On May 23, five contestants – singing two songs each – competed for the chance to become Seattle’s next Seattle Out and Proud (SOaP) 2010 Pride Idol.

Idol fans, did you notice anything different at last week’s competition? That’s right – it was “guest judge” week, as the mostly unimpressed Andrew Miller, the always funny and glitter-drenched Sister Domine Trix, and Gay media man (me!) Shaun Knittel got the week off and openly Gay NFL athlete David Kopay, Sister Stella Standing, Cornish College composer and conductor and musical director of the Esoterics Eric Banks, and 20-year music veteran Robert O’Toole got the say in who would move on to compete in the Wild Card and Pride Idol Finals round.

Kicking off the show with a bang and a few cute boys (Steven and Dustin) was drag sensation Xandria Cocks. Although I wasn’t there to see the performance, a little Gay birdie told me that Miss Cocks’ performance of the new Christina Aguilera song was a hit with

The quiet beauty of The Trip to Bountiful

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer The Trip to Bountiful ACT Theatre Through June 6 These days, ACT Theatre’s The Trip to Bountiful by Horton Foote is better known as a 1985 movie than as a stage play. Set in southeast Texas in 1953, it’s the quiet, plaintive story of Carrie Watts, a woman who just wants to go back and stand on the land she grew up on in Bountiful, Texas. Her son and daughter-in-law feel that there’s no use in going back to a place no one lives anymore, and think she’s childishly making too much of a fuss over it.

A lovely cast, headed by the luminous Marianne Owen, presents the play with tenacity and great pace. Director Victor Pappas creates a subtle momentum that slowly builds to the climax, and is so steady that one doesn’t realize that

For a play not generally thought of as appropriate for in-the-round presentation, always-inventive set designer Matthew Smucker designs a fabulous wood-plank floor, standing in for a home, a bus station, and even growing dry grasses for an outdoor scene in Bountiful. One tiny disappointment was the window at the beginning of the play disappearing, never to be used again. Costumes by Frances Kenny are muted but beautiful, and lighting designer Christopher Walker creates crucial moods and times of day. An ingenious bench set on a rotating disk takes care of the long conversation on the bus, giving everyone an equal chance at the faces.

This is a quiet beauty, and though a melancholy reflection on what constitutes a life well-lived, it’s a gift of forethought for those who have opportunities they aren’t taking, which might help us avoid a life of regret. It is essentially a three-person play, with Owen playing Carrie, Paul Morgan Stetler playing her son Ludie, and Mary Kae Irvin playing the caustic daughter-inlaw Jessie Mae. Small – but important – roles are covered by Ian Bell, Wesley Rice, a sympathetic Charles Leggett, and a wideeyed, sweet-as-sugar Jessica Martin.

Carrie has been living with her son and daughter-in-law in Houston for more than the 15 years of their marriage. She made the decision to move to Houston with Ludie so he could make the most of a life for himself, not on a failing farm in Bountiful. Farms were being abandoned, sold to the highest bidder, and family farmers were disappearing. But now, captive in their home, doing nothing but cooking and cleaning and staring out the window, Carrie feels like her life is a failure and she wants to go home.

What she could do back on the farm is not clear, and her dream doesn’t seem reasonable, though the disdain and condescension heaped on her by Jessie Mae seems completely unwarranted. We learn at the beginning that she’s run away to try to return to Bountiful before, though she’s promised never to worry her son again by doing so.

Celebrating 37 Years!

by Milton W. Hamlin SGN A&E Writer Charley’s Aunt Taproot Theatre Through June 12 In 1892 Victorian London, the biggest comedy smash of the year was Brandon Thomas’ Charley’s Aunt. In 2010 Seattle, the biggest comedy smash currently on stage might well be the same play. The original production ran an incredible 1,466 performances. Taproot’s polished production continues just through June 12. That makes it a “must” on local theater fans’ calendars.

The 112-year-old farce works like a Swiss watch: wind it up and watch it go. Karen Lund, Taproot’s associate artistic director, gives the Victorian antique a quick polish and basically stays out of the way of the show’s driving force – a comic explosion that just keep building.

This scribe thought it would be easy to keep track of the laughs. A column for “belly laughs,” an entry for “chuckles,” a line for “smiles.” This comedy graph collapsed shortly after Act One, which is basically exposition for the laugh riot that follows.

There were simply too many laugh-out-loud moments, too many “big smile” reactions.

The plot is pure and simple farce. Two Victorian students at Oxford hope to propose to their sweethearts before graduation.

They invite Kitty and Amy to lunch in Jack’s college apartments. But, being Victorian England, they need a chaperone. Fortunately, Charley’s long-lost aunt is arriving as a new widow from Brazil, where she went to work as a young woman. She took a job as a secretary to an older Brazilian millionaire, fell in love with him, and married him. Now

a wealthy widow, she is returning to London and plans to meet Charley at long last.

A perfect chaperone, the two young men agree, and the luncheon invitation “to meet Charley’s aunt” is extended.

Babbs, a good friend, is officially Lord Fancourt Babberly. He stops by to show off the costume he will wear in an upcoming college theatrical – he will play an old woman, a take off on Queen Victoria. A telegram arrives saying that Charley’s real aunt is delayed and will not be there until a day later. “Horrors – no chaperone!” Jack and Charley then think of a brilliant solution: Babbs will don the frumpy costume and wig and impersonate Charley’s aunt. And, with a lot of protestations, Babbs becomes “Charley’s aunt, from Brazil. Where the nuts come from.” And, faster than you can say La Cage or The Birdcage, which milked the same impersonation plot – “a cock in a frock,” as some say – the fun begins.

When the real aunt, a regal Donna Lucia D’Alvadorez, does arrive in time for lunch, she finds an old frump holding court.

She decides to play along with the gag and passes herself off a “Mrs. Beverley Smyth” using a calling card in her handbag. Babbs loves to have the young ladies snuggle with him and exchange kisses and hugs, all in a thoroughly proper manner, as older aunt and sweet young things. When he is caught sneaking a cigar in Act Three, he has a hilarious explanation: women in Brazil (yes, “Where the nuts come from....”) smoke cigars all the time.

Taproot has assembled a strong cast of veterans and young actors. On opening night, the older actors took the honors, but there is no doubt that the younger cast members will find the polish necessary in a week or

so. The entire cast is strong and, as usual at Taproot, an ensemble feeling dominated the production. For the record: Nolan Palmer, as Mr. Spettigue, the stuffed-shirt guardian of both Amy and Kitty, was splendid. Andrew Litzky, playing older than his off-stage age, was equally fine as Jack’s recently widowed father who turns out to be an old flame of the real Donna Lucia. Llysa Holland is stately and elegant as the real Donna Lucia. She and Litzky are married off stage, and his program biography charmingly notes that he is “deliriously pleased” to fall in love with his real wife in the course of the play. Don Brady is an underplayed delight as Brassett, Jack’s manservant. Brady shows how much can be done by doing little.

As the young characters: Steve West makes a charming Taproot debut as the zany Babbs and his forced alter ego, Charley’s aunt. His zany characterization is still in the molding period, but he is delightful in every scene.

Josh Smyth, also making his Taproot debut, is solid as Charley, and Eric Reidmann is equally fine as his college buddy, Jack. The

two young Victorian women, Anne Kennedy as Kitty and Emily Fairbrook (another Taproot debut) as Amy, are especially strong.

Samie Detzer is equally delightful as a third Victorian lass, the seemingly penniless Ela who Babbs fell in love with on an earlier trip to Europe, only to lose her when her father died. Her return to his life, as Donna Lucia’s traveling companion, results in fine farce as Babbs tries to court her while disguised as Charley’s aunt.

As usual, production values are solid for Taproot. A handsome set by Mark Lund switches easily from Jack’s Oxford rooms to Mr. Spettigue’s elegant home. Sarah Burch Gordon’s costumes are a period delight, especially the elegant gowns for the real Donna Lucia and the frump festival for the sham aunt. Other tech work is solid. As Taproot’s press releases notes, “mischief, high jinks, and shenanigans” rule.

Charley’s Aunt continues Wednesday through Saturday evening performances plus Saturday matinees through June 12. Ticket information is available at (206) 781-9707.

believing in it more fervently and sometimes seeing incongruities. The personalities who speak through him include a young Muslim-American teenage girl, a man from Vietnam, a white man from South Africa, a Jewish woman who survived the shootout at the Jewish Federation a few years ago, and his uncle, the atheist – 11 people in all.

The 75-minute production is beautifully appointed, with a striking see-through set of walls and a large ramp leading to a landing of dirt and rocks, designed by Etta Lilienthal. Lighting by Ben Zamora ranges from intense to shadowy to carved-out rectangular spots on the floor as the Vietnamese man speaks about spending 18 months in a box with no light. Sound designer Matt Starritt weaves in moody and beautiful orchestral arrangements to change scenes or span time.

The one actor, Gbenga Akinnagbe, is a powerful, arresting actor who commands attention throughout. He makes many good transitions to different characters, but has yet to find concrete ways of consis-

tently portraying the females. Character changing in one-person presentations is a unique art, and one that he may gain strength in over the production, but there are times when movements that are more “Akinnagbe” than the specific character jar one out of his presentation. He is most successful as the men.

The script has beautiful passages and is a thoughtful exploration of religion and spirituality in many forms. The “thin place” is described as a place where humans and God come together to intersect, and is named a Buddhist concept. The subject is treated gently, so there is no affront or attack on any aspect. Each person is allowed his or her voice without judgment.

Overall, there is a lot to appreciate about the effort and a lot to like about experiencing Akinnagbe as an actor. It’s an attempt to plunge more deeply into a subject that means something to everyone, one way or another, and can get you thinking and talking and maybe even understanding more than you did. The Thin Place Intiman Theatre Through June 13 The world-premiere play The Thin Place just opened at Intiman Theatre. It was written by local playwright Sonya Schneider and conceived and directed by Andrew Russell, the new associate producer at Intiman. Schneider drew from interviews done by KUOW radio personality Marcie Sillman, who spoke to people about their connection to faith. She was commissioned in 2009 to do this interview series for a play.

Sillman spoke to many people from almost every religious and spiritual aspect you can think of, including an atheist.

These conversations were built into an evening around a young man who struggles with his own belief system while

matching it to his family and voices in his head, which turn out to be the panoply of people who were interviewed. It is a reasonable choice for Schneider and Russell to weave these disparate stories together.

This young man’s journey continues through the trial of faith he has when his mother gets sick and then dies. This triggers him to try to believe for himself, rather than take the words of others. He reads and rereads the Bible, sometimes

Bass player Bob Stroger opened by singing a song he had played with Jimmy Reeves, “White Lights, Big City,” with his nice, big voice. “CC Rider” and “I’ve Got the Keys to the Highway” had nice turns by guitarist Little Frank Krakowski.

Willie “Big Eyes” Smith came to the stage with a big smile of appreciation toward the guitarist. He knocked Mercy and Cuteness’ socks off singing and playing harmonica on his song “I’d Rather Be With an Old Woman,” which he had written 30 years ago. He also nailed “I Was Born in Arkansas,” “I Just Want to Be Your Lover Man,” and “You Talking About Your Woman, I Wish You

Could See Mine.”

Pinetop Perkins was led to the piano, with his gray hair and lanky body. His fingers smoked on “Chicken Delight,” “How Long Baby,” and “Down in Mississippi,” inspiring the harmonica, bass, guitar, and Kenny Smith on drums to rock out with him. His voice rang out for “The Ladies Call Me Pinetop Perkins.” Willie Smith, with his luscious voice, joined him on “I Got My Mojo Working, But it Just Won’t Work on You.” Mercy could see why their new CD is going to be called Joined at the Hip. Willie Smith joked, “Buy one of our CDs and give it to someone you don’t like.” Perkins left the stage, and Smith and the rest of the band played delightful encores of “I Know My Baby” and “The Hoo Doo Man.” Cuteness said, “He’s pretty spry for an old man. It’s amazing he still tours.”

Follies Mercy and Cuteness are very much looking forward to seeing the Showtunes concert version of Sondheim’s Follies, at The Moore Theatre in Seattle on June 5 and 6.

“Follies remains one of the sure-fire argument starters in the musical theater,” read the original recording’s liner notes. “The show smudges the lines between reality and theater … challenging an audience to abandon its illusions, not just about the theater, but life itself.”

Newsweek said, “It’s a brilliant show, wonderfully entertaining, extraordinarily intelligent with a stunning direct appeal. …

Sondheim must be credited with as brilliant a burst of creativity as American theater has seen in a long time.”

Filled with favorites like “Broadway Baby,” “Losing My Mind,” and “I’m Still Here,” musical comedy doesn’t get any better, and as cults go, this isn’t a bad one to join. We’ve all had the experience of leaving a performance of a play so powerful that we can’t quite adjust once it ends.

Memories of Lenny Mercy wants you to know you can hear Memories of Lenny by Martin Charnin free in the Paramount Theatre lobby, Monday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m.

This free event includes Martin Charnin’s (one of the original West Side Story Jets) personal reminiscences of Leonard Bernstein, and features a never-before heard reading of a 1987 conversation recorded at the Drama-

along her gal-pal posse. While their adventures in the sand dunes (captured beautifully by cinematographer John Thomas) are sometimes amusing, the film gets derailed in this hour-long sequence in the desert.

Nowhere to be found is the delicate balance of sexual wit and poignancy which put the television series in a category all its own – a jewel in the bleak wasteland of television programming. The movie never recovers from its Middle Eastern journey. In turning SATC2 into a global adventure, writer/director Michael Patrick King seems to have lost his light touch. Samantha’s comic take on menopause is funny the first time around, but after an umpteenth slapstick reference to hot flashes, we begin to lose our sense of humor. This is an especially egregious waste of the exquisite comic talents of Kim Cattrall.

The film’s satirical attempts to shed feminist light on Muslim culture fall flat.

When Sex and the City debuted on HBO in 1998, it became a pop culture touchstone, a cultural clarion call to 30-something urban women. Its depiction of feminine empowerment spoke for itself in unapologetic portraits of four women whose approaches to relationships were intriguingly different from each other: Carrie’s hopeful/cynical romanticism, Samantha’s fearless sexual escapades, Charlotte’s prim, eternally optimistic schoolmarm, and Miranda’s aggressive-but-vulnerable attorney. In SATC2, Mr. King is not content to let our heroines’ actions speak for themselves. Instead, there are far too many wince-inducing moments meant to underscore their devotion to each other: Samantha referring to her friends as “soulmates” (as if she had been watching too many Oprah reruns); our ladies performing a karaoke version of “I Am Woman.” It’s great fun to follow our heroines into their 40s and 50s – but why allow their feminism to become condescendingly stale when our heroines are still vital? The film regains its footing again when Samantha and company get back to New York – but for the audience, it’s too little, too late.

Amidst all the fabulous clothes and jewelry (and they are fabulous), there is one golden moment in SATC2 in which Charlotte and Miranda, endearingly played by Kristin Davis and the estimable Cynthia Nixon, make a comic commiseration about motherhood (over cocktails, natch). Their affection for and identification with each other are heartfelt and funny. Since there will likely be a SATC3, let’s hope that Mr. King and company remember that it is these small moments which endear us to our tales of the city. Martin Charnin, who has been involved in the creation of over 125 plays and musicals, is best known for creating, directing and writing the lyrics to Annie. He began his theatrical career as an actor in the original company of West Side Story.

The West Side Story experience had a profound and lasting influence on Mr. Charnin.

He will reminisce about those indelible moments with Robbins, Laurents, Sondheim, and particularly Leonard Bernstein, recalling those early rehearsal days, and his 1,000-performance tenure as a Jet. No Bernstein memories can be called to mind without some actual singing, and Charnin will have his wife, the Broadway star Shelly Burch, performing several songs from West Side Story. There is a rumor that Charnin himself will try to remember “Gee Officer Krupke” and croak out a note or two.

Recreating the 1987 conversation will be Charnin, Mark Rabe, David Koch, and Victor Pappas. Maggie Stenson Pehrson, Showtunes’ executive director, will serve as moderator of this unique segment.

A question and answer period will follow this 60-minute event, where Mr. Charnin will reveal as much as he can – except his age. Be there! There will never be a West Side Story experience like this again!

Every Day Rating: Very Good Family Drama May 29, 11 a.m., Neptune, June 11, 7 p.m., Kirkland A middle-aged screenwriter with a zany Gay boss and a Gay son struggles in midlife when his wife brings her ailing, alcoholic, wheelchair-bound father whom she dislikes home to live with the family. He struggles to come to terms with his uncomfortable feelings around his teenaged son’s budding sexuality, and must deal with the erratic demands of his boss, who orders him to team up with a sexy co-worker to improve his scripts so they are more shocking.

Meanwhile, his wife is struggling to come to grips with her father’s presence.

What this film really is about is the importance of family, and how vital these relationships really are when it comes to the bigger picture of life, love, and the passage of time. In the end, it is just a slice-of-life kind of film that conveys a poignant realistic message about familial bonds. Using humor, compassion, and social situations, this is a solid drama that is well-made, worthwhile, and realistic.

Paris Return Rating: Below Average Documentary France/Israel – Subtitled June 11, 7 p.m.

June 13, 1:30 p.m., Harvard Exit This documentary profiles an aging longtime Gay couple who resides in Paris, France. The younger partner, Pierluigi, originally hailed from Italy, and the older partner, Revuen, has a desire to move back to his childhood homeland of Israel, where his brother resides. They have begun to try to sell some of their belongings and have started planning, however they seem to be struggling with this and have not completely decided to move. An upcoming visit to Israel will help them decide. The filmmakers follow the two around at length, so most of the film is interview footage of them in Paris as they wax nostalgic over the convergence of their lives many years before in this city. It quickly becomes apparent that they both love their adopted hometown as they struggle with their future.

While an interesting documentary profile about an aging Gay couple, it really is not absorbing or particularly interesting in its length of 71 minutes. With considerable editing, it would be an interesting topic for a significantly shorter film. d iv a

From Beginning to End Rating: Outstanding Social Drama Brazil – Subtitles June 2, 4:30 p.m., Egyptian This extremely controversial film by Brazilian director Aluizio dives headfirst into one of the original great social taboos: incest. The film tells the story of two very indulged half-brothers of a wealthy Rio de Janeiro couple. The two young boys are inseparable and very affectionate towards each other. Although the parents are concerned about their closeness, worrying that as they mature things may go in the wrong direction, they are unwilling to intervene and convey any message to their boys that would cause guilt or shame or prevent them from being close to each other as brothers.

Once they mature into young men, the film launches into graphic depictions of their incestuous relationship with one another, and the recognition and acceptance of this by their one remaining parent as well as others within their social circle. The film clearly demonstrates their affection towards each other as adorable pre-pubescent brothers, which causes adults to notice that it is unusual in their formative years.

This film benefits from very high production values and makes good use of on-location sites in Brazil and Argentina. Yet what makes this unusual film so remarkable is the way the filmmaker has addressed such disturbing subject matter so that the audience will relate to and sympathize with the lives and experiences of the film’s characters and their love and close bond with each other as brothers. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the adult brothers are portrayed by two very handsome and attractive actors who shed their clothes and bare lots of skin in several erotic scenes. After the screening, there was considerable discussion outside the theater by those in the audience. This

contentious SIFF entry raises lots of questions about social values and stigmas, and that is exactly what makes this an outstanding must-see film – the controversy! It is one of those rare films that will leave you thinking about the issues it raises for days afterwards, and while their relationship is disconcerting, it is skillfully conveyed.

Loose Cannons Rating: Very Good Humorous Melodrama Italy – Subtitled Antonio and Tammaso Cantone are the two sons in a family that owns a pasta company. When one of the brothers unexpectedly comes out, he foils his brother’s plan to escape the clutches of having to take over the family business by being disowned. The patriarch then places all of his hopes and dreams onto younger brother Tammaso, and soon things spiral out of control when his friends come to visit and the truth seems destined to reveal itself. While there is little new ground in the plot, it is nonetheless a fun, easy-to-watch film that again demonstrates the talent and ability of Italian filmmakers. Another worthwhile 2010 SIFF entry.

The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls Rating: Outstanding Documentary New Zealand May 30, 7:00 p.m.

May 31, 11:00 a.m., Egyptian Sometimes it is better not to count on published SIFF guides to judge whether or not to see a particular film, especially if it describes the subject as “yodeling Lesbian twins.” This description of this entry just fails to do justice to the subjects – twin sisters Jools and Lynda Topp, who have been performing as singers and comediennes in New Zealand for the past 30 years. The film uses archival footage of the identical twin teenaged girls performing years ago, and follows their remarkable careers from working on their family’s farm through the military and as street performers to earn beer money. What really makes them amazing is not only their talent – which is described as sounding as though they are singing in stereo – but also their comic portrayals of characters which the rural residents of New Zealand so strongly relate to and have popularized. They are very famous in their native land, even having starred in their own multiyear television series.

Yes, they do yodel, but that is only a small portion of their abilities as outstanding vocal performers and comics who have advanced the cause of LGBT rights in rural communities in New Zealand by being out since the inception of their careers as performers and taking the lead on political issues without hesitation. This film will have you leaving the theatre with their vocals and tunes etched into your memory. It is an outstanding and interesting biographical profile of these two remarkably talented performers.

Evan Thomas made the audience “feel it” when he sang Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and shifted gears to offer a different version of “Simple Man” by Shine Down.

There ain’t nothing wrong with a little soul – which is exactly what Clayton Coleman proved as he serenaded Idol fans with “So High” by John Legend and Al Green’s “A Change Gon Come.”

Week four’s Wild Card winner was contestant number four, Josh Porterfield. A true performer who took risks with song choice and vocal prowess, Josh won his way into the Wild Card Round by performing The Darkness’ “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” and Josh Groban’s “When You Say You Love Me.” When all was said and done, when all the Absolut cocktails were consumed and the Verizone Wireless text votes were tallied, it was contestant number one, Sabrina Burton, who took the top spot as week four’s winner. Choosing two songs that showed off her range as a singer and showcased her ability as a performer, Sabrina flawlessly sang Whitney Houston’s “Saving All My Love For You” and E Vogue’s “Don’t Let Go.” June is right around the corner and so is Pride. This year, SOaP has added another Pride event. On June 13, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., SOaP would like to invite everyone to Volunteer Park for a Pride Picnic. SOaP officials tell me that this is an all-ages event, open to families, singles, LGBTs and our allies – literally anyone and everyone – so mark your calendars and let’s have some fun in the park, Seattle!

“I am extremely proud of the evening,” said Starr. “We had six lovely contestants that all brought their best, some exciting out-of-town talent, and some of Washington’s best drag entertainers on stage. The energy in the room was electric, and I think Seattle was ready to see a fierce show with elaborate costuming and pageantry.”

The evening opened with a parade of the former regional and International La Femme Magnifique and La Femme Magnifique Plus titleholders from Oregon and Washington.

Darcelle XV and Starr introduced the five judges together: Seattle Gay News Editor in Chief George Bakan; cosmetologist Danielle Brown; La Femme Magnifique Seattle 1992 Fendi; La Femme Magnifique 1986 Misty Stevens; and former Emperor of Spokane Mark Surreal.

“There was an Evening Gown Competition, Theme Wear [from] “The Garden of Eden,” a Talent Presentation, and then Las Vegas Showgirl. In between each set we had former La Femmes and special guest entertainers perform, including Regent Empress Madison Lane, Miss Gay Seattle 45 GLAMAZONIA, and Miss Latin Look International 2009 Layla Manila,” Starr told SGN. Entertainment was provided by former La Femme Magnifique titleholders from across Washington and Oregon.

“I think that there was some tough competition since the key to winning this pageant is being consistent in each of the four categories,” said Starr.

The La Femme Magnifique Pageant is the most prestigious pageant in Washington state. Darcelle XV of Portland, Oregon searches for the most beautiful and glamorous female impersonators for her International Pageant, which is held Labor Day Weekend. Both the winner and the first runner-up (Lady Chablis) will go on to represent Washington in the international competition.

“As you can imagine, my team and I are still beaming from last night’s victory. We planned, worked, glued, nailed, stapled, cemented, taped, tucked, plucked, stuffed, sprayed, and crammed for this – and that was just to get me into the showgirl!” said Lily Armani about her win.

“All kidding aside, it was a beautiful and emotional evening. Being southern, I’m no stranger to hard work, and fortunately neither are the members of my team,” said Armani. “I have been incredibly blessed to be surrounded by some of the most brilliant and talented people you’d ever want to meet. It takes a village to make all of this happen, and being crowned the first La Femme Magnifique Washington wasn’t just my victory.”

“I have a great amount of respect for my fellow contestants. However, my mission wasn’t to be in competition with any of them,” said Armani. “I was focused on being in competition with myself. I had a clear vision and goal in mind. I knew what I wanted for myself and I focused solely on that. I strive to be greater than I was yesterday – and the day before, and the day before – each time I present myself on stage.”

According to Starr, there have been three winners from Washington state: Coco Vaughn from Tacoma in 1986, La Vanda Dela Rosa from Seattle in 1996, and Starr herself in 1994.

“On a personal note, it was a personal highlight for my mother to come and see me perform and co-host a show for the first time in my 17 years of drag. I am still overwhelmed about how well she was received and that she was able to share an important part of my life,” Starr told SGN. “Drag is making a strong comeback in Seattle with weekly and monthly shows at Chop Suey, Neighbours, Rebar, R-Place, and at restaurants like Julia’s. … Pageants like La Femme Magnifique give a creative outlet where groups can come together to help prepare contestants as well as an audience that knows that the show production and value will be higher than a typical bar show. La Femme Magnifique is our drag Miss Universe!” Starr told SGN. “The art of drag has been my passion and career for the past nine years. Being crowned La Femme Magnifique Washington is a tremendous honor. It is a ‘promotion’ in my profession – the same as in any career,” Armani told SGN. Armani is already gearing up for the international competition in September. Armani hopes to bring the La Femme Magnifique International title back to Washington state; the last titleholder, LaVanda Dela Rosa in 1996, is Armani’s drag mother.

This is the second event that Starr has hosted for GLSEN in 2010. All events Starr is producing this year under “Gaysha Starr Presents” will be fundraisers for GLSEN. “I think they do some very important work that will only benefit our community in the future,” said Starr.

“I am proud of the six girls for taking a chance and putting themselves out there and being gracious under pressure throughout the evening,” said Starr.

Harvey Fierstein plays the iconic Tevye.

The character is a hardworking man who tries to understand his changing world with a sense of humor and private aside monologues to God. Fierstein’s look and persona fit the role well, and then he breaks from tradition. While there can be many interpretations of Tevye, playing him as a teddy bear is not an approach usually taken – and here it is taken to the extreme. While the relationship between Tevye and God has its moments of levity, it is doubtful whether the character would actually stick his tongue out at God, or give backhanded gesticulations – even in jest – to the one source Tevye looks to for consolation and understanding. The character is played too cutesy and comes across less as a peasant milkman and more of (and I hate to say it) a dairy queen. Every commentary does not need to be punctuated with a facial mugging of the audience – think Fran Drescher starring in A Doll’s House. But the majority of the audience responded favorably to each precious gesture and overexaggerated look. When moments of tenderness were needed for the confrontation of his daughter Chava after she marries outside the faith, Mr. Fierstein comes through, and does it well. His face shows us his conflict forcing him into an expressive painful silence. It’s played emotionally and, thankfully, without adlibbing, and creates tenderness for several effective moments which allow the audience to see the full level of turmoil that has cracked Tevye’s human surface. Unfortunately, we have to wait until almost the completion of the second act before this occurs.

The rest of the cast shines, giving full support to (and sometimes carrying) what should be the heavy weight of the show. The women playing the three eldest daughters, Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava (Kaitlin Stilwell, Jamie Davis, Deborah Grausman), all have wonderful voices. They harmonize beautifully in “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and each shines in their solo songs. The girls’ suitors, Motel, Perchik, and Fyedka (Zal Owen, Colby Foytik, Matthew Marks), also help add positively strong notes to the cast.

They compliment their female counterparts well and when each couple is together on stage, it is easy from an audience’s point of view to see why they ended up with each other.

The original choreography was done by the great Jerome Robbins and has successfully been reproduced by director Sammy Dallas Bayes. The “Bottle Dance” is done to perfection, with all four men completely in synch. While not a huge dance show, this part of the wedding scene deserved and received its own applause from the audience.

Overall, Fiddler on the Roof does what it’s supposed to do; it entertains and educates the audience. The production definitely gives a strong message about a way of life and the effects the traditions we keep and those we change have, not only on our own lives, but on those lives around us. Remember that you are essentially seeing “The Harvey Fierstein Show” and you’ll have a great time. There’s a reason his name is above the title. Just keep one hand on your wallet; you will be mugged from the stage.

Originally based on a series of short stories by Sholem Aleichem entitled Tevye and his Daughters, the musical received its name from The Fiddler, a painting by Marc Chagall. Fiddler on the Roof opened on Broadway in 1965 and ran for over 3,200 performances, eventually setting a 10-year record for being the longest-running show on Broadway. Originally starring Zero Mostel (Tevye) and Bea Arthur (Yente) – both who won Tony Awards – the show was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and won nine, including Best Musical. In 1971, it was made into a film staring Israeli actor Topol (Tevye) and Leonard Frey (Motel). The film garnered three Academy Awards.

Eric Andrews-Katz: How long have you been working with Cirque du Soleil?

Adam Miller: I’ve been with Cirque since July 8, 2008, but didn’t start with Kooza until this past January.

Andrews-Katz: How many people does it take to set up/perform a Cirque du Soleil show?

Miller: Kooza has about 125 people that travel with the show. There are 53 artists who perform, including five musicians and two singers.

Andrews-Katz: What is your personal history of dance?

Miller: I’ve been a professional dancer for over 20 years. I was a featured dancer in Seattle [Pacific Northwest Ballet] for six years from 1980-‘86. The last few years I’ve been a choreographer.

Andrews-Katz: Your title with Kooza is “artistic director.” What does that entail with Cirque du Soleil?

Miller: The main sort of mandate is the overseeing of the quality and integrity of the show. You have to see that all of the various elements – from artistic view, wardrobe, music, and physical therapist – … remains true to the vision that David Shiner had when he created Kooza. There’s a great deal of responsibility with that.

Andrews-Katz: What are the origins of Cirque du Soleil?

Miller: Cirque celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Founder Guy Laliberté reached public sensation with the show Nouvelle Expérience. The signature element was that it wasn’t just chaining together a bunch of acts; he created a concept with a beginning, middle, and end. All the theatrical elements apply including costume design, set design, story design … to form what is called a narrative thread that leads the audience through the stories with a certain excitement attached to it.

Andrews-Katz: Is there a storyline to Kooza?

Miller: It’s a journey. There are two main characters: the Innocent, who isn’t necessarily a child, but someone who has not seen outside their small scope, and there’s also the Trickster, who introduces and brings the Innocent through a magical world of the Kingdom of Kooza. The journey includes both a dark and a light side. The traditional circus celebrates the act, but we try to celebrate the sophistication that the human body can do.

Andrews-Katz: How long of a training period do most Cirque performers complete before going into the show?

Miller: That can vary. Most of the artists have come from long lines of circus families. Our high wire act comes from six generations. Many of our ensemble artists come to a general formation conference in Montreal, where they will have a circus boot camp. They get trained for a particular show and usually specifically to the acts they’ll be performing. The training continues to teach dance, acting, and makeup. Then they come onto the performing site to reintegrate themselves into the show and eventually perform.

Usually it takes 8-16 weeks, depending on the individual and their particular performances.

Andrews-Katz: What’s the most common background training for Cirque performers?

Miller: That depends. In the ensemble, they will usually have gymnastics and acrosport training. [Acrosport is a competitive variety of acrobatics and gymnastics that is very popular in European nations.]

The featured acts usually come to us from previous circus training. Their acts are developed further in Montreal.

Andrews-Katz: Where do most Cirque performers originate?

Miller: We get a lot of people from countries in the former Soviet Union – Ukraine, Moldavia, Czech Republic – and from over 16 different countries.

Andrews-Katz: How long does it take to set up the Cirque Village?

Miller: It takes about a week for the Big Top to be set up and several days to be discontinued from cover mantled. We travel with about 50-60 trucks – each show varies.
