2010 SOAP PRIDE IDOL R PLACE SUNDAYS THROUGH JUNE 20 Last Sunday, four Seattle Out and Proud (SOaP) Pride Idol contestants proved that numbers are not as important as personality as they made the judges – and the audience – sing along, laugh, and cheer.

Pablo (last name withheld due to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”; Pablo is an active duty sailor in the U.S. Navy), Nathan Tran, Kristopher Zello, and Elisha Anderson were, by far, the most spirited and engaging contestants so far this season. Week two of the contest was amazing to say the least!

Wearing the very latest in nunpunk garb and in “sister face,” Pride Idol judge Sister Domine Trix opened the show with a lip-sync and dance routine to “Loosen up my Buttons” by the Pussycat Dolls.

Because last week’s show fell on Mother’s Day, only four contestants were on hand. Pablo, Nathan, Kris, and Elisha were the right four!

When contestant number one, Pablo, approached the judge panel (Andrew Miller, Sister Domine Trix, and yours truly) to sing Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” I knew we were in for a treat. Although Pablo is not the best singer the world has ever known, he is a star. He engaged the audience, projected sex appeal, and was funny, to boot. Just when I thought we’d seen the best of Pablo, he surprised everyone by singing Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary” (complete with dance moves) as his second song. Fiddler on the Roof May 25-30 Paramount TheatRE There are many ways to describe Harvey Fierstein, but the one word that comes foremost to mind is “unique.” His lists of accomplishments is impressive. He’s penned the scripts for several Broadway shows and an award-winning children’s book, The Sissy Duckling. He is one of only two people to win Tony Awards in four separate categories, and one of two actors to win a Tony Award for playing a role of the opposite gender. His voice is as unmistakable as his presence, and Seattle is awaiting his next arrival. Touring as Tevye, the milkman, in the current production of Fiddler on the Roof, Harvey Fierstein took time from his busy schedule to grant the SGN an interview.

Nick Ardizzone: Tell me a little about Three Dollar Bill Cinema’s Translations film festival.

Sara Michelle Fetters: The Translations film festival is a short, weekend-long festival celebrating Transgender filmmakers and films, as well as Trans-related images in film in general. It’s a chance to spotlight a vital part of the LGBT community that, sadly, tends to get overlooked. By grabbing films from all over the world, viewers get an amazing spectrum of ideas and concepts related to the Transgender community.

People tend to think the spectrum as it relates to Trans issues is rather small – that it’s a relatively simple to describe the journey between genders, either male to female or vice-versa. But that’s not the case at all, as the gender spectrum is broader than the rainbow itself.

Ardizzone: Why is a Trans film fest so important to the LGBT community? Aren’t there enough Queer movie festivals al-

Fetters: As a film critic, I totally understand where that question comes from.

There are so many different festivals spotlighting so many communities that it can quickly become a chore to deal with them all. Jewish Film Festivals. Scandinavian Film Festivals. Natural World Film Festivals. African American Film Festivals. Lesbian & Gay Film Festivals. A film festival about microbes dancing polka on Hollywood movie star toothbrushes. While I obviously made that last one up, I think you get what I’m going at.

But the thing we forget is that each of these communities offers up something vital and different that we don’t normally get the opportunity to fully explore in your normal, all-encompassing film festival. Why do we need a Jewish Film Festival when so many Jewish films get screened during the Seattle International Film Festival? Why do we need a Transgender Film Festival when Trans-related films are certainly going to be screened during the Lesbian & Gay Film Festival?

I think the answers to these questions are relatively simple. In a festival like SIFF or SLGFF, you get only a taste of what films about those cultures and communities can offer. They are the appetizer to what these shorter, more focused festivals can deliver.

In other words, a festival like Translations is the full meal. It is the heart and the soul.

It is an exploration into a culture and a community you just don’t get the chance to experience in a broader setting. So do I think a festival like Translations is important? You bet I do.

Ardizzone: This is the fifth annual festival. How has it changed over the last five years? Have you noticed that the movies in the festival are progressing or changing at all?

Fetters: Having been involved as programmer three of the five years of the festi-

we are born. There are only two options.

Males have a penis and wear blue. Females do not have a penis and wear pink. There is nothing in between.

We are taught this from the moment we’re born along with other indisputable facts, like all people are either democrats or republicans, protestant or catholic, ugly or beautiful, and smart or stupid.

Binary systems are tidy and uncomplicated. It’s no wonder we like to divide the world up into them. But eventually we begin to understand that between the two extremes of most binary systems there lies a lot of gray.

Jake Yuzna’s film Open takes a look (literally) at the use of surgery to bring one’s body into line with their psychic gender. This is an unfortunate oversimplification of a complicated little movie. Let me try again.

Jake Yuzna’s film Open is about bodies in flux, modern medicine, the pathology of gender variation, love and relationships, and a phenomenon called “pandrogyny.”

Let’s get this out of the way: The acting is amateurish and the production values are challenging. The ending takes itself a bit seriously, too. That said, this is one of the most radical, provocative, and insightful films I’ve seen all year. It’s also totally original, current, and intellectually sound.

Open features five characters negotiating gender within the mid-American cityscape. Syd and Nick are val, including the inaugural festival back in 2006, I definitely think things have changed over the years. Not only have submissions to Translations increased, personally I think the quality of the films – whether they be shorts, documentaries, or narrative features – has also risen as well. While I sadly did not have the time to program this year’s festival, I have seen a handful of the films submitted for potential inclusions. I was struck by how the quality level has risen in so many of them, in how the subjects they chose to broach and the way they chose to explore them was more original and inspiring than in years past.

Ardizzone: The film festival will include a panel discussion about Trans imagery in film. What kinds of things will the panel discuss? Will it be particularly important for the LGBT community to hear?

Fetters: [Laughs.] Of course it will be important for the LGBT community to hear! How could it not be? Imagine all of the Trans images we have been bombarded with on reality television over the decades.

From Donahue to Jerry Springer to America’s Next Top Model to RuPaul’s Drag Race to TRANSform Me, things have evolved in a way that is beyond extraordinary. Just think about how far Trans images on television have come. Can you imagine a world where a show like Friends would openly and honestly talk about what it is like to be the child of a Transsexual father? Can you imagine a time when a network station like ABC would allow a show like Ugly Betty to feature a major Transgender character and not present her as a comedic stereotype?

It is an evolving and changing world, and reality television has explored Transgender issues in ways many of us could never have imagined 10, maybe even five years ago.

The Transgender community has been the butt of jokes, the fodder for talk-show shock and awe for so long that for it to be suddenly taken seriously in a way that is empowering

scruffy bike punks with crappy day jobs and a penchant for clubbing the nights away. When Syd misses a shot of “T” and ends up pregnant, the boys have to decide what comes next.

Jay and Gen are a loving couple who use surgical procedures to express their commitment to one another. The phenomenon is called pandrogeny. Adherents undergo multiple procedures designed to make them look like their partner (in Jay and Gen’s case, that means seal noses and gold teeth).

Finally, there is Cynthia, a nurse on a journey of her own who first meets Jay and Gen at the hospital and then pursues a relationship with them.

I could make the case that there are only three main characters in the film, but that would be pretentious. However, if I were in college, I would write a 15-page paper proving that Syd/Nick is one character and Cynthia/Gen is one character, and my professor would give me an A and I’d feel really smart.

Regardless, Open follows these five people through an urban landscape that is familiar and foreign at the same time. The intra-city journey is surprising in numerous ways and will stay with you long after you leave the theater. The bodies matter, and the journey is undertaken without leaving home.

Like most small-budget independent films, there have been compromises made.

While the acting and production values (especially the sound) may be challenging, the photography and art direction look great (though Yuzna seems to like the far edges and dead center of the frame more than I’d prefer). Some of the dialogue is tortured, yet the overarching story is fascinating and well-sorted.

The real reason to see this award-winning film (Open won the Teddy Jury Award at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival) is because it does the one thing that is truly magic about the cinema: It takes us into another person’s world and makes us wonder about those experiences. Yuzna’s film most certainly accomplishes that.

Open closes Three Dollar Bill’s Translation: The Seattle Transgender Film Festival 2010. There will be one screening only on Sunday, May 16 at 7 p.m. at Northwest Film Forum (1515 12th ave.). and educational is something we should be looking at. While these images can be construed in a multitude of ways – good, bad, and in-between – there have been major strides made the likes of which kind of boggle my mind. I’m hoping that in this panel we really get the chance to talk about them, get to discuss the positives and the negatives and what all this exposure means for those contemplating the exploration of their own gender identity. So will it be important? I certainly hope so, these issues and themes are ones just about everyone, no matter what their sexual orientation or gender identity, can – and should – be able to relate to.

Ardizzone: For you, personally, what has been the most fulfilling part of being involved in the Trans film fest?

Fetters: The best part has just been watching it mature and expand over these past five years. Having been involved one way or another since its birth, seeing Translations come into its own has really filled my heart with joy.

I tend not to talk about my own gender transition when I write. As a film critic, I tend to think it doesn’t have any bearing as to whether I think something like Iron Man 2 or Letters to Juliet or Twilight is worth a viewer’s time. But who I am does have influence, and to be able to see a festival explode in popularity and quality that is so close to my heart means far more to me than I would ever normally express. To even be able to play as small a part in the festival as I am this year is hugely important to me, and anytime Three Dollar Bill Cinema wants my assistance or support for Translations, I can pretty much guarantee they’re going to get it, no matter how many mountains I have to move to give it to them.

Garofalo proves shooting Nature of Dust gives DVDs not the same as audiences a new making comedy perspective file photo

by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer Janeane Garofalo May 8 Moore Theatre Janeane Garofalo is the lefty darling whose credentials include trading barbs with Bill O’Reilly, needling Teabag Party members for being racist, and the valiant effort to answer right-wing radio with Air America Radio. She is a hero to the political left in America.

Garofalo is also a funny woman. She’s a self-deprecating comedian who famously sees the cup as half-empty – and cracked.

If you’ve never seen the film Clay Pigeons with Garofalo, Vince Vaughn, and Joaquin Phoenix, rent it today. From her constant presence in the New York comedy and performance art scenes to more mainstream roles like Janis Gold on the well-worn Fox hit 24, I have enjoyed Garofalo’s shtick from the start, especially since we came of age together.

Garofalo played two shows at Seattle’s Moore Theatre on May 8. They weren’t really shows as much as they were film shoots.

The shows were shot for a DVD to be re-

leased later this year. I make the distinction because the evening did not play out like a regular comedy show.

Looking back I was naïve to think they would shoot around the show. I mean the tickets clearly stated they were shooting a video. Still, I thought the show would run intact and they’d shoot around it. I was wrong.

I get it. This is big business and seeing the cameras working, the lights, and the equipment was fascinating in its own right. It was fun to see the director fussing over continuity issues as the camera boom swung inches over the heads of the folks in front of us.

And even if the obnoxious drunk woman who kept falling asleep paid her hard-earned cash to see a comedy show, the bean counters back at the office were expecting product.

So, I get it.

Still, is it asking too much of our star, our lefty hero, our dark purveyor of all things slightly amusing, to finish a damn joke?

Come on, Janeane, you can do it. Finish a joke already.

This is partially hyperbolic on my part.

Garofalo did finish a couple of her bits. She finished the sophomoric rant about how Natalie Portman does not shit (it‘s funny ‘cause it‘s true?).

In spite of Garofalo’s denial that she takes Adderral for ADD (she claims it simply gives her a spring in her step), she seemed to have a serious case of it from start to finish. Even her famous notebook seemed to confuse her. Maybe she should rethink the prescription.

Maybe it was my own high hopes, my own lofty expectations that sabotaged the evening for me. I was terribly excited to see Garofalo perform and maybe I was expecting too much.

In the end, the comedy was much like the shoot: a bit unorganized and haphazard, without a lot of closure. I hope the editing goes well.

Hamlin SGN A&E Writer Tell Me on a Sunday ArtsWest Through May 23 There’s so much to like about ArtsWest’s new production of the rarely staged musical Tell Me on a Sunday, by Andrew Lloyd Webber, that it seems churlish to even mention the show’s weaknesses. So, first of all, the strengths: For many years, Andrew Lloyd Webber was the hottest composer of theater musicals in London and then New York.

His early works with Tim Rice – Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita were musical milestones. After breaking with Rice, his original lyricist, he created Cats using the poetry of the deceased T. S. Eliot. Then came Phantom Of The Opera and, even later, Sunset Boulevard. A number of minor shows interrupted the string of hits, and while some were hits in London (like Starlight Express), they were not as successful in New York. Some, like Aspects of Love, were personal favorites, but did not reach a sizeable audience.

More recent musicals, the uneven The Woman in White, London’s current Love Never Dies, and the mildly received se-

quel to the smash Phantom, suggest that his peak years have passed. But to many musical theater fans, his name alone is enough to make a show a hit. This is the case with ArtsWest’s Tell Me on a Sunday.

The current one-woman musical started life as the first act of a theatrical hybrid, Song and Dance. Act One, now produced as a standalone work, was then called Song.

Act Two, a long-discarded program of contemporary dance works without vocal accompaniment, was then called Dance. London audiences loved Act One, and when the show moved to New York, Bernadette Peters won a Tony Award for Best Musical Actress. Dance was often ignored, and many in the New York audience simply skipped out and went home at intermission. Since one of the lyrics to the song “Tell

changes. Shirley gets the most support and good advice from Clara’s boyfriend, Bernie, who works at a pet shop and can help Shirley with the right foods and supplies for each animal transformation.

Pastor Ken and teacher Vivian debate what these changes mean from their opposite perspectives of religion and science.

But neither can really explain what is happening, demonstrating the limits of both perspectives to the audience. An amusing result happens when they argue each other into changing to the other’s perspective entirely.

A spare set by Etta Lilienthal includes a lovely backscreen of sky, flanking a doorway. The interior floor is a carpet of grass, continuing the living with nature theme.

Gentle lighting by Robert Aguilar helps augment the lyrical mood. The process of devolution is done with great ingenuity and Joyner’s great physical dexterity.

Solidly directed by Kathleen Collins, the five cast members are all well-fit for their parts. Harris and Joyner are adorable together as young teen crushes, and Harris is seriously earnest as he tries to support Shirley in her quest to take care of Clara. Thone brings range and depth to the role of the mother who has to grow up and evolve as her daughter becomes more and more helpless.

Beyond Clara’s form as a newt, she changes another couple of times and her life is threatened due to the changes. Shirley has to come to a terrible choice as she realizes that the only way to support her daughter is to entirely let her go. Parents, in particular, will feel that moment deeply. Take a chance on the Bliss family and experience nature.

On the Nature of Dust New Century Theatre Company Through May 30 New Century Theatre Company is presenting a world-premiere play, On the Nature of Dust, by their company playwright, Stephanie Timm. This lyrical and enchanting play has been in development for the last several years, including an intensive summer treatment through the Icicle Creek Theatre Festival in 2008, in association with ACT Theatre. Timm is best known for two prior works, Frankenocchio and Crumbs Are Also Bread. Seattle can look forward to more work from this talented, hard-working writer soon, with more workshop development in the offing.

On the Nature of Dust is a reflection about humans and their rightful place in the universe. Are we animals with imagination, or are we more than animals – something special? Timm uses a completely fanciful premise to explore this: a devolving (yes, the opposite of evolving) teenager.

Clara Bliss (Brenda Joyner) is a normal teenager with “mom” problems. Her mom, Shirley (Amy Thone), isn’t a terribly great mom. She forgets to pay the electric bill unless Clara reminds her, and loves to smoke weed. Shirley also loves men and makes no effort to hide her serial sexual appetite from her daughter. But aside from these kinds of issues, they love each other. Clara has a new boyfriend (Benjamin Harris) and likes both church and school. Her pastor (Michael Patten) and biology teacher (Betsy Schwartz) both like her a lot.

Then, one day, Clara turns into a chimpanzee. Shirley is forced to figure out how to feed her and keep her safe, until Clara turns into a giant squirrel, and then a bird, and then a newt. Me on a Sunday” uses the phrase “that same old song and dance,” the musical continued to be presented as Song and Dance, even without the second-act dance sequence. Now, confusingly, the musical is often performed as Tell Me on a Sunday, after the show’s best-known song.

Whatever its title, Webber’s one-woman show, with lyrics by Don Black and Richard Maltby, Jr., is a cult favorite. Bernadette Peters’ performance in the New York production remains a vivid memory for many, and the album remains a London and Broadway staple. It is rarely produced by a major musical theater company, like Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre or Issaquah’s Village Theatre, since it is a one-character show that runs about 90 minutes. The ArtsWest production has been eagerly anticipated since it was announced last year.

It is the final show in the 2009-10 season for the ambitious West Seattle company, and many musical theater fans will make a “must-see” visit to West Seattle for this rare chance to see a minor show by a major composer.

Frightened Rabbit’s Hutchison gets ready for Lollapalooza

Albert Rodriguez: How did the title for your new album, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, come about?

Scott Hutchison: It definitely refers literally to a winter we had. It refers to being lonely and missing places that are familiar.

We were starting to get very fed up being on the road, missing home, and feeling isolated.

Rodriguez: Being a lush, I thought it was an album of cocktail songs.

Hutchison: [Laughs.] Each one represents a different kind of drink.

Rodriguez: You should call your tour “The Summer of Mixed Drinks.”

Hutchison: Yeah, we should. I’ve been watching a lot of Mad Men and I’ve been ordering more old fashioneds and vodka martinis, so the drinking habits have changed a little – a bit classier.

Rodriguez: Do you have a favorite Mad Men character?

Hutchison: It changes from time to time.

The woman who gave us our tickets said her day was going to be fine once she got inside, because the sound check had been out of control. My date said, “Hopefully they fixed that.” The ticket woman said, “No, I meant in a good way.”

A man sitting next to us commented on the fact that the last time Rollins had been here was 15 years ago. He said the saxophonist has audiences in Europe and Japan,

so doesn’t really have to come to Seattle.

Kevin Kneistedt from KPLU, who introduced Sonny, made the point that the artist had been playing with Miles Davis when he was 18. Kneistedt said that what he himself had been doing at that age would hardly compare. The audience had to agree Sonny is the greatest living saxophonist.

We joined the standing ovation when Rollins came out on stage, even though we are disabled and don’t give those away too easily. He was joined by Bobby Brown on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on bass, Kobie Watkins on drum, Victor Y. See Yuen on percussion, and Mark Saska on piano. Each of the players was a master.

What does a band do on a day off? If you’re Frightened Rabbit, you have a barbecue right outside your bus – we’re talking bison burgers and cold brewskies. But the latest tour embarked by this Scottish quintet hasn’t been so leisurely, evidenced by their canceled Coachella appearance last month due to the volcanic ash cloud setback – even CNN and NPR tracked the group’s attempts to reach the festival grounds in time, to no avail. Fortunately, it didn’t affect the remaining dates on Frightened Rabbit’s itinerary, which includes a Seattle show this weekend, May 16, at Neumos (visit www. neumos.com for ticket info). I caught up with lead singer-guitarist Scott Hutchison in Omaha, who resides in Edinburgh when not on the road, just before he threw some burgers and tuna steaks on the grill. Here’s what the gentlemanly, polite, and thickly accented musician shared with me when he returned (in his second interview with Seattle Gay News) to “The Music Lounge.”

Rodriguez: Edinburgh has a reputation for being an open-minded city. It sounds like it has a lively, open scene with a lot of Gay bars.

Hutchison: It’s definitely very open.

There’s a really lovely part of the city where a lot of the Gay bars and restaurants are at.

It’s a nice place actually to go.

Rodriguez: Where you grew up in Scotland, was it also an environment that was open-minded and tolerant?

Hutchison: I feel like Glasgow and Edinburgh are slightly different. Edinburgh has an industrial history and working-class demographic, and Glasgow is a bit larger of a city. Edinburgh is maybe a little more laidback as far as those things are concerned. In general, I think Scotland is fairly open.

Rodriguez: Frightened Rabbit is going to Lollapalooza next month. Do you know what day you’re playing? It’s a really great lineup this year?

Hutchison: They haven’t told us yet, we’re still waiting for that. I was always a huge Soundgarden fan and never got to see them as they were before they broke up, and I’m hoping we play the same day as Soundgarden so I can finally see them play.

Rodriguez: Maybe you’ll play on the same night as Lady GaGa. Hutchison: That would make our guitar player Gordon [Skene] very happy. He’s a GaGa fanatic. He’s keeping his fingers crossed that we’ll be able to watch GaGa and her exploding tits.

Rodriguez: Do you have any favorite American cities to play in?

Hutchison: It’s fun to be in New York and the major cities, but from the perspective of the shows, often times it’s the smaller, less-visited cities that bring in the better crowds – they’re just really excited you’re there, they’re often slightly more feverish.

Places like Salt Lake City, Minneapolis, and Milwaukee were crazy. New York, Seattle, and L.A. are all spoiled for choices, as far as shows go.

Rodriguez: When you go back to Edinburgh and see friends who’ve never been to the U.S. before, or haven’t been here for a

while, what do you tell them about America?

Hutchison: I think America is a bunch of different countries in one. It can’t be summed up. It’s constantly surprising and a hard place to pin down because it changes from city to city.

Rodriguez: Back home in Scotland, do you put on a kilt for special occasions like weddings?

Hutchison: I’ve never worn a kilt in my life. I’ve always refused to do so because I don’t know if I’d feel comfortable.

Rodriguez: You wouldn’t feel comfortable because it’s a skirt or because you’d have to strip off your underwear?

Hutchison: Most do wear underwear, to be honest, but I think it would be somewhat uncomfortable. It’d be itchy.

Rodriguez: Is there anything you like

more about American girls than the ones back home in Scotland?

Hutchison: No, no, no. Absolutely not. I definitely prefer Scottish girls – one in particular, who is my girlfriend.

Rodriguez: My favorite Frightened Rabbit song remains “Old Old Fashioned.” Is that on your current set list?

Hutchison: Yeah, it would be foolish for it not to be.

Rodriguez: How many songs are you guys doing on this tour?

Hutchinson: We’re doing like a half and half set of old and new, and it’s somewhere around the 14 or 15 mark.

Rodriguez: I wanna peek inside your tour bus.

Hutchison: You will be very disappointed. It is frighteningly furnished and there is laundry everywhere.

We were surprised by the halo of white hair and white beard on top of Sonny‘s long, lean body. We looked at Rollins’ biography and figured out he was 80, so had earned the white. We were happy that he has made a point of staying healthy and was still energetic.

Sonny opened with an elegantly mellow rendition of “In a Sentimental Mood.” The pianist met his invitation to improvise with brio. The guitarist joined in.

“Patan Jali,” which followed, let us know what the ticket woman meant about the sound check. Rollins’ solo was just barely controlled pandemonium. His band was right in there with him.

“Serenade” included luscious sax and piano and an incredible drum solo. It made us want to cry.

Sonny took the mic to thank us for the welcome we gave him. He said, “I‘m not going to say anything about the gulf.” When he told us the next song was “Why Was I Born,” the man next to me said, “obviously to play sax.” That song had a nice interplay between Rollins and Yuen on congas.

“Global Warming” had a satisfying calypso beat that also gave Yuen a chance to shine, as well as nice sax and piano solos.

Sonny returned to the microphone to say,“ Keep the music alive. It is the only thing that matters.” He sang “Blues Jam” and also gave each member of his band a deli-

cious moment. We gave him another standing ovation. hoping for an encore, but had to admit the concert had been generous. We would have been worn out, if we had played sax that hard.

As my date said, “He got old on me. But he still knows how to make me happy.”

110 in the Shade Assonance has a friend who supported Seattle Musical Theater’s production of 110 in the Shade, so she and Mercy and Cuteness received some comps and went. Assonance said she should have known something was amiss when she saw no Gay men in the audience for musical theater. Sure enough, the all-straight audience (except for their party) was a bad sign. The material, a musical adaptation of the play and movie The Rainmaker, was dated. It is hard to take seriously a story where a woman’s deepest fear is becoming an old maid. Assonance said, “Now we know why it is rarely performed.”

Mercy liked remembering the movie with Katherine Hepburn, so she was a bit more forgiving than the others. Everyone agreed the voices of the leads, Jennifer Littlefield and Gregory Conn, were great. The acting was good, and the dance was fun.

Cuteness thinks some revenge is appropriate on the friend who gave them the tickets.

This may lead to an inspired gift in return.

Cuteness hasn’t decided yet what it will be.

Risky Amelia pays off for Seattle Opera

Determined to familiarize myself with the music before seeing the show, I copped a ticket to Wednesday’s dress from a donor. Now, having seen two performances and one dress rehearsal, let

me tell you of my amazing journey with this opera.

At the rehearsal, I was almost bored, despite a multi-layered story and singers who were not holding back. The music seemed bland (people who dread “modern” music have nothing to fear here!) and the story didn’t move me. But by Saturday’s opening performance, my response was completely changed. The music became interesting and quite lyrical, and the story now seemed pretty gripping. By Sunday’s matinee, I was crying three times in the second of the two acts! Call me dense, but it took me that long to get “inside” Hagen’s musical language.

What at first hearing seemed bland had become extremely moving and powerful.

The music was not difficult or unpleasant.

The orchestral texture varied from light and transparent to loud outbursts and climaxes.

Conductor Gerard Schwarz was masterful in not swamping the singers. Best of all, the vocal writing was, for the most part, wellsuited to the voices. Clearly Hagen understands singers.

Usually, my reviews are primarily about the singing. But this is Seattle Opera’s first commissioning of a new work, and that newness demands description first of all of the work itself. Suffice to say that all the singers were excellent, both in acting and singing. The exception was Nathan Gunn, who seemed to “phone in” his singing, though his attractive appearance and acting were winning. For instance, in the reading of a letter, the matinee-cast baritone, David McFerrin, far excelled Gunn in the beauty of his vocal line and thus the emotional impact of this moving scene. (In most of the other scenes, the young and very attractive McFerrin was largely inaudible, seeming so intent on his acting that he forgot to project his beautiful voice to the audience.) Standouts were William Burden, in all ways perfect for the part of an idealized father of the superb Kate Lindsey, who was sublimely beautiful and vocally and dramatically stunning as Amelia. Also impressive was the expressive and effortless soprano of debutant Ashley Emerson as the child Amelia.

The narrative takes place in different periods, starting in the mid1960s during the Vietnam war, then jumping to the mid-1990s, and then back to the mid-1980s in Vietnam

… all in the first three scenes that comprise Act One. The story is easy enough to follow, but it also takes place simultaneously on three levels: first, that of Amelia and her family; then that of an emblematic figure called “the Flier” (clearly a standin for Amelia Earhart, whose name could not be used without paying big bucks to her estate!), whose appearance both high above the stage and on ground level comments on the emotional appeal of flight and of following one’s dreams; and lastly, the father-son relationship of Daedalus and Icarus (later an anonymous father and son, critically injured in a fall). If this sounds complicated, the sets, costumes, and text (with supratitles) made it fairly easy to understand. More important, the complexity adds to the emotional resonance of each scene. In the first scene, for instance, while we experience the intense love of the child Amelia for her father, we simultaneously see Amelia’s mother receive word that her husband is missing in action. Amelia’s adult fixation on the loss of her father (and her eventual freedom from that fixation) is a major theme of the story. In life, fear is a worthwhile price to pay for taking risks, whether the risk of flying or of having a baby (“Another thing to love and lose,” as Amelia says).

Essential to the storytelling was the effective direction of Stephen Wadsworth.

There was not a false move anywhere.

The sets are impressive. They include a beautifully realized Vietnamese village scene and a most impressive airplane, whose propellers slowly die as “the Flier” runs out to gas. Also, stunning is the stylized airplane wing, upon which the “ghosts” of Amelia as a child and her dead father appear behind a scene portraying the adult Amelia’s crisis of fear for the imminent birth of her first child.

Once again, Seattle Opera has shown that it can summon the resources to do full justice to a work that deserves it. In this case, it meant going even so far as to cause its very existence! by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer Strings of the Seattle Symphony with Andrew Manze May 6 Benaroya Hall Thrills and excitement are not what I would expect from a concert of English string music. It’s one thing to find them in music that has a lot of potential for such things, but it’s quite another to get all jazzed up about British strings!

But that’s just what happened to the whole audience at this concert by the strings of the Seattle Symphony, led by the veddy British Andrew Manze (pronounced Man-zee).

Guest conductors are almost always interesting. One tends to limit one’s view of how our players perform until someone comes along who gets a response from them that blows that view away. Such was the case a couple months ago when Thomas Dausgaard led the Orchestra. Likewise with Manze and only part of the Seattle Symphony, namely the strings. With most of the SSO busy at the world premiere of Amelia at Seattle Opera, we got nine each of 1st and 2nd violins, five each of violas and celli, and four double basses. But what a sound they made!

Manze began by explaining to us how Corelli’s music could be considered British (quite a stretch!). It seems there was a spare period when British composers of merit were in such short supply that the English

rather “adopted” Corelli as their own, much as they did with Haydn and Handel. Manze’s comments before each piece could not have been more charming and, for that matter, informative. But charming narrative turned out to be the lesser of his talents.

As soon as the Corelli “Concerto grosso in C minor, Op. 6, No. 3” began, spirits took flight. Using no baton, Manze used his whole body to shape every phrase, and got such a level of response from the players that they seemed but one instrument. The music was full of lively interplay between the sections and between the quartet of lead string players and the whole orchestra. Dynamics were constantly changing without ever seeming exaggerated. In short, everything pulsed with vitality and fun, as well as soaring beauty. I have always liked Corelli’s concerti grossi, but this was something beyond what I had previously known.

Then came the big surprise of the evening: Michael Tippett’s “Fantasia Concertante on a Theme of Corelli.” I have always respected Tippett’s music, but never understood it.

Manze’s introduction, including excerpts played by the Orchestra, completely opened up the piece for me, and I enjoyed it a great deal. This is tricky music, and Manze chose to use a baton to make his beat even clearer.

With two very famous exceptions, Elgar’s music doesn’t often make it across the Atlantic. At the Edinburgh Festival one year, I discovered why: if it is any example, his huge “Dream of Gerontius” is a huge bore, so dreadful that it made me reluctant to sam-

ple more of his work. But, of course, we had Manze on our side to make Elgar work if anyone could. He led Elgar’s “Introduction and Allegro for Strings, Op. 47” with such loving attention that it more than worked; it soared. Of particular note, one noticed the warmth of the sound all evening, and especially in the Elgar. Letting the double basses sing out no doubt played a significant part in this warmth.

Before concluding the program with the lovely “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis” by Vaughan Williams, Manze led the “Hymn, ‘When rising from the bed of death’” from which it is derived. He also explained the importance of Vaughan Williams

in British culture, just in case we didn’t know him well enough to understand his music. Needless to say, the “Fantasia” was played with just the right mixture of wonder and luscious string sound. It had shape and repose, and a kind of mysterious mood that was so appropriate to the work.

Perhaps this program was too limited to judge, but I think Manze’s ability to get such response from the musicians, combined with his complete musicality should make him a desirable candidate for our future music director, should he be interested.

Contestant number two, super-cute Nathan Tran (wearing a soccer uniform and a smile), declared that he was going to “sing the best song I know how to do on Scaryoke” before launching into Daniel Beddingfield’s “If You’re Not the One.” For his second song, “This Love” by Maroon 5, Nathan went out into the audience for a sing-along session with his fans. Nathan wasn’t the best performer of the night, but you could tell he was having fun, and let’s face it: that’s what Pride Idol is all about – fun!

Contestant number three, Kristopher Zello, is a performer of the highest caliber. Kris has one of the best voices that we’ve heard this season. He absolutely nailed Simple Red’s “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” but it was his second song choice, “Why Haven’t I Heard From You” by Reba McEntire, that made Kris a stand-out performance of the night. Kris’ voice was on point and his banter with the audience, other contestants, and judges ensured that he was going to place – and place he did. When all was said and done, Kris was voted the Wild Card winner of Pride Idol, week two. We’ll see Kris on June 13 as he competes in the Wild Card Round for another chance to become Seattle’s next Pride Idol. Good luck, Kris!

Contestant number four, Elisha Anderson, blew the roof off of R Place when she channeled Aretha Franklin – not once, but twice. Within seconds of Aretha’s “Chain of Fools,” it was plain to see that singing comes naturally to Elisha. She was, without a doubt, in her element; soulful, real, and just plain good, Elisha was a pleasure to listen to. Her voice moved the other contestants to cheer her on by singing backup and providing some very interesting, choreographed on the spot dance moves. Her version of Aretha’s “Dr. Feel Good” was equally as good as the first song. Elisha did not scream Aretha, she sang Aretha – and for that, we loved her.

Special thank-yous go out to Guy Johnson (a guest judge) of the Seattle Men’s Chorus for performing “Mack the Knife” by Bobby Darin; DJ SeXXXual Chocolate for always making sure the contestants have a song (or two) to sing; Eduardo Khawam for being a

most of their music separately (versus onstage together) and they work well together as solo artists as they both have a strong independent presentation that would be lost if they played as a duo.

Most of the shows Clark and Goss play are in small, intimate settings. “Our music is, in many ways, an extremely personal part of who we are, and we connect to the audience because of that,” Clark told SGN in an earlier interview. “You don’t often get that kind of performance with touring musicians.

You have popular artists selling out arenas and concert halls and perhaps, one day, we will be those musicians. … But for now, we prefer to reach out to fans in a different way that speaks to them on a level you can’t get in stadium seating.”

The two artists invited me and everyone else in the bar to join them at their table during and between sets. Their demeanors were those of people fresh of the road: slightly exhausted, but excited and opportunistic.

Goss admitted to losing the car keys while cleaning the car at a gas station between Spokane, where they played their last show, and Seattle. “The keys must have fallen off the dashboard and into the trash I was throwing away,” said Goss. It took some doing on both Clark and Goss’s part, but the keys were found and they made it to Seattle with 30 minutes to spare before the show.

The “Big Spring Tour 2010” is an ambitious 40-city tour, however, both artists say they are living it up. Clark is planning an extensive Gay Pride tour for 2010 to support his forthcoming unnamed album and his recent single, “A History Book.” gracious and charming host; and the board and volunteers of SOaP – without whom Pride Idol would not be possible – for taking such good care of the judges and contestants. And last but certainly not least, R Place for providing the stage, bar staff, and Gay atmosphere for the competition.

At the end of the night, when the judges’ score sheets were tallied and the Verizon wireless text votes were counted, Pablo was named the winner and will advance to the finals round on June 20.

Speaking of votes … all you future contestants listen up. Bring your friends! Each week, the Wild Card and Finals Round winners are chosen by a two-vote system of judge score sheets and text votes. In other words, impress the crowd and the judges and you’ll advance. Make sure you bring your cheering squad, and after the last song is sung, they need to text their vote.

Shaun Knittel: What’s new in Hedda’s world since we last spoke?

Hedda Lettuce: I’m booked to do the next drag variety show on the LOGO channel. The last bunch had Varla Jean Merman, Jackie Beat, and Coco Peru. Finally they have booked some real talent! I am so excited just thinking about it, I just prairiedogged. Also, I am preparing for my run this summer in Provincetown. I have been summering there for the past six years; this

will be my seventh season. My show Gives Great Hedda! runs from June 29 till Labor Day. The show is full of the very best of me over the past 10 years, plus scads of new material.

Knittel: You are returning to Julia’s on Broadway and Seattle. I know everyone is happy to have you back. How would you rate your experience last winter, when you made your Emerald City debut?

Hedda: Well, it was a stellar time, except for the fact that I lost one of my diamond stud earrings. How it happened? After my sold-out show, I met this young man who seemed head-over-heels for me. We found a nice, quiet table to sit to share a few sweet glances and some tender caresses. He was spending a lot of time stroking my green mane of hair, which I didn’t think much of, until I went back to my hotel room and found that my earring was gone. I can’t say for sure that he slipped my earring off my small lobe, but I am sure of this: He must have been greatly disappointed to find out it was just glass – a fake, just like the rest of me. This time I will be more careful and I won’t wear earrings – or panties, for that matter.

Knittel: Some of our readers may not be familiar with your work. What can you tell them to expect at your May 19-20 show?

Hedda: For those of you not in the know, I am a stand-up comic first and foremost and a song stylist second. I will be premiering my new Lady Gaga parodies, which I am sure the audience will love. And if they don’t love them, I will hunt them down, beat them with my shoe until they are a bloody pulp, and then force Jackie Beat on them – now, if that doesn’t make them cower in their knock-off Pradas, I don’t know what else will.

Knittel: Gay Pride is alive and well. With celebration happening all over the world this month and next, what are you most proud of?

Hedda: I am proud of the great rack the good lord gave me, not to mention my gorgeous legs and incredible bone structure. I am a triple threat, so to speak. But on a serious note, I am glad I have not run into any of those RuPaul’s Drag Race contestants in a dark ally; they scare the living shit out of me! I think each one of them carries a blade in their wig and a gun in their purse. Okay, so that doesn’t explain why I am proud, but … maybe in a roundabout way it does. I am proud I am not embarrassing myself on national television – I embarrass myself in private or in intimate houses like Julia’s on Broadway. But let’s talk about my breasts again; they are the thing I am most proud of.

Knittel: Anything you’d like to tell your Seattle fans?

Hedda: I just want everyone to know that I love the Emerald City and I love Julia’s! I can’t wait to entertain you!

continued from cover Eric Andrews-Katz: Who inspired you to be a performer?

Harvey Fierstein: I never wanted to be a performer. I always wanted to be an artist.

My performing sort of happened. A friend’s mother started working at a community theater and asked me to make posters.

Andrews-Katz: You’re quoted as saying: “Once the Gay civil rights bills have been passed, me and mine will find ourselves swept under the carpets….” As we advance further towards that goal, do you find the groundbreaking roles to be fading?

Fierstein: You can’t attribute that to me, that was the character Arnold from my play Torch Song Trilogy. What he’s talking about is that in the early Gay marches it was the drag queens at the lead; they started Stonewall. They were the Gays that didn’t/ couldn’t hide. They get shoved aside for the ones called “normal acting.” We as a move-

ment have always had a problem with images. We do not want to accept our strengths; it’s more a perception of a gender problem.

We want to be seen as “normal,” but in the “straight” world, there is no normal, either, so it’s hard to have a role model that’s “normal.”

Andrews-Katz: You were one of two actors to ever win Tony Awards [for a musical] for playing a character of the opposite gender. What are the advantages of that?

Fierstein: I’m playing a role whether I’m playing a woman or the father of five daughters. You inhabit the role as much as you can.

It’s more fun for a role to be further away from whom you are, to make it physical and flesh it out. But it’s still the same job.

Andrews-Katz: You have been, and continue to be, an inspiration to generations of Gay people. Who do you think will be the up-and-coming inspirations?

Fierstein: I don’t know.

Andrews-Katz: What kind of aftershock did you receive from being the first person to ever thank your partner on an award show at the 1983 Tony Awards?

Fierstein: In some circles I got thanked.

In some I got slapped around a bit. It was interesting. You don’t do things for a reaction.

You live your life and you make your art.

You put it out there and how the world reacts isn’t your business. In the 12-step worlds, you are taught that what anyone thinks of you is none of your damn business.

Andrews-Katz: Being multitalented, which do you prefer: performing or writing?

Fierstein: I like doing everything.

Andrews-Katz: Do you have any films planned with the current revival of the musical La Cage Aux Folles? Will a movie be in the works?

Fierstein: You asked if I had anything planned, no.

Andrews-Katz: What do you think is the present biggest obstacle that faces a nation for Gay equality?

Fierstein: We’ve already won the big war as being seen in a civil rights way. Now we are just doing the clean-up from the battles.

It took us this many years to get this far; it’ll take us however as many years to win all the others in courts. The government doesn’t belong in anyone’s bedroom. We need to educate, educate, educate. We are part of everyone’s family. The numbers are slowly turning around, but we still need to fight where we need to fight.

Andrews-Katz: What challenges do you face playing such an iconic role as Tevye?

Fierstein: I’ve been doing the show long enough that it’s a pretty easy fit. I’m approaching my 600th performance. You know where you are going and where you’ve been, and how to get there. It’s a fabulous role with tragedy, singing, and dancing. It’s also physically and emotionally demanding.

Everything about his life is challenged by circumstance.

Andrews-Katz: What is relevant about Fiddler on the Roof today?

Fierstein: You can look at Fiddler on different levels. Tevye lives a fundamentalist life and is in a community where they believe they know what everyone’s job is. Fundamentalism (any kind) is a way of death because you don’t move forward. There is the head of your sect and the rest are followers. Tevye is like that, but circumstances in the world keep changing him, so that by the end of the show he is ready to become what we think of as “the American Jew.” It’s an interesting journey. Then there is the amount of prejudice in the world, and that is horrifying! We don’t call them “pogroms” anymore, they are “ethnic cleansings,” but murder/genocide happen on a daily basis and we seem to learn nothing of it. Fiddler reminds us of that.

Readings make good gifts!

Based on the short stories of Sholom Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of Tevye, whose life of Jewish traditions comes crashing against the transformation of modern Russia c.1905. Originally staring Zero Mostel (and Bea Arthur as Yente), Fiddler ran on Broadway for 3,242 performances, was nominated for 10 Tony Awards in 1965 and won nine, including Best Musical.
