Out of Annapolis is a timely 71-minute film chronicling the lives and travails of Gay Navy Academy alumni. The powerful film is set against the backdrop of the ongoing dilemma that surrounds the proposal to repeal the military’s Gay ban, known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT), which prohibits openly Gay men and Lesbian women from serving in the U.S. military.

The film is produced by retired Commander Steve Clark Hall who graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1975 and served in the Navy for 20 years. Hall had a very successful career as a Naval officer – in fact, at some point in his career, the attack submarines Greenling and Drum were under his command.

Out of Annapolis is about the lives of several Gay alumni of the Naval Academy, and was produced by a group that represents 190 LGBT alumni. Eleven Gay alumni share their experiences in the film through interviews.

Amy Sedaris talks Queers and crafts

She’s at it again with Simple Times: Crafts for Poor People, turning to the Queer world of crafting in her good ol’ days follow-up to 2006’s I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence.

Before Sedaris tried making quirky how-to books – that, depending on what you’d do with a sausage hut or Dutch bonnet (which, by the way, can be made

from the book jacket), are completely impractical, but out-there hilarious – she found a loyal following through Strangers with Candy. The decade-old Comedy Central show, on which she played Bisexual high school student Jerri Blank, became a cult hit, and then a 2006 movie.

Marwencol a mentally fascinating journey of self-discovery

Marwencol Opening November 26 In April of 2000, Mark Hogancamp was assaulted outside a Kingston, NY bar by five men. They pummeled him to the brink of death, leaving him so disfigured even his own mother didn’t recognize him. After 40 days in a coma Mark awoke to discover he had little to no memory of his previous life, and unable to afford continuing care or physical and emotional therapy he was discharged and sent home to fend for himself.

In order to help himself retain some semblance of sanity and to facilitate recovery, Mark builds Marwencol, a 1/6 scale WWIIera town he populates with Barbie Dolls and G.I. Joes that he meticulously clothes and reengineers to look like people from his life. As the world he has created begins to grow, he starts telling intricate stories using his characters set during the war but also somewhat consciously based upon his own frazzled memories about things before, during, and after his attack. He takes pictures of these tales, creating a massive visual history of a place and time blossoming from his own weary, yet vivid, imagination.

That’s only the tip of the iceberg as far as Jeff Malmberg’s Marwencol is concerned.

If anything, the movie is a boon to art therapists. There is something wholly personal about what the act of creation can unlock, what secrets it might unintentionally uncover. For Mark, his creative expressionism involving dolls and the world he manufactures for them is the key to helping him recover from an event too deplorable to imagine.

What was done to him – and for the apparent reasons disclosed near the end of the picture – is of striking inhumanity. The level of intolerance shown by his attackers another reason why national hate crime laws that cover everyone no matter what race, nationality, religion, creed, sexual orientation, or gender expression are of such import.

Malmberg goes over everything with a delicate and astonishing touch. He inserts himself into Mark’s life with restraint, never pushing things to an extent you feel like harm is being done, but also finding a way to ask questions that could end up doing his subject a modicum of good. This is a documentary where the filmmaker can’t help but become a part of the story, and for once that’s a plus and not a minus, the two engaging in a cathartic friendship that’s honest and heartwarming.

There is plenty here for audiences to mull over. From a strictly artistic perspective, Mark’s creations end up speaking loudly for themselves. From the standpoint of the importance of access to mental health care for people in need, there is much in the way of food for thought. But for me, it is the human drama of one man tackling his own injustice through a lens distinctly of his own design that is the most important. Marwencol is a journey into the subconscious of ct the troops.

Starting with Dan Fogelman’s (Bolt, Cars) remarkable script, moving on to the marvelous vocal work by the entire cast and finishing up with Oscar-winner Alan Menken’s (The Little Mermaid) music and Glenn Slater’s (Home on the Range) superb lyrics, everything about this borders on perfection. Watching it is akin to pure bliss, the smile on my face steadily increasing all the way from first delectable frame to last.

As for the animation itself, there are moments here that rival anything Pixar has ever put to celluloid. The entire first meeting between Rapunzel and Flynn is a major wow, while a singing inner monologue by the heroine describing her typical day is a beguiling winner. But the sequence that really made me hold my breath came just before the start of the final act, as our two potential lovebirds get a boat’s-eye view of a blizzard of flying lanterns that left me thunderstruck in awe. It’s one

Is it all a bit slight? Sure it is, this being a fanciful Disneyfied fairy tale after all. But just because that’s so doesn’t make any of it less remarkable. There hasn’t been a CG animated film like this one – none of them echo the pure unadulterated joy of classically animated Disney like this does. You get the feeling as the film progresses that Tangled has every oppor tunity to enter the timeless canon, to be as fondly remembered as Cinderella, as Sleeping Beauty, as Beauty and the Beast.

Time will be the final judge and jury there, or course, and when we revisit the picture in a decade or so, hopefully I’ll be waxing just as poetic then as I am now. But right now, my heart is soaring beyond the moon over the glories of Tangled. This movie made me feel bushels of ecstasy as it resplendently filled my heart with glee. I am beyond enamored with it, and this Thanksgiving holiday, I can’t think of a more satisfactory treat than the ability to introduce my two young nieces to an animated treasure they’ll keep enjoying into their adolescence and beyond. ©Disney Enterprises, Inc. Tangled Now Playing Once upon a time, a pregnant queen was slowly dying. To save his beloved, her husband the king sent his people on a quest for a mythical magical flower that could cure all illnesses. Finding it, they broke the plant down into an elixir, feeding it to the queen and thus saving both her life and that of her unborn child.

But the evil Mother Gothel (voiced by Donna Murphy) knows intimately the power of the flower the queen has ingested, and sneaks into the palace and kidnaps the beautiful blonde-haired princess shortly after her birth. For 18 years, she has raised Rapunzel (voiced by Mandy Moore) as her own, using the magic within her hair to maintain her own youth and beauty.

Trapped within a high tower, this young woman longs to see the world, to discover why there are flickering lights off in the distance above the royal castle every year on the night of her birth. Teaming up with a wondering rogue named Flynn Ryder (voiced Zachary Levi), she breaks Mother Gothel’s number-one rule and finds a way outside of the home which has been her prison for so long. In the process, she discovers a world she never could have imagined, a horrible truth she never would have believed, and a potential love no one – not even the unflappable Ryder – could have anticipated.

Inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Tangled is the Walt Disney Company’s first computer animated feature that mostly closely echoes their beloved hand-drawn catalog. It is a superlative piece of family entertainment that might just be one of the year’s very best motion pictures, and along with Pixar’s Toy Story 3 and DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon, it is a wonderful effort bordering on being timeless.

I have to say, not since Beauty and the Beast have I been so thoroughly and completely caught off guard by an animated

Ron Anders: How is Seattle treating you?

Armistead Maupin: Well, I have my own goldfish in my hotel room! I walked into the room, and there’s a little sign that says “Hello, my name is Andrea.” And they explain it’s supposed to keep you from getting lonely. It made me terribly depressed for Andrea – and they move her from room to room like a tart!

Anders: Is your husband with you on this trip?

Maupin: No. He told me not too long ago that, as much as he loves being with me, tours are a drag because he feels like Dr. Phil’s wife – the person who’s in the audience who waves periodically. That made me laugh and see the light.

Anders: What does he think about the portrayal of Michael and his partner in your books?

Maupin: We laugh about it because people have a hard time deciding what’s real and what isn’t. But he’s cool with it. He knows that I’m spinning fiction out of things that I know that sometimes happened to us, not necessarily always. He’s not somebody who seeks the spotlight. He is who he is and that’s why I love him so much.

Anders: I hear that there is an upcoming musical version of Tales of the City.

would be the next to go. And that’s how the death of Jon Fielding came about – the first AIDS fatality in fiction anywhere. A lot of Gay people were pissed off. They said, “You spoiled our light morning entertainment.”

Because people were still uttering complete nonsense in a sort of panic denial. When I was public about Rock Hudson’s sexuality – I was the first person to be, actually – I felt that if I didn’t talk about it in a responsible way, he’d be a victim of the tabloids. There’d be no dignity around it at all Anders: I know that it’s considered like a chronic disease for a lot of younger people now.

Maupin: It’s a whole different thing. It shouldn’t be. People are still dying from it and as any person who’s HIV-positive will tell you, it’s hellish. The meds alone can do terrible things to you.

Anders: Do you have groupies?

Maupin: Not nearly enough! The fans that I meet are really sweet, and they’re not just Gay, either. A lot of people identify with the general message of the books: be yourself and get on with it.

Anders: A few years ago, I belatedly discovered that you interviewed Mary Badham, who played Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird at a tribute to the film at the Castro Theater in San Francisco.

Maupin: She was the loveliest person, with a great sense of humor. You know Rock Hudson was cast as Atticus, or read for it or something. But Gregory Peck got to do it.

And so Rock and Mary became friends. She told me about going to the Oscars that year and she said that she had the amazing thrill of riding on Rock Hudson’s shoulders. And I said “What a coincidence, so did I!” And she threw her head back and laughed and I loved little Scout more than ever!

Clay Aiken backs anti-bullying legislation On November 18, Aiken was a speaker at a Capitol Hill briefing, organized by Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) officials to draw public attention to the Safe Schools Improvement Act and the Student Non-Discrimination Act. The two pieces of legislation would require school officials across the U.S. to address bullying and harassment aimed at LGBTQ students.

Aiken made an impassioned plea for lawmakers to pass the bills. He used his own childhood experiences of bullying as an example of why LGBTQ students need safeguarding.

He told the hearing, “Like many kids now in middle schools and high schools, I was bullied. I was picked on, I was called ‘Gay,’ I Clay Aiken was called ‘faggot,’ I was called ‘sissy’ – you name it. Fortunately,

Fans of Armistead Maupin’s iconic Tales of the City series are happy campers these days. The latest book in the series, MaryAnn in Autumn, has just started flying off bookstore shelves. Begun as a daily serial in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1976, the stories of the denizens of 28 Barbary Lane captured the San Francisco zeitgeist of the 1970s. They have become an international phenomenon, spawning eight books, three award-winning miniseries and an upcoming musical. I caught up with Armistead on the Seattle stop of his recent whirlwind reading tour. Here are highlights from my interview with him.

Anders: Some years ago, the Seattle Men’s Chorus did a choral piece based on Michael’s coming-out letter to his parents.

Maupin: That’s right. They developed it and David Maddux wrote that beautiful version. That was my actual letter to my parents. That piece alone has traveled all over the place with choruses and now Jake Shears of The Scissor Sisters has adapted it into a beautiful little song for the musical.

He’s from Seattle, by the way.

Anders: The books have become an international phenomenon!

Maupin: They’re most popular in France.

I always hesitate to say that because people will say: “Oh, like Jerry Lewis!” But, per capita, I think there are more French readers than any other kind. It’s very popular in Britain. It’s started to catch on in Italy now Anders: What did you think of the “It Gets Better” campaign?

Maupin: It is a brilliant concept – quite revolutionary in its own way because it’s calling upon Gay adults to lead the way for Gay kids. I think a lot of people were reluctant for far too long to be vocal about it for fear of being accused of recruiting youth or any of that nonsense. So it struck a chord, not just for troubled kids, but with adults, who came to ask what their responsibility is as grown-ups.

Anders: You went to the Academy Awards with Laura Linney when she was nominated for Best Actress in 2000. What was the Oscar experience like for you?

Maupin: Talk about a queen’s dream come true! Laura said the red carpet would be really freaky, but not to let it get to me, because once you’re inside the building, it would be lovely. It would be like the best high school prom in the world. And it was!

We sat in the front row and John Leguizamo and his Gay brother were sitting behind us making the most hilarious wisecracks in the world because you could see all the rigging of the production numbers. I remember when Bob Dylan appeared on the big screen to sing, Leguizamo said, “My God, it’s Salvador Dali!”

Anders: So you and Laura Linney are close friends….

Maupin: I asked Laura to read a poem at

my wedding when Christopher and I were married. And she came and read it and said she loved it so much. A few months later she called me and asked me to read it at her wedding. That friendship is one of the great, great side effects of Tales of the City from my standpoint.

Anders: That reminds me of the first shot of the miniseries, with Mary-Ann and the Vertigo opening. I thought I’d died and went to heaven.

Maupin: Well, I thought I’d died and went to heaven when Alastair Reid, our director, said he was a huge fan of Vertigo. He asked me if I thought it would be too much if we did Vertigo references! Because Hitchcock is my biggest literary influence, it’s no accident that people keep falling from high places in Tales of the City.

Anders: Do you feel optimistic about the current sociopolitical climate?

Maupin: Yes. I’m very excited about the way the world is changing. I didn’t see Glee the other night, but I hear it’s a dream come true for a lot of people. It’s online, but I’m afraid to watch it because I have a little pact with my husband not to get ahead of what we’ve seen so far. The world is changing now and it’s changing because all of those people knew how good it felt to be out back in the early ‘70s. If I have any nostalgia, it’s towards the people that I lost that didn’t get to take the ride with me. And I never complain about being old because of it.

Anders: I remember visiting San Francisco in the early 1990s and the city seemed totally bereft from the AIDS epidemic.

Maupin: There was a period there when the whole town was in shock and panic.

Not only were you losing your friends to the most horrible thing imaginable, but there was a strong chance that you yourself

dedicated to providing emotional support programs, stability, advocacy, and AIDS education for children and teens affected

by HIV/AIDS, including children and teens who have been orphaned by the disease, children and teens who live with a parent or other close family member with HIV/AIDS, and those who are infected themselves.

Special performances included Coco Vaughn (Olympia XXVI), Lily Armani, and Zora (Miss Gay Seattle XXVII).

The pageant brought together many people from the court’s history, including some who won their titles more than 20 years ago and some who no longer reside in Seattle and made the journey back to see the new titleholders crowned.

“I’ve enjoyed representing the court and, hopefully, I’m passing on a title to my successor that they can represent with pride,” said GLAMAZONIA. The Imperial Sovereign Court of Seattle and the Olympic and Rainier Empire is a 501(c)(3) non-profit social/charitable organization whose purpose is to provide funds and services to other non-profits within the Gay and Lesbian community of Seattle and King County.

The Dandy Warhols’ Mia McCabe cites M.I.A, pulled pork, and Gay community as faves tayf

The last time Zia McCabe – founding member and musician of indie rock band The Dandy Warhols – and I chatted was when the band played a free show a little over seven years ago at the infamous Popstarz indie rock club night at The Scala in London. At that time, the band was promoting their acclaimed fourth album Welcome to the Monkeyhouse (2003), and was headlining one of the biggest Queer nights out in all of Europe. But now, many years, albums,

and commercial successes later, we were connected through a cellular conversation between Seattle and Atlanta hours before the band was scheduled onstage in support of a greatest hits collection titled The Capitol Years, 1995-2007.

While trying on clothes at a local H&M department store, McCabe asked for my opinion of the “very cute gray tunic” she planned to buy while offering her perspectives on the band and her home life. day. Given that she was dress shopping, I asked her for her impressions of being the sole female band member. She explained to me that with lead vocalist Courtney Taylor-Taylor, guitarist Peter Holmstrom, and drummer Brent De Boer being the boys in the band, she occupies an ironic space.

“Sometimes I wonder if I do something different than the guys, I wonder if it’s because I’m a girl,” she said. But as the only girl, she added, “I don’t want girl competition anyway – I have always been happier around guys.”

As the interview became a dialogue in which McCabe asked me about my own life, she began to muse on her own family life.

Having married Travis Hendricks in 2001, the couple has a baby daughter named Matilda Louise who McCabe describes as “a total Scorpio like both my parents and many important people in my life.”

“I love motherhood. But this is the first tour that they [Hendricks and Matilda Louise] haven’t been with me. We Skype every day, but I missed Halloween and her birthday, so it’s kind of hard.” She then mischievously disclosed to me that she was also birthday shopping for Matilda (for toys rather than gray tunics).

The Dandy Warhols, as their name suggests, have always been plugged into lofty pop cultural circuits. Her bandmates have claimed the Velvet Underground, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles as musical influences, while the band name invokes Andy Warhol, one of the most influential pop artists of the 20th century. I asked McCabe what current music influences the band. “That changes a lot,” she said.

“Pete [Holmstrum] has been playing a lot of 1950s rockabilly, and I’ve been listening to Harry Nielson’s ‘Jump Into the Fire’ a lot.

But M.I.A. is probably my fave,” she said.

She added that, right now, pulled pork is one of her favorite foods, but also likes sushi.

“I usually go for an avocado roll and miso soup.”

As McCabe continued to stroll through the store describing many of the cute outfits she was thinking of purchasing, she recognized the loyal Gay following the band has had since its formation in Portland in 1993. “I like the Gay community,” she said. “I don’t want to ruin their form and don’t think anyone else should either.” She mused at how many people have surmised that both Taylor-Taylor (who is married) and

Holmstrom are Gay and have even shared a romantic past, but that such rumors are not true. Despite this, McCabe was clear that the band’s loyal and expanding fan base has had healing effects on the individual members’ abilities to create new work and build new relationships. “With each new record, the set lists get better,” she said. “Our live sets are always fun – in general, we are doing a great job keeping it fun and getting along.”

McCabe’s choice of the word “fun” is perhaps a modest description of the band’s newfound global fame. Though relatively unknown outside of the Pacific Northwest throughout the mid 1990s, the band made an indelible mark on the indie rock scene with the release of Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia (2000) and its reigning single “Bohemian Like You.” According to McCabe, herself a Washington state native, the timing was just right. “We were always ready for a post-grunge music movement, and that’s why Seattle has always been hit or miss for us. But we did great in D.C. – the 9:30 Club was totally booked,” she said.

All this success follows the band’s departure from Capitol Records and creation of its own independent label. When I asked McCabe why the band left Capitol, she said quite simply, “It is better to put out your own record, especially considering company demands on artists.”

Despite the end of the band’s honeymoon with Capitol Records, the band continues to appear on the record charts of a number of countries including Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and the U.K. When I wondered aloud what touring outside the U.S. must feel like, McCabe offered, “We love being in Australia, France, and Greece. Mexico seemed otherworldly, and Chile and Argentina were just far out! We have never toured in Asia, not even Japan, but I would love to tour in India. We keep almost playing Istanbul [in Turkey], but we haven’t yet.” She emphasized that despite the band’s success, she and the boys feel humbled and look forward to new musical ventures.

As she waited in line at H&M to pay for her selections, McCabe said there has been “a lot of conversation and banter” about the show in Seattle. She concluded that while expectations are up for the show, “not having expectations onstage – especially good ones – is just a bad attitude.”

Celebrating 37 Years!

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Dancing at Lughnasa Seattle Repertory Theatre Through December 5 Dancing at Lughnasa by Brian Friel is a memory play. Michael (Ben Harris) is grown now, but tells of a hot summer when he was 7 and his mother and four aunts squeezed together into a small Irish hut and welcomed back his uncle from a years-long journey to Africa to minister to the tribes there. Uncle has come back more heathen than Christian and a bit “tetched” in the head. Michael’s father (Troy Fischnaller) shows up when he pleases and leaves again as fluidly as he comes, leaving promises behind.

Through narration, we learn that this summer is the last they will spend together. Life is pretty grim at the time, with little to eat and not much work to be had. But we also hear more about dramatic times than we see them. Not much actually happens on stage.

The title harkens to the Irish dancing that lifts these sisters’ lives up and gives them a bracing dose of good feelings to help them face their bleak existence. In the midst of hardship, still they clear away the kitchen table and ferociously, exuberantly dance.

There is a moment near the beginning that does all that, but it fades into a grace note in the background of the rest of the play.

Director Sheila Daniels assembles a wonderful group of talented actors and evokes the sense-memory of the time with a small serviceable house built into craggy Irish hills, designed by Etta Lilienthal, lighting

by L.B. Morse that helps divide time, and simple costumes by Constanza Romero.

While all those choices are good, somehow the entirety doesn’t pull at the heartstrings the way it appears it should.

Michael is present, though only in his adult form, as the characters talk to the boy and the adult answers. The technique

is distancing. One can’t see a relationship between the boy and the women. It mutes the ability to connect the man to the boy he once was, and his connection to his mother and aunts.

A tenacious and gutsy performance comes from Gretchen Krich as Maggie, the sister who mediates and holds everything together, but also has a streak of untamed wildness in her. Maggie helps ameliorate the harshness of Kate (Mari Nelson), the bossy, rulebound sister who seems to make the most decisions.

There is Christine, the mother (Elizabeth Raetz), who seems content to long for her handsome fella (Troy Fischnaller) but is unable to fight for her right to his permanent attentions. Indeed, we find from narration that Michael’s father has another family, and Michael has a half-brother who contacts him later to say their father has died.

Sister Agnes (Linda K. Morris) knits gloves and takes care of “simple” sister Rose (Cheyenne Casebier), but we know her job as a knitter is going to be usurped by a knitting factory very soon. The small amount of income they have will end.

Rose, played affectingly by Casebier, wants to be in love like her sisters have been, but threatens to hook up with someone who might take advantage of her lack of understanding. We’re never told what becomes of them once they leave this sparse but close-knit environment.

Father Jack (Todd Jefferson Moore) has to mend his addled brain, though what happened to addle it isn’t clear. His joy, though, in the heathen dances and ceremonies of Africa is in stark contrast to the Christian control that they are all supposed to demonstrate in their sober lives. Perhaps the message has to do with celebrating life by letting go and allowing joyous, unfettered, and less-than-Christian ethos smooth over the tough times, rather than suffer in Christian silence.

if the play is going to be similar to Pageant Play, which recently skewered the beauty pageant industry. It looks like it’s going to make fun of the virginity movement, which could be fun. But it doesn’t, and it’s not.

Then we meet two original members of the band Vestal Virgins, who are has-beens from the ‘80s punk rock era. Virgin member Tsarina is wishing for a comeback. Being a single act, rather than a group, doesn’t seem to faze her, nor does it seem to matter that she never displays any new material.

The main reason she seems to want this come back is because they are apparently all out of money and she’s looking for some fast cash.

Tsarina (Marty Mukhalian) lives with Miss Clitty (Karen Jo Fairbrook), an aging drummer who seems incapable of doing anything else, and a boy toy played stereotypically by Ben Burris. Besides waiting for people to show up at the door, no one seems to actually do anything in the house, except have sex and drum. Tsarina’s story does include a history of heroin usage (which she finally kicked) that gives her character a bit of pathos.

Teen virgin Little Nannakin (Samie Detzer) has decided that she wants to sample one of Vestal Virgins’ songs and has manipulated her agent into going after it for her. Matthew Middleton plays what is supposed to be a hard-bitten, experienced music agent, but he looks totally befuddled by Nannakin.

Tsarina doesn’t jump at the chance. Nannakin tries to spy on her with the head of her fan club, a 31-year-old virgin (Terri Weagant), and it turns out that Nannakin really wants to find out if any of the members of Vestal Virgins is her biological mother.

Boy toy’s mother shows up to find him and it turns out that she was a Virgins superfan in her day and loved Tsarina, but was pushed away by heroin-fueled issues.

A reconciliation between fan Olivia (Frances Hearn) and Tsarina is the best moment of the play, where real women with real emotions take time to reconnect. If all the farcical plot issues were stripped and the play were to focus on an aspect of growing up and getting through by showing changes in these two women, it might make for an interesting play.

There are some excellent actors in this production, but their talents are sorely wasted. Director Douglas Staley lets the pace of the first act get sluggish and deflated.

The revelations of who is parent to whom at the end are outlandish and biologically virtually impossible. And it’s really just not funny. The best bet is to let these Virgins stay in the ‘80s, when they were hot.

“The primary target audience was the Queer and questioning midshipmen who don’t know if they’re really Gay or not and can see it’s OK to be Gay because, look, these other people had an OK time, they made it,” Hall told Navy Times. “My number-two audience was parents, to let the parents know, ‘Hey, your kid’s going to be OK.’” Hall said there were several midshipmen present at the Castro Theater in San Francisco, California when the film first screened back in June. “There have been midshipmen at some of the other screenings, too,” he said, “We had about a dozen at the D.C. screening three weeks ago. And we’ve provided half a dozen copies of the film to see with their parents.”

Surprisingly, Hall says that the numberone myth he is trying to break down is that a majority of people don’t identify as being Gay when they start at the Naval Academy.

“Of 180 alumni we interviewed and surveyed, only one out of six identified as being Gay or Lesbian when they entered the academy.”

The average entry age of a midshipman is 18 or 19 years.

“The worst thing that can happen is when they [midshipmen] don’t get to finish the academy because they are identified as Gay – that hasn’t happened in a little while – or they get booted out of the service when they wanted to be there. There’s not a lot of those people,” said Hall. “But the people who do get caught are pretty emotionally damaged.

For example, Robin [Bolster, class of 1984] didn’t even recognize that she was a Lesbian. She just fell in love with someone of the same gender. Her roommate suspected she was too close to this friend and turned her in. And it was pretty devastating for her and her family.”

Still, Hall says that the attitudes towards Gays are changing at the Naval Academy.

“One male professor told me that he asked the question to his class, ‘How many of you have a friend here at the academy who has told you that they’re Gay?’ He said 100% of the class raised their hands. So it seems most of the kids there do have friends that are Gay,” concluded Hall.

for that to be the case.

Not that this means the movie is actually any good. It isn’t – not even remotely. The script is so ancient it could have been written in 1933; elements of 42nd Street, The Broadway Melody, and countless Andy Hardy adventures are recycled throughout.

This isn’t so much a coherent motion picture as it is a series of musical vignettes loosely attached one to the other, all of them held together by gentle banter between old pros Cher and Stanley Tucci doing their best to give it all a reason to exist.

The story is your basic saga of a smalltown Midwestern girl (this time from Iowa) named Ali (Aguilera) who follows her dreams and heads to Los Angeles to become a star. One night, she stumbles into a burlesque club owned by former dancer and diva Tess (Cher) and is immediately intoxicated by the glitz and glamour. She manages

to worm her way inside, first as a hostess, next as a dancer, and finally as a headlining star. But the venue is embattled and on the verge of foreclosure, and the question is whether or not Tess and Ali will be able to pool their talents and come up with the cash to save the club.

Like I said, we’ve seen this one before, and there isn’t a single surprise to be found. Will Ali fall in love with the sexy (and engaged) bar manager Jack (Cam Gigandet), who just so happens to be a struggling songwriter?

Will oily real estate developer Marcus (Eric Dane) get his paws on the club and transform it into a glitzy corporate tower? Will former top girl (and struggling alcoholic) Nikki (Kristen Bell) clean up her act and learn to take second billing? Will Tess ultimately come out on top, saving her club while also buying out her frazzled ex-husband Vince (Peter Gallagher) before he has a nervous breakdown? The answer to all these questions is obvious, and you know them the first moment Ali walks into Tess’ front door.

But just because there are no surprises doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of cheesy cornball fun to be had by watching Burlesque. Aguilera is fairly charming as the star-struck ingénue, while Cher and Tucci (playing the requisite Gay best friend with an answer for everything) could do this sort of thing in their sleep and make it somehow worthwhile. Despite my best efforts to the contrary, I never felt terrible about sitting in my theater seat. Heck, most of the time I was reasonably entertained, going along with the flow even if every fiber of my being told me not to.

It helps that the music is wonderful and that Antin has watched both Cabaret and All That Jazz several hundred times (I would guess) and stages musical numbers that have a bit of pizzazz behind them. While a lot of the film is overly dark and apparently shot through so many filters you’d think they were trying to protect the audience from nicotine, whenever things turn towards the stage, the movie come alive in marvelous ways. It’s silly, brain-dead, and revels in the cliché, but whenever Antin has someone belt out song or do a little dance, those problems tend to evaporate to the point I almost forgot they were even there – almost.

Burlesque isn’t good, and no one should ever confuse it for being so. Its tired and rudimentary narrative can get on a your nerves, and if it wasn’t for the fact the film seems to be reveling in much of its own gloriously harebrained mediocrity, there would probably not be a lot here to talk about. Be all that as it may, I enjoyed myself a heck of a lot more than I should admit. As guilty pleasures go, this is one song many people are going to find difficult to get out of their heads.

But the literary class, which she shares with her brother David, has been good to her, too: I Like You was on the New York Times bestseller’s list for over 12 weeks, and its spin-off is packed with the goofy humor and eye-popping pics that put it there.

Sedaris is over crafting, but that didn’t stop her from talking about it. She told us all about Gay people’s “magic fingertips,” why Queers are great crafters, and what Neil Patrick Harris had to do with the book.

Chris Azzopardi: I love your book, but I bet you hate crafting now.

Amy Sedaris: Oh yeah, I can’t stand it. I hope that’s not why you called! [Laughs.]

Azzopardi: No, we won’t hate on crafting. But we will talk about it. Were any of your Gay friends involved in making crafts for the book?

Sedaris: Uh, let me think about it: Yes! If anything looks good, you’re either a Chinese Lesbian or a homosexual.

Azzopardi: So that’s why the Gays-aregood-crafters statistic in the book is so high.

How did you come up with that number?

Sedaris: Yes! Just made it up – like all

Azzopardi: What do you think makes Gay people good crafters?

Sedaris: I really don’t know. I just think they have good taste. And, my God, they can do anything. Anything! They make everything look better – from people to crafts.

Azzopardi: We need a Queer Eye for the Crafter.

Sedaris: Oh, that’s a good idea!

Azzopardi: Did you and your brother, David, create together as kids?

Sedaris: Well, there are six kids, and we turned the basement into a Santa’s workshop every Christmas and made our own ornaments. We were always working on something.

Azzopardi: I’m guessing there was no “fornicrafting” going on then, though.

Sedaris: No, and I don’t know anything about making love, so [co-author] Paul Dinello completely wrote that chapter on his own. I think I contributed a couple words, but when it came to stuff like that, I was like, “I don’t know anything about making love. You do it – you’re the one with three girlfriends!” [Laughs.]

Azzopardi: Which explains the awkward hilarity of those pics.

Sedaris: Oh, that was the best! We just naturally took our sides: him, enthusiastic and happy and eager to please, and me just being, like, cold. We had so much fun doing that chapter.

Azzopardi: What are the Gayest crafts in the books?

Sedaris: The ones that look the best!

[Laughs.] Seriously, I’m not even joking.

The guy who made my costumes, Adam Selman, he’s a Gay – there you go! – and we met on the Dolly Parton video [for “Better Get to Livin’”], and we hit it off immediately because I just love costumes and props.

So when I met him I asked him if he would work on the book.

Azzopardi: You were so good in that Dolly video.

Sedaris: When they asked me to do it, I was like, “Of course!” And then when they told me I got to work with a monkey, I was like, “Dolly, who?!” Yeah, my dream was to work with a little monkey and the vest that the monkey wore – Adam had made him a little vest – we put that in the book. It’s next to the banana pudding. It’s cute.

Azzopardi: So my pick for Gayest craft in the book is the Crafty Candle Salad [a banana concoction with mayo dripping off it].

Sedaris: Oh yeah! [Laughs.]

Azzopardi: I don’t know if you made that one, but did you think that it was a little, uh, Gay? Sedaris: I made it! And for it to stand up you have to take a little bite off the top of it; just take the tip off – we’ve all heard that before! It’s so funny to watch other people make that because you can’t help but be dirty. I’ll tell you: One thing about the book is we laughed so hard while we were working on it. We shot everything in my apartment and we were just crying from laughing so hard.

Azzopardi: What were some of the funniest projects to work on?

Sedaris: The hot dog on the rake with Adam standing there and the hot dog just batting him in the pants – I mean, Jesus, that was ridiculous! The Crafty Candle Salad was another one we laughed really hard at.

Pretty much everything – all the costumes and dressing up and figuring out all my hair tricks at the last minute. I love doing stuff like that.

Azzopardi: How about the sausage chapter?

Sedaris: Well, I put the sausage chapter after making love because when you turn the page to the last page of making love, you see the top part of the sausage hutch or whatever you want to call it with the batting coming out of it for smoke, and it just looked dirty to me. It looked like a Negro dick.

Azzopardi: What was the process of putting this book together like?

Sedaris: It was a huge undertaking, but with crafts it just takes a long time to make stuff and it’s very expensive. The hard part for me was feeding everybody, getting everybody on board, trying to get them to work faster, and then – to make it easier on myself – I let some people craft elsewhere and then they sent me the crafts.

I have a good friend who lives in Hawaii – a Gay friend who lives in Hawaii! – and he made all the coconut crafts. And I’ll tell you another thing about Gay people: You ask them to do something … and it is done! Professional and delivered – before the deadline. You ask a straight guy and you have to keep calling them and reminding them that they even said they would do it. Todd Oldham did a lot for the book. They just … it’s like they have magic in their fingertips or something.

Azzopardi: I like that. Do you mind if I add that to my résumé?

Sedaris: [Laughs.] Go right ahead!

Azzopardi: I know you’ve collaborated with your brother in the past. Have you discussed working with him in the future on a book?

Sedaris: Book? No. I mean, he has his books and my books are so different – they’re more for people who can’t read. And I have a lot of help; David works completely by himself. But we never say we’re going to do another play together, it just kind of happens. I hope we do another play together, but I don’t know when.

Azzopardi: How was working on this book different than I Like You? Sedaris: It kind of felt like a second child; I knew the deadline situation and I knew what was ahead of me, so I was more open to suggestions. I just wasn’t as controlling; that was the biggest difference. And this book isn’t as personal as I Like You, and I enjoyed stepping back from it a little bit.

Azzopardi: What else do you do well that you could write a book about?

Sedaris: Jesus – that’s a good question.

Well, I’m really good with rabbits, and I think that’s why whatever I do will always have a rabbit chapter, because there’s so much wrong information out there. But I would seriously love to do a rabbit book.

There’s, like, one on the market that’s any good, and that’s it. I’d love to do a series of videos and books on rabbit care. I know that’s a limited audience.

Azzopardi: You have one, right?

Sedaris: I do. Her name’s Dusty and she’s in the book under “Hay Burners.”

Azzopardi: Will we see Jerri Blank again?

Sedaris: You never know. I always say she’s like a rash and you never know when she’s going to reappear. There’s a lot of Jerri in me, and then on the audio book in the rabbit chapter I describe haze as their premium marijuana, so I read that as Jerri Blank on the audiotape.

Azzopardi: You’ve wrapped the upcoming film The Best and the Brightest with Neil Patrick Harris, right?

Sedaris: Yeah! Ah, and speaking of Neil Patrick Harris, my God. Talk about Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay. You know, he does magic, and the chapter “Out of this World” was inspired by him because he did magic tricks when we were working on that film.

So, I was inspired by that and that’s why that chapter’s in the book. I just loved him. There isn’t anything he can’t do. He reminds me a lot of Stephen Colbert; they’re very smart and energetic and they give 100 percent. I just think the world of him.

Azzopardi: All in all, this is a pretty Gay book, isn’t it?

Sedaris: The Crafty Candle Salad, the sausages – I guess it is! And I like the bandana picture with Adam and Paul Dinello in a barn, and how Adam is helping Paul up so that he can reach something, but what he’s trying to reach is at arm’s length; it’s like right there in front of him! That’s a pretty good, you know, Gay picture.

Azzopardi: How do you feel about turning 50 next year?

Sedaris: I don’t know how I’m supposed to feel, but I just know when you’re 50, that’s old – like when you’re little and people tell you they’re 50, or when you’re little and you think, “I can’t wait to see what Barbra Streisand’s going to look like when she’s 50!”

It’s just automatically an old age.

The thing I’m having a hard time with is how I’m supposed to dress, because I always dress like a scarecrow. How would a 50-year-old dress? I still think I can wear print dresses and rickrack – that’s OK. But I just wish I could go from 49 to 73; I don’t really know what to do with the in-between years.
