The land includes contortionists who twist their bodies into what can only be described as a human Rubik’s cube. Human towers (three people high) are constructed atop giant balls rolling about the stage. As the people-pillars tumble, they fly through the air and bounce on trampoline tarps stretched taut by other members of the land. Trapeze artists spiral high above the ground with nothing but gravity between themselves and the earth below. Highwire per-

formers balance on tightropes above the heads of those watching. Four performers ride bicycles and show the sheer definition of what can only be described as perfect balance. But it is in the Land of the Dancing Skeletons that the audience is treated to the most spectacular and gravitational defiance. As the musical Barnum states: “Just to say the word electrifies: ‘Circus!’” and nowhere is this truer than at Cirque du Soleil. The latest show just opened under the big tent at Marymoor Park, and if the costumes don’t bewitch you, the amazing feats of aerial acrobatics and contortionism will. This incarnation is called Kooza, which is derived from the Sanskrit word for “box,” but thinking outside of “the box” is only one aspect of how Cirque du Soleil works.

The storyline is deliberately minimalistic to enhance the visual spectacle that has become Cirque’s signature. The Inno-

With 10 contestants, two amazing entertainers, and a legendary guest judge, Seattle Out and Proud (SOaP) Pride Idol week six was a night to remember. The excitement produced by the fans and contestant alike made for the perfect recipe for Gay Pride, and the best way to end six weeks of regular competition.

Oh my, what a performance!

Opening and closing the show was the amazing Isaac Scott. Outside it may have been raining water, but inside it was raining dollars! He’s hot, he’s current – and he worked it out like nobody’s business.

Follies, 13th of Paris, and NCLR at Storm game

Follies Mercy and Cuteness ate up the Showtunes concert version of Sondheim’s Follies. They liked the fact that the story was about older women who had been showgirls. That gave a lot of 50-something women with great voices and stage presence a chance to strut their stuff. Standouts were Beth DeVries as Phyllis singing “Could I Leave You” and Bobbi Kotula as Carlotta delivering “I’m Still Here.” Cuteness particularly liked Bob DeDea as Buddy, who sang and danced delightfully. Showtunes lived up to their reputation as Seattle’s best-kept secret.

13th of Paris Mercy found 13th of Paris, at Seattle Public Theater, a delightful love story. Trick Dannecker charmed as Vincent, who finds himself in his grandparents’ apartment in Paris after panicking about his relationship.

Emily Chisholm was involving as Annie, his girlfriend. Frank Lawler played the ghost of Vincent’s grandfather who advised him persuasively on love and love letters. This was the West Coast premiere of the intriguing script by Mat Smart.

National Center for Lesbian Rights Fundraiser at Storm Game Mercy and Cuteness joined 70 other peo-

ple who came to a cushy suite at Key Arena to support the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) while watching the Storm game against the Phoenix Mercury. The Storm won 97-74. Kate Kendell, executive director, joked that the team would have won by 10 points on their own, but that the great Lesbian presence helped them do better.

Kendell reminded the group that NCLR was founded 33 years ago to address women losing custody of their kids because they were Lesbians. At the time, NCLR was the only organization addressing that issue.

Kate points out that there is now no state where a woman can lose her children based only on her sexuality.

NCLR has also been working on immigration cases where Gays or Lesbians live in homophobic countries. They have successfully arranged for everyone who has asked for help to be able to move here.

Kendell talked about Clay Green and Harold Scull, partners of 25 years who were separated after Harold had a fall. Harold did not want Clay to call an ambulance. When Clay did, because the fall was serious, Harold told paramedics Clay had pushed him.

Though the allegations were found not to be substantiated, Sonoma County filed for conservatorship of Harold’s estate, and sold off all the couples’ belongings. County workers also removed Clay from their home and placed him in a different assisted living facility. He wasn’t able to see his partner again

Seattle Rainbow Contra Dance (SRCD) Would you like to build community, make new friends in a casual and fun environment, learn to dance, and have a fantastic time in the process? Then come dance with Seattle Rainbow Contra Dance! No experience or partner is necessary. All dances are taught in an easy-to-learn style and the dancing is done to a live band playing traditional roots music of Scotland, Ireland, Canada and the USA! Contra dancing is similar to square dancing but danced in lines down the hall.

These dances, for the Lesbian, Gay, Queer folks and friends, are open dances and community-building events. The first dance will take place in the fall.

SRCD is looking for some folks who can help out with publicity, volunteer at the dances with set up, and generally be available to new dancers to answer questions.

Von Fliss wants, it seems, to give all of us some help in coping with the inevitable transitions and losses in our lives, whether we’ve gone through them yet or not. With the help of John Osebold as director, they’ve made a quirky journey through this difficult terrain, in a sort of wave pattern. They come close and move away and come close again, giving the audience time to engage in their own heads as close as they want or to back away from emotions they don’t want to experience.

Meshell Ndegeocello Mercy and Cuteness are excited that Meshell Ndegeocello is going to be at the Triple Door on Tuesday, June 29. Meshell will present a night of Gil Scott-Heron covers. She will surely bust out many other songs from her illustrious career.

Meshell is a 10-time Grammy nominee.

She performed at the Grammy Awards broadcast from Madison Square Garden in 1997. A bass player above all else, Meshell brings her signature warm, fat, and melodic groove to everything she does. An area of infusing drama into the production by going through a door to sit in a chair doesn’t do much to add to the production, but there is a mesmerizing moment where she folds, unfolds, and folds a blanket that gives an abstract, but perfectly on-point, physical demonstration to what she’s feeling without adding a word.

Montana von Fliss in Cancer: The Musical

Cancer: The Musical Washington Ensemble Theatre Through June 21 Washington Ensemble Theatre (WET) is presenting a world premiere of a oneperson show, Cancer: The Musical, written and performed by Montana von Fliss.

She is an engaging actress tackling a difficult subject, and attempting to create some grace and humor in the generally humorless subject of cancer and death.

She does start off on an arms-length way to get into the subject by creating a lab and a scientific process to measure “Loss” (capital “L” indicates a bigger loss than just a small “l”). The use of a projector and scale are smart, snappy, and fun. She injects some silliness with confetti and giving herself her own rimshots on various drum sets, though that wears a bit thin. A sickish moment occurs when she apparently weighs the dust of her father in an unwieldy plastic bag, though I wouldn’t truly believe that was her father (at least I would hope not).

She gives a biographical outline of her father’s life, and in a twist of too much information, his life does not at all indicate that he was someone to be so much beloved of, as she declares her undying love for her father. In fact, his difficult and uneven life sounds like so much abandonment and lack of ability to trust him. From that point on, her description of how lovely life was with him is tainted by a lack of evidence that their relationship was able somehow to overcome all that trash.

Von Fliss speaks movingly and lovingly of how she stayed by his side as he

deteriorated. She was clearly an outstanding daughter, whether he actually deserved it or not. In this segment, she reaches the audience in a very personal, tangible way. She has an unaffected delivery and lets us into her feelings as she describes the process.

The performance is not exactly a musical, though it does have some original music (they forgot to credit the composer, but lyrics are by Ms. von Fliss), which is an oddly entertaining addition. In fact, the

Bradley Cooper’s torso stars in A-Team reboot

Fascinating Mormon Proposition will make you angry

8: The Mormon Proposition June 18 Limited release with full online distribution For a long time, I thought all Mormons were like the Osmond family. I figured they all had 20 kids and sat around the house with toothy grins singing pop songs and hoarding food in the root cellar. Such are the misunderstandings of the young and ignorant.

During my final year at the University of Colorado, a film program classmate made a powerful documentary as his final project about his journey out of the Mormon Church. The final scenes showed him praying naked before an altar. These scenes were shot at a local Protestant church, not a Mormon Temple. You see, my friend wouldn’t have been allowed in the temple.

At the time, I knew my friend’s journey out of the Mormon Church had been difficult. That was made painfully clear as his short film unfolded. However, I didn’t understand that his journey was not terribly unique within Mormon culture. I didn’t get that leaving the Mormon Church is extremely difficult and emotionally taxing for nearly everyone who tries.

Leaving is thorny partly because Mormon dogma is strict and obedience is mandatory.

Additionally, after a person leaves, families often limit contact (excommunicated members are still welcome to attend church services though they are barred from entering the temple). But that isn’t all there is to it.

As I watched 8: The Mormon Proposition, it became more and more clear that leaving the Mormon Church and turning your back

on its teachings is tougher than in many other Christian traditions. And I thought back to my college friend.

Though 8: The Mormon Proposition mainly steers clear of complicated Mormon dogma (and I’m no expert), it does give a brief overview of the what Mormons call “the spiritual family.” According to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) website at www.mormon.org, “One of God’s gifts is the Resurrection, the reuniting of the physical body and spirit, made possible by the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.” A bit further down, the website states, “In the spirit world, your memories of this life and the knowledge you have gained on Earth will remain with you.”

As I watched that section of the documentary, it (finally) dawned on me that turning away from the Mormon Church means you turn away from your family and that family isn’t just a group of relationships that have meaning in this physical plane of existence.

In fact, your family, the family which lives right here on earth, will be reconstituted eternally in God’s presence forever and ever, amen.

When you are Queer and you disrupt a Mormon family, you not only disrupt the family in the here and now; you disrupt the family for eternity. That’s serious.

The eternal disruption of the spiritual family is just one of many possible explanations for the political actions of the Mormon Church regarding Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure intended to render the May 15, 2008 California Supreme Court decision in favor of marriage equality null and void via popular vote. Proposition 8 was approved by a close vote of 52% to 48% on November 4, 2008, after a contentious and

And that seems downright un-American to me.

turing of America’s sexual attitudes and was a major factor in the sexual revolution in the 1960s, which led the Gay liberation movement. Even in the 1950s, Playboy was providing a place for the free exchange of ideas on issues such as sexual liberation and racial integration, and led the fight against the vestiges of Puritanism that were established in U.S. society and within the government (especially the post office).

This film does not shy away from controversy, including allegations against Hefner and his empire as being based on the sexist ideology of women as objects, including interviews with his detractors. Yet we are able to gain an insight into who Hefner really is, what makes him tick, and what his real attitudes are toward women and minorities. Director Brigitte Berman exploits the considerable archival material available to document Playboy’s evolution and Hefner’s activity in fighting racism and heterosexism, even in the backward 1950s and 1960s, including his buyback of Playboy Club franchises in the Deep South to insure that they were open to all races. Most impressive is footage from several syndicated serial Playboy television shows that Hefner created and aired in that time period which were racially inclusive and featured many noted stars and jazz performers including Sammy Davis Jr., Dick Gregory, and Dizzy Gillespie. This is another example of must-see SIFF documentary films and is scheduled for a limited release on July 30, 2010.

The String Rating: Average Goin Coming Out Drama France/Belgium/ Tunisia (Subtitled) Malik, a 30ish architect, returns home from France to live with his wealthy, recently widowed mom in the family seaside villa. He takes an immediate liking to Bilal, the young man who helps out on the estate in exchange for rent. Soon, his mom discovers he’s Gay. He plans to enter into a marriage of convenience with a Lesbian friend who is getting artificially inseminated to have a baby so the child won’t be a bastard. Oh, and as for the “string” aspect to the plot: Bilal has anxiety attacks regarding the discovery of his sexual orientation, which manifests itself as string or thread from his shirt or sweater that seems to appear when he becomes anxious with his mother. The unraveling thread causes him to spin around in his anxiety attacks. Unfortunately there is lack of continuity in this production; the string aspect seems to disappear altogether around the middle of film. What does make this film interesting is the Gay plot angle in Tunisian culture; it is amazingly western and modernistic in its portrayal. Drifting Rating: Below Average Drama Spain (Subtitled) June 13, 6:30 p.m., Uptown This is a story of a younger woman who returns from service as a nurse on an aid mission in Africa, where she experienced quite a bit of violence. As she attempts to adjust to life back in Spain, the emotional demons of her experiences in Africa haunt her. She flees her husband and their residence without any warning and takes a job as a security guard at a hotel/sanitarium. 8: The Mormon Proposition Rating: Outstanding Documentary – Political USA This must-see film is probably the most relevant and important documentary to screen at this year’s SIFF for the LGBT community! The subject is the Mormon Church and their covert leadership in organizing political opposition to same-sex marriage. Beginning with the Hawaii campaign and leading into the California Proposition 8 ballot initiative, this film covers all the bases in exposing the role of the Salt Lake City-based LDS church leadership. The film exposes the role of the church leadership as the primary organizers and funders of these campaigns, and their efforts to act as covert political operatives by identifying and recruiting others to act as the public front in opposing equality. Yet this movie covers not only the political, but the personal impact of the Mormon Church’s hostility toward LBGT people which has resulted in irreparable harm and death to many.

This is a remarkable exposé which not only uses a paper trail of inter-church documentation which was leaked, but also interviews and recorded public statements of many Mormon Church and political leaders in which they convey their expressions of bigotry and hatred of LGBT people and their efforts to block and deprive Gay people equal rights under the law. Yet the film goes even further by explaining the fundamental Mormon philosophy of obedience, as well as the threat that LGBT people are to their distorted and arrogant concept of the prelife and afterlife, including a stunning onscreen admission by one of the Mormon political leaders that polygamy remains a central tenant of after-death existence. And it doesn’t end there; the church placed enormous pressure on their members to donate funds as an obligation of their affiliation, as well as violating campaign finance disclosure laws in funding distorted campaign commercials to vilify LGBT people by exploiting false fear-based stereotypes in very sophisticated and organized campaigns that originate in the LDS hierarchy.

It profiles a Gay couple of LDS upbringing, Spencer Jones and Tyler Barric (a direct descendent of, and who bears a remarkable resemblance to, Mormon Church pioneer Frederick Granger Williams), who married in California while it was legal to do so, and have become leaders in the cause to expose the hypocrisy, bigotry, and clandestine leadership of the Mormon Church in organizing opposition to LGBT rights. This film raises so many questions not only of the appropriateness of religious involvement in politics, but also issues of tax-exempt status of religious organizations which then use tax-free dollars for political purposes. Even more disconcerting is the huge social costs exacted by the LDS church activism in promoting intolerance. This must-see film will be released in selected theatres and “on demand” on June 18, and on DVD on July 13.

Going South Rating: Poor Roadtrip/ Coming of Age Drama France (Subtitled) June 13, 4 p.m., SIFF Cinema This French road trip film centers on a young man struggling to overcome the suicide of his father that he witnessed as child, and the resulting insanity and estrangement of his mother. He is traveling with a pregnant girl and her Gay brother as they venture to a beach in the south of France together.

The pregnant girl picks up another young man along the way and the central character repeatedly rebuffs the advances of the Gay brother, until finally giving into his own desires once they arrive at the beach.

Going backward and forward in time, the plot unwinds with the suicide weapon figuring prominently in the story. Unfortunately, this film really never quite comes together to explain fully the backgrounds of the other main characters, and it isn’t until nearly the end of the film that the plot reaches clarity.

Coppélia McCaw Hall Through June 13 There is no doubt that ballet fans – season subscribers and casual ticket buyers – love the famous “story ballets” from the vast repertoire of Russian, European, and American ballet. Pacific Northwest Ballet’s current Coppélia, in the 1974 version choreographed by George Balanchine, is a case in point.

Originally produced in Paris in 1870, the legendary work is best known from the 1884 Russian production by Marius Petipa.

That choreography was revised in 1894, and various editions and revisions were passed down for the next century. PNB earlier staged a version by artistic co-director Kent Stowell. This Balanchine edition has been the dream of PNB’s current artistic director, Peter Boal, for nearly three years. The production continues this weekend through the Sunday matinee. As usual for story ballets, attendance is strong and family audiences are especially attracted to Coppélia – the tale of a toy doll that magically seems to come to life.

(While this version of the famous tale is popularly credited to Balanchine, it is actually a co-creation between Balanchine and Alexandra Danilova – originally a fabled ballerina is her native Russia, then a star for Balanchine, then his off-stage lover, and finally a collaborator.)

Next year, PNB will stage four major story ballets – Cinderella, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Giselle, and the annual Nutcracker.

Thar’s gold in them age-old stories, and terrific opportunities for principal dancers and soloists to shine in spectacular roles.

PNB’s new production, which is a coproduction with the San Francisco Ballet, is a visual treat at all times. The sets and costume designs by Roberta Guidi di Bagno are delightful. Randall G. Chiarelli’s lighting design is another major technical element that adds to the production’s success.

Of course, the famous score by Leo Delibes is a major starting point. Conductor Nathan Fifield and the PNB Orchestra brought the score vividly to life.

On opening night, the radiant Kaori Nakamura danced the dual role of Swanilda and Coppélia. Swanilda, the village girl, grows jealous of the mechanical doll at the toy factory who attracts the attention of her boyfriend, Franz. Swanilda and Franz’ courtship dominate Act One’s dancing highlights. At the end of Act One, the doddering Dr. Coppelius, the toy designer who has named his greatest creation after himself, drops the key to his mysterious toy factory as he leaves for an errand. Swanhilda and her village girlfriends sneak into the locked house while Franz, who believes the doll to be a real girl reading on her balcony, brings a ladder to the house to climb up to the second story.

All this fantasy makes little sense – but it does not need to. It’s all an insane basis for a lot of glorious dancing and a wisp of a plot.

(If the plot sounds suspiciously familiar, the same concept was used as one of the stories in The Tales Of Hoffman, both the original story and the later Offenbach opera.

the belly of a real Disney creation, namely Pinocchio’s whale, Monstro. This hall, designed by Frank Gehry, who designed our own Experience Music Project, is beautiful inside and out (even if the lobbies are cramped to the point of claustrophobia).

Best of all, the acoustics are superb, on a par in my experience with The Amsterdam Concertgebouw, although slightly less resonant.

The audio on this DVD is excellent in the Mahler “Symphony No. 1 in D major” but a little cramped in the louder passages of the Adams “City Noir.” (If you have a home theater with surround sound, choosing the “Surround” audio option actually helps open up the sound here; otherwise, there is a lack of “air” between the instruments.) This video is by the ubiquitous Brian Large and is generally terrific, choosing well between focus on the players and on Dudamel. Especially in the extremely complex orchestration of the Adams, the camera actually helps one hear the significant lines.

“City Noir” is a world premiere performance and was commissioned by the L.A. Phil for this occasion. Composer John Adams (b. 1947) has been named by Dudamel to the new position of creative chair for the L.A. Phil. The 28-year-old conductor felt it was important to have a world premiere at this inaugural gala. “City Noir” is a 30-minute symphony in three movements. (The DVD, for some reason, fails to mark those movements as they play, making it difficult to know when we move from the first to the second movement. The four movements of the Mahler are marked and titled.)

One of the great virtues of a recording is, of course, the opportunity to listen to an unfamiliar work over and over, to better understand its language and thereby learn whether its content is worth your time. I can testify, after several auditions, that “City Noir” does indeed reward repeated visits. At first, it sounded like an overly dense mass of orchestral sound; it is very challenging both for the players and the audience. By the second hearing, I began to see through the orchestral density and appreciate the many quieter passages I had somehow almost

missed earlier. Soon I came to like the complexities and to recognize more of Adams’ minimalist patterns and rather meditative flow. My partner, Dale, liked it the first time; it took me longer to really hear the piece.

The real test, for me, of Gustavo Dudamel’s talent comes with the Mahler, which I have loved from childhood. Superb readings by Bruno Walter, James Levine, etc. had schooled my consciousness to the everfresh glories of this score. Though prone to very slow tempi at times (like the opening of the first movement), Dudamel does not disappoint. Cues to the players are not just cues; the manner in which he communicates often includes the shape of a phrase and its emotion. To say that his expressions convey the joy of making music with these musicians would be understatement. The L.A. Phil clearly loves playing for him, and the combination is infectious. The slow passages are well-sustained and full of feeling.

Most surprising is the very Viennese sense, the Mahlerian heart-on-the-sleeve essence, and the appropriate daring to take Mahler to the extremes that so affronted the audiences who first heard this music. This is an exciting performance, well worth revisiting again and again.

Gustavo Dudamel is such an attractive phenomenon that you should have no trouble finding this DVD, whether online or at stores. Also recommended is an excellent DVD of Gustavo conducting the “astonishing” (New York Times) Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela in Bonn, Germany, in the Beethoven “Eroica.” This video includes a most engaging documentary on the amazing system of music educational outreach to Venezuelan youth, especially those from poor neighborhoods. This is the system that produced Gustavo and the orchestra with whom he has made several recordings.

I triple-dog-dare you to see the concluding encores of the Bonn concert without being swept away by the contagious joy of such playing!

Forbidden Fashion has strong showing at the Fairmont

Forbidden Fashion Show June 4 Fairmont Olympic Hotel On June 4, Seattle fashionistas, Gay and straight, met together at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel (411 University St.) in downtown Seattle for the third annual Forbidden Fashion Show, an underwear, lingerie and swimwear runway show, showcasing and celebrating masculinity and femininity.

Both shows were directed by local Gay designer Eduardo Khawam, who you may know as the host of Seattle Out and Proud’s Pride Idol.

A pre-show beforehand, the 3rd Annual Project Red Dress Fashion Show, showcased the work of local fashion design students and raised money for the American Heart Association.

More than 10 students competed in this year’s project Red Dress. Students were given $200 worth of materials and less than 24 hours to design and create a red dress for their models, provided courtesy of Seattle Model’s Guild.

Most of the dresses were absolutely stunning, especially given the time allotted to create and design them. Local fashionistas, designers, and clothiers served as judges while celebrity guest judge Nick Verreos

from Project Runway lent his expertise.

The winner, Rebecca Beesley of the International Academy of Design and Technology, who won a scholarship and summer internship, created a stunning gown and won the crowd favorite award as well as the favor of the judges.

The first runner-up was Gingerlyn Bellus, also of the International Academy of Design and Technology, who created a most flattering gown designed with the older woman in mind. The second runner-up was Jason Arrington of the New York Fashion Academy (also a local design school) with his animethemed dress.

After a short celebration for the students, the Forbidden Fashion Show kicked off, with its themes of daring, desire, femininity, intensity, masculinity, mysteriousness, obsession, passion, physicality, sensuality, and sizzling sexiness. The opening tango performances added to the show’s spicy “caliente” theme.

Forbidden has already become a presummer tradition in its third year, and gives local designers and clothiers a chance to showcase their wares and offer their opinions on the new trends.

Kicking off the first half of competitive singing was Victor Cruz. Performing “U Got it Bad” by Usher, Victor had the ear of the audience from beginning to end. Victor set the tone for the night with a message that was loud and clear: I came here to win this!

Contestant number two, Michelle Carman (with a pair of pumps coveted by Sister Domine Trix), returned from previous weeks to perform Alamah Miles’ “Black Velvet.” Although Michelle did not place, she gave a strong performance and all the judges agreed that we’d love to see her come back next season and give it another try.

Singing an original song, “Salvation,”

contestant number three Jonathen Noble was an absolute delight. Jonathen put his work out there for everyone (and Andrew) to judge and that takes courage. At the night’s end, Jonathen did not place, but it should be said that he gave one of the best performances of the night.

Next up, Nathan Wilson with a Clay Aiken version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Although I did not like his choice of arrangement (Nathan’s fan club booed me for that!), I can’t deny that Nathan has a wonderful voice. Overall, he entertained and had a good time doing it.

Contestant number five, the very Gay Michael Wasileski, earned second runner-up and a chance to advance to the June 13 Wild Card Round. Singing, dancing, and delivering “Strongest Suit,” a number from a musical, Michael won over the crowd with ease.

I’m looking forward to seeing what he’s prepared for this Sunday’s contest.

half of Seattle Pride Idol week six. VixXen’s performance was fun, and the audience loved every minute of it! Can I just say that the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the Abbey of St. Joan, rock? I can’t imagine our happy LGBT community without the Sisters and their shenanigans and philanthropy.

Kicking off the second round of competition and earning first runner-up was Tony Magana, who sang Luther Vandross’ “Always and Forever.” Tony was nice to look at, good to listen to, and really earned the chance to become Seattle’s next Pride Idol. I look forward to hearing Tony sing this Sunday as he joins the other Wild Card Round contestants onstage.

Contestant number seven, Yee-Shin Huang, struck gold with a beautiful version of George Michael’s “Father Figure.” YeeShin chose the perfect song for his voice and brought a cheering section (they even made signs to show support), which ultimately led to a minutes-long applause at the conclusion of his flawless performance.

Gaying it up for us all was contestant number eight, Drew Myers Regulinski, who sang Abba’s “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme.”

Not the strongest performance of the evening, but certainly the most fun. Thanks for that, Drew!

Returning from last week’s competition, contestant number nine, Chase, sang Stevie Wonder’s “If You Really Love Me.” There is no doubt Chase has a great voice and really enjoys singing. I know I speak for all the judges when I say that he should come back next season and give it another go.

Ending week six of regular competition was Sean Allison with “Gone” by Nsync.

Sean did not imitate the boy band; instead, he opted for singing a unique version of the pop ballad. Overall, Sean gave an enjoyable performance.

At the end of the competition, Yee-Shin was named the winner of week six and he will advance to the Finals Round on June 20 to compete to become Seattle’s 2010 Pride Idol.

Well, Idol fans, that’s all she wrote for open competition. Don’t miss this week’s Wild Card Round Sunday at 8 p.m. at R Place. This is going to be amazing! We’ve got all the Wild Card winners returning for one night where they’ll get one last shot to advance. Also, a little Gay SOaP birdie told me that there’s some fierce guest performances scheduled. tonishing acts Cirque du Soleil has ever presented, The Wheel of Death is a marvelous wonder. Lowered from the ceiling with great pomp and circumstance, the wheel is shaped like a baby’s rattle with two large “hamster wheels” at either end. Two men dressed like carnivále demons appear and take their places on either end, entering the giant wheels.

The speed of the wheel is fueled completely by human power, and as these men start running and spinning their wheels – literally – the entire display turns on an axis. Jumping from inside to outside – and back – of their spinning wheels, these men thumb their noses at gravity with what can only be described as death-defying assuredness, evoking smashing applause and audible sounds of wonder from the audience.

But Cirque du Soleil isn’t only about heart-stopping acts of sheer visual delight; there are plenty of comedic scenes to entertain younger (or even younger at heart) audience members, as well. The Cirque clowns are highly entertaining, and unlike American circus clowns, they don’t hide behind heavily painted faces with scary fixed expressions. Since most of the people working at Cirque are presented in costumes (including concession stand attendees and souvenir sellers), it is often difficult to figure out who the clowns are before they have roped you into being part of their act – and it’s all in good fun. Pretending to be ushers, they purposely lead people to the wrong seats as well as taking them on long treks, crossing over and circling the perimeters of the stage before seating the guests. Yellow caution tape is tied around audience members by people dressed as stagehands. While the clowns do present some buffoonery, it is all done on a higher level than 30 passengers exiting a compact car or thrown buckets of water that becomes paper confetti.

Keeping with its previous reputations, Cirque du Soleil is an incredible show not to be missed. As Irving Berlin wrote, “The costumes, the scenery, the makeup, the props … there is NO business like show business” – and no show business like Cirque du Soleil.
