The 36th annual Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) has officially begun. I sat down with SIFF’s artistic director, Carl Spence, and let him do the majority of the heavy lifting on this preview piece – after all, when you’re talking about a 25-day festival spotlighting 405 features, documentaries, and shorts from 67 countries, why not turn to the man responsible for helping assemble this smorgasbord to put it into some sort of cohesive perspective?

You may recognize one or two songs – maybe “Glitter and Be Gay” or “Make Our Garden Grow” – but most likely haven’t heard a complete recording. There are many reasons why this may be. Contributors to the musical read like an extensive “who’s who” of creative genius: music by Leonard Bernstein, scripts written by Lillian Hellman and Hugh Wheeler, and lyrics credited to Dorothy Parker, John La Touche, and Stephen Sondheim, to name a few.

Shrek Forever After marred by lazy writing

conclusion. Sadly, as the film stretched to 140 minutes, that was one wish that did not come to pass. Others that also failed to materialize: More detail in the glorious subplot revolving around von Sydow, less of Mark Strong’s forgettable duplicitous lead villain Godfrey, some more depth revolving around Robin and Marion’s budding romance, and a heck of a lot more of the political wheeling and dealing going on between the newly crowned King John and his brother’s onetime trusted advisor William Marshall (William Hurt).

But wait, there’s more! Mentioning everything that this new Robin Hood is not (yet still manages to infuriatingly hint at) would force me to not talk about everything this disastrous epic does poorly. What I will say is that there are tons of potential here, so much that I silently sit here while I type and fantasize about the movie that might have been.

Granted, fantasizing about the Robin Hood that might have been is like wondering what would have happened had the American Idol judges not lost their collective minds and given Michael Lynch their save when other contestants (i.e. Siobhan Magnus) clearly deserved it more. All I can talk about is the picture that was delivered and not the one I wanted, and even if said delivery was a waste of time and effort, at the very least it did give me plenty to think about as the curtain finally closed.

Seriously, I came out of this wondering what in the heck the filmmakers were thinking. An origin story that

has no clue as to the best way to focus its narrative, a historical epic that wouldn’t know excitement if it came up and bit it in the butt, Scott and company so thoroughly dropped the ball this could quite possibly be the biggest mistake of the legendary Oscarnominated director’s entire career. The pacing is turgid, the narrative is nonsensical, and the best bits feel cribbed from other sources.

This film has no idea what it is or who it has been made for, and unlike previous Scott misfires like A Good Year, White Squall, or Black Rain, there’s not a single redeeming moment that makes the dullness of the rest even slightly worthwhile.

Pity, because Crowe was born to play the title character and Blanchett equally so to portray his lady love. Had this been a bit more focused I could see the two of them soaring as Robin and Marion, as their delicate give and take is a ferociously engaging balancing act that insinuates wonderments never to be told. I also think Isaac is fantastic as the Machiavellian British monarch, and if Scott and company had chosen to tell a story solely about him and his reign, we potentially could have had something grand to talk about.

But that’s another might-have-been and thus not really worth the effort to talk about.

The bottom line is that this Robin Hood is thudding in its pacing, disjointed in its storytelling, and muddled in just about every other way. It is a long, joyless exercise in tedium that defies imagination. This new journey to Sherwood Forest is an arrow to the jugular that’s as lifeless as it is disappointing.

Robin Hood Now Playing An archer fighting under King Richard the Lionheart (Danny Huston) on the trek home from the crusades, Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe) and some of his fellow soldiers are done with the bloodshed. After their leader falls outside a French castle, he and his men make their way back to England, crossing paths with dying knight Sir Robert of Loxley (Douglas Hodge) who has been charged with taking the royal crown back to London.

One things leads to another, and next thing Robin knows, he and his fellow archers are wearing the garb of the fallen knights. After returning the crown and witnessing the crowning of King John (Oscar Isaac) by his mother Eleanor of Aquitaine (Eileen Atkins),

they head for the township of Nottingham.

There they meet the lovely Marion Loxley (Cate Blanchett), and what at first was only intended to be a quick stopover instead becomes an extended impersonation after Sir Walter Loxley (Max von Sydow) urges the soldier to continue his impersonation of his son.

There’s more, lots more, going on inside director Ridley Scott’s (Alien, Body of Lies) newfangled (if historically semi-accurate) Robin Hood. In fact, there is so much going on with writer Brian Helgeland’s (Green Zone, L.A. Confidential) screenplay that the overall effect is a muddled and confused mess. One part British lore, two parts Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven-style medieval warmongering, and three parts The Tudorstype melodrama, all with a dash of The Lord of the Rings and Peter Pan thrown in for good measure – the movie is a bizarre, disconnected disaster.

My greatest wish watching it was that the movie would at least come to a quick

If you’re over 8 years old and you absolutely must have a Shrek fix, rent the original and save yourself some cash and be reminded that even an ogre can find true love. If you’ve got kids under 8 years old, make sure to take them to see it in IMAX, because the 3-D visuals are the best thing about Shrek Forever After.

Shrek Forever After Opening May 21 Take one part It’s a Wonderful Life, add a dash of pop culture references, a little Wizard of Oz, a touch of Faustian deal-making, a bevy of stars, and a dollop of Brothers Grimm, and you get Shrek Forever After.

On the positive side, the production values are great. The movie looks good. The animation is fascinating, the 3-D turned out nicely, and the perspective tricks are fun without being corny. This is the first Shrek film in 3-D, and they’ve been made before – three times before, in fact.

The actors know what they’re doing, even if they seem a tad bored. Cameron Diaz, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderas are vets with mega star power who are sleepwalking through this one, and I get the feeling the only thing that will jolt them from their slumber is the sound of money falling through the air. But you can’t blame them; they’ve all been here before – three times, in fact.

The new villain, Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn), is mean and greedy and vaguely effeminate, as usual. There are witches and dragons and scads of familiar characters

tossed together who don’t traditionally go together, just like before – three times, in fact.

It’s all been done before but that’s not the ultimate sin of Shrek Forever After.

The ultimate sin is the lazy writing. The fourth Shrek flick finds the ogre bored with married life and losing his identity to his relationship (it’s tough to be a father AND an ogre). Like a ’70s-era car lot owner with white patent leather loafers and a matching belt, Shrek wants out.

This rather abject, yet all too familiar scenario is not the typical fairy tale horror show that usually falls upon our fairy tale protagonists. I have a feeling these scenes will ring way too true for many kids in the audience. As Shrek began to draw his discontent, a young girl behind me let out an involuntary groan and said quite

loudly, “I don’t want to watch this.” It was heartbreaking.

The rest of the story is a rehash and hodgepodge of familiar plot turns and standard fairy tale devices. I won’t worry about ruining the end-

This year’s “Gay-La” screening of Violet Tendencies begins at 7 p.m. on June 9, at the Egyptian Theatre, with an afterparty at Re-Bar immediately following. Tickets to the film and Gay-La party are $25 ($23 for SIFF members) and include admission to the film and party, hors d’oeuvres, and two complimentary cocktails.

For the anti-social types, tickets for the film alone are $13 ($11 for SIFF members).

Violet Tendencies stars Mindy Cohn (yes, that Mindy Cohn) as a – wait. Let me stop right here. If you need another reason to see this film, you don’t deserve to see this film. If you don’t know who Mindy Cohn is, look it up and I wager you’ll pop for a ticket faster than I can say, “You take the good, you take the bad….”

The other big Queer party lands at Pony following the June 3 screening of Undertow, a Peruvian film from director Javier FuentesLeon about a couple, Miguel and Mariela, who are expecting their first child. The prob-

lem is that Miguel is in love with Santiago.

According to the SIFF press notes, it “starts off as something of a seaside Brokeback Mountain.” The screening starts at 7 p.m. at the Egyptian Theatre, and the party starts at 9 p.m. at Pony.

I’m also excited to see Howl, directed by Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, the team responsible for The Times of Harvey Milk and The Celluloid Closet.

Howl stars soap opera star James Franco as Beat generation stalwart and Howl (the poem) author Allen Ginsberg.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have a huge crush on James Franco, and if he starred in a frame-for-frame remake of Gigli, I’d probably go. Be forewarned, my greatest crush playing one of my literary heroes could lead to spontaneous ejaculation during the show.

The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls is getting lots of pre-fest buzz. The award-winning documentary from New Zealand has become a film fest darling around the world and stars Jools and Lynda Topp, the world’s only yodeling Lesbian twins. The music is said to be amazing (they also sing two-part harmonies on acoustic country tunes) and laughs are said to come fast and furious. I can’t wait.

I must also mention a film that isn’t listed under the Gay/Lesbian genre in the SIFF sifter (I love to say that out loud), but has a wonderfully drawn Lesbian character. I Am Love stars the incomparable Tilda Swinton as a Russian trophy wife of an Italian industrial magnate who falls in love with her son’s best friend. In one of the loveliest comingout scenes in all of cinema, Swinton’s character’s daughter (played by Alba Rohrwacher) comes out to her mom. The scene is absolutely real and touching without being a bit maudlin. There are many reasons to see I Am Love and this coming-out scene is just one of them.

So there you have it, a Queer primer for SIFF 2010. Gird your loins, boys and girls – and everyone else – because SIFF is upon us. Twenty-five days, 406 films, and immeasurable movie magic is coming your way.

Do your homework and find your favorites, because it will be over before you know it.

Even with the important issues that were brought up it’s still an exploitation film and made in that style, and I think people need to keep that in perspective.

Fetters: So you don’t foresee any trouble with showing that film?

Spence: I don’t think so, no. It’s an exploitation film. It’s like any of those films, like watching a Russ Meyer film. It’s no different than any other exploitation film. It’s not doing anything in a derogatory way. I think it’s great and a lot of fun. It is definite-

ly a midnight film and it isn’t for everyone, [but] I don’t see anything negative about it.

Fetters: So, putting you on the spot, if a person only has time to go to five films during the festival, what five do you send them to go see?

Spence: Oh, that’s not fair. Five films?

What do I have them go see? Anything?

How about Howl, The Hedgehog from France, Loose Cannons, directed by Ferzan Ozpetek, Farewell – Farewell is simply a film everyone must see – and any film out of our New Director’s Showcase, but if I had to choose one, I’d say Angel at Sea. But that’s just a few. I could go on and on and on, but that’s probably enough for now.

by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer Music of Remembrance presents Vedem May 10 Benaroya Hall Teenage Jewish boys, imprisoned in the Terezin concentration camp for two years, wrote and collected poetry, essays, and illustrations in a hidden journal that they named “Vedem” (That’s Czech for “in the lead”). They did this while suffering starvation, cold, typhus, typhoid, lice, vermin, and who knows what kinds of mistreatment at the hands of the Nazi officers.

At the extraordinary debut of the Holocaust oratorio, Vedem, Music of Remembrance, which commissioned the work, presented not only a stunning performance but also a dramatic testimonial by four of the six living survivors of Terezin. These men, now in their 80s, came from Florida, New Jersey, Toronto, and Australia to be part of this world premiere. They came in tribute to their fellow “inmates” and what they all suffered. Before the concert, we met them in a panel discussion of their history. Far from feeble, they offered testimony to the spirit that helped them and the words of Vedem survive, both as a book and as text of this oratorio.

An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein Theater Schmeater Through June 12 Some people know Shel Silverstein from his best-selling kid’s book, The Giving Tree.

But his adult side is far more sinister and demented, and maybe a whole lot more fun.

Ten of his short adult theater pieces are being presented at Theater Schmeater, directed

by Julia Griffin. Some dig deeper than others into the dark human psyche, and some are funnier than others, but since they are all short, you can just wait a bit if one makes you uncomfortable.

One Tennis Shoe has Harvey (John Q. Smith) trying hard to tell his wife, Sylvia (Sara Coates), a terrible truth: She’s turning into a bag lady! Sylvia finds it impossible to believe until he makes her reveal the contents of her bag and purse. Coates’ turn from normal suburban housewife to potential bag lady is pretty slam-dunk.

In Bus Stop, a creepy guy (Michael D. Blum) walks up to a woman stranger (Lisa Viertel) and names her chest in various ways. Creepy, but she starts to look like she likes it – or does she?

An auctioneer (Ashley Bagwell) auctions off a woman (Alyssa Keene) in Going Once.

She promises to do anything you want her to do, and the auctioneer will tell you in detail, if your imagination doesn’t go far enough to help out.

Lisa (Megan Ahiers) has The Best Daddy (John Q. Smith), who leads her to a field to

The program began with “In Memoriam” for cello and string quartet, by Gerard Schwarz. His son, Julian, played the cello, as he had back in 2007 at the world premiere of For a Look or a Touch. This nine-minute work, like Seattle Opera’s recent world premiere of Amelia, is a perfect example of music that is not difficult to hear but requires several auditions to appreciate. Fortunately, it is included on the previously mentioned CD of For a Look or a Touch.

Of greater length and substance was the following “String Quartet No. 3” by Pavel Haas (b. Bruno, 1899 - d. Auschwitz, 1944).

With never a dull moment, the quartet varied greatly in tonality, with the basic idiom not far removed from that of Bartok. The slower second movement had a folksy march in it middle, and the closing “Allegro vivace” became almost drunken near the end.

Not on the program, but inserted after the opening work, was Dvorak’s “Humoresque,” played by violinist Leonid Keylin and pianist Mina Miller. This tune was, as Mina pointed out, a marvelous demonstration of the power of music to inspire and sustain, for it was what made it possible for one of the survivors, Emil Kopel, to keep going during the death march to Auschwitz.

It ran like an “earworm” through his mind and counteracted the effects of seeing his friends die when they could no longer go on.

Kopel, sitting near me, was sobbing as Mina told this story.

Music of Remembrance attracts great, impassioned musicians. The music is always first-rate and should not be missed.

This world premiere was sold out, and the audience could not have been more appreciative.

He was not sent on to the Auschwitz death camp because he protested to the officers that his father could not do his work without him, thus staying to the end at Terezin. After the liberation, Taussig returned to that shop and dug up the pages.

(I caught one of these men backstage and asked him a rather naive question: Were there any pink triangles in the room they lived in? He replied, “Oh no, we were only children!” Yet the moving opera, For a Look or a Touch by Jake Heggie, also commissioned in 2007 by MOR, describes just how young one could be to face death by the Nazi regime for being homosexual! Librettist David Mason and composer Lori Laitman, whom we also met at the preconcert discussion, collaborated on the score. The music was very easy on the ears, often in three-quarter time, and beautifully written for the voice. Tenor Ross Hauck and mezzo-soprano Angela Niederloh joined the Northwest Boychoir, under Joseph Crnko.

Mikhail Shmidt, violin; Laura DeLuca, clarinet; Walter Gray, cello; and Mina Miller, piano, provided the instrumental support.

The mood varied greatly from mournful, to cocky (words of Nazi officials), to comic.

For instance,

stein originally wrote Viertel’s character as a man. Having a woman instead brings some interesting dimensions and less of a violent, confrontational message. Kudos to Griffin for making the change.

Thinking Up a New Name for the Act has only three words to use: “meat,” “potatoes,” and “and.” It’s a longish piece but an interesting way to use these words to tell a story.

It’s a visual, folks….

Buy One, Get One Free has Keene and Ahiers hysterically making double entendres in funny verse as they market their wares to Bagwell. But he has figured out that they are actually charging double the regular price, so there’s no “free” – or even a deal.

The last piece, Blind Willie and the Talking Dog, has John Q. Smith being the blind guy with Barney, the dog (Michael D. Blum). Barney is chafing because he’s hungry and they’re not getting any attention or donations to eat. Why doesn’t Blind Willie take advantage of the fact that Barney can really talk? They could be millionaires! Will Barney leave Willie and go out on his own to earn fame and fortune? Does Blind Willie have a good reason why he doesn’t showcase a talking dog to get money? This last one is almost a heart-tugger.

The production is artfully set on a bed of book pages, with stacks of books in tall, irregular columns, the brainstorm of designer Michael Mowery. Ahiers is pitch-perfect as the wide-eyed 13-year-old whose present is lying dead under a blanket. Then Smith, whose character is steadily drinking throughout, tells her it’s “April fools.” So what is really under the blanket? What comes next is even sicker.

The Lifeboat is Sinking, only it’s really just a game that Jen (Lisa Viertel) is playing with her husband (Matthew Middleton) to get him to choose who he would save, his wife or his mother. Middleton gets more and more distressed at the game, as Viertel presses harder and harder for him to choose.

You know who he has to choose, don’t you?

After all, his mother isn’t there to play the game.

In Smile, Matthew Middleton is the guy who made up all those awful phrases we know – “Keep on Truckin’,” “Right On,” the smiley face symbol – and there’s a team of baddies (Ashley Bagwell, Alyssa Keene and Sara Coates) who want to kill him for that. But do they have the right guy?

Marianne (Megan Ahiers) brings her clothes to the Wash and Dry, she thinks. It turns out that it’s the “Watch and Dry,” and the sign is misleading. Georgia (Lisa Viertel in her creepiest, most down and out characterization) contends that she has watched Marianne’s clothes and has proof. Marianne wants to report her to the Better Business Bureau, but Georgia shows Marianne exactly what she has watched, and Marianne probably doesn’t want anyone to know what Georgia has found! Kurt & Warhol exhibits are thought-provoking at SAM

Great poetry and fun political music Rita Dove Mercy was knocked out by Rita Dove’s presentation at Seattle Arts and Lectures.

She was reading from “Sonata Mulattica,” the story of George Augustus Polgreen Bridgewater, a mulatto musical prodigy, who Beethoven dedicated a sonata to, then changed his mind. Bridgewater all but disappeared from history. Dove reconstructs his life and story in his words, as well as those of Beethoven and Haydn, who also met him.

She speculates the difficulty between Bridgewater, who was handsome, and Beethoven, who wasn’t, had to do with a woman. Mercy liked the poem, “Rain,” which dealt with Beethoven’s loss of hearing: “Because we’re wading through wreckage, we’re/not even listening to all the crash and clatter/chords wrenched from their moorings, smashed/etudes, arpeggios glistening as they heave and sink.”

Mercy also likes that Dove is a ballroom dancer. In the question and answer period, the poet talked about how dance works as a metaphor: Once you learn the steps, you can move anywhere.

Clare Meeker sang the homophobia tango with spooky accuracy. Her piano work throughout was elegant. Other high points were “Missing Molly Ivins,” “Big, Fat, Naked Women for Peace,” and “Pesky Angels.”

Liquidity liked the fact that the group’s tight harmonies reflect how long they have played together. Karma liked their wittiness.

She said, “They are clearly getting older with the rest of us. The spirit is there.”

National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) Benefit at Storm Game Cuteness found the information about this and is excited because the NCLR has done so much good. The combination of benefiting them and seeing a Storm Game and meeting one of the players sounds intriguing.

Dan Hicks Mercy and Cuteness really enjoyed Dan Hicks’ concert at the Triple Door. Hicks’ voice was luscious. The band, the Hot Licks – which included Sid Page on violin, Kevin Smith on upright bass, Gregg Bissonette on drums, and Jessica Harper and Karla De Vito on background vocals – rocked out.

Hicks joked that people sometimes ask if he gets paid by the song or by the minute.

He said, “The minute, so I can stand up here all night and talk.” Later, he said, pointedly, that anyone who has been conversing through the music could voluntarily hand him $20.

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Frightened Rabbit May 16 Neumos Going from good to great is harder than you think – just ask the many musical acts who’ve stumbled on their way up the career ladder. This can be attributed to lots of things, but it usually involves lack of talent and bad choices. Neither of these elements seems to have plagued Frightened Rabbit, a U.K.-based quintet that appears to be doing everything right at the moment. On their sophomore album The Winter of Mixed Drinks, the band sticks close to its humble Scottish folk roots with obvious showings of expansion, but where the group has really strengthened is on stage.

From the last time I saw Frightened Rabbit live – two years ago at Chop Suey – to last weekend’s sold-out appearance at Neumos, they’ve molded themselves into an exciting, captivating stage performance. They’re still a blast to watch, but they’ve padded their songs with more confidence and even more bite.

Frightened Rabbit opened with “Skip the Youth” from the new album, then backstroked to its 2008 debut, The Midnight Organ Fight, for the second entry on the set list, “The Modern Leper.” Immediately, I noticed the band’s elevated sound, partly due to the venue’s cranked speaker system, though undoubtedly the five-piece is louder.

From my viewpoint, it looked as if an extra guitarist was included in the lineup.

This week, the usual suspects – Andrew Miller, Sister Domine Trix, and yours truly – returned to offer constructive criticism.

We were joined by a very special guest judge – the incomparable Alice Stuart, a blues legend in the Pacific Northwest – for a memorable night of laughter, vocal talent, and Pride!

It’s not easy to go first, but contestant number one, Ului Teulilo, made it appear so as he belted Billy Paul’s “Me and Mrs. Jones.”

Ului clearly set the tone for the evening as a hush fell over the audience; the whole of R Place was hanging on his every word.

Yee-Shin Huang, contestant number two, sang “Down” by Jay Sean (featuring Lil Wayne) in true pop music fashion. Yee-Shin had great energy as he stripped himself of the blazer he was wearing and began rapping.

Ryan McCabe, the night’s Wild Card Round winner, performed George Michael’s “Freedom 90” while wearing a Bette Midler T-shirt. He went out into the audience sang his heart out.

Jacquelynne Rose turned R Place into a teen pop music set as she sang Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the USA.” Contestant number five, Raymond (last name withheld), also offered a pop tart, as he used every inch of R Place’s dance floor (and stripper pole) to perform Britney Spears’ “I’m a Slave for You.” Contestant number seven, Cassidy Katims, brought the mood down for the lovers

“Old Old Fashioned” was met with cheerful appreciation throughout the crowd on both club levels. Some mouthed the lyrics, while others clapped their hands or bobbed their heads. “The Twist,” another older favorite, drew the same reaction.

Going into the show, “The Wrestle” was my pick for the best track off the latest CD, but after hearing “Swim Until You Can’t See Land” twice – once at Neumos, and earlier in the day at a Sonic Boom Records in-store session – I’ve now changed my mind.

A pair of songs from The Midnight Organ Fight closed out the main set: “Head Rolls Off” and “Good Arms vs. Bad Arms.” The former, perhaps the strongest of the album, was delivered perfectly by the band. I just loved the intensity of the melancholy/edgy blend of sound.

For an encore, lead singer Scott Hutchison marveled on an acoustic solo rendition of “Poke” – you could literally hear a sniffle as he whisperingly crooned the chorus. The group put a cap on the performance with stinging versions of “Living in Color” and “Keep Yourself Warm.”

To say Frightened Rabbit is going places is an understatement. It’s really a matter of how fast they’re getting there.

Chicago newcomers Maps & Atlases played an impressive opening set of tunes, mainly from their forthcoming debut Perch Patchwork. At times they were a hippy take on Vampire Weekend, which is a good thing, and other times they were a beautiful mess of clunky rock. The well-bearded quartet returns to Seattle next month to the Vera Project. in the house as he crooned to the audience with Michael Bubble’s “Home.”

The highlight of the night (other than Sister Domine Trix’s India-inspired outfit with glitter – lots and lots of glitter) was contestant number six. Returning from week two’s shocking upset (where the instantly popular Pablo took first place), I am happy to report that Elisha Anderson won ... At Last!

Singing the hell out of the famous Etta James ballad, Elisha brought the capacity crowd to their feet as she nailed each and every note and finished as strong as she started. Elisha won over even the toughest of critics (cue Andrew Miller, “You’d better impress me!”) by flawlessly covering one of the greatest songs ever penned. Make no mistake, Seattle: Elisha is, thus far, the one to beat.

Katrina Duall, who’s been doing “gender illusion” for 12 years, is Washington’s La Femme Magnifique Plus candidate. On the first Sunday of every month, patrons of the Airport Tavern in Tacoma catch Katrina Duall’s show, Le Sparkle. An accomplished performer, Katrina has held such titles as Princess of Illusions (Hawaii), Miss Debutante XIV (Tacoma), and Imperial Princess XXX (Tacoma), but says she has her eye on the La Femme Magnifique Plus title.

“To be a ‘La Femme’ is an honor and a validation of my art,” she told SGN. “For any queen, there is nothing better than to be named the most beautiful, the most feminine, the most glamorous!”

Going after the La Femme Magnifique title is R Place’s own Chablis. Performing in drag for the past eight years, Chablis hosts a number of shows each and every week and

can be seen performing at benefits, pageants, and special events. Chablis is the proud holder of such titles as Empress XXVI of The Imperial Sovereign Court of Tacoma, La Femme Magnifique first runner-up, Ms. Gay World Series, La Femme winner of Tacoma, and Princess XXV of The Court of Tacoma.

“I love competing in La Femme Magnifique because it allows me to be creative and to think outside the box – especially when it comes to theme wear,” Chablis told SGN. “I enjoy performing in front of a large audience to put a smile on their faces. The competition this Sunday is going to be fun! I am competing against some really powerful performers and we all plan to give Seattle a great show.”

Lily Armani, “The Flower of Couture,” is also competing for La Femme Magnifique.

Performing as a drag artist for nine years, Armani can be seen on Friday nights at Neighbours in her show Lily Armani: unTucked. Recently awarded an honorary Ph.D from the University of Phoenix, Lily also boasts that she was first runner-up in La Femme Magnifique International in 2005.

“Winning ‘La Femme Magnifique Washington’ would award me the opportunity to compete at the International level,” Lily told SGN. “Continuing on and winning International would then give me the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of one of my many ‘she-roes,’ Sarah Palin. Excelling in the pageant and exceeding her victory (she finished third on a state level, while La Femme Magnifique International is International) would mean that I could potentially become a high-profile figure and own a house that would allow me to see Russia from my home, too. This victory and so much more could be achieved with having a ‘popular’ daughter that I would have to compete with for the cover of People or the Seattle Gay News. You’re welcome!”

Also in the running for this year’s La Femme Magnifique Washington title is 10-year drag vet Jenu-Wine Beaute of Tacoma. Past titles include La Femme Tacoma (2001), Miss Gay Tacoma (2002-3), Empress XXV The Court of Tacoma, and 2006 Le Femme Olympia.

“I’ve wanted this title for a long time,” she told SGN. “The last time I ran was in 2001.

I’ve studied on what I need to do and I am ready. La Femme Magnifique is a classy title and very prestigious honor to win. I really look forward to seeing everybody at the competition on Sunday!”

According to Gaysha Starr, the contestants will compete in the evening gown, theme wear (this year’s theme being “The Garden of Eden”), talent, and Las Vegas Showgirl categories. In addition, Gaysha Starr said that, in between each competition set, a former La Femme Magnifique will perform. The famous Darcelle XV will open the show.

The 5th Avenue Theatre will shortly be taking on this amorphous musical. Two prominent cast members, Stanley Bahorek (Candide) and Mike McGowan (Maximilian), took time from their rehearsals to give the SGN a few insights into the show.

Eric Andrews-Katz: Gentlemen, whom do you play, and will you describe your characters?

Stanley Bahorek: I play Candide, and he’s the physical embodiment of youth itself, pure philosophical optimism.

Mike McGowan: I play Maximilian [and several other roles]. He’s kind of a cross between Jack McFarland and Nellie Olsen.

Andrews-Katz: There are several different incarnations of Candide. Which version is the 5th Avenue’s production based on?

Bahorek: More of the 1999 Royal National Theatre version revised by John Caird. Caird wrote a new book for the story,

closer to the actual Voltaire novel.

McGowan: There is more music in this version.

Andrews-Katz: Would you consider the show to be a musical, or more of an operetta?

Bahorek: It’s being treated and approached as a contemporary musical.

McGowan: It’s more of a personal interpretation as opposed to previous renditions.

We do everything that musical theater can do for storytelling.

Andrews-Katz: What is the greatest contribution to Candide: Voltaire’s script, either script adaptation, or the long list of lyricists?

Bahorek: I think the fact that so many geniuses have worked on the show says it all.

McGowan: Everyone’s collaboration helped it evolve. The first time it played [in 1956], it took itself too seriously. In the ‘70s, it was more with a Monty Python edge.

In this edition, we find a fantastic balance between the crazy humor and the sincere spiritual quest that Candide is on.

Andrews-Katz: Candide is a classic show, but many people don’t know the story. How do you summarize Candide’s adventures?

Bahorek: Epic! It’s a hero’s quest. He travels the world from the Old European to the New Americas and back again. I think a big part of Voltaire is: How can this idea of optimism survive the world when all kinds of bad things happen to one person?

McGowan: It’s a classic example of philosophy, religion, and faith, and how one belief system cannot encompass the beliefs of the entire world.

Andrews-Katz: Candide has a reputation of being one of the most difficult musicals to put on. Why do you think that is so?

Bahorek: In a practical sense, there are a dozen different versions of the show, so it’s continually being revisited, edited, and looked at. There’s something unsettled in how to tell the story, but it’s one of the best scores ever written.

McGowan: Musically, it has some really hard operatic singing. Plus it takes place in over 20 different countries and has scenes dealing with earthquakes, shipwrecks, and the Spanish Inquisition. These things are not told; they are shown to the audience.

Bahorek: The auto-da-fé is definitely a nod to what was going on at the time: McCarthyism.

McGowan: All organized religions, all dogmatic schools of philosophy, get attacked. It skewers the systems of class.

Andrews-Katz: How does the social satire reflect today’s society?

Bahorek: The things that ring truest for me are the ideas of blind faith and how an individual acts when there is global tragedy.

In the show, a Grand Inquisitor says that heretics caused the earthquake in Lisbon. It reminded me of Pat Robertson.

McGowan: When tragedies hit, there are religious pontificates that blame different groups for the disasters. It’s scary that Voltaire wrote this [in 1759] and it’s still happening today in the world.

Andrews-Katz: Voltaire was opposed to the Church and its practices of the times.

You’ve touched on some, but how else does this influence the storyline?

Bahorek: Voltaire doesn’t give religion as much importance as he gives to optimism.

McGowan: He doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Voltaire saw those kinds of dogmas as being foolish with the hypocrisy they show in their own belief systems.

Candide originally opened on Broadway on December 1, 1956. Despite it only running for 73 performances, it was still nominated for five Tony Awards. A revival was mounted on Broadway in 1974 directed by Hal Prince, and ran for 740 performances.

It was nominated for eight Tony Awards and won in five different categories, including Best Book of a Musical. A second revival opened in April 1997, running for 104 performances and was again directed by Hal Prince. This time the musical was nominated for four Tony Awards, only winning one for Best Costume Design.
