Boylesque 101 October 17 Oddfellows Building Nearly 200 bump and grind enthusiasts packed the West Hall to watch the first ever Academy of Burlesque Boylesque 101 student graduation recital, October 17 in the Oddfellows Building on Capitol Hill.

During the past six weeks, gender-bending sensation Waxie Moon and Miss Indigo Blue, headmistress of the Academy, taught 12 students all things burlesque – with a twist. Boylesque, according to Indigo, is a “show where a girl can wear pants and a boy can wear a dress.” With the help of Waxie and Indigo, each student created a character and production number to perform live – for the first time – at Saturday’s recital.

The show began with two backto-back performances by students attending the “Bump and Grind” and “Belly Dance” classes. Immediately afterwards, Ernie Von Schmaltz joined Indigo as cohost for the duration of the show.

hugely impressed. The diversity of the films has covered just about every genre, while the storytelling and talent levels have been consistently high. SLGFF presents Dennis Cooper shorts of surreal – and graphic – nature Jean-Luc Bertini

Queer journeys are often marked by violence and disconnection. Cooper’s writing and these films go to the heart of both. Weak Species caused quite a stir at the Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival this past May before winning Best Short Film. It is one of the most frightening and disturbing films I have ever seen. And I loved every second of it.

Erik Smith is mesmerizing as George, a self-destructive teen who runs into a couple of nasty men who are happy to help him realize his destructive desires.

Weak Species is a terrifying film. About 10 people left the theater during the screening in Honolulu. However, our minds do most of the work filling gaps with things more frightening than what’s on the screen in perfect Hitchcockian mode.

Some viewers argued the violence is salacious, but I believe it works metaphorically when you consider how disaffected Queer youth can so easily end up in the hands of nefarious sorts who they think are fulfilling their desires.

I met up with Faltz in L.A. this past September to talk about Weak Species.

Trial by Fire: Dennis Cooper on Film October 24, 11:59 PM Central Cinema If William S. Burroughs kicked in the door and nudged us through for a peek, Dennis Cooper strolled right in, sat down on the soiled couch, and jacked off.

Dennis Cooper may be the most controversial American writer you’ve never heard of. If you know his work, pat yourself on the back; you are urbane and intellectually courageous. If you don’t, run over to BaileyCoy Books and order a copy of Closer.

The three short films based on Cooper’s writing make up Trial by Fire: Dennis Cooper on Film. Bug Crush is about a disconnected small town teenager whose fascination with the mysterious new kid takes him to some dark places. Not actually based on Cooper’s writing, the director, Carter Smith, counts Cooper as a major influence and recently worked with him on another project.

Userlands, directed by Brandon Walley, was produced as a trailer for the anthology of the same name. The anthology is a collection of stories written by authors Cooper contacted through his blog. This three-minute flick is an aimless surreal jaunt inside our collectively sick head. (The word “surreal” is used here like André Breton would have used it.)

These two flicks are seriously dark, especially Bug Crush. Userlands is fascinating to look at, but as a trailer I don’t believe it was ever intended to develop serious tension. However, the film that will really mess you up is Weak Species, directed by Dan Faltz.

Scott Rice: The Weak Species screening at the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival has been designated, along with the classic Jack Wrangler porno Gemini, as 21 and over. Are you relieved to know that 18- to 20-year-old Queer folks are being protected from seeing your film?

Dan Faltz: Well, we’re certainly in good company with a legend like Jack Wrangler!

We’ve been suggesting that programmers put out a clear warning for audiences. The film has certainly made some people upset and caused a few to faint, so I definitely understand programmers wanting to post an

age restriction.

Rice: Would you let your 16-year-old see Weak Species?

Faltz: Hard to say; my 16-year-old would probably know how to access bootleg Japanese horror films online, or play multiplayer online games that are much more graphic than this film. The subject matter is certainly covered in police procedurals each week on television. There are meaner-spirited films that are PG13, so I dunno….

Rice: Weak Species won best short film at the 2009 Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival.

I know there was controversy (and lots of drama) around its selection for the festival in the first place, and the win caused a bit of a stir, too. Why do people react so strongly to this film?

Faltz: It meant a lot to hear that the committee felt the film was the best-crafted film in the festival; it was incredibly rewarding to be acknowledged for the technical craft of the creative team that made the film.

I think in many ways, whether we consciously know it or not, many people go to LGBT festivals to feel affirmation. And we all bring something to what we see – our experiences, our personal history, our perspective, that filters our experience of a film.

To me, for all its grit, Weak Species is ultimately a hopeful film. I hope audiences can take that away.

Rice: I spoke to people in Honolulu who didn’t like the way the film portrayed Queer characters. There were actually two areas of concern: First, the violence is gratuitous, and second, the characters don’t represent the Queer community. What do you say to these people?

Faltz: Dennis Cooper uses abuse and death as recurring themes to take an internal trauma and make it external where we can hold it up and examine it. As teenagers, we’re often in an emotional state of emergency. No one has it easy; straight, Gay, no matter how popular.

And many of us turn to risk as an outlet, to feel, to connect, find ourselves – whether that means sex, trying drugs, or just plain looking for danger. I think of the crazy things my friends and I did in high school with no thought about the possible repercussions. There’s an invincible feeling at that age that informs our choices.

To me, what is important is the communication between characters and the feelings they have. The sex and violence is very meaningful to the people involved; I wanted to find a way to show what goes on in one’s head, or what someone communicates to their partner during sex. One of the characters in the film makes a terrible choice, but

he makes the choice; he is not an innocent victim. I think that is ultimately the most upsetting part. I made a point of obscuring the sex and the violence. I think what viewers embellish with their imaginations is worse than anything I could explicitly show. I think that is what audiences are reacting to.

Rice: What can you tell us about the feature project?

Faltz: The feature script is much closer to Dennis’s story and poetry. I think it’s a richer, scarier, moving story. It’s a difficult climate for indie film, especially gritty, Gay stories. We’re hoping to find someone to produce who will take good care of the film and fight to keep Dennis’s work intact. It means a lot to have Dennis’s blessing for the project; he’s been amazing.

Rice: What drew you to Dennis Cooper’s work?

Faltz: Dennis’s writing is so sparse, like poetry – short sentences that tell you a huge amount. To me, that seems much like filmmaking, revealing more information shot by shot. I tried to film his story in a poetic way, to isolate feelings, faces. I found the ending of Closer very hopeful. And I think he knows the way teens think and act; he really gets that adolescent state of emergency we all go through. I wanted to see that on the screen.

Rice: How is Cooper’s work valuable to the Queer community?

Faltz: Many of the writers I love observe and depict the world and people with all our deep flaws; I think Dennis’s writing takes us to a place where we have to ask ourselves dark questions about the nature of our desires. He is an important voice in literature in general, as well as a unique and groundbreaking Gay writer. His writing really changed the way I write and how I think of writing. He is also incredibly supportive of emerging artists and encourages creative collaboration.

Rice: Why should people go see Weak Species?

Faltz: It means a lot to have one’s film selected for audiences to see, and of course I’d love for folks to see the film and even send me their thoughts. But I’d encourage folks to take the time to see a program at the Seattle Lesbian and Gay Film Festival to support film by and about LGBT people.

We have fewer LGBT shows and characters on TV and cable than we did just a few years ago. In this media climate, it’s so important to make sure our stories and voices are seen and heard. I’m always glad I saw that film that surprised me or changed my mind or made me see my community in a different way. We’re lucky we can do that.

Deep characters anchor Hollywood, Je T’aime

by Nevin Jefferson SGN Contributing Writer Devastated by a love affair gone to hell, Jerome (Eric Debets) journeys from Paris to Los Angeles over Christmas, longing for a change of scenery and dreaming of a career in the movies. The opening scenes of the film in Paris are in black and white, and when Jerome hits Hollywood, the film changes to bright, candylike colors, like The Wizard of Oz. Once in Hollywood, Jerome tries his best to enjoy the city, making endearing firsttimer mistakes. He pisses off the cab driver and bartender by not tipping them. A bus ride to the beach takes all day, and he finds that the beach is cold. While suffering at the beach, Jerome hits it off with a Gay pot dealer (Chad Allen), who drives him halfway home. A taco-stand Tranny named Kaleesha (Diarra Kilpatrick) escorts him the rest of the way, introducing him to Norma Desire (Michael Airington), a “shabby chic” Silverlake drag queen who takes Jerome under her wing.

Director Jason Bushman’s shrewd firsthand knowledge of the less glamorous side of the Hollywood merry-go-round gives a nice ride. Jerome also has a few romantic flirtations, including a sexually explicit encounter with a waiter he meets at a bath-

house.

The best part of this film is in the deep portrayal of the characters; the sad-eyed Frenchman who ends up surrounded by an exquisite cast of Hollywood’s colorful, flamboyant detritus, the people who cause polite society to look the other way. They are acted out with care and detail, ensuring that each is a fully formed person, not a cardboard stereotype. Drag queen Norma (Michael Airington) is absolutely fabulous, in every form of the word. She could have so easily have become a stereotype based on either her lifestyle or her age, but Airington and the script make her brassy yet fragile, obnoxious but loveable, and bitchy while desperately loyal. She also gets some of the film’s funniest lines (laughs and cheers erupted from the festival audience at her screaming “Good eyes” at a homophobic youth who quite astutely observes that, yes, she and her friends are indeed Gay) and many of its most tender moments. Chad Allen as the Gay pot dealer and Diarra Kilpatrick as Kaleesha are characters who you care about.

Bottom line, festival programmers should be proud as they’ve definitely outdone themselves. Granted, they’ve also set themselves a pretty high bar that I just hope SLGFF 2010 can somehow surpass.

Drool October 23, 7:45 PM Cinerama After Anora (Laura Harring) accidentally kills her abusive husband, she flees crosscountry with her kids, new girlfriend Imogene (Jill Marie Jones) and the corpse all in tow. Perfectly awesome love story-comedythriller-satire with an outstanding performance from former Mulholland Drive it-girl Harring, this movie never does anything you expect it to. It constantly keeps the viewer engaged and wondering what is going to happen next. An absolute slam-dunk for writer and director Nancy Kissam and probably my favorite film of this year’s festival.

John Hurt in An Englishman In New York

by Nevin Jefferson SGN Contributing Writer The 14th Seattle Gay and Lesbian Film Festival opened with An Englishman In New York, a very powerful and epic telling of the story of Quentin Crisp. He wasn’t your ordinary fruit; he was a Gay, proud man who wasn’t afraid to be himself, and did just that – even after being beaten numerous times.

Crisp would eventually become a voice of authority for the Gay world.

This true-to-life story came alive on the screen thanks to an extraordinary performance by John Hurt as the witty, prolific, influential Gay pioneer who becomes a pop culture icon right before your eyes. John Hurt’s performance is riveting and breathtaking. Much of the film’s dialogue comes from Crisp’s own writing and performances.

The movie opens as Quentin is flying high on international fame before landing low in New York. In one of the opening scenes, Quentin is walking through the streets of the city in his full splendor. He’s complimented by a big and beautiful middle-aged black woman who hails him with praises of love, respect, and admiration. He is genuinely touched by this, and he takes off with more sashay in his hips – giving new meaning to swishing in the streets.

When Quentin is granted a resident alien status based on his unique qualities, the uniting of the city and the Englishman is a match made in heaven.

After performing his one-man show How to Be a Happy Person, he’s approached

by Connie Clausen, superbly played by Swoosie Kurtz. She tells him that she wants to make him a star and launches his career in an off-Broadway one-man show. The two begin a strong mutual friendship that flourishes as Connie gets him on every TV talk show and radio show.

Connie books him on a black radio station, where the very flaming Quentin is surrounded by hardcore ghetto brothers and a tough-as-nails militant DJ. They accept him for who and what he is and make him an “honorary brother.” The listeners from the hood calling in for advice love both the man and his advice. Several scenes later, Quentin goes to a leather bar and is 86ed because he isn’t dressed to their code. Our cult darling becomes the epitome of an effeminate Gay man with effeminate ways, complete with makeup and trademarks that consisted

of ascots galore, his signature ring, and hat.

His frankness, arrogance, and honesty wows some, and pisses off others. When he claims same-sex love is impossible, he’s attacked

by Gays for “playing to straights.”

Quentin becomes a movie reviewer for Christopher Street magazine, run by Philip Steele (excellently played by Denis O’Hare).

The two strike an agreement that touches on the richness of the U.S. film culture of the time compared with today’s times. Steele allows Quentin the freedom and liberty of criticizing the movies he wants to. Steele writes the reviews, which consist of the thoughts and opinions of Quentin, during a conversation between the two at a greasy spoon.

Philip, already a fan of Crisp’s, becomes his best friend, and a platonic relationship slowly builds between the two. Quentin’s spontaneous words of wit and wisdom earn him a high place in the Gay community, but then one of his comments gets him in trouble: His statement during one show that “AIDS is a fad, nothing more,” and his refusal to recant or campaign for Gay rights. “It is my policy never to lie, never to defend,” he famously said.

Of course, this causes all hell to break loose with his career. His Gay audience, who has started to really suffer from the AIDS epidemic, turns away from him. Crisp is dropped by his agent and editor after their pleading with him to retract proves fruitless.

Crisp’s eyes are opened when he gets to know young artist Patrick Angus (in a fantastic performance by Jonathan Tucker), who is dying of AIDS. Crisp keeps his promise to the artist by having his work shown in a gallery.

Well into the Clinton era, Quentin wakes up to find a lady in his apartment. She assures him that he’s not dead and she’s no angel; his door was just unlocked. The lady is performance artist Penny Arcade, marvelously played by Cynthia Nixon. She takes Quentin back to the stage with moving material that takes him into his 10th decade, and once again he wins over the Gay community.

Steele returns to the tiny and shabby apartment to find Quentin living on the champagne and peanuts circuit. Steele devotedly looks after the now-failing Quentin, who’s enjoying his final bow. He tells his friend that he has a million dollars, and they ask why he doesn’t spend any of it. Quentin tells

(Emmy-nominee Sigourney Weaver) and her extraordinary transformation after her Gay son Bobby (Ryan Kelley) meets with tragedy, this movie is as important as it is fascinating. Beautiful and moving, it’s nice to see this soaring achievement get the cinematic screening it so richly deserves.

Rating: 3.5 (out of 4) West Side Story October 25, 2:30 PM Cinerama The 1961 Oscar-winning Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins and Stephen Sondheim musical classic, directed by the great Robert Wise (The Haunting, The Sound of Music), gets the sing-along treatment with screening at Seattle’s landmark Cinerama Theatre. Personally, while I enjoy this buoyant and lively song-and-dance spectacular (inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet) as much as the next person, I’ve always had a little trouble wondering what all the fuss is about. It’s entertaining, yes, but one of the greatest movie musicals of all time? Sorry, as good as it is, give me The Band Wagon or Gigi over this one any day.

Rating: 3 (out of 4) ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction October 24, 9:30 PM Admiral Theater The community of Port Gamble, Washington is shaken to its core after zombies rise from the grave and start eating everyone in sight. Locally produced zombie-comedy is a total graphically grotesque hoot, filled with gore, laughs and even a little political commentary. It makes Zombieland look like Plan 9 from Outer Space. A popular hit at this year’s Seattle International Film Festival, the chance to see this delightful and bloody splatter-fest is an opportunity horror fanatics simply shouldn’t miss.

Fagbug October 24, 2 PM Central Cinema Slight if exceedingly cute documentary chronicling filmmaker Erin Davies’ 58-day road trip through some of the United States’ most conservative regions driving a vandalized VW Beetle with the word “fag” spraypainted across the door. Many of the reactions are both disgusting and disheartening, but a great many can’t help but surprise, as the reception she receives is not always – or continued from cover even usually – the one I expected.

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Rock ‘n’ Roll ACT Theatre Through November 8 It can sometimes be difficult to understand the plays of acclaimed British playwright Tom Stoppard. Rock ‘n’ Roll, despite its populist title, is a steep climb. The production side of the play, at ACT Theatre, is a vibrant, vigorous dance, with strong actors and powerful emotions. The script side is didactic (intended for instruction) and full of polemics (the art of controversy). The two do not mesh very well.

The script dwells on the political suppression of dissent in the Czech Republic from 1968 through about 1990. Jan, a Czech student at Cambridge, goes back to Prague with only his large collection of rock and roll records. We are to believe that the possession of these “Western” recordings is a revolutionary act. Jan (Matthew Floyd Miller in an intense but overly genial characterization) seems to feel that the records are an expression of ultimate freedom unavailable to the everyday Joe in Czechoslovakia. Much of the audience may not remember or even know that rock music claimed to be the savior of the earth back in the day.

Jan stays home and doesn’t want to get involved when his friend comes by with petitions to sign. Eventually, his record collection does get him in hot water. He is arrested and jailed, presumably for some sort of political sedition (incitement of rebellion against a government). His collection is trashed in a highly stylized and effective technical feat.

There is a parallel family in England that intersects with Jan and his beliefs: Max, an

ardent Communist professor, his wife Eleanor, a professor of poetry, one guesses, and the young daughter, Esme, who is in love with Jan and keeps a torch lit for him when he leaves England. Max (Denis Arndt) is the voice of the idealist, the Communist who believes in the purity of the ideal regardless of how ugly reality gets in the Soviet Union or the Eastern Bloc. He never stops believing that communism can still be the pure concept of “everyone performing to his ability, everyone given according to his need.” The political manifestations are not a barrier to his stubborn, persistent belief.

Eleanor (Anne Allgood) teaches the poetry of Sappho, the classic Greek love poetess. Yet, she teaches in a rigid, intellectual style. We meet her after her first bout with cancer, when she has already had a mastectomy. Shortly after the play begins, she loses her battle. Allgood has the most devastating emotional moment in the play as she struggles with cancer and her fear that her husband is just waiting for her to die. Max does his best to reassure her, but it’s an intellectual kind of reassurance.

This is the dichotomy of the play: the “machine” of the brain versus the heart/feelings.

Sappho and the Gods, and Pan, who seduces with music, versus rationality of controlled thought. The trouble is that the play tries to tell that story so intellectually that it leaves a significant amount of the audience behind or frustrated. Stoppard also repeats himself three, four or five times in the first act. The play is filled with dialectic (interaction of conflicting ideas) dialogue. The second act is easier to follow, though the all-too-happy ending after all this intellectualism feels completely overdone.

Director Kurt Beattie, as usual, has chosen outstanding actors for the cast, and they all work together like clockwork. Denis Arndt is the glue that holds them all together, though Matthew Floyd Miller seems to have the main role. Matthew Smucker, also as usual, provides an exceptional, versatile set, though an awful lot of it comes up from below, which can be distracting. The first student to make an appearance was the incredibly masculine and sexy Kayge, one of the show’s star performers. The tall, muscular Kayge donned a silver and black android-like outfit, which he stripped off piece by shiny piece. A natural onstage, the exhibitionist began to school the audience on sex appeal and what a Boylesque star is meant to be. Kayge’s performance was what an all-male dance revue would look like on a futuristic planet.

The boys of Boylesque 101 certainly did

their homework. Each piece was so amazingly different from the others it created a sense of excitement where you just had to ask yourself, “What can possibly happen next?” Throughout the night, the men delivered Madrona Green, a British lad in a dress who smells a flower that makes him release himself of his frock; Hugh G Cockamamie, a schoolboy wearing a propeller hat who, while in detention, strips down to his propeller skivvies; Captain Jackaloff, a Baltic Sea pirate obsessed with knots and rope, which the good captain reveals is covering his booty and jewels; Teddy Bare, a hopeless romantic who, while trying to set up for a picnic dinner, spills red wine on his tattered suit, which he inevitably steps out of; Sweet Prince of Darkness, a boy who, while working out, is seduced by a plate of cupcakes, eventually stripping due to a sugar high; and

Dr. Edwin J Fancypants III, who, due to the scorching temperatures at his tropical medical outpost, is forced to strip off his white coat in order to cool off.

The girls of Boylesque 101 were a hit as well. The women created such an illusion that, for the most part, the audience couldn’t tell that the “man” onstage was actually a “she.” It was, for all intents and purposes, gender bending at its best. The audience enjoyed El Aguila, a Spanish matador and superhero who strategically shimmies out of cape and costume; Mickey Doe Eyes, the burlesque Super Mario Brother who strips in hopes of seducing a cardboard cutout of the Princess from the famous video game; Mr. Vincent Lightning, a New Jersey private eye who escapes his captors by stripping out of chains and detective outfit; and Army Private Maximilian Pride, a military

the light on stage into spots of intensity. But the main accompaniment to the entire production, not surprisingly, is the sound by Brendan Patrick Hogan, since he has to put together a vast arsenal of rock and roll classics, some of which whine tinnily from an onstage record player, and others that blast the audience with walls of sound.

The recital’s standout performer was the sleek and sexy Jean du Jour, “The French Quarter Whore.” Dancing to “Hey Big Spender” Jean paraded the stage counting money and wearing a very original white and silver outfit. The talented performer is meant to be onstage, and Jean clearly loved every minute of his fabulous number. Part model, part dancer, and all Boylesque, Jean du Jour is sex, style, and entertainment at its best.

“In the beginning of the class, there was this wonderful awkwardness among the students,” Jean told SGN. “But, we quickly turned into a very supportive, talented, and gorgeous group of people. I love taking my clothes off in front of them!”

Jean said he recommends the class, and has particularly high praise for Waxie Moon and Miss Indigo Blue.

“They are like hanging out with royalty and listening to tales of the Wild West and amazing feats of magic,” he told SGN. “They are the epitome of the male/female counterparts reversed, and then reversed again. Indigo has these wonderful abilities to demonstrate anything on the spot, while Waxie shares insights and ideas that flip switches ‘on’ in the brain.”

At the end of the recital, each student walked across the stage to the sounds of “Pomp and Circumstance” to retrieve their diploma from Headmistress Miss Indigo Blue.

The Academy of Burlesque Boylesque 101 graduation recital was an absolute guilty pleasure that I highly recommend. The music selection, outstanding entertainment, and artistic expression create the perfect cacophony of sensual and seductive appeal.

The Academy of Burlesque was founded in 2003 by Miss Indigo Blue and offers courses in basic and advanced teasing, twirling, dance and performance techniques. The Academy is now housed in West Hall, offering classes Monday-Saturday in the Burlesque related arts. The next Boylesque 101 class is scheduled for March 2010. Celebrating 36 Years!

Abe Lincoln in Illinois big and sprawling, as impressive as the man It is clear that she means to make Lincoln fulfill that destiny. Later on, there is a moment where she becomes completely inappropriate “in company.” This is supposed to demonstrate her mental breakdown later in life, but it’s so out of context that it’s just confusing.

The stage is dressed simply by Mikiko Suzuki MacAdams, with scene changes accomplished with singing cowfolk swinging around chairs and coverings. Music by Gretta Harley helps to break up the evening and flavor the play. John Ackerman is the main musician on stage, and his accompaniment is very sweet.

Director Sheila Daniels harnesses all the acting power on stage and does a good job keeping the energy going. The rest of the cast is solid and the story is interesting, especially if you’re not very aware of Lincoln’s history or struggles. The play demonstrates that he was an orator, but doesn’t really show how he got his facility for making these fancy speeches. It would be nice to have that be clearer. He was a gifted orator, as the Gettysburg Address attests.

Lincoln shows a bit of what must have been a lot of charm (to get so far) in a scene with Ann Rutledge, his first love. Lochtefeld may be more charming than Lincoln was.

He is certainly a captivating character.

This is an easy way for teens to learn a little history. If you know a teen who is not booked to see it through his or her school, do think about taking the teen with you.

Abe Lincoln in Illinois Intiman Theatre Through November 15 Robert E. Sherwood won a Pulitzer Prize for drama with his 1939 play Abe Lincoln in Illinios, now being presented by Intiman Theatre. This is a big, sprawling play, spanning the years before Lincoln becomes a politician until just after he gets elected.

It details his transformation from a solitary man with a let-the-neighbors-be philosophy – where he didn’t like slavery, but didn’t rail against it – to a full-out abolitionist. The play has over 40 characters in it, which is hard to produce in these expensive times, but Intiman succeeded in casting 19 actors to fill all those roles.

This worthy effort casts Erik Lochtefeld as Lincoln. He is outstanding in showing us Lincoln’s reluctance, transformation and growth – he also has a great many words to memorize, so you should prepare yourself for a long sit. The play clocks in at about three hours, including two intermissions.

The first two acts account for much of the meat of the play, with the third hopefully stirring you with several actual speeches, either by Lincoln or his political opponent Stephen Douglas (forthrightly played by R. Hamilton Wright). Depending on your interest in history, that third act might be as watchable as the first two acts, or that may be where you get bogged down.

WHO WERE SONDHEIM’S EARLY INFLUENCES? Sondheim started playing piano at age seven, showing natural talent. After his parents divorced, his mother moved them next door to Oscar Hammerstein II, composer of Oklahoma and Show Boat, who became a mentor and surrogate father figure. He showed Hammerstein an early work, who took the protégé aside going over the submission point by point. Sondheim later said, “I learned more that afternoon than most do in a lifetime.”

WHAT SUBJECT MATTERS INFLUENCE SONDHEIM’S WORK? Sondheim’s work has gathered lyrical inspiration from many sources, including Shakespeare (West Side Story), strippers (Gypsy), and Venice (Do I Hear A Waltz).

Given the chance to write both music and lyrics, Sondheim’s compositions exploded, finding inspiration in an Ingmar Bergman film (A Little Night Music), a photograph of a theater in ruins (Follies), a Seurat painting (Sunday in the Park with George), classic fairy tales (Into the Woods), murderous legends (Sweeney Todd), and attempted murders of U.S. presidents (Assassins) among many other subjects just as diverse.

Personal experiences also play a part. When presented with an early draft of one score, a producer criticized the music, saying “There’s nothing to hum,” and as for the lyric, “ Don’t be so clever.” Both quotes would appear in later lyrics for other shows.

Frank Sinatra, Shirley Bassey and Judy Collins all achieved hits with “Send in the Clowns” (A Little Night Music), a song written 48 hours before the musical’s auspicious opening.

It ran for only 16 performances despite a Tony-nominated score. It also ended an 11show collaboration between Sondheim and producer/director Hal Prince; they wouldn’t work together for another 22 years.

WHAT ARE THE DISTINCTIONS OF A SONDHEIM SONG? When seeing a Sondheim musical, there are two major stars: the music and the lyrics.

Like any good musical, the score is to set the characters’ moods, each separate song responsible for expressing thoughts or continuing a plotline.

For Sondheim lyrics, attention must be paid. Crediting a rhyming dictionary and thesaurus as being important tools, his lyrics and music have always pushed boundaries between traditional theater and the realms of the contemporary. Sondheim’s music is recognizable by its “patter” format; the music is usually at a faster pace and the lyrics can be a listing of tonguetwisting words. For the song “Not Getting Married Today” (Company), the bride-to-be is frenzied and it comes across in the song’s hectic speed that rings of honest raw nerves and bridal panic: “Go, can’t you go? Why is nobody listening? Goodbye, go and cry at another person’s wake. If you’re quick for a kick, you can pick up a christening, but please on my knees, there’s a human life at stake!” When asked if she could stay on the melody, Beth Fowler exhaustedly asked, “Could you remind me again what it is?”

A Sondheim song doesn’t have to be complex. With the same poetic similes of a snowfall (Evening Primrose) – “I remember snow, soft as feathers, sharp as thumbtacks, coming down like lint” – Sondheim gives prosaic vision to the murderous promises

Stephen Sondheim will be interviewed

by New York Times critic Frank Rich as part as a public forum. Sondheim has written the music and/or lyrics for 16 Broadway musicals, inspiring more than four separate Broadway revues and concerts based on his works. He’s been nominated for 24 Tony Awards, winning 15, including one for Lifetime Achievement. He’s won two Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album (Sweeney Todd) and for Song of the Year (“Send in the Clowns”). His Academy Award nominations number at three with one win for Best Song, “Sooner or Later.” The musical Sunday in the Park with George became one of seven plays ever to win the Pulitzer Prize and Sondheim is a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors for Lifetime Achievement in Theater. His most recent musical was Road Show in 2008 at the Off-Broadway Public Theater. Currently on Broadway is a revival of West Side Story, while a new production of A Little Night Music with Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones will be opening on November 24, 2009.

Nashville earns its “Music City” stripes

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer I was in Nashville two weeks ago, and I had the best time ever. As a music aficionado, this Southern hotspot took my breath away with its legendary concert venues, famed recording studios, cool live music clubs, and an independent record store cradled in a quasi-Gayborhood. I’ll have plenty to say about Nashville, nicknamed “Music City,” in an upcoming travel feature, but allow me to give you a sneak peek by pointing out its vibrant music scene.

First and foremost, a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum (www. countrymusichalloffame.com) is a nobrainer; it just has to be done. Here, the most highly regarded country artists are inducted by a committee of peers and other experts in the field each year – the rotunda, where plaques of every inductee are displayed, ranks way up there with the most beloved spots I’ve ever stepped foot on, such as Wimbledon’s center court and the Eiffel Tower. Of course, I blew kisses to Dolly Parton’s plaque.

No trip to Nashville is complete without a stop at the Grand Ole Opry (www.opry. com), which holds the Guinness world record for the longest-running radio program on the planet. This music landmark has two homes, one at a shopping plaza 10 minutes from downtown and a seasonal setup at the Ryman, which I’ll get to in a minute. On the night I visited, the Opry celebrated its 84th birthday with performances by Kathy Mattea, Diamond Rio, Ray Price, and a wonder-

ful bluegrass session by banjo extraordinaire Mike Snider and his band. I got a backstage tour, allowing me access to dressing rooms that Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood and Carrie Underwood have all utilized – I particularly enjoyed the “Porter Wagoner Room,” especially the bathroom with its black commode and a framed poster of his Madison Square Garden concert as an opening act for The White Stripes.

The Ryman Auditorium (www.ryman. com) is located in the heart of Nashville, an iconic venue to music talent around the globe. This is the exact place where Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash met backstage, and where a range of artists from Coldplay to Bruce Springsteen to Tori Amos have played to crowds seated in pews - this was a tabernacle long before it became a noted concert hall. Daily tours, including backstage peeks, provide rare glimpses of dressing rooms that Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, and television acts like Minnie Pearl, Grandpa Jones and Stringbean once stood in.

A drive through “Music Row” is a must.

It is a section of Nashville that houses major record labels, artist management offices, songwriter organizations (ASCAP, etc.), and a famous little building called Studio B (www.countrymusichalloffame.com). It’s here that “Jolene” by Dolly Parton, “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” by Elvis Presley, “Crying” by Roy Orbison, and other classics by The Everly Brothers, Charley Pride and Merle Haggard were recorded. Still utilized today as a recording studio and as a

workshop for music-minded Belmont University students, it’s a place that made me shiver with excitement from head to toe. I swear the ghost of “The King” was standing in the corner with a peanut butter and banana sandwich.

The Groove (www.thegroovenashville. wordpress.com) is an independent record shop in the artsy neighborhood of East Nashville, the closest thing to a Gay district in the city. Catering to the indie rock listener, the store is stacked with old and current CDs, imports, vinyl, and unique boxed sets.

The owner/manager was easy on the eye and was, as you’d expect, quite proud of Nashville’s solid mark on the music map.

Finally, my Nashville visit wouldn’t have seemed perfect without a run-in with resident Dierks Bentley. I didn’t see him faceto-face, but I did have cocktails with some-

Toran’s water-themed concert lacked fire

one close to him at my hotel (Downtown Sheraton, if you must know) who informed me that he’s headed to Seattle in the coming months for a very, very special event – mum’s the word, but I’m already on the guest list for it – so stay glued for exclusive coverage. Bentley and several of his friends, including Wynona Judd, Darius Rucker and Michelle Branch, helped raise $215,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network by way of a motorcycle ride and live performance last weekend in Nashville. What an amazing guy – sexy, talented, and giving!

If you love music as much as I do, Nashville is your next stop. Jack White, Kings of Leon, Ben Folds, and Nicole Kidman are just a few of the people you might run into, besides the many country celebrities, who all live in this fabulous Southern belle. Admittedly, I left Nashville wanting more!

Pianist Sylvia Toran October 13 Meany Hall, UW campus Spanish pianist Sylvia Toran began her recital by dedicating it to the memory of the recently departed Alicia de Larocca. Unfortunately, her announced respect for that passionate artist was not in any way evident in this evening’s performance. Even her manner was more that of a journeyman doing an assigned job than of an artist fervently wishing to share her love of music with us.

Indeed, in moments of intended passion, she merely worked harder and communicated no fire or excitement.

Technically, Toran was a competent pianist with a lovely touch and beautiful tone.

Despite being on the concert stage for more than 20 years, she woefully misjudged in picking her program. The music was all associated with one theme: water. The trouble was that it began to sound all alike, totally lacking in contrast. While I didn’t quite get seasick, I often lost interest as my mind

floated away, seeking something more exciting than rocking waves of similar sounds, however lovely they might be.

Indeed, the pianist seemed uncertain about the program, having changed it from the printed program not once but twice!

There was a green printed program change inserted in the Encore magazine, and then she announced an additional change before she began. Perhaps she sensed that all was not well but lacked the vision to correct it.

The program included three pieces by Albéniz: “Evocación,” “El Puerto,” and a longer work called “La Vega.” These were interspersed with two selections from Images, Book I by Debussy, Ravel’s “Jeux d’eau,” “Les Jeux d’eau all Villa d’Este” by Liszt, and finally Falla’s “Fantasia baetica.”

None of it caught fire, drowned as it was by so much “eau.”

I’m told that the best of all was an encore

by Bach, but I had not the patience to stay, not expecting anything so refreshing as Bach!

Celebrating 36 Years!

Traviata’s Sunday cast not to be missed Rozarii Lynch

by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer Verdi’s La Traviata at Seattle Opera McCaw Hall through October 31 As most readers know, Seattle Opera usually presents two casts of each production: the opening-night cast of “big name” singers, and the Sunday matinee/Friday night cast of less well-known, usually younger artists. It sometimes happens that the “second cast” gives a far better show than the

more expensive singers.

Such is certainly the case with the current production of Verdi’s La Traviata. (Literal translation: the woman who strayed.) All three of the major roles were superior in all ways on Sunday to the Saturday cast. Mind you, the opening night was more than competent and was a good show. But on Sunday everything caught fire; the experience became memorable and indeed something to write home about.

Adding to the effect were the attractive sets and costumes, rented from San Francisco Opera. This production was set in the

proper time period, namely around 1850.

Both of the party scenes were spectacular, with the second act particularly effective in looking deeper than the actual depth of the stage. (The principal dancers had considerably more snap on Sunday than on the previous evening.) Lavish costumes and effective lighting made for a visual feast.

Special mention should be made of the exhilarating conducting of Brian Garman, making his Seattle Opera debut on the main stage. Garman, music director of the Seattle Opera Young Artists Program, demonstrated superb control of both the pit and the stage.

He kept everything moving well, but also slowed down for emotional emphasis when appropriate. He was especially sensitive to Nuccia Focile’s need for extra rests between phrases in Act One. And therein lay one of the big failings of the opening night cast. Nuccia Focile, a Seattle favorite, is perhaps the ideal voice for lighter roles such as Nedda in I Pagliacci.

But Violetta is no lightweight! Act One requires vocal skills of a coloratura with easy high notes, while Acts Two and Three need a voice with weight and “gravitas,” which Focile lacks. She was clearly afraid of both the coloratura and especially of the high notes.

She had to take big rests between phrases, thus destroying both dramatic and musical effects.

A great Violetta must revel in those high notes, tossing them off with defiant, if hysterical, glee. On Sunday, Eglise Gutiérrez did just that, adding a spot-on E above high C to end Act One, leaving the audience in wild amazement. More important, she put the drama into the voice. Easily as fine a visual actress as Focile, she used Verdi’s genius for molding a vocal line to dramatic effect, something Focile seldom managed.

Gutiérrez had a much warmer voice, capable of more power for the big moments, and a much broader tonal palette with which to show emotion. She moved us, all the while showering us in the vocal splendor of her perfectly produced, burnished brown tone.

I say, you folks could think of how Everett’s practically the murder capitol of the Northwest as something really lewd and focus on doing something about that, rather than harass some scantily clad baristas. True, if crime is being committed, do something about that, but them wearing next to nothing being lewd? Honey, get over it already!

Now for the part you like about this column, where I tell you what I’ve enjoyed and what I recommend. First, let me just say, Macy’s, I would write about you like I constantly do about Sephora (my fave place to treat myself to new makeup and get honeybunny makeovers in her grrl drag) and Nordstrom, but hey, when you refuse to give me a sample to write about, and are snooty to boot, I’m not feelin’ the love, ya know? Maybe chill out and just hand out a few samples and you’ll get in on the splendor that is being praised by myself, hmmm?

Yessiree.

Since this one had already finished the last Lipstick and Lust (that I hope you enjoyed!), I couldn’t mention that the lovely WiFi cafe where this one internets (now that my home computer is dead and gone – paging Bill Gates, a donation of one, please?) had a run-in with a nutty robber. Me, I can’t see why someone would rob these sweet folks, or what they could possibly get out of a place that is mostly populated with students and geeks on computers and only sells beverages and pastries. Just hope they catch that rat before he does it again. And shame on him for scaring my fave baristas.

On a happier note, this one finally got to meet the whole extended family of my sweetie/slave at a celebration recently, and honey, though I was hella nervous, everything went swimmingly. I even found out I’d lost three pounds when I did my weekly swim workout last Sunday, and this after pigging out on some of the best food to cross these lips in a queen’s age. Dieting is a good thing, especially since I’m not starving myself – just eating healthy – but birthday cake is something I could not and did not pass up, my little pumpkins.

Oh, and after that big gathering, me and my honey bunny came back to The Digs and got busy so much, this one nearly fell on the floor from having my bell rang so many times! Yeah, we’re set for life, me and my darling one, indeed we are.

We also boogied like wild thangs at the Mercury last Friday before the big family shindig, and did some sexy things that I’m sure shocked some of the more serious goth regulars. Nothing like a real scene

in progress to get eyebrows raised, honey, let me tell ya. And, babies, we both looked gawgeous, especially my darling one in grrl drag, showing a little leg. We’re definitely going out dancing again, maybe swing dancing in the near future.

And to the sweet androgyne in the glittery pants, honey, to us you were “Mr. Mercury” that night, so keep up the being fabulous no matter who gets snooty with you. Nice high heel boots, too, baby.

So, what else has this little kitty been up to besides dancing the night away, meeting my loved one’s family and traveling on overcrowded buses with sometimes-mean drivers? Well, my sweetie and I continue to train at the Divine Ms. Shima (check out the phone number for Way Of Life Wellness Center in the last L&L) and get all cleared out of negative energy, and I’ve been enjoying watching Being Erica on the Canadian station. Good Lesbian and Gay plotlines and writing that doesn’t insult my intelligence.

Also loving my workout, especially Zumba, but what I really love is the new pistachio commercial featuring a dominatrix (though last I looked, it wasn’t on late at night with the other “get cracking” examples on the ad, making me wonder if they’ve pulled it, and darn it if they have).

Also, this one and her sweetie tried out some hot cider at Cowgirls Espresso in Renton (the Benson Plaza one) and checked out two dishy babes who were serving us and told them we definitely don’t mind them being in bikinis while they’re giving us our fix of hot things to drink. Shame on those ladies in Everett who are now trying to pressure their city council into making it a “lewd act” for their bikini baristas to stay that way.

Put the silver on your lashes and hey, you are too hot to handle.

Okay, so that’s it for now, and to those folks who fired the model for being “too fat” after Photoshopping her body into a shape that resembled something alien, shame, shame, shame. Also, what the hell was the deal last Sunday with the street cleaning crew steamwashing and power washing the sidewalk so that folks waiting for the bus were blasted by whatever toxic crap they were using? That’s my taxpayer dollars at work? Then, honey, we need a change in leadership in “rat city” if you ask me. And this after a week of rain, no less.

Silliness and more silliness to this one’s mind.

Fun with my honey and Halloween suggestions

One can only hope we get to see her in Seattle again soon.

While this opera lives or dies by the soprano singing Violetta, her lover, Alfredo, is important too. Tenor Dimitri Pittas (debut) sang very well Saturday night, but he was awkward on the stage. He seldom modulated his attractive sound to show emotion and musical sensitivity. The Sunday Alfredo, Francesco Demuro, making his North American debut, sang with more expression and nuance. His acting and attractive appearance helped make Alfredo’s passion effective. Demuro’s voice is not beefy, yet every note carried into the house with ease and eloquence. A slight suggestion of a sob added Italianate drama to appropriate moments. His tops were easily produced, and his attractive tone was remarkably consistent throughout.

The second-act confrontation between Violetta and Alfredo’s father is for many the highlight of the opera. Here emotion in the voice, as opposed to mere physical gestures, is paramount. The opening night Giorgio of Charles Taylor was loud, but lacked both nuance and bottom notes. Weston Hurt, making his debut on Sunday, excelled with ample volume and a much warmer, more expressive voice. His tone at times suggested the rounded ease of Gordon Hawkins or Leonard Warren.

Seattle Opera filled the lesser roles with excellent singing actors. Standouts included the Gastone of Leodigario del Rosario, Dr. Grenvil sung by Seattle Opera stalwart Byron Ellis, and most especially the Marquis d’Obigny of Jonathan Silvia.

La Traviata is one of the greatest operas for both its story and its vocal demands.

In its Sunday/Friday cast, Seattle Opera showed just how great it can be. (For a superb DVD of this opera, I recommend the Los Angeles production with Renee Fleming, Rolando Villazon, and Renato Bruson.)

Singer-songwriter, pop dynamo, and former Ben Folds Five frontman Ben Folds joined the Seattle Symphony and guest conductor Robert Bernhardt on October 20 at Benaroya Hall for a concert that fans won’t soon forget. I’m an avid fan, and like any good Folds fan, I’ve seen the musical genius in concert many times, but Tuesday’s perfor-

mance with the Symphony was so stunning it left me – and undoubtedly everyone in the audience – feeling like we’d just seen something very special. And, indeed, we had.

Ben Folds is currently touring the U.S. performing with symphony orchestras, a project that began in 2005. Folds has said he loves doing the shows because “it’s a primal rush, playing with 90 people that are all good and well-disciplined.”

As soon as Folds appeared onstage at the modern theater and began to play, a silence fell over the audience. The sound of Folds’ melodic voice and uncharacteristically soft piano playing seemed to mix, in perfect symmetry, with the sound of the orchestra.

This was a statement, an affirmation that this was to be no mere Ben Folds concert; it would be much more than that. The night was a celebration of art, and a music catalog created by one of the best singer-songwriters who, luckily for us all, is still singersongwriting.

The show had many highlights, such as “Not the Same,” where Ben led the audience in a three-part harmony, “Brick,” the haunting song that thrust Ben Folds Five into the international spotlight in 1995, and the fan favorite “One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces.” With its funny lyrics and irony, the song would’ve seemed out of place on the bill had it not been for the raucous playing from the very talented Symphony.

Some songs, many from his solo career, included an over-the-top version of “Cologne,” which Folds explained to the audience is a song he wrote onstage in Germany when he was loopy from taking too much medicine to combat the flu, “Effengton,” a song about a man driving past one small town on his way to another, and a beautiful ode to his daughter, “Gracie.”

The night took on a VH1 Storytellers feel as Folds told the beginnings of each song he performed throughout the show, much to the

audience’s delight. The light audience banter was often comedic, even if he hadn’t intended it to be – Folds is wonderfully awkward, something his fans have come to love about the shy frontman for sometime now.

At one point, Folds turned to the audience and said, “Hi. I’m Ben Folds. For you ticket holders who came to see the Seattle Symphony and don’t know who the hell I am, I’m the guy who wrote these songs.” The beauty of the moment was comedic genius. I looked around and saw the audience as two factions: The jeans and vintage-clad Folds fans, and the suit and tie and cocktail dress Symphony fans. In the end, a winning bet is that Folds gained many new fans Tuesday night.

Folds was beckoned back to the stage by the lure of his fans’ cheers. The Symphony, too, stayed to play “Narcolepsy” for the encore.

After departing the stage for a second time, the audience was hungry for more. Much to everyone’s surprise, Folds reappeared, this time alone, to give the audience a special three-song encore, including “Rockin’ the Suburbs,” “Army,” and “Rock This Bitch,” a Ben Folds tradition where Folds sits at the piano and makes a song up as he goes about the city he’s playing a show in.

It was refreshing to see a show – well, two shows, really – where the artist gave it all he had. Folds blew the audience, and maybe even himself, away. The passion with which he played and the lyrics that he sang were nothing short of amazing.

This program marked Folds’ debut with Seattle Symphony and kicked off the 20092010 Popular Culture series at Benaroya Hall. This year, the series offers an edgier lineup that will include Rufus Wainwright, for example. Joyce Glasgow SGN A&E Writer Steely Dan October 12 and 13 Paramount Theatre Steely Dan swept into Seattle with a large, 13-piece configuration – with a four-part horn section and three backup singers – for two eagerly awaited concerts this past week at the Paramount. The shows featured complete tracks from two different albums, Aja and The Royal Scam, and then rounded out the second part of each show with some of their greatest hits from other albums. Fans were thrilled by songs they have been listening to and loving for sometimes as long as 35 years or more. It was mind-boggling as every single song that they played has been a major hit, and my companion and I marveled at hearing one hit after another.

Donald Fagen and Walter Becker’s music remains timeless, defying classification into any time period or style. Their musicianship, compositions and arrangements are super-sophisticated, utilizing complex jazz chords and harmonies, hybridizing influences of jazz, rock, rhythm and blues, soul, funk and pop into their own one-ofa-kind sound. They are not afraid of using dissidence, adding to their uniqueness and unpredictability. The rhythms are powerful and infectious, and it is almost impossible to contain yourself in your seat. You want to get up and sing and dance joyfully along with the band!

Their lyrics are also intriguing, and can be cynical and sardonic comments on society, culture, and human shortcomings. Sometimes wild and cryptic and nonsequetorial, they are kind of like the musical world’s answer to Salvador Dali’s Surrealist painting; the meanings and images may not be clear, but when you put all the words together, they make sense on a conscious or subconscious level. These dark, ironic, satirical, societal observations are juxtaposed with lively, adventurous melodies. I love singing

their songs and sing their wild lyrics, as do others, full out, as if the themes of the songs have deep, significant personal meaning to me as an individual, no matter how cryptic.

I think that this is particularly amusing.

Both nights at the Paramount were exciting and fun, but I think that the first night, when the album Aja (1977) was played in its entirety, was the better of the two nights. I think Aja is Steely Dan’s crowning glory. It won a Grammy Award, went platinum, and has sold over 5 million copies as the band’s best-selling album. In 2003, Rolling Stone magazine placed it at 145 of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

On both nights, the three backup vocalists swayed sensually and hypnotically throughout the evening, in time with the music. The first night they wore festive and wonderfully glittery, sequined, black cocktail minidresses. On the second night, they went for a more demure look with simple black dresses. Their singing was beautiful and their women’s touch added a lot to the mix.

The band rounded out each evening with other popular hits from their long and illustrious career, including some of my favorite tunes from the 1975 Katy Lied album, songs from the 1980 album Gaucho and 1973’s Countdown to Ecstasy, and numbers from their first album, 1972’s Can’t Buy a Thrill, including “Dirty Work” and their encore piece both nights, “Reelin’ in the Years.”

The stage lighting was detailed and complex with lots of dramatic changes. I found the sound mix a little disappointing; a bit muddled and “soupy,” especially considering the kind of perfectionist fidelity and clarity on Steely Dan’s albums, all made before the advent of 21st-century technology. I didn’t know whether to attribute it to the Paramount’s acoustics or the sound mixing. The instruments could have been more separated, especially the horns, which could have been more clear, forward and bright in their sound. However, the sound overall was fine enough to still enjoy this terrific and

by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer Canyon Sam Mercy’s friend Mischief Bossanova told Mercy about the writer Canyon Sam reading at Elliott Bay Books. Sam is a Lesbian performance artist from San Francisco.

Her book, Sky Train, recounts two visits she made to Tibet 20 years apart and the interviews she did with women there. The excerpts she read were well-written and compelling tales about how Tibetan men felt forced to leave the women behind when the Chinese were invading and bombarding their homes.

The women’s stories reflected those who lived in Tibet before the Chinese occupa-

tion, those who adapted to it, and those who lived in exile. That range of experience added to the impact of her reading.

Mitch Ryder Mercy and her friend Jewel Depthpsychology went to see Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels at the Triple Door. The service was flawless.

Mitch Ryder opened with a rocking version of “Little Latin Lupe Lu.” The back-up band, a much younger version of his original group, was energetic in recreating the music. The singer commented that he still lives in Detroit, where unemployment is 27%, so “I thank you personally for having me here.”

Ryder, who has been playing professionally for 48 years, made jokes about his age and the audience’s age, such as, “Don’t try to get up and give me a standing ovation at the end. We don’t want to have to call ambulances.” He also quipped that the audience might tend toward deafness. Jewel said, “If we weren’t deaf to begin with, we will be after this.”

With Ryder’s age comes confidence in his music. He thrillingly brought off his hits, “Devil in a Blue Dress,” “Jenny Takes a Ride,” and “Sock It To Me Baby.” He also played some newer originals Mercy found compelling, particularly “The Promise,” which she took to be in honor of Obama’s election. Some of the people sitting next to Mercy and Jewel said they were from Detroit and were surprised to find people who weren’t from Michigan there. They thought of Mitch Ryder as a local phenomenon. Jewel explained that the performer was widely played on the radio. Mercy pointed out that he seems to have a following in Europe, too.

Chitresh Das Dance Company Mercy and Cuteness saw the Chitresh Das Dance Company as part of the UW World Music and Theater series. The dancer’s musicians – Kousic Sen on tabla, Jayanta Banerjee on sitar – and Debasish Sarkar’s vocals were outstanding. His company danced the Durga Vandana flowingly. The dance is in honor of the goddess Shakti.

Chitresh Das amazed Mercy and Cuteness with an unscheduled dance piece representing a train going through a number of different landscapes. All he used were his feet and the bells on his legs. Mercy was amazed by that. Cuteness pointed out that we generally think of Western dance as a visual form, while Indian dance addresses all our senses.

With his amazing footwork, it is not surprising that Das was honored for a collaboration with tap dance star Jason Samuels Smith.

Another standout moment of the night was Chitresh Das dancing all the roles of Ghat Bhao Sita Apaharan, about the abduction of the goddess Sita. The transitions between one character and another were amazing.

Das generously explained the story to the audience. His manner toward his musicians and dancers was very respectful.

Ramsey Lewis Mercy and Cuteness were wowed by Ramsey Lewis and his trio at Jazz Alley. The appetizer they ordered was delicious.

Ramsey Lewis’ fingers were long, elegant and confident, and this was reflected in how he played his Steinway. His playing ranged from intense to softly tender. His

trio was tight. Mercy enjoyed watching the way drum player Leon Joyce’s face lit up as the bandleader signaled his solos and also handing the direction back to Lewis. Bass player Larry Gray also exchanged smiles of satisfaction with Lewis. Both stopped playing and watched the piano player when he played, as if they had never heard those particular riffs before. Maybe they hadn’t.

The group opened with a song aptly titled “Sparks,” from their new CD, Songs From the Heart. Their second number, “Love,” which did not make the cut on the new CD, was gorgeous. They continued with Stevie Wonder’s “Living For the City,” which featured hot drums. A sweet rendition of “Body and Soul” followed. Lewis took “Strangers in the Night” apart and put it back together beautifully. There was nice humor and improvisation between the pianist and the drummer in “Just A Closer Walk with Me.” That number also had a lush bass solo.

The trio’s rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” reverberated joyously. The audience gave the group a standing ovation and the trio came back to play “In With the In Crowd.”

One thing Mercy likes about Jazz Alley is that the musicians walk through the audience. That gave Cuteness a chance to say, “That was beautiful” to Ramsey Lewis. She was touched by how humble he seemed in saying, “Thank you.” They are a group of musicians that clearly are masters of their art and enjoy performing.

Cuteness heard a woman saying to her father, who must have bought her a ticket, ”You have made me so happy,” as she brushed tears from her eyes. Mercy and Cuteness had been moved by that piece, too.

Referendum 71 Mercy and Cuteness sent in their ballots in favor of Referendum 71, because they hope to keep those domestic partnership rights.

Check to see if they still have space available at discoversweet.com. Mercy’s friend Destiny thinks the group might offer cut rates if they still have empty staterooms as time to depart approaches. Mercy hopes they do.

by Jessica Price SGN A&E Writer The Horrors October 6 Neumos It seems that while no one was looking, The Horrors accomplished the unthinkable: they became a completely different band.

Judging from their performance at Neumos October 6, this coming-of-age is a win for old fans and undoubtedly will help the band pick up a whole lot of new ones. When they were simply a fright-rock group of young Londoners, something about The Horrors definitely piqued my interest, but a genuine shift in sound and vision has bolstered their entire foundation.

Having seen the band in 2007 in support of the entertaining but not entirely great album Strange House, I noticed right away that The Horrors’ onstage attitude circa 2009 was completely upgraded. Nowadays, they don’t seem so full of false bravado; they just do what they do best, plain and simple. At the moment, that happens to be a far richer sound, owing as much to

My Bloody Valentine as to The Cramps or Bauhaus. Sticking almost entirely to Primary Colours (nominated for the U.K.’s prestigious Mercury Prize this year), the band tore through “Mirror’s Image,” “Who Can Say,” “Three Decades” and the swirling “Do You Remember.” Slow-burning melodrama never sounded better than in “I Only Think of You.” Truthfully, the songs are all so catchy that the set was a seamless assault of beautifully inspired reverb rock.

Physically, Faris Baduwan (vocals), Tom Cowan (bass), Joshua “Von Grimm” Hayward (guitar), Rhys “Spider” Webb (keyboards) and “Coffin” Joe Spurgeon (drums) look a bit less heavy on the Munsters chic, although there’s still plenty of sharp skinny pants and striped boatneck shirts. They’re actually adorable because they don’t seem to grasp just how good they are. If they do, maybe they aren’t as keenly aware of how refreshing it is to hear a truly great record tweaked out and live in 2009.

“Scarlet Fields” and “Primary Colours” never sounded better. The only nod to the past was “Sheena Is a Parasite” during the encore, as well as a fantastic cover of Sui-
