The 1991 works entered PNB’s repertoire last season and was an immediate hit. Danced to music by Mozart, the short work features classical figures, powdered wigs, tonguein-cheek stand-alone black dresses, propelled at times by the dancers, sometimes by sheer magic. Add fencing foils, serious fencing, clever choreography, and you have an instant audience favorite. Unsettling Let Me In a worthy remake

The Social Network makes you feel dirty

by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer The Social Network Opening October 1 The Social Network will make you feel dirty. Not the “naughty parts engorged” sort of dirty, but the “humanity is void of any redeeming qualities” sort of dirty. I think they call it nihilism.

The Social Network tells the story of Mark Zuckerberg, the Harvard dropout behind Facebook. It’s a tale brimming with egos, ambition, decadence, and ethical lapses.

I walked out

feeling ambivalent about the film. However, it wasn’t because the film was lacking; it was because it’s like watching a Shakespearean tragedy that ends on a high note after all the bloodletting is over. To be scientific: It made me feel yucky.

For those of you using FB to contact old friends, stay in touch with family, post pix of your kids, or play Farmville, you should know that every time you click, every time you post, every time you send a message, FB is storing information about you. They are in the business of gathering information, and they are really, really good at it. Not to go all conspiracy theory, but I wonder what they do with it all?

If you’re playing Farmville, by the by, you should rethink that decision. Don’t you know we all see you’re growing cartoon crops and we think, “Doesn’t that person have better things to do?”

The Social Network is an excellent, if undeniably dark, film. Director David Fincher knows to get out of the way of an engrossing story. Sure, he puts the Fincher stamp

on the rowing sequence which ends up looking like it should be in a different film, but for the rest of the movie he lets the elegant photography of Jeff Cronenweth, the incisive dialogue of Aaron Sorkin, and the unexpected musical score of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross provide the frame on which the true story hangs.

This is a decidedly “male” story, and could have easily become just another college guy flick. While much of the credit goes to the filmmakers, the young cast deserves kudos for their superlative contribution.

Justin Timberlake is the real thing. I loved him on Saturday Night Live (now there’s a box I wouldn’t mind being in) and he was rock-solid in Alpha Dog. He’s made some questionable choices, but here, playing Napster co-founder and smarmy hipster Sean Parker, he proves he’s in the movie biz to stay.

Jesse Eisenberg may be the hardest-working young actor in film today. He’s on track to have eight projects released from 2009 to 2010. The kid brings the goods, too. He channels Facebook guru Mark Zuckerberg’s idiosyncratic egomania perfectly, leaving the viewer dismayed. Remember, Zuckerberg is the guy who had the following exchange with a friend about how control of Facebook gave him access to information on fellow Harvard students:

After seeing the movie, I might encourage Zuckerberg to double that if he wants us to believe he’s really a nice guy. Regardless of Zuck’s ethics, The Social Network is definitely worth a look.

original and are only hinted at in Reeves’ sometimes a bit too minimalist script. She paints a picture full of weary and exhausted perspective, and even though she warns Owen the two of them can’t be friends, the longing in her eyes and her yearning for a type of companionship she can never have are as readily apparent as drops of blood in a white, snow-covered field.

I will say that Alfredson did a bit better job of developing Abby’s stone-faced benefactor and caretaker than Reeves does, and while Jenkins does what he can with his portrayal, my emotions for the guy never ran past surface-level. There is also something to be said about the almost laughable use of CGI, and while that probably has more to do with budgetary constraints than it does with anything else, that doesn’t make the few scenes utilizing the technology any less obvious. Finally, a key plot point in regards to one character’s gender is pretty much (if not quite entirely) dropped, lessoning the impact of Owen’s climactic decision – if only just a little.

But as remakes go, Reeves’ take on Lindqvist’s novel is remarkably close to being as good as Alfredson’s was. As unnecessary as it is, Let Me In firmly stands on its own as an unsettling piece of intelligently literate horror, one genre fans willing to take it on its own merits will almost certainly enjoy.

Let Me In Opening October 1 The 2008 Swedish import Let the Right One In took the booming vampire horror subgenre and gave it a much-needed infusion of both smarts and adrenaline. Director Tomas Alfredson adapted John Ajvide Lindqvist’s (who also wrote the screenplay) acclaimed novel of a lonely and bullied adolescent boy’s surreal friendship with a vampire trapped in the body of a 12-year-old and made it feel brand new. With unparalleled restraint and beauteous visual ingenuity, he achieved something close to sinisterly spooky perfection, crafting a tense and terrific character study audiences couldn’t help but be drawn to.

It almost goes without saying that Cloverfield director Matt Reeves’ remake, Let Me In, starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Richard Jenkins, and Elias Koteas, is completely unnecessary. The original film is barely two years old, so the chances a viewer who has seen both would be able to separate one from the other are just about nil.

As I’ve seen both, writing this review is far more difficult than I ever thought it would be. The simple truth is that Reeves has done something extraordinary with Let Me In. His film is an incredibly strong piece of work – all of the actors turned in expert performances that got under my skin and burrowed their way into my subconscious.

It is a deeply visceral, highly unsettling drama, and had the memory of Alfredson’s

field.

But this isn’t true.

Lady Antebellum October 25 WaMu Theater It’s not what Lady Antebellum has done in 2010, it’s what they haven’t done. Tower of Power justifies its name

I feel we are representing Seattle boylesque by having a name that’s a little in-your-face and slightly jarring to the conservative general public, as Seattle’s neo-burlesque is not your classic bump ‘n’ grind,” said EmpeROAR Fabulous!!!.

One of the coolest things about GAZM is that all the performers are good enough to know when and when not to take themselves too seriously. Comedy is a theme in GAZM, and all the funny boylesque numbers are over-the-top and well-done, and four were in a constant state of costume change both on stage and off.

GAZM began with Jean du Jour appearing onstage to do a drag/burlesque number to Lady Gaga’s “Telephone.” Jean, who has been doing boylesque for about a year, is very good at using his sex appeal to make the audience laugh.

“Though, to be fair, I have been somewhat of an exhibitionist many years now,” Jean told SGN. The Luminous Pariah later strips down from a gigantic bird costume to the voice of famous BBC nature documentary broadcaster and narrator Sir David Attenborough.

In addition to the lighthearted parts of the show, the beauty of boylesque/burlesque that many fans seek is fully present in GAZM’s show.

Tower of Power Cuteness couldn’t go to Tower of Power (TOP) at Jazz Alley because it was a late show on a weeknight. So Mercy’s friend Divinity snatched up the second comp. Divinity had last seen TOP opening for Z. Z. Top a long time ago. She said there were no vocals in those days, just a wonderful instrumental group. Mercy thinks the addition of Larry Braggs’ virtuoso vocals is a happy addition.

He is matched in mastery by the rest of the group: Emilio Castillo (tenor sax), Stephen “Doc” Kupka (baritone sax), Rocco Prestia (bass), Adolfo Acosta (trumpet), Mic Gillette (trumpet and trombone), Tom Pollitzer (sax), David Garibaldi (drums), Roger Smith (keyboards), and Mike Harper (guitar). Divinity, herself Italian-American, pointed out there were a lot of Italian names in the band. The group has played together for 43 years, and it’s as if they can read each other’s minds.

The concert started out with the upbeat “We Came to Play,” which segued into “Soul with a Capital S.” The audience couldn’t resist dancing. “Could You Say” continued in the same vein. Braggs joked, “We are going to play as many songs as we can in 20 minutes, three of those devoted to songs on the serious side.” “We Are Going to Get Serious” continued the fast tempo and

had a delicious keyboard, tenor, and alto sax solos.

The band slowed down with “Something is Happening to Me.” An elegant trumpet was featured.

“Maybe Baby” returned to up the tempo and had a luscious keyboard moment. “Living in a Rubble” was also fast and flawless.

Arias and Douglass will be performing original work along with material from Ms. Holiday as only Joey Arias can conjure her.

ond performance of the show, to a classical instrumental piece, is the best I’ve seen him do yet – when he lights his costume on fire onstage, it’s something that’s not to be missed. EmpeROAR Fabulous!!! has been in the art form since April of 2008.

“In my eyes, GAZM was the joining of four men who have chosen the art of the tease as a means of self-expression in an attempt to garner our diverse talents and backgrounds and create something different for people to enjoy,” Paris told SGN. “There is a lot of burlesque in Seattle and I think it’s important for boylesque performers, who are definitely the minority in the burlesque community, to make their presence known. I think GAZM helped draw attention to the rise of boylesque in our community,” said Paris.

The credentials and history of the boys of GAZM are astounding – it’s no wonder the four are some of the premier boyslesque artists in the city.

EmpeROAR Fabulous!!! holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Cornish College of the Arts, and Paris Original has an extensive background in ballet and contemporary dance. Paris has performed ballet with Evergreen City Ballet, MK Ballet, Ballet Northwest, Spectrum Dance Theater, and Coriolis Dance Collective. All have had a love of performance since their youth.

Both the Luminous Pariah and Jean du Jour are graduates of the Boylesque 101 class put on last year by Waxie Moon – the primary pioneer of boylesque – and Indigo Blue, one of Seattle’s most well-known burlesque performers.

“I am honored and proud to say I was a graduating member of the first ever Boylesque 101 class. It was a cathartic experience to develop Jean du Jour from a char-

acter in my mind I used to hang out with on mental vacations [to what Jean du Jour is today],” Jean told SGN. “What happened for me upon completing the course was that I could appreciate my whorish ideas with new purpose and encouragement. Indigo and Waxie are largely responsible for whores everywhere finally having a feel-good story.

“What’s most inspiring [about doing boylesque] is the freedom of expression it gives me. I can be as graceful, gender-bent, and Queer as I want to be, and it’s OK. Often when working with choreographers and directors in more traditional/mainstream forms of dance, the masculine/feminine dynamic of male/female relationships is most frequently presented, especially within the realm of classical ballet,” Paris told SGN. “Gender roles are always very clear, and often the same from one ballet to the next.

They don’t want me to be graceful; they want me to be strong. They don’t want gender-bent or Queer; they want a stereotypical representation of a heterosexual man.

Which is fine and has merit, but there’s so much more to explore that also has equal merit. Boylesque gives me the chance to do that in a way that’s satisfying and entertains people.”

“The thing that inspires me the most to do boylesque has to be the sense of pleasure I get every time I pull a piece of my costume off. I think, at my core, I love to dress! At the same time, I have always felt compelled to strip. If costumes are a vehicle which we use to communicate ideas impressed on us from our experiences, then to me, the art of striptease is the deliberate abandonment of surviving by means of blending in,” said Jean do Jour.

“The four of us all have different styles,” EmpeROAR Fabulous!!! told SGN. The show certainly proves it, and in some ways, it’s one of the things that makes the performance so impressive and uncommon.

“I’m happy we were able to convey that we enjoyed working together in our performance. This process, however, has been challenging for us. Not to say that we disliked working together, but … we all have very different styles,” said Paris Original.

“The further along we got with this project, the more apparent it became that our personalities and artistic styles and choices just weren’t matching up in a way that was conducive to a strong, collaborative group dynamic. This didn’t necessarily inhibit the show very much since so much of it was solo work. However, I do think there were a few aspects of the show that were affected by this.”

What GAZM has done is reinforce that these four artists are at the forefront of the Seattle boylesque scene, and that they are only becoming better and better performers with each show they appear in.

The four will likely work together again on future projects, but for now you can see Paris Original in the International Ballet Theater’s upcoming production of Dracula (October 22-24 and 29) at the Meydenbauer Theatre in Bellevue. Jean du Jour will be performing at Bump this year (October 29) and will be hosting Teatro Zinzombie on Halloween at Teatro Zinzanni.

Paris Original and the Luminous Pariah will be working together in their troupe Mod Carousel, which has already toured from Seattle to Juneau, Alaska.

“We’re both very excited to work together and see how Mod Carousel will develop,” said Paris Original.

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer The Cider House Rules, Part Two: In Other Parts of the World Book-It Repertory Theatre Through October 16 Book-It Repertory continues its tour-deforce production of The Cider House Rules this fall with Part Two: In Other Parts of the World. More accurately, you can see the entire work this fall, since Book-It is providing several opportunities to see the acclaimed Part One: Here In St. Cloud’s, as well. A unique full-day experience can be yours on several Saturdays if you attend Part One in the afternoon, have a dinner courtesy of St. Cloud’s Restaurant (they’re located in Madrona but will serve at the Center House), and then attend Part Two! What a day of culture!

Part Two is, in a way, more of an undertaking than Part One. Starting with Homer Wells leaving the orphanage to see the ocean, it encompasses his elongated stay at an apple orchard, where he learns to drive, swim, fix automobiles, pick apples, and make cider. On that estate, there is a cider house, where the cider is made, and a group of black workers who live there. Their “rules” are what the title refers to, and what lays the groundwork for the pivotal moment in the script.

Homer (the marvelously versatile Connor Toms) has been trained since he was a small boy to be a doctor, though he essentially re-

jects his unconventional training by the only man he could consider “father,” Dr. Larch (the commanding Peter Crook), partly because Larch has insisted that Homer not only deliver babies, but also perform abortions. Like many youth rebelling against the predestined paths of their parents, he wants to choose who and what he becomes.

The beauty of the story and the script is the way in which Dr. Larch develops the justification for his insistence that Homer take his place as a doctor and abortionist, who needs him (women with nowhere else to turn), and why (either taking in orphans after delivery or performing abortions can save desperate lives). In Part Two, Larch is getting older, and his addiction to ether is taking its toll. Larch develops an enormously risky and complex hoax to allow Homer to be accepted fully as a university-educated doctor by creating a fake life and fake set of accomplishments through fake correspondence with one of the other orphans, who actually died at age 8. Larch is determined to bring Homer back to St. Cloud’s orphanage and determined to fix it so that Homer’s credentials are not questioned.

The sprawling story involves Homer falling in love with his friend Candy (Emily Grogan) and hoping to marry her, after her lover and his friend Wally (Richard Nguyen Sloniker) is thought to have been killed during World War II. Candy becomes pregnant, but when Wally is found paralyzed but alive, she decides she must marry him, but asks Homer to live with her and pretend

The Lady With All The Answers Bullitt Theatre Through October 31 In a first for ACT, a mainstage show is being staged in the intimate Bullitt Cabaret space, now temporarily titled the Bullitt Theatre.

The former dining room of the much-remodeled and restored Eagles Auditorium building in downtown Seattle proves to be a perfect match for the one-woman The Lady With All The Answers, David Rambo’s charming tale of “the most important night” in the life of advice columnist Ann Landers. To accommodate ACT’s lengthy subscriber list, the show will have a nine-week run, continuing through October 31 (and overlapping with ACT’s upcoming The Lieutenant Of Inishmore, running October 15-November 14).

Seattle favorite Julie Briskman, fondly remembered for a host of terrific ACT performances, tackles the Ann L a n d e r s role – and it’s another perfect match in this delightful production. Briskman scored with the dual role of Mae West and Jo in Dirty Blonde, Lotty in Enchanted April, and Sylvia in The Women, plus numerous other ACT and Seattle productions. A veteran of major regional theaters around the country, Briskman can now add Ann Land-

She allowed no press coverage, argued with President Lyndon Johnson about the futility of the war, and made 2,500 personal phone calls to military families when she returned.

She noted that 55,000 of America’s finest died in the war. As in the episode about the suicidal Gay teenager, there was a hushed feeling in the captivated, capacity audience at that figure.

Landers spends lengthy moments praising her husband, Jules, the founder of Budget Rent A Car. When he gave her a lavish mink coat with her initials on the inside lining, she replaced the initials with a tag reading, “Jules’ Wife.” The “most difficult column” for her to write was to inform her readers that after a lengthy marriage, he now wanted a divorce to marry “a woman younger than our daughter.” American’s foremost advice columnist was taken short by his affair and the subsequent divorce and his remarriage.

She, understandably, worried that her readers might turn against her since her own marriage failed and she continued dispensing advice on marriage and relationships.

Needless to say, her readers rallied around her, and she continued to be Ann Landers in print until her death in 2002. (Her final columns were published posthumously.)

Throughout the play, Briskman makes Esther/Ann totally believable. Director Valerie Curtis-Newton, currently head of directing at the University of Washington School of Drama and an artistic associate at ACT, guides the production with a sure hand. The play skims by as a light entertainment with pools of emotional depth. It’s a joy from start to finish.

The Lady With All The Answers continues through October 31. (Season subscribers should be sure to check their personal tickets for exact dates, since the smaller seating capacity forces many subscribers to attend on a non-regular night.) Celebrating 37 Years!

Seattle Symphony with Yefim Bronfman September 25 Benaroya Hall The planned part of this concert began with a stunning work by Joseph Schwantner (b. 1943). His long title was The Poet’s Hour ... Soliloquy for violin and strings, “Reflections on Thoreau.” It was a world premiere, dedicated to Gerard Schwarz. Maria Larionoff, SSO concertmaster, displayed unerring technique and musicianship in a work that required double stops or soft harmonics more often than not. The reflective piece showed great skill both in structure and orchestration. Its attractive nature made me wish to hear it again.

Because of a dreadful Brahms Fourth Symphony under conductor Gerard Schwarz a couple years ago, I almost dreaded this concert. But I couldn’t miss pianist Yefim Bronfman playing the Prokofiev “Piano Concerto No. 2,” and so there we were, with Schwarz and the SSO launching into the Brahms Third. Imagine my surprise when an absolutely lovely performance washed over us.

I have long maintained that Schwarz can do anything well if he’s really interested in doing so. Witness the superb Beethoven “Eroica” he gave us before taking the players to Carnegie Hall. Usually I hate his Beethoven (having learned to avoid the perennial Beethoven Ninth on New Year’s Eve), but he wasn’t about to present a subpar “Eroica” to the critics in his old home town.

What I forgot this time was that he and the SSO had just recorded all four Brahms symphonies. Obviously Schwarz had given these some extra TLC, for every phrase was molded and caressed. Balances were mostly fine, and everything was made expressive by

The second work was the premiere of another work by the same choreographer. Six Dances (officially Sechs Tanze) is, amazingly, an earlier work for Kylian’s Nederlands Dans Theater. This 1986 piece, staged here to follow Petite Mort, seemed to be a sequel until close reading of the program revealed it to be the first creation. The standalone black dresses, the fencing foils, the powered wigs, the Mozart selections seem to unite the two works. It will be interesting to see if PNB stages a revival of both works in a coming season, but programs them in chronological sequence. Most of the audience reacted to Six Dances as a sequel – it will be great fun to see it as the first of the two works.

Jardi Tancat was work number three. A 1983 creation, also from Nederlands Dans Theater, the work has been a Seattle favorite since it was introduced here in 1996. Choreographed by Nacho Duato, Jardi Tancat (which translates as “closed garden”) is a planting celebration, an extended plea for rain for the harvest. Danced to songs based on Catalonian folktales, composed and sung (on recording) by Maria del Mar Bonet, the work is a cry for help from a desperate people.

Glass Pieces, the second new-to-PNB work on the current bill, features choreography by Jerome Robbins. It was created for the New York City Ballet in 1983, and Peter Boal, PNB’s current artistic director, was in the original work as a young dancer. A fullcompany work, the work is hard to evaluate

judicious dynamics and appropriate pacing.

Each movement had character and an attractive Brahmsian warmth. (I have never heard Schwarz allow the double basses to sing out so impressively as here.)

Something that usually interests Schwarz – and for which he is even famous – is neglected American music. Thus, we heard a compelling case made for Arthur Foote’s “Francesca da Rimini,” composed in 18823. The piece started out sounding classically structured, but soon loosened up into a more romantic journey through tonalities and orchestral colors not unlike Brahms. It was not, I think, particularly memorable but certainly worthy of being heard.

The Foote was originally planned for the second item on the menu, but Principal clarinetist Christopher Sereque had taken the music home to practice and had forgotten to bring it back! Schwarz applauded his industry, explained that Sereque’s home was not far from Benaroya Hall, and declared that we would hear the Foote after intermission, just before the Prokofiev.

The effect of this little change could not have been more dramatic. A program is like a meal, with one’s palette being led with some care from one flavor to another. In this unplanned case, we jumped from the supertonal, lush harmonies of Arthur Foote into a totally different world: the wild atonality and rhythms of Prokofiev’s “Piano Concerto No. 2.” Even someone familiar and comfortable with Prokofiev’s musical language could not be but jolted by the sudden shift.

I found the shock exciting and fun ... much more so than if we had confronted the concerto after an intermission (as originally programmed).

In a work requiring this level of energy, power, and extreme technical facility, one could not do better than Yefim Bronfman.

He doesn’t look the part. A big blob of a man in his 50s with a huge, fleshy face, he on a single, first viewing, but it was clearly a success with the opening-night audience.

The repetitive nature of Glass’ trademarked compositions finds the corps de ballet rushing across the stage or in a single line at the back of the stage with the women repeating a stylized movement as the three major couples take center-stage focus. The white grid of the set design seemed a perfect visualization of the Glass selections.

seemed at first sight like the antithesis of an athlete. Yet only a highly conditioned athlete could possess the stamina and power of this musician. We all knew at the close that we had shared a phenomenal experience.

One reviewer appropriately remarked that it was amazing that he didn’t have a finger fall off!

To thus remark on this performance should not be taken to mean it was in any way less than musical. Within the barrage

of notes in even the most virtuosic passages, the important notes stood out as perfectly articulated and expressive. The quieter passages were full of repose and relief. I cannot imagine a more effective performance.

The players of the SSO were right up there with the soloist, and Schwarz was the perfect partner.

Laughter. As a stand-up comedian, she is comfortable and confident – and most importantly, funny.

Aside from starring on LOGO cable TV, Julie says she is passionate about movie production. “I’m currently working on getting two feature films funded,” she said. “If anyone want to produce a movie, they should check out my movie website, www.nicestthingthemovie.com. I’m currently building the website for a second feature, which is a Gay zombie movie called Gay Baby Army.”

Christian got his start on the Mexican TV show Rebelde, which led to the formation of the popular band Latin boy band RBD. Since his solo career began this year, he’s embarked on the Liberated World Tour to

promote his first solo studio album Almas Transparentes and the hit single “En Donde Estas?”

Currently, Christian says that he’s been working with Club Papi – America’s leading Gay Latin dance party circuit – for a national Gay club tour in the U.S. The tour has taken Christian and the Club Papi go-go boys to Sacramento, San Diego, and West Hollywood, California, as well as Chicago, Illinois and Houston, Texas, with the final tour date ending in Seattle on Sunday.

“Most of my fans are women,” Christian told SGN. “Right now I want to get in touch with the Gay community. I’m a Gay guy and I want to perform for my community. That is why I’m doing this tour.”

Christian says that he’s had an amazing time performing in Gay clubs in the U.S. so far. “The Gay audiences are great!” he said. “It’s been so wonderful. I love my Gay fans.”

Christian is outspoken in supporting Gay rights and opposing homophobia. “I work with a campaign for the Mexican government about Gay equality, and I also work with an HIV/AIDS healthcare foundation where we encourage people to get tested so they know their status,” he said. “Currently, I’m working on setting up a foundation for kids that are HIV-positive.”

Christian says there’s no denying his music is “totally pop.” He told SGN that he loves pop music because it is “the only kind of music where dance, hip-hop, blues and all types of music are fused together.”

“Seattle can expect to see a show with a lot of energy, music, dancing, and maybe even a surprise,” he said. “I hope everyone enjoys my music.”

The Club Papi Seattle and Christian Chavez party begins at 10 p.m. and runs until 2 a.m. Tickets are $20 at the door. Christian will be available for a meet-and-greet with fans.
