2010 SOAP PRIDE IDOL R PLACE SUNDAYS THROUGH JUNE 20 Welcome back, Seattle Pride Idol fans! This week’s competition, round five, had six contestants competing for the chance to become the next Seattle Out and Proud (SOaP) 2010 Pride Idol.

This week, familiar Pride Idol judges Andrew Miller and yours truly were joined by Sister VixXxen (sitting in for our fellow partner-in-crime, Sister Domine Trix), who schooled the audience on the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, one of Seattle’s most beloved organizations (the sisters rock!).

It seemed appropriate that the competition’s title contains the word “idol.” Round five saw three well-known, legendary Seattle drag idols. The iconic Mark “Mom” Finley performed two songs (opening and closing the show) in the style that made Finley a drag

An Evening with Shirley MacLaine June 13 at 7 PM Benaroya Hall From the moment Ms. Shirley MacLaine picked up the phone, she proved herself not only a true professional, but a genuine, down-to-earth soul, as well. That shouldn’t be surprising. Despite her flash on Broadway, her feature film debut was for Alfred Hitchcock, which started off a long line of Hollywood films. Her views on traveling, politics, and spiritual beliefs have become synonymous with her name. Sara Michelle Fetters: As I was watching the film, I couldn’t help but wonder if 30 years ago, when you were both just starting out, you could ever have imagined you’d be where you are now. Did this sort of stardom, this sort of fame, did the possibility of it even remotely cross either of your minds?

Linda Topp: Not really. Not really at all, because we grew up on a dairy farm and when we left home we ended up in the Army for a little bit, so we never really planned a career as entertainers.

Jools Topp: We’ve made a lot of conscious decisions along the way – let’s try this, let’s do this. And the other thing is, too, when you live in New Zealand, you have to create your own stuff; you’re not living in Hollywood and it’s not all out there in front

As the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) has progressed, one of the major unexpected delights has been the New Zealand music documentary The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls. A pure burst of inspiration, this movie presents celebrities Jools and Linda Topp in all their comedic, yodeling, Lesbian, country-music-singing glory. For over 30 years, these two icons have busted any and all conventions while expanding their gigantic international fan base, while not once pulling their punches or bowing to pressure to keep their political and social opinions to themselves.

Here to present their film to SIFF audiences, I got the opportunity to sit down with the Topp twins to talk about the documentary, the state of LGBT rights in the United States and whatever else might have been on the pair’s minds.

Here are some of the highlights from that conversation.

Beautiful Darling: The Life and Times of Candy Darling the Andy Warhol Superstar Rating: Very Good Documentary USA June 13, 6:15 p.m., SIFF Cinema This documentary profiles Candy Darling, a Transsexual who starred in several Andy Warhol films in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s before her tragically young death. Capturing the intricacies of an era long since passed, this film uses archival footage of Darling as well as many others from Warhol’s films, and adds contemporary interviews with many of those who knew her to recreate her interesting life. It is a fascinating look back at the personal life of this early Transsexual pioneer, the implications of living openly at 28 Seattle Gay News

the time, and is yet another confirmation of Warhol’s exploitation of others for his personal gain.

Blessed Rating: Excellent Drama Australia June 4, 6:30 p.m., Pacific Place June 5, 4 p.m., Pacific Place Dysfunctional family dynamics abound in this unique SIFF entry, which encompasses a 24-hour time period in the lives of the characters, divided into two distinct segments. The first part explores the experiences through the eyes of the children from these families, while the second half profiles the same time period through the eyes of each of their mothers. Set in Melbourne, every scenario and family suffers from serious issues of dysfunctional family dynamics.

Nonetheless, while not particularly pleasant – in fact, it has a downright depressing plot overall – it is nonetheless a very creatively produced and well-acted film which realistically portrays the lives of the characters as well as tying all of their lives together throughout the story.

Gordos Rating: Outstanding

Romantic Comedy Spain – Subtitled June 4, 11 a.m., Pacific Place June 7, 9:20 p.m., Uptown Five individuals (a therapist and four clients) who meet in group therapy for overweight people seeking to change their lives end up having their lives turned upsidedown. The four include a police forensic expert with a fat wife and daughter but a skinny son, a diet pill infomercial celebrity who is Gay and is facing financial ruin for his weight gain, a sexually repressed religious cult member whose thin future husband disapproves of her participation, a very successful businesswoman who is gaining weight out of sexual and emotional frustration while her boyfriend works in the U.S., and the thin therapist who is personally revolted by his wife’s weight gain during her pregnancy. What makes this film remarkable is not only the clever and complex plot and the interrelationships of the characters, but the cynical humor and sequencing of the storylines of the experiences of the secondary characters. It is woven together in a uniquely interesting and realistic yet comedic way that incorporates modern stylish cinematography, and is another demonstration of the coming-of-age of Spanish filmmaking. This is a SIFF entry not to be missed!

around and someone will yell out, ‘G’day, Ken!’ even if I’m dressed as myself. But that’ll be there vision of me, their vision of me as Ken. They love Ken. That’s their character.

Fetters: But how do you stay so passionate? More than that, how do you make sure the audience is feeling that passion during one of your concerts or performances?

Linda Topp: We send things up rather than put things down. … When we started out, we had this motto: amuse but never abuse. And that has always been our way.

Our way in how we approach our form of entertainment, especially in regards to comedy.

Fetters: I love that you say “amuse but don’t abuse,” because when you watch the portion of the film where you’re working on overturning the anti-sodomy laws and fighting for Gay rights, the juxtaposition between your being so accepting and warm to those standing against you while they’re spewing so much venom and hatred is quite remarkable. Is any of that transferable? In the wake of things like Proposition 8 in California and other ongoing battles here in the United States, why can’t we learn from your successes in New Zealand?

Linda Topp: It’s all about being defensive. When you take it personally, it can’t work. We were talking about this yesterday, actually. Nothing is personal. In this whole world, nothing is personal. It’s a big statement, but it’s really important.

Jools Topp: But take some sort of action.

Don’t take it personally, but get activated – let your opinion be heard.

Linda Topp: Enable yourself. You have to fill up the well before you can give anyone else a drink of water. So like, for us, as artists, we said to ourselves that we had to come out. Someone’s going to ask someday if we were married with children, and what would the answer be? Gibberish. We’d be clucking like chickens. So if we come out, then we’re going to be saying no, of course not.

Jools Topp: And people do get weird.

For a time there, people thought Linda and I were together and I’d look at them [quizzically] and ask, ‘Are you weird?’ After all, Gay people have morals, too, don’t you know.

Linda Topp: Yeah, so because of stuff like that, we’re educating people in some sort of way. We’re all human. If I bang my hand, it hurts, and if I cut my finger, it bleeds – just like everyone else – so let’s just get real for a second. You have to treat everyone with respect and with honesty, and if you do, that’s how dialogue can happen. ing, apparently, Argentina. Leo is a graduate student at college who cannot perform with his girlfriend. She becomes tired of his inability to get excited during sex and dumps him. He then decides to go to therapy and he befriends a seriously depressed girl from elementary school, who he comes across years later while secretly exploring his sexual desire for men. What is unique about this film is its realism coupled with the strong character portrayals by the entire cast, and a fairly simple plot about a young man’s attempt to come to grips with who he is while being very fearful and cognizant of the social stigma of being Gay in his society.

It really is an amazing film coming out of Argentina, so it is another example of how lucky we are to be able to view such cinema through SIFF.

Marwencol Rating: Good Documentary USA At 38 years of age, Mark Hogencamp was brutally beaten one night after leaving a bar in Kingston, NY, leaving him in a coma and resulting in significant brain damage. Hogencamp cannot recall most of the events from his life before the assault.

As he recovered, he began to dress and stage GI Joe, Barbie, and other similar dolls into scenes created in his own imagination set in a fictional WWII era European village of Leo’s Room Marwencol, which he built and set up in his Rating: Very Good backyard. Celebrating 37 Years!

visits with Annie’s best friend Jessica and her husband of a year, William. Annie and Vince had attended their Parisian wedding and Vince wants to see if Jessica thinks Annie should stay with Vince. Jessica has some surprising and life-altering information for Vince. It also turns out that Jessica’s and William’s great marriage has some hugely unique challenges. These revelations add to the complicated struggle about what love is really about.

This play is a wonderful combination of the old and the new. Frank Lawler, as the grandfather, brings the perfect feeling of old-world charm to the role in one of his sweetest performances.

He’s matched by a quiet beauty as Candace Vance demonstrates the grandmother’s love, as they revisit their first meeting and their last day together. Trick Danneker and Emily Chisholm as Vince and Annie are the complete modern couple, feeling like everything has been remade in this high-tech world, so maybe their love is not like how love used to be. Danneker is a mass of messy emotions and Chisholm is a calm counterpoint of security, and both of them pull no punches in expressing their immediate thoughts to each other.

The short visit with a hysterical couple (Angela DiMarco and David Hogan) presents even a third look at relationships, where huge flaws and stifling foibles can still be overlooked. While their boisterous, drunk activities skirt the edge of being from another play, they add a quirky reality to the compromises of marriage.

The 13th of Paris Seattle Public Theater Through June 13 It’s a cold and dreary spring, but at Seattle Public Theater, their new production is full of hearts, flowers, and love letters wrapped in beautiful ribbons.

The 13th of Paris, by Mat Smart, is a love letter to love.

Poor, modern Vincent – he of text messages and emails to his girlfriend, but not of the handwritten letter (who among us writes letters anymore?) – feels like he doesn’t know what love is or how he will know if it is “real.” He thinks he loves his girlfriend, but what if they get bored? What if they sit at a fancy dinner out and have nothing to say? What about the times when they irritate each other? She seems more perfect than he is; will she leave him over his quirks and mistakes?

Vince’s grandparents are French and he inherited their little French apartment when he turned 18. He has a huge pile of letters his grandfather wrote his grandmother, and they all speak of a sort of über love affair, full of quotes like, “I seem to have fallen more in love with you since breakfast.” Vince holds those sentiments up as the ultimate in love and doesn’t think he has that with Annie.

One night, he impulsively gathers the letters and hops a plane to Paris, trying to figure out what he should do.

He finds the ghost of his grandfather, in a pinstriped suit, ready to instruct him on how to show the proper respect to love. He also

42nd Street a toe-tapping trip to New York

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer 42nd Street Village Theatre, Issaquah Through August 1 It’s now a cliché: the story of a young girl going to New York City, longing to be on Broadway and filling in for the ailing star, only to become the new Broadway sensation. Still, it’s a fresh and fun-filled production of 42nd Street which is now playing at Village Theatre. With expert direction and choreography by Steve Tomkins (with an assist from Kristin Culp), this produc-

tion is one toe-tapping smile after another.

The heart of the show is really the corps of young, energetic tap dancers who hoof it in lockstep, and even on opening night, early in a run, were engagingly unison in their rhythms. Their smiles were radiant

and their energy contagious. Music, led by Tim Symons and Bruce Monroe, was typically top of the rung. Set design by Robert Dahlstrom was less “showy” than usual, but worked well to quickly change from one location to the other, swinging in a wall or two, and keeping the “rehearsing in the theater” vibe working well. Costumes by Melanie Burgess were beautiful and over the top for performance looks and fun period everyday wear for street scenes.

This production is full of stolen scenes.

In particular, Leslie Law as Maggie Jones, a Broadway playwright, grabs hold of every opportunity to steal a laugh and the spotlight. And Jennifer Weingarten steals hearts as Annie, the chorus girl who pulls back on her own dream to promote Peggy Sawyer’s, the new girl on the line, while hoofing her own heart out in multiple songs. Tomkins promotes the tongue-in-cheek attitudes, winking at the audience with a “yes, we know

it’s an old story, but it’s still fun” point of view.

Peggy Sawyer, winningly played by Krystle Armstrong, comes to town from Pennsylvania with that big dream. She catches the eye of a young tenor hoofer, Billy (James Scheider), who helps her get a spot on the line in a big producer’s new show. The producer, Julian Marsh (played with panache by John Bogar), needs this show to be a hit. He’s gotten bit bad by the depression, but the only way he can afford to mount the show is by taking money from a kiddy car manufacturer squiring around major Broadway star, Dorothy Brock (Shelly Burch, who has the voice, the look and the chops to be the diva).

Brock needs the show, because she’s afraid she’s losing her star power. And she hangs onto Abner Dillon (talented Allan Barlow in a small role) because her true love and ex-show partner, Pat (Julian Schrenzel), can’t support her like she thinks she needs. But a tragic onstage collision with Peggy causes Dorothy to break her ankle and Peggy to get fired. That means the show must close during previews, right? Well, then we wouldn’t have the rest of the cliché, would we? Peggy must be wooed back to learn all the songs and 10 more dances in 36 hours in order to open on Broadway and become the next big thing.

Armstrong shows all the longing and excitement and gets some great dance highlights, but we don’t get to hear much of her lovely voice until late in the show.

Burch gets much of the first-half focus and delivers big songs like “You’re Getting to be a Habit With Me” and “I Only Have Eyes for You.” They duet on “About a Quarter to Nine” and sound great together.

Don’t plan to leave right when applause starts, or you’ll miss a satisfying encore.

Wiping My Mother’s Arse Artattack Theatre Through June 13 A caustic new comedy by a Scottish contemporary playwright Iain Heggie is being done at Artattack Theatre. Wiping My Mother’s Arse is a fast-paced and funny/sordid exploration of old age and wounded spirits.

It includes a blend of newer attitudes and older prejudices to homosexuality (“poofs” in Scotland) as Derek comes to visit his elderly mother in a facility she hates and finds ex-lover Larry as her favorite orderly.

As directed by Justin C. Lockwood, the four actors deliver with breakneck speed, and you’ll have to sit up and pay attention as the unfamiliar Scottish accent washes over you. If you do, though, you’ll hear pungent

Ryan O’Connor Eats His Feelings June 9 Julia’s on Broadway Actor, cabaret singer, comedian, and YouTube star Ryan O’Connor is bringing his west coast theatrical hit Ryan O’Connor Eats His Feelings to Julia’s on Broadway on June 9. O’Connor’s critically acclaimed cabaret thrill ride broke records at Hollywood’s Celebration Theatre this past February and received back-by-popular-demand second run accolades from Broadway luminaries and press alike. SGN caught up with O’Connor to discuss what Seattle can expect when the entertainer performs, for the first time, in the Emerald City.

“My favorite thing about live performance is the spontaneity,” O’Connor told SGN. “There is such an energy that only exists in live performance. My show is not 100% scripted, so the show is never the same twice. I tell the same stories and sing the same songs each show, but it is the energy that I get from the audience that dictates the tone of that performance. If you heckle me, I’ll talk to you – that’s not a dare! [Laughs.]

But I do like the show to feel like a conversation between myself and the audience in front of me.”

O’Connor became best known for his hilarious YouTube videos. “Being on YouTube is a very interesting type of ‘fame.’ It’s very insulated,” he said. “And, much like television, people watch you in their home, often on their laps [via laptops], so it can be a very personal relationship for them … to them, I am someone who is a regular part of their life. It’s a real honor to be a regular part of someone’s life like that. It makes do-

ing silly web videos feel like it has a bigger purpose.”

O’Connor says that his live show, Ryan O’Connor Eats His Feelings, is totally different from his web show.

“Same sense of humor, and same off-the-cuff improvisation,” he explained, adding, “but it really is a one-man musical.”

Ryan O’Connor Eats His Feelings is a dynamic, hilarious, and oddly touching musical journey told through song and story where O’Connor candidly shares his life: his childhood and adolescence in conservative Arizona and the trials and tribulations as an actor in New York City and Hollywood; his loves: relationship with his boyfriend, a Mormon, ex-college football star from Salt Lake City and self-proclaimed proud “chubby chaser”; and his lusts: for everything theater and food, candidly revealing his struggles as a compulsive overeater.

“I take pride in never alienating my audience. I have taken careful steps to insure that everyone can enjoy the show, from a die-hard musical fan to a confirmed musical hater,” O’Connor told SGN. “I have a mission to break every stereotype

“For my Seattle show, my accompanist will be the incredible Shelly Bort, who is a fellow YouTube celebrity and worth coming out for,” he said. “She is truly wonderful and will be a really exciting edition to the show.”

Also joining O’Connor onstage is his backup singer and comedy cohort, Lucas Coatney. “We’ve been best friends since we were kids. The irony of him being my backup singer is that he is actually a far superior singer to me,” joked O’Connor. “But the main reason I have him onstage is to have someone to play off of. We have the exact same sense of humor and he knows how to call me out when he needs to. If a joke bombs, or if I hit a flat note, he has no problem telling me in front of a live audience. I love that, and so does the audience. It’s all about the honesty.”

O’Connor is openly Gay, and according to him, has been since he was 14. “Being Gay has been an afterthought in my life ever since I was a teenager. Realizing you’re Gay while simultaneously going through puberty can do wonders for a kid,” O’Connor said. “I was really flamboyant as a teenager, and have since really found my true identity and toned it down. I’m not gonna win any masculinity awards anytime soon, but I feel pretty average in that department.”

“I have never had any negative response to my sexual orientation from my audiences, but I also haven’t been asked,” he said. “I never say ‘I’m Gay’ onstage. O’Connor’s June 9 appearance at Julia’s on Broadway will mark the first time the entertainer has performed for a Seattle audience. “I was supposed to take a trip to Seattle with my show choir my sophomore year in high school,” he recalled, “but wasn’t allowed to because of

Larry (Enrique Olguin as a supportive, though far from perfect friend) wants “closure” from his 8-year relationship with Derek, and acknowledgment for his valuable contributions to Derek’s life. Kath (Tracy Leigh with her best role in Seattle so far) wants to find out enough about Derek’s mysterious past to make sure she can move in with him and make babies and trust the relationship. Derek (Shaun Carroll, a solid new addition to the Seattle area scene) wants to hide who he is, give his mother grandchildren, and pretend to be a solid citizen with a good job.

An ongoing joke has to do with advice given on a television talk show that Larry and Kath avidly watch. The show has influenced them and educated them about how to protect themselves in emotional relationships, which, through dialogue, we learn neither had learned well before. The plot revolves around whether Andrene has money enough to buy a house and move out of the

facility, as it turns out that Derek has stolen it to buy his own house to pretend that he’s got the financial stability to be a family man. What money Andrene has left has been drawn out and used for Larry’s “wee friends” to go party with him, but Larry’s just getting back at Derek for Derek’s cleaning out Larry’s bank account as a breakingup present.

As revelation piles on revelation, audience expectation of what they’ll do gets turned on its head. See if you can guess who will leave whom and where it will go – you’re warned that it’s not likely to be cliché. All four actors do a good job with Scottish accents and attitudes, which are different from our own.

Derek gets to have redemptive moments, rather than be a total prick, giving him the possibility of achieving the manhood he desires. Though, ultimately, he never does wipe his own mother’s arse. That’s too gross for him.

How open-minded is Moby? Extremely.

The electronic music icon, assumed to be straight (though he’s never labeled his own sexual orientation), isn’t shy about throwing his weight to the GLBT community. I caught up with the Grammy-nominated artist in his New York City flat to get the scoop on tour plans and upcoming projects in 2010 – what I got was an earful of strong criticism aimed at homophobes, right-wing conservatives, and idiots in general. Moby also credits Gay culture for putting electronic-dance music on the map, something he knows firsthand from partying at Gay clubs in his teen years and being introduced to songs by Donna Summer, one of his favorite all-time divas.

Marcia’s incredible fingers knew their way around the keyboard, and her big knowing voice delighted. Her combo includes Don Bennett, whose driving bass gave the group a nice funky bottom. Saxophonist Thad Scott and guitarist Mike Schermer traded elegant licks throughout the performance. Mercy could see by Ball’s gestures how much the bandleader justifiably appreciated her musicians. The feeling seemed to be mutual.

They opened with upbeat “Rock the Boat” and “Red Beans Cooking.” When they slowed down for the torchy “Just Kiss Me, Baby,” Ball broke Mercy’s heart. “Watermelon Time” had a nice sax solo. Ball made her case for “Peace, Love, and BBQ,” then moved the crowd some more with “Hurricane on China Bay,” and “Falling Back in Love with You.” Marcia said, “You think I only do songs about New Orleans and food. We also sing about other towns in Louisiana.” She proved her point with “Thibodau, Louisiana.” Ball asked the audience, “What do you want?”

When a woman requested “House of Love,” Marcia joked, “OK, but when I play it, I’m done. You don’t want to make your move too soon.” Mercy saw the attraction of that song.

This disappointed Mercy, but her friend Jousts was happy to use the second ticket. Mercy loves the way the 61-year-old Ball keeps on keeping on. The singer/pianist is definitely a good example of a performer who resisted the temptations

Then Ball smoked away with “I’m Just a Fool Who Really Loves You” and “It’s all Right.”

Marcia dedicated her song “The Power of Love” to her friends, Lou and Suzanna, on their anniversary. That made Mercy happy, because it is one of her favorite songs, one she put on her and Cuteness’ wedding play list. That made her miss Cuteness and be ready for Equality to shape up.

Mercy liked hearing “Party Song,” about New Orleans, which assured her that “Just when you think the party is over, another one’s just begun.”

Folklife Mercy had some old friends come to town for Folklife who helped her see that event – and Seattle – with fresh eyes. She had the idea that ushering her guests home on the light rail was the best approach. That wound up taking most of the first day, so she missed Jamais Trop Tard, which is partly made up of former members of Les Femmes d’Enfer.

She did catch Whozyamama, the other part of Les Femmes, and found them delightful.

Mercy is touched by the fact that the old band did two fundraisers for her disability.

One of Mercy’s favorite things is seeing young musicians. The North Shore Celtic Ensemble was fun, with a line of violinists from small to smallest. The salsa evening had hot music. Mercy and Cuteness particularly liked Michelle Badion and her partner Evan’s tango demonstration.

Mercy and Cuteness had underestimated how long it would take to get their friends through brunch at Salty’s, so she missed Puddletown’s introduction to square dance.

She was happy to hear the workshop with Dan Preedy at NWFolklife was a great success, and that Dan really kicked it into high gear immediately and there was so much interest and enthusiasm from those who gathered to watch during the first hour, that they extended the introductory dancing for the full two-hour timeslot so more newbies could try it out. The estimated number of new participants was between 100-120, and included those “just wandering through,” who got caught up in the fun, and a couple former Puddletowners who “didn’t know Puddletown Squares was still around.”

Pay What You Can Garfield and Roosevelt High School Jazz Band Concert Mercy wants you to know the Essentially Ellington Festival Award Winners, the Garfield and Roosevelt High School Jazz Bands, will be performing on June 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Marion Oliver McCaw Hall at Seattle Center.

Two of the nation’s leading high school jazz bands (who both happen to call Seattle home) have again garnered the top prizes at this prestigious North American competition. Garfield Jazz Band won first place, and Roosevelt received an honorable mention.

You can hear both bands in concert as they perform the great jazz standards, including the renowned works of Duke Ellington, on stage at McCaw Hall. Please join them for an evening of outstanding music and celebration.

The event is pay what you can, and the suggested donation of $20 at the door would benefit Garfield and Roosevelt High School Music Programs and Seattle Center Foundation.

30th Anniversary Joint Concert of Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus Despite her friend Loyalty’s trepidations about being changed from a tenor to a bass, Mercy is very much looking forward to the joint concert Glitter and Be Gay June 25 and 26 at McCaw Hall. It is a tribute to two great American composers: Leonard Bernstein, a prodigy renowned for his energy and talents as both a conductor and composer, and Stephen Sondheim, the undisputed master of the modern Broadway musical.

The concert will feature music from Bernstein and Sondheim’s collaborations, as well as their individual careers. Expect to be transported to musical heaven when artistic director Dennis Coleman pulls out all the stops and more than 400 voices take the stage of McCaw Hall to perform music from such Broadway classics as West Side Story, Sunday in the Park with George, Wonderful Town, Sweeney Todd, Candide, and A Little Night Music.

Mark Morris Dance Group with the Seattle Symphony and The Tudor Choir May 21 Paramount Theatre If I say I was disappointed in the latest appearance in Seattle of the Mark Morris Dance Group, that is not to say is wasn’t beautiful, musically sublime, and lovely overall. But two things conspired to dim my pleasure, one of them having nothing whatsoever to do with the MMDG. At our mid-orchestra location, the air was stagnant, and the temperature was at least 80ºF. Being used to over-heated auditoria like Meany Hall, I wore a dress T-shirt so that I could minimize the heat. But, despite the beauties of the performance, I kept wishing I were home.

The other problem was the over-expectation wrought by memories of other MMDG performances such as Violet Cavern or L’Allegro, il Penseroso, ed il Moderato, that were unforgettable in their exuberance and joy. The much earlier works in this program of all-Baroque music were simply not as exciting to see. The quieter loveliness of these performances was not enough to overcome the oppressive heat. Perhaps it’s time for the MMDG to move up to first-class, modern venues such as McCaw Hall or Benaroya, or at least that the management of the Paramount notice when it’s time to turn on the A/C. The dancers and musicians could hardly have been better. The evening became a

kind of showcase for longtime member David Leventhal, often with his wife, Lauren Grant. Blessed with a lithe body and superb technique, Leventhal was as graceful and buoyant after dancing prominent parts all evening as he was at the beginning. His concentration and artistry were awesome to behold. Thirteen seasons with the MMDG have not diminished his appeal. In general, the group seemed elegant and precise, leaving little to be desired.

MMDG performances can be counted on always to be worth the price of admission for the music alone. This was no exception.

Members of the Seattle Symphony, The Tudor Choir, and soloists soprano Leena Chopra, and mezzo-soprano Katherine Growdon were aided by judicious use of amplification such that one was never aware of the boost.

The always reliable Christian Knapp led the forces for the Bach and Haydn pieces.

The big bonus turned out to be Mark Morris’ conducting of the Vivaldi “Gloria.”

Where Knapp was merely excellent, Morris was indeed inspired. The “Gloria” has never sounded more airy or buoyant; all was sweetness and light and full of energy at the same time as it seemed restrained in volume, giving everything a sense of energy held in reserve, like a coiled spring.

The works presented were “A Lake” (1991) set to Haydn’s “Horn Concerto No. 2 in D major,” Bach’s “Jesu, meine Freude,” David Leventhal of the Mark Morris Dance Group and the aforementioned “Gloria” by Vivery spring. aldi. Mark Robbins played a flawless and crophones.

household name some 20 years ago. Between the first and second set of competitors, the incomparable Aleksa Manila turned Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” into an audience sing-along. Lastly and certainly not least, it was an absolute honor to sit on a judging panel with the lovely Arnaldo! Drag Chanteuse. Kudos to SOaP for putting together such a star-studded lineup; Pride Idol just keeps getting better and better as the competition advances.

Returning from round four, contestant number one, Josh Porterfield, got the competition off to a great start. Singing Josh Groban’s “Remember When it Rained,” Porterfield showed off his beautiful voice and connected with the audience by giving a genuine performance.

Danica “DLish” Basarich, contestant number two, was week five’s Wild Card Round winner. Performing Cyndi Lauper’s “She Bop,” Danica sang and danced her way into another chance to become Seattle’s next Pride Idol at the Wild Card competition on June 13.

Contestant number three, Chase Silva, performed a wonderful rendition of Billy Paul’s “Me and Mrs. Jones.” Chase put his own touch on the song and delivered a heartfelt performance overall.

Returning from week three’s competition was Yee-Shin Huang. Yee-Shin delivered a super-sexy version of “Nice and Slow” by Usher. Yee-Shin engaged the audience, who seemed transfixed on his voice and dance moves, and ultimately earned himself second runner-up.

Contest number five, Clayton, sang Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” with an energy that was infectious. It was impossible to not clap your hands and sing along with Clayton as he delivered one of the most fun performances of the night.

Singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” (very appropriately, I might add, since the 2010 Pride theme is “Over the Rainbow”) was contestant number six, Brie Lobbett.

Brie sang the Eva Cassidy arrangement, which won her high marks from Arnaldo!, and she performed it flawlessly.

When all was said and done, contestant number one, Josh Porterfield, was voted Seattle Pride Idol week five’s winner and will advance to the Finals Round on June 20. It will be a night of singing you won’t want to miss!

Shirley MacLaine: I loved my role in Steel Magnolias because I was practicing for how irascible I could be in my old age.

I loved that part. My favorite part is Aurora Greenway from Terms of Endearment.

That’s probably what I’m most like. I like playing myself.

Andrews-Katz: The Children’s Hour was quite controversial. What lessons can be learned from it for today’s society?

MacLaine: When the play was first produced, the entire place was raided. When we made the film, [director] William Wyler had already done These Three [the film’s original title]. In the film, the woman and the man are in love with the same woman.

Wyler got skittish and cut out scenes of my character showing real loving traits to the

woman she was in love with. I fashioned my entire character in the film from that. I believe you should either do it exactly the way it’s written, or don’t do it! The headlines in the Los Angeles Times read: “The Lesbian Said, the Better.”

Andrews-Katz: What difficulties did you face in the filming of Terms of Endearment?

MacLaine: Debra Winger – end of sentence.

Andrews-Katz: You played (and earned an Emmy nomination for) the title role of Coco Chanel. Do you find it easier or more difficult to portray a living person opposed to a fictional one?

MacLaine: I don’t know. I like them both, to tell the truth. Sometimes a real one is easier because all of the emotional imprints are there. You can look at tapes of them and stuff.

Andrews-Katz: Being a political advocate for George McGovern and Dennis Kucinich, what are some of your major political concerns today?

MacLaine: I would have to say the environment, especially with the oil spills. I sit in front of the television and cry every time I see the oil spills and all the birds covered.

I can’t bear it. This is a huge, huge problem.

Andrews-Katz: You once wrote that how a potential romantic interest of yours relates to the Gay men around him is one way you judge a man’s character. Can you elaborate on that?

MacLaine: I like to know that a straight man I’m interested in is comfortable with Gay people and his own feminine side. I feel that way about straight women, too. Someone who is uncomfortable with the Gay side of life is uncomfortable with half of who they are themselves.

Andrews-Katz: How did your formal Baptist upbringing lead you to what is called “New Age Theology”?

MacLaine: I wasn’t “formal Baptist.” If I were, I’d never get to where I am now. We just went to a Baptist church.

Andrews-Katz: Do you have a particular past life that surfaces strongly in your memory?

MacLaine: There are lots of them that surface at different times depending on what I’m going through and what is required for the day’s evolution and the day’s survival.

These days, I’m remembering times in Atlantis because we have such problems with weather and natural disasters. In 2012 we come to the 24,000 time period that ends at the precision of the winter equinox. At the end, we’ll have a gravitational alignment that will be in direct alignment with the center of the galaxy. We’ll also have a magnetic frequency alignment that affects our consciousness on those levels. Everything is a question – not of something biological, but of “frequency” and “vibrations,” as they say.

And the proof of that is how this alignment is causing people to go nuts. They can’t quite balance themselves yet because it is happening in ways they never recognized before. At the apex of this process of alignment in 2012, people will have a real sense of human balance. The choices we make between now and then determine how difficult that timepiece will be for each of us.

Andrews-Katz: You’ve said that audiences don’t know whether to expect a Hollywood memoir, a cabaret act, or a lecture on metaphysics. Can you tell me what Seattle audiences should expect?

MacLaine: I’m going to speak on my life, Hollywood, my travels (both inner and outer), 2012, and any questions the audience wants to ask for a Q&A section … as long as they sign a nondisclosure document.

[Laughs.]

Andrews-Katz: Your book Out on a Leash is about human connections with their pets. What lessons can our pets teach us?

MacLaine: It’s not just about our pets, it’s about the lessons animals can teach us. I’ve known Terry the rat terrier since ancient Egypt. It’s all about the past life memories that I can learn from Egypt. Our pets are tied to the collective light – or God, if you will – and the collective love. So many people are having better relationships with their pets than with the people in their lives. I’m already dealing with what happens after Terry goes in another 4-5 years. I’m not sure what I’ll do without her.

Andrews-Katz: After performing in five

MacLaine: Just stay alive! What I’m doing is – how should I put this? – I’m forming a spiritual inner Camino Boot Camp at my ranch in New Mexico. I’ll have 12 people at a time and the best “past life therapist” to come in to recall their past lives and what people need to work on. There’ll be Chinese acupuncture techniques and facilitators.
