Silversun Pickups’ Brian Aubert shares his list of likes

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Silversun Pickups July 31 Paramount Theatre Earlier this year I spoke with Brian Aubert, lead vocalist and guitarist of Silversun Pickups, just after the band walked the Grammy Awards red carpet as a Best New Artist nominee. Though the Southern California four-piece had risen in the alternative music ranks since the release of their 2006 debut Carnavas, it took three years for major recognition to follow.

Silversun Pickups make a welcome return to Seattle this weekend (Paramount Theatre, July 31), their first headlining performance touting 2009’s sophomore recording, Swoon - visit www.stgpresents.org for ticket information. From his home in Los Angeles, here’s more of my exclusive chat with Brian Aubert of Silversun Pickups.

version of “We Are the World,” did you?

Aubert: Yeah, we added ourselves in there. We watched that “We Are the World” thing recently and it’s really nice, it’s really lovely that they did that. It’s going to raise a lot of money for a great cause. But, I was just kind of shocked when they added Michael Jackson in it. And then I watched the old one, and the new one made me realize how many different kind of personalities there were in the ‘80s vs. now in pop music. Everybody was just so different, especially Cyndi Lauper when she starts singing. All those voices are all so different. That’s what I think is exciting about someone like Lady GaGa, who’s adding something interesting.

Rodriguez: I’ve interviewed her before and she’s out there, but I think she’s got a really great future ahead of her.

Aubert: She writes her own songs, she plays amazingly, and she has massive ambition. She’s putting a little Grace Jones back in the world.

Rodriguez: Does the band have a Gay posse, and do you have a BGF – Best Gay Friend?

Aubert: We have a lot of Gay friends. I’m trying to think if I have a favorite, which I don’t. [Laughs.]

If I have a favorite, it’s a Lesbian friend of ours. Because you have to have a token Gay friend, right? A friend of every ethnicity, every sexuality. [Laughs.]

Rodriguez: It’s nice to see rock bands and Gay people getting along.

Aubert: I grew up in Los Angeles, and when you grow up in a metropolis that’s what you’re used to – different cultures everywhere. One thing that’s always scary is going somewhere where there’s only one type of person – that’s frightening to me, it’s a bit alarming. Then you have something like Prop 8 that happens and it’s like, “What

the fuck?” It’s like the biggest downer ever.

I know a lot of people who were really hurt by that. It’s just such an insane thing. It’s 2010 and modernity is knocking at the door and you’re going to have to face it, you can’t fight it. When you live in your safe bubbles like Seattle, you start to believe the world thinks like you do, and they just don’t.

Rodriguez: And we can’t just hug it out.

It’s a battle that will go on for a very long time.

Aubert: Iowa is a great example because it’s usually the first with women’s rights and civil rights. Now we have same-sex marriage in Iowa, and it’s a great, great thing.

It’s a massive embarrassment to California, being how California is supposed to be this liberal sort of side. Usually when Iowa makes decisions like that, it’s the sneeze that can potentiate the cold.

Rodriguez: I had no idea you were from Hawaii.

Aubert: Half my family is from Hawaii.

My mom was raised on Oahu. My grandmother was born and raised in Waimea Canyon on Kauai, of all places. So I spent all my summers on Oahu.

Rodriguez: I love going back there. As soon as I land, I make a Rainbow Drive-In run before checking into my hotel. I arrive at the check-in desk with a plate lunch in one hand, and maybe a Hawaiian shave ice in the other.

Aubert: There’s a place called Island Snow, which is actually a chain. But there’s one in Kailua with shave ice and ice cream

at the bottom. It’s ridiculous! Yeah, people don’t get the plate lunch. When I bring friends to Hawaii I have to explain to them the cross-Poly culture of all Asians – and plate lunches are special. I’m a big manapua fan, too.

Rodriguez: Where was “Panic Switch” written?

Aubert: “Panic Switch” was a song that came about near the ending of the writing cycle. It actually started in my bedroom, to be honest. We had about 16 songs at that point. We were just going crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy, and learning these 16 songs and changing and rehearsing, and finally I just told everybody that we were fine and there would be no more songs. And then, of course, I went home and started thinking about the record. It reminded me of a nervous breakdown, the way the record was sounding. So I started writing “Panic Switch” and another song called “Surrounded,” which made it on the album as well, that night. It’s one of those songs that came out very organically and quite quick.

Rodriguez: After the show, when you head out for gin and tonics at a bar, do you get hit on by both sides?

Aubert: I’m pretty elusive, like I’m usually not around too much at the end of it all.

It does happen sometimes, but I keep myself tied away.

Rodriguez: You’re playing hard to get?

Aubert: [Laughs.] Because I am hard to get!

Dudley Saunders: It was sort of accidental, actually. I was in New York. I was part of the avant garde performance art world, and I did this work that was part music, part text. And then what happened is people kept asking me to play more of the music, and it was around the time Nirvana came out – he’s [Kurt Cobain] telling about really horrible, nightmarish emotions and everyone just couldn’t get enough of it. But from a performance artist, it comes from spoken word, and people have trouble listening to it, and it’s much more painful to listen to. So it struck me that music was a more acceptable container for the kind of content I wanted to put out there.

Rodriguez: Has it been an easy road, or have you met the challenges that other singer-songwriters have come across?

Saunders: It’s been incredibly difficult, partly because of the Gay element. There’s a lot of Gay sexuality in my songs in a kind of overt way, which I actually found that Gay audiences around the country have a hard time taking it as such. They were sort of humiliated by hearing what the songs were about, so I’d get a lot of hostility about that. For a while, the better audiences were straight guys.

Rodriguez: Are you saying that Gay au-

diences have been more critical of your music?

Saunders: Gay audiences earlier in my career had a much harder time; they found it much too confrontational to listen to. I got a lot of rejection from Gay audiences. Straight audiences – not mainstream, but alternative – were much more willing to accept it as a world they didn’t know about. It was edgy, or it pushed boundaries for them.

Rodriguez: Before your first trip to Seattle, what had you heard of it?

Saunders: My main thoughts about Seattle were old west songs because of that damn TV show when I was a kid. There was some TV show with the lyrics, “the bluest skies in Seattle,” so I had this old west fantasy of it. Then, of course, everyone knows it from the Kurt Cobain fame. Beyond that, I didn’t really know a whole lot about it.

Rodriguez: Have you met or played with any high-profile musicians?

Saunders: I just found out my neighbor is dating the lead singer of the Crash Kings, and apparently each morning they listen to me playing guitar – and he really likes me.

I know some people who I consider midrange famous. I know David Poe, I think he’s like a KEXP person that they play on there. Duncan Sheik has been supportive of

me – in fact, it was his bass player who produced my last record.

Rodriguez: Duncan has certainly expanded his career in the last five years or so.

Saunders: He has, and he’s completely cool. He was very complimentary about that record.

Rodriguez: When you go on tour, are you doing a solo acoustic performance or do you bring a full band?

Saunders: Most of the time, I do solo acoustic. I have a very expressive and textured way of playing the guitar, and I can kind of make a whole band out of my playing. It makes it more intimate between me and the audience, and it’s certainly cheaper, too.

Rodriguez: For someone who’s just bought a guitar and is exploring a music career, what advice do you give to them?

Saunders: It sounds obvious, but the first thing you have to do is find out what kind of music and what part of playing you’re very, very excited to do. I hope you don’t have to do what I did, which is have this weird, peculiar music that you can’t explain and that you have to spend years and years developing. You’ve got to immediately find out what is exciting to you on a day-to-day basis and follow that.

Brian Aubert: Yeah, it’s funny. MGMT was up for it too, and their record came out two or maybe three years ago.

Rodriguez: Nevertheless, it’s good exposure.

Aubert: The nomination was exposure, for sure. A lot of people that never heard of you will check you out just on that. We definitely saw that happen. The whole thing was so bizarre. The show was long, my friend. I think it’s still going on.

Deliberation thought it was the change of location. Before the concert, artistic director Toby Saks asked how many people were there for the first time. About a quarter of the audience raised their hands.

Schumann’s “Fantasy Pieces for Cello and Piano, Op 73,” featured Adam Neiman’s knowing fingers on the piano and Robert DeMane’s passionate bowing. It was nice to see Emily Daggett lead the energetic quartet of Stefan Jackiw on violin, Richard O’Neill on viola, and Jeremy Turner on cello in “Quartet for Strings in E-Flat Major, Op 12,” by Mendelssohn. That number received a standing ovation that started with half the audience and gradually increased.

When Mercy joked about the half-assed ovation at intermission, Kapacity predicted there was going to be an enthusiastic one for the last number. She was right. The quartet of Ida Levin on violin, Chen-Yen Chen on viola, Robert deMaine on cello and Ran Dank on piano did an amazing rendition of Brahms’ “Quartet for Piano and Strings in C Minor, Op 25.” fi le p

Music that won’t quit

Ottmar Liebert Mercy and her friend Jousts went to see Ottmar Liebert at the Triple Door, because Cuteness couldn’t find child care. There was no introduction for any of the first six mellow and delicious guitar songs. Mercy asked a neighbor if he knew the names of the nouveau flamenco originals, but he didn’t.

Mercy thought maybe Liebert, with his bald head and black clothing, didn’t speak English. After those numbers, Liebert announced the songs were from his new album, Pebble on the Path. And that the next song was titled “St. John,” but he gave the names of no other song.

Maybe someone had advised Liebert to shut up and play. The songs were too similar for Mercy to identify them from Liebert’s website, so she was pretty well screwed for sounding intelligent in her review of him.

She requested a set list, but none arrived.

His band, Luna Negra, played well together. John Dagin’s subtle, persistent bass had a range that amazed Mercy. At one point, Pancho Jousts said, “That sounds like a trombone.”

The morning of June 28, 1969, has been known in pop culture and Queer circles as The Stonewall Riots.

It’s curious, then, since we have such a recognizable and seemingly acceptable name tag for the most important moment in the history of Queerdom, that directors Kate Davis and David Heilbroner should decide to use the word “uprising” instead of “riots” in the title of their new documentary Stonewall Uprising. So I pulled out my dog-eared Merriam-Webster’s Pocket Dictionary (yes, I still use an actual dictionary, and I do so just because) and looked up the two words.

Though I love the idea of semantically elevating the courageous acts of our forebears from riotous to revolutionary, I also love the legends of chaotic grittiness infused in the images of street-brawling bull dykes, mocking drag queen chorus lines, and venom-spitting sissy boys using a parking meter as a battering ram before setting fires with stolen lighter fluid and Zippos. There is an undeniable power in the spontaneous collective agreement to resistance, a sort of Queer kismet sporting a No. 10 can of whoop-ass and laced with glorious camp and comedic deflection.

The question, riot or uprising, comes down to semantics, so I’ll split the difference. The events of early hours of June 28, 1969, were riots, plain and simple. That evening, a beautiful, random, and disorderly mob refused the status quo and their actions sparked violent public disorder. Over the next three days, an uprising was born,

She accepted the bobblehead, then left it in the media room after she found out Cuteness had gotten one.

The Shock played hot and fast, but the Storm played much hotter and faster. The Storm led 40-32 at the half. They increased their lead, so they had enough slack to play the second string a bit and still beat them, 75-59. Svetlana Abrosimova was the winning player of the game, with her string of three-pointers equaling 15.

This puts them 20-2, tying Houston for the WNBA’s record for fastest start. If they win against Phoenix this week, they clinch their playoff position in the Western Conference.

fomenting a community and resulting in a movement that would change the lives of Queer folks forever and result in a contemporary Queer culture that continues to fight for the rights and safety of people in Seattle, Belgrade, Beijing, Buenos Aires, and Lilongwe. I like it both ways.

Stonewall Uprising is a nicely turned out film from the director of one of my favorite Queer documentaries of all time, Southern Comfort. The eyewitness accounts of graying Queer folks who participated with youthful exuberance are personal and yet

capture the essence of the collective emotional moment. The eyewitness account of Seymour Pine, the retired police officer who led the initial raid on the Stonewall, is priceless in its honesty. The clips from the ‘60sera Sid Davis Production of Boys Beware and the 1966 CBS Reports story by Mike Wallace, “The Homosexuals,” are stunning reminders of the power of fear and how far we’ve come.

In recent years, MTV has endured criticism for playing fewer music videos and more reality TV. However, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is applauding the music video channel for being the Gay-friendliest among all other networks.

MTV held a solid lead among 15 networks for its representation of Gay characters last season. MTV has received GLAAD’s firstever “Excellent” rating in the organization’s annual survey of Gay-friendly programming.

In its fourth annual Network Responsibility Index, GLAAD found that of MTV’s 207.5 hours of original prime-time programming, 42% included content reflecting the loves of LGBT people.

“From their inception, MTV programs like The Real World and America’s Best Dance Crew have offered richly diverse portrayals of Gay and Transgender people

that help Americans better understand and accept our community,” said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios.

Among broadcast networks, the CW was on top with 35%, while Fox ranked second with 30%. ABC was ranked as “Good” with 26%, while NBC was “Adequate” with 13%.

CBS’s 7% earned that network a “Failing” grade from the report.

Scoring high on cable with MTV were ABC Family, 37%; TNT, 34%; Showtime, 32%; Lifetime, 31%; and HBO, 26% – all received a “Good” rating.

The report assigned a “Failing” grade to USA, 4%; A&E, 3%; and TBS, 2%.

In order to rank the networks, GLAAD reviewed all prime-time programming – totaling some 4,787.5 hours – on the major broadcast networks between June 1, 2009 and May of this year. The study also examined all original prime-time programming – 1,227.75 hours – on 10 prominent cable networks. This included dramas, comedies,

Berlin and Hamburg, Germany’s vibrant hubs for history and Gay culture

These metropolises account for over 5 million residents, and each has bustling, trendy Gay districts with nightlife to suit all types – you’ll never be bored or feel unwelcomed, as each is open-minded to the Gay lifestyle and culture. In fact, Berlin is so open-minded that straight couples frequent some of the hottest Gay clubs in town, and some have made successful attempts in utilizing the “dark rooms” for their own promiscuous activities. Despite their size, Hamburg and Berlin are easy to get around in, thanks to great subway systems and public buses. Beyond what you’ve seen and heard about this amazing and intriguing country – its history, division and unification, rise to a financial superpower, world beer capital – the new Germany is brimming with exciting changes that can only truly be witnessed in person. GETTING THERE Similar to France, getting to Germany is as hassle-free as a single flight. Lufthansa (www.lufthansa.com) flies nonstop between Seattle and Frankfurt, with flight time just under 10 hours. The airline has terrific inflight entertainment and food, and for business travelers, a gratifying arrivals lounge in select airports. The Frankfurt airport has both local and long-distance train stations, giving you the option of staying overnight and traveling cross-country to Hamburg or Berlin the next day, or making an immediate jaunt after your flight. Train tickets should be purchased in advance of your U.S. departure via Rail Europe (www. raileurope.com), and upon arrival at the Frankfurt airport, look for “D.B.” signage for assistance. ICE trains (high-speed) are commonly used throughout Germany, and the on-board service, whether in first class or coach, is extremely helpful and comfortable. Students, families, and tourists comprise a significant percentage of coach pas-

sengers, so if you want more privacy, space and quiet, then pay extra for first-class reservations and look for platform signs indicating specific boarding for first class – otherwise, you’ll have to board coach and drag your luggage all the way to the first-class section. Connecting flights on Lufthansa to Hamburg or Berlin are frequent from Frankfurt, and getting to Berlin’s Tegel Airport takes about an hour and 20 minutes.

Berlin’s main train station and within walking distance to historical landmarks, museums, and major subway stops. Rooms are stylish, yet understated – the silver bedboards, rising almost to the ceiling, and matching armchairs add contemporary sparkle to what might otherwise be standard, dull sleeping quarters. Large shower stalls, soft-as-feather mattresses, wall-mounted flatscreen TVs, a posh lobby, and an amazing breakfast buffet are some of the amenities at Arcotel John F, preferred by traveling businessmen and upscale tourists. I very much liked this hotel, especially for its location and upbeat atmosphere. Another suggestion is Lux 11 (www.lux-eleven. com), where rock stars like Jared Leto and those who attended last year’s MTV Europe Music Awards have stayed and partied. This hip boutique hotel, wedged in the Mitte (or “middle”) district, in close proximity to Gay bars and five minutes from Alexanderplatz train station, has 72 rooms on four floors with a popular restaurant-lounge at street level, where I had coffee with hot DJ turned very hot hotel manager Dirk Dreyer. Men’s and women’s separate amenity kits, an abundance of clean and fresh towels, nouveau deco furnishings, and a front desk that allowed me to use their own laptop to confirm my next day’s flight reservation are some of Lux 11’s too-fabulous amenities.

BERLIN Berlin is the Gay mecca of Germany, despite Cologne hosting the 2010 Gay Games. It’s a city with endless possibilities for the non-hetero traveler, and anyone with a very open mind. With multiple Gay districts – primarily Schöneberg, Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg – and dozens upon dozens of bars to suit everyone from leather daddies to alternative hipsters to furry bears to strapping jocks, Berlin is the place that has it all. Ask your hotel for a “Friends: The Gay Map” or go online at www.gaymap.info, and also grab copies of Gab or Blu magazines at the nearest bookstore for directions and addresses. Another suggestion, which I actually used in Berlin, is the personal guidance of Berlinagenten (www.berlinagenten.com) – it’s a bit pricey, but tour guru Henrik Tidefjard knows the city inside-out and can take you directly to the hottest bars (and possibly past the velvet ropes), and can save you time and stress in tackling the beast that is Berlin. For bears and cubs (and those hunting them), try Woof in Schöneberg, or the more sedate Bärenhöhle in Prenzlauer Berg. A great cruising spot is Greifbar, also in Prenzlauer Berg, where the “dark room” has plenty to observe or participate in – at select bars, ring the outdoor bell and wait to be allowed entry. My favorite was Zum schmutzigen Hobby in Prenzlauer Berg, owned by famous drag star Nina Queer – it displays a mix of charm and kitsch, and is popular with young trendsetters and has attractive bartenders, not to mention a men’s bathroom plastered with straight porn. Down the street from Zum schmutzigen Hobby is the small, low-key Bar Gargarin, where German actor Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds, The Bourne Ultimatum) is known to frequent. Also worth noting, Scheune and Blue Boy Bar in Schöneberg, SchwuZ and Barbie Bar in Kreuzberg, and Berlin’s oldest Gay bar, Schoppenstube in Prenzlauer Berg.

SEE / DO Before going to the historical sites in Berlin, spend an hour at the Schwules Museum (www.schwulesmuseum.de), or The Gay Museum, tucked away in a back lot on the busy Mehringdamm street. From documents on male prostitution in the 1880s and 1890s to a dress worn by a transvestite in 1919 to mugshots of imprisoned Gay men during “The Dark Period,” The Schwules Museum is an absolute must-see for GLBT travelers. Open every afternoon from 2-6 p.m. except Tuesdays, its two-floor layout is crammed with videos, photos, print materials and clothing that chronicles Germany’s one-time opposition to the Gay liftestyle to its gradual acceptance of the culture, one of the most tolerant in all of Europe. The library, which gladly accepts old magazines, videos, or other Gay media material, is open to students and researchers around the world.

Wockner: What has caused Equality California to give you this award [The Equality Ally Award] tonight?

McCormack: I’d like to think that I used what small-P pulpit I had as Will to be vocal on behalf of the community. In many cases, it was on behalf of AIDS-related organizations. ... When it came to Prop 8, I was asked, and responded whenever possible, to speak out as a straight man on behalf of the community. I was stunned that Prop 8 passed, I really was. I mean, I grew up in the theater; I’ve been around not just Gay men, but Gay men in relationships, long-term relationships, for a long time and I’ve been amazed at the fear and ignorance in this country at the concept. I mean, part of me understands; we all had parents that were conservative. I understand the fear of crazy Gay parades, but I don’t understand the opposite. Why be afraid of people settling down and getting married and living like everyone else? That fear makes me realize that what we’re dealing with here is a kind of illogical prejudice, a prejudice that is based on ignorance, on misguided religion, and it’s crucial for our kids, for my kid, that we change things now, we change things on a state level, we change things on a federal level. And the Gay community can be as vocal as they want, but they’re going to need straight allies and I want to be one of them. There are millions of us out there that want to do what we can on behalf of our Gay brothers and sisters. ...

My kid, in his class he’s got kids with two moms and kids with two dads; it’s going to be different when he’s in his 20s, but right now it’s still a fight to be had and I’ve done what little I could.

Wockner: You work in television. We may have lost Prop 8 because we lost the TV-ad war. The other side played dirty with those TV ads. They said things that weren’t true. Our side played nice – “freedom, justice, equality.” Suppose you were put in charge of the ads next time. What might you do differently?

McCormack: I think, talking to [Equality California Executive Director] Geoff Kors, he said [that] hopefully this time the prop is something to vote for, not against – that it is a vote for Gay marriage. That alone will help. “Say no, say no, say no” is a hard message to get there. “Say yes” – a positive message – will hopefully be easier. Hopefully, we start raising money earlier so that we don’t get outgunned by the Mormons or whoever had all the money last time. And hopefully we get more celebrities involved.

There’s a lot of celebrities that spoke out this time but weren’t necessarily in the commercials. If those faces could be there – and I’m perfectly willing to be one of them – that can sway people.

Wockner: Looking back at Will & Grace, there are a couple of ways in which the program was criticized: Jack was too flamboyant or stereotypical, and you never had sex.

Do you think for its time and place, Will & Grace really broke ground and that we should look back at it as something that really changed things?

McCormack: Will had as much sex on camera as anybody on Friends had on cam-

The museum is a touching memorial to those who lost their lives during the Holocaust, with authentic photographs, suitcases, dishes, and handwritten letters of the victims. Architecturally, the Jewish Museum is riveting. From across the street before entering, its snake-like design and eerie gray coloring stopped me in my tracks.

The interior is just as haunting, especially the Holocaust Tower – a 79-foot, hollow,

Will had lots of dates. Will was dating Patrick Dempsey and he married Taye Diggs. ...

I think that a lot of the rhetoric in the kind of anti-Will & Grace press was misguided and was from people that had stopped watching the show about three years earlier. A lot happened to Will with regards to romance, with regards to relationships and, like I said, he walked down the aisle in his own apartment with Taye. I think the show actually ended up being – as much as it got very outrageous near the end, it also got more outspoken.

And I think that we weren’t necessarily a show for the Gay community alone; we were for America to maybe start making some inroads. So, while Queer As Folk or something might have been a more true representation of how the Gay community, particularly in cities, lives, I don’t think you could find as many young Gay people that would say, “Because my parents watched Queer As Folk, I was able to come out to them.” What they do say is, “Because my mom loved Will Truman or thought Jack was funny, I was able to tell them when I was 15 or 17 that I was Gay,” and the show broke ground in that way.

Wockner: Is that what you’re proudest of?

McCormack: I’m proudest that we always worked to make a quality show, to make a funny show, and that the results of it – things like kids being able to come out to their parents, kids being able to walk with their head a little higher was a direct result of it. But we never got political, we never intended to get political, we were just a goofy, funny show.

Wockner: But if you can have the side effect of making the world a better place, that’s great.

McCormack: Absolutely. I’d like to think that we did. I’d like to think that we managed to walk that line where most of the Gay community enjoyed the show and liked the characters and appreciated the result, and that the straight community got to bone up on [something] a lot of them knew nothing about. For a lot of people in this country – it’s crazy – but Will and Jack were possibly the first two Gay men they ever met.

Wockner: And Sean Hayes officially, formally came out a few months ago – it was in The Advocate, I think, right? – and made an interesting statement: He said that he’d never really been in. ... I assume he was out on the show?

McCormack: Oh, yeah. The Sean I met in 1998 was out and was Gay. So, his choice to not talk about it in the press was his choice, and I’m proud of him now that he was vocal in The Advocate and, you know, everyone’s got to do it their own way.

Wockner: It’s like there’s different ways of being out. Twenty years ago it was very black and white – you were out or you were in the closet. But now there seems to be this thing: You can be out, but if you’ve never had the interview with The Advocate or The New York Times or People magazine, you’re somehow not completely out or fully out. ...

As a journalist, I struggle with how to describe certain people who haven’t done that interview yet.

McCormack: David Hyde Pierce just came out very recently. ... Everyone’s got their own journey and I think that there’s no question that good can be done in the straight world by a very prominent and loved Gay man or woman coming out. At the same time, it’s not their job or their responsibility.

I feel like everyone’s got their own time and place. unheated cylindrical space with a tiny slit at the top. This dark, empty room is perhaps a symbol of what Holocaust victims felt like – alone – and was too much for the woman next to me, who sobbed into a handful of tissue. Intersecting tunnels, outdoor garden, a student learning area, and visual exhibits give further account of the harsh climate under Hitler’s rule.

the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, and many others. Tours are conducted in 10 languages via headsets, and if visiting Berlin on a cold day, you can elect to stay on the bus the whole time and sightsee from your seat.

HAMBURG Hamburg is the second-largest city in Germany, billed as the “Venice of the North” for its scenic canals. The port city is also known for its harbor, which has progressively become a new district with just-built condominiums, restaurants, and an opera house.

It’s a beautiful urban destination to consider when traveling in the upper portion of the country, a four-hour train ride from Düsseldorf and under three hours to Berlin.

STAY You can’t ask for a better location to rest and play than Hotel Village (www.hotel-village.de), across the street from Hamburg’s main train station and blocks from one of the city’s Gay districts, and right next door to a Gay video arcade. Rooms at this fivestory property are over the top in decor, but the effort made to be unique was certainly noted, and the service was memorable while the breakfasts with salmon, caprese salad, baked bread, preserves, fresh fruit (kiwis, oranges, apples), and brewed coffee put a smile on my face each morning. Worth mentioning – and common in older European hotels – is the absence of an elevator, though the night clerk willingly carried my heaviest suitcase up three flights of stairs for me.

EAT / DRINK In Hamburg’s St. Pauli district, one of two known Gay areas and home to the city’s red light district, is a neighborhood restaurant so adorable that I wanted to fill out an application for work. Freudenhaus (www. stpauli-freudenhaus.de) is flamboyantly designed with Cupid fixtures and shirtless male cartoons, among other interesting ornaments. But instead of being tacky, it was cute and had the necessary pinches of class to appeal to the most sophisticated diner.

My traditional pork and fried potatoes dish, paired with a German red wine, in a warm, quiet ambiance with a pianist playing soft music, will be forever remembered. Also, never judge a menu by the city it’s in. Case in point: Chili Club (www.chilliclub.de), a chic Asian brasserie in Hamburg’s harbor that provided one of my favorite Thai-accented meals. Sushi rolls, sashimi, tandoori chicken, crispy duck salad, teriyaki chicken noodles, curries, and grilled fish are wellexecuted in spicy, sweet flavors that measure up to similar Asian dishes I’ve had in the States. Sushi with Hollandaise sauce and lemongrass-curry soup? Yum. For cocktails, the top floor of Hamburg’s fashionably forward Empire Riverside Hotel (www.empire-riverside.de) is where to go, as it offers a panoramic view of the city found nowhere else. 20 Up lounge is reasonably priced for drinks, even if for a cappuccino on a rainy evening. This place is slick and a chosen mingling spot by straights and Gays alike, so arrive early at night for a prime table or couch.

GAY NIGHTLIFE St. Pauli/Reeperbahn and St. Georg are Hamburg’s known Gay stomping grounds, and the latter is the most convenient if staying near the train station. Cube Bar is a small, modish lounge that woos young, good-looking men and female socialites (think Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City). The bartender didn’t speak English, but politely showed me which bottled beers were available and smiled consistently to make sure I was enjoying myself. If Cube Bar were in Seattle, I’d be a regular. Across town in the Reeperbahn, dance floors at Wunderbar and 136-Degrees are packed with local clubgoers, and you’ll find rustic pubs nearby to cool off in the wee hours of morning.

SEE / DO The subway system is easy to use, and a Hamburg Welcome Card – just like Berlin’s – will help with transportation costs and admissions to attractions. Free of charge is the Fish Market, on the banks of Elbe River, open Sunday mornings from 7 to 10 a.m.

and a great place to buy inexpensive souvenirs, have brunch, and mingle with the locals. BallinStadt (www.ballinstadt.com), also known as The Emigration Museum, is an educational field trip to one of the city’s poorest areas, requiring a 15-minute subway ride or short ferry trip. Retracing the journey of German people and other Europeans who fled to the United States, Australia, and South America, this museum has successfully archived the family roots of thousands that left their native country for a better life.

If you enjoy tours and activities that revolve around historical research, BallinStadt should be added to your itinerary.

An hour outside of Hamburg is Neuengamme (www.kz-gedenkstaetteneuengamme.de), a former concentration camp during the Nazi occupation. This is the second camp I’ve visited on two different trips to Germany – Dachau, near Munich, was the first – and while it wasn’t as intense or emotional, it had the same creepy vibe. Original parking garages and other work buildings, once used by SS leaders, are now utilized to display passports, paystubs, and trial hearing documents. From the main train station in Hamburg, you will need to take the S-Bahn to the suburb of Bergedorf and either bus 227 or 327 to arrive at Neuengamme – the bus trek itself is about 35 minutes and winds its way around Bergedorf’s middle-class neighborhoods, and then finally stops at the concentration camp.

noticeable when they played “Electric Feel,” the coolest six minutes of their set that included a slightly extended ending. Nearly an hour into their performance, MGMT rolled out their biggest hit, “Time to Pretend,” and later landed on another well-known number, “Kids.” Don’t ask me how cute they looked because I wasn’t blessed with a great vantage point, but they sounded awesome from beginning to end.

Also sounding incredible was The Dead Weather, a hard rock unit featuring indie icon Jack White, who closed out the festival Sunday evening. Dare I say it was a better performance than last fall’s appearance at the Paramount Theatre? Actually, it wasn’t, because the outdoor ambiance at the Block Party swallowed the intensity and crunch of their razor-sharp songs, but I will admit that “I Cut Like a Buffalo” topped their set list.

Lead singer Alison Mosshart, who punches overtime by fronting her other music project The Kills, hooked her shuddering vocals into tracks from The Dead Weather’s debut album, Horehound, as well as the new release, Sea of Cowards.

Back-to-back performances by Hey Champ and Truckasaurus on Sunday night at Neumos brought in strong crowds, which was rather impressive because both overlapped The Dead Weather playing outside.

Chicago trio Hey Champ progressively got more interesting and danceable as the evening went on, and the kids ate it up like cotton candy at a carnival – it was sweaty, bouncy, and oodles and oodles of fun. This is a band to definitely keep an eye on. Meanwhile, Truckasaurus was a bit too trancelike for me, although the audience really got into their groovy, loungy set that included two propped, old-school projection screens that flashed images of beefy wrestlers, among other things.

The only weakness I encountered at the Capitol Hill Block Party was a final day appearance by hip-hop act Blue Scholars.

The Seattle-based crew gave a mediocre performance that blemished their hype, not to mention their prime slot on the festival’s main stage. Nothing about them was fresh – their raps, samples, and beats sounded like something yanked from a Will Smith B-sides collection. To the contrary, the ensemble of hip-hop artists under the banner “Fantastic Four” on Friday night at Neumos was amazing, primarily The Physics and J. Pinder – these guys should’ve replaced Blue Scholars on the main stage.

Overall, the Block Party was a whopping success and most of the acts matched the sizzle of the roasting temperatures. So don’t be surprised if it extends to four days next year.
