PNB’s revival of Lady Bunny coming to Roméo et Juliette Seattle at Neighbours

Wearing her trademark larger-than-life wigs, outlandish costumes, and never without a song or a joke, she’s become one of drag’s most recognizable icons. Lady Bunny spoke with SGN about the origin of her name, the Pike Place Market, and why the Gay movement is in need of the younger generation.

Shaun Knittel: Thank you for talking with SGN. You’ve toured Seattle before, what did you think of our city?

Lady Bunny: I love it! I’ve spent many happy hours at Pike Place Market. As you can see, I love to eat and everything from fresh seafood to Asian delicacies to crumpets are heavenly to me.

I’m also obsessed with unusual berries, so I am thrilled to see lingonberry and marionberry jam. I don’t know that much about the club scene, but I know the food!

city isn’t known for important drag queens. But then again, why should you import talent when you have a multi-talented performer, Mark Finley? She sings, lipsynchs, and tells jokes, hosts, and in between sets, I understand that she lies underneath a rim seat in the toilet. That would explain her

breath at the end of the night. And then she stays on as the club’s janitor! She’s unbelievably versatile!

Lord Save Us from Your Followers: Mason Jennings An apology instead of apologia is brilliant at

by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer Good and evil, like most binary systems, is a fallacious construction to begin with. Other than Hitler, Charles Manson, and Ann Coulter, pure evil is fairly rare.

Likewise, pure goodness is also a rarity.

All this good and evil stuff is on my mind because I recently screened Lord Save Us from Your

Followers, a documentary by Dan Merchant, a devoted Christian himself, that is a call to action aimed squarely at the Christian community and asking them to be a bit more like Jesus and a bit less like Pat Robertson (the particulars of this hypothetical directive are mine, not Merchant’s).

In the documentary and the interview, Merchant keeps going back to his central question: literally, “What would Jesus do (or

say)?” It’s almost comedic at this point because of all the T-shirts and bumper stickers, but it may be the most important question asked today and it may be the only question that can save the American experiment from the Christian masses.

Would Jesus go to the Pride parade? I think he would. He might not be so enthusiastic about greasy-haired Lesbians simulating oral sex on the hood of a Jeep, but I think he’d enjoy Drag Queens belting out gospel tunes, Trannies singing “Jesus Loves Me,” and naked bicyclists.

Would Jesus talk like George W.? I don’t think so. But in all fairness, Jesus wouldn’t run for president, either.

The most powerful moments come when Merchant sets up a confessional booth in the middle of Portland’s Pride celebration and proceeds to apologize one-on-one to any Queer person who enters. It is amazing to watch personal walls tumble under the pressure of honest communication between two souls looking to open a door that’s been closed a very long time.

American-Style Cabaret Workshop Performance October 11, 7 PM Julia’s on Broadway The Pacific Northwest Cabaret Association and Jizel Music of San Francisco are presenting their first collaboration, an American-style cabaret performance workshop in Seattle on October 9-11, culminating with a cabaret show, developed by the participants, at Julia’s on Broadway.

“Cabaret is really all about the music,” Arnaldo Inocentes, who performs as Arnaldo!

Drag Chanteuse, told SGN. “If done right, it should be elegant, classy, and done with integrity.”

Arnaldo and Linda Kosut, both recipients of Back Stage magazine’s prestigious BISTRO award, which recognizes outstanding performances, accomplishments and contributions by members of the New York cabaret community, will co-teach the workshop alongside musical director Daryl Spadaccini. Performing for well over 10 years, Arnaldo is one of Seattle’s most recognizable talents. Kosut, a San Francisco resident, has also been performing in cabaret rooms and jazz clubs throughout the country for the past 10 years.

rious approach and beautiful stage appearance, the drag chanteuse is an expert in the history of American-style cabaret. According to Arnaldo, it evolved in the New York speakeasies and lounges, and was in its glory in the 1930s until the early 1970s. Major stars such as Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler started and honed their crafts on intimate New York cabaret stages.

The workshop is intended for people at all levels and stage of performance development and experience. Arnaldo said participants are to be coached on areas such as lyric interpretation, engaging the audience, stage presence, microphone technique, creating and delivering patter, and building an entertaining cabaret show. In addition, he said, students will be taught the business of cabaret, such as how to work with venue owners, technical and musical directors, as well as promoting and marketing a show.

“After all,” said Arnaldo with a smile, “the second word in ‘show business’ is ‘business.’”

The concert will be held at Julia’s on Broadway, a venue that has become synonymous with topnotch entertainment. Tickets for October 11’s 7 p.m., 90-minute, 20-song concert are $10 with a two-drink minimum.

Replacing Abdul, one gay judge at a time They took away the only ray of sunshine on the American Idol judging panel. And though it was a sad day for everyone except Paula Abdul – who is filthy rich and doesn’t need your pity – the news has only gotten better and better as the substitute roll call of guest judges for season nine goes on. First it was the Posh Spice announcement (Could any thinking person question her judging prowess after her Project Runway/Christian Siriano lovefest?), and now Renaissance Gay Neil Patrick Harris, who seems intent on insinuating himself into the hearts and minds of every last person in America, has already taped segments where he assists Randy, Simon and Kara in weeding out the people who show up dressed as The Statue of Liberty and Baby New Year. You won’t see it until January of 2010, of course, and by then NPH will probably have run for Senator of Utah and won in a landslide.

Beatles manager to hide his love away – on film

It’s never the first bit of trivia you learn when discussing the Beatles, that a Gay guy more or less discovered and managed the band until his death in 1967. Brian Epstein remained closeted until he died at age 32 of an overdose and was even rumored to have had a brief fling with John Lennon. (Lennon said it never happened, though the 1991 indie film The Hours and Times imagines another scenario.) And now Epstein’s short but very interesting life is being turned into a film called, for now, A Life in the Day. No casting news yet, but expect a downbeat nohappy-endings sort of thing (not counting the aesthetic thrills to be had from period details and advancements in the creation of realistic moptop wigs) to emerge when the final product hits screens in 2012.

PNB’s earlier Roméo and Juliet (beloved by fans, if not by all critics) was a lavish, color-filled version with elaborate costumes and a remarkable set by Broadway’s Ming Cho Lee, a set full of arches, colonnades, revolving set pieces. The costumes – all velvets and brocades – seemed “just right” for the immortal tale. The “score” was cobbled together from major and minor works by Tchaikovsky. Since the Russian master of ballet works (The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, etc.) never wrote a full score for R&J, PNB created its own. The choreography by Kent Stowell, then co-artistic director of the company, was serviceable at best.

There is no doubt that Maillot’s choreography is superb. The sets are spare, as are the costumes. The overall look is almost monochromatic. The entire focus is on the dance, often at the cost of clear characterization and plot development. And, it must be noted, dance is the focus of every major ballet company. Lavish sets and stunning costumes add theatrics, but without challenging, superb choreography and beautiful execution of that choreography, first-rate dance is impossible.

In a nutshell, the two Roméo and Juliets illustrate the history of PNB. It seems clear that the Stowell R&J will never be revived, and, in part, that seems sad. But time – and PNB – moves on, and the future of PNB is clearly focused on works like Maillot’s.

As in the 2008 winter PNB premiere, the dance is incredible in the 2009 fall revival.

Carla Körbes is vibrant as Juliet, moving from an impressionable adolescent, barely 13, to a mature grief as the tragedy unfolds. Lucien Postlewaite’s Roméo matches Körbes in every moment. (Like all major companies, PNB rotates the leading and supporting roles with several casts. Every audience has its favorites, but the opening night casts are usually considered the most important – rarely do critics return for second or third casts.)

The supporting roles – Olivier Wevers as Friar Laurence, Jonathan Porretta as Mercutio, Batkhurel Bold as Tybalt, Ariana Lallone as Lady Capulet – were all secure, all superb. The company, cast as Capulets and Montagues, provided solid support. Although the leading roles change from performance to performance, PNB audiences are always assured of outstanding work from the principal characters.

As usual, the PNB Orchestra, conducted

by Stewart Kershaw, did remarkable work.

Roméo et Juliette continues with performances through the weekend. “Good seating” is available for all remaining performances. Budget-minded dance fans should be sure to ask about “rush” seating, student and senior discounts, etc. Details at (206) 441-2424.

PNB continues its 37th season with a fourpart Director’s Choice, November 5-15.

That program includes a world premiere, a PNB premiere and revivals of Mopey and the audience-pleasing West Side Story Suite, a blockbuster from last season.

Somers Town saved in the last four minutes filip gierlinski

Town. I was pretty sure I liked what was going on, but I didn’t really believe until the very end. In fact, the entire film is saved by Somers Town the last four minutes.

Now Playing I wanted to screen Somers Town because Have you ever seen a movie that had you I loved director Shane Meadows’s previous on the fence through 95% of its running film, This Is England, a challenging flick set time? That’s how I felt watching Somers in 1983 that follows the exploits of Shaun,

Merchant’s take on Christian sensibility is unique in that he finds Christianity at least somewhat culpable for treating the Queer community poorly. This is a refreshing change from the “victim becomes the perpetrator” game we’re accustomed to. You know, the game when the preacher says, “If Johnny weren’t Queer, we wouldn’t have to beat him,” or something to that effect.

But I must take care not to let my dialogue become as polarizing and dogmatic as “theirs.” And Mr. Merchant is one of the most rational (this is intended to be amusing) and caring (this isn’t) Christians I’ve had the pleasure to chat with in quite some time. It was a good reminder that religion can be a positive force in the hands of nice people.

Lord Save Us from Your Followers opened Friday, September 25 at the Regal Cinemas Everett Mall Stadium 16. Merchant is hoping for a wider release in October, but that is not guaranteed. If you want to see this fascinating and powerful documentary (and you do, trust me) you should see it sooner rather than later – even if that means driving to Everett.

Scott Rice: Who do you want to see this film?

Dan Merchant: Everyone. I come from a television and advertising background, and one of the first things you learn there is to know your target audience. I really hope my audience is anyone and everyone between, say, 13 and 70.

Rice: That’s a broad demographic.

Merchant: Exactly. My usual joke is, everybody breathing.

Rice: Who’s going to benefit most from seeing it?

Merchant: I think the people who are willing to look in the mirror are the ones who benefit the most.

Rice: The movie seems to have a message of conciliation. My question is, is that a realistic goal?

Merchant: Yeah, I think it is.

I’ve seen enough weird, crazy stuff happen when people are willing to love each other and take care of each other. I’ve just seen walls come down where you wouldn’t think possible.

So, I guess I’ve already seen lots of impossible things happen. I’m just crazy enough and faithful enough, let’s say, yeah, that is possible.

Rice: I tell you, I am a fan of you in particular, and I think the whole idea is admirable but I think for the Queer community the question we have for you is how do you take this message to the Fred Phelps of the world or folks who may not be acting particularly Christ-like? Or not even that extreme, how do you take this message to more mainstream figures like Rick Santorum, Dr. James Dobson, and Ann Coulter?

Merchant: Fred Phelps is just crazy. It’s unfortunate that when people look at somebody like Phelps, if they would lump somebody like me in with him then they aren’t paying enough attention. So that guy’s just a whack-job.

Rice: How about Ann Coulter?

Merchant: Moving to the left of Phelps [Laughs.], I think it’s just a simple reminder that if you’re a Christian you have to go

an aimless youngster looking for a social set who happens upon a rather naive group of skinheads. The skinhead gang is more concerned with clothing, haircuts, beer, and girls than ideology – until their former leader returns from prison with a really bad attitude.

Somers Town is a London neighborhood near St. Pancras International Rail Station.

Tomo (Thomas Turgoose, who was excellent as the disaffected youth in This Is England) is a charismatic, though ethically challenged, runaway from Nottingham, a former textile center best known for lace and slums – oh yeah, and Robin Hood.

Tomo befriends Marek (Piotr Jagiello in his film debut), a sensitive Polish boy who was dragged to London by his single father who was looking for work. Tomo promptly moves into Marek’s apartment unbeknownst to Marek’s hard-drinking, blue-collar dad.

The boys fight, drink, steal, and fall in love with the same woman, a 25-year-old French waitress named Maria, all the while hiding Tomo under Marek’s bed.

Somers Town is the classic coming of age tale told in a unique setting. Though lessons are learned, they are newly rendered in the director’s refusal to end things in tidy fashion. Their lives will go on, and the boys may not be much smarter than they started out, but powerful experiences were, well, experienced.

The movie is about men and boys and falling in love and the reprehensible friend that you know you shouldn’t hang out with, but for lack of better offers, you do. It’s about how some people will change over time and others won’t. It’s a small film about the things that make us human – and I love small films about the things that make

us human.

Thomas Turgoose steals the film as Tomo.

Turgoose already impressed me with his turn as Shaun in This Is England, and he doesn’t disappoint here. The two roles are vastly different, though Turgoose plays them both with a subtlety that somewhat blurs the line between them. However, Tomo is angry and proactive while Shaun is lonely and reactive. Regardless, Turgoose is excellent in both films.

Piotr Jagiello gives a solid performance as the romantic Polish émigré, Marek. He photographs Maria and then pores over the pictures reverently while Tomo locks himself in the bathroom with them. Marek suffers the drinking and absence of his father in martyred silence through measured facial expressions and body language. I’d probably be giving Jagiello a more enthusiastic review if he hadn’t been playing opposite Turgoose.

Elisa Lasowski is wonderful in the small but pivotal role of Maria. She’s really only there as a prop to get the boys’ hormones flowing, but she is all French and beautiful and perfect.

The black and white photography is lean and haunting. The area around St. Pancras Station is shot with a loving attention to composition and an unwaveringly honest lens. It’s like strolling from King’s Cross Station to Camden.

I won’t tell you how the film ends, but it is a simple, elegant, and meaningful ending that speaks through events that do not happen as much as through events that do happen. Somers Town is not as cinematically powerful as This Is England, but it is strong filmmaking with a talented young actor that’s definitely worth a look.

Rice: I’ve often said Jesus wasn’t a bad guy; it’s all the people who came after him that screwed things up.

Merchant: Gandhi would agree with you, as well. He said something to the effect of, “I very much like your Christ, but I don’t care for Christians because they don’t remind me of Christ at all.” So you’re in good company with that sentiment.

R i c e : Why do Ann Coulter and her ilk insist on using the language of war?

Merchant: I can’t speak for Ann Coulter or any of those folks, but I would guess they’re trying to sell books, you know? I mean, she’s an entertainer.

Rice: Good point.

Merchant: She’s a very successful author. White hat verses black hat, that’s the easiest form of storytelling.

Rice: Let’s talk about separation of church and state. Is it important?

Merchant: Yeah, I think it is. I think it’s fundamentally misunderstood. Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists, where the wall of separation is referred to, was written to the Baptists to assure the Baptists that the Anglican Church was not going to become the state religion as it was in England. So the idea that there’s a secular, completely non-religious government that exists over here, and then there’s everything that exists over here that’s religion, was not at all, as I read it, what Jefferson was talking about.

That being said, we live in a pluralistic society, we live in a country where many faiths are represented, and where people without faith live. So clearly one shouldn’t be foisted on the other.

Rice: It’s interesting that you go back to the Jeffersonian letter and that you don’t really believe that Jefferson was dictating a strict separation of church and state.

Merchant: I don’t think he was – at least, not in that letter he wasn’t. In that letter, he was assuring the Baptists to settle down, that they wouldn’t have to become

Anglicans or Catholics.

Rice: Within the Constitution, do you think there is a clearly stated separation of church and state?

Merchant: Look, I’m a filmmaker, no constitutional expert here. But, I think … I guess I’m trying to read between the lines to see what you’re really asking me.

Rice: I’m only asking because questions about the separation of church and state are important to the Queer community right now because I think trying to couch Queer marriage, or even Queerness in itself, as being a moral issue or ethical issue brings religion into government. So I think the Queer community is invested in understanding what a right-wing government would look like and what the goals of the really conservative part of the Republican party are.

Merchant: I wouldn’t worry about the right-wing conservative Christians, they had their chance, you know? I see your question and I think the constitution is the guideline for America and the Bible is not the guideline for America.

Rice: I love that one of your methods [in the film] is to put bumper stickers all over yourself and talk to people. I think that illustrates a problem we have in that we like messages that can be distilled into bumper stickers or sound bites. But that leaves us – people like you, or the Queer community who have a little more complex message – that makes our job to get our message out a lot more difficult. How do we get people to listen to a more complex message?

Merchant: It’s a good question, and I’m not sure if Twitter is helping or hurting.

[Laughs.] You’re talking about a human nature question there, I think. I don’t know, I don’t have the answer to that one. I’m trying to encourage people in my little way with a movie. Take a deep breath, look around, and if you’re someone who believes in God, remember that God made the person sitting next to you and he loves that person just as much as he loves you. Take a breath.

Rice: I’m not sure why Christians fear Queers so much, but I am sure why we in the Queer community fear Christians. I think you can look at history and see that it is rife with proof of scapegoating and the vilification of the Queer community. What’s your advice to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered people on how to come to terms with the larger Christian community?

Merchant: I guess the first thing I’d ask for is to be patient with us. We’re flawed human beings just like you, and we’re trying to see lord save us page 25

Celebrating 36 Years!

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Bloody Henry Lee Center, Seattle University Through October 24 History lessons might go down a lot easier if they were all done by Brian Kooser and his puppets. Bloody Henry is the fruit of a year’s worth of puppetry design and some frantic work by a costume designer Deborah Skorstad, who miniaturized dozens of detailed, period-correct costumes in just several weeks. The puppets are breathtakingly beautiful, for puppets. (Kooser has done several other major productions with handmade puppets, including Dracula from 2007.)

Kooser created this history lesson about Henry VIII, one of the bloodiest monarchs in British history, and his six wives. Henry VIII was the king who broke with Rome and created the Church of England, and then became England’s head churchman. He wasn’t satisfied with divorcing his wives; several of them lost their heads in the process. He is now known to have had syphilis, which was partly why many of his babies were stillborn. His Y chromosome was apparently not very vigorous, which resulted in mostly girl babies while he longed for boys, and he

Bloody Henry a grossly funny history lesson killed or divorced the women who couldn’t give him boys.

The history in this production is accurate, but it does have a distinct focus on how the babies came along, and Henry’s difficult digestive system. Voices for the women – Tina Myers, Lauren Herrick, Colleen Egan, Kenna Kettrick, and Jenell Weidlich – did a lot of moaning in this production. Gavin Cummins was the main voice of the evening, since he starts out the voice of Young Henry until Henry’s death.

There are also cutouts, shadow puppets and one humongous Bunraku puppet of the pope, which is stunning. You might have seen it walking along in the Fremont Solstice Parade. There were also video accompaniments for atmospheric location shots, and there were live musicians playing original, period-style musical pieces on the viola de gamba and a Renaissance violin (though how that is different from a modern one is mysterious).

The script of this production at over two hours might be a bit long, since we all pretty much know that King Henry lived and died and had a lot of wives. Still, there are few slow spots and there is some grossly funny dead baby dropping and peasant throwing and a few heads rolling. Not to mention King Henry in shadow sitting on a chamber

pot….

But the depiction of this historic jockeying for political power and the treating of women like chattel and the ability of this monarch to do whatever he wanted while growing ever more huge and smelly and disgusting makes us remember that we don’t really want a system of government that monarchy

represents, and that maybe this system we came up with, as messy and tempestuous as it is, is not nearly as bad as a government can be.

He’s decided, for now, to be an actor (he has acted in several movies) and a writer. He’s written a one-man show and is performing it at ACT Theatre. Runt of the Litter is an autobiographical account of his childhood obsession with becoming a pro baller and his rivalry with his older brother, Tony.

A bit confusingly, he has decided to name his autobiographical character “Jack Henry” rather than “Bo Eason,” but the details

are his own; the four knee surgeries before pro football, the older brother who was the “natural” and the low expectations others had for Bo to make it to the big leagues, and the father who seemed only to pay attention during football season, or through football practice.

Bo is the youngest of six, with four older sisters. He was the smallest of the two boys, hence the “runt” of his litter. He was considered too small to compete. He makes the point that runts have to try harder and work longer for the same result, which makes them fighters. His single-minded focus on becoming a pro footballer eclipsed any other intention or interest from age 9 to age 29.

He starts his story on the last game of the playoffs where he faces his brother, the famous quarterback from the New England Patriots. He is a Houston Oiler safety. He describes the power of the safety and calls it the “forgotten position.” His perspective is that if the safety makes sure you don’t have a successful play, the safety controls the game.

It’s a reasonable explanation.

As the minutes tick down to the big game and his opportunity to beat his brother to the Super Bowl, he describes what has gotten him to this point. It’s a lot of detail. You probably should know something about football, though if you don’t, you’ll probably know a lot more about football when you’re through watching this show. One of the more squirm-inducing moments is when he shoots something directly into both knees – on stage. Right in front of you. For real.

Perhaps his numerous surgeries cause him to need to do that on a daily basis in real life with some sort of medicine. It just has to hurt. A lot of focus is on his knees and coping with injury. One of the stories is about what he thought was a game-ending injury in high school. It was almost a relief, he describes, because now he got to think about sex! Otherwise, his runt-ness and determination didn’t leave him any room to think about sex. That was not to be, as his father directs the doctor to do whatever is needed to fix Bo’s knees so he can play again.

The other squirm-inducing moment is when he leaves the stage for the putative game and comes back filthy and bloody, bleeding heavily from the mouth into a towel. It’s very realistic, trust me.

There is a lot said about metaphors of playing sports being related to all of life’s philosophies: playing hard, keeping your eye on the ball, never letting the ball drop, advancing in yards and inches, pick yourself off and dust yourself off, winning is the whole point. All of those metaphors are front and center in this piece. Which, for all its visceral moments, can get a bit tiring for someone who is less than interested in sports metaphors as applied to life. It’s all rather simplistic. But if you like football, there’s every reason to go see this show.

Merchant: First off, thank you for being open to it and before I answer that question and as an adjunct to your preceding question and to that comment, that scene in the movie is as impactful for every Christian who’s seen it as for every Queer person who’s seen it. So take some encouragement from that, that we’re not trying to be narrow minded.

That confession booth is a real big look in the mirror for so many Christians who, through arrogance, through ignorance, through cruelty, through whatever, aren’t paying attention to how we sound and how we’re hurting other people, intentionally or not. And a lot of times it’s not intentional, and that’s every bit as shameful and embarrassing. The experience in the confession booth was remarkable because I was prepared to go in there and get yelled at all day. I wasn’t sure about what was going to happen, but I sort of had to resign myself to the fact that that’s quite likely what would be. [Laughs.] I understand, you know? I’ve been looking around. I’ve seen what goes on

and it’s not good.

So what was astonishing to me, again being a Christian guy, I’m going to tell you I felt the hand of God move that day. And what happened was that those people that were willing to come into the booth – and we could only accommodate, maybe, I think we talked to 26 people that day, and there were probably another, I don’t know, 40 or 50 or 60 that I couldn’t visit with because I’d end up having these great conversations with people [because] I’d give the apology and then we’d start talking. And some, we’d talk for five, six, seven, eight minutes, and some it was 10 or 20 minutes. We could have done it for a week, probably.

But a couple of observations: I was grateful that there are people that had been so hurt by Christians and so hurt by the church that were still willing to accept my apology, to hear my apology, and then just to be open to the possibility, like you were just describing in your life experience, and it sickens me and it breaks my heart that there are Christian people who, regardless of their intentions, have chased people away from

God. That is a heartbreak. That is the last thing that I want to be responsible for. And if I can in some small way be responsible for [saying], hey, you know what, I’m sorry you were treated poorly as a kid and I’m sorry you had a backwards church that was horrifically cruel to you. They got it wrong. God made you, too, and he loves you, too. And they got it wrong.

Rice: I really loved the scenes near the end of the movie where you set up the confessional booth at the Portland Pride event, and I thought that was a lovely moment and gesture on your part and very powerful and meaningful for every Queer person who sees it. by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer Jennifer’s Body Now Playing By now you’ve read everyone else’s review of Jennifer’s Body, the new Megan Fox vehicle (‘cause that’s more of what Jennifer’s Body is than anything else) which also stars plucky, geeky Amanda Seyfriend as her best friend. Still, I felt the need to share my opinion as both a horror writer myself and a die-hard horror fan, especially a fan of campy, B-grade horror flicks like The She-Creature and the Scream movies.

First of all, you need to like Megan Fox a whole lot to not feel ripped off after paying your dollars to see this film. And you have to have the need to drool over her scantily clad body (and at one point nude, but in water so it’s hard to tell if it’s really her), which the guys in the screening audience I saw it with did. Okay, so did I, but that’s just me and my boy side getting turned on by pretty flesh. If you do like Fox, and you don’t mind that for most of the movie her annoying but mostly likeable sidekick Amanda Seyfried is ruining some of the nearly softcore porn shots of Jenny in her lickable attire, then go

True, this is not a horror film, but more of a mishmash – and not a particularly good one at that – of better-done films in the genre like I Was a Teenage Werewolf and the wonderfully wicked Ginger Snaps movies (one was shown at SIFF a couple of years ago, and it made a few folks walk out, nearly gagging). There are some funny and darkly disturbing moments, particularly after young Jennifer (Fox) is turned into a home for a particularly hungry demon, and she starts munching on her male classmates in more and more gory ways.

I also liked the way the band members, who turn Ms. Jenny into a monster, take a moment to laugh at the silliness of the whole thing, making reference to the ever-present (and mostly awful) soundtrack that at times threatens to drown out the whole film.

Then there’s Seyfriend in the ugliest prom getup I’ve ever seen, in a Carrie send-up, chasing down our little miss monster to finally have an almost sexy fight to the death.

Not the stuff of Lovecraft or Clive Barker, but still not the worst horror film I’ve ever seen either. If you do go, take friends to laugh with, and go to the matinee show.

Houses of Thee Unholy

While I’m not a Led Zeppelin fanatic by any means, I’m certainly glad that veteran Seattle burlesque performer Paula the Swedish Housewife is. This production, Paula’s brainchild, is by far the most ambitious and raunchy burlesque I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot. The third annual installment of “House of Thee Unholy: An Evening of Led Zeppelin Burlesque” sold out the Triple Door last week show after show. This year featured an all-star cast of 13 LGBT performers and nine straights, all singularly talented and active in Seattle’s thriving burlesque/boylesque community, as well as in music and fringe theater.

The premise, as one might guess, is the

music of Led Zeppelin performed by a live band with an assortment of burlesque peeling and shenanigans happening simultaneously. To pull this off, a red-hot band is absolutely necessary, and The Mighty Arms of Atlas/Sirens On the Rocks combo consisted of eight people elevated above the burlesquers on what appeared to be – you guessed it – rocks. Local performer Nick Garrison joined the powerhouse vocal team of Scott Shoemaker (The Quit) and fabulous belter Jen Ayers. The two did Robert Plant proud, and then some – I couldn’t help but think how delighted all of Led Zep would be to see such a completely brazen and hilarious interpretation of their catalog. Rife with hedonism, humor, and a gender-bending smorgasbord of sex acts, songs such as “Houses of the Holy,” “I Can’t Quit You Baby,” and “When The Levee Breaks” (pitch-perfectly sung by Ayers) took on whole new depths. “Dazed and Confused” brought local fave and lead choreographer Waxie Moon to the stage, writhing around in a multi-partnered/multi-gendered fantasy sequence. “Lemon Song” featuring Indigo Blue and Leroi the Girl Boi was a juicy number indeed, definitely perfecting new ways to utilize streams of glitter. Although the acts were unabashedly deviant, all were done with humor intact – definitely not for

Led Zeppelin burlesque mixed hedonism, humor

the faint of heart, but that’s what made the show so unique. Who would dare to even think of such a thing, let alone gather up Viking hats, ballet performers, glitter, a giant zeppelin, and take on the catalog of one of the most enduring classic rock bands of all time? Honoring their inspiration, the band perfectly executed a set of classics including “Communication Breakdown,” “Living Loving Maid,” “Bron-Yr-Aur” and “Bring It On Home.”

What made this production really sizzle was much more than the concept and the audacity it took to pull off such a feat. Each performer seemed to be having an absolute blast. When Lily Verlaine stood en pointe, back to the audience, you could see the band smiling down at her and feeding off her energy before she turned to twirl her tassels.

Ninety minutes of pure rock and roll fantasy mixed with huge imagination, extravagance, and the collaborative efforts of Seattle’s best and brightest performers make “House of Thee Unholy” a must-see every year.

An idea this inspired is just what it takes to break new ground in the worlds of both rock and burlesque. Don’t miss it next year.

Celebrating 36 Years!

People’s Republic of Special Ladies at Re-Bar Komedy brings solid talent a special evening Laff Hole October 7 and 21 Chop Suey On September 16, SGN attended “Laff Hole,” Seattle’s alt-comedy spectacle, which features stand-up, sketch and other “nonsense.” Produced by the People’s Republic of Komedy (PRoK), Laff Hole runs the first and third Wednesday of every month at Chop Suey.

Headlined by James Adomian, who was recently featured on the cover of Out Magazine, and hosted by PRoK cofounder Emmett Montgomery, this particular Laff Hole had some strong talent. Adomian, a member of the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater – which you may remember from Comedy Central – put on a solid stand-up performance.

The night also featured a hardcore Gay porn cartoon featuring E.T. the extra terrestrial, with his unusual, blossoming, flowerlike equipment.

PRoK has anywhere from 15-30 regular local comedians for its events. “We’re kind of a nebulous organization of comedians,” co-founder of PRoK Kevin Hyder told

SGN. The show has local roots, starting at the Capitol Hill Arts Center. “We’re very Capitol Hill-centric,” Hyder told SGN. You may be familiar with People’s Republic of Coffee – the similar names aren’t a coincidence; the business owner and co-founder, Hyder, dabbles in both coffee and comedy.

PRoK performed the last two years at Sasquatch, and they curate the Vera Project stage at Bumbershoot. “We are kind of at the epicenter of the alt-comedy community here in Seattle,” said Hyder PRoK used to do a weekly show at Rebar, but they’ve been doing the bi-weekly at Chop Suey since February, which has been very successful. This is made obvious from how quickly the house fills up, mostly with regulars.

PRoK has other weeklies, monthlies and bi-monthlies, including a monthly nonprofit show at the Comedy Underground in Pioneer Square. Charities include various youth, environment and LGBT causes.

Doors are at 9 p.m., a band plays at 9:30 p.m., and the show starts at 10 and goes until midnight. Cover is $7. This is a 21+ event.

Lady Bunny: I’d describe my act as fast-paced, raunchy comedy. I do medleys of song parodies and tell filthy jokes, and I have a particularly rotten new Michael Jackson routine guaranteed to offend all!

You never know how humor will translate in other areas – and it’s been a while since I’ve played Seattle, but I went over really well at Portland’s Gay pride this summer. Knittel: You’ve been in the business for a number of years. How did you get your start?

Lady Bunny: You calling me old? Well, even before I did drag, other drag performers riveted me. In Chattanooga, Tennessee, where I grew up, there weren’t any real women wearing huge wigs and sequin gowns. So, I was in heaven, and it wasn’t long before I entered a Halloween contest and won – if only third place. I then moved to Atlanta, Georgia and became RuPaul’s roommate. We also lived together after we moved to NYC and are still friends. In fact, we just released a duet called “Throw Ya Hands Up,” which can be found on iTunes on Ru’s latest album, Champion.

Knittel: What’s the concept behind your name?

Lady Bunny: Lady is a prefix that many queens give themselves to seem grander – like Lady Chablis from the film Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil. I got my start in Atlanta when I was RuPaul’s roommate – none of us had any money, and our outfits were mostly homemade. So the idea of calling myself a lady of any kind was a joke in itself. Our early looks were quite pitiful!

Bunny was the name of a comic book about a blonde model who was “queen of the in-crowd.” I worshipped that character and her insane, late 1960s wardrobe, so I’m sure that had a big effect. But, Bunny was also the name of Sergeant Carter’s girlfriend from Gomer Pyle. I never consciously referenced either of these characters, but they made an impression. by James Whitely SGN Contributing Writer Special Ladies September 17 Re-bar Re-bar, just off the hill, is a gem. I wanted to learn more about what goes on at the club that will soon be celebrating its 20th anniversary next Valentine’s Day, yet still remains largely undiscovered by some parts of the community. So, jaunting down across I-5 on September 17, I attended “Special Ladies” at the Re-bar.

“It’s really different every night, because we have so many different shows,” said Kerstin Graudins, a bar manager that has worked at Re-bar for 13 years and was certainly the most special lady of the night.

Graudins was entirely behind Special Ladies, an art opening featuring silkscreen prints by Graudins depicting local and wellknown drag queens who have performed at Re-bar during her time there.

“I wanted to sort of consummate my being here for so long. I asked everyone to give me a photo of them to silkscreen, and then got them to come out and perform.”

The drag queens who couldn’t make it for the opening made video appearances

throughout the night.

Graudins wanted to acknowledge Re-bar and the performers specifically. “I didn’t think anyone would agree to let me use their images, but it’s just been incredible how supportive everyone has been,” Graudins told SGN. The locally focused Graudins, who teaches silkscreening at the Vera Project, spent about five months on the project. The prints have been on display since August 25, and go down at the end of September. The prints are selling for $100 each, and are still available.

Special Ladies, which was hosted by Ade and Jackie Hell, began with – of all things – bingo. However, clearly disinterested since no one was winning, the bingo hosts began throwing the prizes at patrons so that the drag show could begin.

After the show, a well-attended dance party began, spun by DJ Girth and DJ Conquergood, friends of Graudins’ who offered their services for her special night.

Re-bar hosts parties like Bacon Strip with Sylvia O’Stayformore, Flammable!, and even a roller disco.

Knittel: You are one of the creators of Wigstock. Tell me about that experience.

Lady Bunny: A 20-year run in NYC is nothing to sneeze at, and we had a blast. It was also a blur, because it really did take over my life and I’m glad we are currently on hiatus. However, the festival of love and hairpiece hasn’t “curled up and dyed,” and we may revive the festival next year for a one-off 25-year anniversary. I do miss it, but there are also a lot of things that I’d like to achieve personally. I guess I feel that I know that I can organize an outdoor festival, so I’m keen on taking on some new challenges. I’ve had a few acting roles in RuPaul’s Starrbooty and last summer’s Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild, in which I play a song I wrote and sang.
