His younger brother Josh (Josh Gad) is a multi-millionaire with a sexy wife thanks to his internet startup company, while his doctor parents James (George Segal) and Nancy (Jill Clayburgh)

& Other Drugs

and his M.D. sister Helen (Natalie Gold) can’t fathom why he dropped out of medical school. He’s aimless and searching, using his cocksure personality to get by while looking for a plum opportunity, knowing that when it comes along he’ll have the good sense to grab it.

Soon, Jamie is working in the upstart industry of pharmaceutical sales. Partnered with seasoned salesman Bruce Winston (Oliver Platt), the charming young man

soon ingratiates himself with physicians all across town, including Dr. Stan Knight (Hank Azaria), a professional womanizer who’s more well-meaning and good at his chosen profession than he would care to admit.

It’s through him that Mark meets Maggie Murdock (Anne Hathaway), a sexy and vivacious free spirit who hides a painful secret. She doesn’t want people (mainly men) to get close to her, but for whatever reason, she allows the salesman to breach her defenses. But what starts out as sex quickly transforms into friendship, a friendship that even more suddenly blossoms into love. Now Mark must face Maggie’s illness head-on while she must decide whether or not she wants to allow him to. The pair has to come to grips with the fact that a life together might be more trying than either of them is prepared to endure.

Love & Other Drugs is not an easy film to encapsulate. It defies genre categorization, jumping from romantic comedy to pure drama willy-nilly. It has tons on its mind, but isn’t always sure of the best way to flesh those ideas out. It is a convoluted picture – sometimes pointlessly so – but it is also quite marvelous and emotionally intoxicating at the same time. Director and co-writer Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond, Glory) crafts with an elegant beauty I thoroughly enjoyed.

Loosely based on Jamie Reidy’s nonfiction Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman, the movie is the most unusual blend of comedy, romance, and drama since Zwick’s thirtysomething left the airwaves in 1991. It jumps genres, continually keeping me on my toes and forcing me to remain focused on Jamie and Maggie. It is refreshingly frank, reveling in its innate sexuality while at the same time keeping things honest and real. While the world it exists in is very much a 1990s-era construct, the things it is talking about are timeless, and while the central love affair has roadblocks somewhat difficult to comprehend, the relationship truths it speaks to are universal.

Sometimes the film’s sudden shifts in tone can be annoying, as thing jump from slap-

stick to medical melodrama at the drop of a hat. Additionally, the insertion of Josh as a part of Jamie’s emotional maturation early on (he’s having marital troubles and decides to sleep on big brother’s couch) quickly annoys, as his character is a pointless one whose mannerisms and tics drove me nuts.

I also found the final sequences to be a bit hackneyed and overblown – the only thing separating it from being a total Cameron Crowe cliché was someone uttering “You complete me” or “You had me at hello.”

And yet, Love & Other Drugs is so wellacted, so bracingly honest in its depiction of early onset Parkinson’s Disease, so refreshingly frank when it comes to its characters foibles and insecurities, I almost couldn’t help but slowly come to adore it. Zwick keeps things grounded and never lets events fly too far off the handle. Better, there are moments of cutting insight that had me flabbergasted – for example, a journey to a Parkinson’s support group meeting was so skillfully realized I couldn’t help but shed a few tears.

Then there is Hathaway. She is every bit as extraordinary as Maggie as she ever was as Kym in Rachel’s Getting Married. She throws herself into this thing body and soul, and yet her performance never seems forced or false. Every beat she hits – no matter how schmaltzy or tawdry it might appear on paper – ends up feeling genuine. I was with her from the first moment she came upon the screen, and Hathaway again proves she is one of the most gifted and talented actresses of her generation.

The movie isn’t perfect. Zwick relies a bit too strongly on his pop and rock soundtrack to get him from points A to B to C, and some of the switches in tone don’t transition as well as I’d have liked them to. But I believed in Jamie and Maggie’s relationship and wanted to see them make it out of the wilderness intact. Love & Other Drugs is a refreshingly adult love story full of pitfalls and hiccups that kept me watching no matter which direction it decided to go in. It worked for me, and by the time it was over the happiness I was feeling was something no psychotropic prescription could ever hope to duplicate.

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN Contributing Writer HAIR Paramount Theatre Through December 4 Last night at the Paramount Theatre, a movement was reborn. A thought-provoking show described as disturbing, beautiful, wild, irreverent, and (to some perhaps) vulgar took over the stage and presented something truly exuberant: the musical HAIR. This national tour of the 2009 Broadway smash revival (many cast members come directly) is not one to be missed. This cast is full of a contagious energy that is literally brought down from the stage and scattered among the audience.

The story takes place in the late 1960s in a torn nation divided between generations and opinions of the current war. The lead characters are introduced: best friends Berger and Claude, and their girlfriend Sheila. But the main character is the amorphous, amorous, and highly talented group of hippies and flower children called The Tribe. At the center of the rebellious surroundings is Claude’s inner struggle when he receives his draft notice. What results is an incredible journey that takes the audience on a two and a half-hour trip, allowing us to experience protests, be-ins, drug taking, and most of all a consistent political outcry for change, and a musical outpouring of love.

Steel Burkhardt’s energy is perfect for the untamed character of Berger, the sort of unofficial leader of The Tribe. His voice is strong and clear while exuding a chaotic, continuous energy, making his character the epitome of charm and exemplifying the innocence of the flower child persona. His body moves with a combination of sensual grace and childlike chaos that captures the audience, and we can’t help but immediately fall under his spell. Paris Remillard (Claude) does a great job of showing the in-

ner struggles of the character. There is no better place for him to express the character’s feelings than in the musical soliloquy of “Where Do I Go,” and Remillard does not disappoint. Every word sinks in as his robust vocals show the inner turmoil between his dedication to duty and his moral conscience. Caren Lyn Tackett (Sheila) is the NYU protestor caught between the two men. She loves Berger, Claude loves her, and Claude and Berger are very close. When she sings “Easy to Be Hard” (just one of the four top-10 hits HAIR originally produced), both her longing and vocals easily sink into the ears of the audience.

The music is a major part of this political protest. From the opening invocation of “Aquarius” to the jubilant lamentations of “Let The Sunshine In,” Galt MacDermot’s compositions are as much a contributing entity as anyone on the stage. Most of The Tribe is given a solo at one point or another, and they all excel. Phyre Hawkins’ haunting call to worship in “Aquarius” is a gospel of the New Age. Soprano Kaitlin Kiyan’s harmonies in “Hare Krishna” are what send that song into the rafters. It is safe to say the soloists of this show, when given their chance, succeed without fail. The names among this cast will be the names of future headliners. When the cast sings as one, their voices unite, presenting an intimate musical force of joy that makes its point with a sledgehammer’s subtlety.

Gerome Ragni and James Rado, two “socially conscious actor-writers” collaborated on and co-starred in the original 1968 production. Wanting to accurately represent the times, the two wrote the script (and sometimes the lyrics) as the events happened concurrently around them. In many of the songs, they shrewdly used lyrics quoted from works of Shakespeare to evoke certain images and moods. Ragni and Rado managed to create a musically staged protest

The Paramount Theatre’s production of HAIR does what it is supposed to do: it lets the sunshine in.

Celebrating 37 Years!

A perfect case of Sherlock Scrooge as a dream or a hallucination brought on by drugs. He finally deduces that he might actually have seen a ghost. It’s an amusing process to watch Holmes reluctantly accept that he’s getting ghostly visitation.

Another pleasure is Terry Edward Moore’s performance of Holmes. One of Seattle’s most dependable talents, Moore was actually the actor Longenbaugh had in mind to play the role as he wrote the script. Moore can convey all the supercilious hauteur that Holmes has, and also the cracks into his humanity as Holmes realizes he must change his ways, and the humility to make that transformation feel complete.

Director Scott Nolte selected an eager support cast, which plunges into the spirit of the enterprise by playing multiple roles with gusto. They include Stephen Grenley, most notably as Dr. Watson, genial and good-hearted; Pam Nolte as the offended but kindly landlady; and David Dorrian, Alex Robertson, Aaron Lamb, Jesse Notehelfer, and Eric Riedmann.

A rigorous sound design by Mark Lund brings the sounds of turn-of-the-century London to life, and lighting by Jody Briggs supports the spooky haunting. The set design, usually excellent, this time created Holmes’ celebrated Baker Street offices, but left the major portion of stage empty.

Holmes is left to look quizzically at nothing when ghostly relocations occur. It left a feeling of wanting something more.

All in all, an admirable blend of books that surprises in its feeling of complete “rightness.” Kudos to Longenbaugh for a tightly written script that hews closely to both authors’ intentions. For more information, go to www.taproottheatre.org or call 206-781-9707.

Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Christmas Carol Taproot Theatre Company Through December 30 It turns out that Sherlock Holmes and A Christmas Carol go together like peanut butter and chocolate, or milk and cookies.

It’s such a natural pairing that it’s a wonder that no one else has written it before! Yet, here we are in 2010, and the first guy to do it is local playwright John Longenbaugh.

Taproot Theatre was going to have this world-premiere last season, but the unfortunate arson of their storefront building made that impossible, so they rescheduled for this season. No matter. It’s the right time of year for the piece. Of course, you know the story.

Conan Doyle’s Holmes is crotchety and is visited on Christmas Eve by ghosts who show him just how awful he is and why he should change his ways (just like Dickens’ Scrooge).

At first, perhaps Sherlock Holmes is a strange choice to substitute for Ebenezer Scrooge. He’s all deduction and logic, of course, though his character definitely could fit the Scrooge model. Holmes was never very nice. He always led with his head and never his heart. Longenbaugh has concocted an explanation for Holmes being even more crotchety than usual by having him return from dispatching his mortal enemy, Professor Moriarty, and becoming a recluse who doesn’t even want to solve crimes any more.

He’s more interested in chemical experiments.

Holmes is in danger of losing even his best friend, Dr. Watson. What kind of future is before him? others might actually also please his own heart. After this triumphant discovery, Red notices a bicycle was delivered, though in an unexpected way.

Jerick Hoffer is a tour de force as 9-yearold Red Ranger – even at six feet tall! He’s the sour-faced, tart-tongued little boy who sings and dances his way through this moment of discovery. Hoffer gets marvelous material to sing, too, with original music penned by Edd Key and Myra Platt. The songs are tuneful and tart, like the story.

Hoffer even gets to tantrum amusingly through one of the songs.

Wesley Rice plays the author/narrator, and though the identity of Saunder Clos is not in the program – I guess to preserve Santa’s existence for the littler ones – Rice is also the decrepit old man. He’s also a very funny man with a talent for making himself look very, very old.

Aunt Vy is the heart of the play, and Theresa Holmes warms the stage with her beautiful singing voice and loving suffering as Red does his best to make life difficult. A strong chorus of four Vashon residents is joined by some talented children who are singing, dancing toys – and even the musicians get into the singing and dancing.

Curtis Taylor designed a storybook style set that works well on the small stage. Jessica Trundy adds playful lighting and K.D. Schill costumes everyone in period-appropriate attire. Choreography by Ryan Barret is festive and well-done. Musicians are pulled together by master musician, Key, and Platt directs with just the right touch of whimsy. If you haven’t seen the production before, do yourself a favor this time around.

Red Ranger Came Calling: A Guaranteed True Christmas Story Book-It Repertory Through December 23 A sweet-and-sour musical journey appears for all of us to enjoy as Book-It Repertory reprises Red Ranger Came Calling: A Guaranteed True Christmas Story. Berkeley Breathed is primarily known as the cartoonist who brought us Bloom County and the Outland strips, vaguely subversive commentary on popular culture. But he also has written several children’s books in recent years. His 1994 book was adapted by Myra Platt for Book-It’s 2003 season, and again in 2004. Book-It has brought it back for this season, and it’s clear why audiences of all ages delight in seeing it again.

The story is based on a true story of Berkeley’s father, who at age 9 was so enamored of the radio hero Red Ranger that he insisted he be referred to as “Red Ranger of Mars.” The 9-year-old was also shipped regularly across the country by train to his Aunt Vy on Vashon Island for the holidays.

The story finds this headstrong young boy not very happy about having to make this trip to a boring place where little happens.

But this year, Red hears about a local resident Saunder Clos – who bears a striking resemblance to a retired Santa Claus – and decides to visit him and see for himself. Red’s skepticism is overcome by a series of remarkable moments and he tentatively decides he might possibly believe in Santa again, and hopes for the gift of a hero’s bicycle. Greta Matassa and friends launch Christmas in a jazzy way

by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer Greta Matassa Mercy and Cuteness very much enjoyed Greta Matassa’s CD release party at the Triple Door on November 29. The crowd was sparse, but enthusiastic. The album, And to All a Good Night, has fine music on it.

The evening started with Jenny Lind and six members of her family harmonizing beautifully on “The Bell That Couldn’t Ring.” Cuteness appreciated Lind’s silver shiny high heels. The band was tight. Darren Clevendin’s piano was hot, Clifford Anderson’s bass was knowing, Mark Iveston’s drums were right on, and Susan Pascal’s vibes were cool.

Greta then sang a song Blossom Dearie made famous, “Christmas Love Song.” Her voice was delicious. “It’s Christmas” featured piano and vibes.

Clifford Anderson, the bass player, is also the producer of the CD. He also sang solo on “The First Snow Fall” with just his lovely voice. Allie and Grace, Mark Iveson’s cute daughters with sweet voices, joined Matassa for “When Can I Find Christmas.” The girls did a duet of “Santa Baby” that was fun.

Then they left, and Greta soloed nicely on “Christmas Day” featuring Anderson on bass and Clevindin on piano. Clifford sang “Count My Blessings.” When Jenny Lind

came out again, Matassa said the two of them had worked quite a bit doing ad work.

The strangest one they ever did was one for Ernst, where they had to sing while eating popcorn, Lind’s strong voice rang out in “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas.” Matassa did a fine duet of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” with Anderson. Clifford started to imitate Louis Armstrong, so Greta did Ella Fitzgerald. Matassa said, “Even though we are a jazz band, we are going to do a medley of Carpenter’s songs.” She had a fresh take on “It’s Christmas Time” and “Sleep Well, Little Children.”

Clifford and Greta did a duet of “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm.” The piano solo that went with that was so beautiful, an audience member said, “Yeah!” Mercy agreed.

Matassa continued with the theme from the animated movie The Snowman, “Walking on Air.” “Bravo!” a woman called out.

Mercy also agreed with her. A Johnny Mathis ballad followed, “Christmas Time Again.”

Clifford Sang “November in the Snow,” with a fantastic piano solo. Greta sang two Henry Mancini songs, “Every Christmas Eve” and “Giving.” Jenny Lind came to the stage again for “Christmas Time is Here.”

Eminem triumphs over GaGa, Antebellum with 10 Grammy nods

Rap superstar Eminem beat out two Ladys in earning the most Grammy nominations, announced Wednesday night on a live telecast. The Detroit rapper, who put out his most serious work this past year, received 10 nods total, including one for Album of the Year for his newest recording, Recovery.

Not far behind were a pair of equally successful acts of 2010, Lady GaGa and Lady Antebellum, collecting six nominations apiece and each vying for Album of the Year with Eminem for The Fame Monster and Need You Now, respectively.

The shocker is GaGa’s “Bad Romance” not making the cut for Record of the Year – a huge snub, considering it was one of the biggest-selling singles of the past 12 months and has a universally loved music video (though, it does compete for Best Short Form Music Video). ROTY nominees are Cee-Lo Green’s “F*** You,” Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now,” Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind,” Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie,” and “Nuthin’ on You” by B.o.B. and Bruno Mars.

Among the great surprises, Arcade Fire picked up an Album of the Year nomination for the band’s much-praised effort The Suburbs, folk artist Ray LaMontage deservedly nabbed a Song of the Year nod for “Beg Steal or Borrow” (I didn’t see that coming,

and am delighted), jazz up-and-comer Esperanza Spalding is included in the Best New Artist Field – along with Mumford & Sons, Florence + the Machine, Drake and teen brat Justin Bieber – while Vampire Weekend earned their first trip to the Grammys by squeezing into the always-tough Best Alternative Music Album category.

Miranda Lambert added to her banner year by receiving nominations for Song of the Year (“The House That Built Me”), Female Country Vocal Performance, Country Song, Country Album, and Country Collaboration. Katy Perry is a multiple nominee, scoring mentions for Album of the Year, Female Vocal Performance, Pop Collaboration with Vocals (with Snoop Dogg for “California Gurls”) and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Of Gay interest, pop icon Elton John got a lone nomination for “If It Wasn’t for Bad” with Leon Russell, out and proud Adam Lambert got his first taste of Grammy gold with a mention for Pop Male Vocal, Lesbian newbie LaRoux is a double nominee in the Dance/Electronic field, two homo-adored comediennes (Kathy Griffin and Margaret Cho) will compete against each other for Best Comedy Album, and the cast of Glee is up for Best Pop Vocal by Duo or Group for their rendition of “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

Finally, Seattle-based acts Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains are each competing in the rock field. The Grammy Awards will be televised on February 13.

Celebrating 37 Years!

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Passion Pit November 29 Moore Theatre One could accuse Passion Pit of listening to an excess of K-Tel disco LPs growing up, but this appears to have planted the seed that led to their artistic contribution, which can be summarized in four words: party music for geeks.

The New Yorkbased unit, who interviewed with Seattle Gay News around this time last year, drew a near-sell-out crowd to the Moore Theatre on Tuesday night – mostly college kids, almost all white urbanites, and specifically those who embrace their nerdy side and look cool doing so.

Passion Pit opened the show with “I’ve Got Your Number,” lifting everyone out of their seats. Lead singer Michael Angelakos took command of the stage from the get-go, his tall and lean frame moving from end to end, his bushy hair becoming a floppier mess by the minute, and his hand clutching a white microphone.

Passion Pit brought the party to the Moore ter Things.” With two keyboardists, Ian Hultquist and Ayad Al Adhamy, playing on every song, Passion Pit’s sound is as much electronic as it is pop, and it’s heavily cushioned with elements of disco.

Clearly fans came to dance, and that they did when Passion Pit landed on “The Reeling.” Blue and green lights flickered during “Let Your Love Grow Tall,” a tune that was featured on an episode of Ugly Betty. “Live to Tell the Tale” was beautiful, and it showcased Angelakos on both keyboards and lead vocals.

A dynamite, exuberant rendition of “Little Secrets” got everybody moving, jumping several inches in the air, and chanting the words “higher, higher” from the chorus.

Passion Pit returned for a three-song encore, which included a kick-ass cover of “Dreams” by The Cranberries – come to think of it, it was better than the original (and I mean it). The quintet saved the best for last; not only is “Sleepyhead” their biggest hit, it was also the most amazing thing we heard all night. I loved how Angelakos sunk his high-pitched pipes deep into it; you have to appreciate this guy for truly singing, not just talking through the lyrics like every other band’s frontman does these days.

“Deck the Hall Ball” w/ Broken Bells, Jimmy Eat World, Cake, Sleigh Bells, The Black Keys, Temper Trap December 8 WaMu Theater The holiday season in Seattle wouldn’t be the same without the merry-go-round at Westlake Center (it spins too fast, in my opinion), or without Nordstrom’s massive photo shop encroaching their storefront sidewalk, or without those infectiously flavored beverages Starbucks elves seem to stir up (gingerbread latte? Yes please!). Another reminder of the giving season is the long list of cheery live entertainment, from The Nutcracker to Dina Martina to The End’s annual “Deck the Hall Ball,” which this year packs a mighty blow with six alternative music acts that separately would be worth seeing.

Among the bands taking part in the radio station’s bash on Wednesday are two kinds of bells – allow me to differentiate them for you. Broken Bells is the collaborative team of Danger Mouse and James Mercer (of The Shins, formerly based in Seattle), while Sleigh Bells is an established duo comprised of Derek E. Miller and Alexis Krauss. Both produce some form of electronic music, Broken Bells combing it through light rock

songs like “The High Road” and “The Ghost Inside,” Sleigh Bells pounding it onto punkheavy tracks like “Crown on the Ground” and “Tell ‘Em.” Their albums are two of the most critically acclaimed in 2010, Broken Bells’ self-titled release and Sleigh Bells’ Treats.

Now that we have our bells in order, the rest of the lineup includes The Black Keys, Jimmy Eat World, Cake, and Temper Trap.

Each of these groups can or has sold out venues as big as The Showbox SoDo, and thus uniting them – with the aforementioned acts – under one roof on the same night is a helluva stocking stuffer. The only drawback to a show with multiple performers is the crunched set times, reminding me of how disappointed I was last year when Phoenix was on and off the stage in less time than it took me to get to WaMu Theater. On the plus side, DTHB usually attracts the chill alternative crowd, the dot commers, the tattooed baristas, the wispy girls wearing skirts and boots, the hoodie-wearers, and all those city folk that wouldn’t otherwise escape into their introverted worlds; somehow they converge at events like this – a miniSasquatch without the long drive.

Doors open at 4 p.m. with the first band hitting the stage at 4:30 p.m. Light rail is the best transportation for getting to/from the venue; the Stadium station is what you want. And drinks are pricey at the venue, so you’ve been warned. For more details, visit www.1077theend.com.

Even Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” was rewritten for the show. While an impersonator (courtesy of Julia’s on Broadway) performed in front, the Chorus backed up by singing lyrics such as “banned from romance.” This song was meshed with Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” and while the Froot Loops and football team performed, the lyrics sung were about being able to “put a ring on it.”

The highlight of the concert was undoubtedly three-time Tony Award nominee Kelli O’Hara, who performed November 27 and 28 only. This woman not only looks like a vision, but sings like an angel. The first song she shared was “Wonderful Guy” from her recently nominated performance in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific. She followed it by singing the title song from Light in the Piazza; another nominated role and a show she originated here in Seattle, written

by Rodgers’ grandson, Adam Guettel.

It was in the second part of the show that Ms. O’Hara truly allowed her singing abilities to shine. Her rendition of “O Holy Night” was not only a pleasure to hear, but also something that will stay in the memory for quite a long while. Showing her vocal versatility, Ms. O’Hara’s final song was “They Don’t Let You in the Opera (If You’re a Country Star)”. Self-described as being (semi) autobiographical, the song charts the journey of a singer from the South who makes her way to Broadway. It is here that Ms. O’Hara proves she can sing not only softer classics, but can also be funny and belt out notes as good as any aria diva.

For those expecting the usual SMC humor, they won’t be disappointed. Several numbers are done with drag performers, song lyrics are rewritten to make political points, and, of course, “Silent Night” is performed in sign language with a blacklight highlighting white gloves. Raffle tickets offer both the chance to help support the SMC and possibly win an assortment of prizes including Alaska Airline tickets and a new Subaru. For a musical transition from Thanksgiving to the holiday season, the Seattle Men’s Chorus is the way to go.

The Southwestern tribute was “Las Posadas Navideñas,” a Hispanic retelling of Joseph and Mary’s journey to find an inn. The Las Vegas portion was lead by a three-personversion of the Rat Pack (Gerard Gravallese, Ron Douglas, Ryan Spady) singing “Winter Wonderland.” In the second act, Broadways’ “Turkey Lurkey Time” (from Promises, Promises) gave a flashback to the late 1960s.

For the fourth tribute, the SMC chose Branson, MO. With a parody of “Looking for a City,” the duet of Manny Golez and Jaime Walrod had a “diva-off” to see who could sing the song’s chorus in a higher octave.

Seasoning the concert were songs ranging from the Hebrew “Shehecheyanu” to the medieval carols of “Balulalow” and “There is No Rose of Such Virtue.” Cute songs were presented, such as “The Davey Dinckle Song,” a story about a boy who pees in the snow and thus saves Christmas (sorry, no spoilers on how or why). Captain Smartypants, an a cappella subgroup of the chorus, made several appearances. Their “Twelve Days of Christmas” was done with the perfectly blended harmonies that they have become known for, and combined it with a mesh of several other holiday songs making the result a new comical holiday classic.

As the concert’s title – Holiday Glee – suggests, the SMC presented a tribute to the show Glee. With a character called Sue Sylvester, cheerleaders The Froot Loops, and Kurt impersonators, the concert presented several songs that have appeared on the hit smash television show, currently in its second season. Giving it their usual SMC spin, lyrics have been changed to fit the current political issue of Gay marriage.

To say that Friday’s performance was an evening of enchantment would be the understatement of the year. A capacity crowd greeted the annual staging. Little girls and boys in their “I Study Ballet” best joined with proud parents bearing armloads of flowers for the post-opening celebration.

Hundreds of young children – many of them very young – fill the stage of the opera house. The production uses nearly 300 dancers of all ages in rotating casts during the month-long run. The entire adult company of PNB rotates in and out of major and supporting roles. Many of the company dancers have their own fan base, and many Nutcracker nuts return to the show time and time again each season.

On opening night, Carla Korbes danced the adult Clara, Batkhurel Bold was her dashing Prince, and Olivier Weavers was the doddering, perhaps dangerous Herr Drosselmeier. While the principal roles rotate among a series of company dancers, audiences are guaranteed an outstanding performance from each and every cast member.

The three leads on opening night reflect the growing cultural diversity of PNB – Korbes is a native of Brazil, Weavers is from Belgium, and Bold is from Mongolia. Each year, the 190 roles on stage at every performance reflect more and more cultural diversity – and so it is with the audience.

Every Nutcracker fan has his or her own favorite scene and favorite character. This reviewer continually delights in the elegance of the Peacock in Act Two. For the first time, after 20-plus visits, this scribe noticed a painted peacock above the double doorway in Clara’s home in Act One. It’s always been there – Sendak’s colorful set is just so full of imaginative touches that many remain overlooked year after year. On opening night, Ariana Lallone again danced the strutting Peacock. Lallone has announced her retirement at the end of this season, and it was fitting that she danced the opening this year – her last with the company. She will be missed, but like the full Nutcracker, the Peacock will continue for decades to come.

Other highlights for this writer include the Dance of the Snowflakes that ends Act One. Much of the first act is full of mime and children in elaborate formations – as mice, tin soldiers, a charming mounted cavalry. When Clara and her Prince turn into adult dancers near the end of Act One, the real dancing starts. The Snowflakes, one of the most famous scenes in the work, gives the Nutcracker a real shot of full ballet adrenalin to bring down the curtain on Act One (and allow the busy, busy stagehands to sweep up the mountains of snow that fall in the Act One finale). The Chinese Tiger, a show-stopping solo dance that always delights the crowd, the whirling dervishes, the Commedia troupe, the Toy Theatre cast and the enchanting Waltz of The Flowers cast are other highlights. The PNB Orchestra, under the smooth direction of Allan Dameron, deserves its own round of applause.

There is no doubt that PNB’s Nutcracker is a holiday classic for Seattle and throughout the magic kingdom of The Emerald City. Highest recommendation. Ticket and performance information is available at (206) 441-2424. Numerous matinees dot the schedule – a perfect time for family audiences.
