than voices.” A unique concert is coming up, June 19, 20 and 21 at Meany Hall. Seattle Men’s Chorus is going to sing an entire concert a cappella! This is pretty unprecedented for a chorus of this size, and a great challenge for the members.

Dennis Coleman, artistic director, explains more. “The purest form of choral singing is a cappella, just the voices alone, no piano,

He continues, “It’s an opportunity to choose music from all different periods, cultures, styles. Every

ar has done before, but even that is pretty much an absurd waste of time. From WALLE to Toy Story, Ratatouille to Finding Nemo, The Incredibles to A Bug’s Life, very little of what the studio has attempted has even come close to resembling what they’ve already done. They simply do not repeat themselves, and even when they tackle a sequel, like with Toy Story 2, they still somehow manage to do it in a way that feels fresh and original – a talent the rest of Hollywood would do good to try and emulate.

The simple truth is that it’s the story, stupid, and focusing on that particular aspect of a film’s creation is what has put them head and shoulders above everyone else. When you watch the DVDs of classic Disney films like Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio and Lady and the Tramp, you can see footage of Walt stressing the importance of the script, that the characters must ring true or nothing the animators attempt to do, even with all their skill and passion, will ever matter to the audience.

Pixar’s Up is a sky-high masterwork

Using his skills as a balloonist, he manages to rig a contraption that takes his entire home skyward, onlookers gasping at the sight as he goes floating by.

Unbeknownst to Carl, a young wilderness explorer some 70 years his junior named Russell (Jordan Nagai) has inadvertently hitched along for the ride. Together, these two strangers find a way to bond as danger comes calling, striking out from angles and destinations neither anticipates. It is a friendship no one could have expected but both individuals are in desperate need of, as the lessons learned are ones they will take solace in long after the world forgets who they even were.

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer From the time I was a little bitty in Houston, Texas, I loved the feeling of excitement and fear that I got watching old TV series like Thriller and Tales From The Crypt (that was in my later years, after Houston), so it was with the same anticipation and little thrills of nervousness that I entered the Northwest Rooms at Seattle Center last weekend for Crypticon, Seattle’s first horror convention.

I wasn’t disappointed, I’m happy to say.

From the more than life-size sculptures of old movie monsters like Frankenstein and many, many zombie and demon sculptures that graced both sides of the dealers’ room/ guest and star room to the hordes of fans dressed in similar gear, it was a banquet for me, a devoted horror fan.

But the true highlights, of course, were meeting people like Ken Foree, star of classics like the original Dawn of the Dead and The Devil’s Rejects, as well as many others.

His comment to a gushing female fan of “what have you done for me lately?” when she asked for an autograph set off a virtual bat swarm of laughter from nearby fans, but Ms. Fan stepped up and gave a reason he should give her the autograph and got it.

Other high points were stepping into a demo on “what to do when you meet a bear,” illustrated with hilariously “gory” effects by a man dressed in an announcer’s suit and someone in a bear suit, all of which was richly enjoyed by a crowd of fans and

continued from cover who is currently filming Comedy Coliseum for NBC and was in Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, as well as Cameron Crowe’s feature film Almost Famous.

ANT, comedian and host of VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club, is hyper, cheeky and hilarious.

He’s a regular guest on The Tonight Show and The Tyra Banks Show. ANT has appeared on five seasons of NBC’s hit series Last Comic Standing. The comedian has also made guest appearances on The Jamie Foxx Show and Comedy Central’s The Man Show.

I caught up with ANT days before he arrived in Seattle to talk with him about being a successful comedian, marriage equality and what the audience can expect from the Stand-up with Pride-Fest show.

Shaun Knittel: You are one of America’s most successful comedians. How did you achieve that?

ANT: I became a Scientologist. I’m kidding – sort of. I just worked and worked and never listened to the naysayers and learned early on that the pie is big enough for everyone. So long as you don’t quit, you’ll get your piece of it.

Knittel: Have you been to Seattle before?

ANT: I was in Seattle for the 2001 Seattle International Film Festival. I produced a

And of course, there were things to buy in the dealers’ room, including comics, graphic novels – often with the inkers and artists on hand to sign the purchased comics and graphic novels or posters – and photos from movies the plethora of stars had been in, with some autographs available for free from these megastars themselves.

Getting to chat it up with The Hills Have Eyes star Michale Berryman (yes, he does look like his character in person), and find out about an upcoming project called Outrage (go to outragemovie.com to see the trailer) and one called Beg was just gravy in a delightful Sunday afternoon at this marvelous adventure that was Crypticon. And getting to meet stars Doug Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy I & II) and have him go gaga over my dreads and pronounce me “gorgeous” in front of a bunch of impressed fans was the cake, pie and everything else, as we took a photo together, as well as Eileen Dietz (The Exorcist – she did all of the horrible things that happened to poor Linda Blair after she was possessed by the devil) and Tom Atkins (The Fog, Halloween IIII: Season Of the Witch) made it all worthwhile. By the end of it all, I’d posed in a mock attack by his Hills character with Michael Berryman, posed with a Desert Eagle gun at one of the many horror vendor booths, and gotten my picture snapped in a coffin by another vendor, as well as purchased a new blade in the shape of a dragon, so I left with a big smile on my face, a happy fan completely satisfied. documentary called Webcam Boys that was very well received by audiences there, so I love the Seattle area. The people have good taste!

Knittel: What are your views on marriage equality?

ANT: I don’t believe in marriage equality. I just believe in equality. If I were to be completely forthcoming, I’d tell you I don’t believe in marriage at all. But I do believe that if you want it, you should have the same rights that others have to do it. If they really want to stop Gays from getting married, then make divorce illegal – for everyone.

Propose that, and we’d have marriage rights tomorrow.

Knittel: What do you hope the audience walks away with after seeing the Stand-up with Pride-Fest?

ANT: Well, I know one thing: I hope they don’t leave with gonorrhea. I love when Gay people leave my show and say, “Wow! He is so much shorter in person.” I hope they leave with a strong sense of Pride. That they can do anything they want with their lives and they can do it openly. Visibility is our strongest weapon against homophobia. I think my entire career has exemplified that.

Knittel: Anything you want to say to your fans about the show?

ANT: Come laugh for two hours, get younger, pee yourself. And take me out for a piece of pie. I’m single, got frequent flyer miles, and looking.

[Instrument] accompaniment is different in every culture, but when you’re dealing with just the voice, it’s the connector. Voices are the same. I try to put a cappella pieces in every concert, but [we’ve never done] a whole concert of it. It’s the best!”

Coleman describes the different pieces you’ll hear. “East Indian raga, their melody is a chromatic particular scale unique to India. The traditional instruments are sitar and table. We are using Tibetan overtone singing and percussive nonsense syllables that imitate drums. Very exotic choral music. Western audiences have probably never heard it. We’re doing Russian Orthodox; our basses are reaching into the basement for those tones. Also, classical romantic European, when men’s singing societies were in every city. Shubert and Mendelssohn. And some from the folk song tradition, the Philippines, and an African-American spiritual.

The concert [challenges with] extreme difficulty, showing all sorts of barbershop techniques. It’s very unusual for a choir to do in one program. Others have done a whole program of Baroque, or of 20th-Century music. We can’t cover every style of a cappella singing, but we’re getting to do quite a few of them.”

Certain songs were chosen for their GLBT focus, such as “Not A Day Goes By” by Stephen Sondheim, and “Everything Possible”

by Fred Small – the most famous of the Gay ballads that came out of the ‘80s and ‘90s, made popular by the Flirtations, the first Gay vocal ensemble that gained a national audience in the ‘80s. Eric Lane Barnes has written a new Gay pride/human rights anthem called “Come Dance With Me.” Adding to the excitement of the program, the special guest artists are the a cappella vocal group m-pact. The six members – Britt Quentin, Fletcher Sheridan, Marco Cassone, Jeff Smith (the beatboxer), David Loucks, and Trist Curliss – have an international reputation and five albums to their credit. They have worked with artists such as Sheryl Crow, Boyz II Men, Liza Minnelli, and jazz legends Ray Charles and Natalie Cole.

SGN had an opportunity to speak with founding member Marco Cassone about what they do and what they expect when they sing with SMC. Marco went to school at UW and liked the area so much that he convinced the other founding members to move to Seattle in 1995, when they were formed. They were able to stay for nine years, but ended up moving to Los Angeles.

Cassone explains that, “m-pact is not our job; music is our career. Everybody does things like write music for other groups, sing on soundtracks, sing in other bands, direct church choirs. We do music all the time.

The opportunity to do all those other [activities] is broader in Los Angeles.”

Coleman explains, “What they do that is different than what we do, is they use beatbox by vocalizing the sound of drums, [and] they use one mic per voice, so they use complicated audio techniques for mixing.”

does. “We treat the microphones, the sound man, like a seventh member. The Men’s Chorus is like a stage actor, and m-pact is like a movie actor. Actors who act on stage have to make all of their actions big to communicate, but on camera you can be incredibly subtle. We can do the tiny, subtle moves with the help of the microphone mixing.”

Cassone says he’s excited to be guesting with SMC. “I’ve been friends with Dennis for a long time. There is no other community choir almost in the world that has it together like SMC does. It’s extraordinary in its funding, the foundation under it and the quality of music it’s doing. There are very few groups in the world that big, and few that will try something as scary or naked as an a cappella show. They’re doing something really cool and daring. We’re honored that they’ve asked m-pact.”

Cassone happens to be Gay, but the members are very diverse. “One of the really important things for the group is to portray invention and creation. The fact that we come from the four corners of this country, really diverse socio-economic [backgrounds], there are members that are Christian, some Buddhist, from rural Wyoming, very conservative to incredibly liberal. We are a microcosm of respecting diversity.” m-pact is currently working on two new albums. The sixth is more original compositions, and then they’re doing a “Stevie Wonder, Motown, Earth, Wind and Fire, symphony show. We’ll have a full, 80-person orchestra behind us, and we’ll do the vocals up front.”

Cassone wants you to know, though, that the live experience of their performance is much more powerful than a CD. “It’s really refreshing. Live far outweighs the cheap mp3 ripoff. People want to be inspired. The [SMC] demographic is really cool because it’s people that are discerning, that don’t just consume for the sake of consumption, so we’re looking forward to serve the audience. Our music comes out differently depending on the kind of audience, the buzz, so [this concert is] going to take our sound and make it slightly different.”

Coleman promises, “[m-pact is] perfect for Meany Hall; more immediate sound.

They’re opening with ‘Come Together’ by The Beatles. Also, ‘Midnight at the Oasis,’ ‘My Funny Valentine.’ Audiences will go crazy. It’s just not possible for a choir to do this individualized technique.”

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer The Offspring June 9 WaMu Theater If you find a pair of eardrums near WaMu Theater, please send them to me. They seem to have slipped out, or rather been blasted out, during The Offspring’s cement-splitting performance at the SoDo concert venue this week.

The Southern California quartet pummeled a half-filled arena with an array of hits spanning their 20-year career, opening with a hair-rising version of “Stuff is Messed Up.” Lead singer Dexter Holland stood front and center in jeans, black tee, long-sleeve army green shirt, and blond locks spiked like a perfect meringue.

Crowd favorite “Come Out and Play (Keep ‘Em Separated)” energized the already restless pit, just below the stage, and interestingly encouraged some concertgoers to run around the main floor as if it were a sports track – throughout the show, I witnessed people simply jogging around for no apparent reason. But this is part of the fun chaos attached to The Offspring, who I refer to as the NASCAR of punk – similar to their Memorial Stadium appearance at last fall’s Bumbershoot Festival, fans line up for the band’s concerts from continent to continent to purposely go hog wild.

Indeed, when Holland asked the audience early in the show, “Are you people ready to go crazy tonight?” he likely knew they were midway there. The stocky vocalist-guitarist growled through a set of great tunes, including “All I Want,” “Bad Habit” and “Want You Bad.” But he also showed his quieter side, performing a solo rendition of “Gone Away” on piano.

The Offspring could do no wrong as surfers were hoisted over shoulders and eventually plopped at the base of the stage.

Most of The Offspring’s live cuts are similar to the album versions, with the exception of an excess of noise – at one point, the group pounded away on four guitars and drums (four guitars, really?). It’s true that the acoustics inside WaMu Theater are some of the worst in Seattle, but the sound also seemed to have been turned up to maximum volume – it was too loud at the back of the main floor, though it was fine the closer you moved to the front.

On this night, even with a surprisingly lower turnout than I expected, The Offspring could do no wrong. Even a creative intermission, as carnival music played overhead while the band’s crew juggled and tossed beach balls out to the floor, was entertaining. But familiar songs are what everyone came to hear, such as the rowdy “Pretty Fly (for a White Guy).” A young pair of sweatdrenched Lesbians caught their breath after it ended, but returned to the action immediately when the group launched into “(Can’t Get My) Head Around You.” Minimal stage decor set the tone for a show that concentrated more on the music and less on frills. A highlight of the concert was The Offspring’s drilling of the rapidtempo “The Kids Aren’t Alright,” which drew fist thrusts throughout the floor and from the back bleachers. College-age folks comprised the largest percentage of the audience, followed by a strong turnout of late 30s fans and a delightful number of cool dads accompanying their waist-high sons.

A three-song encore concluded with the song that everybody had waited to hear, “Self-Esteem.” Fortunately, from where I stood, it sounded amazing – just the way it did on that afternoon in ‘94 when I was pulled over for speeding as it blared on my car stereo. It had the crunch and thrill I was

hoping it would have performed live, and helped close out the show on a hell-bent, incredible note.

Neko Case good, but not her best

Neko Case June 4 Paramount Theatre Neko Case’s sixth studio album, Middle Cyclone, is possibly her best and bravest release yet. Yet when the redheaded songstress played to a packed house at the Paramount last week, I couldn’t help but wish her live show was somehow a little braver, as well.

Which isn’t to say that she wasn’t good – with a voice as rich and soulful as hers, that would be impossible. Neko Case is a fiery lady, yet after being blissfully lost in the dangerous, passionate world of her newest album, I expected a little more spark.

Playing to an adoring Seattle audience (the Northwest will always claim her, no matter where she currently hangs her hat), Case bantered in her usual off-handed way. To diehard fans she can do no wrong; yet from the opener “Maybe Sparrow,” the overall vibe was a little too perfectly controlled.

micky tracks, often containing downright tacky lyrics. I haven’t purchased a thing from the band since their breakthrough release, Smash.

Despite semi-poor sound, The Offspring provided fans a raucous start to summer with a concert that peaked in high energy.

It wasn’t the songs that were memorable; it was the state of chaos surrounding them.

and drummer Barry Mirochnick – is as solid as can be, the instrumentation erred on the side of restraint. I kept wondering if she’d asked the band to hold back so her voice would stand out, yet her vocals didn’t reach the throaty heights she is capable of more than a handful of times.

The shimmering tracks were tame, where I hoped for vibrant. Doubtless, each song was true to form, but isn’t the point of going to a live performance to transcend what you hear on a record – to connect in an elevated, immediate way? The most memorable concerts reveal a little muscle and bone – mistakes, definitions, interpretations heightened so that you hear things more intensely.

Diving into “People Got a Lotta Nerve” and “Fever,” I kept hoping something would happen, but the show just never took off.

The lyrics in “The Pharaohs” were oddly appropriate (“you kept me wanting, like the wanting in the movies”) and the pace of the show remained the same throughout. Surprisingly, even Blacklisted favorites “Deep Red Bells” and “I Wish I Was The Moon” didn’t seem to raise the temperature of the performance above lukewarm.

“Don’t Forget Me,” the heartbreakingly tender Harry Nilsson cover was a high point, and the set closed with the magnificent new album opener “This Tornado Loves You” before a five-song encore.

Like many, I missed her in the days of the Crocodile and other legendary, pint-sized shows. But having seen her on two different tours that struck me as slightly underwhelming, I hope she trades the modest interpretations to spectacular ones in a hurry. For now think I’d rather get lost in those beautiful, unique recordings, where Case’s voice soars and the sound is as deep and vivid as the tales she describes.

Night Flight, book by Antoine de SaintExupery and adapted by Myra Platt, is currently at the Moore Theatre for a shortened run. Book-It usually doesn’t do “musicals,” although many of their productions have

original music in them or musicians onstage. Every production is a “world premiere” because each one is newly adapted from the book, rather than a play that has already been done before.

Each time is risky, though casting is usually excellently strong and production values are all well done. Night Flight is, as usual, excellently cast. A wonderful ensemble of actors is participating, and they are called upon to sing, in this “operetta” style play.

The voices of actors, such as John Bogar, John Patrick Lowrie, Sylvie Davidson, Tom Butterworth, and Lauren Kottwitz are good, strong singing voices. The musicians, a group of four – Marchette DuBois on accordion, Evan Flory-Barnes on double bass, Alex Guy on violin and viola, and Nina Darko Vukmanic on guitar – similarly played what sounds like a complicated score excellently. In addition, an experienced opera singer joins the cast, Ellaina Lewis, with a glorious voice and a beautiful and graceful form.

A creative set, with tall scaffolding and myriad stars, was designed by Matthew Smucker. Sound effects were contributed by Rob Witmer. Sound at The Moore is much different from the Center House (basement) stage, and was challenging for this production, with uneven amplification for actors and singers.

Joshua Kohl, of Degenerate Art Ensemble, wrote original music with lyrics by Myra Platt, and the tango-style compositions somewhat fit the location of the story in South America. There were few moments of defined, specific “songs;” most of the

music and singing flowed from one piece to another, with breaks. The choice to create an opera-style adaptation might have been a way of translating the lyrically poetic writing of Saint-Exupery to the stage.

But frankly, the songs ended up slowing the action down instead of moving the story along.

The impression was of trying to give the story a grand operatic meaning. The problem is that the story did not come across as grand. Perhaps this is one of the books that defeat the “Book-It treatment” to make it onto the stage. Sometimes, a story in a book must be torn far away from the book to make it work on stage. This story, of a long night waiting for various brave pilots to bring in the mail, through storms and mountainous terrain and with no radar, had little stage tension or plot. We did not get acquainted with many characters, except for the outwardly mean boss who rules with an iron fist in order to keep his pilots brave enough to fly, and the somewhat cowardly (or sensitive) new assistant who has to learn the ropes. The pilots were brave ciphers.

We know they loved to fly, and found flying more important than those they left on the ground at home.

Everyone on stage tries so hard to make this work. They believe in what they are singing and you want to believe with them that it all means something. The production just never gets off the ground. For more information, go to www.book-it.org.

The original story line goes back to Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Bohéme, based on a novel by Henri Murger. The setting is the newly founded Bohemian lifestyle of the Latin Quarter and the avant-garde patrons of Paris in 1830. The storyline deals with a group of impoverished friends and lovers.

Rodolfo is a starving poet living with Marcello, a painter. Rodolfo falls in love with Mimi, a tubercular seamstress. Other characters include: flirtatious Musetta (Marcello’s on/off girlfriend), Alcindoro (Musetta’s patron), Colline, a teacher, and a musician named Schunard. Together this group of outcasts and artists live life with all of its conflicts until Mimi finally succumbs to her illness. “...that doesn’t remind us of ‘Musetta’s Waltz’” Jonathan Larson had always loved Pucinni’s opera. He started writing an updated version with more modern music. The characters migrated to the mid 1990s in New York’s “Alphabet City.” Rodolfo became Roger, an unemployed musician trying to find his “One Great Song.” Marcello is now Marc, a documentary filmmaker. Mimi’s name remained the same but her persona became a fiery Latina and her tuberculoses transformed into HIV/AIDS. Musetta and Alcindoro became Lesbian lovers Maureen and Joanne, respectively, while Collins is now an HIV-positive philosophy teacher with Schunard becoming Angel, his lover, an HIV + drag queen who plays the pickletub drum.

So what’s the story of this musical sensation? (Spoilers ahead!) Its the last part of the century in New York’s lower east side.

Roger and Marc are squatters in a building they were told they could live rent-free.

Their former roommate Benny is now their landlord after he married a wealthy woman.

Another former roommate, Tom Collins, has returned to his friends only to be mugged before arriving. A drag queen named Angel takes Collins under his wing and they share their mutual attraction and HIV status – both are positive.

After Benny’s threat of eviction, Marc runs off to help his former girlfriend with a public protest. Maureen dumped him for a new lover, Joanne. Maureen is extremely flirtatious. Joanne is very jealous and Marc is very amused. Roger meets his neighbor Mimi, an exotic dancer and drug addict.

Roger, being a former user, at first shuns Mimi, but eventually falls under her spell.

They discover that they both have the same secret: they, too, are HIV positive.

Over the next year, Maureen and Joanne have broken up and gotten back together, as have Roger and Mimi. Collins and Angel have remained together, but Angel has gotten sicker and at his eventual funeral, the group has a large fight and the friendships are tested. Friendship and love prove stronger than petty angers and egos when Mimi dies but returns to deliver the final message: Live life to the fullest, there’s “no day but today.”

RENT is the rock musical that started with humble beginnings and grew into a Pulitzer Prize-winning phenomenon. It is credited with changing the face of musical theater and introducing an entire new generation to Broadway. The show’s story is as wondrous and tragic as its creation, bringing together death, love and glory as only musical theater and true life can parallel each other.

him for another woman like Maureen leaves Marc. His first apartment had no buzzer and so he threw down his keys to let his friends in the door. In the song “Life Support,” all the names mentioned were friends that he lost to HIV. On the evening before the night of the Off-Broadway premiere, Jonathan Larson died suddenly of an aortic aneurysm.

His collapse on January 25, 1996 was unexpected for the 35-year-old artist, happening shortly after his only interview. The cast and crew canceled the evening’s public preview, holding a staged reading of just the songs in honor of his family and friends. As the heavy oppressive silence enveloped the cast, an unidentified voice called out, “Thank you, Jonathan Larson.” This simple sentiment would go on to become the dedication at the end of the film version of RENT.

“Is Anyone in the Mainstream?”

RENT made its world premiere at the New York Theater Workshop in 1994. Originally, it played for three weeks, and when the run was over, author/composer/lyricist Jonathan Larson continued to work on his project.

The characters of Maureen and Joanne were expanded and shaped. Lyrics were changed, songs were cut and many new ones were added. Only two original workshop cast members, Anthony Rapp and Daphne Rueben Vega, would continue through the Broadway premier in January 1996.

The show moved to Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre within four months of its Off-Broadway Premier. Previews began on April 16, 1996, with the official opening two weeks later. The results were instant.

Ticket lines began to form almost immediately, creating a new fan base called “Rentheads.” When the show won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the show’s fate was sealed as an undisputed smash hit. RENT eventually closed after more than 5,120 performances and took its place as one of the top 10 longest-running Broadway shows. During its tenure, it was nominated for a total of nine Drama Desk Awards, winning six including Outstanding Featured Actor (Wilson Jermaine Heredia) for “Angel” and Outstanding Book of a Musical. It also became nominated for 10 Tony Awards, winning four, including another award for Mr. Heredia and for Best Musical of 1996.

After being considered by several other potential film directors (including Spike Lee and Rob Marshall), Chris Columbus took the project of the stage sensations transformation to silver screen. Trying to keep as much

of the original intact, 80% of the Broadway cast were rehired with two exceptions. Pregnant Daphne Rubin Vega couldn’t repeat the energy needed for “Mimi,” and Rosario Dawson was cast. Fredi Walker-Browne declined to recreate “Joanne” saying that she was too old to keep playing the part. After a brief consideration of Frenchie Davis, the coveted role went to Traci Thoms. Despite a large following and 17 different nominations, the film only won one award, the 2005 Satellite Award for Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role – Rosario Dawson.

What is the RENT legacy? The obvious ones are there: the awards of course and paving the way for future break-out shows; original cast members Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs met, fell in love and eventually married, and the show’s posterity has accurately been preserved on celluloid. But it’s more than that. It reminded us the basic importance of human compassion. It taught a new generation the beauty of caring for others and a new awareness for some of life’s dangers. But most of all, it taught the world the difference between a season and a season of love.

SIFF enters last weekend

The Country Teacher Czech Republic (subtitled) Drama Rating: Very Good A late-20s teacher leaves Prague and the school where his mother teaches, moves to the country, and takes up teaching elementary school there. It isn’t initially clear why the teacher left the city, but soon after his ex-partner shows up and begs him to return and a visit to his parents, we get a bit of a clearer picture of why he left. He is a very popular instructor and befriends many of the locals, especially a single farmer mom of a very attractive yet troubled teenager.

Mom takes a liking to the teacher and makes a pass at him, which is rejected. When the ex-partner makes his appearance events begin to spiral out of control leading to a selfinflicted crisis for the teacher. This film has very good production values and realistic performances with good plot development, together it makes for a solid film of LGBT interest; let’s hope it gets a commercial release in the USA. An Island Calling New Zealand Documentary Rating: Very Good In 2001, a Gay couple living in Fiji was murdered, one of the partners was a member of a very prominent British colonial family who had resided there for three generations.

John Scott and his partner, Greg Scrivener, had moved back to the island years before; John, as the head of the Red Cross, had been

instrumental in saving the lives of hostages taken in a failed coup attempt in 2000. The murderer had been a friend of theirs who had moved away. Was it motivated by religious or ethnic hate, or heterosexism or just retaliation for colonialism? This interesting documentary attempts to explore what happened and why. Even more surprising is the outcome of the investigation and trial.

This is a solid documentary entry, compiled in a unique way through the eyes of John’s brother Owen as the lead documentary interviewer and narrator. This one is a well done production that keeps the viewers interests. It may be coming to a theatre near you soon.

Fruit Fly USA (subtitled) Comedy Musical Rating: Below Average This film, targeting the Gay Asian market, is a musical production about a group of 20-somethings who live together in a house of creative artists near the Castro District in San Francisco. The story centers on Bethesda, a young Filipino who had been adopted.

Her parents died and she went off to the Philippines in search of her biological parents.

She has just returned from Asia to San Francisco, where she wants to her performance art project which profiles her journey. Made on a low budget by writer H.P. Mendoza (Colma: The Musical) in his directorial debut. This production is a worthwhile effort, but it still really lacks a cohesive plot and the ending never really brings it all together, it almost seems as though they are grasping for a storyline. The musical performances are very well done, and this worthwhile effort demonstrates the talent of this up-andcoming LGBT cast and crew.

Little Joe USA Documentary Rating: Average Joe Dallesandro was widely known in Gay circles in the early 1970s as the very hot star of such underground films as Trash and Heat, which were cutting-edge titillating films with lots of nudity and non-graphic sex. Discovered by Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey, who made him a star, Little Joe (from a moniker tattooed on his arm) was really one hot early beefcake model. This documentary feature (Dallesandro wrote it) is an interesting look at this man’s background, rise to fame, and his career. Filled with lots of pictures and film footage from his early career in the US and Europe, it is a flick with plenty of eye candy. As far as substance goes, well it’s all about Little Joe and his life, he really lets it all hang out, both physically as well as answering most everything you would ever want to know. While it’s not remarkable, it is really amazing that this icon of Gay masculinity has gone on to continue to work in films throughout his life, having now made 51 films as an actor.

If you like Dallesandro or are interested in the genre of early Warhol films or early nude underground films with Gay characters than this is film for you.

Talhotblond USA Documentary Rating: Excellent This documentary is one fascinating production, telling the true story of an internet love triangle gone bad that results in a murder of an innocent young man in upstate New York. Real life is often stranger than fiction and this eerie true tale proves it. This film is a must-see for anyone and everyone who has ever sought out friendship, partnership, or sex on the internet! Told through interviews with many of the participants and their families, as well as photographs, and transcripts of the actual internet text conversations, this production tells the story in a factual and non-sensational, unbiased way. It really raises lots of questions about internet freedom and regulation, individual culpability, as well as if and how should the web be policed, and if so, by whom. An absolute must-see; don’t miss it!

Mommy Is At The Hairdresser’s Canada (subtitled) Rating: Outstanding What a film! With similarities to the feature film Far From Heaven with its homage to director Douglas Sirk, this film tackles similar subject matter from an entirely different perspective: that of the children in the household. Set in the early 1960s, we see a traditional nuclear family before, during, and after the disclosure of a same-sex escapade by the father. The story is told mostly through the eyes of the eldest early teenaged sister who strives to hold onto her two younger brothers through the wreckage of their parents’ marriage. It is set from the end of the school year through summer to

Telstar UK Biopic Rating: Very Good Joe Meek was an early musical production pioneer who lived in London. This film centers on approximately seven years of his life, the music he made, and how naturally gifted as recording producer he was even without any formal instruction. Meek was also Gay, mentally unstable, and clearly addicted to speed, which obviously had a significant impact on his emotional instability.

This film is fascinating to see because it covers the very early growth of rock and roll as a market and demonstrates how remarkable it is that many of the top rock hits of that era were produced in such primitive and wildly experimental recording studios. This film does not tell a very happy tale; nonetheless, it is based on factual events and conveys a part of rock and roll music history that needs to be told. See it and be amazed!

Lambert, Pet Shop Boys, and Lady GaGa

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer The big news this week was news we already knew but were awaiting an official announcement: Adam Lambert is Gay, as in high-quality lip balm Gay. A Facebook friend commented on my page, “Let’s face it, this isn’t a surprise.” My reply, “No, it’s not, but as a journalist I can freely say ‘Gay artist’ vs. ‘Gay alleged artist’ – that’s a whole different enchilada.” Lambert declared his sexuality to fans and media in the current issue of Rolling Stone, an interview that also discloses his admitted crush on eventual American Idol champ Kris Allen – the two were initially roommates at the start of the season, and Lambert describes the situation of sharing a room with a cute, married man as “distracting” (honey, we’ve all smelled that scent of the forbidden fruit).

The officially non-hetero singing sensation is currently in rehearsals, following a quick round of national press interviews, for the upcoming “American Idols Live” tour that descends to the Tacoma Dome on July 7.

I’m in the process of getting some phone time with Lambert in the coming weeks, so stay glued.

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, equal halves of the successful music act, have included Seattle in its 16-city North American tour – interestingly, they’re not stopping in Portland, and I’ve been told from a good source that a second show at the Moore is unlikely. Pre-sale tickets sold out in five minutes – see the Pet Shop Boys advertisement in this week’s issue of Seattle Gay News for general public ticket information. And stay glued; in my crystal ball I see Tennant and/or Lowe dropping by The Music Lounge before the big concert, and my crystal ball don’t lie.

Lady GaGa Just like Madonna in her pre-Kabballah days, Lady GaGa appears to be creating buzz every single week. What’s new this time? Well, she’ll continue to tour in 2009 and will do so with none other than self-rewarding rapper Kanye West. The outspoken hip-hop star, who once asked fellow artists in his genre to stop using anti-Gay lyrics in their songs, announced on a crappy TV show (The View, gross!) that he’s hitting the road later this year with the eccentric pop princess in tow. I smell catfights already, and I predict one of the divas will be left at a roadside motel, possibly for using the other’s vanity mirror. More updates on this quite interesting tour coming soon.

The Pet Shop Boys

Endfest, Coldplay Lesbian siblings Tegan and Sara are coming back again for more fun. The Canadian alt rock twosome will play The Showbox Market on July 3 – tickets go on sale June 15. They’ve interviewed twice with me before, and we might just go for round three in the upcoming weeks.

R.I.P., polka. The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, overseers of the annual Grammy Awards, announced they will eliminate polka as a category when the 2010 festivities take place. It’s about time they axed this antiquated genre, made famous by Lawrence Welk and his tribe of overdressed dancers. If only they can expand the alternative and electronica awards, I might just accept their invitation to join their membership.

Hmmm, tough choice, but I’m gonna catch that train and see Coldplay with Snow Patrol in Vancouver instead – I value morning showers, both mine and of those around me.
