Three Tall Women Seattle Repertory Theatre Through November 28 The Seattle Repertory Theatre continues its 2010-’11 season with its second family drama, Edward Albee’s 1991 Pulitzer Prize-winning Three Tall Women. The season-opening work, the Tony Award winning God of Carnage, set the tone for the fall

season with its comedy/drama of two families who meet to discuss a recent altercation between their two young sons. Three Tall Women scans the lifetime of “A,” openly based on Albee’s hostile memories of his adopted mother. It’s clearly the stronger play and makes a welcome return to the Emerald City’s theater scene. A strong production at Intiman in the early 1990s is fondly remembered by longtime local theater fans. see seattle rep page 32

Intriguing Monsters a journey to nowhere

kudos and all finger-pointing should be sent in his direction – and there are plenty of both to go around.

I loved the simplicity of his story, the directness of the narrative. Right from the start I knew what kind of film this was going to be and where it was more than likely going to go. Sure, there were surprises as to how it would get there and what wonders would be showcased, but in the end this was nothing more than an eerie, mostly jungleset road trip where the main characters would learn just as much about themselves as they do the gigantic creatures they’re hoping to avoid.

And I was perfectly fine with that. Both Sam and Andrew are interesting people

too clever for their own good. Worse, they make Sam and Andrew’s journey relatively pointless, as viewers who have been paying attention are sure to realize the circular, nonlinear nature of what they just sat through.

I’m good with a film like this being a tragedy if I feel like it’s earned the distinction, but the reality here is altogether different.

Edwards plays with the audience in a way that’s almost indefensible, making people care about what is going on and root for their heroes, but keeping them unaware that what they’re watching is actually a flashback. I didn’t appreciate this at all, and as laudable as the majority of the film is, I felt cheated by the time it was over.

Not to say I do not respect the filmmaker’s vision or his uncanny ability to create a visually intriguing world on a miniscule budget. His use of sound is downright extraordinary, and I love it when a movie realizes that the scariest and most thrilling sequences are those that happen just outside of what a person can see. Additionally, he really has written a pair of flawed, threedimensional characters a person almost can’t help but root for, and a lot of times I found that the sense of amazement, or of wonder, or of sadness, or of outright terror they were feeling were passed directly onto me.

Monsters Opening November 5 In a discovery straight out of 2010: The Year We Make Contact, NASA learns that there is extraterrestrial life within the solar system, dispatching a probe to Europa to collect samples and bring them back to Earth. But complications ensue, and the vessel crash-lands in the wilds of Central America. Suddenly over half of Mexico is an “Infected Zone,” crawling with octopus-like creatures which cause mass devastation and havoc.

Andrew Kaulder (Scoot McNairy) is a photojournalist who has been working on the outskirts of the Infected Zone for three years. Sam Wynden (Whitney Able) is a tourist who has suffered a recent loss and just so happens to be the daughter of the owner of Andrew’s publication. Andrew agrees to transport Sam through the Infected Zone and back to the United States. The two are forced to travel through the heart of the most dangerous areas after the military cuts off all the normal routes due to increased creature activity.

Epstein, whose first film with Friedman was 1989’s Oscar-winning documentary Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt, is a Queer hero. He directed the seminal and groundbreaking documentary Word Is Out: Stories of Some of Our Lives in 1978, a time when Queer film meant grainy un-looped Super 8 shorts starring hirsute muscle men in leather kit that arrived wrapped in plain brown paper. Epstein’s filmography reads like a Queer culture primer and includes The Times of Harvey Milk (another Oscarwinner), The AIDS Show, The Celluloid Closet, and Paragraph 175 – all required viewing for every member of the LGBT community.

James Franco is a god.

The above paragraph is not hyperbole.

Franco has played James Dean and Harvey Milk’s lover Scott Smith, he is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Yale, and he got his first small break playing Daniel Desario on the ill-fated but surprisingly good television series Freaks and Geeks. It doesn’t matter whether he’s slumming in Nicholas Sparks schlock, taking on General Hospital with a wink and nudge, starring in Hollywood blockbusters, or making small films that matter – Franco makes it all work, and he looks mighty fine doing it.

Franco’s take on the young version of Ginsberg is nothing short of brilliant. The awkward gestures, the black glasses. The impossible sexiness of the nerdish Jewish kid who dropped out of Columbia and dropped into Bellevue. Franco gets it all, even the voice with its odd cadence and tinny nasal quality.

Mary-Louise Parker is a goddess.

I know, I know, Parker has only a small role in Howl – a small but pivotal role as Gail Potter, the embodiment of the collectively shocked voice of middle America. Potter is American post war denial personified and Howl is the poem that rattled that cage.

Parker – all sexy and quirky just as we love her – is perfect as the sexually repressed literary critic who believes real literature must reflect prevailing moral values.

The filmmakers, somehow intersecting with Franco’s recent sweet fascination with soap operas, mine the world of soaps for hot guys to play Ginsberg’s three great loves: Aaron Tveit of Gossip Girl plays Peter Orlovsky, Todd Rotondi of As the World Turns plays Jack Kerouac, and Jon Prescott also of As the World Turns plays Neal Cassidy.

They are, as mentioned above, hot and they all do solid work.

Howl, the film, is part narrative biopic, part experimental film trying to capture the elusive magic that is good poetry, and part

courtroom drama. While the film works on every level, the real reason to see Howl is because the poem is so good, and because the poem – and the obscenity trial it triggered – changed our world. Howl, the poem, is the jazz riffed song of a disillusioned generation of drug-addled angels who looked around at the excesses and incongruity of the ‘50s era cultural landscape that seemed to exclude everyone other than WASPy heterosexuals with two kids and a penchant for missionary style sex and called bullshit.

Todd Verow’s delightful Deleted Scenes

Sean in which a character’s HIV status is disclosed. Verow shrewdly leaves the answer unclear, expecting the viewer to decide what the truth could be.

Verow’s also uses the film to explore the morality of another recurring feature in his work, that of a hustler. The filmmaker pauses, before responding thoughtfully to why he favors sex-for-money scenarios, “I think in films, traditionally, [prostitution] is treated as punishable and also in society – it’s a victimless crime, but it gets a bad rap.

It’s demonized and criminalized and at the same time, glamorized. The truth is right down the middle. It is just a job, but it’s a job where you are constantly bombarded by the criminalization and the glamorization. So, if you are in that profession, you are sort of caught in the middle.”

Verow speaks from experience, having worked in the trade in the past. Ironically, where he once played the hustler in his film, he now plays the john.

“I’m too old,” he deadpans when asked about this role reversal. “I am sort of the john – the one who hires these people, and to a certain extent exploits them by filming them. For this movie, I did have an actor to play the [role I took], and he did not show up, so I was forced into it. Which was a happy accident, because it tied the two stories together. My character’s scene with [Fast Eddy] was not originally the same person, but when the actor didn’t show up, I had to rethink that, and it actually made it better.”

It’s amusing to think that Verow may have been deleted from his own film. But this is what Deleted Scenes is all about; it allows viewers to imagine their own versions of what happens with the characters. It is also what makes this film so engaging.

For this, I wanted to just keep them long, so your mind sort of wanders. Gorillaz irradiate Key Arena with visually stunning show Did it take George Harrison

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Gorillaz November 2 Key Arena The world’s biggest virtual band made a real-life appearance this week at Key Arena, unveiling themselves in a performance that was cool, artistic, spunky, and big, of course.

Gorillaz, the musical-visual project hatched by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and comic book virtuoso Jamie Hewlett, has managed to hide behind a foursome of cartoon characters named Murdoc, Noodle, Russell, and 2D for nine years, three albums, and several international hit singles – even when they joined Madonna on stage for the 2006 Grammy Awards, the British act still took the form of a virtual ensemble.

But after a slick introduction, featuring Snoop Dogg and the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble on “Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach,” a set of large, bold letters were lit one by one to spell out “GORILLAZ” and there was no more hiding from then on.

Dressed in semi-baggy Levi’s, white sneakers, and matching belt with a striped redblue shirt, Albarn emerged and opened the concert with “Last Living Souls,” a track from the group’s Demon Days recording.

“19/2000,” from the band’s self-titled debut, was packed with all sorts of fun and roused main floor concertgoers to wave their hands in the air frantically. R&B legend Bobby Womack wrapped his deep, soulful pipes around “Stylo,” but missing in action was the other song’s collaborator, rap maverick Mos Def. Sub-ins replaced hip-hop stars De La Soul on “Superstar Jellyfish,” however, the actual Little Dragon came out to sing lead vocals on “Empire Ants,” a definite highlight of the show. Wearing a royal blue knee-length skirt that looked like a tea cup when she twirled, and backed by heavy disco beats with dizzying keyboards, Little Dragon was irresistibly adorable.

Comparing Seattle to his London hometown, Albarn said, “When the clouds are down, it’s like England.” He later stated of Gorillaz’s initial U.S. embarkment that “It’s been incredible, really incredible.” Albarn is a big kid in reality, a playful, hyper, and enthusiastic child who seems to be having as good a time as we imagine it would be on a large, colorful stage with everyone from The Clash’s Mick Jones and Paul Simonon – in slouchy vintage gear, including retro Captain hats – to veteran singer Womack to an eight-piece brass section that incorporated trumpets, trombones, and a tuba.

Little Dragon peeked out again for a duet with Albarn on “To Binge,” set against scrolling Asian characters and a bubbly, pastel-washed, karaoke-type screen. The two held hands like a pair of inseparable elementary students at recess. “Dare” was remarkably active, with Albarn moving from side to side on stage and the GORILLAZ lettering now illuminated in Lifesavers-like colors. Gorillaz closed the main set with “Plastic Beach,” the title number of their newest full-length effort.

For an encore, Womack returned for a stirring take on “Cloud of Unknowing,” followed by a peppy run-through of “Feel Good Inc.” Unfortunately, both of these were reduced to two- to three-minute versions, so we barely had enough time to enjoy them. Blowing into a recorder, Albarn intro’d the final song of the night, a very lively rendition of “Clint Eastwood” that got almost everybody on their feet and joining in on the chorus.

Throughout the concert, a stage-length screen flashed images of the animated punkish figures, the band as we knew them until now, mouthing the words along with Albarn and his guest vocalists amidst a variety of scenery – from urban streets in the wee, dark hours to mystical, exotic landscapes in broad daylight.

to bring us Ravi Shankar?

riods. Much of the film is narrated by Shankar in his beautifully accented English.

He describes his journey from a spoiled childhood in Paris, dressing like a dandy and always chasing after girls, to his eventual commitment to a guru, spending more than seven years of utter surrender to a tyrannical teacher, to whom he feels he owes everything. He says that sometimes the guru is even above God; he is the source of all knowledge. We see Shankar revisit that guru, who is by this time about 100 years old.

Included, of course, is a questioning coverage of the famous lessons with George Harrison and what the bridging of East and West means, if anything. Joyous sessions between Shankar and violinist Yehudi Menuhin shed further light on this intriguing subject. We see Indian audiences as well as American crowds receiving his performances with wild enthusiasm. I felt both embarrassed and charmed by the excesses in manner and dress of the California hippies listening to his playing.

The final 15 minutes are appropriately a complete performance of a raga.

To anyone uninterested in Indian music, watching this DVD would be akin to forcing someone unmusical to sit through Wagner’s Parsifal. But for any of us with even a superficial interest, this careful documentary will reward repeated viewings.

The first words, appropriately enough, on Raga: A Film Journey into the Soul of India are of Ravi Shankar counting out the unwestern meter of a raga. His point throughout the 97-minute program is to educate. He attempts to convey some of the complexity of the Indian culture and its music. The result is a fascinating, episodic series of snapshots of periods of his life. They are generally well-filmed, sometimes very artfully and sometimes like a simple documentary.

Baltic States of ecstasy

fresher, Kremer and the orchestra played Schubert’s “Minuet in D minor” from Five Minuets and Six Trios. From the searing intensity of the “De Profundis” to grace and loveliness! And then we traveled north to the great Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, with his “Passacaglia for Violin Solo and String Orchestra,” which was dedicated to Kremerata Baltica. In this, the group was joined

by Adrei Pushkarev on the vibraphone. After an initial adjustment to its super-soft, ethereal sounds, I found it added a special patina to the orchestra: a kind of quiet glow that was quite attractive.

I throw up my hands at the task of trying to describe Pärt’s music: modern, yet harkening back to the Renaissance; minimal and spare, yet rich and emotional. I can’t imagine a better performance than this one.

That Andrei Pushkarev was a master could not be doubted. Poetry infused every stroke. In fact, his manner of hitting the keys reminded me of how Michael Crusoe, surely one of the greats, plays the tympani in our own Seattle Symphony.

Next came a program change: a single piece by Stevan Kovacs Tickmayer was replaced by a different work by Tickmayer, a fragment of his transcription from Bach’s “St. John’s Passion,” and by Georgs Pelécis’ “Flowering Jasmine,” played in a duet between Kremer and Pushkarev.

These were lovely, song-like pieces … sweet almost to the point of being saccharine.

Kremerata Baltica October 30th Benaroya Hall The “Visiting Orchestra Series” presented by Seattle Symphony is almost always a good bet, and never more so than with this appearance by Kremerata Baltica.

Founded by the Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer, these 27 young musicians from the Baltic States embodied such intensity and unanimity that they seemed like one extremely focused artist. It was a pleasure to see such involvement by each player. The fact that they were without a conductor never crossed one’s mind!

The program began with one of my favorite 20th-century compositions, Bartók’s “Divertimento for String Orchestra” (1939). Entirely tonal, it nonetheless sounded utterly fresh and modern. The Kremerata Baltica made the most of its wildly varied moods and dynamics. Again, each player told the same story with devotion and energy. The spooky, ascending trills of the second movement seemed especially appropriate to the season, at the same time resonating with far broader emotional content than a silly holiday like Halloween. In fact, everything they played this evening communicated very clear emotional content, all the way from horror to lovely repose, from ecstasy to anguish. There was not a dull moment.

This evening’s program alternated pieces of dramatic emotional intensity with those of less stressful, happier feelings. And this took the form of inserting lovely Viennese

works by Schumann and Schubert between the more eastern European and Baltic works. Thus, after the Bartók came Robert Schumann’s “Concerto for Violin and Or-

Haydn’s “Symphony No. 45, ‘Farewell,’” echoed the gimmick of the Schnittke peace, with the musicians leaving their seats on cue in a series of exits (including our conductor!), leaving at last only two violists to play the last notes. In Haydn’s day, each musician would snuff out his candle as he departed. We saw the lights go down until only a couple of music stand lights (remember those from Act One?) remained on.

Needless to say, Haydn’s wit worked better than Schnittke’s.

Like most Mozart, Haydn’s symphonies leave the musician no place to hide; his or her musicianship is out there, naked. Thus, this “Farewell” symphony gave an excellent avenue into Michael Francis’ musical soul. And a beautiful soul it was! While the formal shape of Haydn’s proportions was perfectly maintained, each phrase seemed molded to maximum musical effect. The sound of the Seattle Symphony also, as in the Mozart, seemed wholly changed by the use of mostly straight-toned strings (no vibrato), giving the Haydn special clarity and brilliance.

The well-justified excitement about Ludovic Morlot’s appointment as the next music director of Seattle Symphony would, I think, be equally justified had the choice gone to Michael Francis. The players responded supremely well to his every wish, no matter how subtle. The half-empty house will, I think, fill up much faster with such communicative and charismatic musicians at the helm.

Seattle Symphony October 30 Benaroya Hall This must be an age of potentially great young conductors. Take Gustavo Dudamel, now head of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, for example.

Add our guest conductor, Michael Francis; he demonstrated all the talents and none of the faults I would look for in an orchestral leader. Only 10 years out of the Royal Academy of Music, he looks like an English choirboy, with tight blonde curly hair, slim body, and a boundless energy that seems to be all musical.

As the players began Mozart’s “Symphony No. 33,” one was immediately struck by Francis’ elegant, broad gestures, conducting with his whole body but without excess. The Seattle Symphony, with most of its players busy at Seattle Opera’s Lucia performances, was reduced to about the same size as the 27-member Karmerata Baltica, which had performed on the same stage the previous evening. (Another similarity to the previous concert was the halfempty hall!) The Mozart was lean (with minimal vibrato) but warm, energetic yet graceful, with tempi brisk but never too fast.

In short, it pleased these ears in every way.

Next came a curiosity, Alfred Schnittke’s “Moz-Art á la Haydn,” composed in 1977.

The composer described his technique as “the interaction between various stylistic

fields, between different quotations from totally different types of music.” In other words (or so it sounded), you put quotes from different composers into a blender and mix them all up and end up with … chaos? Supposedly there were quotes from Mozart’s “Haffner” Symphony as well as the 40th Symphony.

But they were so brief and so disguised that I caught only one. The work required a very long setup, with stagehands running electrical strips so that every music stand could have a light, and there was a large micro-

a mess, which was not the fault of the musicians.

But after intermission, it was all gold! The meltingly beautiful “Clarinet Concerto” of Aaron Copland (1947) could not have been presented with more charm, wit, and musicality than that of soloist Jon Manasse.

Commissioned by Benny Goodman, this masterpiece of modern lyricism was an utter delight from start to finish. Manasse caressed the opening movement with a love that matched Copland’s brilliance and Reviewer Rod Parke can be reached at made me want to moan with appreciation. rmp62@columbia.edu.

Hearts Are Monsters a strange premiere Snell, who has been in love with Mother for many years.

Each actor dives headfirst into the role, over the top and down the rabbit hole of strangeness. While they are all fun to laugh at, the heart of the piece is that each of them is emotionally accessible and appealing, no matter how hard they try to be portrayed as unappealing.

Erin Stewart plays a great blend of clueless and innocent, all while being smarter than everyone around her. She is so desperate for love that you just want to snatch her away from her awful family and tell her, “It gets better.” But it turns out she’s in no danger of feeling suicidal by the end. Why? Who knows.

An ingeniously compact and workable set

by David Gignac includes a mole rat cage hidden inside the television and set changes that take mere moments with painted flats.

Outrageous costumes by Jennifer Hurlbert complete Blanchard’s vision. Original songs

by Rick Miller give Jack credibly awful but musically totally appropriate heartfelt homages to sing to Wendy and Marcy.

One can guess that the title refers to the fact that you can’t really control who the heart loves, and therefore your heart could be a monster, making you do and feel things you would far much rather not feel or do.

Hearts Are Monsters The Jewelbox Through November 20 Macha Monkey’s newest production is a world premiere by local playwright Kelleen Conway Blanchard. Blanchard’s previous plays include Edith’s Head and Small Town.

She loves the offbeat. Hearts Are Monsters is about two jealous sisters, one of whom is a genius with an oddly huge head, and one of whom had some fame as a child star and now, at the ripe age of 16, is sexually ravenous.

Their mother is a drunkard who loves – like the mother in Glass Menagerie – to reminisce about her previous life and loves, all while staring at the television in a stupor.

Also like Glass Menagerie, she holds on to the memory of her husband, with his portrait hanging on the wall. However, unlike the Glass Menagerie, it’s quite likely that she was the one who killed him. At least, that’s what Marcy, the smart daughter who loves mole rats, has to consider when her father appears as a ghost demanding vengeance, and the body turns up buried and decayed below the floor in the kitchen.

Bret Fetzer directs this crazy mashup of classic snatches from famous plays (recognize Hamlet?) and weird characters trying to find love. from The Cheetah to Broadway’s Biltmore Theater. Tom O’Horgan, who had the reputation of directing experimental theater, said, “I see [Hair] as a singspiel, a popular opera,” and was hired as director.

“The kids are talking their own language,” O’Horgan said. “They’re expressing their real sex attitudes and they’re laying it on the line about race and misce-

genation. The kids on stage are authentic, and people sense this.”

It was Butler and O’Horgan who put the nude scene into the Broadway show – not to shock audiences, but to make a point. The scene caused violent reactions in several cities, and invoked threats of censorship. In response, James Rado said, “Being naked in front of an audience, you’re baring your soul – not only the soul, but the whole body was being exposed. It was very apt, very honest, and almost necessary.” Although only 20 seconds, the scene would be enough to delay the London opening until the abolishment of the Theatres Act of 1968, which until then

controlled theater censorship.

Hair opened on Broadway on April 29, 1968, and ran for over 1,750 performances.

The opening cast included Gerome Ragni as Berger, James Rado as Claude, Shelley Plimpton as Crissy, and Melba Moore as Dionne. Included in the Tribe were future celebrities Paul Jabara and Diane Keaton.

During the original run on Broadway, the Tribe would include such notable names as Ben Vereen, Keith Carradine, Meat Loaf, and Vickie Sue Robinson, to name a few.

The original reviews were mixed.

Clive Barnes (The New York Times) called it “So new, so fresh, and so unassuming, even in its pretensions,” and Len Harris (CBS television) said, “I’ve finally found the best musical of the Broadway season … is that sloppy, vulgar, terrific tribal love rock musical Hair.” Traditional composers would pan the show. Leonard Bernstein walked out of the Broadway production, comparing the music to a “laundry list.” Richard Rodgers said it was only “one-third music,” while John Lennon supposedly said, “I do not know any musician who thinks it’s good.”

Despite being nominated for two Tony Awards in 1968 (Best Musical and Best Direction), the show won neither. The Original Cast Album would go on to win the 1968 Grammy Award and sell almost 3 million copies. In later years, The New York Times reported, “The cast album of Hair was … a musthave for the middle classes. … [It] became a pop-rock classic.” Shirley Bassey, Barbra Streisand, and Diana Ross among many others have recorded songs from Hair. In 1969, The 5th Dimension recorded “Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In,” winning Record of the Year and topping the charts. Three other songs (“Hair,” “Good Morning Starshine,” and “Easy to Be Hard”) would reach second, third, and fourth positions, respectively on the Billboard chart. Hair would see a 2009 Broadway Revival (still running) that would redeem its place on the stage. It would be nominated for eight Tony Awards, including a win for Best Revival of a Musical.

The story follows a group of friends, a “tribal family” of flower children, hippies, dropouts, and draft dodgers, people united in protest against the war in Vietnam. The plot is loosely fit around best friends Claude and Berger (said to be autobiographical characters of authors Ragni and Rado), Sheila, and their group of friends that make up “The Tribe.”

Claude has been drafted and he debates whether it’s better to fight in the Vietnam War, or to fight for the sexual revolution and the emergence of a new generation.

Hair is the brainchild of two hippie children named Gerome Ragni and James Rado. Both men met in 1964, while performing in an OffBroadway show and began writing Hair later that year. Their goal was to write a staged musical anti-war protest. Many of the characters, plotlines, and even some songs were taken from events witnessed on a daily basis. The song “Frank Mills” – which tells of a flower girl’s meeting and loss of the man she loves – was an actual personal’s ad placed in the Village Voice.

The song “Donna” – a search by a confused man looking for his Madonna – was inspired while the authors sat at a coffee house in New York’s Greenwich Village. According to Rado, “A guy dressed like a wizard walked in and asked people, ‘Have you seen my Donna? She’s a 16-year-old virgin.’ Ragni and I looked at each other and said, ‘That has to go in!’”

Even the now-infamous group nude scene was added into the Broadway production because the authors watched two anti-war demonstrators in Central Park strip in protest. But it wasn’t until a good friend introduced the two to a Canadian composer named Galt MacDermot (winner of the 1961 Grammy Award) that the musical would begin to take shape. MacDermot would write

the first score draft (including the hits “I Got Life,” “Where Do I Go,” and “Hair”) in less than three weeks.

After many rejections by more conservative theater producers, Joe Papp (of the New York Shakespeare Festival) took a chance on the musical. The lack of a plotline was the least of the problems when the show first took to the stage in 1967. The musical’s script would be under

Opening night of the Rep’s production was seriously marred by memory lapses from Megan Cole, the main character in Albee’s family saga. Cole, once popularly known as “The Queen of Intiman” from her early work there – especially her mesmerizing performances in Electra and Medea – returned to centerstage at the Rep in a somewhat diminished capacity. Playing a 92-year-old woman with approaching senility, Cole went up in her lines about 20 minutes into the demanding work. After a long series of repeating prompting, she sailed through several scenes, but then the memory lapses returned. After that, it was clear sailing through the end of Act One. Alas, the damage to the overall production was already done. To her credit, a near flawless Act Two – the play’s most interesting half – carried the evening and erased most of the awkwardness of the stumbles in Act One. To her credit, Cole accepted full responsibility for the problems in a candid discussion at the opening night party.

“I just couldn’t get the lines out,” she smiled. “The words were just not there.

That’s my project for the next few days.”

Even with the faltering memorization, Cole was stunning in her strong characterization.

(Full disclosure time: Cole is a great theatrical friend of this reviewer and, to this mind, can clearly do no wrong.) An educated guess would be that the show is letter-perfect by now, but early audiences – previews and opening shows – clearly missed out on some of the play’s power.

Act One finds A in her stylish bedroom with two other “tall women” present. B is a live-in caretaker/companion. C is a very young “tall woman,” a young associate of A’s lifelong lawyer. B, the resourceful Suzanne Bouchard, a local favorite, is the wisecracking observer. A is 92 years old and failing. And demanding – she admits to being 91 but is certain that she is not 92.

C is bothered by the unnecessary vanity of taking one year off A’s actual age. A rages, accuses the young attorney of stealing her money, obviously trusts no one, and has nothing good to say about her adult son who left home right after high school and returned to her life only recently. (The son appears mid-way through Act Two and has no lines to speak – he simply sits by his infirm mother. Nick Garrison plays the silent son.)

The family rift, it turns out, centered on the son and his boys. She was personally offended decades ago when her Gay son came out to her and her husband. (All of this parallels Albee’s own experience with his adopted parents – the play omits the adopted status but the lines resonate with such pain that his homosexuality adds an extra dimension for GLBT theater fans.) Her Gay son did not return home when his father died (as Albee did not) but he has recently started making short monthly trips to his aging mother. A is suspicious. They never have talked again about his lifestyle, she tells the companion and legal rep.

Act One ends with a medical crisis. At the start of Act Two, Albee ups the theatricality of the play. A is in her bed center stage, obviously near death. C is, strangely at first, in a 1920s flapper outfit. B is in a mid-century stylish cocktail dress. It quickly becomes apparent that these two are now vestiges of A at earlier time of her life – C and B are the 26-year-old and 52-year-old versions, respectively. The two banter about their life at each point. B has knowledge of what happens to C, but C has no knowledge of her life after 26. Bouchard, as B, has the best lines – “It’s all downhill after 16,” and turning 50 “Opens up new vistas of decline.” Alexandra Tavares, in her Rep debut as C, more than holds her own in these brittle exchanges.

Well into Act Two, Albee pulls one of the most memorable theatrical coups in recent drama. A bounds on stage – Cole, a vibrant older woman, well-dressed and beautifully coifed (a remarkable Barbara Bush-look alike, only thinner) now represents the woman late in life. It turns out that the very realistic bedridden A is the work of the talented prop department. The three ages of the same woman are cleverly linked by costume designer Melanie Taylor Burgess who unites the three by their pearl jewelry. In Act One, A has revealed her love of “pearls and diamonds.”

The three discuss their shared life. One thing that all three women agree on is the impossibility of oral sex. In Act One, A has a breathtaking monologue about her husband entering her dressing room as she sat nude in front of her makeup mirror. He, too, is nude (A’s offhanded “We were nude a lot then.” is one of the show’s biggest laugh lines).

He has wrapped a stylish art deco diamond bracelet around his erection (his “peepee,” as she very properly calls it) and hovers over her shoulder as she sits. “Take it, I thought you might like it,” he suggested. Knowing “what he wanted,” she “just couldn’t,” and the scene ends in a marital disaster. In Act Two, all three agree that “that” is one thing they could never do.

The son enters to sit next to the bed. He never speaks, but the women continue their discussion of him and of his life, of her lengthy marriage, of his recent return to his mother’s life. Allison Narver, the sensitive director, led the cast in a visualization of Act Two during rehearsals, Cole said at the opening night party. “We decided that each of the women is like a Plexiglass box stacked on top of each other, able to see and acknowledge each other.” It was a striking metaphor for Act Two, and it certainly makes this production sizzle.

The play ends, as it must. A life has been celebrated, a life has been examined. The show is theatrically stunning and the message – uncomfortable for some in the opening night audience – is well-made.

Three Tall Women continues at the Seattle Rep through November 28. Since the Rep is staging the high-profile work in the intimate Leo K. Eric Andrews-Katz: What or who influenced you to become a Broadway performer?

Kelli O’Hara: It was probably my vocal coach, Florence Birdwell, in Oklahoma City. She influenced me to be a professional signer. Broadway just came along.

Andrews-Katz: What was your first show in New York?

O’Hara: My first show on Broadway was Jekyll & Hyde, but the first show was in Sugarloaf, NY, just north of the city. It was Something’s Afoot and the Butler Didn’t Do It, a kind of musical version of Clue. I played the character Hope, and it was really fun.

I was grateful to have it and made friends, many of whom I am still good friends with.

Andrews-Katz: What important lessons did you learn from your first Broadway experience?

Celebrating 37 Years!

O’Hara: I went from the touring company [of the musical] to the Broadway company just as it was getting ready to close. That always affects everyone. I learned the difference working as a professional on Broadway and what the ideal dream really is; that every day is a new audience and it’s important to always have a positive attitude.

Andrews-Katz: John Lithgow is not known for his singing. How did it go costarring in your first leading role, Sweet Smell of Success?

O’Hara: It comes down to something more than just singing. When you are a great actor, it’s more about putting across a sound. Rex Harrison didn’t sing, and yet he was in one of the greatest musicals [My Fair Lady]. You can lose the thought in song, so it’s more important that you can get your thought across. Performing opposite John was a major master class and wonderful learning experience. I think he sings very well.

Andrews-Katz: Why do you think Dracula, the musical [157 performances], didn’t have a longer run?

O’Hara: I think it had a lot of good intent. The technical aspects of it might have worked on stage, but the material might have been lacking. At first the audiences loved it, in almost a cult way. When the reviews came out, the audiences were told not to like us, so they didn’t. When you do a show, you have to believe in it.

Andrews-Katz: The Light in the Piazza premiered in Seattle. Originally, you played the role of Franca. How did you move from that role into the lead Clara for the Broadway production?

O’Hara: I was with the reading/workshop from the beginning in Sundance. Adam Guettel [composer] originally had a different idea for a vocal range for the character Clara. Vicky Clarke [playing Clara’s mother] was such an operatic singer, and they wanted the same for Clara. They wanted Clara to look like a woman while still having the mind of a child. By the time we hit Chicago [pre-Broadway], they wanted to go in a different direction. I sang for them and the change was made.

Andrews-Katz: The Light in the Piazza was your first (of two) roles opposite Matthew Morrison. What was your first impression of this Glee-ful man?

O’Hara: The show was cast except for Fabrizio. I’ll never forget the day he came in, with such an air of confidence – so handsome and charming – that immediately they changed the role to suit him. It was written vocally higher, so they brought it down. He won everybody’s heart. We went on to become such good friends.

Andrews-Katz: In The Pajama Game you starred opposite Harry Connick, Jr. What was the biggest on-stage flub that happened during the show?

O’Hara: I have to say we had a pretty smooth run. Not a lot of flubs. We had a 16-second costume change right before the song “There Once Was a Man,” and we never got fully dressed. We were sometimes on stage singing while he was buckling his belt or I was buttoning my shirt – although I think that added to the flirtation of the song.

Andrews-Katz: When the revival of South Pacific opened at Lincoln Center, it was the first Broadway production since the 1949 original. Did you feel any extra pressures when playing Nellie Forbush?

O’Hara: It’s interesting. I tried to stay out of that mind set. First of all, I never knew how many people came back who saw the original production. I knew it wasn’t the same way Mary Martin had played the role – we are different. I got support and had confidence that they would forget about the original. I try never to put too much attention on previous versions – it ruins it. I’ve always tried to assume that this was never done before.

Andrews-Katz: What musical similarities/differences do you notice between grandfather/grandson when you sing songs

by Richard Rodgers (South Pacific) and Adam Guettel (The Light in the Piazza)?

O’Hara: That’s an interesting question.

Adam will tell you that the last thing his grandfather (Richard Rodgers) told him was that he found his own voice. That’s important. Adam doesn’t sound like Rodgers; he sounds like himself. If it [the music] sounds

similar, it’s because Adam is doing homage.

When you sing Rodgers’ music, it’s a round, classic feel of original sound. When you’re singing Adam, it only represents the exact feeling of what you are singing at the time.

He writes for the moment. Nothing ever sounds the same. It’s brilliantly crafted.

Both men are very different and very brilliant, in my opinion.

Andrews-Katz: How did you choose the songs you are singing with the Seattle Men’s Chorus?

O’Hara: I spoke a little to Dennis [Coleman] about the songs I love to sing and that represent me. I chose a few and then put a few holiday songs in that would sound good with the chorus. We are also singing “A Wonderful Guy” [from South Pacific] with the boys being the guy. I am also putting in my favorite kind of song, called, “They Don’t Let You in the Opera if You’re a Country Star.”

Andrews-Katz: What part of the holidays do you look forward to the most?

O’Hara: I’m kind of a purist. I’m not a big spender or commercial like that. My favorite part is being with my family, fireplaces, and great meals.

Andrews-Katz: On your CD, Wonder in the World, you sing some songs composed

by Greg Naughton. Was it difficult to work with your husband on such a personal project?

O’Hara: No, it’s kind of funny. When Greg and I work together, we have to laugh.

When you are married, all the professional politeness goes out the window. He likes to hear his song “The Sun Went Out” when I sing it, because I do it differently. We get along fine, though, and he’s very generous and professional to work with.

Andrews-Katz: If you could go back and create any leading role from any musical, male or female, which would it be?

O’Hara: I think I’m going to have to say the ultimate role, Margaret Johnson from The Light in the Piazza. I can honestly say that I wouldn’t have done it as well as Vicky Clark. She is magic.

Andrews-Katz: After Seattle, what’s next on your performing agenda?

O’Hara: I always have several little concerts here and there in December. In January, I’m doing the Kurt Weill musical, The Knickerbocker Holiday with the New York Philharmonic, directed by Ted Sperling.

“Scratch,” BG5’s debut single, is set for a November 30 release, so Seattle fans will get a special sneak peak at the song. “Our show is full of energy and will make you wanna dance,” said Brooke. “We sing, we dance, and it’s really obvious that we have a blast with each other onstage.”

Brooke says that the girls of BG5 “Love our Gay supporters! Our performances at Gay clubs are always a blast. There’s so much fun and happiness.”

Although BG5 is all about having fun and dancing, Brooke told SGN that the proGay pop group advocates anti-bullying. “In times like these, where anti-Gay bullying is rampant, it is important to us that our Gay fans know that we love and support them.”
