Celebrating 35 Years!

by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer Blue Velvet Now Playing The song, along with some of the film’s more intense moments, will stay with you for some time. In this case, that’s not a terrible thing. The song, and the title of the film, is Blue Velvet. Bobby Vinton sang the song.

David Lynch directed the movie.

If you’re a fan of Blue Velvet, don’t miss your chance to see this classic on the big screen and in the company of those who share your sensibilities. It’s simply a different experience than watching at home regardless of how excessively large your expensive new TV is.

If you’ve never seen Blue Velvet, I urge you passionately to see it. It’s not an easy film to deal with. Lynch toys with you, he manipulates you, and he asks you to be involved. You are at once a voyeur and an accomplice and yet you remain frustratingly outside the often opaque narrative. It’s all cinematic slight of hand and Lynch is a master at his niche. Some find it fascinating; others are simply annoyed.

If you find Lynch annoying allow me to try to change your mind. I suspect Lynch is a bit of a one-trick pony. The secret to enjoying his films is to understand what drives his artistic vision. And what generally drives his artistic vision is fear and how fear is processed by the human mind through dreams.

Intersect this obsession with fear and fascination with dreams with theories about how memory and film are similar and dissimilar, and you will be in the center of the maelstrom that is the mind of Lynch. That is, if

I also urge you not to try to nail things down to tightly. Lynch’s work defies any sort of tidy explanation. This is because Lynch crafts scenes with expert ambiguity.

Scenes, even entire films, can easily be taken as realism or as surreal dreamscape. Solid arguments can be made for both in many instances. In 2002 I watched with unadulterated joy as a fight nearly erupted during Roger Ebert’s famed Cinema Interruptus event at the Conference on World Affairs on the University of Colorado campus as impassioned film geeks argued over Mulholland Drive.

You can let it twist you up, or you can have fun with it. I suggest that latter.

Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth is another reason to see Blue Velvet in all its perverse glory on the big screen. He is everything the heterosexual adolescent male fears. He is sexually fluid, sexually warped, sexually violent, sociopathic, unpredictable, physically imposing, and he’s lurking in your own neighborhood. Hopper resurrected his career and gave filmgoers one of the best bad guys ever to menace movie screens with this dramatic descent into pure evil.

Isabella Rossellini gives a fearless performance and nobody ever looked more gorgeous while being roughed up in a shabby apartment. Laura Dern and Kyle MacLachlan launched major film careers and veteran actor Dean Stockwell almost steals the show in a small role while reminding us that character actors do much of the heavy lifting in the movies.

Sopranos creator chronicles Hollywood The Sopranos will probably rank among TV’s greatest – even if the show’s enigmatic finale gave The L Word permission to go totally bonkers and resolution-free in its last season – so it’s exciting to hear news about a new project from David Chase, who created that mob saga for HBO. Even more thrilling is the fact that it’s a miniseries about the history of Hollywood, with fictional characters rubbing elbows with the likes of Bette Davis and D.W. Griffith. A Ribbon of Dreams explores the magic and mayhem of the movie business all the way from 1913 to the present day – which all but guarantees a healthy heaping of the Gays and Lesbians without whom Tinseltown wouldn’t even exist. No word yet on when the show will air, but Romeo is already setting his TiVo and taking odds on who’ll play Davis and other old-school Queer icons like Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich and Judy Garland.

Sandra Bernhard and friends remember Lenny Bruce You haven’t seen this many comedians in one movie since The Aristocrats, but director Elan Gale has put together an extraordinary lineup of interviewees for Looking for Lenny, a movie that explores the cultural, comic and legal legacy of the legendary Lenny Bruce. Lesbian comedy goddess Sandra Bernhard caught Romeo’s attention, but look who else is in the movie: Roseanne, Phyllis Diller, Jon Lovitz, Lewis Black, Jeffrey Ross, Christopher Titus, Lisa Lampanelli, Mort Sahl and Andy Kindler, to name a few, and that’s not even counting noncomics like Joe Mantegna and Henry Rollins. Looking for Lenny is slated for a 2009 release, so if you’re a fan of controversial comedy, start keeping an eye peeled for it at a film festival or arthouse near you.

Mischa Barton’s model behavior If America’s Next Top Model and Make Me a Supermodel have taught us anything – besides how to smile with our eyes, that is – it’s that you can’t assemble a house full of models without at least a little bit of Queer sizzle on top of the vanity, bitchiness and catfights.

So that’s why Romeo is excited about A Beautiful Life, a new CW pilot from producer (and former model) Ashton Kutcher.

The show revolves around a group of extrayoung mannequins of both sexes sharing a residence in New York City, with The O.C.’s Mischa Barton starring as a supermodel doing everything she can to stay on top of her game. Given Barton’s current off-camera job as one of GoFugYourself.com’s favorite fashion victims, it’s fitting that she’ll play a runway queen. But will she style herself for the show? Will there be rioting in the streets, Top Model audition-style, when it debuts?

Will its possible success mean the onset of the size 000? Details as they emerge.

Heathers hopes to kill on Broadway Twenty years after the theatrical release of Heathers, there hasn’t been another teen movie quite like it. Its unique combination of coal-black satirical comedy, color-coded characters and quotable dialogue has made it a Gay fave since its debut. So now get ready for a catchy tune called “I Love My Dead Gay Son,” because Heathers is headed for Broadway. Reefer Madness creators Andy Fickman and Larry O’Keefe are collaborating with Legally Blonde composer Larry O’Keefe for an all-singing, all-dancing, all-fake-teen-suicide show that’s set to open regionally in 2010, with a run slated for the Great White Way if Heathers opens successfully out of town. Monsters vs. Aliens Opening March 27 Earth is under attack! A strange being from another world known as Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson) has sent a gigantic robot to recover a meteor with mysterious properties, not caring what sort of chaos and destruction it leaves in its humongous wake.

What he doesn’t know is that this piece of space rock slammed right into perky allAmerican girl Susan Murphy (Reese Witherspoon), on her wedding day no less, and transferred its powers into her. Suddenly 49-feet-11-inches tall, kidnapped by cantankerous Army General W.R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland), held in a super-secret government compound and re-named Ginormica, she just wants to get back to her nebbish weatherman fiancé Derek Dietl (Paul Rudd) and forget any of this has otherworldly bedlam has happened.

But the president (Stephen Colbert) has other plans. He’s allowed Monger to release Susan and her fellow captives, the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D. (Hugh Laurie), the half-ape, half-fish The Missing Link (Will Arnett), the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B. (Seth Rogen) and the 350-foot grub Insectosaurus, to battle their invader. In order to regain their freedom they’re going to have to join forces and take on Gallaxhar, the fate of the planet riding on whether or not this quintet of monsters can slap this invading alien into docile submission.

DreamWorks Pictures’ latest animated adventure Monster vs. Aliens isn’t anything new or special. Happily, what it lacks in originality it more than makes up for it in entertainment value. Thanks to some splendid vocal work by its all-star cast and some

truly marvelous 3-D effects, this family epic is a definite good time. Kids and adults alike are sure to find plenty to enjoy and little to be disappointed about.

Not that there is anything spellbinding or special about any of this. Unlike last summer’s effort from the studio Kung Fu Panda, this one never quite elevates the genre in a way that’s particularly memorable. The screenplay and story (credited to six writers) is obvious in every single which way there is offering few surprises or intrigues which might give the film some sort long-lasting resonance. It’s paint-by-numbers, and while the colors used on the canvas are pretty darn extraordinary, it’s still rather difficult to get past the fact the final painting is one we’ve all seen before.

Yet, by and large, I didn’t mind any of this. The entire cast give such whimsically appealing performances (Witherspoon, Rogen and Arnett the standouts), and directors Rob Letterman (Shark Tale) and Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2) keep the action moving so assuredly, that many of the structural miscues and hiccups end up not mattering quite near as much as they probably should. By and large, this is a fun movie, the laughs and the giggles coming so frequently I almost inadvertently burped up popcorn all over my lap.

As for the 3-D, Monster vs. Aliens arguably sports some of the best I’ve seen yet.

While stop-motion marvel Coraline used it more dexterously start to finish, this one boasts a handful of moments that are so extraordinary I audibly gasped. There is fantastic montage inside the government monster compound that’s sensational, while a climactic flight through the air is as aweinspiring and wondrous as any I could ever have imagined.

It’s a word I whisper, because I think like in that movie Candyman, to say the word might make a huge, tentacled beast appear out of nowhere. Okay, that whole statement’s only partially true, and yes, I did join a huge group of goths and others in celebrating our fearful obsession at the annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival last Saturday. The festival, which is the same one that’s been held in Portland for the last several years, made a debut in Seattle last weekend, hosted

by The Grand Illusion Theater.

One of the planners thanked the theater for allowing the festival to take over the screen for not only one day, but a whole week, thus giving fans a chance to enjoy Lovecraft’s creation Cthulhu for more than one day of scary fun.

Also on hand was festival founder, Andrew Migliore, who also thanked The Grand Illusion for allowing the festival to stay longer than the original idea of one day’s showing. Then it was time for the main event: 12

short films based on H.P. Lovecraft’s dark, gothic stories, and the favorite of everyone on hand, a silent version of Lovecraft’s Call of Cthulhu (which honestly was scarier than a lot of supposed horror films I’ve seen lately).

My two favorites, Late Bloomer (about a young man’s sexual awakening via a very strange, and Lovecraftian sex ed lesson), and Legend Of The Seven Bloody Torturers showed that even material as creepy as Lovecraft’s Cthulhu stories could still be hilariously funny. Dark, but funny, too. Also shown before the eerily moody Call of Cthulhu were a very unsettling short Eel Girl and the dreamy and classic Swedish short Between The Stars, and what might have been an inspiration for the first Hellboy film, Experiment 18 (Das Hexenhammer Projeckt). I also loved the rather twisted love story Eel Girl (which has a MySpace page, so you might be able to find this one online if you look hard enough).

There was also a nifty, scary computer generated piece, The Canal by R. Corben, that showed one doesn’t need blood and gore to scare an audience silly.

Definitely a worthwhile way to spend a chilly, rainy Northwest spring afternoon, even if extra chills followed me outside after seeing this amazing array of Lovecraftian classics. For those who missed this event, you can find the vendor who sold Lovecraftthemed T-shirts and DVDs at Norwescon, Easter weekend. out the glasses and in a 2-D format? Probably not, but as I didn’t watch it that way myself I can’t really say for sure. In my opinion, though, there’s no reason to even ponder viewing it that way, as the extra dollars required for 3-D presentations are, for once, actually worth it.

As for the movie itself, Monsters vs.

Aliens isn’t an animated epic that’s going to change a person’s life or be remembered much longer than it took me to write this review. But it does entertain, sometimes spectacularly, and when so much currently sitting in the multiplex belligerently refuses to do just that, this is one gift I’m not about to return.

Tokyo Sonata: The power of unsung Japanese ennui

by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer Tokyo Sonata Opening March 27 From the opening homage to Yasujiro Ozu to the mind-bending domestic silence to the violence that invades the lives of the Sasaki family, Tokyo Sonata, by director Kiyoshi Kurosawa never fails to strike the perfect cinematic balance.

Megumi (Kyoko Koizumi) gets dumped from his corporate job – a once unheardof and shameful circumstance in a country where people traditionally work for the same company their entire lives but a circumstance faced by more and more Japanese every year. He doesn’t tell his family and begins to spend his days hanging out near the soup lines with a few other secretly unemployed executives and large numbers of not-so-secretly unemployed blue collar workers.

Kenji (Kai Inowaki) is his youngest son, who out of a blend of boredom and indignation publically humiliates his teacher and uses his lunch money to surreptitiously buy piano lessons from a beautiful divorcee who figures out that Kenji is, in fact, a musical prodigy.

Takashi (Yu Koyanagi) is Megumi’s oldest son who spends his days sleeping and his nights bumming around the streets of Tokyo. Takashi is largely silent and absent until he decides to join the American army under a fictitious new program that allows international volunteers into the United States military.

Ryuhei (Teruyuki Kagawa) is the wife and mother who passes her days keeping the façade of domestic bliss alive for the entire

family as they deal silently with the unraveling of the Japanese version of the American dream. That is until events from inside and outside the family push her to action she ends up finding empowering in ways she never dreamed of.

Kurosawa (no relation to Akira) is best known for horror films, and one could argue he’s not strayed far from his roots.

However, this horror film comes furtively tucked inside a traditional Japanese family melodrama. Even though the social forces at work are uniquely Japanese, the slow dissolution of the nuclear family will resonate with American audiences.

It isn’t just the opening sequence that gives a nod to Ozu, one of the masters of Japanese cinema. The entire film, especially the interior scenes of the Sasaki family home and the overarching themes of families coping with a changing world are direct descendents of the distinctive oeuvre of Ozu. Rent Tokyo Story before seeing Tokyo Sonata and you’ll see what I mean.

This is an excellent film that knows its place within the history of film. It reaches back to the best of its genre, is perfectly suited within its own cultural moment, and indicates one obvious path to the future of Japanese cinema.

It’s also an engaging and often surprising movie that will draw you into its world and force you to reconsider everything you think you know about Japan and ponder the power of unspoken things.

Tokyo Sonata opens Friday, March 27 at the Northwest Film Forum with shows at 7:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m.

Celebrating 35 Years!

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer The Merchant of Venice Seattle Shakespeare Company Through April 5 Shylock is Shakespeare’s most polarizing character. The character name even became embedded into common lexicon for stinginess or someone who will take advantage of you, as in “he’s a shylock.” In some ways, that ends up being code for Jewishness. Shylock is a major character in Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice, now playing at Seattle Shakespeare Company.

Shylock is a Jew whose profession is lending money. In Shakespeare’s time and much of European history, Jews were not allowed to own land or farm or do many other professions by law. Lending money and selling precious metals and jewels became a method of surviving and thriving monetarily for some. Shakespeare specifically points out these disparities in Merchant, and gives Shylock some of his most poignant poetry: If you prick us, do we not bleed?

A production must always determine an attitude toward Shylock when choosing this play, and John Langs, the director, has chosen a great actor who brings great compassion and understanding to this role, Charles Leggett. Leggett portrays the rage and anguish of a marginalized man who is publicly spat on, but then, when needed, is courted to lend money to the same detractors. Another Seattle favorite, Mark Chamberlin, plays Antonio, the rich merchant who is tapped out and needs to borrow from Shylock. Antonio has constantly made his disdain of Shylock very public.

When Antonio comes to Shylock to borrow money, Shylock makes him sign a contract that allows Shylock to take a pound of Antonio’s flesh if Antonio should fail to pay the money back in time. Shylock is determined to take Antonio’s heart. It’s a deadly

Powerful and riveting Merchant of Venice bargain, and one so extreme that it would wake up any bunch of noble audience members who have a tendency to sleep through a play.

While Langs’ production brings out the humanity in Shylock, it misses the same emphasis on the other side of the coin. Chamberlin and his “side” play their roles as if they are “regular” Shakespearean actors, without a special agenda. If their venom and disdain were called out a little more, it might even the playing field by emphasizing each side’s extreme language toward the other. Here, they are so even-tempered, even when angry, that the only extreme person is Leggett. It makes for a lopsided emotional evening.

Shakespeare has a lot of funny moments in Merchant. Even slapstick, if you will. A major element is the wooing of Portia (Klea Scott), whose rich father has set up a puzzle for any suitors to solve before she can marry them: pick a casket of gold or silver or lead and get her as a prize IF the casket you open has her picture in it. We see a number of foppish, silly suitors who fail over and over in picking the right casket. These scenes are well-played by Klea Scott and Kelly Kitchens as her maid Nerissa and Troy Fischnaller and Brian Claudio Smith as two foppish suitors. Another funny servant sidekick is played by David Goldstein, in an odd role that flouts servant conventions.

The two playlets come together in a courtroom battle over the pound of flesh, where Portia and Nerissa have disguised themselves as lawyers to judge the terms of the contract. This is a riveting scene, masterfully timed, where Scott takes control and delivers deliciously deliberate verdicts, slowly, almost at the last second. Shylock’s vengeance is overtaken and he loses everything for his rage. Leggett’s last moment is heartrending and silent, a great acting lesson for anyone learning the power of silence in theater.

There is a lot to like and respect about the production. The set design by Jennifer Zeyl is spare but ingenious, with massive pivoting doorways. Costumes are 1920s-style, by Pete Rush. There are other strong cast members contributing.

It would have been nice to have the myriad male roles more delineated by specific characters, so that some of it didn’t flatten out as much. But there were audience members happy to give a standing ovation to the cast.

A Tale of Two Cities Seattle Children’s Theatre Through April 12 A Tale of Two Cities is a timely story for right now. It speaks of financial devastation and desperation, which some of us may be feeling. Historically, it chronicles fictitiously the run-up to Bastille Day and the French Revolution. A smart, tight, finely-tuned production of an adaptation by Dwayne Hartford is currently playing at Seattle Children’s Theatre. And you probably should think twice about taking the kids.

SCT, while known to cater to children (hence the name) is one of our top professional theater companies. From time to time, SCT presents a play that is focused toward older teens, giving families a way of bridging children’s theater to adult theater for them. This production is touted to be for ages 11 and up. It uses very, very sophisticated language and it’s about a revolution, for cryin’ out loud, so yeah, there’s some violence, too.

Given all that, it’s truly a “put this on your calendar” event! Some of the top actors in town are in it, directed by Rita Giomi, a well-known local director, the beautifully realized set by Carey Wong uses every location imaginable on stage, and gorgeous costumes by Sarah Nash Gates augment the production, along with Tom Sturge’s lighting and Chris Walker’s sound.

High school “Cliffs Notes” version of plot: Dr. Manette (Philip Davidson) witnesses the unprovoked death of a man protecting his sister from a noble’s sexual advances – Marquis Evrémonde, and the woman’s subsequent death when the noble is through with her. Manette is jailed for many years to

prevent him from talking. He is rescued by his daughter, Lucie (Chelsey Rives), and rehabilitated with the help of Charles Darnay (Connor Toms), a young gallant, and Sydney Carton (Rafael Untalan), a lawyer who drinks heavily and maintains a cynical air.

They are all attended by Miss Pross (Marianne Owen), a head housekeeper sort. Darnay is concealing his familial connection to the above nobles – though he doesn’t know of the deaths – by taking a new name, since he hates how nobility has been treating the lower classes. Both Darnay and Carton fall in love with Lucie, and Lucie chooses to marry Darnay. Darnay reveals his family to Dr. Manette.

The lower classes are represented by Madame (Amy Thone) and Monsieur (Allen Galli) Defarge, barkeeps who had an association with Dr. Manette. Madame Defarge is also the sister of the dead woman and man from years back and holds a deep grudge against the Evrémonde family. When the Revolution finally begins, Madame’s revenge is to kill the entire family related to the Marquis, including Darnay and his baby with Lucie. Dr. Manette attempts to save Darnay and fails. Darnay is scheduled for the guillotine. Carton has continued to worship Lucie from afar and determines to save Darnay for her. He substitutes himself secretly and gets Darnay away, even though he knows he faces certain death, the ultimate sacrifice. Happy ending. Well, sort of.

Dwayne Hartford script creates a wonderful almost-love story between Lucie and Carton, and Untalan is utterly charming as he reveals Carton’s human frailty and his desire for Lucie’s love. Rives has that quiet, composed beauty needed to attract men’s desires, and their holding of her in high esteem. She makes a believer of the audience

that both of these men would love her desperately. Thone is marvelous as Madame Defarge, even knitting for real on stage, and turning from righteous citizen to bloodthirsty revengemonger. Other cast members in multiple roles, including Darrah Kennan, Peter A. Jacobs and David Quicksall give a huge boost to the production. There is not a weak link in the lot.

Playwright Hartford, reached at his home company, Child’s Play, in Arizona, explains that he began this adaptation in a writing course, after reading it in high school and keeping it in his thoughts for years, and Child’s Play then commissioned the entire work. “What is important about it is that it speaks to us, today. There is wealth and power for only a few people, and a lot of poverty out there and that danger [revolution] exists, and the danger of figuring out the difference between justice and vengeance. Also, I was intrigued by the Sydney Carton story, the person lost and [then] finding purpose in his life.”

There were certain key subplots that people familiar with the book might miss.

“When you go from a novel to a play, you have to weed out subplots and story lines in order to streamline the play. I had to lose some wonderful characters. In the quest to tell this story, that was my biggest chal-

lenge: how best to tell the story as clearly and dramatically as I could. People might miss a major character in the book called Jerry Cruncher; a fun plot, but in the name of dramatic clarity, it made sense for him to go away.”

Hartford doesn’t appreciate when stories are “dumbed down” for high schoolers. “I’m a firm believer in the intelligence of young people and their ability to grasp concepts adults sometimes think they can’t handle.

Vocabulary in a story like this, I don’t worry about that for high school audiences.”

Hartford was able to see the SCT production. “I was impressed with the production end of things and taken with the quality of the acting and directing. I felt they nailed my intent and I was very pleased.”

Giomi keeps a firm hand, even on chaotic crowd scenes and fight sequences. While most children’s plays tend to be shorter, this one comes in around two hours, but the time flies by. If you trust your family is fine with high-falutin’ language and stage violence, it’s a great opportunity to watch the story, then maybe get the book for a family readaloud. If you don’t have kids, but love great period theater, then get over to SCT, because this production is shorter than some of their runs. The series started 10 years ago in Portland, partly in response to school budget cuts for music education. The Snowman Foundation, founded and led by Michael Allen Harrison, has raised more than $2 million in its decade in Portland. The program added Seattle to its calendar last year and returns this year, and, hopefully, for many more.

Eight of last year’s pianists return this year, including Harrison. The program consists of solo selections, various duets and other combinations, and full, massed works utilizing all 10 grand pianos at one time. The program offers classical, jazz, blues, gospel, boogie-woogie, pop, contemporary and new age. Sounds incredible.

manager of Club ZinZanni, has his hands full with the love-crazed wait staff and his big-hearted, extravagant but lonely boss, Ricky. Ricky may be very, very short but he has a full and lonely heart. To add complications, Ricky has invited a traveling troupe of gypsies to stop by the club this night. As ZinZanni declares, “Love, Chaos & Dinner” results – on stage and in the audience. Nathalie Tarlet, an original ZinZanni cast member (as Juliette, the fondly remembered impish kitchen waif) moves backstage this time and takes on the complex role of director.

As usual, the audience enjoys a delightful, five-course dinner before, during and after the ZinZanni show. Tom Douglas, awardwinning Northwest chef, has designed another wonderful menu for ZinZanni fans.

The feast starts with appetizers – buttered smoked trout on toast (with a “medley of marjoram” tossed in) and marinated olives and almonds (“tossed lightly in lavender oil and orange zest”). Carrot and ginger soup follows (“with a dollop of coriander cream”) and then a triple composed salad (that’s ZinZanni talk for three ingredients – greens, cucumber and pickled red cabbage) with a mustard vinaigrette dressing.

TEATRO ZINZANNI PRESENTS UNDER THE GYPSY MOON THROUGH JUNE 21 The zanies at Teatro ZinZanni are back at it. The new edition of the long running dinner/theater/cabaret show, Under the Gypsy Moon, is bringing crowds back to the historic spiegeltent, a portable European cabaret tent, at the Seattle Center. The new edition runs through June 21 and follows in a long line of successful, crowd-pleasing ZinZanni shows.

Duffy Bishop, a ZinZanni regular for the past decade, takes center stage as Zara, The Gypsy Queen. While this version of the popular show has no Madam ZinZanni, Zara takes on that role in Gypsy format.

Bishop, a modern day Janis Joplin, belts out the blues with the best of ‘em, and her husband, Chris Carlson, provides solid support as the guitarist with The Orchestra DeVille at ZinZanni. He, of course, is a mainstay with The Duffy Bishop Band which makes its home in Portland most of the year. Geoff Hoyle, “New Vaudeville’s Crown Prince,” is co-star of the current edition.

Our attentive wait staff gladly honored the request to substitute the Yukon gold mashed potatoes from the steak selection. ZinZanni cannot always honor individual requests – but the staff sure tries. A woman at the end of the table, celebrating a special anniversary with her husband, raved about the vegetarian selection – a mushroom strata, “a medley of mushroom, cauliflower, chard and Beecher’s flagship cheese in a savory custard.”

Crisp green beans accompanied each selection. Dessert, a lemony meringue of tropical lemon curd in a classic shortbread crust, was an all-around smash hit. Many in the ZinZanni cast, always in character, join the wait staff to serve each course – often adding bits of comedy from their stage center spotlights.

Highlight after highlight – most of them indescribable – follow in rapid sequence in the center stage performance ring. Bad jokes (“Treat everyday as your last – one day you’ll be right!”), bad puns (“Are you ready for super sex?” “I’ll take the soup!”),

Dana Johnson, a Seattle Opera regular, gets some incredible solo moments with opera highlights – one, of course, from the Gypsythemed Carmen. The Duo Madrona (“biologists by day, trapeze artists by night!”) make their ZinZanni debut with the new show.

New York’s Geoff Hoyle, well known to Seattle theater fans from his work at the Seattle Rep and other local theaters, is a comic delight in three roles. As usual, his outing in drag – as a proper British housewife – earned his biggest laughs. Audience involvement is a trademark of ZinZanni – the talented cast is always on the lookout for “victims” to join the zanies on stage. A musical interlude invited audience members to dance “with someone you love.” A Lesbian couple near our table took up the offer gladly and ended their dance with a sweet, full kiss on the lips. No one noticed – a welcome sign of the times as well as a reflection of the ZinZanni atmosphere of “anything goes.”

At the end of three hours, with dessert a happy memory, a lavish Gypsy wedding ends the evening. A purple and lavender costume fantasy – complete with feathers and sequins – remains in the memory weeks later, a single ZinZanni symbol of the kaleidoscopic evening of romance, crazed comedy and a wonderful dinner. The evening ended with Duffy Bishop belting out “Put A Little Love In Your Heart.”

Tickets are expensive, starting at $104 a person, but ZinZanni, recognizing “these troubled economic times,” has had some discounts available for select audiences. A January “Lion Tamer’s Discount,” a one-night trial event, was a huge success, and ZinZanni is considering other events in the future. It never hurts to ask.

Group discounts, as always, often lower the individual ticket price remarkably. It is a one-of-a-kind special night of dinner and entertainment. Every person at Bits&Bytes’ table loved the show and thought it was “well worth the money.” Check it out....

The “March Is Cabaret Month” has had its share of highlights and near disasters. Snow (in March!) prevented a guest artist from Ellensburg from crossing the pass two weeks ago. Earlier snow warnings – and some real snow flurries – kept audience attendance at “an intimate level” in the opening weeks, but last Sunday’s show was a virtual sell out.

JAZZ ALLEY NEWS: DAVE FRISHBERG PLAYS TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY One of the true cult figures in the cabaret/ songwriting field has to be Dave Frishberg, a Portland resident since 1986. He makes a rare Seattle appearance next Tuesday and Wednesday at Jazz Alley.

As a songwriter, Frishberg has created many of the cult favorites of internationally acclaimed performers. Blossom Deary, Mel Torme, Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, Diana Krall, Tony Bennett, Bette Midler have all recorded Frishberg classics like “Peel Me A Grape,” “I’m Hip” and “My Attorney Bernie.” He performs regularly in Portland and in music clubs in other major cities and records for various jazz labels. His Seattle appearances are “musts” for cabaret and jazz fans.

So many shows, not enough outfits – which is why I’ve listed the 10 biggest and coolest live performances taking place in or around Seattle through the end of summer. There are dozens of concerts yet to be announced in the coming weeks, but here’s what I recommend putting on your calendar right now.

Bubblegum trio Jonas Brothers, known in some circles as Jo Bros, are taking their act on the road this summer for a series of arena performances that lands at the Tacoma Dome on the final night of Pride (convenient, right?). The real-life pop siblings emerged rapidly on the music scene via the Magic Kingdom, but unlike fellow tween stars (you listening, Miley?), they actually write their own material and perform it with (gasp) talent – yes, these boys appear to be no flash in the pan. Nick, Kevin, and Joe will release their fourth album in 2009, titled Lines, Vines and Trying Times, and I expect they’ll usher out songs from it at the Tacoma Dome.

side to pay my respects. Thus, the flawless, exciting performance we heard of Stravinsky’s ‘Violin Concerto in D major’ (1961 revision) sent me into orbit. The smaller orchestra and the master’s brilliant orchestration made the most of every rhythmic witticism, with the effect of making it all dance with life. Lithuanian-born violinist Julian Rachlin made it look like fun. Coordination with the players was perfect, and every detail could be heard.

With two such challenging works in the first half, I thought surely there couldn’t have been enough rehearsal time left to mold a great performance of Berlioz’ ‘Symphonie fantastique.’ Wrong! Conducting without a score, Slatkin pulled both subtleties and dramatic effects from the huge orchestra (TWO tubas, two sets of tympani, and two bass drums!). Again, the players seemed totally connected to the conductor’s intentions; each section seemed to know exactly what story they were telling. The astounding genius of the young Berlioz, only three years after Beethoven’s death and six years after Beethoven’s 9th symphony, made Benaroya Hall resound with drama and excitement.

The sonic textures were a totally new world, an apotheosis of budding romanticism, and Slatkin milked it for all it was worth. From the quiet, beautiful lyricism of Ben Hausmann’s oboe solos to the thundering “March to the Scaffold,” everything came across with maximum effect.

One can only hope that the SSO finds such a man as Slatkin when they search for a new music director at the end of the current regime!

The Seattle Symphony with violinist Julian Rachlin March 21 Benaroya Hall Guest conductors to the Seattle Symphony Orchestra tend to make our regular bandmaster look bad. Never has that been more the case than with last week’s visit by conductor Leonard Slatkin. That the players loved working with him was evident in every note. The overall effect in all three works on the program was stupendous.

‘The Four Sea Interludes’ from Benjamin Britten’s opera, Peter Grimes are brilliant, to be sure. But one does not expect them to be such a rich meal as what we heard under Slatkin’s precise baton. Perhaps the emotional impact of these gems is somewhat dependent upon having seen the opera. At any rate, having seen it live twice, I was overwhelmed by how totally effective this performance was in every detail. Slatkin’s control of dynamics and balances was way beyond what we usually hear from the SSO. They players seemed totally involved in carrying out the slightest indication from this conductor’s gestures. I felt directly connected to Britten and to the feelings he was trying to evoke. This was musical magic, well worth the price of admission all by itself.

As a student at Columbia College, I regarded Igor Stravinsky as one of my chief gods. George Balanchine was creating great Stravinsky ballets 12 minutes’ subway ride down Broadway from my dorm, and Columbia Records was releasing iconic recordings of Stravinsky’s works. As if the six Brandenburg Concerti played by the Academy of Ancient Music weren’t enough glorious Baroque for the Pacific Northwest in one week, we also were treated to none other than the English Concert, with the incomparable countertenor David Daniels, at the Chan Centre at UBC in Vancouver, BC. Both concerts left little to be desired.

“Founded by Christopher Hogwood in 1973, the Academy of Ancient Music (AAM) is one of the world’s first and foremost period-instrument orchestras.” Such program notes do not exaggerate. Richard Egarr, who played the harpsichord and conducted at Benaroya Hall, took over from Hogwood in 2006. Egarr was dynamic in performance and most engaging in his comments between the concerti.

The AAM consists of almost two dozen players, but in this concert, each part was most often played by only one musician.

Thus, for the first of the Brandenburgs we saw a very small orchestra: three oboes, a pair of horns (valveless, of course), a few strings, and a “violino piccolo,” a tiny violin no longer used in modern orchestras.

The result of one player to a part is a very naked, ultra-transparent ensemble, giving a rather raucous sound, compared to the smoother texture of a large orchestra. This rough openness was especially appropriate in the opening movement, where the horn players made mischief with some nasal flourishes against the contrasting rhythms of the first oboe. The effect was festive, to say the least.

The largest ensemble came with the great fifth concerto in D-major, most notable for

the amazing harpsichord cadenza that caps the lively first movement. Having been raised on a particularly powerful performance by Robert Veyron-Lacroix (a Westminster LP), I was shocked by the MANY tempi taken by Egarr in this extended cadenza. He changed tempi every few seconds, giving the impression of great playfulness and vitality, but for me, ruining the tremendous build-up achieved by Bach’s own gradations over a constant tempo. To each his own!

Benaroya is certainly, as noted by Egarr, a rather large hall for such music. This was not the case the following Sunday at The Chan Centre on the UBC campus in Vancouver, BC. If the AAM concert at Benaroya was immensely satisfying, the program at the Chan by the English Concert with David Daniels was absolutely thrilling. The intimate setting, the incredibly tight yet lively ensemble of the English Concert, and the extraordinary artistry of Daniels made it all unforgettably vivid and exciting. Six hours of driving plus border crossings seemed, to this 71-year-old, like nothing to pay for such a dividend.

After a marvelous reading of Bach’s ‘Suite No. 1 in C major,’ a trimmed down David Daniels walked on stage to sing “Vergnügte Ruh” from the ‘Cantata No. 170.’ Having heard Daniels in the same venue in 2001, I can attest that everything about him has improved with age. That earlier recital was also unforgettable but a bit uneven in effectiveness. This time, absolutely every minute made its mark. The sharp precision with which the singer etched the vocal line put me in mind of an X-Acto knife! The voice showed absolutely no signs of wear and tear from his many appearances in big venues such as the Metropolitan Opera. His shimmering vibrato was a beautiful as ever. Most of all, his artistry, always outstanding, was even more telling.

“Qui sedes” from the ‘Mass in B minor’ followed. Bach’s genius in instrumental writing, combined with the exquisite playing on reproductions of early instruments, made the union with Daniels’ voice downright magical. At moments when the voice was only an interval of a second from the

oboes, Daniels sang in a perfect straight tone to make that dissonance absolutely clear and delicious.

After an instrumental “Sinfonia” from Bach’s ‘Cantata No. 42,’ Daniels sang “Schlummert ein” from the Cantata No. 82, ‘Ich habe genug.’ Lying low in the voice, this aria showed that this singer has no problem projecting his lower voice. But the highlight of the whole afternoon came next: “Erbarme dich” from the ‘St. Matthew Passion.’

First violinist Jadja Zwiener made magical tracery of the exquisite violin solo, with which Daniels’ perfect lines intertwined in one of those sublime moments you wish you could take home with you. (Actually, you can, since these same forces have recorded most of this program, one CD of Bach and another of Handel.)

The second half was devoted to works of the more operatic George Frideric Handel.

Here Daniels showed he has not lost his skill at fast coloratura. But more importantly he wowed with the dramatic intensity of his delivery. He sang “Ombra cara” from Radamisto, “Furibondo” from Partenope, and

the “Mad Scene” from Orlando. He also rewarded the enthusiasm of the audience with an encore: an aria from Act 3 of Handel’s Radamisto.

For lack of space, I have slighted the contribution of Harry Bicket and The English Concert. Although Daniels was clearly the “star” of the program, this ensemble cannot be bested on any score.

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer Just watched our very adorable prez on 60 Minutes earlier and I have to say, even though the rest of the country (or some folks) has ended the “honeymoon period” with Mr. Obama, I still feel the glow. I mean, how can you not believe in a guy who’s still wowed that he’s living in “pretty cool digs” (his words for his White House home to the commentator asking him questions on 60 Minutes)? True, he is still learning how to be president, but hey, I think we could give him a chance and he’d surprise us all, and, FYI, even though I hate, hate, hate war (some of this one’s dearest ones have been over and some other might be leaving soon), I think Obama’s strategy for Afghanistan is sound judgment. Hey, if you’re going to do a heinous job, at least make sure you get it right the first time.

And to a certain Mr. Charles Krauthammer, slow yo’ roll and back up off the prez (even if I did sort of agree with your last commentary on the whole stem cell thang).

So, what else has this one been up to besides thinking well of our new prez? Well, just so you know I’m not looking fondly on yet another famous Leo, and that I’ve no life beyond that, ah, my lovelies, that ain’t so.

No, this one burned up the sheets yet again with our new love/lust object after seeing a much more palatable film than our last sor-

tie to see Last House on the Left (which this one wouldn’t wish on her worst enemy).

And yes, Venus being retrograde is having an effect on that relationship, but not nearly as horrid as the last time that molten planet interfered in human affairs of the heart. No, this time we have not only that delish Scorpio, but a devoted slave (just finished off one of the bon bons that one gave me as a tribute after our latest play, which was pretty intense, let me tell you, my sweeties). Also did some writhing around in happiness at The Wet Spot last Saturday with yet another “adoring fan” who also made me laugh.

Kenny Rankin Mercy Moosemuzzle and her friend Destiny Galvino enjoyed Kenny Rankin’s show at Jazz Alley very much. Rankin had opened for George Carlin for years, so started his own set with a comic story in his dead friend’s honor. He continued with pleasing variations on Bob Dylan’s “Tambourine Man.” Kenny then gave a lot of life to his own song, “Tomorrow Morning.” Johnny Mathis’s “When Sunny Gets Blue” also stood out. Rankin talked about having met Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock and then playing guitar with him for awhile. He sang Hendrix’ “I Just Want To Talk to You,” and “Say Anything” with verve. The singer sang “Blackbird,” saying that song had been good to him. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was sweet and soulful.

Rankin continued with a medley of “Time and Love,” “Funny Valentine,” “Penny Lane,” and “Why Do Fools Fall in Love” that rocked nicely. He did a good interpretation of his own song, “Oh So Peaceful Here,” which he had written as a lullaby for his children in 1963. He joked that that song had taken him from total obscurity to relative unknown. Kenny did a bluesy version of “On Broadway” that worked well.

He said that song was an ode to the neighborhood he had grown up in, Washington Heights. The singer says he is about to go into the studio to record his first CD in nine years. Mercy and Destiny agreed it was overdue. They found his show very warmhearted Rankin calls his guitar Honey and says he bought it for $250 43 years ago. Destiny said she thought he might have been able to have a better sound with something newer

Marcia Ball Mercy and Cuteness ate up Marcia Ball’s performance at the Triple Door. Cuteness liked the fact that Ball wore red high heels, crossed her legs at the piano and bounced her feet to her incredible rhythm. One of the high points was Ball’s song, “Red Beans and Rice,” which made Mercy and Cuteness hungry for more. Likewise, her songs “Peace, Love and BBQ,” “Tupelo Louisiana” and “Everybody Party Tonight” rocked out. The singer/pianist gave nice soul to “The House of Love.” She gave a lot of blues to the song she and Tracy Nelson had written about the survivors of Katrina, “Where do You Go When There’s No Place to Go?” Ball followed with Bobby Charles’ song, “Party Town,” which she called the definitive song about New Orleans now, because, “Just when you think the party’s ending, another’s just begun.” Ball sang her own song, “Riding it Out,” about people who stay when a hurricane is coming. It was a perfectly apt musical description. “Down the Road” was an upbeat finish. Ball said it was about Baptists crossing the county line and acting like Catholics.

Ball was accompanied by Thad Scott on a fabulous sax. Don Bennett’s bass was nice.

Andrew Nafziger’s guitar rocked, Corey Keller’s drums were hot. Nafziger brought out a cake, saying that day was Ball’s birthday. When Mercy did some more research, she came to the conclusion that it was the performer’s 60th birthday. Marcia had used the occasion as a fundraiser and raised a lot of money for the Austin Free Clinic. Cuteness thought Ball looked good for 60. In fact, that she looked good for 55, which Cuteness had turned the day before. Mercy

Branford Marsalis Mercy and her friend Mischief Basketball had a good time listening to the Branford Marsalis band, at Jazz Alley. Marsalis had an open manner onstage. He switched back and forth between sax and clarinet, giving good voice to both. He said young prodigy drummer, Jeff Watts, suggested they play “Take the Coltrane,” which they did delightfully. “The Last Goodbye,” by the band’s pianist, Joey Calderazzo, had nice depth.

“Sphere” was wild. Mercy found Marsalis’ variations on a theme of Richard Wagner’s “Fate” satisfying.

“Return of the Gitney Man” was hot.

Hoagey Carmichael’s “Stardust” was smooth. Clarence Robinson sat in on drums for “Rhythming” and gave a nice solo. W.

Beyoncé Knowles, who drops the surname on the music circuit and recently adopted the alter ego Sasha Fierce, has become the most prominent female black entertainer of the century – venturing into film, television commercials, and glossy magazine advertisements. Highly visible appearances on the Grammy Awards, Oscars and Kennedy Center Honors telecasts has assisted in boosting the young beauty’s exposure – her soaring tribute to Barbara Streisand at last year’s Kennedy gala was a big wow. Truth be told, Beyoncé is the whole package: a classy, attractive, talented woman with a pair of legs that won’t stop and a set of pipes that can ignite a sultry dance number or cradle a delicate ballad – in other words, this diva has range and uses it to her advantage.

The only mishaps in the Houston native’s standout career have been minor, a facefront tumble while performing in Orlando several months ago (see it on YouTube, it’s hysterical – she ate those stairs!) and a

Mischief raised the question whether the band was new, because they seemed not to know each other well. Mercy wasn’t sure, but enjoyed watching the interactions among the musicians.

La Sonnambula Mercy, Cuteness and Assonance found the HD broadcast of the Met’s La Sonnambula satisfying. The singing by Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Flores in the principal roles was exciting. Jane Bunnell’s performance as the mother was also good. Assonance said it was a good thing Bellini’s music was so beautiful, since the plot is unlikely. Beyoncé has welcomed fame only to her professional life, a huge reason why we know only bits and pieces of her personal one. Beyoncé makes her Seattle debut as a solo performer Wednesday at Key Arena, and she’ll light that place up like a Rockefeller holiday tree. I haven’t seen the set list for the show, but I do know she isn’t opposed to opening her performances with “Crazy in Love,” so arrive on time to avoid missing it.

Expect to hear booty-bouncing versions of “Irreplaceable,” “If I Were a Boy,” “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” and “Diva,” an experimental track in which Beyoncé pushes her own R&B envelope. Also, you’ll likely get a good dose of Destiny’s Child favorites like “Survivor,” “Say My Name” and “Soldier.” The audience will be a diverse bunch of folks, and within the thousands of attendees you’ll come across two similar camps of peeps, Diesel-wearing Gay boys and finely-manicured black women – individually they’re party animals, together they’ll turn Key Arena into an unstoppable zoo.

Subduing Demons in America: Selected Poems 1962-2007, John Giorno edited by Marcus Boon (Soft Skull Press, $19.95) As wonderful as it is to have this wellcurated, career-spanning collection of Giorno’s explosive poetry bound into book form, do yourself a favor: listen to him read (if you haven’t experienced a performance in person) before delving too deeply into the text; MP3s are easy to find online.

Then, with the indelible aural impact of Giorno’s percussive voice echoing in the background, the formal minimalism and confessional nihilism of his playful profundities assume extra depth and added dimension. Sex, violence, despair, drugs and dharma – he hosts teachings in the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhism – mark much of Giorno’s writing, which is influenced by almost everything avant-garde of the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and beyond: the outlaw prose of Ginsberg and Burroughs, the Pop artistry of Warhol and Rauschenberg, and the punk/ new wave sounds of Throbbing Gristle and Black Flag. Boon’s lengthy and illuminatcally great cocksucker, his enthusiasm more than made up for that.”
