An Unconventional Life Author explores a life of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’

by Shaun Knittel SGN Associate Editor I’ve read my fair share of “Gay themed” books. More often than not, I find myself skimming ahead hoping against hope that something real will appear; please, oh please, dear writer – pen something I can relate to. In my never-ending search for good Gay literature, I came across An Unconventional Life by Jonathan Clift and nearly read the book in three days. I couldn’t put it down.

I’ll explain. I’m a Gay veteran. I spent 10 years in the U.S. Navy and served under the now extinct “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy. The hiding, scheming, and paranoia that surfaces when you are forced to serve in silence is very real. In An Unconventional Life Clift captures those feelings – and more – brilliantly.

Based on a true story, John is a country boy and as a teenager in England during the 1950s thinks he will be married by the time he is 25. When his best friend Mark seduces him John thinks it’s just a teenage crush. They part when John has to go into the Royal Air Force. During the time he is away, he realizes he is Gay and marriage is not an option for him. Life takes a few unexpected turns when he returns home.

Clift told Seattle Gay News that it took him a year and a half to write the book. “I began writing it during a year when I be-

came suddenly ill,” he recalled. “Before that I was on the World Senior Tennis Circuit. I was unable to travel for a year.”

The author said that although he drew heavily from his own experiences to write the content, the book is not an autobiography. “I think it is essential that you write about things that you have knowledge of,” he said.

Clift told me that he was “so pleased to know that you could relate to certain sections of the book as that is what I was hoping to achieve.”

“I was also hoping that people who are not Gay could enjoy the book,” he admits, “and oddly enough I find that often ladies compliment me on it, which is surprising.”

Throughout the book, there is a lot of loss suffered by the main character.

Clift says that he believes that he has more than their fair share of sadness in life. “I had a good friend who was killed just like one of the characters in the book,” he explains. “Of course we have all lost friends to AIDS. I count myself fortunate to have been young during the 1960s before this terrible disease began to surface to any great extent.

I definitely think that Gay people in general are more susceptible to difficulties in their lives.”

by James Whitely SGN Staff Writer On December 20, Phoenicia (Wade Madsen) and Vic (Victor Janusz) performed their annual holiday show, Phoenicia and Vic at the Holiday Lounge in the West Hall of Century Ballroom (915 E. Pine St.). The two day only cabaret and comedy show ran on December 19 and 20 with a full house each night.

“It’s like throwing a brick of human flesh.

Its smushy and kind of odd feeling,” said Phoenicia after hurling a large fruit cake at an audience member. Phoenicia also kicked a shoe off into the house, hitting an unsuspecting woman.

said. “I was fortunate that it never happened again.”

Just by accepting Gay people in the military, he said, does not guarantee them protection from victimization.

“There will still be people who feel aggressive towards Gay people,” said Clift.

“There is no protection when this happens.

Still, Gay people are beaten up when they are in the wrong place at the wrong time and in some extreme cases they are murdered.”

I want to point out that I did not find the book depressing or dark, in fact, in a word, the book is honest.

In An Unconventional Life Clift writes a great deal about the pressures of marriage and how many closeted men give it a try only to realize that, in the end, they are Gay and living a life of deception can have consequences.

“Most parents now accept the fact that their child is Gay, but still some find it very difficult to understand and often think that going to therapy can cure their child,” he said. “But they don’t seem to realize being Gay is not like having a cold that will be gone in a few days time. If a person is Gay it often causes more heartache to try to change them. By encouraging them to get married it often produces problems later on, especially if children are involved. In an ideal world parents would love their children regardless of their sexual orientation.”

An Unconventional Life was received so well, that Clift set about writing a sequel.

A Smouldering Flame follows John during the 1980s where he is living in Mallorca with a past love. After just two years his lover dies in a boating accident and John thinks he’s suddenly facing a future alone.

However, former boyfriends and friends from the past come out of the woodwork to make for an enchanting tale of friendship, love and endurance.

The duo also dedicated “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” to a certain Muslim friend of theirs who was arrested by a plethora of police officers on his way to the Portland Christmas tree lighting ceremony on November 26 – the audience received the joke well.

As the show unfolds, Phoenicia tells a story of a childhood Christmas in the traditional cabaret style which is actually quite entertaining. She comments on Vic’s singing, saying: “Are you all right?

Before the ten minute intermission, Cherdonna, of Cherdonna and Lou, did a quick performance where she transformed into a reindeer on stage – pretty cool.

Paris Original, the best thing to happen to boylesque since Waxie Moon, also performed.

Paris’ number was absolutely beautiful. He came onto the stage in a tutu dancing to the sound of a music box. As his number began, it seemed that he was just a figure atop a music box until he began to come alive as his movements became more fluid.

As a performer, Paris Original is simply dazzling. This professionally trained dancer has the raw talent and showmanship to take him to Broadway and beyond – if you haven’t seen him yet, make a point of it.

Overall the show is good cabaret. The two have been doing their holiday show for many years and it shows. Janusz writes many of his own holiday songs, most of which involve getting or being drunk during the holidays.

Phoenicia is fun and energetic, and encourages audience participation by throwing various things at them. Before the show, she personally dressed up candy canes to give to audience members.

“If you’re allergic to cats, you should keep that thing away from your face,” she warned the audience as she flung candy canes. “I can’t tell you why.”

The only downside to the show, at least for me, is Phoenicia’s high pitched voice, which I found to be just too much at times.

If you want to catch the holiday show again, you’ll just have to wait till next year.

It’s the perfect show to take mom and dad to if they’re coming to Seattle to visit for Christmas.

Just in time for the holiday season and the new year, Neighbours Nightclub, along with AJAXX 63, Seattle Gay News, Gaysha Starr, and Stoli Vodka teamed up to produce a 2011 calendar starring International Adult Film Stars and Models: Landon Conrad, Jason Hanan (formerly Jordan Jaric), Aden Jaric, and Adam Killian.

Three top photographers, Gabriel Goldberg, Michael Stokes, and Thomas Synnamon generously donated all 12 sultry images.

On December 17 two of the models, Landon Conrad and Jason Hanan, made a public appearance, signed calendars and danced a Go-Go set to DJ’s Almond Brown and Richard J Dalton.

“Back in the late 80s Neighbours produced a calendar for a charity,” recalled Neighbours General Manager Steve Tracy. “With the overwhelming response we received from these four models we had over Gay Pride 2010, I had Gaysha Starr

approach them and she was able to secure some never before seen images that were donated for the calendar use.”

“Through several partnerships including AJAXX 63 clothing, Seattle Gay News, Stoli Vodka and Neighbours, we have raised over $7,000 for GLSEN, The Gay, Lesbian Straight, Education, Network-WA since January of this year,” said Gaysha Starr, the calendar producer. “The work that GLSEN does is important as they help set a positive school environment for LGBT students and provide sensitivity trainings for educators.”

Aden Jaric and Adam Killian will help kick-off 2011 as they arrive in January for a second calendar release party. The December 17 event was hosted by Gaysha Starr who will return as host in January.

Searing Rabbit Hole a poignant drama to relate, all while hungering for the sensitive and sensual connection between the two of them that has now vanished, maybe for good.

Izzy’s pregnancy is the wheel that sets things moving in a new direction. Howie flirts with the idea of having an affair. Nat tries to ease tensions by talking about the emotions she went through when her own son, and Becca and Izzy’s brother, met with his own too-early end. They talk and they debate and they all try to get one another to understand what it is that they are feeling even though they don’t quite have a grasp on what exactly that is themselves.

The genius here is that Lindsay-Abaire and Mitchell know how to stand back and watch, understand that even in great tragedy great moments of warmth, light and humor can be found. This isn’t a movie that revels in pain, doesn’t try to yank on a person’s heartstrings as if they were The Edge strumming an eclectic guitar. The filmmakers let the words and the actions of the characters speak for themselves and in doing so go to a place of profound intimacy that touched me beyond measure, and while surprises are few that didn’t make the tears I shed any less genuine.

To no one’s shock, I assume, a film like this is an actor’s showcase. Kidman, Eckhart and especially Wiest shimmer like rays of sunlight splashing against a wet seaside rock on a cloudy summer’s day, all of them digging into their characters to the point they almost disappear within them.

Also quite excellent is newcomer Miles Teller, his performance of such a raw, sometimes visceral intensity, I found my eyes continually drawn to him. He and Kidman have an early scene on a park bench that put

lumps in my throat, a singular request to “do this again” leaving me awestruck while I dug furiously for tissues to dab my eyes.

Weeks later Rabbit Hole has kept nagging at me and as the days have passed I’ve discovered moments, bits of dialogue and emotional truths that have continued to re-

Sara Michelle Fetters: The film is getting rave reviews, and Nicole Kidman just got nominations by both Screen Actors Guild and from the Golden Globes for Best Actress. I imagine all this has you feeling pretty great right about now.

John Cameron Mitchell: It does, yes.

I’m happy that people seem to be responding in such a positive way towards the film, and I’m very happy for Nicole, getting those [nominations]. It’s wonderful. But while I want to talk about the film whenever I can, I’m just as ready to move on to something [new]. It’s hard to always be getting so tearyeyed in the mornings. I’m tired of talking about my brother dying. I miss my friends.

I miss my family. I’m sure it’s been helpful to talk so much about my own life and about my brother but at a certain point it does get a little wearying.

Fetters: How about I try to keep those questions to a minimum, then? I’d be remiss if we don’t touch on it just a little but we definitely don’t have to dwell.

Mitchell: [laughing] Sure. Very cool. I’d appreciate that.

Fetters: As a filmmaker who has prided himself on writing his own scripts and coming up with his own uniquely original stories, what was it like when Nicole’s company approached you about making Rabbit Hole? We’re you immediately interested?

Mitchell: My agent sent me the script pre the Wall Street crash and I was just bowled over by it. I very rarely come across other people’s stuff that effects me like this did.

Probably because, you know, of my own family history and experience losing a

brother, it felt necessary to be a part of [making the film]. It felt very smooth during the read, I could imagine immediately how I would direct it and could foresee it as being an emotional touchstone much in the way that Ordinary People was for a lot of people. It felt like a quiet film in a noisy time, and I wanted to be a part of bringing something like that to life.

It was unusual for me not to have final say, final cut, if you will, but we had producers involved who knew how to trust that I could get the job done. When you have more people involved it ends up taking longer to make decisions, especially in editing. But they let me take the steering wheel, and we tried some things my way and we tried some things their way – some of which worked – but at the end of the day we were able to come up with a finished product all of us were happy with. It just took longer in editing than I was used to is all.

Fetters: How does Rabbit Hole fit in with your previous films, Shortbus and Hedwig and the Angry Inch? Is there a commonality that ties them together?

Mitchell: There is, and I could see it right away. It wasn’t like, what am I going to do with this new kind of subject matter and more restrained style of filmmaking; there wasn’t any panic. Because I’d been acting for 20 years before making Hedwig I was comfortable with taking a different approach in regards to directing [Rabbit Hole].

You approach every script as an actor differently but also trying to find the commonalities with past projects that speak to you. It’s just the same as a director.

With this, I knew immediately that stylistically this would be a more restrained [picture] than either Hedwig or Shortbus obviously were. At the same time, the characters of Becca and Howie aren’t too different than

those found in my other pictures. They’re searching, trying to figure out how they fit in with the rest of the world, the only difference being that they’ve lost a child not an angry inch or something similar.

Fetters: You’ve said in the past you didn’t have a lot of interest in working with stars and here you are with Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart.

Mitchell: And Diane Wiest. We can’t forget her. [laughs] To be serious, it was great. In many ways they were working in my style, the budget here was a third less than the one for Hedwig, so it wasn’t much different than working with my casts on my previous films. At the same time, these are the best film actors around, and they know how to make [David LindsayAbaire’s] words sing.

Becca was a perfect fit for Nicole. It’s a character she was born to play. You always think of [her] best characters as being these fortresses that you can see the emotions pouring out violently from underneath a very contained surface, and that’s Becca, and personally I think this is Nicole’s greatest performance.

This character is so unadorned and downto-earth, and her performance feels more multidimensional than anything else I’ve seen her in.

Fetters: Where did you pull inspiration from before you started shooting? We’ve talked already about how restrained it was, how the camera almost disappears, and I wonder if you had any sort of mantras you forced yourself to follow during filmmaking to make sure you never overplayed the drama and let things drop into overt sentimentality.

Mitchell: If you look at the play, it calls for a certain level of reality, also for a certain amount of gallows humor or respites from the intensity, if you will, to make it

It’s been over eight months since a devastating tragedy and Becca (Nicole Kidman) and Howie Corbett (Aaron Eckhart) are trying to make the best of things, attempting to return to as close to their normal lives as they can. They’re still going to group, still having to listen to the likes of Gabby (Sandra Oh) and her monosyllabic husband who after eight long years still haven’t moved on. But things aren’t getting any easier, and with Becca’s mom Nat (Dianne Wiest) always wanting to equate her loss with their own, and with her younger sister Izzy (Tammy Blanchard) newly pregnant, putting the past behind and getting on with life is proving far more difficult than either husband or wife surmised.

Directed by Shortbus and Hedwig and the Angry Inch auteur John Cameron Mitchell, and with a screenplay by David LindsayAbaire (adapting his own Pulitzer Prizewinning play), Rabbit Hole is a wonderfully moving and deeply emotional drama that’s as funny and lively as it is poignant and tragic. The story of two parents trying to pick up the pieces after losing their only child, this is a movie that finds light within the darkness and the beauty in despair. It is bleak but not barren, tough but not uncaring, finding truth in unspeakable hardship resonating all the way through to the marrow.

Not a lot happens, but not a lot has to. Everything is fairly straightforward. Becca quit her job to raise her child, and now she sits in an empty house day after day reminded of what it is she’s lost. Howie for his part tries to understand, goes out of his way

I got a chance to spend a few minutes over the phone with the openly Gay Mitchell a few days before the film’s Seattle release.

We touched on numerous topics, including the death of his brother and how that both hindered and helped him as he traversed Lindsay-Abaire’s emotional minefield. Here are some of the highlights from our all-toobrief conversations.

With this emotional A.D.D. that we tend to be in now as a society, it was nice to be involved with a movie that allowed me to express how I was feeling openly and honestly.

verberate. I keep pondering it; keep playing in my mind the scenes that spoke to the center of my soul. In short, I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since first watching it, and I can’t think of a stronger statement of recommendation to go out on than that. come to life. I knew I wouldn’t shoot it like a play but I looked at films from my youth that rang true that were also not too challenging in style like Ordinary People, like Tender Mercies, like Kramer vs. Kramer, that I felt got it right. It was Robert Benton and Alan J. Pakula and Robert Redford and Bruce Beresford, all of whom would do believable stories that were gentle, that had emotion and had tragedy and showed what life was really like but were also for moms, for dads, for kids, for families; these were directors who made movies about something but made them in a way in which everyone could watch them. They didn’t talk down to their audiences. Didn’t treat them as any sort of lesser beings you had to explain every little thing to.

Fetters: So, I do have to ask, were there times where you felt like your personal experiences losing your brother so early on like you did ended up helping the project?

Did this give you an added insight into Becca and Howie’s plight you otherwise would not have had?

Mitchell: Maybe it’s just the actor in me but, when I was younger and after we lost my brother we weren’t allowed to express our feelings, it wasn’t allowed in that time [or] in that place. Military family. Catholic.

Midwest. We didn’t talk about it.

So [directing this movie] allowed me to feel everything, to experience it all, and that’s of course what we expect from actors when they’re playing these sorts of characters. With this emotional A.D.D. that we tend to be in now as a society, it was nice to be involved with a movie that allowed me to express how I was feeling openly and honestly, and it was even better that my doing so could also help the production, help Nicole, Aaron and Diane connect with their characters.

That is what I wanted it to be, but it [might] take more time for people to be reminded that a good, honest cry is just as important as a thrill ride. I hope not, of course, because I think we accomplished something here with this. It was cathartic for me to make and I think the audience will see that. The movie is a 90-minute emotional release, a quiet film in a noisy time.

continued from the cover Network, Winter’s Bone to Eat Pray Love, picture after picture (including numerous more I don’t have the space to name) has attempted to show insights into the human condition speaking to the very nature of who we are and what we hope to become.

Why this year? Was there something in the air and everyone just took it upon themselves to reach for that particular bauble not knowing other filmmakers would be doing the same? Does it really matter? The simple truth is that, while I’m not going to say 2010 has been a great year at the multiplex, thanks to so many writers and directors taking these sorts of intensely psychological challenges, it’s still been a quite wonderful one.

Over the past twelve months I’ve seen films that have challenged me, moved me, taken me to heights I could never have imagined beforehand, and even if the finished product didn’t always leave me breathless, the journey itself was one I was continuously eager to be a part of.

With that in mind, here are a few of 2010’s motion pictures that truly got my blood racing. While it is impossible to see everything, I still feel pretty comfortable about my highs and my lows as far as this year is concerned.

Whether or not you care to agree is, like all choices in life, completely and uniquely your own decision.

THE BEST Winter’s Bone Director Debra Granik’s sizzling adaptation of author Daniel Woodrell’s marvelous backwoods novel is an intensely satisfying character-driven thriller I haven’t been able to get out of my mind since I first saw it during the Seattle International Film Festival.

Superbly acted across the board by Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes and Dale Dickey, this movie digs into corners and crevices impossible to let go of.

Carlos Olivier Assayas’ five-plus hour Carlos is the kind of crazy, wildly exuberant and exhilaratingly audacious achievement most directors dream of attempting but would never in their right mind actually make. The story of international terrorist Carlos “The Jackal,” the movie is an historical whirligig of intrigue, emotion and action, everything grounded thanks to a titanic central performance by Édgar Ramírez. Jeff Bridges takes on John Wayne in True Grit reboot

True Grit Now Playing My father is certain that everything you need to know about being a real man can be learned from two sources: The Bible and John Wayne movies.

Wayne and his penis won an Oscar for his 1969 performance in the Henry Hathaway adaptation of the much loved Charles Portis novel, True Grit. For the three of you who have never seen or read True Grit, it’s the story of Mattie Ross, an impetuous fourteen year old girl from Yell County Arkansas with a penchant for vengeance and her unlikely hired gun, the always irascible and often drunk, Rooster Cogburn.

Wayne and his penis won the Oscar for playing the same character he had been playing since the ‘30s. He beat the likes of Richard Burton, Jon Voight, Dustin Hoffman, and Peter O’Toole. He actually won the Oscar because he had been around since the earth cooled and had been reliable box office bank pretty much the entire time. He and his penis did not win for playing the same character he had played in countless films since the ‘30s. And yes, I’m still bitter that Julia Roberts beat out Ellen Burstyn in 2001 for the same reason.

Jeff Bridges’ take on Rooster Cogburn is the reason the Coen brothers 2010 reboot was made (and the main reason to see it).

The novel is effectively set in the 18th Century. Celia Pierce is a seamstress who longs for adventure. She is kidnapped by pirates who hope she can sew up some of their wounded comrades. Gayle Malvern is the daughter of the ship’s captain, who winds up acting as captain while her father is unable to. Celia finds her adventure. The sex scenes are fun.

Babette La Fave was fun, next, as the Clockwork Doll. Indigo Blue stripped nicely to the Snow Queen’s music. Waxie Moon and Osiris Bombay tap danced masterfully as the Volga Boys, also stripping off their zoot suits.

Polly Wood did an amazing aerialist act.

Indigo Blue did some quick changes as the tea lady. Waxie Moon did a lithe strip dance as the Rat King.

A Christmas Story: The Musical!

5th Avenue Theatre Through December 30 There is so much good about the new musical adaptation of Jean Shepherd’s A Christmas Story – the beloved film about childhood in the 1940s in Indiana and his earlier best-selling collection of short stories, In God We Trust – All Others Pay Cash – that it seems churlish to point out the many problems the new show has on its route to “Christmas classic,” other regional theaters, and maybe, just maybe, New York and Broadway. So, in the spirit of the season, let’s put the emphasis on what’s right about the new stage musical.

There are enough high spirits and high energy on the 5th Avenue Theatre’s stage to light up most of the Emerald City for the month of December. Delightful children sing and dance, cheerful adults sing and dance. There’s much singing, much dancing, a lot of mugging, and a few touching sentimental moments. Performances are bright and sharp, and the budget-minded staging uses creativity to fill the 5th Avenue’s stage.

The large cast is tops in every department.

John Bolton, a New York veteran, plays the role of the Old Man (as in Ralphie’s father) and he is superb in every moment. A tall, lanky Jimmy Stewart type – maybe a Dick Van Dyke type – Bolton knows his way around the musical stage. His “The Genius on Cleveland Street” early in Act One may be inspired by early vaudeville, but Bolton

sells it to the back of the top balcony. He’s a force of nature and hopefully he will return to Seattle soon in a stronger show. His scene with his “artistic” knee-high lamp prize is strong, and the production number nicely builds to a visual highlight that supports the scene beautifully.

Seattle’s Frank Corrado gets to “be” Jean Shepherd, telling his Christmas memory on his popular 1970s radio program. His is the voice of reason in the frantic whirl of the musical moments. And the show gets a plus for incorporating many radio-era sound effects in the tale – a prop man “walking” an empty pair of shoes to get the right sound, door chimes from musical instruments.

Corrado’s winning performance makes this reviewer wonder if it’s too late for Corrado to actually read the original Jean Shepherd stories on local radio this or another holiday season. A quartet of radio singers add class – and some great harmonies – to the production.

Seattle’s Anne Allgood is just that: always good, often brilliant. She plays Ralphie’s mother – stern at times, giving at key moments, always loving, but alas, always put upon. She and Carol Swarbrick – a Broadway veteran who now lives in the Emerald City area – are walking illustrations of actors triumphing over the material in this new show. Swarbrick tackles the thankless role of the local schoolteacher who gets her best bits in fantasy outings – like a wonderful Wicked Witch of the West, complete with flying monkeys.

Olympia’s Clarke Hallum is a constant delight as Ralphie, the kid who wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. Even though

The multipleaward winner stars in The Showgirl Must Go On, a musical extravaganza taped at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas that premieres on December 31. Midler performs some of her most recognized work during the performance, including “From a Distance”, “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Wind Beneath My Wings” with help from her longtime backup clan, the Harlettes - a 13-piece band and the Caesars Salad Girls also join in. The Showgirl Must Go On debuts on HBO this New Year’s Eve. If you can’t escape to the islands, let the islands come to you. The magical sounds of Hawaiian music, integral to the rich culture of the Pacific island chain, are en route to Seattle. Some of the country’s finest musicians are from the Aloha State, and many of them play a form of slack key guitar - a genre of loose-style guitar that was introduced by the Hawaiians. Among the artists known for his slack key guitar skills is Makana, who often sells out concerts in Seattle and other mainland cities. The talented singer-songwriter, a lively performer of both traditional Hawaiian and contemporary rock music, even has a fan base as far away as Europe.

Ho received her Seattle invite from Sister Alma Children of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. “I love the Gay nuns – they is so nasty! Just playin’. They are brave, hilarious, and outrageous – all for a good cause,” Wendy Ho told Seattle Gay News. “I, myself, use an over the top persona to get people to listen, so I pretty much relate to all of my sisters in drag. As a recovering Catholic, I love the satire on nuns.”

For those readers unfamiliar with Ho’s body of work, well … it’s better explained by the ho herself. “From what I can tell, people generally feel relieved after a Wendy Ho show. I can never tell people what to expect,

everyone claims he’ll shoot his eye out with it, he knows it is the only gift that will make him happy. Hallum, an 11-year-old sixthgrader, is remarkable – he has energy and stamina, as well as acting and vocal skill.

Like many of the large group of children in the show, he is very hard to understand in the vast 5th Avenue. The sound levels seemed well adjusted at last week’s official opening night – but much of the show turned to mush before the songs, and even some of the dialogue got out to the audience. Any show written to give so much material to child actors faces the same problem, but A Christmas Story: The Musical! seemed more problematical than many.

Quick summary: bright, vibrant production, a natural for family audiences, especially at the holiday time.

Enter Scrooge McHamlin. The show officially opened a year ago at the Kansas City Repertory Theatre where Eric Rosen, the artistic director there, staged the show, as he does here. While the world premiere was well received and did solid box office, the producers thought the show could and should be better. The original songwriting team was dismissed and replaced, and a totally new score was written for the Seattle staging – the second in what is hoped will be a steady march to Broadway and a new “cash cow” status for holiday shows. While

the new score is fun, it is not very memorable, not even when hearing it performed onstage. Not one melody, not one fragment remains as the audience leaves the theater.

Not every show with adorable children stage center can produce a “Tomorrow” (as Annie famously did), but it seems imperative that some musical moments be more than serviceable.

A lot of the show contains subject matter that is questionable for a “family show.” Several sequences illustrate the profanity that the Old Man is famous for.

When Ralphie finally stands up to the neighborhood bullies, he blackens the skies of Indiana with a similar smear, “and my mother heard.”

(The show, of course, substitutes soundalike vocabulary, but the impression of some very adult moments made some parents in the opening night audience clearly uncomfortable.) It may be no big deal in today’s anything-goes vocabulary department, but it is a factor to consider in selling the show in “family” slots. A lengthy department store sequence with a drunken Santa is another questionable – and trite – inclusion.

There’s much to like in the new A Christmas Story: The Musical! It continues at the 5th Avenue Theatre – which is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a musical theater – through December 30. Ticket information is available at (206) 625-1900.

Wendy Ho is no stranger to the stage.

“I got my start as a HOfessional six years ago while living in New York City,” she explains. “I was singing in an R&B band, legit stuff: Aretha, Chaka, Janis, but I wanted to somehow link humor into it, I was trying to find a voice.”

Don’t get it twisted. This isn’t character.

“I’ve always been a ‘Ho’,” she said.

“I started to come to life when I was a fat n’ sassy little five-year-old getting switched cuz I back-talked to me Meemaw,” recalls Ho. “Later on in college I started writing raps about teachers and students. Word spread that there was a white girl in the theater department that did funny raps, which led to me performing at parties. Eventually people stopped calling me ‘Wendy Jo,’ and started calling me ‘Wendy Ho.’ My reputation as ‘Ho’ followed me to each theater gig that I booked, and I would always inevitably end up splitting and signing something nasty at the cast parties. So four years after living in New York, and trying to make it as a stage actress and singer, I decided it was time to stop standing in lines at auditions, trying to fit into someone else’s mold, and start forging my own path. I knew from the reaction that I had something different and funny to some people, and so now I find myself still navigating uncharted territory. I am a pioneer ‘ho.’”

Wendy says she’s been to Seattle three time, to visit, but this will be her debut performance. “I think of Seattle as one of the final frontiers in the U.S. and people are very expanded up here. Big brains!” she said. “My man is from Seattle. He’s got a big brain, and a huge … nevermind …y’all don’t wanna know about that.”

Wendy Ho is not a drag queen. She is all woman and all ho. “The fact that the majority of my audience is 90% Gay men thrills me to no end,” she told SGN. “It is a bitchy, super smart, sophisticated crowd, honey.

You gotta bring it to know how to hang. I’m a clown and a whore for a laugh, so the fact that some people don’t find it funny will always be something I have a hard time swallowing. But when you a ho, you get paid to

swallow, so you take whatcha gets.”

“The calendar participants are all career firefighters from the State of Washington,” Heivilin told SGN. “They compete for a spot on the calendar at a judging event usually held in May.” In addition to Gay venues, firefighters can be seen autographing calendars at Macy’s and Barnes & Noble in downtown Seattle, the Northwest Women’s Show, the Woodinville Women’s Show and several malls throughout the state. When a firefighter volunteers to be a part of the calendar, they also volunteer to do 40+ signing events all on their own time. Firefighters do it because they are passionate about the cause.
