Spandex ’s crime- Kelly Clarkson adorable – fighting Gay heroes and loud – at WaMu

by Shaun Knittel SGN Staff Writer Spandex, a new comic magazine featuring a gang of Gay superheroes, has taken the United Kingdom by storm. Based in Brighton, the gang is led by glamorous transvestite Liberty and is the first of its kind in Great Britain. While other comics have featured Gay charac-

ters, the country has never had a Gay crime-fighting team.

For 10 years, creator Martin Eden worked with another comic, The O Men. While working on the superhero soap opera, he said, some of the Gay supporting characters began to grab his attention.

Kelly Clarkson November 24 WaMu Theater How many musicians can Kelly Clarkson fit on a stage? A lot – and she used every one of them during her 90-minute set Tuesday night at WaMu Theater.

The two-time Grammy winner opened her show with “All I Ever Wanted,” the title track from her latest album, standing next to the drumset at the back of the stage, then walking down a ramp that extended to the front. Next, she belted out “Miss Independent,” the second hit following her American Idol win several years ago.

“I love the weather. I love the rain,” said Clarkson to a near-filled house. Dressed in black bellbottoms, lime-colored top and a short black jacket with sparkles, the pop star was immediately greeted with shouts and whistles from the crowd, which included a significant percentage of well-groomed Gay men.

A mash-up of Alanis Morissette’s “That I Would Be Good” and Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” was an interesting mix.

Jazz vocalist Kenny Washington’s house concerts Grammy noms likely e. Joyce glasgow

Bay-area jazz vocalist Kenny Washington has been making waves lately. His high-profile appearances with top jazz vibraphonist Joe Locke at Dizzy’s Club CocaCola in New York have given him a great forum to display his talent.

They were performing the songs of Henry Mancini off Locke’s recent CD, Cinema Paradiso. Seattle-area audiences were given a chance to enjoy Washington’s musicianship as well this past weekend in two intimate salon-style duo concerts featuring Washington, with Seattle jazz pianist Bill Anschell.

Both performances were produced by local jazz vocalist Nich Anderson, who told me that he started this ongoing vocal series to support jazz vocalists and give opportunities for people in outlying areas, to have easy access to great, live jazz. One performance was in Auburn, WA, and the other, which I attended, was in a beautiful home overlooking the water on Camano Island.

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Equivocation Seattle Repertory Theatre Through December 13 A fascinating new play opened at Seattle Rep last week, imported from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Equivocation is a sophisticated fictional history. It supposes what might have happened if King James 1 had asked Shakespeare to write a propagandized play in favor of the monarch’s version of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. If your knowledge of English history runs toward, “I know there were a few King Henrys and then Queen Elizabeth and Shakespeare wrote during Queen Elizabeth’s reign,” you’re probably already a far bit ahead of many.

To contextualize: King Henry VIII wanted to divorce a wife, but since the Pope wouldn’t let him, he created the Protestant Church of England. After he died, his daughter Mary (Bloody Mary) made England Catholic again, then Elizabeth I made it Protestant and James 1 (of Scotland) was expected to make it Catholic again. When he didn’t, there was a plot to blow up the Parliament building by making a bomb room under the throne room, filling it with gunpowder. The plot was leaked and the conspirators were killed.

Equivocation postulates that Shakespeare is asked to write a “current events” play about the plot which glorifies the king. Robert Cecil, the king’s right hand, basically indicates that Shakespeare either does that or dies. But what if there really wasn’t a plot?

What if Cecil made it up to gain the king sympathy? Torture a few guys to confess, get people outraged at their behavior, unify the country….

Playwright Bill Cain weaves in plot lines that are reminiscent of modern events: the plot to blow up the Twin Towers, torture to get information one wants, the government lying to “unify” the country toward an at-

There was definite energy coming from the artist, who just two nights prior had performed on the American Music Awards, but she appeared a bit worn out as opposed to her fresher and sharper performance at White River Amphitheatre in 2006.

Another cover, a re-do of “Lies” from indie act The Black Keys, was satisfactory, yet it absorbed time that could’ve been devoted to an original number. Later in the show, Clarkson included a bluesy version of Patsy Cline’s “Walkin’ After Midnight” and a poppish rendition of “Seven Nation Army”

by The White Stripes. The Cline cover was nice and swingy, but I don’t know what Clarkson was thinking when she decided to tackle a Jack White tune, and a modern rock classic at that; it just didn’t work.

On the contrary, an acoustic run-through of “Behind These Hazel Eyes” was gorgeous, a better version than on the album.

Ditto for a pleasing rendition of “Because of You.” “Walk Away” featured the native Texan’s vocals at their prime, and again the crowd joined her in singing each and every word.

Clarkson then closed out the main set of the program with “Since U Been Gone,” her most recognized hit single.

A four-song encore included her current smash, “Already Gone,” and an exuberant version of “My Life Would Suck Without You,” which allowed nearly the entire main floor to bounce up and down feverishly. The final portion of the show found Clarkson in a slight costume change, pulling her strawberry blonde hair in a ponytail and slipping into a lavender shirt with a glittery jacket.

Adept actors anchor scintillating Equivocation

titude it wants the country to have (propaganda), and the idea of equivocation, which is described as “telling the truth in difficult situations.”

Cain points to our love of “truth,” and asks what it is. “Would hide the king in your house? … And if an enemy comes to the door and asks if the king is inside, what would you say?” Betray your oath to your king? Risk death to yourself if found out?

What is being “true to yourself” in this situation?

We love absolutes. We want everything to boil down to them. We want to judge people as good or evil based on them. And yet, all adults know intrinsically that there are no such absolutes. This is the puzzle that Equivocation is based on. Even though Shakespeare (referred to herein as “Shagspeare”) knows that Robert Cecil is lying, he still wants to believe him.

The dialogue is scintillating, and the production is riveting and will be sure to cause hours of fun discussion and argument. Six remarkably adept actors play multiple roles, lead by Anthony Heald (of Boston Public and Boston Legal fame) as Shagspeare.

Their character control is so good that it seems that many more than six people are at work. Since their differentiation is so distinct it is sometimes hard to notice the same actor performing a different role.

One woman, Christine Albright, plays Shagspeare’s daughter. The role itself is problematic, either because it’s not written large enough or because it’s written too large. Shagspeare had fraternal twins and her brother twin died. Shagspeare then says he began loving his son the minute he was dead. While a startlingly truthful statement, his struggle to “see” his son in his daughter’s reflection is one of the play’s complexities – one that might have been left out and not caused much of a reason to miss it.

Liberty, the team’s transvestite leader, wears a female power suit and possesses “Gaydar,” or danger sense.

The rest of the team is just as colorful.

There’s Dive, the beautiful and sexy Lesbian “Wonder Woman”; human light Glitter, the group’s twink who can fly at super-speed and shoot lasers; Mr. Muscles, a gym bunny strong man; strong and sultry Butch, Mr. Muscle’s Lesbian twin sister; and Indigo, a French teleporter named after the Lesbian rock group, Indigo Girls.

The most interesting character, according to Eden, is Prowler, who has the power to absorb the skills and abilities of any Gay person. “So that could mean taking the powers of a teammate or enemy – or just learning how to throw a fab dinner party,” joked Eden.

“Prowler is a really important character to me, and he took a long time to develop and get right,” Eden told SGN. “I think I identify with his practical, optimistic attitude to life, and I love him to bits. I adore drawing his spiky hair. He has a tail, too, and there’s a

story behind that.”

Those are the main seven characters, but there’s a massive supporting cast. There’s feline villain Pussy, giant villainess 50-foot Queenie, fluorescent Gay ninja Neon, and British superspy James Bend, to name a few.

The first issue, currently available, took Eden one year to produce. The artist says he spent most of the time adapting to drawing a full color comic and “making sure to get it right.” Spandex is somewhat of a side-project for Eden, who works a fulltime day job.

Eden says the age demographic is 16 years old or older because “the comic contains strong language, adult scenes and nudity.” However, he said Spandex is not pornographic.

The comic is doing well in London, Eden said, but he’s made the first issue available in the U.S. as well.

“The success of the comic has taken me completely by surprise,” Eden told SGN. Spandex has done so well, in fact, that a second mass printing of the comic is in the works. In addition, there are plans to make a book with up to five issues inside.

“Spandex introduces a whole bunch of fabulous new characters who are set to take the comic world by storm,” Eden said. “It’s a fun, experimental comic, full of drama, comedy, romance and action … all done in the best possible taste!”

House concerts have become all the rage in the Seattle area lately, and I can see why.

They really give the much-needed opportunity for people to gather pleasantly together in the spirit of community and friendship.

Kenny Washington performed a number of jazz standards in two sets with Anschell, a very creative and accomplished pianist who embodies a musical sensitivity which compliments the vocalists that he performs with. Washington has a relaxed, hip and comfortable vocal style, and an expressive, soulful and rich voice. Highlights of Washington’s vocal performance were on tunes where he “stretched out” and improvised, scat-singing and exploring his considerable range, including his falsetto. His tunes included “Bewitched,” a lively, swinging “Route 66,” “Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me,” the Brazilian Bossa Nova tune “Desifinado,” Miles Davis’ “All Blues,” Duke Ellington’s “A Train,” and “Lover Come Back to Me,” with special guest Andy Carr sitting in on piano. I like Washington most when he takes on ballads, giving the audience more of a chance to journey with him into his inner, reflective self. He sang a wonderful rendition of the ballad “Everything Happens to Me.” These concerts are a special way to enjoy yourself, either alone or as a satisfying gettogether with friends or family for an afternoon or evening of terrific music.

Ninja brings buckets of blood to the holidays

Ninja Assassin opening November 25 In one scene in the new martial arts spectacle that is Ninja Assassin, the action is so fluid that it almost seemed like a gory ballet.

My partner, who went to the movie with me, agreed, and also commented on the buckets of fake blood used in the film’s grimmer scenes. The mayhem starts in the opening 10 minutes, when some Yakuza baddies get sliced and diced by quick and deadly ninjas.

The plot – what there is of one – resembles any GI Joe type of film. A spunky government agent (pretty Naomie Harris) tries to get her boss (Ben Miles) to listen to her concerns about a gang of “invisible” clans killing people. He pooh-poohs the idea at first, but as orders from up top start showing up via “men in black” types searching his office and seizing files, he starts to change his mind and begins to worry that his coworker might not only be on to something, but that they’re both in grave danger. Oh, and there’s a muscled “rogue ninja” (Rain) getting ready for a showdown with the ninja clan he betrayed years ago when he refused to follow orders to kill a runaway ninja female warrior/trainee.

Mostly though, there are singing katanas, body parts being flung through the air as

sword and bodies meet in gruesome, but almost beautifully violent clashes in one battle after another between our rogue ninja and his former cohorts. One can recognize the work of the Wachowski brothers (makers of the Matrix films) in the choreographed fight scenes that very much resemble Neo’s battle with the Mr. Smiths in the last Matrix film. James McTeigue directs Ninja Assassin, but the Wachowski brothers produce, so this film is more action than good dialogue or plausible plot. Still, even though there’s enough blood flying around to fill four bathtubs and very little other interaction between the characters, Ninja Assassin is fun.

Even if you like your action fast, furious and full of bloody fight scenes – which, I have to admit, I do – some of the scenes may make you put your hand over your mouth in horror and astonishment. That the movie is opening on Thanksgiving is a bit macabre, but this seems to be a tradition Hollywood is sticking to; introducing movies that cater to the dark side in the dark time of the year, rather than giving us loads of sticky-sweet holiday fare.

Bottom line, this is not a film for the timid of heart, but ninja fans and action fans will love it. Just don’t take any little ones (as some stupid person did on the night of the screening), as this will undoubtedly give them nightmares for weeks. While it won’t win any Oscars, it is one helluva thrill ride.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN Contributing Writer Fantastic Mr. Fox Opening November 25 After a chicken robbery goes dangerously wrong, the confidently easygoing Mr. Fox (George Clooney) trades a career of deathdefying exploits and escapes for the quiet life of a newspaperman, at the urging of his pregnant wife Mrs. Fox (Meryl Streep). But domesticity is not all it’s cracked up to be, and after 12 quiet years, the cagey animal returns to his wild ways and targets the farms of evil and mean Boggis (Robin Hurlstone), Bunce (Hugo Guinness) and Bean (Michael Gambon) for his triumphant return to thievery.

While at first things go well, the frazzled farmers attempt to exact their revenge trapping the Fox family – including son Ash (Jason Schwartzman) and his cousin Kristofferson (Eric Anderson) – and the rest of the local animal community underground in the

sewers. Running out of food and time, Mr. Fox bands everyone together to use their own natural instincts to combat their foes, save their lives and make Boggis, Bunce and Bean look like the grotesquely grubby fools they are.

Based on the classic books by Roald Dahl, writer (working once more with Noah Baumbach) and director Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox is a stop-motion marvel that just so happens to be a perfect addition to his quirky character-driven filmography.

Like Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums and The Darjeeling Limited before it, this animated sensation is an odd, wildly funny enterprise that ranks as one of the year’s finest achievements.

In all honesty, I’m not sure how much Dahl is left in Anderson and Baumbach’s highly anachronistic screenplay. Mr. Fox, his family and his friends don’t speak with any of the same cadences you’d find in, say, Matilda or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, acting instead like the same arch, supremely focused and highly sarcastic souls found in just about all of the director’s works. These characters are Anthony Adams and Dignan all over again, but while they’re still walking around on two legs their inherent natures are far more, if you’ll excuse lingo, animalistic.

Yet the spirit behind all the chaos and insanity is still distinctly Dahl’s. The irreverence is of the author’s world, and watching it I couldn’t help but think he’d applaud if he’d ended up having the opportunity to see what Anderson had done with his story.

show people – most of all youngsters – facing their obstacles with tenacity and courage. He liked to show that authority is sometimes worth mocking, all the while offering up a warmhearted moral that spoke to the way life should be.

On a purely narrative level, this is easily the director’s best film since Rushmore.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is a consistent marvel, going from highs to lows to all the places inbetween with a cocksure confidence that’s perfectly awesome. The characters pop off the screen, and between the sublime animation to the superb vocal work there isn’t a single moment or scene that doesn’t ring hysterically true.

I’m not sure what else there is to say. So many moments and lines are beyond sensational, verbal jousts between Clooney and Bill Murray (playing the lawyerly Mr. Badger) twisting into a series of grunts and

snarls before morphing back once again into pleasantly silly conversations about the health of the wife and kids. For me, Schwartzman’s Ash has many of the best lines – his dismantling of his lab partner is so on the money that just thinking about it now is making me giggle even as I try to write this review.

Like all of Anderson’s surreal creations, I imagine his form of comedy isn’t going to be for everyone. Combined with the stylized animation and the eccentric vocal work of his all-star cast, I fear a lot of this is going to fly right over the majority of viewers’ heads.

Pity, because if that ends up being the case, audiences are going to miss out on a film that will tickle their funny bones like little else this year. When all is said and done, Fantastic Mr. Fox is, well, fantastic, and to call it anything else would be a horse (or maybe a fox) of a different color.

Enjoying the sounds at Jazz Alley, Triple Door

by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer Mose Allison Mercy and Cuteness enjoyed Mose Allison at Jazz Alley very much. His band, with Phil Sparks on bass and Michael Peterson on drums, communicated with each other well.

The group opened with “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” one of Allison’s nicely comic creations. Mercy liked to watch Mose’s hands tickling the keys on the piano and listen to his rich, full voice.

The set continued with “When I Get to My City Home,” and “If You Go to the City,” two songs that compliment each other. Next they played “Tell Me Something.” Mercy liked these lyrics from that song: “You say there’s some mistake/You didn’t get your break/You don’t see the magic in the moonglow/You’re on a one-way street/Your life is incomplete/Well, tell me something I don’t know.”

“I’m Only Kidding You” was another fun original. Mose followed with a song by Nadine Cole that had written for Nat, “I Just Can’t See For Looking.” Mercy liked to watch the bass player’s serious smile dimple his cheeks with the nice solo he played. Allison continued with “I Feel So Good It Must Be Wrong,” with nice energy. The singer gave Ellington’s “Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me” wings.

“Certified Senior Citizen” and “Looks Good on Paper,” made Mercy and Cuteness laugh with painful recognition. The singer showed his light touch on the piano with “How Does It Feel to Be So Good Looking.”

“Your Mind is on Vacation” had Mose’s raw humor. The respect that showed between him and Sparks after an elegant solo was satisfying to watch.

Leon Russell Mercy and her friend Rhythm found the waiter at the Triple Door’s Leon Russell show knowledgeable and friendly. Mercy’s contact there tells her they have made some changes to improve service. She was impressed that it has indeed improved.

Meanwhile, the show knocked them out.

Russell’s distinctive gruff voice was right on. His long hair and whiskers have turned white. The band of Brian Lee on piano, Jackie Wessel on bass, Chris Simmons on guitar and Brandon Holder on drums was excellent. The opening number, “Jumping Jack Flash,” rocked. Rhythm whispered to Mercy, “They are so together.” She also pointed out people were up and dancing.

“Papa Was a Rolling Stone” continued the upbeat performance. “Kansas City” had soul and a smart keyboard solo. Jackie Wessel and Chris Simmons showed off nice backup vocals on “Kansas City Woman.” Chris Simmons sang the lead on “Let the Good Times Roll,” and “Any Way You Want Me to Go,” with his powerful voice.

Russell took the lead back with forceful performances of “Back to the Highway,”

“Wild Horses,” and “Hard Rain is Going to Fall.” “Don’t Fly Away,” and “I’ve Just Seen a Face” also were high points. “Georgia” had a great keyboard solo.

“A Man’s Got to Do What a Man’s Got to Do” had people up and dancing. Jackie Wessel sang the lead and did a nice bass solo on “Old Walking Blues” with his expressive voice. Rhythm thought he looked like a Beatle.

The lead returned to Russell for “That Lucky Old Sun,” which Brian Lee did a luscious piano solo on. The singer nailed “I’m Singing this Song For You,” “Rolling in my Sweet Baby’s Arms” and “Roll Over Beethoven.” Mercy and Rhythm were surprised the group didn’t play an encore. The band was in synch all night.

Mercy had intended to get to the Rain Country nights at Neighbours, but didn’t get there soon enough. She was disappointed that the evening there was cancelled for lack of interest.

Best New Artist Of the four major categories, Best New Artist is the toughest to predict because of an impressive list of prospects. At the top, Grizzly Bear, the critical darling, yet perhaps too-under-the-radar for Grammy voters. MGMT, who missed out on a BNA nod last year, could find themselves in contention this time around. The Zac Brown Band are the strongest candidates to represent the country field, as Lady Antebellum did in ‘08. Keri Hilson could squeeze in here, a boost to the resurging R&B genre, while former American Idol winner David Cook might fill the pop slot (Adam Lambert is not eligible this year). Singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson has a shot, as does rapper Asher Roth. Alternative contenders include Animal Collective, Passion Pit, The Ting-Tings, Silversun Pickups, and longshot Fuck Buttons.

Lady GaGa is sure to scoop up two nominations in the Dance/Electronica categories, not to mention a Best Female Pop Vocal nod for “Poker Face” and a Best Rap/Sung Collaboration mention for “Chillin’” (with Wale). Beyonce will dominate the R&B field, as will Houston and fellow comeback story Maxwell. U2 and Green Day will gain multiple nods in the rock categories, while Swift and Carrie Underwood are sure to march ahead of the pack in the country genre. And, fingers crossed for Phoenix in the Alternative Music Album category, Mason Jennings in the re-named Americana Album list, sure to include Roseanne Cash (mark my words), and my prayers are being said for Neko Case, in hopes that she finally gets acknowledged somewhere, anywhere.
