Local fans of this American Idol star marched gleefully into the The Showbox SoDo in a line that coiled around two whole blocks, including a grown woman holding a doll, another grown woman in cat makeup, and dozens of moms in borrowed teenage clothes.

I’d never seen so many fashion missteps under one roof, but it proved to be more entertaining than a forgettable opening set by fellow Idol alum Allison Iraheta – to say her cover of Pat Benatar’s “Heartbreaker” was good is being polite.

Fifteen minutes past his expected arrival, Lambert’s debut hit “For Your Entertainment” blared on the overhead speakers. This was soon followed by an entrance of the famed singer.

Legendary Lip Sync Contest celebrates first year

Bettye LaVette July 15 Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley It was a night to remember. Every seat in the house was taken – upstairs, downstairs, and the bar area at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley was packed to capacity. A line formed at the door as people hoped to squeeze in, but they were eventually turned away. The occasion was an intimate evening with Grammynominated diva Bettye LaVette, and concertgoers most definitely got their money’s worth.

The Michigan native, who will tour later this year with rock ‘n’ roll icon Robert Plant, came to Seattle for this one-night stand to perform a selection of music that stretched over a few genres – R&B, blues, jazz, and rock. LaVette’s newest work is a collection of covers from overseas artists called Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, a soulful tribute to England’s ‘60s and ‘70s marquee acts.

Like squeezing the juice out of an orange, LaVette can extract the raw emotion from any song, as she did on “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” a 1964 classic written for Nina Simone, and then on a riveting version of George Harrison’s “Isn’t It a Pity.”

“It is good to be with you again,” said LaVette, who was dressed in a slim pair of black pants and matching sleeveless top with gold stripes down the sides. “We don’t know if you like us or not, but you guys treat us so good.”

She was perfection on “A Woman Like Me,” the title track from her 2003 album, and was flawless again on “Before the Money Came (The Battle of Bettye LaVette),” from the 2006 standout The Scene of the Crime. Another number from that album made it onto the set list was the sultry ballad “They Call It Love.”

But the night’s crowning moments were pluckings from Interpretations – a passionate and showstopping rendition of the Moody Blues’ “Nights in White Satin” and a near tearful delivery of The Who’s “Love Rain O’er Me,” which she performed at the Kennedy Center Honors in front of Roger Daltry and Pete Townshend.

Two additional tracks from the album were wonderfully flavored: a gorgeous redo of The Rolling Stones’ “Salt of the Earth” and a stripped-down, R&B take on Led Zeppelin’s “All My Love.”

There were chuckles throughout the venue when LaVette admitted to being a 65-year-old black woman performing songs written by 20-year-old white guys, but no one laughed when she announced that she’s celebrating her 48th year in the business – instead, loud cheers erupted from all corners. In 2008, she participated in President Obama’s inaugural festivities at the nation’s capital alongside Jon Bon Jovi, who she referred to as a “cute little baby.”

LaVette climaxed her 90-minute appearance by belting out the title cut from 2005’s I’ve Got My Own Hell to Raise. As if she’d break down and cry at any moment, it’s her

the show – including Lily Armani, Penelope Diaz, GLAMAZONIA, Regina KingQueen, Jada Lumpia, Layla Cache Manila, and Roxy – have been exposed to the general public and have received professionally paid bookings at Neighbours and at other establishments. The most rewarding accomplishment is that the Wednesday-night show also has been able to serve as a fundraiser for nonprofit groups, including GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian, Straight, Education Network) and is also a great way to reach the community through public outreach to groups like the Imperial Sovereign Court of Seattle, Seattle Out and Proud, HIV Vaccine Trials Network, and the Seattle Gay News.

To celebrate the show’s first year back, eight fantastic contestants (six weekly winners and two wildcards) competed in front of an esteemed panel of judges including Dakita Harris from Lily Armani’s Untucked, local singer Yee-Shin Huang, news editor from the SGN Shaun Knittel, and from the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the Abbey St. Joan, Sister Stella Standing.

They offered critiques to the contestant a la American Idol. Guest spots from La Femme Magnifique, Lily Armani, and Sharon Huzbenz added to the event that about 200 people attended. At the end, the winner of the $250 cash prize was Tacoma’s Athena Kiss for her-larger-than-life performance of Rihanna.

On a personal note, I am extremely fortunate to have a stage and a home like Neighbours that allows me to work professionally in drag anywhere I am asked to, but at the same time gives me a home base for me and my events. Under the production name of Gaysha Starr Presents, I have produced three fundraisers for GLSEN’s Washington chapter (raising over $4,000), featured drag performers from all over the northwest, and in some way, I hope to continue to help make drag relevant to our community.

drag, developed my craft, and gained exposure to the public. Eventually I won several different drag titles, helped raised For the last 52 weeks, at 9 p.m. on a lot of Wednesdays, I stand in front of my bathroom mirror and get in drag. Sometimes I like what I see and how it is all coming together, and other times I have to work around “certain things” and like any artist erase and start again.

There are always my two pups, Maximus and Nina, laying on the bathroom floor and looking at me occasionally, and my iPod playing the same two songs on repeat until sometimes I don’t hear the songs anymore. In my head, I go over any material that I can use for the night: current events (thank God for Lindsay Lohan), jokes (luckily, I can play the Asian card), and one-liners (“I’m vulnerable” and “It’s for the children!”) and by 10 I have transformed myself into my drag queen persona, Gaysha Starr, ready to host the Neighbours Legendary Lip Sync Contest.

To give you some history and to explain why a weekly drag show/lip sync contest is important to our community: Back in 1993, when drag was at its height – from RuPaul: Supermodel rr of the World to Priscilla, Queen of the Gaysha Sta Desert – that was when I first started money for the “getting in face.” There were two lip sync community, wrote a weekly column for contests for drag queens to compete, perform, and to be seen at in Seattle: The Brass the Seattle Gay News under my drag name, Connection on Tuesdays with Crystal Lane started hosting shows, including the Neighand Neighbours on Wednesdays with Kahl- bours Legendary Lip Sync Contest in 2000, ua Ice. These shows were also great ways for and was able to get paid professionally to do the Imperial Sovereign Court of Seattle and drag.

Unfortunately, a downswing in Seattle’s The Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence, along with other nonprofits, to do outreach at and drag community occurred when certain bars closed and regular shows ended and for quick fundraising.

I got my start at both of those shows, and a few years it seemed as if the drag scene over a period of time I learned how to do was nonexistent. It certainly was harder to

get your start and be able to do drag, and not many businesses and people were booking drag performers. There were even a few years that drag pageants had no drag contestants, including our highest drag title in the city, The Empress, sponsored by the Imperial Sovereign Court of Seattle.

During this time I took a break and performed drag less often, and so I concentrated on my career and personal life. But every now and then I would go out just to see what was out there and to test the waters. In 2009, I wanted to come back more regularly. RuPaul’s Drag Race and documentaries like Pageant and Trantasia were being aired, and drag entertainers including Joey Arias, Lady Bunny, Hedda Lettuce, and Sherry Vine were touring nationally. Drag and Transgendered performers started to become mainstream once again.

Locally, drag shows had started to pop up at Julia’s, Rebar, and R Place and I felt that the type of “old-school drag” that I learned was still important to share both in artistry and performance, as well as in fundraising principles.

The quickest way to raise cash for charity was to get a group of talented queens with big names and advertise it well, and within a few hours $1,000 could easily be raised.

In July of last year, the man that gave me my first break and put me on his stage and developed me as one of his queens, Steve Tracy, came back to Neighbours as the general manager and made me an offer to come back and host the Wednesday Neighbours Legendary Lip Sync Contest starting in mid-July. During the show’s first year back, Neighbours, along with AJAXX 63, a local T-shirt company, has awarded over $8,000 in prize money, has had seven successful cycles, and continues to be the only stage in Seattle that is open for any drag queen, king, Transgendered, or any lip sync act to compete and perform.

unique style to sing in dramatic fashion – not for theatrics, but because she truly bleeds the insides from the often tragic stories attached to each song.

On a night like this, the only thing that could’ve made it better was LaVette announcing she’d return the following evening.

Mercy and Cuteness’s new favorite group is the Jillian Graham band. Jillian has a strong, melodious voice. The energy between her and the bass player, her husband Jim Graham, is fun to watch. Steve Torgerson played the drums well. Jillian’s tunes are delicious, and her lyrics are moving.

A week of amazing music

by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer Curtis Salgado Cuteness called Mercy’s attention to Curtis Salgado because he won the 2010 Blues Music Award for Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year. Mercy was very happy to have seen him at Jazz Alley. The members of his tight band are Josh Fulero (guitar), Tracy Arrington (bass), Russ Kleiner (drums), and Dave Fleschner (keyboards.) The group was running late because they had traveled from the blues festival in Vancouver, which was a good thing, because Mercy and Cuteness were late getting there, too.

Salgado and guitarist Alan Hagar performed some numbers while the rest of the band was getting organized. Mercy had to agree with another audience member who told Hagar he was awesome. Cuteness said some of her favorite numbers that night had been the “Depot Blues” and “Delta Blues,” some of the ones Salgado sang in his big, deep voice and with his expressive face in that impromptu concert. Mercy was happy when the full band assembled and Curtis pretended the warmup hadn’t been happening. One of the high points once the full band arrived was “Clean Getaway,” the title song from their new album, featuring Josh Fulero. Another was “I’m Too Loose,” with a keyboard solo that made Salgado say, “Cut some in my monitor, so I can enjoy it, too.”

In “I Need a Woman,” Curtis defended his PhD in harmonica. They also played an original, “Summertime Life,” which delighted Mercy. The number “20 Years of BB King” was pleasing. (“I learned more about the blues/ in two weeks with you than 20 years of B.B King.”) The band closed with down and dirty “You’ve Got to Move Away From Here.” The audience gave out moans of contentment throughout the night.

Carbon Leaf Carbon Leaf is another band Mercy is happy Cuteness turned her on to – to Mercy’s delight. The band members are Barry Privett (voice, guitar, whistle), Carter Gravatt (guitar, mandolin), Jordan Medas (bass), Terry Clark (electric and acoustic guitar, vocals), and Jason Neal (drums).

with sweet music. They opened with “Long Days.” Other favorites of Mercy’s were “Life Less Ordinary,” “Sloop John B,” and “The War Wasn’t in Color.” Cuteness liked “What Have You Learned (Now That You’ve Been Burned).” The band provided music for the Curious George movies, part one and two, which they played, joking that children’s songs only last a minute. They said the last time they played Zoo Tunes they had had to turn down the music, because the apes had been throwing logs. They closed nicely with the upbeat “Let Your Troubles Roll By.” Laughing Ladies Music Festival Mercy and Cuteness took their friend Consistency to the Laughing Lady Women’s Music Festival. Consistency says she loves curling up in one of the cozy chairs at the café and reading a book. Her favorite treat is the orange mocha. She appreciates how genuinely nice the staff is. Her service dog is always focused on owner Angela Rinaldi because Angela gives her big cookies. Cute-

Shoestring opera brings big rewards

by Brian Bailey SGN Guest Reviewer Puget Sound Opera July 16-17 Meydenbauer Theater, Bellevue Staging two operas is an ambitious undertaking, especially since this was very much a shoestring affair – in fact, the same shoestring for both operas. The same basic set served for both: a wet bar, stools, and a few tables and chairs. Bellini’s La Sonnambula was set in Lisa’s Bar and Verdi’s Luisa Miller in Miller’s Bar. Makes one wonder what other operas could be so set. Amneris’s Bar? Azucena’s Hideway? Scarpia’s Den? Other locales were suggested by a bed here, a sofa there. Contemporary street clothes were worn, saving on costumes. The chorus was small, a scant half-dozen of either sex, the men reinforced by the comprimarios, and a small orchestra, scrawny in the string department but with good wood-

winds. Precision wasn’t exactly the order of the day, and what worked well enough for Bellini’s orchestrally undemanding score worked rather less well for Verdi.

It speaks greatly for the power of opera as “drama through music” that this barebones, makeshift approach worked so well and even generated appreciable power. There were even a few happy ideas, as when Elvino at the beginning of Act 2 of Sonnambula was seen at the bar hitting the bottle pretty hard.

Elvino was sung by Robert McPherson and, if there is a story here, it is a tale of two tenors. Both were outstanding. McPherson has a high, forward placement which reminds one of Ferruccio Tagliavini. Not quite the same honeyed mezzavoce, but more integrated into the dynamic spectrum.

And in Act 1, he had a stunner of a piano high C, one well-supported with a nice mix of head and chest. He sang the part so well, I would have been happy to have encountered his Elvino on the stage of any major house.

“Out of the Blue” reminds Mercy of Cuteness and Cuteness of Mercy. (“You came out of the blue/into my heart/brought me out of the dark/saw me true/I let go of all my resistance/when I fell into you.”)

Cuteness also likes “The Moon” (“Where do dreams go, when all the world is telling you you’re crazy.”). Also fun is the breakup song “Moving On.” Consistency said, “Even though I am hard of hearing, this music comes through.”

The band – Pat Hewitt on guitar, Ben Smith on drums, and Dave Pascal on bass – rocked. The music was so loud, Mercy had trouble understanding the lyrics. At one point Cuteness moved to the porch, and was able to get the words

better. Consistency was impressed that Paula could play the keyboards standing up and sing at the same time.

Mercy’s favorites were the covers, because she knew the words: “I Never Promised You A Rose Garden,” “I Can See Clearly Now,” and “Kind and Generous,” which Maya dedicated to the café owner and organizer of the event, Angela.

Val D’Alessio Val D’Alessio, also at the Laughing Ladies Music Festival, is another one of Mercy’s favorite singer songwriters. Her voice is full and nice. The guitar is her friend. She opened with a Bonnie Raitt cover, “Papa Come Quick.” Another nice cover was “At Last My Love Has Come Along.”

Mercy liked D’Alessio’s original “Perfect Imperfection.” “Coffee stains on a clean white dress/spinach in your teeth for that first hot date/all the secrets you tried to keep/but couldn‘t wait.” Also pleasing were “Late Night Song,” “Home Highways and Bad Hair Days,” and “Self-importance Weighs a Ton.” Maria Muldaur Best known for her seductive ‘70s pop staple “Midnight at the Oasis,” Maria Muldaur has since become an acclaimed interpreter of just about every stripe of American roots music: blues, early jazz, gospel, folk, country, R&B, and so on. While these influences were certainly present on her more poporiented ‘70s recordings (as befitting her Greenwich Village folkie past), Muldaur truly came into her own as a true roots music stylist during the ‘90s, when she developed a particular fascination with the myriad sounds of Louisiana. On the string of wellreceived albums that followed, Muldaur tied her eclecticism together with the romantic sensuality that had underpinned much of her best work ever since the beginning of her career.

Her newest album, Yes We Can!, showcases the work of some of the most socially conscious songwriters of the past half-century: Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Allen Toussaint, Earl King, and Garth Brooks, to name a few. Throughout the album’s 13 tracks, a host of well-known progressive voices, collectively dubbed The Women’s Voices for Peace Choir, help Muldaur shed the light and sharpen the focus on the precarious state of the world and its future. Included on the high-profile guest list are Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, Jane Fonda, Odetta, Phoebe Snow, Holly Near, and several others. “Most of these women have boldly and tirelessly been lifting their voices for peace, non-violence and social justice their whole lives,” says Muldaur, “and their commitment to these causes has been deeply inspiring to me over the years. It is our hope that our efforts here will inspire minds and hearts and that these songs will become a soundtrack to the change we must all become a part of.”

His Amina, Jennifer Bromagen, was not quite as secure, but she had a lovely voice and good range. Her scales were smeary but roulades were well-defined without the dodge of intrusive H’s. Good trill, too.

She needs to work out some support issues, which result in some tremulousness in the lower midrange. The Rodolfo was Deac Guidi, at least adequate, but he substituted grimaces, mugging, and eye-popping for acting. In fact, none of the acting in either show was better than rudimentary. I didn’t sense a strong directorial hand at work.

In Luisa, our tenor was Gregory Carroll, who had a strong, potent voice, rock-solid and assured. He tired in Act 3, the topmost notes not coming easily. I expect this was a matter of knowing how to pace oneself.

I understand he was the Bacchus in the Seattle Opera Young Artists’ Ariadne and was successful in that ungrateful part. It wasn’t his fault that his great aria “Quando le sere” was prosaic and unimaginative. His legato was adequate but too unrelentingly loud and unvaried throughout. I say it wasn’t his fault because I have heard many tenors disappoint in this aria – from Jan Peerce with Toscanini, down to Domingo and Pavarotti – so our tenor was in good company.

Almost equally good was the Luisa of Tess Altiveros. She was diminutive but seemed to have quite a fair-sized instrument. I say “seemed” because actual vocal

size may be deceptive in such an intimate venue as Meydenbauer. She got through some very difficult music with flair, appearing uncomfortable only with the coloratura writing early on. Otherwise, I enjoyed her assured performance.

Her stage father, Miller, was David Borning. The lower part of his voice bore an astonishing resemblance to that of Leonard Warren (no less), but alas that quality dissipated as the voice ascended the scale. In the upper reaches he evinced some strain and woodenness of tone. No actor he, his arms hung limp at his sides as if they were artificial. Still, I left fascinated by at least half of what he was doing vocally and that Warren resemblance.

Neither of the basses, who sang Walter and Wurm, was impressive.

Would I go to more of PSO shows? You bet. It’s nice to hear opera in an intimate setting even if the voices were sometimes too loud for the theater, and there were some very talented singers taking part.

Inception a mad dreamscape caper

better. With Shutter Island already under his belt for 2010, Inception will shoot his already formidable market value into the stratosphere and likely ensure an Oscar nod, for one film or the other, come January.

Marion Cotillard is breathtakingly gorgeous as Mal, Cobb’s dreamy (sorry) wife.

Cotillard steals scenes at every turn, often just by turning those enormous eyes to the camera.

A cadre of young stars work the hell out of a number of juicy supporting roles. Ellen Page plays Ariadne (here she designs the labyrinth the hero must navigate) with a sure hand in a pivotal role as the only member of the team that knows all of Cobb’s secrets. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Arthur, the dour sidekick to Cobb’s impetuous hero.

Cillian Murphy plays the heir to the corporate empire and Tom Hardy (set to play the title role in the new Mad Max film coming in 2012) plays Eames, the wisecracking pretty boy who forges characters from the dreamer’s subconscious. All four are A-list stars-to-be, and all four prove why.

Also along for the ride is a bevy of awesome starpower in supporting roles.

Ken Watanabe, Tom Berenger, Pete Postlethwaite, and Michael Caine are so good at what they do that they get a little eclipsed by the action, the special effects, the tight narrative, and all the other star power. Don’t be fooled, though; they each turn in the amazing work we’ve come to expect from them.

Look, don’t get all caught up in figuring out the dreamscape on the first viewing. Sit back and enjoy the ride. Then go back to see Inception again and take notes. That way you can argue endlessly with friends about the sublime, if ambiguous, ending to this mad dreamscape caper. And if you take good notes, you’ll run a good chance of not coming off as jejune.

Inception Now Playing Inception is not a hackneyed rehash of Christopher Nolan’s 2000 surprise hit Memento, despite the irritating gesticulations and overwrought exposition of the 20-something young woman sitting behind me in the theater as the screen went black. The tirade was obviously planned long before the film started. She was trying to seem urbane. She came off as jejune.

The old saying “everyone’s a critic” has certainly taken on new meaning in the shadow of the rise of the interweb citizen journalist, and we certainly all have the right to weigh in on movies we see. However, be careful using definitive statements like the one made by the jejune young woman behind me when informally discussing movies with your friends.

You might end up sounding jejune yourself.

Inception and Memento do have some important correlations, the most important of which is the deft use of cross-cutting. But the relationship between the two films is no more closely related than, say, Hitchcock’s Marnie is related to his Vertigo. In fact, Nolan’s sophisticated use of cross-cutting is so effective one imagines Edwin S. Porter firing up a stogie and kicking the lid off his coffin in delight to know just how far his innovation has come. (I’ll bet the jejune young woman behind me doesn’t even know who Edwin S. Porter is, but she didn’t take Dr. Bruce Kawin’s film history class, either.)

And it’s the expert use of cross-cutting,

one of the oldest cinematic techniques there is, that turns the third act of Inception into one of the best 40 minutes in the history of

Planting ideas, it seems, is much more difficult than stealing them. Salt Open July 23 Phillip Noyce’s Salt is a heck of a lot of fun. The man behind Harrison Ford’s Jack Ryan adventures Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger returns to the genre after a decade of making smaller, more personal films like The Quiet American and Rabbit-Proof Fence, and does so with wickedly delightful glee, and while female Jason Bourne meets John McClane comparisons are inevitable, this is still one ticking-clock espionage thriller that definitely and defiantly stands on its own.

The first third is best. Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) is a CIA operative who is fingered by mysterious defector Orlov (Daniel Olbrychski) as a Cold War spy tasked with assassinating current Russian President Matveyev (Olek Krupa). Intent on proving her innocence, she busts out of a secure facility with her boss Ted Winter (Liev Schreiber) and high-level government agent Peabody (Chiwetel Ejiofor) hot on her tail.

This sequence of the picture absolutely nails it. The action scenes are directed with confident assurance, and Noyce makes sure viewers can follow every move no matter how fast it’s going. Even when things get silly (a series of freeway escapes is almost

Looney Tunes in its absurdity), it’s all handled with such ingenuity it stays believable almost in spite of itself. These opening moments grow increasingly tense and exciting as the danger level blossoms, each twist and turn a sensational bit of slight of hand that held me breathlessly captivated.

At the center of it all is Jolie behaving like a cross between James Bond and Ellen Ripley. Like the former, there is no jam too big for her to find a way to escape from. Like the latter, she manages to do these things without sacrificing either her femininity (I love how she removes her heels just before the chase begins) or her intelligence. This is a woman who thinks first, acts second, and lays people unconscious third, and even when she’s playing the mouse you just know the cat is still lurking quietly inside, waiting patiently to turn the tables and pounce.

So screenwriter Kurt Wimmer’s (Equilibrium, Law Abiding Citizen) plot does grow increasingly ludicrous, and at a certain point Salt becomes a bit too much of an unstoppable cyborg and too little of a super-smart secret agent using her wits and her wiles to save the day. Additionally, the true identity of the real villain isn’t difficult to decipher, and even in light of current events it’s hard to believe a Russian mole could burrow themselves as far into the government hierarchy as this one does.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Contemporary Classics and RK Productions Through August 14 Contemporary Classics and RK Productions, two companies that focus on musicals, have teamed to produce the fun semi-parody of a spelling bee, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, written and composed

by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin. Here, six tweenagers compete for top honors and you, too, could compete in the spelling bee of your dreams if you sign up to be one of four audience members asked to join in the fun.

Director Kate Jaeger does double duty as the teacher monitor of the bee and past winner, Rona Lisa Peretti. Jaeger has a lovely voice and is fun to watch as she leads the students through their paces. The energetic students are Ashley Fitzsimmons, Justin Heurtas, Kelly Mak, Sarah Petty, Robert Scherzer, and William A. Williams. Douglas Willott drolly presides as the word-giver and Brian Demar Jones plays Mitch, who has to finish working off his community service by helping with the bee.

As the students are introduced, their family situations and back-stories are highlighted. Lisping Loggaine Schwartzandgrubbenierre has the misfortune to have had her last name assembled from those of her two dads in a particularly ungainly fashion. and enter and exit through multiple areas, all the while turning into different characters in split seconds. Special kudos for the skill it takes to make it look seamless, which they do. Felker, in particular, changes looks entirely, in what looks like an impossible trick.

Bobby and Bob are not presented as a Gay couple, but their “break up” and feelings of loss are clearly meant to indicate that, even if they are not yet ready to admit it to themselves. Reaume is a scream as Bob, the underdog, who never gets to choreograph or do the really fun stuff until he breaks away from Bob. Bobby starts to disintegrate without his little partner, in a nice little twist that shows how powerful partners are often held up by quiet assistants and can’t really be effective without them.

The music for the evening, sound designed by J.D. Lloyd, is a mix of Dixie Chicks and other country music that you have to pay attention to if you want to eke out every bit of fun, since the lyrics are part of the ambiance that tells the story. Two real little ladies, Nicole Casimes or Eliana Stone, alternate coming out at the very end for a touching moment. Opening night, Stone, an adorable 4-year-old, gave the play a final moment of adorable reality.

Pageant Play Theater Schmeater Through August 14 This ain’t a version of Toddlers and Tiaras! Pageant Play, the current offering at Theater Schmeater, is a laugh-riot sendup of pageant mothers and the cadre of money-sucking musthave pageant preparers costing families thousands of dollars as they seek the next trophy for their little darlings. With a set in the shape of Texas by Steve Cooper, costumes that scream “Southern trash” by Julia Evanovich, and tight directing by Kerry Christianson, this play is one unfolding outrageous moment after another.

And don’t worry about children being harmed in this production, they are represented by – wait for it – empty party dresses!

The four hardworking, talented actors get it all right. Pinky (Amanda Lee Williams) is obsessed with having her child, Chevrolet (what a great name), win the big crown of the season, along with all the smaller crowns leading up to it. Marge (Sara Coates) enters her child, Puddle, who has no experience but starts winning everything. Pinky plots to ruin Puddle’s chances by introducing Marge to the trainers who dress Chevrolet and choreograph all her routines, but Pinky pays Bob and Bobby to sabotage Puddles’ training. Bobby (Brandon Felker of Blood Squad improv fame) and Bob (Daniel Reaume) also run seminars in what it takes to get your child started in pageantry, and of course, they are just hor-

The production focuses on the fun – and there is plenty to be had – and less on the pathos of a couple of the children whose parents are less than present, or not doing a good job of parenting. There are a lot of jokes in the script thanks to often ridiculous word definitions and the answers to “Can you use it in a sentence, please?” The children are introduced with pieces of additional biographic material that sometimes verges on the extremely inappropriate. The songs are mostly wry and reasonable for the age, including a raw and honest “My Very Unfortunate Erection,” which causes one of the kids to lose his word.

Standouts include Fitzsimmons, who has a terrific song with Jaeger and Jones; “The I Love You Song”; Jones, who has multiple small roles and a wonderful voice; Scherzer, who nails the uncomfortable, drooly William Barfee (“Bar-FAY”); and insecure but game Williams as home-schooled Leaf Coneybear, whose family derides any talents.

The music – directed by Kim Dare on the electric piano, reed player Greg Derk, and drummer Andrew Hare – is peppy and sophisticated, rather than predictable and overly cute. The Seattle Gay News interviewed Vincent Kovar, editor for the third and latest anthology to come out of Gay City.

Eric Andrews-Katz: How do you define “pulp” as a genre?

Vincent Kovar: I’ve continuously reengaged that question as I developed this anthology. The traditional “pulp” were lowbudget affairs, often in magazines, which got the name from the cheap paper they used – paper that was high in wood pulp.

I defined pulp as work that came after the [Oscar] Wilde scandal in the U.K. but before Stonewall. The true definition is something visceral; it’s a feeling evoked by work that is slightly melodramatic, a bit chewy, guilty, and delicious.

Andrews-Katz: How does pulp get represented in pictures and poetry?

Kovar: On certain levels, pulp transgresses – it enters the world of the taboo. Poetic and visual pulp has the same nature. It’s daring. It shows us something that goes against the grain in a way that simultaneously repels and entertains us. Ginsberg’s Howl is a great example. In film, I would call out John Waters as a perfect example. In photography, it’s Mapplethorpe with a bullwhip in his butt. In the poems I’ve selected not only for this issue but previous anthologies, the work is more than just a rant. The pieces draw in the reader. The photography does the same thing.

Andrews-Katz: What is the history of pulp as written fiction?

Kovar: Mainstream pulp started in the ‘20s with adventure and detective stories but also nurtured early science fiction and

literary melodramas. Gay pulps emerged a bit later – in the ‘50s – again on cheap paper.

They shadowed the sub-genre of confessionals which offered readers a “glimpse inside the world of” various groups of outsiders.

After the Kinsey Report, Gays and Lesbians were the most exciting and controversial group, but they also got bunched in with the mentally ill, drug abusers, and criminals.

Andrews-Katz: How did the first pulp books appear in the U.S.?

Kovar: The early U.S. pulps weren’t carried in bookstores. They were part of the streamlined, modern, mobile culture of the 20th century, so they were sold in drugstores, train stations, and newsstands. I suppose they could be compared to the novels you find at supermarket checkout stands today.

Andrews-Katz: Why the re-emergence of pulp as a current genre?

Kovar: In a lot of ways, pulp was the incubator of modern genre fiction. Genre fiction has a bit of a bad rap. Genre was entertaining. Literature was serious. It’s still considered second-class to “literary” fiction, but I think that there’s a real value in genre fiction, especially pulp.

Andrews-Katz: What’s the difference between pulp and “one-handed” literature?

Kovar: They are neighbors, to be sure, but I think pulp keeps its compass pointed to north of the beltline while one-handed materials beeline to the south of it. Pulp is about deeply seated human dreams: adventure, love, freedom, discovery, etc. Erotic literature has a purpose, but I don’t think the two things resonate on the same level.

Andrews-Katz: Since this is the third one, how do the themes get picked for Gay City anthologies?

Kovar: I believe that we excel as artists when we meet some sort of resistance – be it internal or external. So, I try to find themes that challenge writers to push into excel-

lence. I also try to find ones that have some sort of currency in the marketplace.

Andrews-Katz: Do you try to focus on local contributors or is that a lesser consideration?

Kovar: My main focus is on introducing new artists, especially those in King County. My overall goal is a minimum of 50% local contributors. Perhaps it is coincidental but even those contributors who live outside the area tend to have a strong Northwest connection. Often they used to live here or sometimes they end up moving here. The work, though, overrules all other considerations.

Vincent Kovar has been the editor for all three Gay City anthologies. Gay City Volume 1 focused on literature of post-AIDS awareness, while Gay City Volume 2 focused on community-themed work within that world. Gay City Vol. 3: Re-Pulped is currently available. A book launch will be held at Elliott Bay Books on Saturday, August 21 at 7 p.m., where local contributing authors will read excerpts of their work.

The event is open to the public. As well as being a published writer himself, Kovar has appeared in the Gay-themed spoof, Creatures From the Pink Lagoon.

Four young, somewhat experienced dancers glided and shimmied on either side of him, matching Lambert’s goth-meets-glam image.

“Yeah, Seattle! You wanna party?” yelled Lambert, and the crammed venue went berserk.

An odd insertion of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” came right before “Fever,” which I attribute to Lambert being overly ambitious.

But his graceful delivery of “Sleepwalker” was just the opposite, and was one of the evening’s highlights. Ditto for “Whataya Want from Me,” played acoustically with a terrific guitar intro. Another slow favorite, “Soaked,” resonated well with the audience that ranged from high schoolers to Lesbian couples to bubbly grandmothers.

“If you look inside yourself for love,” advised Lambert to the crowd, “that’s the best place to start.” And then he dove into a beautiful rendition of “Aftermath.” Wearing a black vest with a sparkly “A” on the backside, he rocked hard on “Sure Fire Winners” as he writhed with his backup dancers against a sea of sky blue laser lights. For “Strut,” Lambert’s dance crew wore glittery goalie masks, while Lambert donned a black and white leather trench coat. A juiced-up version of “Music Again” also made it onto the set list.

Lambert closed with a penetrating runthrough of “If I Had You,” easily the night’s best five minutes. A two-song encore included an acoustic rendition of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World,” an improvement on last year’s performance of this same tune at the Tacoma Dome, but a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” was poorly executed, resulting in a sad tribute of a rock classic.

You have to credit a guy like Adam Lambert – an openly Gay man who often wears more cosmetics than his female followers – for being able to connect with such a broad landscape of fans so early in his career, and while he still hasn’t found his true niche, he’s using this time to build his confidence and exposure. With better songwriting and live performances – utilizing more raw energy and less theatrics – he could go very, very far.

The show is a riot; RuPaul has opened her “school for girls” at RuPaul’s Drag U, where real women undergo extreme transformation, drag queen style! The pupils are frumpy, shy, and anything but self-confident, but they have the insight and instruction of beloved RuPaul’s Drag Race alums JuJubee, Raven, Pandora Boxx, Morgan McMichaels, Nina Flowers, Shannel, Ongina, and Tammie Brown, who teach everything they learned from Ru. One woman becomes valedictorian of her class, “draguating” with sass, self-respect, and a sense that anything is possible.

On each episode, the women are evaluated based on their “Drag Point Average” – going through a computer-enhanced “Dragulator” machine, performing a lip-sync, and being ranked on overall transformation – in order to be named best student on “Draguation Day.” RuPaul’s Drag U is camp at its finest and – next to Glee – is the Gayest thing on TV since Liberace.
