by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN Contributing Writer Lisa Cholodenko burst onto the scene in 1998 with her independent hit High Art, an erotic drama about an intern at a small magazine entering into a torrid affair with a drug-addled Lesbian artist. Her 2002 follow-up, Laurel Canyon, didn’t meet with near as much success, and even with actors like Frances McDormand and Christian Bale, the film couldn’t help but feel like a step backwards.

Eight years later, Cholodenko is back, and to say The Kids Are All Right is the director’s best effort yet would be one of 2010’s most massive understatements. The story of a pair of children (Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson) who set out to discover the identity of the sperm donor (Mark Ruffalo) who allowed for their Lesbian parents’ (Julianne Moore, Annette Bening) pregnancies, this is one of the smart-

Terminally Delightful: Live in 3D! July 16 and 23 Jewel Box Theater BenDeLaCreme has been entertaining Seattle audiences for nearly 10 years. Chances are if you’ve been to a Seattle burlesque, drag, or cabaret production, you’ve seen BenDeLaCreme. In the past, the star made a name for herself as the essential guest performer. I’ve seen DeLa steal the show time and time again as hostess, singer, dancer, and comedian. Now, it is time for BenDeLaCreme’s day in the sun – beginning July 9, DeLa is starring in her very first full-length solo show, Terminally Delightful: Live in 3D! Terminally Delightful fun, offensive, and outrageous about it. I invited along local drag artist Gaysha Starr for the thrill ride. We sat in the front row ready to be wowed by everything DeLa gave us – and she delivered with perfection.

Seattle, you simply must go to this show.

Dressed in a blue sequined dress all night (she adds, or in some cases subtracts, different variations of the same costume – it’s genius!), DeLa reveals the story behind the starlet, peeling back the outer layers of makeup and artifice to reveal the makeup and artifice within. Believe me when I say this is no mere drag show. DeLa has cooked up a comedy casserole that includes a storyline told through song, video, and her own brand of physical comedy.

Rodriguez: At what point did you decide to go for it, in regards to launching a music career?

Brand: It was about three or five years ago that I decided to start my own band and just go for it and give it all I had.

Rodriguez: And how long after that did you get things rolling?

Arizona is not only a hot place to be right now, boiling with temperatures past the 100º mark, but it’s also the center of a heated political debate that seems to have divided its residents and people with roots in this Southwestern state – such as the Phoenixbased indie band Miniature Tigers, who’re on the brink of releasing a potential breakthrough album called Fortress. Lead vocalist Charlie Brand clearly stated his opinion on the matter when we spoke by phone this week, although, like fellow native Arizonians, he’s torn by this being the place he grew up and the current home of family and many friends. Fortunately, we found other topics to discuss ahead of the group’s visit to Seattle on July 21 (www.highdiveseattle. com). As his finger was about to be treated for a sudden minor injury, here’s what Charlie Brand of Miniature Tigers got off his chest when he waltzed into The Music Lounge.

Albert Rodriguez: You’re based in Arizona, and we won’t get into the details of what’s happening there, but has it been distracting to be from a state that’s a political hotbed right now?

Charlie Brand: I’ve been living in New York for the last six months. There’s definitely that presence there, but there’s a lot of people that are very against it, like myself, who feel almost disgusted and kind of ashamed to be from Phoenix, where at one point I felt pride and supported it.

Rodriguez: How open-minded is Phoenix, specifically with Gay culture or lifestyle?

Brand: I went to an arts high school and had a lot of Gay friends there, so with younger kids it’s pretty open. But there’s an area called Mesa that has a high Mormon population and they’re not that supportive of it, though I even have friends who live there and are openly Gay. Rodriguez: You don’t have to avoid cer-

tain parts of the city?

Brand: Not really. In downtown Phoenix, there are sketchy parts. But they have “First Fridays” too, where all these art galleries open up to people. I’m not totally in touch with the Gay community in Phoenix, but it doesn’t feel like it’s taboo or an underground thing.

Rodriguez: Since you had a lot of Gay friends in school, have you attended your first same-sex wedding yet?

Brand: I actually haven’t attended a single friend’s wedding. I don’t know anyone that has been married yet. But I would love to. I’m a big supporter of that, I think it’s just insane that Gay people can’t be married in certain states. I just don’t understand that at all. It just seems like, “Why not?” Sixty

started, and we were a band for about a year just playing locally. Then we got our first tour maybe a year and a half after we started. And last year, we toured for about seven months out of the whole year.

Rodriguez: How tough is that?

Brand: It’s pretty hard. I don’t feel like we’ve really broken through or that we’re some big band. When we first started touring we played some shows with two people there, and now each time we come back to a city there’s a little bit more people. It’s like a slow, steady build.

Rodriguez: Do you have a favorite alltime diva, living or non-living?

Brand: I like Whitney Houston, she’s pretty wild and kind of kooky. I like Madonna, a lot of stuff she’s done I’ve been inspired by – I liked her a lot growing up.

bers (all played by DeLa) who are laughout-loud funny, rude, and recognizable.

The family members do their best to embarrass DeLa and unravel the performer she’s trying to be. I don’t dare tell you any other juicy details for fear of letting the cat out of the bag – suffice to say that this all plays out in a way that only DeLa can deliver; it’s fun, offensive, and outrageous.

BenDeLaCreme is stunning in her makeup and costumes, but what took my breath away (literally; I couldn’t stop laughing) was her timing. A majority of the show is made up of prerecorded video and audio tracks which she has to respond to with perfect symmetry in order for it to work. DeLa is a comedian of the highest caliber, that much is certain – she meets every cue, nuance, and punch line with perfection.

For Gaysha Starr and me, the highlight of the show was an Eminem parody in which BenDeLaCreme becomes Cremenem (complete with airbrushed and glitter-dazzled gangsta hoody) to rap about makeup and becoming a star. Now, I’ve seen DeLa dance, I’ve heard DeLa sing – hell, we’ve all seen DeLa strip – but who knew she could rap?

BenDeLaCreme’s Terminally Delightful: Live in 3D! is scheduled for July 16 at 8 p.m. and July 23 at 11 p.m. in the Jewel Box Theater. This is a 21 and older event and table service is available inside the theater.

Rodriguez: Are there any shows your friends would be surprised to know you went to?

Brand: My mom bought me and my brothers tickets to go to N’Sync back in the day. I didn’t want to go, I was like, “Aww, they suck!” But all these years later, I love Justin Timberlake. I had his last album on heavy rotation.

Rodriguez: So what bands or artists do you follow hardcore?

Brand: I follow older bands that aren’t even around anymore, like The Beatles and The Beach Boys. I love Animal Collective, Panda Bear, Grizzly Bear and Of Montreal – any time these bands put something out, I’ll check it out as soon as I can.

Rodriguez: What would be your dream opening gig?

Brand: Grizzly Bear would be a huge one, and maybe Animal Collective. That’d be a dream come true, for sure.

Rodriguez: What’s the first concert you ever went to?

Brand: The first concert I ever went to was Aerosmith with my dad. I was like 10 or something.

Rodriguez: Do you have any guilty pleasures, anything borderline embarrassing you listen to?

Brand: Sometimes when I’m driving around I’ll listen to commercial radio. I like that Katy Perry song, “California Gurls,” with Snoop Dog rapping on it. That seems like a pretty embarrassing song to like, but every time it comes on the radio I kind of dig it.

Rodriguez: After this tour, what are the plans for the remainder of 2010?

Brand: We’re figuring that out right now, but probably more touring. We’re doing our first headlining tour now and we want to do some support shows after this. I guess we’re going to see how the album picks up and go from there.

Rodriguez: Will you guys be playing most, if not all, the songs from the new album?

Brand: I’m pretty sure, yeah. Even before we put out the record we’d been playing these songs live and learned how to play them as a band, so we’ll be playing pretty much everything plus a few older songs mixed in.

Rodriguez: Do you remember anything about Seattle from your previous visits?

Brand: My aunt has a house on Mercer Island. I just love it up there. I love Frasier, so there’s something about Seattle I’ve always just loved, and going there as a kid. It’s very relaxed and has a nature vibe – it’s very calm and peaceful, but it seems like there’s a lot of culture going on at the same time. It’s definitely a city I’d like to spend more time in, that’s for sure.

Chamber Music Festival, Ottmar Liebert, and Poncho Sanchez

Mercy thought the setting was much more comfortable than the Garden of Remembrance behind Benaroya Hall. About 80 people rotated through the tables and chairs that had been arranged in a circle. Mercy liked the fact that she could see the faces of the other people watching. The amount of traffic noise was about the same as at Benaroya. Reality grinned at the way a bus horn worked its way into the music. He feels chamber music has pastoral associations and is much better suited to the green around Lakeside School.

Seattle University or Discovery Park might be equally apt. He pointed out the pretty plane trees overhead, but otherwise the setting was quite urban.

There were also some attractions, such as watching people play the large chess set, or a sidewalk artist who Reality said was getting her yoga in. It was an easy place for the few children present to have other things to pay attention to if they got bored with the music. One woman bicycled through the listeners.

The crowd was much more diverse than the one on the Lakeside lawn. Mercy liked that. She was disappointed that the broadcast didn’t include the recital, which is the best part.

Craig Shephard substituted for Andrew Armstrong, who was out sick, on the first piece, Poulenc’s “Trio for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano.” He made a pleasing combination with Ben Hausman on oboe and Paul Rafanelli on bassoon.

Bion Tsang played cello and Adam Neiman piano on Grieg’s “Sonata for Cello and Piano in A Minor, Op. 36.” Mercy found it transporting.

Panevino offers a taste of Italy on Broadway

Directly across from the Broadway Market’s QFC, the location of this new gastronomic delight couldn’t be better.

The menu boasts a wide variety of Italian dishes ranging from the traditional “Insalata alla Cesare” to the house specialty of “Spaghetti Tarantina” – pasta with mussels, calamari, and garlic served in a spicy tomato sauce. “The food is [influenced] from Tuscany all the way to Southern Italy,” Angiuli proudly says. “There’s a lot of seafood from the southern parts. We also have meats, vegetarian meals and vegan dishes.” There is

even the choice of organic wheat penne or spaghetti – by request.

The menu contains an assortment of foods all for reasonable prices. While some of the foods are imported from Italy, using as much local produce as possible is important to the owners. Choices of insalate, antipasti, main courses, and desserts all wait to be explored.

Lunch for two averages about $10-$15 per person, while dinner can be a little more expensive, depending on drinks. Panini are also available from 11-4 p.m. daily. Panevino hosts a well-stocked wine cellar with over 60 different brands of wine. Both white and red are represented, with Washington’s own labels mingled alongside imported Italian varieties. For those wishing something a bit stronger, there is a full bar including Prosecco or Ferrari brut by the glass – something not common in Seattle.

Happy hour presents a smaller menu with many tempting offers. “It’s one of the great deals in town,” confides Angiuli, “with a wide variety.” Served at the bar only, happy

hour begins daily at 3 p.m. and lasts until 6 p.m. and then returns from 9 p.m. until closing (Sunday-Thursday closing is midnight, 2 a.m. on Friday/Saturday). Food items include cioppino (mussels and clams in a spicy sauce), scampi penne, and piatto di salami to name a few of the platters offered. Aside from either house red or white glasses of wine beginning at $3.50, patrons can choose one of three draft beers for $3, well drinks for $4 or martinis beginning at $5; a martini list is currently being created specifically for Panevino. Angiuli proudly adds, “We’re going to be offering wine tastings soon.”

Desserts can be the perfect way to end a wonderful meal, and Panevino offers several. The tiramisu is touted as the best, with the panna cotta (homemade vanilla custard cake w/strawberry sauce) coming in a close second. The cannoli is traditional Sicilian filled with ricotta cheese opposed to whipped cream that is found in American cannoli. Tartufo al cioccolato (chocolate truffles) or sorbet/gelato are also offered. All desserts are made in-house except the gelato, which comes from Ballard’s D’ambrosio Gelateria.

Offering al fresco dining (weather permitting) or indoor seating, Panevino opened on June 26 at the Capitol Hill Street Festival to show their support of the local community.

Decorated with a personal touch, pictures of Francesco’s hometown, family, and friends have made it up on the wall. “I feel proud and happy to be open on Broadway,” says Angiuli. “The people seem happy with the food and service and that’s what makes me happy. It’s one of the most important things of what we’re trying to do. People taste the difference when things are homemade and when people put their heart into something they do. We put 100% of what we have into making the night enjoyable for everyone.

The word ‘no’ doesn’t exist in this restaurant.”

Francesco Angiuli originates from the southeastern city of Bari, located on the ‘boot heel’ of Italy’s Adriatic coast. He has been in the restaurant business for over 22 years having been the operations manager for several places in California. Moving to Seattle with his wife, Natalie, Angiuli discussed the idea of opening their own place with longtime friends Johnny Chiloiro. The two men opened Panevino with Chiloiro as co-owner and executive chef. “We liked the atmosphere of Capitol Hill,” Angiuli says, “and wanted to open a place on Broadway.

Nothing too fancy, but someplace with affordable prices and enjoyable food.”

where it started; it started someplace personal and then went into complete fiction.

Fetters: With that in mind, how do you do the research for the “what-if” portion of this scenario? What was it like trying to look those 18 years into the future?

Cholodenko: When we decided to go with an anonymous donor, I asked a lot of questions. I was naturally interested in what the future would be for my kid, so I went to the people at the cryobank that we used and asked what would it mean for him when he turned 18. I wanted to know how he would go about making contact with this person if he wants to.

So, around the time when my co-writer [Stuart Blumberg] and I were writing the script, I’d discovered I’d already done a lot of the research. Additionally, it seemed like there were lots of articles and news programs, a few things in the New York Times, about donor kids coming of age and seeking out their sperm donor fathers or seeking out their half-siblings. I just became a kind of fiend for information.

Fetters: A fellow critic here in Seattle had the oddest reaction to the film, stating that he didn’t understand why the Lesbian family wasn’t all that different from a straight family other than there were two moms. I almost couldn’t believe his reaction. Have you heard that before? How important was it for you to show that this family was just as loving, nurturing and, yes, quote-unquote “normal” as any so-called straight family would be?

Cholodenko: Yeah, I’ve definitely heard it a lot. In terms of the understated presenta-

tion of the family, and the fact it is a Gay family, I think that some people go in with these odd preconceptions as to what that presentation is supposed to be.

Our intention was to keep things rather simple, to keep things understated and typical, which in our minds was a stronger sort of political position, that it was kind of subversive in a way because it is so normalized. You’re not consumed with the Gay themes or the issues of a Gay person, but more allowed to become consumed inside this world of humans, of parents trying to keep their family together while dealing with mid-life marriage, and of kids trying to make their way in the world as adults – there was power in keeping that [part] of the film as restrained as we could.

Fetters: Now that the picture is leaving the festival circuit and making its way into general release, what do you hope people are talking about when they leave the theater? What do you hope is on their mind?

Cholodenko: I want them talking about how much they identify with what the family has gone through, that they found some sort of confidence or buffer in looking at a marriage 20 years into its life. I want them to have an idea or be reminded about what it is like to say goodbye to your kids. I really do think in a way this [film] is a very traditional, all-American style of experience, that the variances that this family goes through and the things that threaten their unity are really common, the sperm donor stuff aside, and I hope people can find comfort, humor, and drama in that. I hope that the movie is a great ride for them.

What might be most interesting here is how the filmmakers treat the family dynamic at the film’s core. Cholodenko and Blumberg don’t make a big deal about the fact Joni and Laser’s parents are Lesbians;

est, funniest, most emotional and gloriously entertaining motion pictures of the year.

A hit at this past January’s Sundance Film Festival and now screening around the country to rave reviews, I had a chance to speak with Cholodenko about her very personal motion picture and what it means to her that it is being embraced with such open arms.

Sara Michelle Fetters: I’d heard that The Kids Are All Right is your most personal effort yet. Why is that? Where did the idea for the film come from?

Lisa Cholodenko: It’s one of those things where I was really immersed in my own family situation. My girlfriend and I wanted to have a kid [and] we were spending a lot of time talking about the pros and cons of anonymous donor versus obtaining sperm from somebody we knew. We decided to go with an anonymous donor, and then after that step there was the step of finding the person that was going to be the father of our child – we have a four-year-old now – and I was just totally consumed in that world.

When I sat down to write a script, at first blush, it just made sense. I’d been sitting here going through all of this and I thought, 18 years from now, what are things going to look like? What will they want to know?

From that point, things just splintered off from my own experiences and I just hooked into that idea and went from there. So that’s

things on my own? Did we raise our children right? Are we good parents? Those are things facing Jules and Nic, and if parents of all stripes can’t relate at least in some way, then they’ve got far bigger issues facing them than anything to be found here.

Some will undoubtedly take issue with a second-act twist involving Jules and Paul, while a case can certainly be made that Nic isn’t entirely likeable and can come across as rude and disingenuous. Others will argue that the film asks a ton of questions and

The Kids Are All Right Opening July 16 It’s Joni’s (Mia Wasikowska) 18th birthday, and her parents Jules (Julianne Moore) and Nic (Annette Bening) are more than a little melancholy as the realization that their little girl is only a couple of months away from leaving them for college finally hits home. Little brother Laser (Josh Hutcherson) has something completely different on his mind, however, and when the first quiet moment strikes, he’s quick to remind his sister about his intimate request to her now that she’s of emancipated age.

What is it that he wants?

Laser wants to know who the sperm donor was who made their birth possible, and now that Joni is old enough to legally find out, he’s eager for her to do just that. But big sis isn’t so sure this is a good idea, and is worried what their moms will think if they were to discover exactly what it was their two children were secretly up to. Still, Laser is persistent, and Joni would be lying if she didn’t admit to her own curiosity, so she takes the bull by the horns and contacts the clinic to set the gears in motion.

Enter restaurateur Paul (Mark Ruffalo), a scruffy former slacker nearing 40 who has yet to plant some roots of his own. To his surprise, he finds himself drawn to the kids, enjoying the blossoming relationship he’s starting to have with them even though none of them are entirely sure where it will ultimately lead. That uncertainty grows exponentially when Jules and Nic enter the picture, and all five enter potentially chaotic waters for which the guidebooks still haven’t been written.

doesn’t go out of its way to answer the majority of them, leaving a ton of threads dangling by the time all is finally finished.

I cannot help but disagree with pretty much all of those complaints, and if the film were directed by a Woody Allen or a Robert Altman and involved a straight couple dealing with many of the same issues, I doubt this argument would even be taking place.

For my money, Cholodenko and Blumberg get far more spot-on than they ever do off, hitting the mark repeatedly with every naturalistic twist and turn their story takes. I believed in these people, had no trouble putting my feet in their shoes, and while I didn’t always agree with their choices, that didn’t mean I still didn’t understand why it was they were making them.

This is, without a doubt, Cholodenko’s best effort yet. There is a confident self-assurance at play here that just oozes right off the screen, and the director’s handling of her actors and pacing of the narrative is just about perfect. Everything ultimately feels totally authentic, and while I do admit to being a tiny bit annoyed about how one major character makes their third-act exit, as problems go, that one is pretty darn minor. This film hits so many right notes I hardly even noticed when it made a sour one, and Cholodenko is blossoming into a major talent worthy of keeping an eye on.

In a perfect world, we’d be talking Oscar nods for the script, Moore, and especially Bening. Heck, we might even be pondering one for the actual film itself (and maybe even for Wasikowska and Ruffalo, as well).

The Kids Are All Right held me intoxicated right from the very start, and as I walked home after I couldn’t stop the beautifully deserved tears from flowing no matter how hard I tried. In this case, the kids just aren’t all right; they’re freaking fantastic.

they don’t treat it as an issue needing to be discussed and debated. Jules and Nic are instead just good, solid, everyday folks, arguing over the same timeless issues revolving around raising children that parents the world over have faced for eons.

Once you get past the central sperm donor hook, the big things facing the two women are as rudimentary as you can possibly get.

in a London boarding house. Each works a 12-hour day and the unscrupulous landlord collects double the regular rent. This works for months until both men end up at home on the same day. Scott Bessho and Richard Hodsdon are terrific in the title roles, and Craig Cantley is solid as the landlord. An elaborate, detailed set adds to the fun in this spirited staging. It’s first-class in every way – a terrific achievement for the Society.

HMS Pinafore is one of the world’s most famous operettas, and one of the few that works as a contemporary fable. The famous satirical irony of some of the show’s musical numbers is as topical today as it was in Victorian England. In the show’s most famous lyric, the first lord of the admiralty pointedly sings of his questionable rise to military fame: “Stick close to your desk/and never go to sea/and you may be the ruler/of the Queen’s navy.”

The usual contrivances of Victorian melodrama propel the plot. The show opens with “We Sail The Ocean Blue,” one of the most popular of G&S chorus numbers.

Minutes later, Little Buttercup, one of the most charming characters in all of G&S works, boards the Pinafore. A “Portsmouth bumboat woman,” the rotund Mrs. Cripps, always called Little Buttercup, offers an assortment of scissors and such. Captain Corcoran, the ship’s commander, notes that she is a “plump and pleasing person” and the audience immediately knows how that part of the story will end. Her opening aria, “I’m Called Little Buttercup,” is another “hit” from the show – a charming waltz with a melody that is immediately recognized.

The Captain’s lovely daughter, Josephine, appears, as does our handsome hero, Ralph (pronounced “Rafe” in the British manner) Rackstraw. On seeing Rackstraw, Buttercup has a terrifying musical moment and cries out, “Remorse, remorse.” Victorian melodrama is set up for a “surprise” ending – a staple of theater at the time.

As the story progresses (and don’t forget the Society’s notice to audience members to avoid any literal analysis of the plot), the question of the British class system is widely discussed. Could a captain’s daughter ever stoop below her station and love a mere “able seaman,” like Ralph Rackstraw? Could the first lord of the admiralty – a stuffed prig, to be sure, but a “real catch” – lower his class standards and marry a captain’s daughter?

By the time – about two hours later – the audience understands Buttercup’s cries of “remorse,” all is straightened out and cupid has paired three delighted couples. All end happily in Gilbert & Sullivan land – one reason the pair’s major works have survived for

Celebrate summer with excellent Man of La Mancha

HMS Pinafore and Cox & Box Bagley Wright Theatre Through July 24 The Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society has a likeable plan to make entertainment money go further this summer: a double bill of a Gilbert & Sullivan (G&S) favorite and a rare Sullivan composed one-act as a curtain raiser. And the two shows in one evening are sold at the same price as one regular summer outing. Such a deal....

HMS Pinafore is the audience draw for the three-week summer run, which continues through July 24 with evening and matinee performances all Saturdays and this coming Sunday. To make summer money go even further, the G&S Society earmarks certain performances as “family nights” with a flat rate for the whole family.

Last Friday’s opening performances of both Cox & Box and HMS Pinafore found that all’s well in Seattle’s Gilbert & Sullivan land. Both shows are performed with a lot of zest and spirited, silly fun. As usual, the Society pointedly includes a disclaimer in the production program: “Attempts at a detailed literal analysis of any Gilbert & Sullivan plot will only upset you and annoy your friends and others seated near you.” In other words, relax, have a good time, and let the silly zaniness of yesteryear wash over you.

The Seattle Society, like many other G&S groups, is committed to producing all of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas in a workable rotation. The Seattle Society wisely stages several of the best known titles in close proximity to each other and intersperses the rarer works – which tend to draw fewer crowds – when the economy is strong and the bank balance stable. Pinafore was last seen in 2004, staged to celebrate the Society’s 50th anniversary. Cox & Box – the true rarity of the summer – was staged only twice before, in 1968 and 1985. It’s not quite correct to term the production a “once in a lifetime” opportunity, but that is almost the case.

Cox & Box was composer Arthur Sullivan’s first chance to write for the British musical stage. Adapted from a short one-act play, interestingly titled Box & Cox, the musical libretto was written by a now forgotten F. C. Burnand. It originally ran close to 55 minutes. It was later shortened by the famous Gilbert & Sullivan producer D’Oyly Carte to about 35 minutes. No important music was cut in the newer “Savoy Version,” just extended dialog and some musical verses.

Cox & Box is a trifle, but a pleasant one.

credible work of Dave Ross in the supporting role of Dick Deadeye. Long the star of each year’s show – he has played the patter king in the whole G&S cycle at least twice – he is now “on a quest to play as many unreconstructed villains as possible” in his next 25 years with the Society. He makes Dick Deadeye truly memorable but carefully never steals a scene he is not supposed to steal – a tricky task in Gilbert & Sullivan land.

For the record: Christine Goff did fine work as the stage director. Bernard Kwiram did likewise as the music director (and his fine orchestra also deserves special mention). Nathan Rodda’s detailed scenic designs and Chelsea Blum’s on-target costumes added visually to the show’s success.

(One quibble: Victorian women rarely appeared in public without hats and gloves, and Blum rarely uses either on the women’s chorus.) Daniel Wilkins choreography added a valued measure of spirited dancing – including a strong shot of testosterone in a quartet of muscled men in tight athletic shirts.

All in all, the double bill is a musical highlight of the summer. Highest recommendation. Check it out.

The 2010 edition of Pinafore is terrific in every department. Jenny Shotwell is a delight as the sparkling Josephine. She is charming in every scene, but is a splendid comedienne in the Act Two highlight, “Never Mind The Why And Wherefore” trio. Oliver Donaldson is properly solid and handsome – and in terrific voice – as Ralph Rackstraw. Erin Wise is a total charmer as Buttercup, and William J. Darkow is properly gruff as the Pinafore’s captain. Darkow is at his best in shared numbers, but bravely handles his Act Two opening solo ballad with acceptable skill.

John Brookes, properly prissy as the Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Potter, the first lord of the admiralty, is an audience-pleaser. In the traditional role of the patter king – a G&S staple – Brookes gets the show’s best number, “When I Was A Lad,” with its “never go to sea” advice. His “sisters and his cousins and his aunts” provide the women’s chorus for the show. As usual for the Society, the men and women’s choruses are major musical strengths (although a bit of overacting emerges from both groups).

else to go along with the crazy man and humor him. But his family is determined to make him find his sanity again.

The moral is basically that it’s better to believe in and strive for soul-satisfying glories, even if they’re impossible, than to accept and resign oneself to unimaginative, boring, and spirit-killing realities. While you can debate that, the musical is certainly uplifting and empowering, encouraging one to think about going crazy just because it’s so much more attractive.

Berryman has a solid grasp of Cervantes and Quixote, and Rivera is perfection as Sancho, getting to sing about why he follows this crazy man around because “I Really Like Him.” Candace Vance makes a beautiful Aldonza, even with a little dirt on her face and messy hair. She has a lovely voice, but seems to be pushing her voice a little too hard in the upper ranges in order to be heard. With a strong assist from Stephen Grenley, Pam Nolte, Mike Oliver, Ryan Childers, Faith Russell, and April Wolfe, the script comes to life.

The three musicians – Jared Borkowski on guitar, Gordon Tibbits on guitar, bass, and others, and Ivan Arteaga on percussion and wind – combine to sound like many more.

Simple musical accompaniment to scene changes and mood changes create aural enjoyment.

A creative basement dungeon was designed by Mark Lund and looks imposing and ominous. Into this dungeon, the writer Cervantes and his servant are tossed to await questioning by the Inquisition. The murderers, cutpurses, and other down-and-out inhabitants are eager to disperse Cervantes’ belongings among themselves, until he convinces them that he should have a trial and if he wins he gets to keep his belongings. Cervantes’ defense is to tell an elaborate story and involve the cellmates in contributing to the tale.

On July 8, Qulture Qreative, Fringe Presents, and Angry Boy Productions held Rumpshaker at Chop Suey (1325 E. Madison) in Seattle’s Capitol Hill Neighborhood. Local LGBT entertainers Queerbait!, Luxury A.K., Sh*t Damn Hella, Huggy B, and Amoania & The Shitbags performed live while DJ Nark spun tunes for a dance party.

Although Rumpshaker is relatively new, the party’s promoters say that events like this are important because they are a “conglomeration of all-over-the-map non-discriminate Queer culture, electro hip hop funk jam, with a dash of seedy nightclub glam, boiled and poured down a funnel of fun.”

Local promoter (Qulture Qreative/Hard Times) LA Kendall and her business partner, David Richey, were among the first to start including LGBT musicians in their dance nights over a decade ago. “Recently, with all the great Queer music options to choose from, Kendall and Richey began talking about changing the formula and having the bands be the focus and the DJ be the support,” organizers told SGN, “like a Queer concert.”

Kendall approached Kevin (Nark magazine/Fringe) and Shannon (Angry Boy Productions/Sh*t Damn Hella) about producing and promoting Rumpshaker – a night dedicated to supporting and exposing all types of LGBT musicians.

There is a diverse cross-section of Queer bands and performers, and there’s a market for these types of shows.

Rumpshaker promoters told SGN that there is a diverse cross-section of Queer bands and performers, and there’s a market for these types of shows “that is fairly untapped in this manner of presentation.”

The group got together and decided to have the shows produced at Chop Suey.

“Chop’s a great place and they have a great staff, sound system, and the added bonus of being right on the walking tour of lovely Capitol Hill proper,” they told SGN. “Most importantly, they support what we do.”

Still, Rumpshaker officials say that the show will never be a typical, predictable event that will stick to one day, venue, or path. “Expect to see the unexpected,” they said. “Keep an eye out, though, we do expect to do more shows at Chop Suey.”

The group says they plan on tapping into other promoters, agents, and performers that are bent toward the Queer community and also tapping into touring acts so “we can be exposing local as well as touring acts to the Queer community in this forum.” Their hope is that Rumpshaker will be a “place where non-competitive creative energy is expressed.”

Currently, the promoters are looking for Queer performers – of any kind – for bookings. And yet, here Jolie is, speaking about women in action films, tips her drag-doing Salt co-stars gave her on being a genderbending badass, and Brad Pitt’s reaction to her doing dude.

Chris Azzopardi: Salt is based in reality, but there are all these crazy action scenes.

Where’s the limit in those scenes so people still believe the story?

Angelina Jolie: Everything had to be somehow possible, even if it was stretched, even if the trucks on the freeway were wild, it’s still not impossible. Crazy – but not impossible. [Laughs.] It’s the opposite of actually every action movie I’ve ever done because there’s never really been a female action movie based in reality. They’re always fantasy. I’ve done most of ’em. [Laughs.]

Azzopardi: The character was originally written for a man, so what else changed about this character?

Jolie: Well, I’m not Edwin. [Laughs.] We said, “We can’t start to turn this into a girl movie because that’s where people have failed in the past.” When they write something on purpose for a woman, it’s always about being a woman. So, we said, “We have to make her darker, and we have to make her meaner than the boys.”

Azzopardi: So you’re not Edwin, but for a few minutes, you are a man.

Jolie: I am! I couldn’t help myself!

Azzopardi: What was it like to crossdress?

Jolie: Oh, it was great! You realize every lead in this movie [including Liev Schreiber in Taking Woodstock and Chiwetel Ejiofor in Kinky Boots] has cross-dressed? It’s just the greatest thing. I’m surprised that picture hasn’t got out: the three of us next to each

other, in our matching drag photos. They were very supportive. [Laughs.]

Azzopardi: Did Liev or Chiwetel give you tips?

Jolie: They gave me tips, yeah. They just basically said, “Go fully into it and enjoy it.”

That’s what they did. I loved it. We called him Johnny for some reason. It was really weird.

Phillip [Noyce, the director] could hardly talk to me. Nobody could talk to me. It wasn’t as much what he looked like; it was when I spoke, when it was my voice coming out of him.

Brad came to visit me once and I said, “You don’t want to come; I’m going to be the man.” And he said, “It won’t bother me. It’s you. Whatever.” Then he came, and I was changing, so I was half-woman, half-man. [He was] so creeped out by that!

[Laughs.]

Azzopardi: Did you have an influence on desexualizing Salt?

Jolie: It was extremely important to me [to desexualize her], because I just felt that she was better than that. Not that it wouldn’t have been fun to do if it was appropriate in a scene, but it just felt like if we can find a way to not need that, let’s not.

Azzopardi: Your character builds bombs and rewires systems – Jolie: My MacGyver scene!

Azzopardi: Did you pick up any skills while you were doing this movie?

Jolie: We actually took one or two elements out of the bomb-building [scene] so it couldn’t be re-created, but yeah, with a few extra elements, that’s one. [Laughs.]

You learn the oddest things when you’re an actor. You come home and your kids say, “What did you do?” “I built a bomb.”

Azzopardi: You’re rather fearless, but did anything about doing your own stunts scare you?

Jolie: Only the last kill. I was worried I was going to snap my arm. All the people playing the extras in the entire room didn’t know what was going to happen because

they [the crew] said to me, “You can’t rehearse it, really. You just gotta go.” So – we just did it. They [extras] were so shocked that they really reacted, and then everybody started applauding. [Laughs.] It was like doing a stage play.

Azzopardi: Because Salt is so strong and smart and badass, what do you think the role says about women?

Jolie: I’ve never underestimated women, so I’m not surprised to start seeing women do these things. That’s why we didn’t actually approach it as “Salt’s a woman”; we just approached it as “Salt’s a badass and happens to be a woman, and this should be no real huge surprise for anybody.”

Azzopardi: Shooting in New York or Washington, D.C., are there smells or views that help you create the character?

Jolie: Yeah, absolutely. These places are so specific, and Washington is a place where you can feel the power of things that get done – or the frustration of things that don’t get done. [Laughs.] But when you’re running through the park and you have all the monuments around you, it’s impossible not to feel what that means to a movie, especially if the movie is about the CIA. Azzopardi: From a character perspective, where would you like to see Salt go next if there is a sequel?

Jolie: It depends how [this one] goes. If it does [well], then we’re all going to jump in and try to figure that out. We’ve been joking: “Could there be a disaster in every resort across the Americas, across Europe, and the world? You know, can we go to Fiji for no reason?”

continued from cover missioned for Goodman Theatre in Chicago and then produced at the Manhattan Theatre Club. It was not only a critical success, but a call to action for many. In a city with as much connection to “causes” and political involvement as Seattle, it is proving to be an easy sell – even preview performances, not known for selling out, are selling out.

Part of this may be that a huge percentage of the cast has been performing this script for some time, either in one or both of the originating productions. So, a preview performance is likely to be almost as polished as any of the rest of the run – and a highgloss polish it is!

The cast of actors is uniformly excellent.

Clocking in at what would normally be a “longish” two hours and 45 minutes, the event rushes by as scene after quick scene introduces you to Mama Nadi’s house of comfort in the middle of the chaos of Congo politics. Mama Nadi, played by steely Portia (known only by her first name), who vigorously defends her heart from involvement in order to keep her business afloat, takes in young women discarded by their families after being raped and brutalized by soldiers and rebels alike. Of course, these same brutalized women have to pleasure the men who come there to pay for drink and a “good time” but the structure allows them a modicum of dignity and value.

Russell G. Jones portrays Christian, essentially a traveling salesman, who convinces Mama to take in two more women, one of whom is his niece Sophie, a beautiful young woman who was college-bound until she was brutalized so badly that she is now considered “ruined.” Mama Nadi doesn’t want to take Sophie in, because unlike the other women “just” raped, a woman (or even girl) who has been ruined has had so many awful tortures to her insides that she is incapable of proper digestion, proper elimination, and likely unable to procreate. Her value as a prostitute is compromised, since she often can’t perform. (Many “ruined” women have to wear colostomy bags, though none do in the production.)

However, Christian convinces Mama to take Sophie and find ways that Sophie can help. Sophie becomes the establishment’s chanteuse. Condola Rashad has a maplesyrup voice that smoothly and beautifully flows – she could likely have a huge career as a singer, if she chooses. She is hauntingly lovely as Sophie.

The other young woman Mama is convinced to take in is Salima, played by a husky-voiced versatile Quincy Tyler Bernstine.

Bernstine has a stop-the-production monologue where she demonstrates pleasure and wonder and anguish and pain and solace and resolve and anger all in a few lines. Salima is the spokeswoman for Congolese women everywhere.

Thankfully, though the play was created after doing dozens of interviews with victims, it’s not a series of reports of interviews, but a fully created, personalized story, with a beginning, middle, and end. Nottage embraces the theatrical environment to tell a story of one particular establishment struggling to survive. It’s easy to imagine the hundreds of similar kinds of small business establishments, working to get through the civil unrest, not knowing who is supposed to be in charge from one day to the next.

Though the circumstances of the women is horrific, the script pulls back from yanking on the audience’s emotions. So much so that it might be too disconnected. A horrible moment toward the end is so quick that it lets the audience off the hook too fast, perhaps.

The physical production is gorgeous, from the lights to sound to versatile set design and original music by Dominic Kanza with lyrics by Lynn Nottage. From Seattle, the production will move to the Geffen Playhouse in California. Not encouraged for children under about 16 years, it’s a stunning production and a marvelous theatrical evening, with an important subject to understand. Lobster – Seattle’s longest-running ‘80s dance party!

Rock Lobster is just what the dance doctor ordered. Seattle Gay News checked out the party last Thursday and found that at Rock Lobster, the weekend starts on Thursday night!

First and foremost, I’ve got to hand it to Rock Lobster’s hostess, GLAMAZONIA, for creating an atmosphere of fun that leaves you begging for more. Each Thursday, GLAM does a tribute performance to an artist of the ‘80s; last week’s tributee was the one and only Boy George. GLAM’s Boy, a la the Culture Club era, was spoton! From the makeup to the costume (with some mad harmonica skills!), GLAM delivered the best “Karma Chameleon” since Boy George’s painted face appeared on TVs across the world. Immediately following the performance, GLAM handpicked audience members that had donned ‘80s apparel (that’s right, kids, dressing the part is highly encouraged!) for gift giveaways that included a VHS tape of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and a DeBarge record! Fun! Fabulous!

It’s all about the music, right? I mean, seriously, the ‘80s produced some of the best music ever made for dancing – even if you can’t dance. DJ Trent Von spins all the familiar hits by Madonna (when she was young), Cher (when she was, um … younger), and the usual suspects like Culture Club, The Cure, and the like. However, and this has happened to me each and every time I’ve gone to Rock Lobster: A song will come on that you either have forgotten about or just didn’t realize you liked so much, when the party is over you go home, and download it immediately.

The beauty of Rock Lobster is its simplicity. Show up – in fab ‘80s wear if you so choose – and dance. Having a great time while cruising the cute boys and girls to the soundtrack of your childhood or high school years is easy as pie!
