Enjoying new Sherlock SGN Exclusive Interview Holmes is elementary Haffi Haff rocks Seattle’s Sherlock Holmes Opening December 25 I’ll admit upfront I was highly worried about director Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes.

The trailers made it look like some sort of Victorian Pirates of the Caribbean knock-off, with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s literary detective reduced to being just another comic book superhero quickwittedly facing off against a banal series of supernatural bad guys.

Can I just say how delightful it is to having one’s preconceptions proven deliciously wrong? Not only is this new take on the iconic character a rollicking good time, the screenplay by firsttimer Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham (Invictus) and Simon Kinberg (Jumper) is surprisingly literate. In short, this movie somehow does Doyle proud, and unlike other revisionist takes on the detective gone horribly wrong (like 1985’s Young Sherlock Holmes), this one see sherlock page 28

Haffi Haff December 31 Neighbours Nightclub Iceland’s latest pop music sensation, the ever-intriguing Haffi Haff, will help Seattle ring in the New Year at Neighbours Nightclub on December 31. Haffi, or H2, has topped the music charts in Iceland since his debut in 2008.

Openly Gay and flamboyant H2 is a true entertainer with up-tempo songs and outrageously sexy music videos. SGN caught up with H2 after he landed in Seattle to discuss fame, the essence of Capitol Hill, and why Iceland just may be the coolest place on earth.

Hafsteinn Thor Gudjonsson knows a thing or two about Seattle. Before Haffi was making TV appearances and cutting tracks in the recording studio, he was growing up as little Hafsteinn, the son of Iceland immigrants, in Seattle.

Nine rates an average five

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN Contributing Writer Nine Opening December 25 Whenever a movie is based on a previous source, there is always comparison especially when that movie is based on a stage musical, which was in turn based on the semi-autobiographical Fellini film, 8 ½. This is the case with Nine, the latest from director Rob Marshall (Chicago). The movie boasts a bevy of stars in its lineup, but there is something lacking and it fails to capture the full impact of either incarnation of its predecessors.

The plot revolves around Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis), a movie director approaching 50 and dealing with a midlife crisis which finds him losing his inspirational vision.

Despite the hype of his latest film, Italia, it hasn’t even been written, and every relationship he’s involved with is falling apart, including those with his wife Luisa (Marion Cotillard), his mis-

tress Carla (Penélope Cruz), and his leading lady Claudia (Nicole Kidman). Seeking answers from two significant past influences, the deceased mother (Sophia Loren) who pampered him as a child and the local whore Saraghina (Fergie) who introduced him to his sexual awakenings, he realizes the root of his failures with the women in his present; he can’t look at a woman without the church-officiated “Madonna/whore” complex. His recognition is too late; his wife and his leading lady have had enough and left, and his film backers have backed out.

With the advice of a wise costume designer (Judi Dench), Guido must decide to either grow up or remain at the mental age of nine.

The cast reads like a who’s who, but the film doesn’t play out like one.

Daniel Day-Lewis shows a good balance of a man on the verge of a breakdown, but he’s not a likeable character. We don’t envy or sympathize with his lack of morality enough to empathize with his behavior. Penélope Cruz as Guido’s mistress is more neophyte seductress than experienced courtesan, and her “Call From The Vatican” comes across as vaudeville instead of enticement. In the stage production, Guido’s wife is present during this call – giving an explanation for the “Vatican” lie – but the film changed that and there’s no reason to be secretive, making the song’s contribution irrelevant.

As the voluptuous Saraghina, Fergie’s sexuality is evident. The song “Be Italian,” the movie’s unofficial theme, is seductive, and we can see why she influences Guido’s life. The choreography is sensual, the costuming carnal, but the song didn’t explode and that’s because these things often don’t musically translate onto celluloid. Judi Dench delivers solid work as Lilli, a costume designer on Guido’s previous films and the ever-subtle force in his life. Nicole Kidman is Claudia, the leading lady in all of Guido’s work. Her character is supposed to be tired of repeating the same role in the maestro’s movies, but her character came across as just tired. Kidman has already proven she can sing, but her character’s song (“Unusual Way”) is a love song of regret turned into contentment and Kidman doesn’t have the power needed to emote this properly.

It’s too breathy

and the longer notes sound forced from her lungs. Marion Cotillard as the hurt wife Luisa is wonderful. Her character is believable from the start as she sees through each lie her husband explains away. It’s only through her eyes that we catch glimpses of Guido’s genius and it is for this reasons that we feel her pain.

The songs are definitely moody and dark, which is what’s needed in a mental breakdown musical. The new songs are good, but they don’t fit with the set mood.

Rob Marshall is brilliant to conceive of this mental, musical-fantasy style of direction. It’s the only way to present Nine on the big screen, and it’s directed beautifully and sensually. The technique was perfectly utilized when he filmed Chicago and it works very well again with Nine. Since he’s used this technique twice now, I eagerly look forward to his next original film conception.

Fans of the stage productions will notice differences immediately. Changes range from subtle incidentals to major revisions, but not all of them work well. Those not already familiar with the production won’t notice. Stage fanatics will have to be contented with remembering that the original 1982 production won the Tony Award for Best Musical winning over Dreamgirls. It starred Raul Julia and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, winning five. The 2003 revival starring Antonio Banderas was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning two, including Best Revival.

It helps that someone, somewhere (and I’m guessing it was producer Joel Silver, of all people) managed to reign in Ritchie’s hyperactive tendencies and force him to tell a cohesive tale from start to finish. Gone are the annoyingly flashy camera and editing tricks that marred recent efforts like Revolver and RocknRolla. In their place is a refined delicacy, allowing for the plot to flesh itself out organically and at its own measured pace. Even better, for the first time since Snatch, the director lets his actors act, giving them space to craft three-dimensional characters that are intriguing and engaging to the audience and not one-note figures wallowing in their own tiresome machismo.

The plot concerns 221B Baker Street detective Holmes (Robert Downey, Jr.) and his trusted aide Dr. Watson (Jude Law) as they investigate the mysterious resurrection of the villainous Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), a Machiavellian killer they helped send to the gallows. Making things interesting is the arrival of American thief Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), the only person to ever best the super sleuth at his own logical game as well as the only woman he’s ever allowed himself to love. On top of that, Watson is on the verge of marriage, which puts the pair’s working relationship in serious jeopardy.

Okay, I will admit seeing Sherlock Holmes as a man of action is a bit disconcerting, as his sudden skill with martial arts is

something no other television or cinematic version has ever hinted at before. That said, Doyle’s books do suggest his detective isn’t incapable of standing up for himself physically, and his knowledge of ancient Asian arts are mentioned quite a few times. But those who think Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett are the actors who inhabited this character best will have trouble with the way Ritchie depicts him here – his efficiency with firearms and his fondness for fisticuffs are things old-school purists aren’t going to appreciate.

For my part, had the script not been so intellectually centered, I probably would have been amongst those crying foul. Thankfully, Sherlock Holmes is very much a thinking person’s action movie, and for all the explosions and gunshots (of which there are admittedly a few too many), the fact that the plot is so reliant on its heroes using their brains to solve the crime reduced my unease to virtually nil. Better, I love mysteries where the clues are all there for the audience to piece together themselves, and while answering the questions here aren’t exactly difficult, doing so is still an immense amount of fun.

I will say that McAdams never registers as strongly as I would have liked her to, and the fact that Holmes’ greatest adversary (next to Professor Moriarty, of course) is reduced in the end to a simplistic and cliché cowering female is more than a tiny bit annoying. I also think that there are moments of extraneous exposition not involving the detective that inadvertently slow things down a bit too much – the scenes of the conspirators hatching out their dastardly deeds are unnecessary.

But as problems go, these are relatively minor. Downey is just wonderful in the lead; he and Law have a playfully homoerotic chemistry that’s positively marvelous. Strong makes for a good bad guy, never overplaying his hand and keeping Blackwood an intriguing enigma almost all the way to the end. As for the supporting players, both Eddie Marsan (as put-upon Scotland Yard Inspector Lestrade) and Kelly Reilly (as Watson’s prim fiancée Mary) make the most of their limited screen time, each making a far greater impression than I’d imagine anyone would expect them to.

I found Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes to be pure bliss. From Hans Zimmer’s (Frost/Nixon) superb score to Philippe Rousselot’s (A River Runs Through It) smoothly enchanting cinematography to Sarah Greenwood’s (The Soloist) eye-popping production design, everything about this film reeks of class. But it is the combination of the literately engaging script and the full immersion of the actors into their respective characters that makes this effort sing, and if this is what it is going to be like for a game to be afoot in the new millennia, here’s my vote for Warner Bros. to keep this case open.

A Single Man quite possibly the Gayest film ever

The ending is perfect and unexpected – no easy task given the storyline. I couldn’t wait to see how they tied things up. I suspected the writers had painted themselves into a narrative corner. However, in a deft move, the ending is surprising, real, and a tiny bit transcendent.

Firth isn’t an extraordinary-looking man.

He is quite average looking, in fact. This probably keeps him from getting A-list roles. It’s nice to see an excellent actor get a

Julianne Moore, as always, is sublime as Charley, the beautiful gal-pal party girl just tipping past full bloom. Charley is in love with George and deals with her own sense of loss as she ponders her own life and what might have come from her youthful dalliance with her Gay friend, if only he hadn’t been so Gay. Nicholas Hoult is Kenny, the sometimes starry-eyed and sometimes wily college student whose game is tough to figure out.

Hoult is best remembered by American audiences as the cute kid from the Hugh Grant vehicle About a Boy, but better known to teenage Brits as the morally ambiguous and sexually fluid Tony Stonem from the BBC hit series Skins. Hoult is a handsome young man and a solid actor whose character keeps us guessing to the end.

Have I covered all the bases?

Have I explicated every way in which this film is superb? Probably not, but suffice to say, from the casting to the acting to the music to the art direction to the photography to the writing to the editing to the direction by fashionista-turned-director Tom Ford, the movie is done well.

This is not a vanity project by the self-absorbed designer who saved Gucci; Ford is the real deal.

So to Ford and Firth and everyone else denying the Gayness of A Single Man, let me set you, uh, straight. You have taken a sweet and romantic tale of love and tragic loss and most certainly a universal story and you have turned it into a wonderful Gay film. Your movie is magnificently Gay from first frame ‘til last. And not to go too Gertrude Stein on your asses, but your movie is regular in being Gay, it has little things that are things in being Gay, many little things that are things in being Gay, the movie is Gay everyday, it is regular, it is Gay, it is Gay the same length of time every day, it is Gay, it is quite regularly Gay (sorry, Gertrude). Mr. Ford, your movie is Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay. All the denial in the world will not change that. Gay. The Weinstein Company

A Single Man Opening December 25 In a W magazine interview with Bridget Foley, neophyte director Tom Ford said, “I want to make sure that people don’t think this is a Gay film, because it is a universal film.”

In an interview with Variety’s David Mermelstein, lead actor Colin Firth said, “It’s a love story, and love is love. George misses the love of his life, and that’s that. It could be a woman, it could be a man.

His being Gay is not the salient feature of what Tom wanted.”

You see, despite the fact that the male lead character has been in a relationship with another man for 16 years, despite the presence of a glamorous fag-hag, despite the fantasy boy with impossible blue eyes and a tendency to remove his shirt, despite the perfectly tailored suits and ‘60s couture, and despite the exquisite art direction, don’t be fooled; this is not a Gay film. I know this is not a Gay film because Tom Ford, Colin Firth, and everybody else keeps saying so.

At this point, you may think I don’t like this film. If so, you are wrong. I love this film. I am not particularly ecstatic about how people associated with this film talk about it, but I love this film.

A Single Man, based on the Christopher Isherwood novel of the same name, is about George (Firth), a buttoned-down college professor who loses the love of his life after 16 years together. George drags himself through a day contemplating suicide, remembering his past, and loathing his future, a future without his beloved Jim (Matthew Goode). He is haunted by the suburban family next door, stalked by a flirty student (Nicholas Hoult), and comforted by his glamorous BFF Charley (Julianne Moore).

Get ready for some extremely Gay, and effusive, praise. A Single Man is close to cinematic perfection. Every scene, every element within every scene, is purposeful

and relevant. The architecture, the interior design, and, yes, the costume design are aesthetically and narratively fabulous. The composition, the lighting, the overall photography, are all well-executed and pleasing. The editing is seamless and smart. This is a beautiful film to look at, and the visual elements hide secrets that are terrifically fun to uncover.

The story, while universal, is unique in its subtle honesty about the tremendous and

overwhelming impact of loss. The basic elements of storytelling are executed with polished confidence.

Living with another person for 16 years is an odd proposition. For every romantic story ever told about falling in love and living happily ever after, there are a million couples who have failed in the seemingly simple act of sharing their lives. Even couples who find a way to make it work do so with a healthy dose of compromise, splashed with a hint of denial. A Single Man illustrates the incoherent world of a lover left behind.

George is repressed and hopelessly formal in that obsolete (even in 1962) English way.

He comes to the world as an observer who feels slightly uncomfortable at the prospect of taking action. When he tries to take action, the results are fitful and mixed. Firth, with expert reserve, never lets George’s circumstance become melodramatic. The power of his devastating loss bubbles up through the fabric of his impeccably tailored suit.

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer Young Victoria Opening December 25 Seeing Young Victoria last week and asking two of the other writers there if they thought the audience was aware of any of the history involved in the film (which is treated with delightful accuracy and even a bit of whimsy, but not too much), I was suddenly glad to have been a beat-upon geek in my high school days. I may have gotten the crap beat out of me or received threats that made me run home from school – even up until my senior year in high school – but I know my English and German history.

Still, even if you were one of the more popular kids and didn’t pay attention to history, this film is just so damned good and so lovely to watch that you will most likely enjoy it anyway.

What myself and my life partner (who accompanied me) loved was how Emily Blunt played the role of young Victoria with an understated feistiness and winning childishness that made us believe this is how the young queen (who was 18 at the time she was coronated in the mid-1800s in England)

probably behaved.

Not willing to let herself be used as a pawn in power schemes between the court of Belgium and those of her social-climbing relatives (including her mother, played with an Oscar-worthy sharpness by the inimitable Miranda Richardson), Victoria rose to a level of power and respect not achieved by many of her ancestors, especially the women. She chooses the man she loves (devilishly handsome Rupert Friend) – even though she knows this is part of the plan of her relative, the King Leopold of Belgium (Thomas Kretschmann) – and makes her own decisions.

The sweep and drama of English nobility and the undertone of court intrigue in the British court is put on delicious display in Young Victoria, and should thrill any fans of the royals. But at the heart of this court drama is the romance that grows between Victoria and the man she chooses to be her husband, Prince Albert (Friend), and this is delicately handled, given a kind of otherworldliness by director Jean Marc Vallee, who might get an Oscar nod in a fair world.

The bottom line is that this is the perfect film for the holidays and should be on many “best-of” lists, including my own.

Ledisi’s dazzling show illuminates at Jazz Alley

Ledisi December 17 Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley New Year’s Eve fireworks came early to Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, in the form of Ledisi who put on a dazzling show filled with loud bangs, moments of sheer illumination, and a colorful array of original and nostalgic songs.

The four-time Grammy nominee played to a near sold-out audience on the first of four continuous nights at the intimate club, opening with “Get to Know You” from her 2007 album, Lost & Found. This girl was in control from the minute she hopped on stage, knowing how to work

a crowd and knowing exactly what kind of night she wanted it to be.

“This is my show!” the Bay Area native exclaimed to everyone before the start of the second number. “I do what I want to do.

I ain’t afraid of any of you.” With that, she glided beautifully into “Everything Changes” from her newest effort, this year’s critically patted Turn Me Loose. She next performed the title track from that record, wiggling and swaying enthusiastically in front of her microphone.

Wearing a dark sand-colored long skirt, black top and matching tailored jacket with a two-toned hairdo, Ledisi physically looked the part of a unique, independently-minded musician. And when she opened her mouth, out drifted these amazing sounds and pitches that paralleled the best in her field, from Lalah Hathaway to Shirley Caesar to Gladys Knight. Her robust vocals were splendid on “Higher Than This,” in which she unabashedly jerked her neck and shrugged her shoulders – she was in party mode, and that vibrant en-

ergy lifted some concertgoers off their seats to dance and clap along.

“Y’all want a show?” asked the R&B-gospel diva, and then went right into a churchlike number, requesting everybody stand up and shift their bodies from side to side with their hands in the air, and then she brought it all to a close by scatting the final notes.

Not every moment was high energy – Ledisi displayed a calmer side on “Best Friend” and “Alright,” a song written shortly after she’d almost given up on her dream.

“And now it’s time for Christmas,” Ledisi said warmly, then sang a silky version of “What a Wonderful World,” reaching way up into her vocal range with ease, as her musical director Tony Walker provided a subtle keyboard backdrop. Two more offerings from her CD It’s Christmas were included on the set list – a funky rendition of “Silent Night” was slightly weird, yet I enjoyed the snare drum and bass plucking in the background, and her inspirational approach to “Children Go Where I Send Thee” was quite nice.

A highlight of the evening was an acoustic delivery of “Love Never Changes,” a track co-written by fellow Oakland native Raphael Saadiq that appears on Turn Me Loose.

Ledisi finished her 75-minute appearance with “Goin’ Through Changes,” reminding the crowd that it earned her one of two Grammy nods this year (she was nominated twice in 2007, as well).

With a self-assured attitude and a bubblyyet-bold persona, one could mistake Ledisi for being overconfident. But there’s a degree of skill and precision involved in what she does, and an obvious deep love for the craft, that’s seldom found in young performers today. The bottom line is this woman can strut all she wants; she has the goods to back it up.

A Happy Gay Holiday December 18 Café Metropolitain On December 18, local performance artist Ryan Hazy teamed up with Café Metropolitain owner Quyen Luu for A Happy Gay Holiday, a performance fundraiser for the JC/Lady Graytop Memorial Scholarship fund.

Holiday fundraiser held at Café Metropolitain the show, along with the lovely Miss Madison Lane Weston. Guests were asked to give a suggested $5 donation for the scholarship fund, as well as participate in a live auction for everything from a Star Trek DVD box set to a holiday gift basket.

“Once every year, we reach a certain time of the holiday season where it’s time to give back to others and the community,” Hazy said. “It is a time for caring, sharing, being with family and friends, and building new plans for the upcoming New Year.”

Throughout the night, performers donated their tip money towards the fundraiser and entertained the audience with everything from live singing to fabulous drag numbers. Although a majority of the evening’s performers are members of the Imperial Court of Seattle (and surrounding Imperial Courts), it was not an official function of the organization. Titles and affiliations were put aside for the night for one common goal: raising money for education.

(James Torchia), vibrant members of the LGBT community and The Imperial Sovereign Court of Seattle and The Olympic and Rainier Empire. The fund was the first-ever Gay scholarship created in Seattle. Since its inception, the Court has awarded over $60,000 in various scholarships to deserving students.

“Every year, students from across the state apply for this scholarship,” Hazy said.

“Whether they are currently enrolled in college or about to go to college, this fund helps them with the cost of books, tuition and whatever else they can’t afford to pay for.”

In February, at the Imperial Court of Seattle’s Coronation, the scholarship will be awarded to one lucky applicant.

A Holiday Show to Remember December 12 Neighbours Nightclub On December 12, the Jet Chapter of the Knights of Malta (K of M), The Imperial Sovereign Court of Seattle and the Olympic & Rainier Empire, Bellingham’s Imperial Sovereign Court of the Evergreen Empire, The Imperial Sovereign Court of Everett, The Imperial Sovereign Court of Tacoma, “Diamond Empire of the Cascades,” and Neighbours Nightclub joined together for A Holiday Show to Remember.

The holiday party and drag show featured a 50/50 raffle as well as a silent auction to benefit the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation and Lifelong AIDS Alliance’s Chicken Soup Brigade. Guests and participants were asked to make a $5 donation at the door, along with an unwrapped toy or food donation for the charities.

“These five different organizations came together to raise money for two very important charities,” Rod Fender, Board President of the Imperial Court of Seattle told SGN. “The kids are our future. We want to show the kids that we do care about them. We feel it is important for us to get together and raise some money and collect toys for them.”

Neighbours Nightclub, the backdrop for the holiday and drag show, was aglow with festive decorations. The venue truly brought the North Pole to the popular Capitol Hill dance club, complete with a Christmas tree and poinsettias. Throughout the night, emcees representing the different organizations acted as host and hostess as they introduced the different drag acts – 22 in total – and auctioned off everything from a porcelain doll to a French champagne gift basket.

Adopting the age-old adage of Christmas is the season of giving, each performer donated their tips to the charities.

The holiday show kicked off with class as Michael and Rosita from the Seattle Court performed the beautiful Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli ballad “The Prayer.” Other stunning acts included Dmanda Lott’s rendition of “O Holy Night,” Ryan Hazy singing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”

The evening also included some non-traditional Christmas songs such as, Bellingham Court’s Miss Betty singing her X-rated version of “12 Days of Christmas,” Starla performing Shirley Q Liquor’s laughout-loud “12 Days of Kwanzaa,” a fierce performance of Lady GaGa’s “Bad Romance”

by Dominique D’Amoeir, “La Vie Boheme” danced and sung by the Court of Bellingham, a comical K of M production of a Christmas medley with choreography complete with a tool belt and G-strings, and a rollerskatewearing Annie Position’s acrobatic version of “Xanadu.”

The most impressive display of showmanship and instrumental prowess came when Peter from the Court of Bellingham, dressed from head to toe as a Scotsman, played “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and “Amazing Grace” on a set of bagpipes.

The standout performance of the night featured Michael and Glamazonia entertaining the audience with Frank Sinatra’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” The height difference of the larger-than-life Glamazonia and drag king Michael didn’t stop the two from cutting a rug – at one point the vertically challenged Michael danced atop a chair to get on Glamazonia’s level – with some impressive choreography. The unlikely duo clearly enjoyed themselves during the number, as did the audience.

At night’s end, A Holiday Show to Remember certainly lived up to its name.

Packed with Christmas cheer, great entertainment and enough glitter and makeup to fill even the largest of Christmas stockings, the evening was a success. This Christmas, thanks to K of M and the Imperial Courts of Seattle, Bellingham, Everett and Tacoma, a few more kids will have Christmas presents, and the Chicken Soup Brigade will receive a hearty donation.

by Shaun Knittel SGN Staff Writer Paul Villa and Curtis Bigelow have wanted to open a bar for some time, but the idea had always been a bit of a dream since both men had time-consuming professions – Bigelow is an architect, while Villa works in advertising. But, when the economic downturn took its toll on the architectural field, Bigelow began to devote time to researching the bar of his dreams.

Bigelow says that when he noticed the closing of two Gay bars on Capitol Hill, it appeared that there was a niche to fill – enter The Lobby Bar. “Our goal is to create a bar with a concept that dovetails into existing LGBT nightlife and offers people another place to gather, enjoy themselves, and meet new people,” Bigelow told SGN. The Lobby Bar, which officially opened for business December 11, is spacious, welcoming and comfortable. Guests can order cocktails and sit in the chairs at the upperlevel balcony, comfy couches in the VIPesque lounge, or benches along the ground floor.

As a way to pay homage to the past establishments that once occupied the space, each bartender has created specialty cocktails that range in price from $8 for “The Lobby,” a simple champagne cocktail, to $11 for “The Easy,” a chocolaty martini

concoction.

The food menu is geared towards snacks to share, and a few delicious entrees at reasonable prices. “Chef Lisa Ianinni has amazed us with a wonderful menu,” said Bigelow.

“Paul and I worked closely with her – meaning she cooked and we sampled – to create an offering of delicious smaller plates.”

The Lobby Bar is an LGBTQ establishment, but Bigelow says they call it a “Gay bar” in the broadest terms. “We’ve endeavored to provide a friendly, comfortable atmosphere for all the letters: L, G, B, T, and Q,” he said.

Bigelow and Villa say that opening up a bar on Pike seemed like a perfect fit. “The location provides that ‘bar-hopping’ link between lower Broadway for R Place, Neighbours, Café Metropolitain, The Crescent, The Elite, and The Eagle, and upper Broadway with C.C. Attle’s, The Cuff Complex, Madison Pub, Martin’s Off Madison, Pony and Purr,” Bigelow told SGN. “Obviously, Pike has long been known for its nightlife and it was an easy choice once we saw the potential of the space and the great flow.”

Capitol Hill is the only place they would open a bar, he said. “Paul and I lived in the Central District for many years and have just recently moved to Capitol Hill, which has been great,” he said. “Our lives center

SGN. “I don’t think people understand, or really know how amazing this city is. The people are great, the city is beautiful … the weather is … well, yeah, the city is beautiful,” he joked. “Plus, I have always felt the men here are the most attractive, when I compare them with other places I have been. Recently, I was in a restaurant on Capitol Hill and couldn’t keep myself from being totally glued to the window, peering out, watching the people as they walked by. How intriguing, attractive and special they are.”

Traveling is something that Haffi says can teach people a lot about themselves. Before he left Seattle for Iceland, he traveled all over the U.S. When he was 8 years old, he worked in Alaska on his father’s crab boat.

Doing that “taught me a lot about responsibility, and gave me a work ethic I still carry with me today.” Haffi also lived in Los Angeles, California while studying fashion design for two years.

Seattle may be home, but Haffi says Iceland is “kind of where I was reborn.” Since he was a boy, Haffi says he had an obsession with going back to find his roots in Iceland.

So, three years ago, Hafsteinn became Haffi Haff, and he moved to Iceland to start a new journey with one purpose and one goal: “to take over the country.”

Haffi did just that. Since his breakthrough performance in the Icelandic Eurovision preselection contest, H2 has performed for crowds of over 50,000 people, topped the charts with two #1 hits, and conquered the country’s music world. Haffi says he’s “been singing almost every weekend for the past two years.”

HAFFI HEATS UP ICELAND “No, there aren’t any igloos,” he joked about the island nation that sits in the middle of the north Atlantic ocean, right on the edge of the Arctic Circle. “It’s beautiful and alien in appearance.”

H2 told SGN that Iceland has a vibrant music scene where “DJs rule supreme, rock is always good, dance is in the blood of the people, and the ‘80s pretty much never left … but that’s OK, we love the ‘80s enough to keep it around!” He says the music scene is intimate and down to earth. “Think of a concentrated Capitol Hill,” said Haffi, “with the essence of Whoville.”

As an accomplished entertainer, Haffi says his music is ever-changing. “I love electronic music, so I always stay within that realm.” To understand H2’s sound, think dance mixed with electro ‘80s Depeche Mode, add a dash of Marilyn Manson, the class of Andy Warhol and Britney Spears,

“I love synths, and am very lucky that currently it is one of the hottest trends in music,” he told SGN. “I love to write about stuff that matters to me, it’s not always about sex or love. … I like to have fun. The music should sound like it was made in the future.”

“I’M TRYING TO REPRESENT GAY PEOPLE IN A GOOD LIGHT” Haffi says there’s never been a day where he “didn’t stick out in some way” – which is easy to understand, as he is tall, sexy, and exudes Gay pride. “The world needs to get over this stigma with Gays,” he said.

“Aren’t we done with this already? I’m trying to represent Gay people in a good light.

We are awesome – that’s the truth!”

“The LGBT community has been through struggles like any other oppressed people, and should know better about passing judgment. We need to stay grounded and set examples for people to learn from,” he cautioned. Still, the entertainer says there are bigger issues facing society besides quarreling about sexual orientation. “I am a fag. I use that word because it’s mine. I decided long ago that I wanted to take it from people.

It’s mine, it’s me, and that’s cool. This way, no one can use it against me,” he told SGN. “Once you take away the ammo, there is no fear of being shot,” he added.

With H2 as its headlining act, the Neighbours New Year’s Party will be an exciting and energized way to spend the holiday.

Haffi said party revelers can expect “good music that makes you smile. I want people to enjoy themselves. Isn’t that entertainment at its best?”

“Through my experiences of performing on stages, I’ve noticed that regardless of dancers, props, or bullshit that people use to disguise and confuse, it all comes down to the connection that you make with the audience,” said Haffi. “If you won’t look every single person in the eye and touch them … then go home and perform for yourself.”

“Plus, you can expect an injection of the Bedazzler,” he added. “Sick!”

In addition to his live performance, H2 will have a limited quantity of CDs available for purchase. The seven-track EP includes all of his hit singles, a new track, and a “nasty remix by an amazing Icelandic DJ Frigore.”

into your couch at home in the 1940s, with the fire blazing and the radio on, sipping eggnog and listening to the story. The struggle of George against the mean old banker Potter never gets old or tired. It may even be more applicable today than other years.

It’s pretty easy to identify with the “regular” guys and get angry with mean old Potter.

George’s dismay when Clarence lets him see life as it would have happened if George had never been born gives each of us a moment to think about our own lives and what might have been if we had never been born.

Maybe one or two of the nice things we’ve done in our lives have had the same kind of positive ripple effect that George’s have.

Goodeve displays real relief at being back in George’s own time and body, bringing the play to a satisfying end. It’s fun to watch the sound effects being created. The actors seem happy to be on the radio and presenting this show to you. As disruptive and difficult as recent events have been for the theater, you’d never know about the tumult unless you got told about it or saw it on the news. Let’s hope that their old home is fixed up quickly so they can go back to presenting well-done theatrical productions such as these in their rightful place.

It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is a sweetly done homage to old-style radio programs, complete with a sound effects guy (cutting an apple on a plate sounds the same as cutting meat) and radio commercials for “KTTC” (K Taproot Theatre Company).

This is a faithful retelling of the classic Christmas tale of Clarence, the angel waiting for his wings, coming to rescue George from committing suicide by showing him how much George’s life has meant to others. Directed by Karen Lund, the six solid cast members – headed by Grant Goodeve as George, with Jesse Notehelfer, Alex Robertson, Mark Lund, Eric Riedmann and Candace Vance – sing and read their way merrily through the tale.

Taproot was able to mount the production at the Stage One Theater at North Seattle Community College. It’s a very nice space, with wide seat aisles and a friendly environment. A simple, serviceable set by Mark Lund includes the radio “on air” signs, and the required “applause” light. The cast sings some carols before they go “on air” and harmonize deftly.

Phoenix delivers the year’s best 30 minutes

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Phoenix at The End’s “Deck the Hall Ball” December 15 WaMu Theater On the one hand, there might not be much to say about a performer that plays four songs, wishes everyone a “Merry Christmas,” and then exits the stage.

On the other hand, we’re talking about 2009’s “it” band, Phoenix.

The French quartet was an early bird on the lineup for the “Deck the Hall Ball” last week, sponsored by local radio station The End. They began their set just before 7 p.m. with the bubbly hit “Lisztomania” in front of a full crowd. Many who came specifically to check out these Euro hipsters braved rush hour traffic and sacrificed a normal dinner routine to see them in action. Fresh from a first-ever Grammy nomination and hundreds of critics’ yearend lists for the album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, the group has rapidly gained popularity in fan and media circles alike.

“We are Phoenix and we are coming from Paris, France,” said lead singer Thomas Mars, who recently announced that he and Oscar-winning screenwriter Sofia Coppola are expecting their second child.

“Lasso” was next, and it got some audience members bouncing off the floor, though the majority of concertgoers were probably still adjusting to seeing these fast-rising stars take the stage so early in the night.

(The End, 107.7 FM, usually does a great job in presenting their festival lineups by least- to most-credible artists on the bill, but with Phoenix and equally brilliant Vampire Weekend going onstage before mediocre bands like Metric and 30 Seconds to Mars,

this year’s jingly bash was awkward.)

Next on Phoenix’s set, “Girlfriend” sounded marvelous, and Mars insisted the crowd raise its hands and clap in unison as he zipped from one side of the stage to the other. In faded jeans, long-sleeve cobalt blue shirt, unpolished beige leather boots and messy hair, Mars fit the unkempt-yetsexy Parisian profile beautifully. Fellow unit members – guitarists Laurent Brancowitz and Christian Mazzalai and bassist Deck D’arcy – were a bit more chic with their wardrobe choices.

Phoenix concluded their 30-minute appearance with “1901,” currently featured on a nationwide Cadillac ad campaign. People on the main floor danced and sang the catchy chorus, “I’m falling, falling, falling, falling,” and the band extended the ending, putting an extra spin on things. Since this was my only opportunity to hear this song live this year, I moved to it wildly while watching the two mounted LED screens.

Mars stage-dived into the audience and surfed from the front to the back, then leapt again on stage to put away the closing number. He thanked everyone for clapping their hands, then shouted “Merry Christmas” before disappearing behind the curtains.

The experience of being in the same room with Phoenix here in Seattle at a time when they’ve surged upwards on everybody’s radar was almost surreal – they were on and off the stage in the same time it takes to watch an episode of Modern Family. But instead of complaining about it, I’m going to embrace the privilege of having seen them live during this banner year. Listening to “1901” and “Lisztomania” free of earphones, with Thomas Mars just feet away from me, was a perfect holiday gift. So, thank you, The End, for 30 of the best minutes of my year!

A large percentage of these youth enter adulthood homeless, destitute, and as a social underclass due to the abrupt end of much-needed social, emotional and financial support. According to the organization, these hardships – coupled with the effort required to pursue a college education – cause many foster alumni to abandon their educational and career pursuits. They frequently become intractably homeless, underemployed, and often end up living on the margins with few or no domestic, financial or community resources.

The College Success Program offers former foster youth financial assistance and support services which enable them to achieve academic success.

The night began with a public auction with proceeds going directly to the college program. Le Faux, Seattle’s finest celebrity impersonator show, followed.

Le Faux is entertainment of the highest caliber. When it comes to female impersonators, it just doesn’t get any better than Shannel. Sexy, sleek, and outrageous, Shannel is a star. Although her performances are infamous, her real talent shines through as a host. Be it a funny quip or banter with the audience, there’s no mistaking Shannel owns the audience from beginning to end.

According to Julia’s management, Le Faux incorporates Christmas songs in the show’s lineup every December. The holiday cheer fit perfectly mid-show, between tributes to Britney Spears, Liza Minnelli, Kylie Minogue, Beyoncé, Gwen Stefani, and Madonna. The Le Faux dancers were on hand to deliver wonderfully choreographed routines to accompany nearly every perfor-

mance number. The dancers and aerial acrobats are an intricate part of Le Faux; the show just wouldn’t be the same without them. In addition to the female personas, the incomparable Sean Paul has returned to Le Faux with an uncanny Michael Jackson impression. The illusion is there; as soon as Paul steps onstage, it’s as if MJ is dancing right before your eyes.

After the show, Friends of the College Success Program officials and their guests were invited for a post-show “Meet the Stars” mixer. Audience members were able to mingle with the stars of Le Faux and take pictures with their favorite performers.

At night’s end, the Le Faux Holiday Extravaganza benefit was a success. Typically, Le Faux is presented on Friday and Saturday nights at Julia’s, but in the name of raising money for education, the show’s producers and management pulled together for an unforgettable night of entertainment on Wednesday.
