Celebrating 36 Years!

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer The Fourth Kind Now Playing One either believes there’s a government conspiracy to cover up the appearance of alien craft and that people are seeing things that aren’t weather balloons or high-powered Air Force planes, or one doesn’t. I’m not sure the new Mila Jovovich film The Fourth Kind (in which lovely Mila gives perhaps her most heart-wrenching performance as a psychologist determined to find out what really happened to her husband) will do anything to make non-believers into believers.

The title refers to the kind of alien encounter where not only contact is made (which is the “third kind,” from the Steven Spielberg movie), but where the innocent victim is taken aboard an alien craft and horrible things are done to them. There’s lots of “sciencey” footage that is supposedly based on actual events that happened in Nome, Alaska, in October 2000, and real interviews with patients Dr. Abigail Tyler (played by Jovovich in the film) questioned in her hope to discover what was behind Nome’s high disappearance rate.

Dr. Tyler, in sepia-colored footage, looks like something as horrible as alien probing and egg harvesting (what most people who have supposedly been abducted report) has happened to her. Her eyes remain dead and resigned, a few tears leaking out as she recounts how her reputation is ruined, her

Fourth Kind leaves one questioning the skies children have been taken away, and the town sheriff – a touchy, unhappy man (Will Patton) who just wants people to stop dying on his watch – has charged her with murder.

“I don’t know what’s going on here, but people die when they’re around you,” he spits at her after one of her patients undergoes hypnosis, then blows his whole family and himself away, and another ends up paralyzed from the neck down in the middle of being hypnotized by Dr. Tyler. And though she begs him to be compassionate – after all, they never found her husband’s killer and he was murdered (or something) right beside her – but the sheriff is resolute and decides to take her son away after her daughter goes missing. It doesn’t help that her son sides with the sheriff on this unhappy occasion.

At the beginning and end of the movie are Jovovich and the director (newcomer Olatunde Osunsanmi) saying “you’ll decide for yourself,” but this does nothing but obscure what is presented as factual. Still, as someone who has wondered what’s out there, and has seen things in the sky that couldn’t be explained (and who might have had a reallife encounter, according to my ex, on a deserted Wisconsin road back in the ‘70s), the film does chill and some of the footage is a bit scary, like Jovovich as Tyler screaming under the hypnosis done by her friend, a fellow psychologist whose name is not given (played by Elias Koteas). Her rising off the bed in archival footage and supposedly being “abducted” is pretty creepy, too.

this film might make you salivate a bit. If you’re a skeptic, all The Fourth Kind will do is confirm how improbable alien abduction is, though it still might get you wondering why the aliens always do things in isolated

areas, to people like Tyler and the other folks in this film. If anything, it’s a pretty scary movie and I recommend it for that reason alone, pseudo-science and sketchy footage aside.

Prior to the prequel, the man, Peter (played

by J.D. Lloyd, with button-down precision), had no backstory aside from a mention of a couple of kids and a wife and liking to sit on that bench for many hours during the year.

Homelife is an exchange between Peter and Ann, his wife, (played by Teri Lazzara).

Homelife, on its own, is not Albee’s best piece. It lags a bit in its creation of a longtime marriage that is struggling to remain vital. Ann is vaguely dissatisfied, wanting Peter to “act more like an animal” – but just “sometimes” – along with many protestations of love and “happiness.” Peter is typically clueless, though he eventually confesses to an uneasy feeling about his penis re-growing its foreskin – or his penis shrinking, more likely, due to age. It’s a startling confessional that Albee tries to use to create more intimacy with the couple.

What Homelife does do is make The Zoo Story more vital and make Peter someone you feel much more akin to as he goes to relax and sit on his bench. So, Homelife’s effect is definitely to make The Zoo Story better. The payoff of the second half then becomes even stronger.

Lazzara and Lloyd work at making the first act meaningful, and may yet find something deeper to say with it, given a few more performances. The second act, however, is definitely more interesting when we have more knowledge of Peter as a person, and Lloyd’s understanding of that character helps him respond to Jerry, the street person, more realistically. When Peter refuses to give up the bench, his “ownership” comes from a stronger attachment. Prior to the first act, Jerry’s demand for the bench, and his threatening manner, seems to suggest Peter should just give up and get away. Now, Peter has more reason to stay and make a stand

to keep his territory.

Samuels, as Jerry, makes the second act his own, getting stranger and stranger as the act goes along. It’s passionate poetry describing why a man goes the long way ‘round to get back to where he was heading.

In addition to Albee, Theater Schmeater is also performing An Oak Tree (Mondays through Wednesdays). It is an enigmatic, fascinating experiment that involves an actor playing a hypnotist who has “lost his mojo” acting with another actor who has neither seen nor read the play before. Due to the probability of ruining the experience by explaining it, it’s best just to say, “Go see it!” You may even want to see it more than once, since every new actor who takes the challenge will respond differently. You will likely find it more accessible than most “performance art” pieces, though it’s as experimental as any edgy theater piece you’re likely to see.

Great cast in intriguing Bone Portraits radiation would be as no one had ever identified them before. This theme is amplified by the inclusion of Marie Curie, who experimented with radium and infected herself and her children with over-exposure to radiation. Curie (Borgers again) gets reconnected with her dead husband through a carnival fortune-teller. We can assume that he died from radiation poisoning, as well. The dangers of, and our fascination with, new inventions are displayed in Bone Portraits in a way that subtly exposes both.

Meghan Arnette directs the adept cast.

The set by Grant Laine is versatile and period-establishing, and the most amazing crank-music box is found that exactly compliments the production. Costumes by Michele Hallman are beautifully period, and look sumptuous on what was likely a small budget. Light design by Mike Lindgren displays the new technology of electricity with specificity and elan. Choreography by Mimi Katano is essential to the evening’s success.

Bone Portraits Live Girls! Theater Through November 14 Bone Portraits, the intriguingly named play now running at Live Girls! Theater in Ballard, turns out to be an intriguing play, as well. It’s a combination vaudeville and character-history presentation that uses late 18th-century humor to illuminate the beginnings of our modern technology. Picture Thomas Edison as a county fair barker, claiming to be equal parts inventor and showman. Ray Stanton does a great job as master of ceremonies Edison as he introduces the accidental inventor of the x-ray machine (a sometimes manic and funny Jason Franklin), and a pair of vaudevillians (Franklin and the elegantly silly Shawnmarie Stanton). There is story here, though, with Edison’s assistant, Clarence Dally (Adam Davis) so enamoured of x-rays that he x-rays his hand into getting amputated.

November 19-22 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. They held an uproarious fundraising performance at the Rebar on November 9 to help out with their travel expenses.

Our city’s burlesque artists have become known internationally for their grace, poise, originality, heart, great costumes and wonderful humor, combined with glitz and wacky sexiness. Featured Seattle headliners will be Tamara the Trapeze Lady and Armitage Shanks, member of the former Circus Contraption, who will act as the emcee for the four-day festival. Also performing will be local favorites Inga Ingénue, Fuchsia FoXXX, and Sydni Deveraux. Aerial artist Jenny Penny and burlesque artists Waxie Moon and Polly Wood joined these artists in performance at the benefit.

This great and ambitious-looking festival will also feature established popular artists from England, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Australia, France and Sweden.

Roy Stanton in Bone Portraits

“Bastards! Bastards!” Daniels cried.

“That’s my baby, too. I love my baby!” He gets himself under control, and continued, “I think that people were expecting something different from me after Monster’s Ball and The Woodsman. Precious goes back to that world. But for me, Shadowboxer was a fucking party. I have Dame Vivienne Westwood in to costume my movie in Philadelphia. C’mon! I have Dame Helen Mirren!

As he recalled the film, he stops himself, and admitted, “I think I’m really humbled by the experience of Shadowboxer, because I never got a bad review ever. I grew up.

That [film] made me grow up, and I needed that as a filmmaker. I had no perspective, except from the other two films I produced.”

Daniels more than answers his critics with his new film, Precious, something he wanted to bring to the screen even before he made Monster’s Ball. Recalling the incendiary response the book had upon publication, the filmmaker said, “I stalked Sapphire for 10 years. Her book is a piece of brilliance.

My reaction to it was guttural, absolutely guttural. Why I wanted to do this was to say, ‘Guess what? The hero is a Lesbian!’”

Daniels captures the very essence of the novel on screen. Viewers can smell the bucket of chicken Precious steals in one scene, or the mustiness of the hallways and apartments where the characters eke out their lives. The film features harsh scenes of Precious being raped by her father as well as flights of fancy such as one in which Precious and Mary enact an homage to Two Women. The sequence, shot in black and white, and featuring the actresses speaking Italian, is a highlight.

“That was really funny,” recounted Sidibe, in a separate phone interview. “We had three weeks of Italian training and not once did Mo’Nique say the lines correctly – until the camera rolled. We did two takes, the one in the film, and one for safety.”

Daniels deflected criticism about this scene as well. “Somebody said to me, ‘Why would they be watching Two Women,” and I said, “Because I am watching Two Women, and it’s my movie. You’re in my world!” He calmed down, and adds, “I thought it was so truthful – so in the moment.”

The scene is truthful, and it is important in establishing the universality of these women struggling against oppression. How

And it is not that far removed from Daniels’ experience. He grew up in southwest Philadelphia, where he says there was “zero tolerance” for Gays.

He recalled, “I was beat up, and I went away to a white world that was more tolerant [of homosexuality]. I don’t want to know what I would have become if I’d stayed where I was. In our culture, homosexuality is so bashed, and I think that’s what fucked me up.” Parallels to Precious’ situation are entirely intentional.

In contrast, while Sidibe insisted that she can identify and empathize with her screen persona, she claimed to be nothing like the character she portrays, “I felt like I knew Precious. She was such a real person to me.

What makes her story universal is that she’s been ignored, neglected. I’ve felt that more times than I care to count in my life, but I’ve not been through what she’s been through.

[Lee] reminded me that we’re getting a peek into her life. She can’t be completely sad or pathetic. It’s just a Tuesday for her. It’s a bad day, but they’ve all been bad days.”

The student turned actress used her knowledge from being a psychology major to inform her character. Sidibe has always been interested in what she called, “the anatomy of a victim and victimizer.” In the film, Precious’ body language is very telling, and the actress conveys more with a silent squint than with a whole page of dialogue.

Daniels has nothing but praise for his cast.

He deemed Sidibe’s performance “phenomenal,” and insisted that Mo’Nique is equally revelatory in her role – especially when she gives an astonishing speech at the film’s end.

Daniels has Mo’Nique as Mary sporting Whatever Happened to Baby Jane powder on her face in that scene. He remembered informing her, “Mary’s going out in public, honey. She has to put powder on her face!”

If the actress was initially reluctant, the moment pays off fabulously.

The filmmaker explained his theory why Mo’Nique is able to surprise viewers with her dramatic talents. “Comedians have a third eye – they don’t see the world the way ordinary actors, or people, do. They are able to take a character and really twist the fuck out of them. Jim Carrey does it. Richard Pryor did it in Lady Sings the Blues.”

And yet Daniels, as a Gay man, has the same ability to twist a character or a story and make it relatable. With Precious, he does an extraordinary job – and Daniels will fiercely debate anyone who argues with that. © 2009 Gary M. Kramer

Measure for Pleasure Mercy and Cuteness really enjoyed David Grimm’s play Measure for Pleasure. They are particularly impressed with ArtsWest Theater for bringing another new play. They also like that it is an 18th-century costume romp around a love affair between two Gay men, one of whom is a transvestite. Zach Adair was strong as Will Blount, as was Alex Garnett as Molly Tawdry. The script whipped along, with lots of fun satire. The production values under director Christopher Zinovitch were high. Mercy and Cuteness also liked that ArtsWest offered a paywhat-you-can evening.

The play was used as a way to organize for Referendum 71. Mercy and Cuteness are very happy that Referendum 71 passed.

Unfortunately, there were technical difficulties with the projector, so watchers who had settled into the second theater had to shift into the first one just as the movie was starting. Mercy and Cuteness would have liked it if the movie theater management had explained what was happening to people in the first theater and left the lights on so the second audience could find seats.

Also frustrating were interruptions in the broadcast.

Violeta Urmana was solid-voiced as Aida. Dolora Zajic shone as Amneris. Johan Botha was passionate as Radames. Cuteness wasn’t too impressed with emcee Renée Fleming’s (who Mercy likes to call Peggy Fleming) Nancy Reagan red suit. Mercy likes to remember how her friend Jocosity Libretto, who had sung in the chorus of Aida at Seattle Opera, summarized the choral music: “Kill the wabbit! Kill the wabbit!”

Metropolitan Opera Broadcast of Aida at Pacific Place Cinema Mercy, Cuteness and Deliberation continue to enjoy the HD broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera. Deliberation joked that the movie theater was going to bring in an elephant to celebrate showing Aida. They were excited that Pacific Place now has a second theater so people don’t have to show up as early on a Saturday morning to find seats

Sweet Cruise Mercy and Cuteness enjoyed their first days on the Sweet inaugural Caribbean cruise, including the jambalaya launch.

There did seem to be quite a bit more drinking and noise than they found on their straight Alaska cruise. They were happy to find there were alcohol-free tables at dinner and AA meetings on board.

I am a relatively new Rufus admirer, having my first taste of him from the DVD of his Judy Garland tribute concert, which he debuted at Carnegie Hall in 2006. Re-creating Garland’s legendary 1961 show – song for song, with a full orchestra – was a brazen act of showbiz chutzpah which could easily have turned into an egomaniacal disaster. Instead, it was warmly received as a genuine celebration of a Gay icon by an ardent Queer admirer from a very different generation.

The concert that unfolded in Seattle was a much less glamorous affair – Wainwright accompanied himself on piano and guitar – but his kinetic, flirtatious stage presence supplied enough heat to keep the crowd mesmerized. For this writer, it affirmed his status as an often brilliant, artistically ambitious entertainer. He treated his acolytes to a broad sampling of his catalogue, starting with a yearning-tinged “Grey Gardens,” followed by the haunting “The Maker Makes,” his ballad featured in Brokeback Mountain.

A favorite of mine, “Sanssouci,” was a jolt of ballroom-dance melody.

In live performance, Wainwright’s vocal power and range were startlingly dynamic.

While he seems to strain for the high notes on some recordings, he reached them effortlessly in this concert. His songs are rich in literary and pop culture references (both Pinocchio and Britney Spears are cited in “Vibrate”), but are never dry – always playful. “Zebulon” (from an album-in-progress) and “The Art Teacher” were poignant odes of unrequited schoolboy crushes. The highlight of the evening was a powerful take on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” sung as a duet with Joan Wasser, whose set opened the evening. (You can see/hear it in the Leonard Cohen bio-doc I’m Your Man.) The child of folk music deities Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle, Rufus’ future as a prodigy was assured – and his risky ventures into classic pop and opera (Prima Donna, which makes its North

American debut next year) have branded him a trailblazer whose mischievous, puppy-dog insouciance masks a courageous musical adventurer.

West Hall inside the Old Oddfellows Building on Capitol Hill. West Hall is a perfect fit; complete with a professional lighting and sound system, you are guaranteed topnotch entertainment infused with a glossy aesthetic. The Cherdonna & Lou Show is an evening inspired by celebrities and celebrity impersonators, and combines contemporary dance moves as they lip sync, piano sync, and tap sync their way through the decades in no particular order.

The show is nonstop fun, and you quickly realize that Jody Kuehner (Cherdonna) and Ricki Mason (Lou) are amazing dancers; the choreography is absolutely remarkable, to say the least. Each performer commands their own respect as an individual within the duo – it’s as though they are separate while dancing as a pair. This is largely due to the fact that Mason is much taller than Kuehner, and Kuehner takes on the male role while Mason invokes the female aspect of the performance couple.

“It took us 99 hours in the studio to put the show together,” Kuehner told SGN. “We began the process in August.”

Kuehner and Mason say they’ve worked together on-and-off over the course of the past six years. “We started doing this type of cabaret work a few years ago and got a really great response, so this work has developed organically out of that,” said Kuehner.

One of the most exciting parts of the show is the gender presentation. Each number – all of which are completely different from the songs preceding and following it – takes on the role of gender in a comedic, yet serious fashion. In addition, the audience is never told what to think; Kuehner and Mason simply present a piece and you draw your own conclusion from it. This is particularly evident when the duo is Sonny and Cher,

want to; don’t drink if you don’t want to.”

She also joked about the fact that there is going to be a grief group for those people who mourn not having their cell phones for the week.

Mercy and Cuteness enjoyed the sweet voice of Edie Carey, and are happy to hear she plans a concert in Seattle, December 12. They will pass along details when they have them. One drawback to the attempt to accommodate both loud and quiet partiers was that Edie’s performance was a bit drowned-out by an adjoining deck. Mercy will report on the trip in more detail when she gets back.

They love the twice Grammy-nominated Mose Allison’s unique musical style – a profoundly personal, frequently humor-laced fusion of swing, bop, blues and classical elements.

As a singer, pianist and songwriter, Allison’s influence on others has been wideranging; among those who have been deeply affected by his music are John Mayall, Van Morrison and Randy Newman. His compositions have also been recorded by The Who and Bonnie Raitt, among others.

His most recent Grammy nomination was for Mose Chronicles, Live in London, Vol. I. BBC did a documentary on Mose entitled Mose Allison; Ever Since I Stole the Blues.

singing “I Got You Babe” with Kuehner as Sonny Bono as a puppet. Not only is the musical number funny, but you are left with your own conclusion as to why they chose to make Bono the puppet, when in reality, it was Cher who followed Bono’s lead during the ‘60s and early ‘70s.

Another great performance is the show’s opening number, Abba’s “Xanadu.” The upbeat performance really showcases their dancing talent as well as communicates to the audience that The Cherdonna & Lou Show is not cabaret, nor modern dance, and is instead like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

Both Mason and Kuehner have an impressive resume of dance production and theater. Between the two, there isn’t much they haven’t done. “We put our biggest skills into this character work,” Kuehner told SGN. “We are trying to build on what we are doing and finding new ways to make modern dance and cabaret mesh.”

For Mason, the most exciting aspect of this body of work has been the opportunity to dive into Queer art and answer, at least for himself, what it means to be Queer in the

world of art today.

Audiences have taken notice, and attendance is growing with each performance.

The show’s stars say they got off to a rocky start because audiences didn’t really know what to expect. However, one month into the project, things have changed. “The audiences have been really amazing,” Kuehner said. “We get an immediate response from them. It is clicking with people. The instant laughter when something is funny, or the instant applause when people see something they like, feels really exciting when you are performing.”

The Cherdonna & Lou Show runs until November 20. The entertainment begins at 9 p.m., however general seating begins as early as 8 p.m. Appetizers and beverages are available for purchase as well. mands [more] attention than just about any other work of art you can name. Because we have to follow things like character and story, it’s more demanding than a symphony. In listening to music, it’s OK to have your mind wander.

If you leave, you don’t have to say ‘what happened after the piccolo played that passage?’ In theater, you always have to ask, ‘what happened when I left the room?’

Novels we read in installments, we can reread sections, jump to the ending. Theater is dictatorial, ‘you sit here until I let you get up.’

That expectation is utterly contradictory in nature. Just about everything we do in life gets more boring over time. It’s why God made dessert; because every meal gets a little more boring with each bite we take. In the theater, that’s bad. We have to contrive a way to make people more interested than at the beginning.”

Hollinger’s also a professionally trained violist and has composed songs for bands and the stage. “I have written a few hundred songs for rock bands and musicals, all different collaborations, the book and lyrics, the book and not the lyrics or music, sometimes the book and lyrics and music. I just had a musical premiere in Colorado and I have two in development,” Hollinger told SGN. “I’m kind of opinionated about musicals,” he declares. “I love the form and hate it. Most people are stirred by musicals and what they can do, but thinking people also hate them because they’re dumbed-down and fake and sentimental. Musicals are a challenge in this ironic age that doesn’t want to give the heart away too easily, but song lives in the heart and not the brain. How can you write a new musical that capitalizes on and celebrates the emotional power of music without being stupid and thrills the heart as well as the head? I like that challenge and the form, and love working with others in

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Opus Seattle Repertory Theatre Through December 6 Seattle Repertory Theatre just opened its newest production, Opus, an intense oneact play about a string quartet going through major changes and triumphs. The play stars five well-known Seattle actors: Shawn Belyea, Allen Fitzpatrick, Charles Leggett (recently awarded the 2009 Gregory Falls Outstanding Actor award), Todd Jefferson Moore, and Chelsey Rives. In the play, a famous all-male string quartet has ousted one of its long-time members and a woman is hired just before they play at the White House, and she has to get up to speed in a real hurry.

The playwright, Michael Hollinger, is a theater professor at Villanova University.

He talked about the kinds of demands theater places on its audience. “Theater de-

intimate creative circumstances. A musical is like an aircraft carrier; it’s huge and hard to change things quickly. The one that premiered this summer was 11 years in the making. With a play, I can change something in seconds. I can kill off a character, change my mind, it can be more idiosyncratic that way. It’s more a map of my psyche than a collective psyche.”

Hollinger thinks, as many do, that the best pieces of writing combine humor and drama. “I like highbrow as well as lowbrow humor, I like wit as well as people falling down. I like the mix of it. I like humor that is used to soften up the belly of an audience so they’ll feel things. You won’t get an audience to cry if you don’t get them to laugh first. There are about six laughs in Death of a Salesman, and you can’t lose any of them.

An example in Opus: Carl acknowledges in the White House backstage that he has cancer and he doesn’t know how he’s going to tell his kids. This is preceded by some decent laughs. When the audience is feeling a little jolly, it hits them harder when it gets a little grim. After that moment, there’s another moment of humor and it’s a release for the audience because they know he’s not down and out yet. It’s the combination because we’re yanked around. The best roller coasters don’t go just up and down; they vary our experience.”

Hollinger teaches graduate playwriting and graduate “solo performance” and undergraduate songwriting. “[I try] to get students to understand the nature of attention: how do we get it, hold it, and intensify it over time?

How is setting used, how is costume used, what is dialogue beside the way that people talk in real life, what is a title and what does it do? I try to focus on taking a play apart so we can see it as individual parts and not get blurry about it. In shipbuilding, you’d have a lesson on water displacement, on masts, cover these things separately, even if your goal is to make a ship that floats. I try to be that specific. It’s easy to talk too generally about the construction of plays.”

One of the main stories in Opus is that two of the male players have been a couple for a long time. Asked about his exposure to Gay relationships, Hollinger says, “When I worked on this play, it didn’t cross my mind at all. The thing that interested me was to have an established quartet that gets a new member. A couple was good, and the new member would be as different as possible.

takovich tests his audience. These probing, painful excursions into a kind of madness (or is it bliss?) require a willingness to give the composer plenty of time. One can’t be in a hurry here, and Schwarz gave it everything it needed to sustain the flight over these depths.

Much of this great work can be read in polar-opposite ways. Russian composers at this time (1971) were under frightening pressures from the Kremlin, in part to write uplifting music. Shostakovich seems to use brilliant irony to have it both ways. Many of us see the dark side winning here; terror and despair dance with ironic playfulness until the jaunty percussion literally unwinds in a fizzled-out ending.

This symphony seemed at times like a concerto for orchestra, giving many section leaders a chance to shine. Eric Gaenslen, currently the guest principal cellist, first trombone Ko-ichiro Yamamoto, and timpanist Michael Crusoe were standouts, as were Ben Hausmann (oboe) and Scott Goff (flute). But so were Seth Krimsky (bassoon), and most especially concertmistress Maria Larionoff, whose important solos were perfection. Gerard Schwarz wove all these into a seamless fabric, sustaining the slow arcs and bringing lightness, brilliance and wit to the brighter moments of temporary relief in this final symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich.

Leonidas Kavakos with the Seattle Symphony November 7 Benaroya Hall This concert began with some light sorbet, warmed up to some very hot soup, and ended with a full, meat-and-potatoes meal.

Indeed, the opening “Symphony No. 3” by Alexander Borodin (a chemist by profession) carried no emotional content whatsoever. Its folk-like melodies were charming, and the orchestration was sufficiently interesting to please nearly everyone. Borodin, whose second symphony is much more often played, died before completing the work, leaving Glazunov to finish the second movement from sketches. Schwarz and orchestra gave it a lovely reading, full of life and nuance.

The hot stuff came in the form of violinist Leonidas Kavakos, who played the Tchaikovsky violin concerto. I can safely say that I have never heard it better. His tone had a searing intensity that made Benaroya Hall resound, even when the notes were very soft. (Not since a young violinist from Siberia, Maxim Vengerov, played four of the six

Ysaye sonatas here have I heard this kind of sound!) Of course, the instrument Kavakos played was partly responsible (he plays both a “Strad” and a violin by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini), but it is the musician and his ability to project that carries the sound forward to the audience. In this, he could not be excelled.

But more impressive than his incredible sound was the artistry with which he brought this warhorse alive. Even though there was nothing overtly strange about his attacks, it seemed nonetheless as though he were pausing before many of the phrases, thinking it over, before he began. Every line was fresh and vivid. Again, it was amazing to hear how he could make even the softest sounds heard clearly. And the loud passages were white hot! The virtuosic turns were sent flying through the hall like sparks. He truly deserved the standing ovation he got.

While the Tchaikovsky is full of passion, it is lightweight compared to the “Symphony No. 15” of Dmitri Shostakovich. His last symphony, written in 1971, is a fantastic mixture of playful and mournful moments, as perfectly reflected in the direct quotes from the gallop in the “William Tell” overture and, later, from one of the death themes

in the arts. The evolution was to further the romantic relationship and to make Grace as alien as possible, so that meant that they [the original quartet] should all be male.

Still, once characters start developing they take on a life of their own, they say things you don’t expect them to say. Example: the flashback scene when Dorian opens the door holding a plunger. I had no idea why he was holding a plunger. I figured I’d find out what he was doing with it and I did. I found out he had flushed his [psychotropic] meds down the toilet, in the bottle.”

“I wanted them to be a Gay couple. I ran it past some friends, a composer who I’m writing a musical with has been with his partner for about as long as my wife and I have been together, 19 years. It was great to get his feedback. One of the things that was clear: it was important to see their relationship before it was in breakdown. That probably came out of conversations with my friend.”

“The play is more about how people work together to create something greater than the sum of their parts. Every small group, a university department faculty or small touring theater ensemble or string quartet or rock band is going to run into the same kinds of ditches. I’ve been in all of those groups.

There are universals. It’s just the way human beings organize themselves. We figure out who we are and what our niche is based on who we’re with.”

Hollinger wanted the characters to sound a little like their instruments. “There is certainly a kind of anal-ness to Elliott drawn upon the temperament of a first violinist, a touch of a diva characteristic – not to be stereotypical, but a first violinist probably has to practice more than anyone else; the part is more forward and more prominent than the others in a quartet. The Guarneri Quartet – together about 45 years – was founded with three first class violinists and they had to figure out who was going to be first violin, second violin, and who was going to be violist and do it in a way that no one was going to be gypped. Even in that famously healthy quartet, there were tensions about swapping off every now and then so the violist could play first violin.”

Hollinger was present for opening night at the Seattle Rep and had praise for the play.

“I enjoyed the production so much. It’s a theater that I wanted to play with for some time. My sweat was put in years ago, and it’s nice to meet collaborators even if the work is done years apart. from Wagner’s RING. Shostakovich is an acquired taste, and those of us who have acquired it know that Schwarz can be counted on for absolutely first-rate performances. This was no exception. All the playful, ironic wit of the first movement was perfectly balanced with the truly grand darkness of the despairing looks at mortality that came later. The Seattle Symphony trombones and tuba made death utterly attractive with the unsurpassed warmth of their glorious sounds. I could have died all night in their embrace!

And to anyone truly listening, the sounds we heard could not fail to fascinate and perhaps entrance. continued from cover

Jiri Kylian of the Nederlands Das Theatre, is full of visual gimmicks and dance surprises.

Six corseted men walk backwards toward the audience as the lights go up. They balance fencing foils horizontally on their fingertips as the music from two of Mozart’s most famous piano concertos fills McCaw Hall’s auditorium. Six corseted women appear at the back of the stage. The men, the foils, the women interact – sometimes with tongue-in-cheek pairings, sometimes in all seriousness.

The women disappear at one point, only to return wearing what seem like stiff, hoopskirted elaborate strapless ball gowns, all in black. It turns out the laugh is on us, and the audience cheers as the women step aside from the dresses and we find that the dresses are really free-standing (and, mysteriously, free-moving) sculptures of ball gowns. The music is sublime, and the dancing, as usual for PNB, is outstanding. The choreography raises a lot of questions – of the “what’s it all about, Alfie?” variety. No matter; the majority of the audience loved the visual punning and the incredible skill of the PNB dancers.

A new-to-PNB choreographer, Mozart, a classical ballet feeling, humorous variations – in short, a great new work that season subscribers will undoubtedly love seeing again next year.

Mopey, a short 2004 work by Marco Goecke that Boal commissioned for his then-New York company, was next on the program. First seen at PNB in 2005, the onecharacter dance is a showcase for PNB’s James Moore, who plays a young man, perhaps a teenager, who literally mopes around.

The music is a strange blending of classical by Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach and The Cramps. Much of the dance is street inspired and much of it is presented with Moore’s back to the audience. Audiences loved it – or hated it – in 2005. It seems tamer now, perhaps because the novelty is gone for returning patrons. Still, it’s the most controversial work in Boal’s choices.

The world premiere of Val Caniparoli’s The Seasons followed after the first intermission. The Renton native, with five works now in PNB’s repertoire, seems to be a favorite with local and national audiences (and critics). The new work is actually an inspired recreation of a now-lost work from

1900 by the Imperial Ballet, St. Petersburg, Russia.

From that lost work, we have only the music (now well-known as a concert piece)

by Alexander Glazunov, the original program with the names of the characters, and a handful of photographs.

The new work, commissioned by PNB and Louisville Ballet, follows the same structure as the Russian original. We begin with winter, with snowflakes dancing (and falling from the flies above the stage). We have dancing ice, snow, hail and frost, plus Zephyr, who is one of the few continuing characters. The extended winter sequence is followed, of course, by spring, with swallows and dancing roses. The “seasons” design on the background changes from the white of winter to the green of spring. Ditto the costume colors. Then comes summer, a strange mixture of white (again) and pink.

Fall arrives as a splash of red with autumn leaves in the headdresses of the corps. “A glorious autumn bacchanale” is how the scene is described in the program.

An extended “Apotheosis” provided the fifth sequence (and sent many in the audience running for Mr. Webster’s dictionary when they got home). The work – delightful in many ways on first viewing – is lengthy, with complex dancing. It cries out for a second viewing, which, as is traditional with PNB, might come as early as next year.

After another intermission, West Side Story Suite ended the evening. Drawn from the Broadway musical by its original choreographer Jerome Robbins in 1995 for New York City Ballet, the work premiered just last spring at PNB. Most of the audience was delighted with the suite’s quick return (although the older couple next to Bits&Bytes left at the second intermission with a cryptic, “We saw it just last year” comment).

The seven-section work combines onstage singing, off-stage singing (which, to be honest, is a bit of a confusing distraction) with brilliant PNB dancing. It’s an audiencepleaser if there ever was one.

Special mention must be made of conductor Allan Dameron, who not only conducted all four musical works, but also served as pianist in the opening two Mozart excerpts.

Dameron is acting music director after the sudden resignation of Stewart Kershaw, an invaluable asset to PNB who retired without any fanfare in early October after his 25th anniversary with the company, leaving happily with the ovations from Prokofiev’s Roméo et Juliette as his swan song.

refreshing, once one let go of later Western musical rules and expectations. This early polyphony had much to say to the 21st century ear.

The more familiar sounds of the second half, entitled “Re-imagining Ancient Music,” came almost as a let-down after the adventures of the opening series. While chromaticisms were often employed, the ancient scales were less used, and harmonies and styles of polyphony became more regimented. As performed by Cappella Romana, it was all lovely and beautiful, but less exciting.

Almost none of the composers in this program were familiar to me, except the late, great Anonymous! (Matthew Blastares, Guillaume Dufay, Manuel Gazes the Lampadarios, Franghiskos Leontaritis, Antoine Busnoys, Claude le Jeune, and Nicola Vicentino greatly outnumbered the sole familiar name of Orlande de Lassus.) I noticed only one other regular Seattle reviewer in the audience. Perhaps most main-line reviewers feel that their professionalism doesn’t allow them to review music with which they are not familiar. But a superb group like Cappella Romana deserves more notice than they get. I, for one, found no difficulty in appreciating, however superficially, the excellence of their singing and the joy of discovery in their scholarly yet exciting program.

Cappella Roman has released 13 CDs. They are taking this program to Princeton, Washington, DC, Yale, and New York, as well as their hometown of Portland, OR. A very intelligent design divided the evening into two very different parts. The first half, entitled “Greeks and Latins in the Eastern Mediterranean,” might just as well have been called “Conflict!” There was conflict between cults, cultures, and musical rules.

Essentially, the Crusades left the Eastern Mediterranean in a mess. East Roman (Byzantine) Empire, Western colonies, and Islamic states (both Arab and Turkish) gradually sorted things out in a way that remains,

to this day, full of conflict.

To these ears, the music of the first half mirrored those conflicts both in the startling variety of styles and in the way each probed the possibilities of just how a musical scale should sound. “Well-tempered” tuning had not yet conquered the field. We heard all sorts of notes that, to a later Western ear, were just plain “wrong!” Micro-tones and harmonies that seemed bizarre kept jolting me out my musical comfort zone, thus grabbing my attention and keeping my ears alert. The absolute accuracy of the singers (and the excellent acoustics at St. Demetrios) made these weird sounds perfectly clear and a source of delight. I found that closing my eyes also helped me surrender my habitual expectations and instead actually listen without censoring.

This was vocal music, set to mostly sacred texts. Obviously, I ignored the texts. Paradoxically, I was wowed by the expression of the vocal lines. The “strange” notes often came from vocal inflections preceding notes, or elaborating notes with slight dips in pitch.

These gave the lines an almost speaking (“sprechstimme”) quality. (Sprechstimme wasn’t used as a technique until the turn of the 20th century!)

Throughout the evening, the group of 10 singers (eight men and two women) changed their physical arrangement as well as the number of people singing, thus adding more variety in textures and dynamics. The quality of singing could hardly have been more impressive.

The first piece, from the Cypriot 15th century, had the bass line move slowly in almost a drone while the higher voices chimed in, as though from another world, with rather bird-like short phrases that were full of movement and inflection. It sounded at first rather chaotic but became rather freeing and
