by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN Contributing Writer RENT Paramount Theatre Through June 21 RENT has traveled through Seattle on two previous occasions, both welcomed with exceptionally deserved enthusiasm, and last night’s revival opening of RENT is no different. It also had the added addition of joyful irony. From the simple act of walking on stage, applause vibrating the floors and screams rattling the rafters greeted each of the main characters. The same goes for the appreciation of the show’s beautiful, and sometimes poignantly haunting, melodies.

The ironic part is at least half of the audience couldn’t have been older than 10 when RENT premiered on Broadway in 1996.

Led by Adam Pascall and Anthony Rapp, recreating their original roles of Roger and Marc respectively, the cast was stellar. The leads continued their synergy from original productions and drew the audience into their world immediately. Although their voices showed evidence of the rock score’s toll, the power and clarity were there, and it was easy to understand the accolades and nominations these two men achieved for the roles.

The two actors’ performances that shone the brightest were those of drag queen Angel and the equally tragic role of Mimi. The character Angel Schunard is played by Justin Johnston, and done exceptionally well with humor, sensitivity and an infectious enthusiasm. His voice stays clear and powerful despite the athletic jumping, dancing and tabletop drum playing in “Today 4 U.” Seeing his acrobatics and fervent energy is

made more poignant when he reprises the song in “Contact” before his HIV related tragic death. When Tom Collins (Michael McElroy) sings the elegy reprise “I’ll Cover You” at Angel’s death, we can empathize his lover’s loss and feel each note of his pain, allowing our hearts to break with every pause for breath between the words beautifully belted out in lament.

Lexi Lawson plays Mimi Marquez, a street smart HIV-positive exotic dancer with a fierce vulnerability that calls to us, like moths to flames, making us crave more as our hearts are being singed. Hearing her voice, it is no wonder she was an American Idol contestant. We can only be grateful that she left the competition to play this role.

The coy girl whispers “Light My Candle” with hints of the femme fatale that ignites in “Out Tonight.” We can hear her fear and weaknesses in “Without You” and share Roger’s grief at her death. The fire escape/ pole dance is done with such ferocity that, regardless of sexual orientation, the audience squirms and purrs with an internal, delightful lechery.

Other cast members added considerable talents to bring together a great show. Nicolette Hart (Maureen) and Haneefah Wood (Joanne) have good voices and there’s playfulness to their interactions as on/off lovers.

The only problem is it doesn’t seem to build or go anywhere. The song “Take Me or Leave Me” should be a lit stick of dynamite, full of sexual tensions bursting through an argumentative song, but it only fizzles before sputtering out. Their connection didn’t seem to outweigh their arguments and if I was either character, I’m not sure I’d spend Act II contemplating reuniting.

RENT back to Seattle with stellar cast

Jacques C. Smith as Benjamin Coffin III does a good job with the role’s limitations.

He plays well the ambitious character that leaves his “bohemian” friends for a wealthy wife, but we don’t get the feeling he’s as “ruthless” as the other characters make him out to be or that the role requires. Crystal Monée Hall does an excellent job as the soloist in the signature song “Seasons of Love.” Her voice rails and truly earned the round of applause for her solo that I’m sure she receives (and deservingly so) nightly.

No matter how great the talents are of the actors in the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, it is the show itself that is the main character. Dealing with homelessness, drug addictions, HIV, and the circle of friends we call our chosen family, the show has redefined Broadway and paved the way for other shows (Spring Awakening) to come along and challenge taboos. It brings home the tragedy of Jonathan Larson’s (the composer/lyricist/writer) death even more, as he died of an aortic aneurysm the day before the Off-Broadway premier. Only giving one

interview about his beloved work, he would never know the success nor how much he influenced an entire generation.

It hits me now that I was partially wrong in the opening paragraph of this review.

Thinking back on the average age of the audience members and by judging of the equally enthusiastic long line of signature collectors at the stage door, maybe the word “irony” is misused. These 20-somethings were raised in a world where homelessness, drug addictions, and HIV infections are in the daily news. They have never known a world without those common threads. They understand that family can be the ones we choose, that compassion comes from within and that many things – including 525,600 minutes – measure a year. And they would have reached a beginning of world awareness at the time RENT premiered in 1996.

They are the generation influenced by this show and therefore, in turn will teach it to the next. It may not be ironic, but it is joyous.

Get swept away with The Tempest

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer The Tempest Seattle Shakespeare Company Through June 28 A Duke gets booted from Naples, lands on an island with his daughter, basically having been set adrift to die. His friend, however, supplies him with enough food and water and books, one of which supplies information on magic. A witch lands there, deposits her son and dies. Some years later, the King of Naples, and his son, get washed ashore there after a (magical) storm, where the Prince and Duke’s daughter fall in love.

That’s the basis of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, one of Shakespeare’s last plays, being produced by Seattle Shakespeare Company.

There’s a bit more to the story, but that’s the very basic plot. However, the mood and atmosphere of the play are all magic. Seattle Shakespeare’s production gets the magic front and center, and director George Mount pulls out all the humor he can, which is a great relief for this complicated little play.

The key character, the Duke Prospero, is played by one of Seattle’s best, Michael Winters. His experience doing Shakespeare plays is evident, though some of Shakespeare’s monologues about “life” are still fairly unintelligible. Winters has the command of the Duke and magic. He shows the wisdom of age in his ability to forgive the King and his own brother in their betrayals of the past. We are both relieved for him and let down when he gives up the magic at the end, to return to Naples and enjoy regular life with his daughter and new son-in-law.

A large part of the magic is Prospero’s slave sprite, Ariel, played with beautiful petulance by Hana Lass, whose spritely mind keeps forgetting that Prospero actually saved her from forever trapped inside a tree log. When promised her freedom, she performs Prospero’s bidding in his last revenge against the King. The witch’s son, Caliban, is called a monster over and over, and is introduced as having tried to rape Miranda, the daughter. This is, of course, very evil, though Caliban seems to want to have continued in Prospero’s love. The role is inhabited by Peter Dylan O’Connor, who transforms his look into a very spooky and tortured soul, helped by makeup and costumes of Doris Black.

The heart of the humor is in two of the ship’s rascals, Stephano (Eric Ray Anderson) and Tinculo (Kerry Ryan), with whom Caliban teams up to overthrow Prospero, and whom Caliban convinces they could rule the island. Anderson, Ryan and O’Connor play drunken conspirators with gusto. Visual jokes, a small pile of blanket over a flailing Trinculo and Caliban, which gets Stephano to talk about a monster with four legs and two heads, is commedia at its peak.

The rest of the roles are well done: Miranda (Carolyn Marie Monroe) with sweet adolescent gawkiness, Gonzalo (James Dean) as a caring friend, Ferdinand (Jeffrey Frieders) the roving-eyed Prince who tumbles for Miranda, Sebastian (Richard Nguyen Sloniker) and Antonio (Todd Licea) who conspire to kill the King, and King Alonzo (Bradley Goodwill).

receive recognition as her spouse. Because their marriage wasn’t considered legal, the funeral director did not even look at Strong during his consultation – instead, he directed all of his questions to Fleming’s mother, who had to authorize the request for cremation.

The death certificate made no mention of their relationship.

“Before the tragedy,” she said, “I never realized, in my relatively comfortable life, that so much more had to be done to really achieve essential equality and dignity for same-sex families.”

In an attempt to honor Fleming she coproduced a documentary film, for my wife…, to press for essential dignities for same-sex families in emergency and end-of-life situations. The film was completed some time ago, however, with all of the changes in our country regarding marriage, Strong said they have to go in and edit new voice-over work.

These days, Strong travels extensively with the documentary on the film festival circuit, as they do not have a distributor for the DVD yet. All of this is done out-ofpocket for Strong and the filmmakers, LD Thompson and David Rothmiller. Now, for the first time since she was thrust into the spotlight, the activist is asking for help so she can get her story, and the struggle for marriage, equality noticed by distributing the film.

“We are asking supporters to donate by coming to the fundraiser and party kickoff to Pride at the Wildrose June 21 at 7 p.m.,” Strong told SGN. “We’ve planned live music, raffles and drink specials.”

The proceeds from the cover charge at the door go directly to for my wife…. Strong and her newly formed band Velvet Fingers will perform the live music.

Also on June 21, at 4 p.m., there will be a special screening of for my wife… at the Northwest Film Forum with proceeds from ticket sales going to Strong and filmmakers.

Between the band and the film, Strong continues to advocate for equality. Gov. Chris Gregoire (D-WA) appointed her

to serve as commissioner for the Human Rights Commission.

“I’m immensely proud of our governor and her absolute compassion for out community. She is committed,” she said.

Gregoire recently signed into law a bill that gives same-sex couples who register with the state as domestic partners the same rights afforded to a married couple – rights unavailable to Strong when she lost Fleming to tragedy nearly three years ago.

“I speak whenever I am asked on behalf of marriage equality. I try to educate myself daily on what might be the next step in pushing forward as a citizen who wants to make a difference,” Strong said. “Many of my brothers and sisters [in the LGBT community] don’t think it matters whether or not we have marriage. It will always matter. As long as we are not equal in the laws of this country, we will continue to see suffering, hate crimes, and discrimination.”

Strong hopes that what happened in California with Proposition 8 will act as a wakeup call for the community and politicians.

She said we need politicians to not be afraid to take the next step and say we want marriage. “What are we waiting for? 2012 is not soon enough,” she said.

She believes we have to get uncomfortable with how we are being treated and stand up and say once and for all that we aren’t going to let some state organization come here and tell us that we don’t matter.

“Do I get upset? You bet. Do I think we can win this battle? Yes. But I will not personally stand by and do nothing,” Strong promises. “I have traveled all over and heard too many awful stories of what happens when we need protections most.”

Collecting herself, while looking to the past for strength and reason, the activist turned filmmaker, musician, and commissioner looks toward a future where equality is realized.

“I would ask that everyone come to Pride this year,” Strong said. “Be a part of our community and let others know we matter and we count and we deserve equality today.”

At the hospital, emotions running high, Strong realized in horror that she had no rights to be by Fleming’s side as she lay unconscious and dying.

“A social worker prevented me from entering the emergency room,” she later recalled, “telling me that Washington State did not recognize same-sex partners as next of kin.”

The two women had yet to procure all the legal documents to establish medical authority for each other. In the eyes of the state, Strong meant as much as a stranger to Fleming in the event a medical decision had to be made on her behalf. All the while, Fleming lay alone in a hospital room while Strong struggled to contact her wife’s family to get permission to be near her and make decisions for her care. Only then could she be treated like any other spouse fighting for their loved one.

Fleming’s sister authorized such a decision and that night, when her wife died, Strong was beside her. She said the moments following her lover’s death, telling Fleming she loved her and removing the wedding ring she wore, were irreplaceable. If Fleming’s sister had not been home to receive Strong’s emergency phone call, she would never have had those precious last minutes with the woman she loved and built a life with for 10 years.

For Strong, the nightmare was far from over. After Fleming died, Strong still did not

Charlene was at work on that December night when Fleming called her from her cell phone. Her wife was trapped in the basement of the Seattle home they shared together with the floodwaters rushing in.

Instinctively, Strong rushed home to get her out.

That Thursday, an exceptionally strong rainstorm covered Seattle with rain and flooding that locals talk about to this day.

Fleming, an acclaimed audio book narrator, saw that a flood was eminent, so she went down into her basement studio to retrieve the recording equipment she used to narrate books. As she struggled to save the equipment from water damage, something fell in front of the door, trapping her inside. That is when Strong arrived.

The water was rising fast, Strong recalls.

Still on the phone with her wife Strong said Fleming kept reassuring her as she fought with all her strength to pry open the door to the studio. Before she could, the floodwater swelled above her head, engulfing the basement. To keep from drowning, Strong was forced to swim away from the door. by Regina Hackett Special to the SGN I.D.: Individual Demographics Greg Kucera Gallery The supple line of Tom of Finland (Touko) is entirely devoted to articulating the robust bodies of young men. Always hung, hard and willing, they represent a state of imperishable bliss.

There is no such thing among the living.

In the gap between the artist’s idealized fixations and the reality of flesh, the audience for Tom of Finland’s drawings live. The drawings arrest time, which ticks onward. They are a time-out that never ends, all coming and no going, all light and no dark. If there were such a thing as a wave forever hanging at its crest, surfers would shun it.

Some who disdain Touko’s work are straight-up homophobes, but there are other reasons for giving it a pass. The artist created a heavenly world, a place where, in Wallace Steven’s phrase, “ripe fruit never fall.”

Heaven is where the imagination goes to die. Even in the literature of the faithful, hell is where the action is, which is why scholars say Milton was of the Devil’s party. “What do mine eyes with grief behold?” asks Lucifer, Milton’s fallen angel. It’s easy to love Dante’s Inferno while failing to finish (or start) his Paradiso.

Touko refused to acknowledge that joy must end. Aesthetically, he is saved from simpering irrelevance by the elegance of line. If painters of flowers are frequently called minor, then he is minor. His men are always in bloom and never fade, shining in the eternal sunshine of the artist’s mind.

Set in the political context of his time, however, the artist who died in 1991 at age 71 is a hero. To delineate a version of the beautiful which mainstream culture called repulsive is a brave act. Just as a single man

in 1989 stood up to the tanks in Tiananmen Square, Touko stood up to hatred by articulating its opposite. His art is the flower that student anti-war protesters in the late ‘60s placed in the business end of National Guard rifles.

He was a “make love, not war” kind of guy.

For that reason, a suite of his drawings is on view at the Greg Kucera Gallery as part of a group show titled, “I.D.: Individual Demographics.”

We may be what we eat, but we are also what we admire.

Other show highlights include Anne Appleby, for whom color carries the world. In “Faded Sweet Pea” (oil/wax on four panels, each 16 inches square, 2008), there is an homage to the dying world in the layered mutations of her shadings, impossible

to see reproduced.

Nola Avienne is not interested in elegies.

As she notes in her artist statement, some collectors buy art because they want to invest in a brand name, which presumably has a good chance of rising in value. “If the artist has become a commodity, why not circumvent the art altogether and literally own a piece of the artist?”

Step right up, folks. “The Donor Wall Project” features blood portraits of 72 artists. Framed in white and hung in a grid, these expressive abstractions range from light-struck to the darkly clotted.

Matt Browning continues to investigate the rituals of his skateboarding, pot-smoking, beer-chugging and male-bonded suburban youth. “Leave No Trace” is a small wooden box he carved for a secret stash.

The original must have been strictly utilitarian, but its recreation in art carries the ethos of the moment lightly, when he and his buddies huddled around a ritualized object, seeking a (collective) high.

Browning’s work proceeds from the most basic questions: Who am I and where did I come from? His story is common, but his delivery is rare.

In the horizontal green yellow and red colors of the Ethiopian flag, Seattle’s Jack Daws created a welcome mat. Set in black lettering across the front is a qualification on the invitation: “INTEGRATORS WELCOME.” None of you sorry-ass segregationists need apply.

Who’s on the outside looking in? All the hetros who hang with heteros only, and the reverse. Also not welcome are all the men who don’t want women at their dinner table, the young who shun the old, the white who know no others, the rich who do not party with the poor, the fleet-foot who look right through the lame.

What about those who count as friends no one covered in feathers, scales or fur? No one who swims, flies or runs on four legs?

Scratch out their names.

That’s pretty much everybody. Welcome to all becomes welcome to the few who live on the wild side of inclusion. Thus, a welcome mat is a rallying cry to expanded consciousness, and what’s flat on the floor aspires to higher ground.

Leigh Bowery was the king/queen of the London club scene in the early 1990s. Late one night in full regalia, he turned around from the bar and ran into Mick Jagger.

Startled, Jagger said, “Out of my way, freak.”

Bowery replied, “Out of my way, fossil.”

The oft-told exchange has become its own kind of artwork, a moment that crystallized a cultural shift. In the new world which is so much more fun than the old, only a fossil would call Bowery a freak.

Four of Fergus Greer’s portraits of Bowery are in the show. Intended as promotionals, they are now themselves art. Through Greer’s lens we know Bowery, a man constructed through the high-life personas of his clothes.

Anthonly Giocolea’s small color photograph from 2006, “Grave Diggers,” is a moment that becomes a world. A group of young males in private school uniforms cut loose in a woodpile. Giocolea sees them as they want to see themselves – exuberant and wild. The top buttons of their pressed shirts are undone, and their shined shoes ready to be scuffed. And yet, they are playing in a woodpile, not a wood. Their class constraints them from a walk on a wilder side.

In his childhood, Glenn Ligon disappeared into his desire. His “Self Portrait at 11 years old” from 2004 is a stenciled pulp paper painting of Stevie Wonder. It’s a rendering born of love. With every fiber of his nerdy, black, Gay body, Ligon longed to be, or (failing that) be with, his hero.

Dan Webb makes light of the weighty matter of identity with a “New You Machine.”

Above a stocky male torso is a lazy Susan of choices for heads. The visitor who turns the crank can turn a pinched consciousness into an expansive one, a clown into a pope.

In “AY CHIHUAHUA” from 1998, Hugo Ludena caught the downside of sexually inexperienced heterosexuals celebrating wedlock. They both rear back in horror as a champagne bottle, cork popped, explores in an orgiastic upward trajectory. Neither is ready for what in the course of their narrow lives may not occur.

For Chad States, making art begins with a question. On Craigslist, he queried, “Are you masculine?” The subjects he ended up photographing posed themselves and wore what struck them as appropriate.

For a guy named Luke, that meant nothing at all. These photos are one-two punch.

There’s the image and what the subject says about the image. Luke sits naked in an easy chair and stares provocatively at the male photographer. Does Luke protest too much?

That’s a come-hither look if I’ve ever seen one.

Luke: “I am masculine because I abandon women after taking their love. Because when you study Freud you don’t let him study you. Because I study philosophy not literature.”

Without the text, Luke would be one more guy in a chair. With it, he is, in the Diane Arbus sense, terrific.

I love Alice Wheeler’s large color print titled, “Kathleen Hanna at Home, Olympia, 1993.” Light makes a halo around her red henna hair, and the look on her beautiful young face is pensive. On her chest, however, she scribbled the word, “incest,” followed by a question mark.

Wheeler’s subjects confront the dark but stay jaunty. There’s an up-and-at-’em vibe to her work that constitutes a worldview.

Neither rain nor sleet nor snow nor incest can keep a good girl down.

Pride Idol’s final show Tuesday at R Place

by Shaun Knittel SGN Staff Writer The Seattle Out and Proud (SOAP) Pride Idol final event is June 23 at 9:30 p.m. at R Place. The winner of the singing competition will perform on the SOAP float at the Gay Pride Parade June 28. The lucky crooner will be awarded a $1,000 cash prize.

For five weeks, local talent signed up to sing a song of their choice every Tuesday night at R Place. The competition quickly gained popularity; I was at the wildcard round June 16, and it was standing-roomonly. “Private Idaho” drew a wild response from baby boomer couples throughout, still embodying that quirky, bouncy feeling from its early ‘80s release. After all these years, the combined harmony of Pierson and Wilson is amazing to take in – one of the greatest in pop music. “Quiche Lorraine” was a surprise addition to the set list, as I expected it’d been retired for newer favorites – again, longtime followers, like the numerous sexy dads in the audience and yoga-sculpted moms, knew every word to this vintage B52s number.

I loved the bubbly delivery of “Roam,” yet I wasn’t particularly fond of the vibe – or even the inclusion – of “Love in the Year 3000.” But there are no complaints filed for the ensemble’s spirited, kitschy version of “Loveshack,” which saw The B-52s dance in unison as the entire venue displayed some crafty moves of its own – I kept an eye on an adorable young father a few rows ahead who boogied and wiggled to the delight and

the usual one-song routine. The entertainment ranged from country and western to rock ‘n’ roll and anything you could think of in between. Just like the TV show, American Idol, the contestants are critiqued by a panel of judges – some naughty, some nice – and the audience texts their vote to Verizon Wireless so their favorite contestant can win.

For the final show, SOAP organizers are bringing in a special guest judge and the winners from all the previous competitions.

The night is sure to be packed with entertainment, so be sure to get there early if you want a seat. Fans of Seattle Pride Idol didn’t need Adam Lambert to come out, because at R Place, everyone’s Gay! giggles of his knee-high daughter.

It was great to see parents with small children at every viewpoint having fun, and probably reminiscing their high school prom or college hipster days. Although, I would’ve preferred to attend The B-52s previous two engagements in Seattle, at The Showbox Market or WaMu Theater (as part of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors Tour”).

The B-52s closed out their energetic set with two classics, a loopy re-do of “Planet Claire,” complete with ghost-like keyboards, and the song everybody had been waiting to hear, “Rock Lobster” – I must say, it still sounds refreshingly ahead of its time in 2009.

This was a tootsie roll performance by a band known for being edgy – obviously, on a night when straight families outnumbered Gay couples, The B-52s played it very safe.

It also wasn’t the best setting for them, as the sound was near distorted (at least in the back it was), and the mood could only reach a mid-level of excitement from a crowd that, for the most part, had to tuck their little ones in bed almost immediately after the show.

I can now say that I’ve seen The B-52s at a zoo. And while it wasn’t my exact cup o’ tea, I’ll admit to being pleasantly entertained for 90 minutes.

Moonlight and Magnolias Phoenix Theatre Through June 28 The Phoenix Theatre is a newly revived and expanded company in Edmonds that replaces Edge of the World Theatre, housed in a shopping center (with parking!) near the northend Costco. They have put hours of effort into revamping the theater space with freshly treated floors, walls, seats, and have created a lovely little theatrical venue. They are currently producing their second show there, Moonlight and Magnolias by Ron Hutchinson.

Moonlight is written in a way that makes it feel like a play written a number of years ago. In fact, it was written in 2004. It’s already been produced all over the United States, because it’s a very accessible and well-written play, with a small (four-person) cast. Perfect for regional companies.

It’s also about the making of the movie, Gone With the Wind, which we all still know about as a major classic film. It’s a well-researched, meticulously created script about how David O. Selznick had to halt production of this enormous, expensive film and essentially go back to zero to write a new script. Somehow, the combined might of

many of the best film writers in Hollywood had failed to transform the sprawling civil war Margaret Mitchell epic into a good film.

Selznick calls on Ben Hecht to “script doctor” the movie, but there are two huge problems: Hecht needs to do it in only five days, and he has never read the book! Selznick calls Victor Fleming, a director, off of the film he’s working on, The Wizard of Oz, demands that Fleming leave Oz for this film and proceeds to lock all three of them into his office for five days to develop this new script.

The premise just begs for slapstick and mayhem, and we get it in spades. The script is so well written that it carries much of the weight of the show on its own, even with mediocre productions. However, the Phoenix has created a really great production, so it’s all a very funny, lovely evening of theater.

Playing Selznick is Buddy Mahoney, who commands, bullies and orders with authority, but indicates an underlying insecurity that gives his character heart. Paul Custodio is Hecht, and carries the right tones of righteous indignation as he challenges Selznick about glorifying the Civil War southerners, who were fighting to keep slavery, just as the onset of World War II demonstrates the world’s hatred of Jews. Jay Jankins as Fleming gets most of the slapstick lines, but drops

them and picks them up so adroitly that we never feel he loses his personal dignity.

Fleming embodies some deeply embedded anti-Semitism that comes out in the tension, which heightens Hecht’s indignation about the whole project.

A benighted secretary, Melanie Calderwood, enters occasionally with food and messages, and even though we are never told that she also has to stay there five days, her torment becomes visible as the days wear on, adding to the fun. The set gets torn apart satisfactorily and in this tiny theater,

you’re very close to the mayhem.

Directed smartly by Mary Beth Dagg, set beautifully decorated by Dick Floyd and Debbie Palomera, and lots of sound queued up by Rick Wright, this is a funny evening, with satisfying overtones that give you something to think about as you leave the theater. by Marian Michener SGN Contributing Writer The Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) opened their summer season last weekend with a richly ornamented Henry VIII in the Elizabethan Theater. Vilma Silva stole the show as Queen Katherine, at first confident that she knows her power with the king, then understanding how quickly she becomes friendless. Her performance broke our hearts. Anthony Heald was chilling as the machiavellian Cardinal Wolsey. In the role of one of Wolsey’s targets, Buckingham, Micheal Elich showed bravery in the face of hopelessness. Demetra Pittman’s resonant voice made the role of the Old Lady memorable. Elijah Alexander was handsome as Henry, but his performance didn’t have much range.

John Sipes’ direction and fight choreography made the performance move well. Susan E. Mickey’s costumes were delicious.

Michael Ganio’s sets were transporting.

The second play to open in the Elizabethan Theater was Octavio Solis’ adaptation of Cervantes’ Don Quixote. Armando Duran’s performance in the title role was powerful. Other standouts were Danforth Comins as Cardenio, Vilma Silva as Lucinda, and Howie Seago as a barber.

Laird Williamson’s direction pulled together some fun staging, puppetry and props. Richard Hay’s sets were apt. The script felt episodic and seemed to have two endings. We felt it would have done well as a one-act play in a smaller venue such as the New Theater.

The third play to open in the Elizabethan Theater was a rousing version of Much Ado About Nothing. Kate Buckley’s direction kept the setting as Messina, but put it at the end of the Italian occupation in WWII. This gave more power than many other produc-

tions of the play to a number of references to the characters being fresh from a battlefield.

It made the big comic action work as relief for them after having risked death.

Nan Cibula-Jenkins’ costumes were playfully 1940s-era. Sarah Picket’s music and Jim Giancarlo’s choreography also had fun with the time period. Todd Rosenthal’s sets offered interesting possibilities.

The whole ensemble acted well and were delightfully in-synch. Tony DeBruno’s Dogberry and Michael J. Hume’s Verges had us laughing out loud. Robynn Rodriguez sparkled every moment as Beatrice. David Kelly’s Benedick raised the bar for Benedicks with his attempt to hide in a fountain.

Another play recently added to the repertory in Ashland was a new adaptation of Goldoni’s Servant of Two Masters. Oded Gross and director Tracy Young were responsible for the adaptation, which was pleasingly updated to include the current recession and its effect on OSF. The puns, physical humor and action are fast paced and rich. The ensemble is strong with Mark Bedard as Trufaldino, Elisa Bocanegra as Smeraldina, David Kelly as Pantalone and Richard Howard as Dottore standing out.

Christal Weatherly’s costumes added to the humor, as did Richard Hay’s sets. Tracy Young’s direction met the challenges of the full round seating in the New Theater and the possibilities of the script.

We were so excited about another play added to the repertory, Equivocation, one of my companions called it the best new play since Angels in America. Author Bill Cain took off with the idea of a member of James I’s court asking Shakespeare to write a play presenting the official version of the gunpowder plot. gerous to question the King’s claims about what happened. That situation resonates with contemporary cover-ups. Equivocation also deals with Shakespeare’s relationship with his daughter, which is complicated by his grief over her brother’s death. The two subplots intertwine nicely.

Anthony Heald is captivating as Shakespeare. Christine Albright brings home the role of his daughter.

Richard Elmore, Jonathen Haugen, John Tufts and Gregory Linington play a persuasive range of characters. Christopher Acebo’s sets and Deborah Dryden’s costumes create the era. Bill Rauch’s direction puts it all together.
