Maestro’s Menagerie Teatro ZinZanni Through August 29 The zany humor that is the trademark of Teatro ZinZanni, the long-running European-styled cabaret revue and dinner theater at the Seattle Center, is the focus in the newest ZinZanni outing, Maestro’s Menagerie, continuing through August 29 in the historic “spiegeltent.”

The spiegeltent, literally “mirror tent,” is named the Moulin Rouge and is, itself, celebrating its 100th anniversary.

in my tastes, but because West Side Story is such great stuff that even I love, love, love it. This concert by the Seattle Men’s Chorus and the Seattle Women’s Chorus featured a lot of Bernstein and Sondheim, and these two talents joined forces to make West Side Story the masterpiece it is.

The program began with both choruses on stage, with the SWC looking even bigger than the SMC. A more appropriate opening could

not be imagined: “Something’s Coming” and “Tonight,” both of course from West Side Story. A large orchestra, expertly miked, occupied the pit and never swamped the singers. In general, the concert moved very quickly from number to number, so that an amazing amount of musical terrain was traveled. Most of the evening had a rare coherence besee glitter page 33

He surprised me with his sharp performance in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (apparently the name Ford brings Affleck mojo). Here he is perfect as an emotionally detached sociopath who’s long on confidence and short on em-

I’m afraid I’ve turned my partner Steven into a bigger movie snob than I am. He was slightly disappointed in Predators, feeling like he’d seen the movie before. Well, to be fair, he has. Though not with these characters (the Predator character is brilliantly conceived despite this being only the second movie to truly exploit the potential) in this setting. That’s how the classic Hollywood movie works. If I want my buttons pushed this summer, I’ll go see I Am Love, Winter’s Bone, or The Killer Inside Me. But I don’t always want my buttons pushed.

Adrien Brody (Royce) has been in the gym; Topher Grace (Edwin) has not. They are both solid actors with little to do other than grimace and show resolve. Grace gets a solid D for his work because the change his character goes through feels unearned. Brody gets a B because his character’s arc is pretty well modulated if utterly predictable (not totally his fault).

The rest of the cast are cartoon characters – fun cartoon characters, but still cartoon characters. In fact, Laurence Fishburne’s character talking to himself elicited a couple of unintended snickers.

If there’s a twist on the style, it’s got to do with the moral ambiguity/deficit of nearly every character in the film. Sure, I was rooting for the humans at the start, but the more I found out about each of them, the more they all started to look a lot like the other guys.

Who said this flick wouldn’t make you think?

Actually, I said that, and while I do recommend you see Predators, I hope you don’t actually think about it.

precipices, fortuitous falls affording fantastic escapes, and über-violent fisticuffs in which nobody gets seriously injured. I expected booby traps, dangerous flora/fauna, and guns perpetually filled with ammo. I wasn’t disappointed.

Predators is like your favorite pair of jeans, and there’s a good reason why Antal and crew made these familiar cinematic choices. It’s because they work and they have worked for a very, very long time.

Predators may not make you think, but that’s not its game.

by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer Predators Opening July 9 Predators is not cutting-edge sci-fi. On the contrary, if I had to teach a class on the classic Hollywood action/adventure style I’d have the students watch Predators. It’s textbook.

The Predators team (producer Robert Rodriguez, director Nimród Antal, and writers Michael Finch and Alex Litvak) have purloined from the best of classic Hollywood to make a fun summer movie that’s a great way to blow a couple of hours.

And the monsters are delicious.

A group of strangers end up in a jungle together, most of them armed to the teeth.

They must figure out where they are, who brought them there, and why. Ultimately, they must also figure out how to avoid becoming a trophy on a very nasty dude’s wall.

I knew going in there would be altruistic heroism, ugly surprises, and unredeemable villains. I knew there would be rescues from

The Killer Inside Me Now Playing Landmark Varsity Theatre Warning: This film is not for the squeamish. Warning: This warning is not an exaggeration. I can handle a good deal of cinematic violence and this film pushed me to my limits.

The Killer Inside Me is based on the ‘50s-era pulp novel of the same name by Jim Thompson. Thompson also wrote screenplays, co-writing Stanley Kubrick’s early films The Killing and Paths of Glory.

Other films based on his novels include The Getaway, The Grifters, and an earlier version of The Killer Inside Me starring Stacy Keach as Lou Ford.

In the 2010 version of The Killer Inside Me, Lou Ford (Casey Affleck) is a small-town West Texas deputy with a solid reputation, a sassy girlfriend (Kate Hudson), and a nasty little secret. One day Ford goes out to check on a local prostitute named Joyce (Jessica Alba) and he ends up roughing her up a bit before he fucks her (in all fairness, she hits him first).

Everything, including murder, extortion, incest, and all manner of mayhem, spirals out of control from this point of departure. And believe me, this badass little flick has a little

of everything.

The storytelling is tight. The plot unfolds purpose-

pathy. It’s a fascinating performance and one that could have easily gone awry.

Jessica Alba is really good at getting her face punched in. I mean really, really good at it. If you’re into that sort of thing, you’ll enjoy The Killer Inside Me. Also, if you’re into that sort of thing, you’re a total sicko.

Alba also has a couple of other good scenes as the masochistic call girl who figures the deputy as her way out of the sex business and out of town (in a way, she’s right).

Veteran Ned Beatty returns to the big screen as the small town’s big-dog contractor, Chester Conway. Beatty is always good, and here he gets to be all “Texas rich guy who’s not very nice and way smarter than he looks.” Kate Hudson, Bill Pullman, and Elias Koteas (another excellent character actor) are along for the ride and do solid work in supporting roles.

The Killer Inside Me (yes that’s a dirty double entendre) is a nicely turned out neonoir flick that’s heavy on the violence.

However, it’s also a razor-sharp look at how (or if) sociopaths come to be. The film is horrendously violent and probably goes a bit further than it needs to, but the violence is central to the film’s larger aims. It’s about pure violence and the kind of evil that perpetrates pure violence. In our violent world, that’s a valid cinematic theme. However, I wouldn’t eat much before you see it. See it fast; it’s not in Seattle for much longer.

burly bikers, while the hugely creepy penultimate standoff had my palms sweating and my arms covered in goose pimples.

Additionally, while the mystery itself does tend to strain credulity, I did like the way the filmmakers balanced Lisbeth and Mikael’s parallel storylines. One definitely eases right into the other, both working fairly seamlessly with the other making the point where they ultimately join feel reasonably natural. I also felt both actors were, once again, sensational, Rapace proving to be so magnetic I weep for the poor actress who has to step into her shoes for director David Fincher’s rumored American remake.

But I do have serious reservations about the narrative itself. There are times where it almost felt like Frykberg and Alfredson were making things up as they went along, and what worked extremely well in Larsson’s prose doesn’t translate nearly as beautifully when streamlined for the cinema. The coincidences are almost laughable; a second-act car chase leading to a brutally violent yet weirdly dull boxing match borders on the absurd. The x Fi lm s

film often loses focus, going off on tangents involving characters nowhere near as interesting or as compelling as Lisbeth and Mikael continue to be.

It does not help that the whole thing climaxes in a cliffhanger that will likely infuriate those who have not had the chance to read the original novels. While the main storyline does wrap up the majority of its tangents, that doesn’t make the ones left hanging any less galling. The whole thing reminds me of how I felt as a kid watching the finale of Back to the Future Part II, and like Doc Brown being zapped away into nothingness, bearing witness to this yarn’s final minutes kind of made me want to scream in aghast fury.

If it sounds like I’m being harsh it is only because The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo set such a gloriously high bar, while The Girl Who Played with Fire floats along aimlessly well below it. When the film works, much like its predecessor, it is an enjoyable thrill ride. Unfortunately, even with its two stars delivering crackerjack performances, this sequel just doesn’t work enough to warrant the ticket price, making the much-hyped return of Lisbeth Salander a maddening disappointment.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN Contributing Writer The Girl Who Played with Fire Opening July 9 Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) has returned to Stockholm. Still haunted by the dirty deeds handed down by her court appointed guardian Nils Bjurman (Peter Andersson), she wants to make sure he understands the score, that the video of their little unreciprocated sexual romp still exists.

Besides, she has friends in Sweden, people dear to her heart, and while they can’t know her exact whereabouts, that doesn’t mean she still can’t drop by for a visit.

Fresh off his short incarceration, Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) is busy back at work editing Millennium, the noted Swedish political magazine known for breaking stories most news organizations are afraid to touch. One of his reporters is on the verge of breaking a major story involving Eastern European sex trafficking, but when he and his girlfriend are brutally murdered, things take a sudden and unforeseen turn.

Making matters even more perplexing is the fact that Lisbeth is the chief suspect, her fingerprints all over the murder weapon.

Mikael doesn’t believe his former ally is to blame for this crime and is sure someone is setting her up as the fall guy in order to keep the sex trade story from coming to light.

Soon the investigative journalist is using all of his tricks to uncover the truth, digging towards conclusions so preposterous they cannot help but be genuine. But Lisbeth is also on the case, her reasons for proving her

innocence having more to do with familial revenge than they do the pursuit of justice.

The second installment in the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy, The Girl Who Played with Fire picks up a few months after the labyrinthine events of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But where that cinematic adaptation of the popular crime potboiler was an absorbing mystery filled with twists and turns and featured two unique characters easy to root for, this sequel is a rather slapdash effort that’s sadly nowhere near as effective.

While Lisbeth and Mikael continue to fascinate, the mystery they’re drowning in isn’t very interesting, and the surprises feel more coincidental and haphazard than organic and natural. Jonas Frykberg’s screenplay isn’t nearly as sharp or as pointed as the one for the first film, while new director Daniel Alfredson can’t build tension or create atmosphere as effortlessly as Niels Arden Oplev did in the original.

This middle chapter is a seriously bumpy ride, and by the time it was all over my enthusiasm for this series had taken a swift jolt that I’m not sure it’s going to be able to recover from in time for the October release of the final epic, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

I’m making this sound worse than it actually is. There are some admittedly sensational moments, and the opening confrontation between Lisbeth and Bjurman bristles with tension. There’s an awesome scene at a secluded countryside home between the diminutive computer hacker and a couple of

There’s an orphaned royal infant to save who is handed off to traveling theatricals, and amusing use of puppets for ghosts.

The current production gains from having several competent actors, including Susan Connors and Alice Bridgforth, as the older witches, and Alicia Barta and Todd Van Der Ark as the Duke (female) and Duchess (male), who gamely try to introduce the arch silliness the play demands. However, there is a real problem with pacing, and the style is not carried through, so some performers are just grim, rather than playing seriously for laughs, and most everything takes too long. There are many short scenes needlessly slowed down for unnecessary set changes that don’t add much, visually.

If you are a fan of the Discworld series, the play might hold more fun for you, though it’s not necessary to be familiar with either Discworld or Shakespeare.

Next up at Open Circle will be a festival of 24 one-acts in August, which will give much more variety to please just about any palate.

Wyrd Sisters Open Circle Theater Through July 17 Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series of novels is very popular. He writes in a tonguein-cheek style of light fantasy, and Stephen Briggs’ adaptation of the sixth book in the series, Wyrd Sisters, continues that light tone and is in production now at Open Circle Theater. Unfortunately, the play is not really ready for primetime, most suitable for high schools or other young people’s productions. There are a few vaguely scatological references, probably easily removed or adjusted. There is an intriguing message about the power of words, and it can be interesting to think of how it applies to propaganda in politics nowadays.

Steve Miller Band July 14, Chateau St. Michelle Memories of my older brothers locking me in the basement come to mind whenever I hear the Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like an Eagle” or “Rock’n Me.” While most of Miller’s work is reduced to college dorm parties, such as “Space Cowboy” and “Take the Money and Run,” his earlier compositions reflect a bluesier, funkier, and more experimental artist. In what could be a rowdy atmosphere at the otherwise quiet Chateau St. Michelle, here’s hoping Miller and company put “Serenade” on their set list.

Truth be told, I’m bummed about the cancellation of Rihanna’s tour kickoff at White River Amphitheatre, a concert I was looking forward to since the day it was announced.

But the show – or rather, shows – must go on, and here are eight of them worth noting in July.

Minus the Bear July 17, The Showbox Market Seattle indie quintet Minus the Bear is still waiting for a breakthrough years after living in the shadows of fellow success stories Death Cab for Cutie and Fleet Foxes.

The group’s 2010 release Omni has been well received by critics, but is it enough to propel them to stardom?

Either way, their live performances are said to be mesmerizing – and in front of a local crowd at The Showbox Market, they’ll be at their finest.

Songs to Offend Almost Everyone July 14-15 Julia’s on Broadway Cabaret legend Sharon McNight will bring her critically acclaimed show Songs to Offend Almost Everyone to Julia’s on Broadway on July 14 and 15 at 8:30 p.m.

Throughout the show McNight tackles the topics of society, sex, religion, hypocrisy, and lust in song and commentary.

“The show is called Songs to Offend Almost Everybody, so I cover a lot of ground,” McNight told SGN. “It started as a joke that just took off. People like to laugh and there are poignant parts too.”

The entire show is an updated party record from the 1950s made famous by artists like Belle Barth and Rusty Warren – only offensive and risqué.

“What to expect,” she said, “is I will sing on-pitch and not throw stuff at the audience.

It’s a good time and a lot of laughs!”

McNight says she will cover songs by songwriters from pop to Broadway to country.

Fans of cabaret know McNight. She first rose to prominence in San Francisco’s cabaret scene during the 1980s, winning five Cable Car Awards for Best Cabaret Artist

in rapid succession. Since her rise to fame, McNight has been a Broadway Tony nominee, a Theater World Award winner, and winner of New York’s coveted MAC Award for Best Cabaret Show.

McNight has appeared everywhere you could imagine.

She’s graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, theaters, concert halls, colleges, and cabarets from Los Angeles to Berlin.

“It was a time to celebrate and fight for civil rights,” she said. “I’m always ready to party and Gay audiences are more uninhibited and free-wheeling. I’ve always enjoyed the company of men, especially when there are no strings. It seemed a perfect fit.”

“In the beginning, guys would bring their mother or father to the club to meet me,” McNight said.

“I used to introduce the parents from the stage – for many it was a way for them to come out to their family.”

Over the years, McNight has performed in a number of shows to help raise money for LGBT organizations, including benefits in Seattle.

“I once performed at the Improv in a benefit for an AIDS hospice in Seattle. I had a friend in Seattle called Sicky Ricky who I met in San Francisco when I first started out,” she told SGN. “They told me after the show that he had died in that hospice.”

McNight was recently a part of the San Francisco Pride Parade for its 40th year. “My first parade was in 1978,” she told SGN. “Several parades and AIDS benefits later, I was chosen as the first straight women to be the Grand Marshal in 1986.”

Puddletown Squares Classes Seattle GLBT favorite Puddletown Squares invite you to come learn the ABCs of square dancing at the first of their annual summer “intro” events, starting on Wednesday, July 14. Being led by internationally known local favorite caller Mike DeSisto, this energetic, non-traditional and fun evening will give beginners a chance to get a taste of what modern western square dancing is all about, with help from experienced “angels” from Puddletown Squares.

As Washington’s only GLBT square dance organization, their members and regular participants come from all around the Puget Sound area, from Everett to Tacoma, and Vashon to Woodinville!

Mercy was also reminded that the festival musicians like the acoustics at Benaroya better. She had to agree.

After the recital, she went outside to try out the other change, sitting in the Garden of Remembrance rather than the grounds at Lakeside. There were some distractions from the charm of Erin Keefe (violin), Robert De Maine (cello), and Andrew Neiman (piano) playing Debussy’s “Trio for Violin and Piano in G Major.” Only five other people decided to join her, compared to a much larger number in the old space.

There was traffic noise until an usher suggested sitting alongside the side street. That space only had stone seats.

Mercy moved her wire chair there. Three people tried the cold ones, but two wound up Steve Ea rle leaving by the end of the first piece.

Barber’s “Quartet for Strings” was heartbreakingly beautiful, played by James Eh- tracted two more bystanders to the fountain nes (violin), Andrew Wan (violin), Cynthia seats.

Steve Earle Mercy and Cuteness enjoyed Steve Earle’s warm-up act at Zoo Tunes, Joe Ely. High points of his performance were “Me and Billie the Kid,” “Give Me a Ride to Heaven,” and “Circle of Love.”

Then Earle took the stage with his honest voice, good guitar work and luscious harmonica. He opened nicely with “Come Back Woody Guthrie,” “The Devil’s Right Hand,” and “My Old Friend the Blues.”

Steve talked a lot about one of his heroes, the late songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Earle made some of his stories about Townes into talking blues.

He sang Van Zandt’s most famous song, “Pancho and Lefty.”

He closed with a song Earle wrote for the series Treme, about New Orleans “This City Will Never Drown.”

Cuteness pointed out there were similarities between the Meshell Ndegeocello and Steve Earle concerts. Both focused on mentors who were political workers.

Meshell Ndegeocello Cuteness turned Mercy on to the Bisexual performer Meshell Ndgeocello, and Mercy is glad she did. Ndegeocello’s band (Scott Parr on bass and Chris Bruce on guitar) was tight and rocked out at the Triple Door last week. She has a big, beautiful voice and plays funky bass. Cuteness said, “She’s really hot.”

Meshell talked a lot about the importance of Gil Scott Heron as a mentor to her.

She sang some of his songs, most notably “Whitey’s on the Moon,” and “Home is Where the Hatred Is,” and “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” She played another of her heroes, Cornel West, reciting a poem about romanticism.

Her rendition of “Free Will” caused yelps of satisfaction from the crowd. She went on to some originals that were also delightful, including “The Hand I Used to Hold,” “You Are My Only Saving Grace,” and “No One is Faithful.”

Cuteness liked the butchness of Ndegeocello’s look, but also did some research and found some photos of the singer wearing dresses well, too.

Puddletown Squares teaches and incorporates genderneutral square dancing. This means that anyone has the chance to dance either role (“boy” or “girl”), in casual clothing, with a community of supportive Gay, Lesbian, and straight friends in their mid-20s through mid-70s. You’re just as likely to be square dancing to the beat of pop music, salsa, ethnic, Sinatra, or Madonna, as you are to C&W or bluegrass music.

The anticipation is over, sort of. M.I.A. posted tracks from her forthcoming album Maya exclusively on MySpace this week, among them “XXXO,” “Steppin’ Up,” “It Takes Muscle,” and the previously heard “Born Free.” The best cut I’ve listened to thus far is “Story to Be Told” – the clash of pulsating electronic beats and distorted, odd chants is infectious. Maya is a short departure from M.I.A.’s first two albums, Arular and Kala, in that it’s less pop-dance and more rock-electronic dub – at times, it gets really busy with a multitude of unexpected sounds. Moe Bar (1425 10th Avenue) is hosting a CD listening party on July 11 (8 p.m.) – hear it before you buy it – where you can congregate with fellow M.I.A. faithful, and there are many in Seattle of all sexual varieties.

Blues singer Bettye LaVette, who is near selling out her one-night performance next week at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, will open eight shows on Robert Plant’s upcoming tour. The Grammy-nominated diva’s latest work, Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, obviously got the Led Zeppelin lead singer’s attention, as it did a legion of new fans. via O’Stayformore’s infamous Bacon Strip has become one of my must-dos for weekend entertainment. If you had any sense at all, or good taste for bad taste, then you’ll agree: This Gay variety show is delicious!

According to Sylvia, the show’s creator, Bacon Strip has been going since the first Saturday night of November, 2005. “I had been frustrated at the lack of really creative performance outlets in Seattle, and finding my personal bookings kind of light, I decided it would be good to start a monthly show,” she told SGN. “So I sat down with some friends and came up with Bacon Strip.”

What Sylvia and her friends created is an ever-changing monthly drag show that serves up laughter, costumes, and outrageous acts inside the infamous Re-bar. And ,of course, besides the endless list of talented and creative performers, Bacon Strip would not be complete with Meat Man Raymondo who walks around with serving trays dripping with – you guessed it – bacon.

“My goal is having fun, and to create a loving and interesting environment for all,” Sylvia said. “Celebrate craziness.”

On July 3, I attended my first Bacon Strip.

I knew from the show’s lineup – Eva Androgyny, Mark “Mom” Finley, and Aleksa Manilla, to name a few – that this was going to be an amazing show. The July theme (each month has a different theme) was “Real Drag Queens of Capitol Hill.” What I wasn’t expecting, but was pleasantly surprised with, was the creativity that went into the acts. I love me a good old-fashioned drag show – but what Homo Arigato, Maxine Delacunt, Disgrace Jones, Otter Pop, and Kerry & James served up was nothing short of performance art at its finest. Unique, perverted, and laugh-out-loud hilarious, Bacon Strip does what some shows fall short of: entertaining the audience from start to finish. Plus, as an added bonus, there’s a pretty kick-ass dance party immediately following the show. Far from pretentious, the performers, as well as the iconic Sylvia O’Stayformore, can be found mingling with guests, having a cocktail, and shaking a tail feather before and after the show.

“I think Bacon Strip works because it is not your typical drag show,” Sylvia told SGN. “It puts a new spin on the old vaudeville shows. I believe that the certain shock factor it adds makes the audience think and laugh. I also think that the performers themselves love the show because they get to push the envelope and have a great time doing so.”

Sylvia says that over the past few months, she’s noticed the show is drawing in a whole new crowd of people. “I believe that Seattle has been missing a show like this,” she said, “and Bacon Strip fills that void.”

Sylvia said that without Re-bar, Bacon Strip never would have gotten off the ground. “The management was kind enough to find a weekend night that I could do this,” she told SGN. Due to the five-year success of Bacon Strip, Sylvia says that Re-bar is giving her a chance to try out a new show this fall.

Sylvia says she is thankful for the support Seattle has given her over the past years along with all the performers and audience members who’ve been loyal fans of Bacon Strip.

A special element in that coherence was the extremely articulate and informative narrative between sets by David Armstrong, producing executive artistic director of The 5th Avenue Theatre. His enthusiasm and intelligence made one feel you’d have to be crazy not to love this music.

So integrated were the SWC and SMC that the printed program did not even distinguish between which numbers were sung by which chorus or by both. Sensible Shoes (from the SWC) and Captain Smartypants (from SMC) both performed and at one point joined forces for an effective condensation of Sweeney Todd in five minutes! The guest soloist for the evening was Megan Chenovick, who sang “Glitter and Be Gay” with superb showmanship as well as excellent coloratura. She got the biggest applause all evening by far.

Having met my partner Dale in the second tenor section 29 years ago, I can say I have attended (or sang in) every program ever put on by SMC, many of which have included some effective dance numbers. We moved up a notch this time, however, with the appearance of members of the Spectrum Dance Theater. Their contribution was a highlight of the whole program.

When I was a poor student in NYC, I was fortunate enough to see the original cast in West Side Story not once, but twice. Most of the numbers in this concert from that show stood up quite well to comparisons with the original … not the same raw punch of the Broadway production, but very respectable nonetheless. Because I am quick to tears generally, the most effective numbers of the whole evening came at the end of the printed program: “One Hand, One Heart” and “Somewhere,” both of course from West Side Story. Sondheim got his share of the program, but it was the Bernstein that moved me most.

continued from cover Douglas, is as good as ever, with some selections exceeding expectations (which are already high for ZinZanni regulars).

For the current show, Douglas and the ZinZanni chefs start with an appetizer in place as patrons are seated. This delightful plate contains a French country pork paté with pistachio salt, a selection of olives, and crisp cornichons, delightful mini-pickles that offer a perfect contrast to the rich paté.

Each course is served between the show’s mixture of clowns, acrobats, magicians, and singers (pop and classical). The waitstaff is carefully choreographed for each entrance of the menu selections – one waiter is a talented actor who actually often headlines in shows at the 5th Avenue and other musical theaters. It all adds to the fun and truly makes the evening something special.

The three-hour dinner and cabaret show are well-paced. Seating starts at 6 p.m. for evening performances, which begin promptly at 7 p.m. The ZinZanni orchestra starts the show. Songs, skits, specialty acts introduce the cast and the concept, with a break at about 7:30 p.m. for the “creamy, dreamy asparagus and leek soup, dressed with a real pepper cream” garnish. Then comes more entertainment and the entrance of the entrée choices. For the current edition of the long running hit – termed “the hottest ticket in town” by the New York Times several years back – diners have three choices for the entrée.

This scribe and his guest took the recommendation of the ZinZanni PR director and opted for the filet of beef. Cooked to perfection (the ZinZanni kitchen was able to successfully prepare one filet rare and one well done with no apparent problem – a rarity in many downtown restaurants), the steaks exceeded expectations. Grilled halibut received raves at a neighboring table, and the mushroom strata, the vegetarian selection,

was also highly praised.The entertainment for this edition is the usual mix of European headliners and U.S. talent.

Francine Reed, a powerful African American blues singer – best known for her backup and duet work with headliners like Lyle Lovett, Miles Davis, Etta James, and Smokey Robinson – rattles the ZinZanni rafters with powerful versions of “Send In The Clowns,” “I’ve Got You Under My Skin,” “Bridge Over Troubled Waters,” and other terrific selections. Juliana Rambaldi, termed a “bright-voiced beacon” by The New Yorker magazine, is a Seattle resident with a long history of operatic leads in Europe and the U.S. Her opera selections were musical highlights of the evening.

Veronin, the single-named Ukraine illusionist, returns to Seattle and gives the current show its title character. His stage nickname – “The Maestro” – is fitting. He has appeared with ZinZanni 21 times since the original Seattle show in 1998. He is a major star on the European cabaret circuit.

Other impressive performers include Elena Borodina, a Russian hand balancer. She is an amazing athlete who is noted for turning a gymnastic staple into a true work of art. The Collins Brothers, a Berlin duo who are not named Collins and are not brothers, are master trapeze artists and (like most of the cast) sublime comedians. Peter Pitofsky, who has been a ZinZanni regular since 2002, is a glorious circus clown who teams with other cast members – male and female – in a memorable Pitofsky “Brothers” acrobatic routine. (Pitofsky was evidentially distracted as this reviewer scribbled notes and frantically tried to find the biographies of the “brothers” in the ZinZanni program – he stalked over and tore the pamphlet out of my hands, threw it on the table, and mockingly sneered, “read at home.” The audience, always on their toes, roared with laughter.

Throughout the evening, the wide-eyed Svetlana, the single-named Russian contortionist, charmed the audience with her reoccurring role as the puppet doll who comes to life – regulars at Pacific Northwest Ballet will be reminded of the recent performance of Coppella with a similar title character.

Her amazing performance remains vivid a week after the show.

Ukrainian juggler Sergiy Krutikov, the talented and Canadian Ssens Duo, and magician Brandon Rabe, a native Hawaiian whose grandfather was a New Orleans riverboat gambler, add to the memorable moments.

A few more tips about the evening’s fine food: All selections were beautifully presented with appropriate accompaniments – mashed potatoes with the beef, rice with the fish, etc.

ZinZanni has recently added some a la carte items to the planned five-course menu.

Sautéed shitake mushrooms seemed to be a popular addition. Fans of the old standby “surf and turf” could add a filet, at $9.95, to the halibut plate. An artisan cheese sampler gives diners the cheese course if so desired.

A full bar and extensive wine selections add a festive element for many patrons. A $39 “wine flight” added a preselected wine to each course in the preplanned menu.

Wines by the glass, starting at $7, or by the bottle, soaring to $350 for select champagnes, can turn this “special night out” into a truly unforgettable outing.

As the time sped by, dessert (a tangy lemon bar with fresh berries) arrived at 9:40 p.m. The finale, with Reed and the cast singing “When You’re Smiling,” found the clock at 9:50 p.m. The final curtain at 9:52 – with a boost from Maestro Norman Durkee and the Orchestra DeVille – found the nearcapacity audience in broad smiles – just like in the song. After a quick pause in the Teatro gift shop, we were back on the street, in the car and headed home shortly after 10 p.m.

Certainly a night to remember.

Considering that the three-hour ZinZanni experience includes a five-course dinner and a first-class show, the night is truly a festive celebration and totally unlike anything else in town.
