sophisticated take on gender-bending feminist music. To prove it, all you have to do is catch them live.

Last week’s sold-out appearance at The Showbox was a highly anticipated return to home turf (the band currently resides in Portland but began in Olympia in 1999).

Ditto, as usual, was a revelation – from the second she appeared she was greeted with thunderous applause from friends, fans and admirers. “Dime Store Diamond” from current release Music For Men set the tone for the night – raw, dancey, and packing all the energy and inspiration that is Gossip’s trademark. “Heavy Cross,” “2012,” and others from the new record got everyone moving. “8th Wonder” and “Love Long Distance” were scorchers. Performing with touring bassist Chris Sutton (formerly of

Dub Narcotic and currently half of C.O.C.O. and Hornet Leg), I heard snippets of Talking Heads, a bit of “Lady Marmalade,” and bits and pieces from Gossip’s breakthrough release Standing In the Way of Control. It felt like a party packed wall to wall, instead of a Friday-night all-ages concert.

The audience, made up largely of young women and quite a few men (Gay, straight, or unconcerned with gender affiliation), hung on Ditto’s every move. Alternating between sweet and ferocious, she joked that it felt good to “sell out.” Though the band are now world famous and on Columbia, they haven’t lost their grit – unless you consider getting better a downside. Music For Men was produced by Rick Rubin, who managed to make an ambitiously good band even better. This slightly sharpened focus has translated live. Beth Ditto’s remarkable voice was stronger than ever. With fiery orange hair and a hot skintight dress, she looked every inch as unconventional and gorgeous as always.

The encore was a dream come true throwdown of “Standing In The Way of Control” backed amazingly with “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” by none other than Tina Turner. Beth Ditto has really come into her own as a celebrity, a role model, and as a vocal force of nature. You can hear it in every line she sings. (Who else can tackle a Tina Turner cover with such ease?) Gossip is going to last and last, and I cannot wait to see what they do next.

by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer Seattle Symphony with guest conductor Ludovic Morlot Thursday, October 22 Benaroya Hall From Lyon, France, comes guest conductor Ludovic Morlot. Currently assistant conductor to James Levine at the Boston Symphony, he is a young bundle of energy whose every gesture exudes musicality. As he conducted this concert, he often bounced from the podium as though it were a trampoline, sometimes making an audible thump upon landing. He conducted, much like Los Angeles’ new music director, Gustavo Dudamel, with his whole body. His energy infected the players, who seemed eager to respond to his every direction.

Morlot led the first three movements of Prokofiev’s “Classical Symphony” at a very slow pace, which might have been deadly.

Instead, the slow tempi allowed room to inject all sorts of musical delights: accents, amplified phrases and tonal palette, and rhythmic playfulness. Most effective, however, was the sense of joyful release that came with the sudden change to the “molto vivace” of the fast last movement. For me, this alone was justification for the slow tempi, which had acted like an expanding balloon that was finally allowed to burst with exuberance. Nothing like an overall plan to make a piece really effective!

Bohuslav Martinu’s “Oboe Concerto” (1955) gave first-chair oboe Ben Hausmann a chance to play with us. Indeed, he seemed to delight in both the beauties and the challenges of this work. I can’t pretend to have totally grasped its merits on first hearing, but I can report that there were exquisite moments, especially during the quieter parts, when Martinu wisely eased up on the orchestration. First there was a brief dalliance between oboe and cello; later a lovely play between oboe and piano! The faster orchestral bursts and the virtuosic cadenzalike passages for oboe were less effective, but left one wishing for a chance to re-visit this seldom-heard concerto.

The Dvořák selections from his “Legends,” (Op. 59, Nos. 6, 7, & 9) were lightweight bundles of charm and warmth. With a welcome seasoning of schmaltz, Morlot let these bonbons fill the hall with melodic delight … a kind of musical tranquilizer after the modernisms of the Martinu.

The “Symphony No. 88 in G major” is one of my favorite mature Haydn works.

Thus, I had the usual apprehension before someone new attempts to mess with my preconceived notions of how a piece should go.

Not to worry! Morlot served us a fine Haydn meal, quite classical in shape, utterly lively throughout, and full of musical insights.

Again, one was struck by how well the players responded to his wishes. Energy flirted with lovely moments of repose. Haydn’s charm and wit were everywhere in evidence.

I couldn’t have wished for better.

Brandi Carlile Paramount Theatre October 24 The excitement was high in the Paramount as the audience awaited Brandi Carlile’s homecoming concert last week. There was a big turnout of Lesbians, acknowledging that Carlile is quietly one of us.

The warm-up act, Katie Herzig, was a nice surprise. Her band was tight and her voice was reminiscent of Patsy Cline. Herzig’s music and lyrics were pleasing. High points were “I Hurt, Too,” “Sweeter Than This,” “Two Hearts Are Better Than One,” and “Trouble.” Her song “Big Man” was featured in the Sex in the City movie.

Carlile started with “Everyone Has yo Be On Their Own” sung sweetly and a capella with band member twins Tim and Phil Hanseroth. Her voice reminded me of Marlene Dietrich for its lushness there.

Tim picked up his guitar and Phil his bass, and the rest of the band – Josh Neuman on cello and Allison Miller on drums – joined in for “Someone Loves You.” Carlile broke our hearts with “Alone In the Last Place I Wanted to Be” with a big Joan Baez voice.

She knocked us out with “Late Morning Lullabye” and “This is My Song.” “Lost in a Sea of Sunken Dreams” featured a hot drum solo by Allison Miller. I liked the fact that Carlile uses a strong, confident woman drummer.

Brandi talked about the fact that, having grown up in Maple Valley, she had fantasized about opening at the Paramount for

years. She demonstrated the wonderful acoustics there, by playing the song “Dying Day” without microphones. “I Will Do the Right Thing,” “Shadow on the Wall” and “Dreams” kept the concert moving apace.

Carlile said she has long been a fan of Elton John, so it was an honor for her to have him accompany her on one of the songs on her new CD, Give Up The Ghost. She talked about wondering what it would be like to meet him and what he would wear. Apparently he was wearing a tracksuit with big pink-framed sunglasses. When it came time to get down to business, he put the sunglasses away, but replaced them with reading glasses that also had pink frames.

“Turpentine” had appealing three-part harmony. Brandi introduced her sister Tiffany, who sang “Calling All Angels” with her.

“I Was Made For You” was my date’s favorite song, and I can see why. The crowd gave Carlile a standing ovation, which started a long, generous encore.

“I’m Going to Jackson,” a tribute to Johnny Cash, as well as “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “Let It Be” were fun covers. Katie Herzig and her band joined Brandi and her band for “You Showed Me How to Find My Way.” Brandi talked about how the next song, “That Year,” was the saddest song on her new album, so she played it with the smallest guitar she had. It was indeed a touching song. “Mad World” left us reflecting on Carlile’s incredible range from the quiet moments to the big double band accompanied numbers. She nailed every note in between with apt music and lyrics.

Celebrating 36 Years!

by Shaun Knittel SGN Staff Writer Mika Moore Theatre October 2 When international pop star Mika played the Moore Theatre on Monday night, he brought with him the perfect recipe for a show. For two hours, he turned the venue into the happiest place on earth by dishing out one serving after another of delicious pop music that left the audience with a sugar high. Mika has never been better.

After a fair opening set by newcomer Gary Go, Mika landed on stage wearing a spacesuit and a foot brace (the artist recently tore some tendons in his foot at a San Francisco, California show), which didn’t slow down the energetic Londoner one bit. Mika opened the show with three songs from his 2007 debut album, Life in Cartoon Motion: “Relax, Take It Easy,” “Big Girl (You Are Beautiful),” and “Stuck in the Middle.”

“I love Seattle,” he told the audience.

“The last time we were here, I lost my voice.

I wanted to come back and do a proper show in a theater. Are you ready?”

Much to Mika’s delight, the appreciative audience sang every word to every song and danced throughout the night. Monday night marked the tour’s last U.S. show, Mika said.

Superstar Mika keeps Moore crowd on their feet pants and shirt. The stage was full of hanging orbs, giving the illusion that we were attending a dance party on the moon.

The set list was well-balanced between the old material and Mika’s news songs from this year’s CD, The Boy Who Knew Too Much. Highlights from the new album were “Dr. John” and “Blame It on the Girls,” where he divided the audience into two groups, one side singing the title lyric, and the other answering with “blame it on the boys.”

“Love Today,” one of the songs that thrust Mika onto radio stations around the globe, was a crowd favorite and sent many into a jumping frenzy. The energy level never seemed to dip below maximal.

At the end of the show, huge white balloons were launched from the top balcony and bounced over the heads and clapping hands of the audience. Ending the 17-song set with an encore was inevitable. Despite a limp, the high-octane entertainer returned to the stage for a three-song encore, including “Grace Kelly” and “Lollipop.”

Mika is a true entertainer in every sense of the word. Not only is he a talented singer, often likened to Gay favorites George Michael and Freddy Mercury, but an accomplished musician as well. To say he is a trooper would be understating the performance he gave despite being injured. From start to finish, he had the audience jumping in unison and begging for more.

gives an easy-to-follow layout of these rare and inspired drawings, on special loan from the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, Italy.

Shortly before his death, Michelangelo destroyed his early sketches and models of his masterpieces. The drawings on display are a few of those remaining, and are all the more incredible because they are what Michelangelo did not want us to see.

They are, without doubt, a glimpse into his talent, but they show his human weakness and indecision, as well. These are sketches, done with pencil, chalk, and coal as quick guides and models for what he was proposing on a much grander scale. Diagrams of random torsos, arms, hands and even feet are hung on the walls with a brief explanation. Next to them are color representations of how and where they manifest in the finished works. The 12 drawings were all used as guides depicting Genesis, the surrounding prophets, sibyls and cherubs that adorn the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Also included are a few rough manifestations for what would become the imposing 72-foothigh wall painting, The Last Judgment.

Forbidden by the church to all but doctors, human dissection was a crime punishable by death. In exchange for a wooden sculpted crucifix (church of Santo Spirito), a priest allowed Michelangelo secret dissections of bodies awaiting burial. These makeshift operations gave Michelangelo an advantage over his contemporaries, giving him a deeper understanding of the human form and the muscular design under the skin. The knowledge is the basis of why his works are precisely defined and a physical celebration of the human form.

Aside from the drawings are other works done in tribute by contemporaries and devotees. There are engraved replicas of sections of The Last Judgment where the changes done to the original are notable. After the masterpiece was finished, later popes had issues with the blatant nudity and some of the saints’ representations. One engraving shows a complete change from how Michel-

angelo originally presented Saint Blaise in The Last Judgment; the figure was literally chipped away and repainted by someone else to look as it does today. Other displays of interest include a model recreation of the shipping crate used to move the original David statue in 1504. The massive 17-foot high giant was carefully transported by a system of log rolling and careful crating.

Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in 1475, and Pope Sixtus IV built the “church of the popes,” the Sistine Chapel, two years later. At age 24, Michelangelo received commission from the Holy See for the Pietá of Rome, and in five years’ time, would display his most famous work, David, in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Pope Julius II (grandson of Sixtus IV) set a commission to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.

Thinking his enemies submitted his name to cause embarrassment, the 35-year-old Michelangelo declined, but eventually would win the commission and, four years later, would complete one of the greatest artworks of the Renaissance. Twenty-two years later, Pope Julius II would personally commission Michelangelo to paint the altar wall of the chapel, which became the 72-foot high The Last Judgment.

Taking time out from a work-loaded afternoon, Rufus Wainwright was kind enough to speak with me over the phone last week as he prepared for his upcoming Seattle performance. Here’s what the pop maestro had to say when he waltzed into “The Music

Albert Rodriguez: Although you’re only performing in six cities on your upcoming tour, one of those cities is Seattle. Why are we so lucky?

Rufus Wainwright: I’m in the middle of a lot of projects, whether it’s remounting the opera [Prima Donna] in London for the spring and also in Oslo in June, and presently I’m in the studio recording my next album, which is a solo piano-vocal record.

So I’ve got these two very, very opposing projects in the works and taking up a lot of time, but at the same time I have to make some money to afford the Japanese dinners, and so I have to work. [Laughs.] Seattle has always been a Rufus hub, and it’s one of the first cities where I came into my own and felt accepted, and had a wild and crazy time.

They always ask me back, and when they do I can never refuse.

Rodriguez: Tell me about this performance at Benaroya Hall. Is it with a full band or string section?

Wainwright: It’s me and the piano, and it’s a great opportunity for me to run through some of these new songs that I’ve learned very well right now in the studio, take after take. So I can show off my practicing skills.

Rodriguez: I have two favorite Rufus Wainwright songs, “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk” and “The One You Love.” Where was the latter written?

Wainwright: That was written in New York. I had an affair with an oil rig worker from Calgary, who I actually met in Montreal and brought down here to try and pin down. He lived with his girlfriend, of course. That was sort of my desperate musical explanation of what was going on.

Rodriguez: Do you have any current celebrity or fellow musician crushes?

Wainwright: Well, you know, I’d hate to say it but I would take at least two of the Jonas Brothers.

Rodriguez: Leave me the other one! And, how about we split the Kings of Leon?

Wainwright: I don’t know. I’m more into the sick Disney thing. [Laughs.]

Rodriguez: Do you like what’s happening in pop music right now with Lady GaGa

and the Jonas Brothers?

Wainwright: I respect Lady GaGa, in terms of really going for it and creating a phenomenon and delivering on a few levels.

It’s fun to watch. It doesn’t really pertain to my personal interest in celebrity or music; I’m more interested in a real character, in a very human and vulnerable being, not so into the robotics. But she’s really going for it.

Rodriguez: Your last project was the live recording, Milwaukee at Last. It’s the first time, to my knowledge, that an artist has taped anything in Milwaukee. How did that come about?

Wainwright: I’m hoping to start a crazy trend, then you’ll have a “Barbra Streisand live from Milwaukee” yearly broadcast.

Rodriguez: What’s a Gay boy to do in Milwaukee?

Wainwright: Well, there’s a lot to do in a Gay boy. [Laughs.] It’s slightly starved for choice; everybody is very, very available.

[Laughs.] With that being said, Milwaukee is a surprising oasis of the Midwest. Aesthetically it’s very beautiful; it’s on the lake and has very interesting architecture. Also, there’s a kind of hidden quality to it because it is so over-exposed, for better or for worse.

It’s sort of in between Minneapolis and Detroit, it has a bit of both – it’s funky, but it’s not a war zone, either.

Rodriguez: Last year, you gave a special little performance for Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon. Are they as adorable in person as when we see them on screen?

Wainwright: They are frighteningly idyllic, and sweet and smart to boot. They’re not pushovers, either, and I loved hanging out with them. Jake and I hope to work together on something. They’re great.

Rodriguez: I’m curious, do you get hit on backstage by straight men?

Wainwright: I don’t know if you’d say “hit,” but there’s always been an affinity between myself and straight men, and vice versa. I have a wonderful boyfriend right now, Jorn, and we’re doing great. But I can always push the envelope again. [Laughs.] … Who knows, who knows, who knows! I don’t intend on it, but I still have the superpowers.
