by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN Contributing Writer Santa Baby Seattle Men’s Chorus Benaroya Hall Through December 20 Thanksgiving is known to kick off the holiday shopping season, but this year it also begins the 30th anniversary of the Seattle Men’s Chorus. Starting two days after Thanksgiving, the chorus began with all the festiveness of a seasonal popper. Santa Baby is this year’s traditional holiday show from the SMC, and they perform with celebrated stage/television/ screen star Ms. Betty Buckley.

Summoned by the music of Benaroya Hall’s prominent pipe organ, the chorus of more than 300 men filed in, taking their places among the risers. Under Dennis Coleman’s conduction, the chorus invoked the season with a series of traditional carols sung in Latin.

For the next two hours, audiences were treated to a combination of traditional, modern and comical songs of the season.

Scenes were performed on the stage while the SMC sung behind. The “Little Shop of Horrors” song, “Downtown” got revised to reflect a comical look at seasonal shopping. Captain Smartypants, a smaller specialty group within

Ivie has already worked on four Broadway shows, either at the 5th Avenue or actually in New York.

The Road a bleak, challenging stunner

“Tremendously sexual.” This is how I’d describe Peaches as the ground was shaking at the Showbox at the Market on November 24, as all her Seattle fans were screaming her name.

A show-stopper and a panty-dropper, Peaches doesn’t just play chords; she fucks her guitar against the microphone stand.

After the opening act, Peaches’ band, Sweet Machine, came to the stage without her. Standing motionless with their heads bowed, wearing black masks with fringe to conceal their faces, they waited for the star to come out and face the crowd. Anticipation was rampant as Peaches made her way onstage in a five-foot black mask that was somehow both nostalgic and ultramodern.

After the first song she began stripping down, revealing her blonde hair that waved nonstop throughout the entire show. A large portion of the set featured Peaches playing a glowing sound stick. Moving her hands up to create a higher tone and down to create a lower one, she had a fine rapid mixture of the two that would turn even the Gayest boy on earth into a kitten in heat.

Jumping in, out and over the crowd, the star songstress performed “Talk To Me,” “More,” “Show Stopper” and many more from her new album I Feel Cream, released in early May of this year.

Donning a white jacket and sunglasses for “I U She,” she also performed “Shake Yer Dix,” much to the satisfaction of the crowd.

The Road is not without hope. Hillcoat sprinkles subtle notes of rebirth throughout the film. A few blades of grass or a beetle are rife with meaning in this landscape.

That brings me to the ending. I can’t say much about it, because giving even the slightest hint of why I didn’t like it would give it away. Suffice to say, I did not like the ending. For those who have read the novel, it takes that ending one step further – one step too far, in my opinion.

Maybe Thanksgiving was the perfect day to release The Road after all. This flick will certainly make you consider all the little things, and big ones, you should be thankful for. And, who knows?

This could have been the last Thanksgiving ever.

The Road Now Playing How do you solve a problem like The Road, the oft-delayed John Hillcoat helmed film based on Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel? Rumor has it the powers that be couldn’t decide when to unleash the dark apocalyptic tale on an American public weary from economic uncertainty and perpetual wars.

The big guns decided Thanksgiving weekend 2009 would be the perfect release date.

So, if you’re still stuffed with food and gratitude after last week, drop by the local cineplex and take in this bleak stunner; it will take the shine off your holiday weekend.

The Road is the tale of a father’s determined journey to survive an unnamed catastrophe long enough to deliver his son to safety while dodging miscreant cannibals and fending off starvation in the decimated landscape. Have a nice day!

The Road is a tough proposition all around. Figuring out a release date was probably easier than putting together a marketing plan. How do you convince folks to shell out hard-earned dollars to witness the end of civilization? To exacerbate the situation, this isn’t cartoony crap like 2012; this is the real deal and you’ll leave the theater pondering things you don’t want to.

We don’t like to think about it, but our existence is tenuous. Political stability is little more than a socially prudent illusion that could implode quite easily. The planet gets smaller and smaller as six billion (and

counting) humans vie for basic resources like food and water. And the Earth is just a transient speck in a solar system among countless other solar systems in an ever-expanding universe. Do you see why we don’t like to think about it?

The Road is a good, if challenging, film.

The relationship between the man (Viggo Mortensen) and his son (Kodi SmitMcPhee) is central to the narrative. As the fabric of society falls apart, a more elemental drive takes over. This isn’t just about getting the kid to a safe place; this is about the survival of the species. The boy watches as his father loses his humanity. Morality and civility become situational and even detrimental.

This is heady stuff. This is why I like The Road. It is unwavering in its aims. It does not let the viewer off easily. It stays with you long after you leave the theater.

Mortensen is terrific as the unnamed man trying to protect his preadolescent progeny.

He is an actor that conveys a page of inner dialogue with little more than his eyes. The subtlety of his desperation is devastating.

Robert Duval reminds us why he should always be counted a cinematic treasure. He owns the screen in the small but pivotal role of the old man.

Michael K. Williams, best known for his portrayal of Queer Robin Hood Omar Little in HBO’s The Wire, turns in an excellent performance as the thief.

Unfortunately, Smit-McPhee’s performance doesn’t measure up to these heavyweights. The youngster gets lost under the power of the veterans. He struggles to find a way to portray his connection to his father and to make us believe he’s a little horrified by what he witnesses. On one hand, he is a young actor working against an accent (Kodi is Australian) and a complex character in an impossible setting. On the other hand, young actors have triumphed in similar roles (think of Anna Paquin in The Piano).

The opening act, Amanda Blank, had good energy onstage, but really wasn’t enough to get us ready for Peaches. Despite her soulful vocal presence, it just didn’t seem fitting for the genre of glam electroclash sex-rap.

Coming onstage wearing a cloak and quickly revealing little underneath, Blank was backed by two DJs and a drummer.

Peaches didn’t just rock the Showbox; she fucked it, smoked a cigarette and didn’t stay for breakfast. If you were there then you know – if not, don’t miss her next time.

continued from cover ficulties in October. Morrissey, now 50, has had a very eventful year. Prior to the Seattle kickoff of a short West Coast tour, it was reasonable to wonder if Morrissey would be at his best – and if his core fans would still love him as they used to. Judging from the nearly sold-out Paramount Theatre, the decidedly harmless cult of Morrissey is still alive and kicking, as is the man himself.

Although he’s got superb taste in preshow film clips (this show’s warm-up video featured a hilarious interview with a young Lou Reed aimed at his sexual proclivities), sometimes Morrissey’s picks for tour support are a little on the weak side. After all, the real star of the show is Morrissey. But in opener Doll & The Kicks, Morrissey gave some prime exposure to a promising female-fronted band. Mix a little of Karen O’s style with big vocals a la The Gossip or Siouxsie Sioux, and you might have an approximation of the sound. They were feisty, and feisty is good.

And then came Morrissey and his handsome band, neatly dressed in matching black T-shirts and dark jeans against an arresting backdrop of Italian actor Walter Chiari. Blasting off appropriately with “This Charming Man,” I felt the doubters in the audience sigh with relief. No, he didn’t postpone the date or cancel the US tour after his recent collapse, and yes, he sounded like he was in top form. The set choices were noticeably less symphonic and more on the

raucous side than in recent years. Newer songs “Black Cloud” and “When Last I Spoke to Carol” tied in seamlessly with older tunes. The mood was energetic, a palpable reminder of the tours following Your Arsenal. “Is It Really So Strange?” was the moment I remembered how outstanding the man can be live.

Having said that, Morrissey’s tours in the ‘00s have been notoriously uneven. “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris” was the first dull spot of the evening, but was followed with upbeat Smiths classic “Ask.” Gesturing dramatically, stopping to rap his fingers on an amp, flicking the microphone cord – the flip presentation was thankfully still intact. And so were the anti-meat sentiments. Morrissey received some cheers as well as light booing to querying whether anyone had “done the unthinkable” over Thanksgiving.

Live favorite “Irish Blood, English Heart” was a perfectly timed declaration of his right to be himself without apology. “One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell” and “Because of My Poor Education” were well received, but a blistering version of “Death At One’s Elbow” was a definite highlight. Next Moz settled back for a disinterested rehashing of “Cemetry Gates” and “The World is Full of Crashing Bores,” then back to enthusiasm again with “Why Don’t You Find Out For Yourself?” (“Don’t rake up my mistakes, I know exactly what they are.…”) and a fiery reworking of “How Soon Is Now?” and “The Loop.”

Recognizing the importance of a really strong backing band has always been the ace up Morrissey’s sleeve. Longtime band members Boz Boorer, Jesse Tobias, Matt Walker, Solomon Walker, and new keyboardist Gustav Manzur were the backbone driving the show. Morrissey introduced all with clear admiration prior to closer “I’m OK By Myself.” A one-song encore of “Something Is Squeezing My Skull” ended the evening on a high.

Removing his shirt just before the end, Morrissey quickly and gracefully bid Seattle farewell. Although his shows in the past have been a bit uneven, Morrissey’s career is on some very solid ground at the moment.

He has certainly earned the right to do whatever he pleases and in characteristic fashion, Morrissey most definitely always will.

Chick Corea’s legendary trio to play Jazz Alley

Joyce Glasgow SGN A&E Writer Chick Corea December 10-12 Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley The legendary trio of jazz luminaries, Chick Corea (piano/composer), Stanley Clarke (bass/composer) and Lenny White (drums), will be performing for three nights next week in a highly anticipated series of club dates at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley.

Fans of the “Return to Forever” band of the 1970s, which combined jazz with rock, taking jazz into what at that time was the whole new direction of “fusion,” will recognize this famous triad of musicians. All three have gone on to successful solo careers and have now come back together to do a historic, extensive, and acclaimed world tour, including festivals and venues both large and small. Seattleites will have the luxury of enjoying this dynamic trio in the intimate atmosphere of the Jazz Alley. Their music is lyrical, exciting and highly memorable, and their musicianship, camaraderie and refined level of

playing together as musical colleagues is not to be missed.

Chick Corea is the recipient of 15 Grammy Awards, and has been nominated 51 times.

His popular and distinctive compositions have become part of the standard repertoire for jazz musicians. Ledisi Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley December 17-20 Grammy-nominated R&B artist Ledisi makes a sweet return to Seattle, taking up a four-night residence at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley in mid-December. Her previous visit was a one-night-only appearance at Benaroya Hall a few months ago. Celebrating the success of her sophomore album Turn Me Loose, the Oakland native is expanding her fan base by way of knockout live performances – from blues to gospel to traditional soul, this girl can sing it. The acclaimed singer-songwriter has been a stage act since the age of 8, even fronting the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra. Ledisi will perform Hubbard.

In January 2010, Chick Corea will receive the highest honor bestowed by Chamber Music America at the organization’s annual National Conference in New York. The Richard J. Bogomolny Award is given each year to an individual who has had a great impact on the field of chamber music over a significant period of time. Previous recipients have included Rudolph Serkin, Alice Tully and Elliott Carter.

Cake Paramount Theatre December 31 Cake is just the kind of band you want to play at a New Year’s Eve party, and Seattle fans lucked out as the Emerald City was selected by the Sacramento quintet to host their annual year-end shindig. Yes, these are the guys who funked up Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” the same dudes who gave us “The Distance.” Cakesters, as I believe they’re called, travel from across the country to the group’s NYE show, so if you come across a flock of wasted kids in the vicinity of the Paramount Theatre at the stroke of midnight, bingo! A new album is being worked on, but in the meantime you can listen to a number of Cake’s past songs on a long list of film soundtracks, including I Love You, Man and Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Muppets (c.1979), The Year Without a Santa Claus (c.1974), The Star Wars Holiday Special (c.1978 – yes, Virginia, there really was one!) and The Partridge Family (c.1971), all with reenactments. The tambourine playing “Tracy” (Jeff Erickson) completely stole the scene!

The chorus themselves do a wonderful job, as usual. There is the nod towards Chanukah with “Ma’oz Tzur” and later, an audience sing-along. A salute to Michael Jackson is included with “Thriller Christmas,” but the most impressive was “Silent Night.”

The song’s simplistic beauty speaks for itself, but when Kevin Gallagher adds the ASL interpretation, it becomes something majestic. All the musical arrangements, mostly done by David Maddux, are orchestrated well, but like with any choral presen-

tation – and despite the incredible acoustics of Benaroya Hall – the lyrics can sometimes be hard to understand with a conglomeration of 200 voices, no matter how well presented.

As special guest star, Betty Buckley made appearances in both acts. She performed several traditional Christmas carols as well as a lesser-known song written by Joni Mitchell. Ms. Buckley knows her vocal instrument and as she sang, she subtly adjusted the handheld microphone for optimum presentation of her voice. She delivered what could only be described as a purely professional performance, defaulting to her hosting chorus when not singing and only complimenting their work. The powerful clarity of her voice was especially emphasized when singing with only the piano backup of her 20-year accompanist, Kenny Werner. Nothing accentuates this more than the haunting rendition of “Memory,” only one reason for Betty Buckley’s many accolades. The song’s melancholy softness carried the lyrics to every corner of the music hall. Betty Buckley’s graceful vocal range demonstrated why this song has become her signature. Despite the many versions the years have presented – with equally numbered presenters – there is nothing like hearing the original persona performing this masterpiece.

The Seattle Men’s Chorus is celebrating their 30th anniversary. They have produced many CD recordings of their music and have become a staple for delivering holiday celebrations in the Seattle area. While Ms. Buckley will only be performing with the chorus on the first two days, there will be several concerts, including December 3 at the Pantages Theater in Tacoma and on December 5 at the Everett Civic Auditorium.

Musica ad Rhenum

Early Music Guild celebrates Couperin and Telemann

The full group included baroque flute (“traverso”), harpsichord, cello, viola da gamba, and violin, in a program of Georg Philipp Telemann and Francois Couperin.

The traverso was wooden; the single manual harpsichord was provided by David Calhoun; the cello was held between the knees (no foot); the da gamba had seven strings (as opposed to the cello’s four, thicker strings), and the violin was played with a baroque bow (arched).

The full ensemble opened with Telemann’s Concerto in D major from Quadri.

be a wrenching emotional experience of incredible beauty. Vladimir Jurowski’s performance here a couple years ago with the Russian National Orchestra was so powerful that it literally changed how I listen to music. The memory of that evening nourishes my spirit to this day.

Arild Remmereit is a Norwegian conductor to whom I gave very favorable marks when he appeared a couple years ago with the Seattle Symphony for a two-week stay.

For his return last week to conduct Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece, I hoped for something fine. I knew this work had to be an excellent chance to glimpse the conductor’s soul.

I find it hard to express how much I hated what we heard last Saturday night! From the opening notes of Seth Krimsky’s bassoon, it was clear something was very wrong. These very low, soft sounds, over the equally low, hushed strings should seem like they arise like a mist from a dark, murky “slough of despond.” Instead, this opening had no weight whatsoever because it was way too fast.

Indeed, Remmereit castrated the whole symphony, playing it with the emotional equivalent of the “1812 Overture.” His caf-

ner voices we may have never before noticed made the outer movements strangely full of craggy emphasis. I’m sure the players did what Remmereit asked for; his technical mastery was never in doubt.

Montero gave a concert a year ago at Meany Hall that was nothing but improvisations … not a single composition all evening. And it was not just fascinating, but also musically rewarding. So, it came as no surprise when she gave us an encore that released her apparently irrepressible urge to improvise. As at Meany, she asked anyone to sing a wellknown melody to her, which she promised to embroider.

A woman sang out with, I believe, the “Waltz of the Flowers” from The Nutcracker.

Montero did not disappoint, as evidenced from the standing ovation that followed.

The program began with complete novelty: perhaps the first American appearance of Partita Sinfonica, “The Drover”’ by Norwegian composer Ludvig Irgens-Jensen (1894-1969). It failed to hold my interest, except for a lovely chorale-like last movement.

In a year when all guest conductors are being examined (if available) as possible successors to Gerard Schwarz as music director of the Seattle Symphony, I shudder to think that Arild Remmereit might be given serious consideration. He is tall, outgoing, and even charismatic, with beautiful, long blonde hair that is in constant motion as he dances on the podium. But I seriously doubt his ability to probe the depths of emotional content in music. file photo

Remmereit – “something very wrong” at Symphony

one woman were all attractive and communicated a joy in the music. Though many moments required virtuosic playing, there was never a sense of strain.

Michael Borgstede followed on the solo harpsichord with five selections from Couperin’s Vingt-Cinquiéme Ordre from Quatriéme Livre de pieces de Clavecin. Completely free of mannerisms, he played with complete ease and musical ideas that were clearly and warmly expressed. Elaborate ornamentations never got in the way of expressing the musical line. The harpsichord was built from a kit some 30 years ago in Roseburg, Oregon. When the builder passed away, Mr. Calhoun finished the project and later purchased and refurbished the instrument.

In the Telemann “3iéme Quatour (G major)” from Nouveaux Quatours en six suites, all five players returned to the stage. In this and the opening piece, I first thought the remarkable playing of gambist Cassandra Luckhardt outshone the cello of Job ter Haar. As the playful melodies jumped from player to player, it became clear that the cello playing matched her easily, and then some. Melodies were often echoed back and forth between instruments. Quite fun.

A duo of gamba and cello followed intermission, playing Couperin’s Le Parnasse ou l’Apothéose de Corelli (1724). So charming and graceful was the playing of this very French work that it nudged my own estimation of Couperin’s appeal up quite a notch. Couperin’s “12iéme Concert” from Les Gouts-Rénuis” (1724) followed with the larger ensemble. And Telemann’s “Suite in b minor” from Nouveaux Quatours en six suites brought the program to a rousing finish.

For an encore, Musica ad Rhenum jumped into a much more overtly passionate realm with the “Chaconne” from the Telemann Paris Quartet, No. 6 in e minor. Because it was my favorite work of the night, I’m especially looking forward to the complete Quartet when the Portland Baroque plays it in its April 17 appearance at Town Hall for the Early Music Guild.

feinated approach was all energy and bombast, playing to the lowest common denominator in the audience. There was no pathos, no struggle against despair, no soul whatsoever. It was all too loud and fast, lacking any repose or real drama.

Despite a big response from the audience, I lost all respect for this man’s musical sense.

The Mozart “Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major” that preceded the Tchaikovsky was less revealing. It was faster than most performances, and soloist Gabriela Montero tried at first to slow it down. Her contribution throughout was lovely, including her improvised cadenzas. Passion Pit, Michael Buble, Norah Jones, and Lambert

It’s that time of year, again! Time to announce the best music of the past 12 months, and I’ve enlisted the help of electro-pop band Passion Pit to assist with the festivities.

The Cambridge-based quintet is scheduled to perform December 9 at the Moore Theatre (www.stgpresents.org), but they have a date with me before going onstage, during which they’ll offer their personal picks for 2009’s best tunes and their plans for the upcoming holidays. This, of course, leads me to announce that the Best of Music 2009 – our selection of the year’s top albums, singles, and concerts, plus the worst of it – is set for unveiling on December 18. Did our choices match up with your favorites? Find out two weeks from now, along with an interview with special guests Passion Pit. Jazz hottie Michael Buble has announced a Seattle concert date: April 3, at a venue to be determined. The Grammy winner put out a new album in October entitled Crazy Love, featuring a mix of classic songs and original material, and also a collaboration with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Buble is said to be an incredible live performer, known for going out into the audience and

giving hugs to random concertgoers – he’s even had his ass grabbed by several women, and a guy (if I came within arm’s reach, I’d spank him – seriously!). Ticket information was unavailable at press time, but stay glued for updates here in The Music Lounge.

Norah Jones is also returning to Seattle, scheduled to perform at the Paramount Theatre on April 18. The multiple Grammy winner embarks on a three-month tour in early March to promote her just-released album, The Fall, which includes the clunky and charming leadoff single “Chasing Pirates.”

It’s been ages, it seems, since Jones paid a visit to her fans in the Emerald City, the last being either at McCaw Hall or Key Arena several years ago, though she also gave a special performance for Amazon.com stockholders a while back as well. Ticket prices and on-sale date weren’t available at press time, so log onto the artist’s official website for updated information on her forthcoming road outing.

The Kinsey Sicks

The singer’s amazing voice and skillful instrumentals took the evening away. His trio of Bill Rich on bass and Richard Smith on drums clearly also enjoy the mastery of their music and working together. They opened with a rocking blues song, “Honey, Where You Going to Go?” Taj showed his big spirit on the song “Oh

Baby,” which he said was the first guitar song he learned. Mercy was reminded of the true meaning of the term “contagious smile,” because she caught it from Taj. So did the bass player and drummer. Other audience members sighed audibly at the luscious guitar introduction he played to “You Should Be Down.”

“Annie Mae” had a funky bass solo. Mahal’s strong fingers on the keyboard made “Linda Lou” captivating. As he said, “Once you get the tempo right, the whole thing just flows.” Taj pointed to the drummer with a look of confidence that was justified by

Elton John and Billy Joel have rescheduled their previously postponed Seattle concert dates to February 3 and 6, 2010.

The pair was forced to cancel their appearances last month due to a bad case of E. coli suffered by Sir Elton. Tickets purchased for the original November shows will be honored for the new dates, taking place at Key Arena.

next year’s Super Bowl, and while I don’t argue the greatness of this rock legend, I do wish a more current act would be given the honors – or did Janet Jackson ruin it for everybody with her boob of a performance?

Finally, congrats to all of this year’s Grammy nominees announced on Wednesday, some of who received e-mails or phone calls from me via their respected publicists and management. Look for a preview of “music’s biggest night” in late January with picks and predictions here in The Music Lounge.

“Honey Bee” was a sweet number. Mahal introduced “Creole Bill,” saying it was dedicated to a waitress whose favorite it was.

The combination of voice and guitar on that song was delicious. Another person sitting close to Mercy and Cuteness whooped at the first few bars of “Sweet Edie,” and they had to agree.

Taj’s light touch on the strings for “Fishin’ Blues” had Mercy breathless. His voice on “Good Morning Miss Brown” knocked Mercy out, as did the hot banjo licks on “Corn Beer.” Mahal had the audience singing along with “uh-huh” on a song which started with an elegant guitar hook and had great bass and drum solos. “Loving in My Baby’s Eyes” was a strong finish.

When he came back for an encore, Taj talked about the fact that he had to grow and change over the 40 years he has been playing, otherwise he’d still be singing ‘50s rock and roll in the same way he learned it then (which he did a charming imitation of).

He recognizes that old songs make people happy, too. So he finished with “Mama Now You Know I Can’t.” Mercy and Cuteness were impressed with how well the musician combined new and old music.

Seattle Men’s Chorus Mercy and Cuteness were happy to hear Betty Buckley sing with the Seattle Men’s Chorus (SMC). Her voice was understandably aged, but still resonant. Mercy and Cuteness were surprised that most of Betty’s songs were Christmas songs, because they had expected more show tunes. Mercy assumed the choice of music had been SMC director Dennis Coleman’s, but Mercy’s friend Justice, whose husband is a long time chorus boy, says no, Cuteness was right that Buckley chose the numbers herself. Mercy and Cuteness liked “I Wish I Had a River” (Joni Mitchell) and, of course, “Memories” better than the generous number of carols Ms. Buckley sang.

Justice’s “significant otter,” Loyalty, passed along the comment that, with 300 Gay men on the risers, someone should have fixed the soloist’s hair. He did say Betty enjoyed singing with the men. Other high points were “Heavy Christmas,” carols set to classics, “Ebenezer the Miser,” shopping center Santa Clauses singing “Downtown (Little Shop of Horrors).” Mercy and Cuteness particularly enjoyed “Bolly Holly Christmas” including the dancing of Rhythms of India. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans Mercy and Cuteness had some differences of opinion that arose after watching Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.

Mercy liked Nicolas Cage’s acting in the remake and his chemistry with Eva Mendes.

Cuteness thinks there is no comparison between Cage’s abilities and Harvey Keitel’s, who starred in the original. She also thinks Eva Mendes is too hot for Cage.

They both liked the acting of Tom Bower and Jennifer Coolidge as the lieutenant’s mother and stepfather and the subplot about the father getting sober. Mercy and Cuteness also liked the atmosphere of post-Katrina New Orleans as a setting, especially since they had just been there. Mercy tastefully whispered, “We were there,” during a scene filmed at the aquarium. Cuteness pointed out very few in the film had a New Orleans accent, which stood out since she and Mercy had just seen the Book-It production of Confederacy of Dunces, which shone on this point and other elements of local color.

Chad Goller-Sojourner is a Seattle based solo performer and recipient of a distinguished 2008 Artist Trust/Washington State Arts Commission Performing Arts Fellowship. His work explores how the narrow categories we assign ourselves and others inevitably fail to represent our whole selves. In July 2008, his highly anticipated solo show, “Sitting in Circles with Rich White Girls: Memoirs of a Bulimic Black Boy,” debuted at Seattle’s Brownbox African-American Theatre.
