With a new tour of Frank Sinatra’s music, Michael Feinstein took time away from the piano bench to talk to the Seattle Gay News in preparation for his Benaroya Hall concert.

Eric Andrews-Katz: At an early age you took piano lessons and angered your teachers because you preferred to play music “by ear.”

How much later was it that you finally learned to read music?

Michael Feinstein: Actually, never. Ninety percent of the time I still play by ear. I can read a melody line from a popular song, but I still can’t read scores of music. 8:30 PM, Limited Engagement When was the last time you saw 20 different celebrities in one night? I saw three times that amount June 5 at the opening night of the Edward Twins’ Celebrities On Stage show at Julia’s On Broadway.

Seattle, consider the bar for entertainment raised.

The two brothers impersonate celebrities visually and vocally. When Eddie Edwards sings Bette Midler, he arrives onstage looking like, sounding like, walking and talking like The Divine Miss M. It’s uncanny. When Anthony plays Billy Joel, it’s as if he’s channeled the Piano Man courtesy thed.com

The big question for any Gay fan of the hit TV series is, “How was Adam Lambert?” Good, but not exceptionally great because unfortunately he lipsynced a portion of his four-song performance.

Lipsyncing isn’t uncommon in the live music circuit – Madonna and Janet Jackson have both done it – but the difference with Lambert is that he doesn’t do it well enough to hide it.

Lambert came on stage near the end of the concert, opening with a ballsy rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” and a capable re-do of Muse’s “Starlight.” Tall, spiked hair, and smothered in blueblack eye makeup, the American Idol runner-up looked much different than any of the other nine contestants on this national tour.

Celebrating 36 Years!

Brüno will both incite homophobia and make bigots squirm Brüno a fearlessly funny film

Surely no cinema can be so influential that it sways public opinion for or against prejudice? After all, it is only a film. Moreover, it is a comedy and was never intended to be taken seriously. Fair point. But although it may not create homophobia, perhaps it can reinforce and inflame it? Go see Brüno. You decide.

One meaty blonde bullet-head was actually crying angrily over the mano y mano erotic display apparently disrupting the sanctity of the WWF (Wing-nut Wrestling Federation?) event. What a puss!

When Brüno isn’t being pelted with chairs and garbage by a bunch of white trash knuckleheads willing to plop down big money for a pro wrestling sideshow, he’s variously being chased, ejected, verbally abused, threatened, and laughed at, not to mention getting whipped by a platinum blonde dominatrix with a set of fake tits eclipsed only by her bad attitude.

Despite all the mayhem and yuks, Cohen retains a knack for getting folks to say all the nasty stuff bubbling up inside their head.

His disarming nature proves the undoing of his targets over and over. Whether playing into their bigotry, playing social bait ‘n’ switch, or playing them for rubes, Cohen finds a way to make an ass out of them.

And making an ass out of these folks is good, even if witnessing their antics tempers the comedy. We have to know ignorance is out there, and seeing the ignorant say hateful things is a good reminder. The queasiness of the climactic scenes in the pro wrestling cage, with its blend of hilarity and disgust, was mitigated by the sweetly comic ending in which Brüno sings along with Bono, Elton, Snoop, and Sting, while being accompanied on the guitar by Slash. It’s nice to see these musical icons come together to send a musical message to homophobic assholes everywhere, and that message is: What’s your damage?

The movie rolls back the boundaries, with its in-your-face raw portrayals of Gay sexuality. Some might argue that this honesty and debunking of taboos is refreshing and groundbreaking. But do these no-holdsbarred erotic depictions advance or reverse public acceptance of Queer life?

Brüno Opening July 10 The new Sacha Baron Cohen vehicle, Brӥno, is a funny film. It’s drop-your-cocktail funny. It’s pee-your-hybrid-boxer-briefs funny. It’s bronzed-forehead-vein-popping funny. Brӥno is also a disturbingly revealing look at some of the most frighteningly revolting people the human race has ever spawned.

Brӥno picks up where Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan left off. Brӥno is a Queer Austrian fashionista who falls out of favor in Europe. He then sets out to find uber fame in Los Angeles. His quest begins in Hollywood, but takes him all over the world and through a nice slice of Middle America, including a couple of hilarious stops in the Southern milieu.

Cohen, the man behind Brüno, Borat, and Ali G, is a brave guy. He’s a fearless comic willing to go to just about any length to get a laugh. However, he’s also a wily satirist who goes places and says things that could easily get him killed, or at least a little bloodied.

Though he seems to know what he’s doing, I couldn’t help wondering what would happen if something went wrong.

Cohen constantly pushes the limit, even if you get the feeling that some of the shtick is staged. From his live-action talking penis to the seduction of Ron Paul (yes, that Ron Paul), Cohen dives into his craft enthusiastically. Yeah, Brӥno is not for the squeamish, but that’s why the pay-off is so sweet.

by Peter Tatchell SGN Contributing Writer Note: This is an edited extract from a longer review that appears in the July issue of Attitude magazine, alongside an exclusive interview with Brüno/Sacha Baron Cohen. www.attitude.co.uk Sacha Baron Cohen’s movie Borat was a masterpiece of comedy; arguably the most inventive satire for many years. Its unique genre of wicked, sophisticated parody set the bar very high; so high that Cohen’s latest comedic outing, Brüno, is something of a letdown. After all the hype, I feel cheated.

While the film scores plenty of laughs by mercilessly exposing dim-witted homophobes, Brüno’s persona also embodies some really lazy, crude Gay stereotypes. A sex-obsessed “cockaholic,” he is a shallow bitchy queen who uses and abuses everyone around him. Not nice.

On the plus side, ultra-Gay Brüno will make many bigoted straight people feel uncomfortable, which is a delicious prospect. But quite a few Gay men watching this movie may also squirm with discomfort.

Does Brüno reinforce or undermine homophobia? I am not sure. If Cohen’s intention was to mock prejudice, this film doesn’t always pull off the money shot. Compared to Borat, it is more hit and miss.

As a spoof on the fashion industry, homophobia and fame-hungry wannabes, the movie had immense potential. But the end product lacks the consistent, spot-on, intelligent, high-class wit that we expect from Baron Cohen. It relies too much for its laughs on sexually-explicit shock and awe, with endless gob-smacking images of penises, dildos, fuck machines, bondage and group sex; plus arse waxing and anal

bleaching. Funny but crude.

As most of us know from the film’s prepublicity, Brüno is an outrageously Gay fashion reporter from Vienna who wants to be “the biggest Austrian superstar since Adolf Hitler.” His route to stardom is, thankfully, more mein camp than Mein Kampf.

After he gets blacklisted in his homeland for his tasteless fame-hungry antics, Brüno travels to the US in a vainglorious bid to hit the big-time.

The film follows his many misadventures, including Brüno attempting to butch-up by joining an army training camp and his hilarious attempt to seduce the pro-family values congressman Ron Paul.

Parodying Madonna, Brüno goes to Africa where he exchanges his iPod for a black baby. He christens him OJ, a typical African American name, he says. Dressing him in a t-shirt emblazoned with the word “Gayby,” he parades him on a TV chat show, describing his child as a “dick magnet” and showing photos of himself and OJ in a Gay hottub orgy, to the predictable (and justifiable) outrage of the studio audience.

In another scene, Brüno seeks advice on how to overcome his homosexuality from a former Gay man turned Christian cure therapist. There is a brilliant tense moment when he compliments the therapist on his gorgeous blow-job lips, which evokes a quivering uncertain, panicked response from this supposedly “cured” ex-Gay. The cage-fighting scene is also tops. The stadium crowd eggs-on the two protagonists to beat the hell out of each other, but goes berserk with homophobic rage when they start kissing and fondling each other instead. Stiller and Leigh in the movie with no name Depending on who you’re asking, Ben Stiller’s new film is called Greenberg. Not that it matters much right now, because the other details are so promising. Start with Gay super-producer Scott Rudin, a man with a list of critical and commercial hits longer than your leg. Add co-producer Jennifer Jason Leigh (who will also co-star) and then let writer-director Noah Baumbach take over. His indie successes The Squid and The Whale and Margot at The Wedding have made him the go-to guy for borderlinequeasy comic dysfunction and dialogue with a bite worse than its bark. But will the addition of Stiller affect the film or will the film affect him, especially after a string of broad mainstream comedies that put all of his darker tendencies in a tightly locked box?

Here’s hoping for the latter; it would be nice to see him act opposite something other than a monkey and a green screen again.

Rosie Back on (Off) Broadway Love, Loss and What I Wore began life as a best-selling book by Ilene Beckerman but will head to an off-Broadway stage this fall with a rotating all-star cast of female leads, including Rosie O’Donnell, Kristin Chenoweth, The Daily Show’s Samantha Bee, Tyne Daly and Rita Wilson. Adapted by Nora and Delia Ephron, who are calling it “The Vagina Monologues without the vaginas,” the play is a collection of vignettes and stories about clothing as triggers for recollections about universal female experiences.

And to sweeten the draw for audiences, the entire show will benefit Dress For Success, a work clothing and job support charity for low-income women; ticket holders are also encouraged to donate used purses and other accessories at performances. You get a nice show, a woman in need gets a cool bag, and Rosie gets to see what these so-called “purses” are all about.

that’s because lately her personal struggles have been all we’ve heard about when we hear about her. So it’s great to have something nice and work-related to talk about, especially since: a) It’s a weird little horror comedy called All About Evil, and b) it co-stars Mink Stole and Cassandra “Elvira, Mistress of The Dark” Peterson, and c) the whole thing is written and directed by a man named Joshua Grannell, better known to Left Coast audiences as legendary San Francisco drag performer Peaches Christ.

The plot? A mousy librarian turns serial killer, makes snuff films of her crimes and becomes a sensation on the horror movie circuit. Stop, Peaches C., you’re piling on almost too much awesome for one movie!

The sight gags and unsightly gore is in postproduction now, coming soon – aka 2010 – to a cult film-friendly movie theater near you.

Jane Lynch breaks into the boys club Sometime when you weren’t looking, Jane Lynch decided to take over American comedy. Happily perfecting the lost art of being reliable support staff, she’s wickedly funny in movie after movie (not to mention TV, where she’s about to steal every Glee scene she’s in this fall) and has seemingly cloned herself in order to appear in just about every guy-based comedy (Role Models, The 40 Year-Old Virgin, Talladega Nights) in existence. And now she’s got Hot Fuzz bromancers Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as allies in Paul, the new comedy from Superbad director Greg Mottola. The inseparable Brits play two comic book fans who wind up in the company of an alien named Paul (Seth Rogen). While the boys may get top billing – picture due in 2010 – it’s a lock that Lynch, who consistently knocks it out of the park with her slightly-crazed one-liners, will bring plenty of laughs.

Parade,” and a medley of some of the Diva’s biggest hits. Suddenly his brother arrived, dressed as Andrea Bocelli, for a duet.

The next superstar to make an appearance was Sir Elton John. Anthony’s Elton, dressed in red blazer, with spiked wig and Elton-esque sunglasses, had the audience singing along to “Philadelphia Freedom,” “The Bitch is Back,” and “Crocodile Rock.”

When Anthony performed “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues,” I saw a couple hold hands and another couple kiss; the mood had been set.

It was now time for Cher to make her appearance – and what an appearance it was.

Eddie, dressed in a silver floor-length gown, flawlessly delivered the 1970s hit “The Way of Love.” After singing a medley of “Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves” and “Dark Lady,” he returned wearing the costume Cher wore in the famous “If I Could Turn Back Time” video. The audience responded as if it really was Cher. The illusion was so good you almost forget you are watching an impersonation. In true camp fashion, Eddie began to sing “I Got You Babe” when out of nowhere Anthony appeared as – you guessed it – Sonny Bono.

After the Sonny and Cher bit, Anthony returned to the stage as himself. Wearing a black tuxedo, he gave the audience a rundown of some of his best vocal impersonations. By far, even without make-up and costume, that was my favorite part of the show. Anthony delivered Rod Stewart, Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, and Tina Turner.

When he sang Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” the audience sang along. Kermit the Frog made an appearance, as well as Luciano Pavarotti.

“My twin brother and I have been doing the act for about 20 years, and strive to give people the best entertainment for a reasonable price,” Anthony Edwards told SGN. Reasonable price is right; tickets to the Edwards Twins show are $20. The dinner menu at Julia’s has been changed, so I recommend arriving at 6:30 p.m. and having a meal before the show. I personally recommend the stuffed chicken entrée. If you are interested in VIP seats, and would like to meet with one of the entertainers after the show, Julia’s offers that experience for $30 as well.

From the first note to the last, the twins owned the audience. Because the two brothers can impersonate over 100 celebrities, the show’s lineup is always changing.

“You never know who will make an appearance,” Anthony told SGN. “You could see us week after week and still see new material.”

After the show I couldn’t help but overhear all the chatter from the audience. It was all the same. “That was amazing,” “I can’t believe how many voices they can impersonate.” I even heard people making plans to buy tickets again.

“We have been told there has never been a show like ours in Seattle,” Anthony said. “If people have never seen an impersonation show, or had a bad experience in the past, we hope they will give us a chance. If they come see us we’ll change there mind and hopefully wow them.”

This is a must see show. They perform at Julia’s Sunday through Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. The impersonations are amazing, the show is fun, and you’ll find yourself walking away with a smile on your face.

Celebrating 36 Years!

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer Blood: The Last Vampire Now Playing The new vampire film, Blood: The Last Vampire goes where I, who have been trying to rework a time-honored tradition in my own horror writing, have been wanting to go for some time, and, trust me, this is a good thing. Think of it as an idea that’s been long overdue: samurai vampires, or at least a samurai vamp.

The heroine in this, yet another take-off from a graphic novel, is young Saya (lovely Gianna Jun), who is assigned to take out a “nest” of evil vamps by the secret organization she works for. Landing in Tokyo after a wicked-cool killing of an evil vamp on a subway train, young Saya is undercover as a “typical schoolgirl” at a Tokyo army base. Only there’s nothing typical about this schoolgirl, including the fact that she’s dressed in one of those anime school outfits (the long-skirted sailor suit variety, not the “pink pineapple” variety), and has this “I’ll kick your ass if you mess with me” attitude.

And before you can say, “I want to suck your blood,” young Saya’s defending the general’s daughter (equally lovely Alison Miller) from two female vamps determined to take out the curious girl, someone they’ve

Between the Lines

by Bobbi Marolt (Bold Strokes, $16.95) The climax comes late, literally, in this emotionally complex story about two wealthy gal pals whose past secrets keep getting in the way of their happily-ever-after future. Blockbuster romance writer Gail Prescott discards lovers like soiled Kleenex, shying away from commitment because she‘s haunted by past tragedy. So she wards off the professional and personal advances of acclaimed British actress Tannen Albright, herself haunted by the role she played in the death of her husband. Both women are weighed down by their emotional baggage, even as Albright moves into Prescott’s swank home for weeks on end. The women snuggle on the couch for late-night movies, dine together, swim together, party together, caress each other – it’s the female equivalent of a bromance! – but can’t quite tumble into bed together. Marolt’s novel of passion denied and consummation delayed builds with agonizing fits and starts to, no surprise, an inevitable lusty conclusion. It’s a journey to sexual fulfillment bristling with smart, intense dialogue between two characters who

decided they can’t let live. Wielding a delicious cloud-tempered katana sword, Saya takes out the two baddies, much to the horror of the general’s daughter, who witnesses the whole thing. Only when she tells her principal, no one believes her, until more horrid things happen, like the death of her dad at the hands of one of the secret organization’s turncoat minions. Thus Saya and Ms. Army Brat set off to pursue the head of the vampire clan, an evil one named Onegin, who Saya wants dead for the death of Saya’s dad and Saya’s trainer, the person who taught her to use that killer sword and all of those wonderful martial arts moves.

Epic fight scenes, with Saya kicking butt, nearly getting killed and a scene similar to one in Blade, where Ms. Army Brat has to save our half human/half vamp heroine via a spontaneous blood “transfusion” from a slit hand.

A cut above the last vamp film, the teenangst Twilight, this film rocks, and once again gives fans of the genre something to cheer about. This, and the fact that once again, there are two kickass girls, who don’t cower in the corner, waiting for the guys to save them, is worth seeing Blood: The Last Vampire for, if nothing else. Me, I’d see it a hundred more times, just to watch that battle between Saya and the head vamp, Onegin, which ends with a twist I won’t reveal here.

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN Contributing Writer I Love You, Beth Cooper Opening July 10 Tragically un-hip Denis Cooverman (Paul Rust) is his school’s valedictorian, and at the urging of best friend Rich Munsch (Jack T. Carpenter), he’s going to give a graduation speech no one will ever forget. He’s going to declare his undying love for Beth Cooper (Hayden Panettiere), and even if the rest of the student body thinks he’s insane, at least the senior will head off to college with zero regrets.

What Denis did not expect was for the blonde bombshell and her two best friends Cammy (Lauren London) and Treece (Lauren Storm) to arrive on his front doorstep looking to party. Things are unsurprisingly awkward, but when Beth’s militaristic older boyfriend Kevin (Shawn Roberts) also arrives, wanting to pound the gawky grad into the pavement, it’s up to the former head cheerleader to whisk him, Rich, and her two girlfriends to safety in her beat-up hatchback.

As the wildest night of his life takes off, Denis realizes giving that speech might have been the best decision of his life. All that’s left to do now is to survive until morning and reap the unexpected benefits.

Based on the popular novel by screenwriter and one-time writer and supervising producer for The Simpsons, Larry Doyle, the rambunctious teen comedy I Love You, Beth Cooper marks Home Alone and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone director Chris Columbus’ return to the genre for the first time in 14 years. Unfortunately, the man responsible for unhinged cult favorites like Gremlins (he wrote the script) and Adventures in Babysitting, as well as massive family hits like Mrs. Doubtfire, isn’t hitting on all cylinders, and despite a couple of off the wall moments and some inspired bits of lunacy, this isn’t a movie anyone involved with is likely to list all that high on their respective resumes.

Pity, because the seeds for a Risky Business or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (one of whose stars, Alan Ruck, makes an appearance) style winner are all in place. Doyle and Columbus take no prisoners, no corner too dark or crevice too disgusting for them

to venture inside of. At the same time, there is potentially a sweetly enchanting innocence to the protagonist’s journey that could have made me smile, the ultimate destination one young and old alike can easily find parts of themselves within.

But none of it ever comes together. The whole movie has a haphazard inelegance that is ungainly and annoying. It is almost as if playing in J.K. Rowling’s sandbox for so long, directing a theatrical version of the Broadway musical Rent and producing both of the Night at the Museum behemoths has dulled Columbus’ comedic senses, the director unable to string scenes together no matter how hard he tries.

It does not help that Rust, for all his plucky abandon to throw himself into whatever mischief required of him, makes a poor Denis. The kid’s comedic timing is a mess, which is rather odd considering he stood out so marvelously in Will Ferrell’s Semi-Pro. Here, however, he is miscast, and not for a second did I buy him as either the smartest kid in school or the soulfully sincere nebbish capable of winning Beth’s heart.

Once upon a time, actors like Tom Cruise, Matthew Broderick or Anthony Michael Hall would play this type of character, and while their movie-star looks varied, each of them still offered up irresistible bits of magnetic charm which made them unforgettable. Modern versions of this archetype have been embodied by the likes of Jason Biggs and Emile Hirsch, and while their films (American Pie, The Girl Next Door) aren’t exactly memorable what they were able to do inside of them certainly was.

Rust isn’t in that group’s company. Heck, he even does the unthinkable and makes the likes of Freddie Prinze, Jr. look like an Oscar-winning superstar. Even when the script gets things right or the few times Columbus manages to ebulliently connect the dots, the actor lets them down, and save for one nearpriceless bit on a dock between him and his costar, I’m finding it tough to come up with nice things to say about him.

The film isn’t a total loss. Heroes actress Panettiere is solid, while Sydney White and The Return of Jezebel James star Carpenter continues to show he’s deserving of better material than what he keeps getting offered.

Unwieldy Beth Cooper impossible to love

Unfortunately, a few decent insights, a handful of humorous moments and three or four solid performances do not a movie make. For the most part, I Love You, Beth Cooper is a cumbersome disaster. Its star

oozes zero charisma, while Columbus shows little of the touch even lesser efforts like Nine Months or Stepmom somehow managed. While not 2009’s worst film, it certainly isn’t anything to write home about, and anyone willing to profess their affinity for this eyesore should probably have their head examined.

While I was hoping to be blown away

by Adam Lambert, it was Allison Iraheta that really impressed me. Yes, she went a little over the top on Heart’s “Barracuda,” yet she had such wonderful energy and spunk. Whereas Lambert was robotic, Iraheta seemed more loose and confident, even when the pair dueted on Foghat’s “Slow Ride.”

In Lambert’s defense, he doesn’t fit the American Idol mold, and maybe he’s come to realize this. Once he wraps up this tour and gets cracking on his own career, I expect we’ll see a big star rise before us, but for right now he’s still trapped in this mainstream, Top 40 puppet-and-string act and unable to flex his true muscle.

Idol winner Kris Allen, wearing a very form-fitting pair of jeans, waltzed through “Heartless” and “Ain’t No Sunshine” as fans in the front rows snapped photo after photo of him. He led everyone in an uplifting version of “Hey Jude” before the entire cast dabbled on the jukebox favorite “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey.

It may appear I’m being harsh in my review of this American Idols concert – they are amateurs after all, right? – but these are aspiring singers who want to be taken seriously, who in a matter of months are going to ask us to buy their records and make their musical dreams come true. If they’re going to step into reality in the very near future, what needs to be said – and I have no problem saying it – is that they need to convince those outside the Idol bubble that they can go beyond re-recording a pop classic. Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry and even the Tony-nominated Constatine Maroulis found their footing post-Idol, and these group of youngsters will have to do it as well.

This particular show on Tuesday was too High School Musical, and maybe I expected too much, but at $50 a ticket (with fees) it should have given me something more to talk about. It should have made me want to eagerly see what these kids are going to do in the months ahead, and with the exception of Adam Lambert, who perhaps was trying to fit in with an ensemble that he really doesn’t fit into begin with, I’m not jazzed on what any of them do down the road.

when Lambert’s giant, broad frame showed itself through dark lighting. I, too, had anticipated the presence of this new star in his first Northwest appearance – yet, while he worked the stage from side to side, his 15-minute set time and choice of music resulted in a barely-there performance.

A three-number David Bowie medley – “Life on Mars,” “Fame,” “Let’s Dance” – seemed an appropriate fit for the edgy Lambert, though what it lacked was the edge.

Instead, each of these condensed songs, especially the last one, was delivered as a runof-the-mill pop tune. If you’re going to do Bowie, do Bowie justice.

But Lambert is not primarily to blame for his less-than-stellar showing on Tuesday night; it was the tour organizers for handing him and the other performers a list of Top 40 radio fare without any real creativity. Take, for instance, Lil Rounds’ version of “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” – there was no deviation from the original cut, it sounded just like Beyonce’s, just not as good. Ditto for the Memphis native’s take on Mary J. Blige’s “Be Without You” – it was nice, but it was safe and took no detours from the original recording.

The silliest of the 10 finalists was Anoop Desai, who sucked all the genuine sweetness out of Willie Nelson’s “You Are Always on My Mind” and turned it into a cheesy ballad, and then took a pathetic stab at Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative.” Another laughable moment was when Danny Gokey tried re-working Michael Jackson’s “PTY (Pretty Young Thing)” – even the guy next to me flipped his thumbs down – and worse was his bland delivery of “Maria, Maria” by Santana and Wyclef Jean. Elsewhere, Scott MacIntyre’s rendition of Keane’s “Bend and Break” was all right, though his vocals lacked the soul of Tom Chaplin’s, but by also choosing to do Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles,” he did an overall reasonable job in matching his piano skills to the right music.

Modular set pieces – a nondescript door frame, corrugated metal walls, a window frame – create the vestiges of locations needed. The crucial technical needs are sound and lights. Robertson Witmer inserts delicate moments of Twilight Zone music, reminiscent of the 1960s, at key moments, leading to a desire to laugh out loud at the soap opera-inspired indications of mystery or danger. Dave Hastings creates pools of light and dark, and includes a star-lit sky motif. They are all you need to take you to another dimension – a dimension known as the Twilight Zone!

All the actors, whether in big parts or small, give good performances. There are even commercials. But they’re not any commercials you would see on television in 1965. Except for the commercials, the tone of the evening is almost reverential. Twilight Zone episodes were moral-laden tales we were supposed to learn from. It is for you to decide if these episodes have any meaning for today’s audience. In the meantime, share the delight of time travel to a time that never really was. Theater Schmeater Through August 9 The ‘60s come to life, for real, at Theater Schmeater this summer! This is a fingerlickin’ good treat. Three actual episodes of the long-running science fiction television series, Twilight Zone, are given a seriously funny treatment on stage. Tim Moore, director and dead ringer for Rod Serling, at least vocally, helps his cast walk the fine line between parody and homage.

The episodes are “Nothing in the Dark,” which features Melanie Calderwood as a woman who hasn’t left her house in years and hears someone get shot outside her door (a police officer played by Larry Leggett).

A contractor who is supposed to evict her, played by Phillip L. Mitchell, also shows up. “The Lonely” features Chris Macdonald as a prisoner who is stranded on a faraway desolate planet, with only two delivery astronauts, James Weidman and Rob Jones, to visit him every three months. Hamlin SGN A&E Writer Utopia, Limited Bagley Wright Theatre Through July 25 The award-winning Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society opens a rare production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s 1893 Utopia, Limited. The show opens tonight at the Bagley Wright Theatre, the home of the Seattle Rep, at the Seattle Center. It continues weekend performances through July 25.

Utopia, Limited is one of the rarest works in the Gilbert & Sullivan canon. True G&S fanatics wait decades for productions of these rarities and travel great distances to complete their own canon, or cycle, of the works. The Seattle G&S Society has not staged Utopia since 1991, and it might well be nearly another 20 years before it returns.

Like the Shakespeare fans who haunt the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and other theaters for rare productions to complete their Shakespeare canon, the Society hopes that G&S fans will turn out in record numbers.

Celebrating its 55th season, the Society is committed to staging all of the G&S works – the most popular and the rarities. It is a brave undertaking in these days of financial uncertainty in all of the arts worldwide to bring Utopia center stage.

All of the G&S operettas were originally very timely, very topical satires. (The most famous satirical lyric in all of G&S is probably, “Stick close to your desk/And never go to sea/And you may be the ruler/Of the Queen’s Navy,” from H.M.S. Pinafore.)

The plot of Utopia focuses on the British banking system of the last decade of Queen Victoria’s lengthy rule. As is typical in G&S modern stagings, topical references are updated. The Society is also moving the setting to 1929, on the eve of the stock market crash and the worldwide financial downturn and depression. Flappers, Wall Street and Gilbert and Sullivan – my, oh my, that should be a musical and visual delight.

Dave Ross, one of the Society’s most popular performers, returns as the King Of Utopia. The cast of 45 actors/singers features 18 principal characters alone. The orchestra has 29 players. In short, this is a ma-

jor production. The Society has won several awards in England for Gilbert & Sullivan stagings, and this one has winner written all over it. Seattle is high on my list of places to perform.

Knittel: You were in the Fall Out Boy music video for their cover of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.” How did that come about?

Sparks: I kind of know those guys in passing. They actually went to the same high school I went to in Chicago. In the video, I play the leader of a fight club that uses Michael Jackson moves to fight. So I had to whip out my best MJ! You only see a little of it in the video, but I did a lot more. I did the moonwalk, a little poppin’ and lockin’ – I ain’t scared! [Laughs.]

Knittel: Over the years, you’ve been involved with a lot of LGBT advocacy work.

Last month was national LGBT month.

What were some of the things you were involved with?

Sparks: I largely spent it doing radio advocacy, which was great. I was able to totally open up, double-gun, on LGBT subjects.

I am pro Gay marriage, and I include some of that in my comedy routine. People ask me if I ever modify my material when I go to places in the country that aren’t Gay-friendly. I tell them, if anything, I double down on the material. So much has changed with the LGBT movement – it’s a good, palpable change. You can see it. In the pantheon of the civil rights movement, the Gay movement is a young one. But within a relatively short amount of time, it’s impressive to see just how far the community has come. But, obviously, there are still a lot of minds that need to be changed, and there is still a long way to go, which is why I continue to support the LGBT community. It’s really reassuring when you go from town to town and city to city and see the population of “Planet Asshole” dwindling. People are changing.

Knittel: Your character on Queer As Folk, Michael Novotny, went through a lot of changes. What was that experience like?

Sparks: My character had to go through a growth process. At first, people didn’t like Michael. In the beginning, he was a complete follower, running around after his best friend. ic and soulful and meaningful. I’ve traveled all over the world, and people still come up to me and tell me their story of how the show helped them in some way. Someone telling me that the show helped them come out is the biggest compliment I can get.

Knittel: The show did make a big impact, so it doesn’t surprise me that people are still talking about it.

Sparks: I used to catch hell all the time when the show first started because I am straight. For some reason, some people just couldn’t get it through their heads that I could kiss guys and simulate sex onscreen and be straight. What they were really asking when they would ask ‘Are you Gay,’ was ‘are you Gay yet?’

Knittel: How so?

Sparks: Well, there are still some people out there that think being Gay is a choice.

Being Gay is not a choice, just like being straight is not a choice. It’s classic homophobic panic. They want to think that if one day they woke up and felt Gay, they could think their way out of it, or if they end up having a kid who is Gay, they could talk them out of it. Those kinds of people couldn’t understand how a straight actor could kiss guys on screen and not be Gay. It’s ridiculous.

Knittel: You’ve been a regular on the VH1 I Love the … series. I gotta ask: ‘70s, ‘80s, or ‘90s?

Sparks: Definitely the ‘80s! I just liked the joy of it all, maybe partly because I was in high school so I was blissfully unaware of politics. I’m a ‘80s metal head, I like big hair and big riffs, as it were. The ‘80s were such a formative time; I lost my virginity, moved out of the house, and drove to California to be an actor. I don’t know about this decade yet, this whole decade has been a wash, really. Then Obama comes sneaking in making everything all awesome again.

Knittel: Anything you want your Gay fans in Seattle to know?

Sparks: You can follow me on Twitter and Facebook and all that stuff. I run the sites myself, so I actually reply. Oh, and also that I do a meet-and-greet after the show for free. Some guys charge for that stuff, and I just don’t get that. So come up and say hi.

However, this isn’t just any pissing contest. Bragging rights are for total artistic commitment. The challenge is diddling your straight buddy and filming it.

The acting is amazing by the talented cast that also collaborated on character development and writing. Delmore is hilarious as she tries to incorporate the idea of her husband trysting with his old friend who she doesn’t really care for in the first place. I’m not sure if she is more frustrated with images of her husband doggie style with a dude or with the fact that it’s Andrew.

And when the boys get down to the nuts and bolts of the deed, their inability to be the first to back down is just as funny as how they try to figure out the logistics of the affair. The sweet tension just keeps building within the small hotel room until I could barely sit still. To the credit of all the writers, the ending is exactly right. Just when you think they’ve painted themselves into a narrative corner, the whole thing ends in what you realize, in retrospect, is the only way it could.

The only real quibble I have with Humpday is the pointless pains taken to insure we see the Dionysus sign on the house in which the Dionysian party takes place. If you already know who Dionysus is, you don’t need the reference. If you don’t know who Dionysus is, it’s lost on you anyway.

The sign did give me a momentary sense of warm superiority as I acknowledged knowing that I knew what the reference meant.

Satisfying, indeed.

If this small detail is all I can find to bitch about, it must be obvious how much I like this film. The collaborative writing between Shelton and the actors is smart and funny.

The characters are fully drawn and force us to consider how relationships change and how they change us. I wondered how they would pull off a film about straight dudes having sex, but this cadre of upstart filmmakers gets the job done splendidly.

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer It’s interesting that in a crowd of folks dressed like every zombie character, from every zombie movie I’ve ever seen (and some I hadn’t), my “Zombie Tools” T-shirt that I purchased at Crypticon, the horror convention I attended back in May, got as much attention as it did. Also in that same venue, it wasn’t the many zombies that got one little pooch upset, but my friend and my director’s chairs that we’d brought to sit on while viewing Shaun of the Dead (the film shown after the record-breaking “zombie walk,” which was that famous zombie scene from the Michael Jackson video of his hit, “Thriller”). Go figure.

But yes, the record was broken, and even recorded by an official from the Guinness Book of World Records (who might have been in a stretch limo that passed the hordes of zombies and movie attendees on the long walk to the parking lot at 34th where the “zombie dance” took place later), as being 5,000 and counting by the time Shaun of the Dead finished its showing around 11 p.m.

People who attended, and might have decided spur of the moment to join the fun, could have themselves made up for a small donation to the Fremont Outdoor Movies, by staff on hand with a collection of appropriate body paint which was either sprayed

on to look like spattered blood, or painted on cheeks or clothing. Many did exactly that, and registered at the last moment to join the record-breaking “zombie Thriller dance.”

And if you hadn’t gotten the moves down perfectly, there was an official who served much as a square dance caller does, to yell out moves and when to do them, so everyone was in sync with the Jackson song, played over loudspeakers in the background. Thus, 5,000+ made-up fans danced, slid, bounced and hopped their way into history last Friday in Fremont, making Seattle known, as one official announced, “not only known for the birthplace of Kenny G and coffee, but also for the largest group of zombies assembled in one place on the planet.” Also on the bill last Friday were two local bands, one of which did a song about the “zombie apocalypse” advertised on my T-shirt (thus the need for correct tools), a zombie contest for the best of several categories of zombie, and a showing of a SIFF (Seattle Film Festival) movie, Zombies of Mass Destruction, which will have a full airing sometime later this year or next year. And so we sat and laughed with thousands of others after this exciting event was over, the stars above us, and maybe a ghostly Jackson himself, knowing that “the gloved one” will now be remembered for, among other things, inspiring the largest zombie walk in recorded history.

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Green Day July 3 Key Arena Fireworks, loud bangs, flames shooting everywhere, confetti showers, boys kissing boys, a blowjob reference. What a 4th of July party, right? Actually, it was a wild and highly energetic performance by Green Day the night before, in which 16,000 riotous fans crammed into Key Arena for two hours of rock bliss. This was the band’s first official date of their 2009 tour schedule, and it proved to be a thrilling start to a long road ahead.

The award-winning threesome began their assault with the title track from the new album, 21st Century Breakdown, as an illuminated city skyline towered above the stage some 40 to 50 feet. Lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong took command of the performance early, standing at the edge of a short catwalk and raising his arms or striking his

fists in the air periodically. Meanwhile, the first of many fireworks built into the stage went off, sounding like a parking lot of tires had all exploded at once.

“Get those hands in the air!” wailed Armstrong, and the crowd did exactly what he said. The dark eye-lined vocalist wore clothes similar to previous tour stops, black Levis with matching long-sleeve shirt and a snappy gray vest.

A furious rendition of “Know Your Enemy,” the leadoff single from the new CD, ignited a series of tall flames from the stage’s midsection, while the audience repeatedly shouted “Hey!” and bounced on the main floor. “Holiday” was an absolute blast and unexpectedly performed early in the show – you could hear a thunderous clap around the arena, as everyone yelled out the lyrics and the pit, just below the stage, turned into an all-out zoo.

“Who’s this little shit right here?” asked Armstrong as he looked into the crowd.

Record broken at Fremont’s Zombie Walk

boy was hoisted onstage by security guards and asked to lead concertgoers in a handwaving session that ended in more startling fireworks.

Several tunes from the critically-hailed 21st Century Breakdown were introduced to fans, among them “The Static Age” and “East Jesus Nowhere,” yet neither paralleled the chilling rendition of “21 Guns,” which opened acoustically and gradually swept into a hard rock ballad, then ended with drummer Tre Cool tapping delicately on the piano, just as a sheet of icicle lights rained on the stage and confetti poured out to the crowd.

“This show right here is the first show of the 21st Century Breakdown!” shouted Armstrong. “And there is no better fucking place to play in than in Seattle, goddamn it, right now!” The audience roared with appreciation.

American Idiot, Green Day’s Grammywinning album from 2004, was well represented with “Jesus of Suburbia,” “Are We the Waiting,” “St. Jimmy,” and a couple of big hits saved for the encore. Interestingly, “She’s a Rebel” and “When September Ends” were not included on the set list.

On “Jesus of Suburbia,” a scrawny teenager was pulled from the pit, wowing Green Day and concertgoers with his impressive guitar chops. Immediately afterwards Armstrong told everyone, “Let’s do something nice for this kid.” Then he quickly looked behind him and said, “Tre, suck his dick!”

The great news for diehard fans was the onslaught of old favorites, such as “Minority,” “Basket Case” and “Brain Stew” – these are songs deep in Green Day’s catalog that initially drew in many of their current devotees.

“Okay, who wants to hear some old shit,” said Armstrong, and the trio ripped into “Geek Stink Break,” which riled up concertgoers even more, followed a lively re-do of “Hitchin’ a Ride” that prompted the singer

to run around on stage with a large squirt gun, then ask everyone, “Is this when the masturbation begins?”

A silly, unnecessary medley of the Isley Brothers’ “Shout” and Ben E. King’s “Stand

by Me,” used in previous Green Day tours, saw the band acting squirrely onstage, donning an array of goofy hats, and basically absorbing five to six minutes that could’ve been used for an original song.

The most interesting point of the night came when an obnoxious male fan was invited onstage and went directly for Billie Joe’s mouth – the two shared a long kiss, and the fan proceeded to sing the lead on “Longview,” a song inspired by Kurt Cobain. Before departing the stage, the crazed fan shouted to the audience as he pointed to Armstrong, “Who wants to fuck this guy?!”

The venue went ballistic, and as annoying as this guy was, he was the envy of many men and women in attendance who’d once dreamed of sharing a juicy kiss with this rock star, rumored to be Bisexual.

Green Day closed out their performance with a riveting three-song encore, which included “American Idiot,” “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and a moving, acoustic version of “Good Riddance (Time of Our Lives),” a song known to many as the final signoff song from the popular TV series Seinfeld.

This was a bravura performance from an artist still climbing, still elevating its star power, and meanwhile still growing artistically and pushing its own boundaries – American Idiot is a rock classic and some would argue that 21st Century Breakdown is an even better work. The intense lighting, numerous pyrotechnics and illuminated background during the concert was a distant second to the two full hours of really good music, and on an evening when Seattle was once again at the center of attention, it was Green Day that stood at the top of the world.

Jesse Colin Young Mercy and Cuteness were amazed by Jesse Colin Young’s show at the Triple Door.

After 40 years in show business, Young is a self-assured and generous musician. He is backed up by a hot bassist, Mike Frost. Michael West’s drums drove the night nicely.

Dexter Juba’s guitar was delicious. Mercy whispered to Cuteness that Young’s wife, Connie, sure knew how to play the violin.

Cuteness whispered back, “That instrument is known as a fiddle, Mercy.” Mercy notes that Young’s website identifies her as a violinist. So, Mercy might have been right in the first place.

The set opened with “Songbird,” a nice sweet place to start. Young continued with “Four in the Morning,” a fine blues song he wrote about life on the Lower East Side in New York. The next song, “Miss Hesitation,” rocked out. The singer continued with a beautiful song about life in his and his wife’s current home in Carolina. Their house in California burned down, causing them to move to Hawaii. He says the most recent move was in response to too many volcanoes there. The set continued with a song about driving a motorcycle on roads in Marin County filled with S-curves.

“Ride the Wind” took us along on that ride.

Mercy’s favorite song was “Sweet Good Times,” about how good times come out of hard times.

Young went on with a song he had written after a visit to the Lakota reservation.

His most recent song, “Bring Them Home,” about Iraq veterans whose post-traumatic stress disorder is not being responded to, moved Mercy and Cuteness. Mercy had some trouble with her candle going out, so she couldn’t write notes at one point in the concert, even though she asked the wait staff for help. Fortunately, neighbors loaned her their light. The concert continued with the band singing John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” intercut with each other. Young pointed out that the songs were written within six months of each other in 1970, their writers clearly picking up each other’s concern.

Young went on to say his 10 years in Hawaii caused him to be addicted to playing ukulele and wearing “shirts like this.”

He played a rendition of “Over the Rainbow” inspired by the skillful musicianship of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, as well as a satirical song, “Hawaii 78,” written by Kamakawiwo’ole. While still playing the uke, Young went on to play a Cajun waltz and a rocking “In the Bayou.” “Act Natural,” provided good advice. When the band left the stage, the audience applauded for a long time, pounding tables until they came back to sing, “Get Together,” and “Darkness, Darkness,” which the audience had been waiting for all evening.

Coffee Klatsch Mercy and Cuteness went to the Women of West Seattle Coffee Klatsch, at C&P coffee. That group meets on the first Saturday of the month at 9:00 a.m. Mercy enjoyed chatting with a woman she figured out she had met, years earlier, in a whole other setting. The group has been meeting for awhile and developing some history.

The Women of West Seattle listserv includes women from all over the area. So, it shouldn’t sound too much of a contradiction in terms, when Mercy tells you they are starting an East Side Coffee Klatsch. They meet on the third Saturday of each month from 9-11 a.m.

Their next meeting will be on July 18 at Grimaldi’s Coffee House which sits in the back of Gilman Village (www.grimaldiscoffee.com/gilman.html).

can Songbook is a loose term. It’s hard to quantify the specific years it encompasses and songs that stand the test of time. Usually these songs are primarily associated with the 1920s-50s; the Golden Era of Creativity for America’s popular music. But Billy Joel and Carol King are included; the subject is ever-evolving.

Andrews-Katz: What responsibilities do you hold as its archivist?

Feinstein: As time progresses, I realize that it’s important to me to collect the music and to share it with others, for those interested and those of younger generations that don’t know anything about this [era] of music yet. I want this to survive.

Andrews-Katz: In your early 20s, you started working as cataloger for the personal collection of Ira Gershwin. Would you say he was a mentor or more of a friend?

Feinstein: I think we have to define those words first.

Andrews-Katz: That’s very true. Let’s try, was Ira Gershwin a personal influence on you?

Feinstein: I learned a lot of what I know from Ira, on how to interpret this type of music. He was there when they were written – if he didn’t write it himself – and so he was living history. He was very generous in how he shared his knowledge with me. My time with him was my college education.

Andrews-Katz: Would you say Ira Gershwin was a personal friend?

Feinstein: We became very close friends.

He was like a grandfather to me and left me in charge of his estate, with two others. I was one of his executors, which was born out of his trust and faith in me. I’ve never forgotten that.

Andrews-Katz: How did you get to know Gershwin’s next-door neighbor, Rosemary Clooney?

Feinstein: Rosemary had quite a few cats and Mrs. Gershwin bought fresh shrimp daily. The cats were always over. Mrs. Gershwin would tell me, “Rosemary is not taking care of her cats, go over and tell her that her cats are undernourished.” I’d go next door and eventually we became good friends.

Andrews-Katz: You’ve done classic collaborations like Jerry Herman, as well more contemporary ones like John Bucchino. Do you have a favorite composer whose work you prefer?

Feinstein: I don’t have one favorite. What makes it more difficult is that I don’t consider contemporary composers to be any less talented than any of the “masters.” It’s a very difficult thing in choosing one genius over another.

Andrews-Katz: You have one nightclub in Manhattan and the newly opened Feinstein’s at the Shaw in London. What made you decide to open the nightclubs, and do you have any desire to open a third?

Feinstein: Like many other entertainers, I had a fantasy of opening a nightclub.

Thanks to my friendship with the owners of the Regency in New York, it came true. That allowed me to spread my wings and open the second one. I wanted to do it simply be-

These are pieces of music selected by the performers, so they are ones they resonate with, and they explain why. You can’t beat that for an entertainment bargain. cause there is something special about performing songs in an intimate setting, playing that genre of music. Playing for 150-250 people can be just as fulfilling as playing for 150,000. I’d like to open another in San Francisco; it’s always been special to me. I had some of my early success there, and I have a connection to the city.

Andrews-Katz: If you could perform with any singer –living or dead – who would it be?

Feinstein: Ethel Waters. She died in 1977 and she was one of the pioneers of American popular singing. She continues to be one of my favorite inspirations. She’s largely forgotten, but her influence was extraordinary.

I would have loved to be in her presence. Although, to those who knew her, she did have a reputation of being a difficult person.

Andrews-Katz: What was it like to work recently with Washington State native Cheyenne Jackson at your club?

Feinstein: We had a fantastic time. He is a dazzling singer. Too bad he’s ugly! [Sarcastic laugh.] Seriously, Cheyenne is a marvelous artist. We both had fun and were as comfortable on stage as if we were in our own living room, and that kind of comfort level only comes synergistically; it’s not something you can plan. Musically, we are both proud of what we’ve accomplished.

We want to work together again. He’s very facile. He’s also just a heck of a lot of fun!

Andrews-Katz: How long have you and your husband, Terrance Flannery, been together?

Feinstein: We’ll be together 12 years. We were married in October 2008 in Los Angeles.

Andrews-Katz: With Judge Judy Sheindlin performing the ceremony?

Feinstein: We were together and didn’t feel any urgency to get married, but Judy urged and felt it would be important for us to do it, emotionally and physically, and she was right! She is very much in support of marriage equality. She was also pleased to perform a ceremony because it demonstrated her beliefs. She has 10 million viewers and is characteristically not afraid to express her point of view. She had to receive legal authority to sign our marriage license in California, so she called Maria Shriver, I think, to get authority.

Andrews-Katz: How did you come up with the current concert tribute to Frank Sinatra?

Feinstein: Frank was very nice early in my career when he didn’t have to be. I’ve never forgotten his kindness and I’ve wanted, for a while now, to celebrate his contribution to American popular music. I’m trying to give a sense of Sinatra without copying him. I love working with a big band. A 17-piece band creates a sheer power and sends a thrill up your spine. For me, there’s a tremendous charge, but the audience experiences a powerful time. It’s overwhelming in the most wonderful way there is, really.

Michael Feinstein made his professional debut 25 years ago. With a soft-spoken voice that is reminiscent of the crooner style of yesteryear, it is no wonder he’s recorded more than 24 albums and is a four-time Grammy nominee. The Sinatra Project adds another venue for him as it marks Michael’s first tribute to another performer.

our government would value the worth of artists with such importance and commitment. It’s wonderful to visit these studios, meeting the artists and seeing their workspaces filled with fine crafted and unique goods and to wander through all the other small shops, listening to busking musicians along the way and spending a whole relaxing day at the market.

A trip to the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (www. moa.ubc.ca) is in order. This beautifully designed, contemporary building, set on a cliff, with a breathtaking view over the sea, has one of the most stunning and comprehensive permanent collections of Northwest Coast Native art work, including majestic totem poles set outside the museum.

Another destination for leisurely meandering in Vancouver is along West 4th Avenue, down the street from Jericho Beach Park. Head down this street, eastbound from the park, and check out all the interesting small, independently owned shops, cafes and restaurants in the arty Kitsilano neighborhood. Banyen Books and Sound, 3608 W. 4th Ave., (www.banyen.com), in business since 1970, is a wonderful, spiritually-oriented bookstore filled with books, CDs, DVDs, and beautiful goods to refresh the soul. It is also a community hub, where you can find lots of information about workshops, concerts and other events going on around Vancouver.

Amethyst Creations, 2746 W. 4th Ave., with its purple storefront and charming,

handmade sign, is a great find for crystals and an exotic array of other minerals in their natural form, as well as stone beads and jewelry and has been an integral fixture in the neighborhood for years. The Naam Restaurant, 2724 W. 4th Ave. (www. thenaam.com), one of the iconic community businesses in Vancouver, is the oldest natural foods restaurant in the city, serving delicious, reasonably priced vegetarian food for over 40 years. The Naam is open 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas, has a wood burning fireplace, a garden patio (enclosed in winter), and features live blues, jazz or folk music seven nights a week. Head to Raviolino, 2822 W. 4th Ave. (www.raviolino.shawbiz.ca) for a delightful and scrumptious lunch or early dinner of fresh, homemade ravioli, cannelloni, mezzaluna, pasta or tortellini with delectable sauces. This place is a real find and I never leave Vancouver without eating here!

Run by a lovely couple, Giuseppe and Maria Frasca – he an Italian, she a Peruvian – their business first got started in Lima, Peru in 1982. They have been serving the Vancouver community since 2002. Maria brings a Peruvian touch, creating delicious, unusual desserts/baked goods from her culture, rarely available in the Northwest. You can eat in or take out at Raviolino.

A long weekend in Vancouver, B.C. is recommended. It is simple, easy and inexpensive, yet rich and full, with a diverse variety of new, exciting and satisfying experiences.

The Market is filled with open artists’ studios/ shops, where artists create and sell their goods. These studios are subsidized by the government, allowing artists to thrive, with affordable rents.
