Half-Blood Prince marks the beginning of the end for Potter

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Opening July 17 It is going to be interesting to see what history has to say about the Harry Potter franchise. I say this wondering if there has ever been a series of high-priced Hollywood studio films that have been as intimately interconnected as these, managing to retain the same cast members (with one notable exception with the death of Richard Harris in 2002) start to finish for eight consecutive motion pictures.

There is the Thin Man series, but while the characters of Nick and Nora remain, the stories don’t have much to do with one another.

James Bond is more or less the same, and considering he’s had 22 official adventures, retaining the same cast would have been impossible. There was The Lord of the Rings, but those were filmed at roughly the same time and were based upon a single literary source (itself also broken up into three).

As for Star Wars or Back to the Future, well, I think the answer there pretty much speaks for itself.

by James Whitely SGN Contributing Writer “A hidden gem on Capitol Hill.” That’s the way a patron dressed in black describes Vogue Night, an ‘80s, new wave, goth, and industrial night of dance at Neighbours Underground. The party is authentic, fashionable, and very sexy.

Although listed as a 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. party, the dance floor didn’t fill up until 11 p.m., but once it did it was hard to label who was who, because this largely polyamorous crowd was full of passion for the night itself, the dance, the music, and everyone there.

It’s safe to say that no one felt out of place.

Although Vogue calls a Gay club home, it is not exclusive – everyone is welcome. According to the party’s promoters, there is a 50/50 ratio of Gay and straight clientele.

The play’s most riveting performance is by the luminous, heart-wrenching, exquisite MJ Sieber as The Elephant Man. Sieber contorts his body throughout the play, and creates sounds that all lend great credibility to his portrayal, even as he looks “normal.”

One has to wonder how he feels after holding himself that way for such a long period of time.

Director Julie Beckman brings out the best in her actors. The production moves briskly, introducing Dr. Treves, played marvelously

by David Pichette, and other characters, played in multiple roles by Rob Burgess, Marty Mukhalian, Frank Lawler and Jim Dean. Alexandra Tavares also has a couple of roles, but her star character, Mrs. Kendal, an actress who is invited to “act” like she likes Merrick, is a pitch-perfect rendition of both the actress and the friend she becomes to Merrick.

Together, Pichette, Tavares and Sieber take you into the historic culture and attitudes of 1870 England, and cause you to fall in love with them. Treves’ journey in the play displays Pomerance’s theme of looking inside, as Treves starts to realize that maybe his charity is selfish and his imposition of his rules might be no different than others, just less harsh. Pichette clearly becomes tormented by his self-analysis. Sieber displays gentle civility and thoughtfulness, and Tavares shows every emotional transition effortlessly, as she first fears Merrick and then is beguiled by his personality.

It’s not exaggerating to say that this has to be one of the best plays this year. It’s well written and definitely well acted. It has something to say to us. A perennial message we need to be shown over and over: don’t judge a book by its cover.

The Elephant Man Strawberry Theatre Workshop Through August 9 Strawshop mounts another wonderful production with The Elephant Man. Bernard Pomerance’s 1979 play tells the true story of a man, Joseph Merrick (named John in the play), who had a terrible disease linked to bone deformities, that also caused huge sponge-like skin growths and massive physical and facial distortions. Not unusually for mid-1800s England, Merrick was shunned and avoided, used as a freakshow attraction and beaten and abused. Fortunately for him, a well-respected doctor took him under his care and helped remove some of the deformities of face, so Merrick could speak understandably. Dr. Treves also made sure that Merrick had housing and was cared for until his death.

Pomerance’s play specifically calls for the actor who plays this “elephant man” to wear no disfiguring costume, so you won’t have to actually look at a horror through the whole evening. The substance of the playwright’s request was to help the audience understand that they should look inside for the character of the person. There are a few helpful slides shown that do give you the true picture of what people saw, and it’s no wonder that many once ran in terror at the idea that they could catch whatever disease Merrick had.

The production at the Erickson Theater (connected to Seattle Central Community College) is staged with a simple but elegant set by artistic director/set designer Greg Carter. Delicate lighting is added by Reed Nakayama. Interesting costumes are created

Vogue is a Seattle tradition. It quickly became evident that the people who go to Vogue at Neighbours truly wanted to be there. The truth was written on their faces; they’d been waiting all week for it.

According to Roxy Doll, the main promoter, Vogue Night is an ongoing celebration that got its start over a decade ago. Although the venue changed to Neighbours a year ago, the party remains the same.

“Since its inception, it’s still a lot of the same people coming out on the same night,” added DJ Chance.

The crowd topped 150 people with a 25- to 35-year-old demographic. Roxy says that as the weather gets warmer, the crowd will get younger and come out later. Needless to say, summer is hot at Vogue Night. Patrons frequently move back and forth between The Mercury and Cuff Complex, so you never know whom you might run into on the dance floor.

Vogue Night at Neighbours Underground is a 21-and-older party.

The drinks are modestly priced and the cover is $6. You’ll get a $1 discount if you bring a can of food, which Roxy and company donate to Lifelong AIDS Alliance. The style of dance is slow, yet sensuous, and filled with a certain fluidity in movement that was uncanny in its simplicity of style. Sitting at the bar to take in the dancing is an experience in itself. It’s clear the crowd that frequents Vogue Saturdays knows how to dance to their music. But don’t worry if you’re not familiar with the proper moves; you’ll have Vogue’s scantily clad gogo dancer Quynbi demonstrate for you.

Perched atop a dance pedestal, she moved in symmetry with the music throughout the night.

The DJs spin electronic body music, or EBM. They do it with the same level of fluidity and style as the dancers. So what’s played most often? Depeche Mode, Covenant, New Order, and Wolfsheim, accordQuynbi ing to DJ Chance, a Vogue regular who also spins artists like The Faint, Placebo, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, and Peaches. At one point, a set of Gay ‘80s dance favorites was played. The three main DJs, who’ve worked together for a number of years, effectively create a good dance party.

As for dress, black seems to be the key.

Opaque corsets, jackets, vests, boots and leather were in abundance. Black dresses were modeled by some of the ladies; even a few of men showed up in their best dark cocktail gown. One thing’s for sure: if you care to don your black pants and dance shirtless, you won’t be the only one.

Elisabeth Waterston’s Desdemona is another strength of the production. Tall, willowy, regal, Waterston brings every detail of her character to full, vibrant life. Defying her father to elope and unite in an interracial marriage, she is strong and determined. At the end of the play, hardly recognizing the wrath of her once loving husband, she goes to her marriage bed fully aware that it may be her deathbed.

Only John Campion’s Iago is a question mark in this production. Far older than the other cast members (and far older than Shakespeare suggests), Campion’s Iago creates a lot of questions with few answers. If he is, indeed, thoroughly trusted by Othello, how did the two men meet and become involved in the military structure together?

How did he spend earlier years, and in whose service? Where did his strange accent come from? While none of these questions are serious, they do throw the key relationship between Iago and Othello into question. Nevertheless, Campion creates a memorable Iago, a version that plays up the inherent comedy of some scenes and some relationships. The audience clearly loved the welcome humor, and that may be another strength of this production.

Solid support comes from the whole cast but special mention must go to three key supporting performances: Kate Forbes is wonderfully detailed as Emilia, wife to Iago and maid to Desdemona; Lucas Hall as the

vibrant Cassio; and Elizabeth Meadows Rouse as Bianca, a full-figured courtesan whose low comedy scenes registered fully with the opening night crowd.

The production was directed by Arvin Arbus, an up-and-coming director and the associate artistic director of New York’s Theatre For A New Audience, where this production originated. (Trivia detail – her mother was the famous photographer Diane Arbus.)

In a wise move in these troubled economic times, Intiman prices all adult tickets at every Tuesday production at just $25 (full rate tickets go up to $55 for key performance nights). Rush tickets, when available, are $20, and are sold 15 minutes before curtain. Audience members under 25 can attend for just $10 any night.

Group, senior and military discounts are also available – just ask. A post-performance “Conversation With Intiman Staff And Artists” is planned for July 23. The popular “‘Round Six Happy Hour,” with free drinks and nibbles at 6 p.m., is planned for Friday, July 24. The Saturday evening July 25 performance will be ASL “signed” for deaf and hard of hearing audiences.

Lots of hot summertime performances

by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer Laughing Lady Café Music Festival Mercy and her friend Jousts went to the opening performance at the inaugural Laughing Lady Music Festival. A. J. Shanti was playing guitar and singing along with keyboardist and vocalist Dora Benc, A. J. has this wonderful high hair that reminded Jousts of Elvis. Jousts also admired the way Shanti moved her hips while she played, and her beautiful butch voice. Benc’s keyboards and vocals were well-tempered.

Mercy liked A. J.’s sweet rocking song “Head and Brandy,” with the line “She fills my head with cotton candy.” And also her rabble-rousing “White Picket Fences,” with “gonna fight for my right to be free/ fight for my right to piss without anyone staring at me/ and before … gonna fight for my right to kiss/ without someone staring at me. ” Mercy and Cuteness went back to the second night of the festival. Cuteness liked how beautiful the venue was, its ambience fed by good art. Alicia Healey warmed up the evening with a rendition of her beautiful song, “You’ll Be Safe Tonight,” which Mercy and Cuteness decided to add to their commitment ceremony play list: “You’ll be safe tonight/ cause here in my arms nothing bad can harm you/ music down low, candles flame by the open window/ You’ll be safe tonight.”

Healy’s voice was rich and guitar playing right on. Her songs “Another Round” and “Fly the Moon” were also high points.

ning Seattle theater quickly snapped by the Theatre For A New Audience staging and imported the director, most of the cast and the New York production designers. It’s a win-win situation that results in one of the most powerful productions of Othello that this scribe has ever seen.

The stark set design – a large platform, a back wall with just two doors, some simple bits of furniture – forces the audience to listen to the language, which is where Shakespeare truly sets the scene. Thus the move from Venice to Cyprus is accomplished only with words – nothing on the bare stage changes. The costumes, too, remain simple.

The military uniforms are vaguely period – a period take on the typical cadet uniform (think West Point-inspired tunics with cadet

collars in a semi-metallic fabric). Desdemona wears only one dress throughout the play, until the nightgown for her deathbed scene. The changes in her character are the strength of the production, not lavish fabrics or elaborate designs for costume changes.

This stripped-down feeling is what makes the production so strong. (The Oregon Shakespeare Festival mounted an elaborate Othello last summer that successfully used detailed staging and lavish costumes, and also succeeded in making the text dominate the production.)

Sean Patrick Thomas, a veteran of the New York Shakespeare Festival, is a strong Othello. He gives the title character, the Moor of Venice, a fully developed character. His anguish at his own jealous over reactions to Iago’s treacherous comments, give him the tragic quality that Shakespeare demands. Suzanne Westenhoefer Mercy talked to Suzanne Westenhoefer about the fact that the comedian is planning to perform on the Sweet Inaugural Caribbean cruise in November. Mercy started by complimenting Westenhoefer on being a trailblazer as an out Lesbian performer in various media. Suzanne said the image of trailblazer reminded her of shoveling snow where she grew up in Pennsylvania. Mercy asked her where she lives now, and Suzanne answered LA. Mercy said, “You don’t want to be doing any literal trailblazing, where you are now.”

Mercy asked Westenhoefer how she felt about preparing to perform on the first Sweet cruise. Suzanne said she has been a supporter of the new Lesbian cruise company since before it started, because her partner is a friend of Sweet CEO Shannon Wentworth. The comic also said she is impressed with how Wentworth brings her politics to the cruises by doing carbon offsets and creating the opportunity for participants to do volunteer work along the way, so it is possible to go on a cruise without leaving a burnt place on the planet. She also likes the fact that Sweet allows people 12 months to pay, breaking the low price into smaller chunks.

Westenhoefer feels everyone on the cruise is going to be goofy with excitement about being on the first one. She says it is like having the opportunity to go back and be at the first Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival.

Gay City has set its mission to “building a healthy Gay community” and through various resources, including “Gay City University,” discussion groups in public forums and by the publishing of its own Gay City anthology and now, Gay City Volume 2, which boasts a list of contributors of local and national talents. With a book launch party at Bailey-Coy (July 23, 7 p.m.), the book’s editor, Vincent Kovar, took time to discuss the anthology and the upcoming book launch.

Eric Andrews-Katz: How did you come

to work with Seattle’s Gay City?

Vincent Kovar: Originally, I proposed doing a literary journal back in the 1990s.

I remember reading collections of Christopher Street journals and I became frustrated with the lack of availability. Four years later, I revised my proposal with a self-funded and volunteered position, and we were able to make a contribution to Gay City instead of asking money from them. That made the difference in getting the first volume published.

Andrews-Katz: Why the need for the second edition?

Kovar: While working out details on the first, I quickly discovered a journal or periodical wasn’t practical; at that time I was incapable of putting one out more than once a year. While working on the first, I swore, “Never again,” but as it finished and fell into place, I was proud of the assembly. People had favorable responses, saying it met the mission of “talking about community” and brought awareness of HIV infections without being preachy. Watching the various works come in and seeing the different visions made me excited about the project again. It was more of exploring the different themes and concepts the second time around. Also, thanks to the power of the almighty dollar, it was a lot easier getting funding for the second edition.

Andrews-Katz: Are stories of AIDS still relevant, or have people become impervious to them?

Kovar: I think that the age of “great AIDS literature” was in the mid ‘90s. Almost everything we [the Gay community] wrote and read was in that circle, and I think it is still as important. But we’ve started to look at things in a different way. It’s seen more as a disease now, not an identity. In early literature, it was still synonymous with “Gay,” and it’s not so much anymore. We started to examine different perspectives of the is-

Sun Records Revival with Vince Mira Tuesdays at 8 PM Can Can Club Each Tuesday night at Seattle’s Can Can Club, 17-year-old Vince Mira transports the audience to a different time. A time when the Memphis, Tennessee Sun Records company recorded legendary musicians, a time when Bob Dylan turned his urban poetry into music, and a time when Johnny Cash was the hottest ticket in town. Dressed in black from head to toe, he delivers a foot-tapping, guitar-strumming good time. There’s no mistake about it – the boy’s got talent.

You’ve heard about Vince already. You know, “that kid who sounds like Johnny Cash.” He began singing his songs on the street corner at the Pike Place Market when an entertainment producer discovered him in 2007. Now, thanks to media buzz and sheer talent, Vince is a household name.

His first album, Cash Cabin Sessions, was produced by Cash’s son and recorded at the Nashville, Tennessee cabin that Johnny built. He then went on to perform on Good Morning America and Ellen. Locally, he’s done shows at various festivals, Triple Door, and the Can Can, to name a few.

While it’s true he sounds exactly like Cash, Vince is an entertainer in his own right. When I saw his show July 7, by the second song it became apparent he is not an impersonator. He simply walked onto the stage, plugged his acoustic guitar in, and

began to sing “Don’t Think Twice, Its Alright.” Watching Vince is reminiscent of a young Elvis Presley, smiling shyly and softspoken. But when he sings he exudes confidence. Vince performed for roughly one hour in the intimate Can Can setting, with most of the material consisting of original songs by the young entertainer.

During the show, Vince covered a few Bob Dylan songs and a Muddy Waters tune, as well. But it was the Vince Mira originals that stood out. He delivered a solid performance, both vocally and musically, on “I Was The Train.” Another song, “Cold Hearted Woman,” was well-received by the audience. He’s also working on new material for a forthcoming album and sang “You’ve Got Me Waiting Like A Child, Like A Fool” for the first time onstage. Watching Vince perform is watching someone do what they absolutely love; he feels the music and, in a way, projects that onto the audience.

Watching Vince at the Can Can seems right. The venue lends itself to the boy’s mystique. The décor of the Pike Place Market cabaret dinner lounge and bar is authentic in its presentation. The food menu is Italian and French-influenced, and I found it to be modestly priced. My friend and I sipped white wine and sampled the cheese plate for a light snack. Although you are allowed to see the show without buying dinner, I’d recommend the show and a meal, as it’s not too often you find a place that offers both. The Can Can is a great spot to take a date or your partner.

We don’t produce as much of “our stories” anymore. Most “Gay literature” seems to be written for mainstream.

Andrews-Katz: For the two Gay City anthologies, why the different art types – poetry, short stories, drawings/photographs – versus an anthology of one type on a single subject matter?

Kovar: Originally, I was looking at just a visibility issue. I wasn’t sure I’d get enough of any one type to complete the project.

Once I decided to open and extend it to five different art types – fiction, poetry, comic art/drawn art and photography – it became easier. We wanted to get as many different voices included as we could.

Andrews-Katz: You’ve written in different genres; writing plays, short stories non-fiction and interviews. Which is your preference and why?

Kovar: Actually, I don’t believe in separating out different types of writing. The way I teach [writing classes] is that it is its own content; as long as you are writing something, it’s the same, but with different variations in form.

Andrews-Katz: When putting together an anthology such as Gay City Volume 2, do you receive your submissions from open calls, or do you solicit certain artists?

Kovar: Both. I actually have gone through other anthologies and sent out submission call invitations to every author that publishes an e-mail address in their bios.

I’ll send out submission call sheets to webpages and other postings as well. I found Tom Spanbauer by hunting him down.

Also, references from other people helps a great deal. We had over 450 submissions,

and it was difficult to write some of the rejection letters.

Andrews-Katz: How did Hugo prizewinner Ursula Le Guin or NPR commentator Marc Acito come to be a part of the anthology?

Kovar: I wrote certain authors and tried to make contact to invite them to submit their work. Many writers will publish [on their websites] rules for contacting them about their writing. After following the procedures, I was able to contact and work with Ursula Le Guin.

Andrews-Katz: Who won the “Editor Pick” awards in each available category?

Kovar: They will be announced at the publication release party on Thursday, July 23 at Bailey-Coy Books.

Andrews-Katz: What’s happening at the Book Launch Party?

Kovar: There will be a few short readings, some wine served, and discussions of the works involved. It will be the first day that the book is for sale, not from a website.

We thought that if people could meet some of the artists, then hopefully it might encourage others to produce art of their own.

Tori Amos July 10 WaMu Theater I compare the experience of seeing Tori Amos in concert to being in church; followers know her songs inside-out like the gospel of John, the set list glides in your ears as would an inspiring Sunday sermon, and at some point during the concert, whether you realize it or not, you’ve been blessed.

Amos opened her performance, and the entire “Sinful Attraction Tour,” at WaMu Theater with “Give” from her newest album, Abnormally Attracted to Sin. Dressed in a green top, which unfortunately draped over her petite frame like a loose curtain, and gold lamé stockings, she then began an onslaught of early favorites as she dipped into “Siren,” a track found on the Great Expectations film soundtrack.

“I decided to wear emerald green for the Emerald City, ” said the multiple Grammy nominee, drawing loud cheers and whistles throughout the makeshift concert venue.

She then performed a gorgeous rendition of “Welcome to England.”

To the delight of loyal fans – those who discovered the alternative rock diva in the early ‘90s – this night would feature songs from way back when, including six in a row from albums released by 1996. “Cornflake Girl” was a crowd-pleaser, as was “Crucify,” but the unexpected “Icicle” made diehard fans squirm in their seats, a delicately orchestrated number about the glory of masturbation.

The international cast is stellar. The legendary Tony Award-winner Liliane Montevecchi is spectacular in her role as the fashion forward Liliane. Frank Ferrante is the standout performer of Bottega ZinZanni. The American comedian is a master of ad-lib, delighting the audience with jokes as he picks audiences members to join him onstage, telling each one of them how gorgeous they are. Ferrante’s Caesar stole the show scene after scene. Seattle’s own Rachel DeShon is an amazing opera singer with a beautiful voice. The three French acrobats, Les Petits Freres, put a new spin on The Three Stooges with an amazing acrobatic fight, a comedy scene in which they throw each other (and a suitcase) around.

– rape, religion, sex – and usually from a woman’s downward view of the typical, insensitive male.

“Graveyard,” “Space Dog,” and the midtempo “Sugar” all made an appearance on the evening’s impressive roster.

A cover of Steve Nicks’ “Landslide” was a surprise, played immediately after Amos spoke of her brother Michael introducing her to the sounds of The Doors, Buffalo Springfield, and Buckingham-Nicks. A high note of the performance had to be when she delivered a spine-tingling version of “Bells for Her,” a lush piece and one of many entries Amos plucked from her luminous Under the Pink album. “Baker Baker” was yet another great addition to the set list from that album.

It was a simple stage set. Amos was parked at the center of the stage tapping on a mounted baby grand. Always the multitasker, she routinely whipped around to play two sets of keyboards behind her, and at times – like on the mystical “Starling” – she fiercely jammed on both, straddling a bench and either looking out to the audience with a smile or shaking her head. Amos was accompanied by a guitarist and her drummerhusband, Matt Chamberlain.

“Curtain Call,” the best track on the new CD, was marvelous; despite being trapped in an exhibition hall-style setting, is still managed to balance gentle and intense sound. Ditto for “Carbon,” the lone entry from 2002’s Scarlett’s Walk – this, of course, meant my personal request of “A Sorta Fairytale” went unmet.

A jumpy, fantastic run-through of “Precious Things” came at the end, and it displayed Amos’ unique brilliancy of combining a sweeping piano arrangement and upperforming a dance routine or a hula-hoop number, it is impossible to look away. Swiss acrobats Sam and Sandra perform a gravitydefying scene together.

The single best performance of the night, which kept the audience captivated, came when Chinese acrobats Ming and Rui became the talk of the tent, performing acrobatics suspended high above the audience.

Their aerial straps act, which they’ve performed with Cirque du Soleil, has won acrobatic gold medals. What struck me most about the performance was that it was performed by two men in place of the normal man/woman teams. These two brought a particular sex-appeal to the show that was highly homoerotic.

Chef Tom Douglas’ five-course menu did not disappoint. The appetizer of lemony thyme mascarpone on saffron toasts, festooned with Marcona almonds and slices of coppacola ham, is already placed when you are seated, followed by a perfect amount of minestrone. The avocado-themed salad is unique but very good. The main course consists of your choice of beef tenderloin, grilled halibut, or mushroom strata. I chose the beef tenderloin, which is slow-roasted to medium rare and served with sultry syrah jam, mashed potatoes, and crisp green beans. Tiramisu was for dessert.

Teatro ZinZanni is a great place to have a good meal and see a stellar and unique cast of entertainers. The dinner and show are presented in the elegant and beautiful antique Belgian spiegeltent. Nearly a third of the crowd was comprised of Gay male fans, some who enthusiastically raced to the merchandise table to buy program books and T-shirts before the start of the concert. Indeed, some of Amos’ faithful from the Gay community follow her from city to city or have attended at least one show from each of her tours.

A double encore closed out the performance, featuring “Digital Ghost,” “Big

Wheel,” and a quite lovely rendition of “Past the Mission.”

In a music scene dominated by pop stars and one-hit-wonders, Tori Amos has remained a force to be reckoned with, an artistically gifted singer-songwriter with a sense of wit and an imagination that stretches deep and wide. While her older albums overshadow the newer ones, she hasn’t lost her edge or her knack to be cleverly whimsical – she begs to be heard, even to this day.

Congratulations to Seattle’s newest pride and joy, Fleet Foxes, who scored the cover story on the August issue of Mojo magazine! The organic folk ensemble is huge in Europe and Australia right now, not to mention selling out every concert here in the US and appearing at both Lollapalooza and All Points West festivals in the coming weeks.

Fleet Foxes, the Sub Pop Records debut by this popular Seattle export, was my pick for the Best Album/CD of 2008, and I’m very glad to see their fan base expand far beyond the Puget Sound.

Grizzly Bear will likely find themselves on a shitload of critics’ year-end lists for the riveting Veckatimist, which landed on Seattle Gay News’ roster of the 10 best recordings of 2009’s mid-year mark. Gay lead singer Ed Troste and his bandmates are coming back to the Emerald City for a one-night performance at the Moore Theatre, and this baby is expected to sell out – tickets go on sale July 25 at the Paramount Theatre box office. The group’s sound is multi-layered pop, not the easiest to snap your fingers to in the car, yet mystically dreamy to listen to while you’re speed-walking around Greenlake. I recommend logging onto YouTube and ear-sampling “While You Wait for the Others” – seriously, Veckatimist is one for the time capsule.

Unlike Fleet Foxes, who’ve skyrocketed to worldwide notice, The Blakes are still awaiting their major breakthrough. The Seattle-based hard rock trio, however, is on the verge of wowness as they await the October 13 release of Souvenir, an anticipated follow-up to the band’s self-titled debut. I haven’t seen these boys since stumbling into (actually, onto) them at Bumbershoot last year, where they kindly snuck me into a VIP drinking area – they drew a large gathering at the Exhibition Hall earlier that afternoon.

Remember this name: Spencer Day. He’s jazz’s newest “it boy,” an irresistibly cute singer-songwriter already knocking on Michael Buble and Harry Connick Jr.’s doors.

He’s also my guest in The Music Lounge on July 24, a few days before he arrives at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley for a two-night appearance. Day was born in Utah, raised in rural Arizona and now lives in Los Angeles – brought up by a single mom who teaches music and sings opera. This is a kid with the talent to record albums, play intimate jazz venues, and possibly land a stage gig on Broadway in the future – he reminds me a lot of Peter Cincotti. Catch him at the Jazz Alley before he gets big, really big. But first, catch him here in The Music Lounge next week.

Where did Tori Amos stay at in Seattle?

Beats me, but I do know she dined at Purple Cafe and Wine Bar the night before kicking off her tour at WaMu Theatre. I only recommend Purple to my peeps for cocktails, as the lunch I had there two years ago sent me directly to McDonald’s shortly afterward.

A quick correction to my July 3 concert picks: the KUBE Summer Jam on July 25 takes place at White River Amphitheatre and not Benaroya Hall. An update on the rap-heavy event, sponsored by local station KUBE 93, is headed my way in the days ahead – I’ll blog anything worth blogging about, such as Asher Roth performing in the buff – one can dream, right?

Finally, for American Idol fanatics – and those who haven’t already flung rubberbands at me for the mediocre review of the mediocre Idols Live show – get ready for David Cook, last year’s winner of the hit TV reality series. The Texas-born artist slides to The Showbox SoDo on August 24 with tickets on sale now at various outlets. I haven’t decided yet if I have a crush on him (leaning on yes), but I have decided that “Light On” is a definite guilty pleasure.

Julianne Moore made out memorably with Toni Collette in The Hours while Annette Bening dallied with suburban neighbor Kristen Chenoweth in Running with Scissors, so their resumes are already sufficiently Queer to play a Lesbian couple in The Kids Are All Right, the next project from director Lisa Cholodenko (High Art, Laurel Canyon). In Kids, Moore and Bening’s children (played by Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska) set out to find their donor-dad (Mark Ruffalo). Naturally, once he enters the family’s life, havoc is wreaked. Hutcherson impressed critics with his performances in Bridge to Terabithia and Journey to the Center of the Earth, while Wasikowska nabbed the title role in Tim Burton’s muchanticipated Alice in Wonderland. Nice pedigrees all around then, and eager indie-film audiences will know if those meddling kids learned their lesson about sperm-donors when the movie opens sometime in 2010.

All the world’s T.R. Knight’s stage Gay actor T.R. Knight had a very public break with Grey’s Anatomy, the show that made him famous, but unlike other performers who have abandoned their successful and lucrative TV careers, he’s getting plenty of offers. Los Angeles theatergoers will have a chance to see Knight this fall when he plays accused murderer (and victim of anti-Semitism) Leo Frank in a stage production of Parade in September at the Mark Taper Forum. After that, it’s off to the Great White Way, where Knight will star in a revival of the farce Lend Me a Tenor, which will mark the Broadway directorial debut of actor-filmmaker Stanley Tucci. (A recent workshop reading of the play featured an all-star cast, including Knight, Tony Shalhoub, Alfred Molina and Marian Seldes.)

Suddenly, old friends start killing each other – as they so often do – and the survivors have to figure out if their buddies have just snapped or if they’ve been possessed by the evil spirit known as “The Walker.” Get ready to swoon (over Jackson) and scream when Hysteria pops up at your local multiplex, probably before the end of the year.

Shimizu and Larson try on Bob’s New Suit Arguably the most smokin’ hot butch Lesbian on the planet, supermodel-turnedactress-turned-mechanic-turned-modelingreality-show-judge-turned-actress-again (and Angelina’s ex) Jenny Shimizu returns in the new drama Bob’s New Suit. It’s about a working-class family that finds itself torn asunder with revelations of shocking secrets. Of course that’s all they’re telling us right now, so one can only imagine how the striking Shimizu fits into the plotline – but there’s always hope for Lesbian action. Always. And there are other notables in the cast: Candy Clark (American Graffiti) makes the scene, as does the legendary Jack Larson, the Gay actor perhaps most famous for playing Jimmy Olsen on TV’s The Adventures of Superman. (Now here’s a man sitting on a fascinating memoir: his postSuperman life has included everything from poetry to movie producing. He even had an affair with Montgomery Clift when they both worked on the Warner lot.) Bob’s New Suit has wrapped and should surface later this year. Hunt it down.

I bring all of this up because in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince it finally hits home that Warner Bros.’ phenomenally successful cash cow is coming to its conclusion.

The battle between the boy wizard Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his ghostly nemesis Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) nears its climax during the student’s sixth term at Hogwarts, and for all the twists, turns and surprises, the revelation that the end is nigh might just be the most startling one of all.

This comes from the point of view of someone who has not always been this series’ biggest fan. I wasn’t exactly impressed with director Chris Columbus’ first two chapters, their sluggish pace and simplistic storytelling not winning me over. More, while Alfonso Cuarón’s magnificent third entry (still the best of the bunch) blew me away, Mike Newell’s follow-up felt more like a sturdily constructed bridge between youth and the teen years than it did anything else. As for David Yates’ 2007 entry, it holds up surprisingly well, its climactic sequences as thrilling and as, dare I say it, magical as any fantasy effort this side of Peter Jackson or John Boorman.

But as this one came to its cliffhanger of a finale I suddenly realized just how astonishing these flicks have been. Like a longrunning hit television show made with nurturing care, the films have cast a hypnotic spell that has only seemed to grow. We have watched stars Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint mature from button-cute children into full-fledged actors with the ability to deftly shade their characters with subtly familiar nuances in virtual real-time. Alongside them, seasoned pros like Alan Rickman, Robbie Coltrane and Mark Williams have methodically developed their roles with precision and their ability to evolve from one to the next without deviating from the template they established back in 2001 is highly impressive.

This is important because finality is the key here. While teenage l’amour indeed blossoms, it is the sturm und drang of oblivion that drives our hero onward. Compelled more by trust than reason, Harry

Potter learns to embrace his destiny, discovering new powers and abilities thanks to a mysterious spellbook while at the same time questioning the motivations of fellow student Draco Malfoy (superbly played by Tom Felton). Returning director Yates paces things as if this were the early steps of a funeral march, and while there is humor and romance, the aching broken heart is the key which drives things forward.

While all of this is well and good and the film is arguably the most handsomely mounted and pleasingly designed of the entire bunch, it still isn’t wholly satisfying.

While it’s obvious the filmmakers intend Half-Blood Prince to be this series’ The Empire Strikes Back, setting up the climactic two-part seventh chapter (both set for release next year), the denouement is strangely unsatisfying. The final scenes feel a bit like a cheat in a “Doc Brown disappearing in the Delorean in Back to the Future, Part II” sort of way, and the collective sigh from the preview audience I saw it with wasn’t exactly positive.

And yet, despite all of that (or maybe because of it), I am intrigued to see where things go next. I want to know what will become of Harry, Hermione and Ron, want to see how they will defeat Voldemort and what the costs of doing so will entail. Most of all, almost like I felt while watching my two siblings grow from infant to adulthood (both are now in their 20s), I want to see how this series comes of age. For that reason alone, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince deserves appreciation, even with misgivings about the climax.
