SGN PICKS – Voices Rising, a Queer Hottest artists 2009 spoken-word extravaganza

Of the many artists that broke through or made a name for themselves in 2009, the following (in order) outdistanced the rest.

2) Taylor Swift The 17-yearold country pop singer-songwriter, guitarist and actress Taylor Swift took the music scene by storm in 2009. She was everywhere, winning one award after another, selling out arenas across the country, and making music that you just can’t stop singing along to. Voices Rising December 11 Richard Hugo House On December 11, Voices Rising returned to the Richard Hugo House with their sixth powerful and passionate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning (LGBTQ) Queers of color spoken-word extravaganza. Nearly 150 people turned out to the local event, which is quickly becoming a must-see show for any poetry or theater aficionado.

From start to finish, Voices Rising is a mind-blowing and enlightening evening jam-packed with vocally gifted artists. Like a runaway train, the urban poets take the audience on a collision course towards an emotionally charged explosion of introspection and empowerment.

Voices Rising founder and artistic director Storme Webber emceed the event. Webber, a well-respected poet, spoken-word artist, vocalist and cultural producer, is a Richard Hugo House writer-inresidence, and made the perfect host – it is obvious that she pours her heart and soul into Voices Rising. Albert Rodriguez’s picks Whether it’s 90 degrees and I’m enjoying a cool breeze under a tree at Woodland Park Zoo or it’s a freezing 30 degrees and I’m waiting for the doors to open at the Moore Theatre to be the first inside, the best place to find me is at a concert. There were a lot of great shows this year, yet there were also some disappointments (Yann Tiersen at Neumos comes to mind vividly). SGN PICKS – Best live performances of 2009 Jessica Price’s picks This wasn’t exactly a milestone year for live music, but it was full of surprises. Beyoncé and Pink dangling from the ceiling?

My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode, and Morrissey on the tour circuit again? At least if nothing groundbreakingly new happened, artists with a few records under their belt or longstanding careers really gave performances to remember. Here are my picks for most memorable shows of 2009.

vorite bands when they come to town. There is no better place to catch a live act than Seattle. This is a music town, and when the tour bus arrives, everyone knows you better bring it. This year, I was fortunate enough to review shows that ranged from ‘80s pop legends to a gifted pianist backed by a symphony, and had a blast every step of the way.

This year produced a long list of great recordings and memorable headlines, but it also had its share of earaches, career-ending moves, over-exposures, and completely untalented annoyances. Here are our picks, in order of their ridiculously poor contributions, for the worst music of the year.

Please. Even she had the guts to dump him once and for all. Let’s hope his new album – a clear attempt to get back into the public’s good graces – fades away just like he should. (J. Price) 5) Black Eyed Peas “Boom Boom Pow” single, overblown commercial act A band that borrows is a band that, well, borrows. The Black Eyed Peas, led by the un-sexy Fergie and the un-cool Will.i.am, shamelessly pickpocket every great R&B, pop and dance act out there. Their over-thetop single “Boom Boom Pow” may have been downloaded the most times on iTunes in ‘09, but that’s because it sounds like so many other songs we’ve heard before – I rest my case. (A. Rodriguez) 6) Miley Cyrus Bratty tween stardom, non-talent, Disney poser She was adorable five years ago, but these days she’s a nuisance who dresses like a teenage Russian bride. The only interesting thing about Miley Cyrus was her cute underwear model/boyfriend – 10 years her senior – though now that she’s single again, yawn, it’s back to singing karaoke anthems and playing Barbie hooker dress-up. (A. Rodriguez) 7) Eminem Relapse album and artistic downslide If only Em’s latest album really was a relapse, then he wouldn’t have made the SGN “worst of” list. Relapse may have been a commercial success, but musically speaking, is the artist’s weakest album to date.

“Crack a Bottle” sounds like a commercial jingle or some sort of fusion of rap and polka. In fact, the whole album has a game show music feel to it. After listening to the CD, in a desperate attempt to convince myself there was a song or two I liked, I ultimately found myself hawking it at a used CD store for money that went towards aspirin. (S. Knittel) 8) Wolfmother New band lineup milked

original lineup for fame Grammy-winning Australian trio Wolfmother reformed in 2009 after losing twothirds of its original threesome (Myles Heskett, Chris Ross). It was supposed to be a re-branding of the band under the headship of lead singer Andrew Stockdale, instead it was a replica of the original band using the same band name to win back their fans. Price) 6) Phoenix French quartet Phoenix came up with 2009’s cheeriest pop album, the careertopping Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix – you couldn’t help but turn up the volume when “1901” played in the background of that Cadillac commercial. A well-deserved Grammy nomination, a spot on nearly every major critics year-end list, and the snappiest dressers this side of the Seine equals red hot – vive le Phoenix! (A. Rodriguez)

Second, these guys are now selling out sports arenas and earning major Grammy nominations, including nods for record and song of the year – baby, that’s hot! (A. Her movie Obsessed may have been a flop in theory, but people still turned out in droves to see it, making the meandering thriller a commercial success.

9) Green Day When most punk rockers grow up, they disappear or end up playing on a 12-band “remember us” tour – not Green Day. They grew up, and got better. Admit it, you were thinking “Was American Idiot their finest hour?” The fans asked and Green Day answered with the loud, in-your-face rock and roll fireball of an album 21st Century Breakdown. Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tre Cool still got it, and we still want it.

10) Whitney Houston This year, we were all witness to one of music’s greatest comeback stories. I Look To You is classic Whitney, the Whitney we know and love, and thankfully, the Whitney we no longer have to miss. Sure, her voice isn’t what it used to be, but it’s still her voice. by E. Joyce Glasgow SGN A&E Writer The Charles Lloyd New Quartet December 6 Town Hall Legendary jazz saxophonist and flautist Charles Lloyd returned to Seattle on December 6 for an incredible concert at Town Hall with Jason Moran on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass, and Eric Harland on drums.

This Earshot-sponsored event was one of the highlight jazz concerts of the year and a fitting, celebratory punctuation to bring

2009 to a close.

Charles Lloyd has played and recorded with some of the great musicians of our time, including Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, Cannonball Adderley, Zakir Hussain, Billy Higgins, Chico Hamilton, Cecil McBee, Herbie Hancock and Michel Petrucciani.

Now 71, Lloyd has been on a spiritual quest his whole life, both personally and through his music. He semi-retired temporarily from his musical career in the 1970s and spent his time teaching meditation. He has said, “For me, the purpose of life is to

know God, and the struggle of spiritual life will go on as long as I have breath. The pursuit and the music are one.” Another moving quote from Lloyd: “Music is a healing force. It has the ability to transcend boundaries, it can touch the heart directly, it can speak to a depth of the spirit where no words are needed. It is a most powerful form of communication and expression of beauty.”

The beauty of his spirit shines through his lyrical, graceful, reverent and sensitive playing. His connection to spirit was also reflected on the evening of his concert in the lovely touches of fresh white and red flowers on the stage.

Lloyd has chosen the perfect musicians to compliment his musical vision. All are accomplished, versatile and innovative in their approaches to their individual instruments. The four together produced so much musical excitement that I could barely stay in my seat, wishing instead to leap up and move to the infectious rhythms and beautiful spirit and sensuality of the music.

Lloyd started out the evening by telling us an interesting story of a Roma musician in Budapest, Hungary, who played a taragato, a folk variant of the clarinet, and had Lloyd rolling on the floor in its spell. Lloyd really wanted one to play, but as it was the national instrument of Hungary, none were let out of the country. Some time after, some Roma people came to his home and presented him with one. Lloyd played his red taragato in his concert, and it sounded like a cross between a clarinet and a more Middle Eastern or Indian instrument – kind of like a snake charmer’s hypnotic horn. Lloyd picked up his tenor sax and spent the rest of the evening serenading the audience with his distinctive stream-of-consciousness horn playing. Strains of “Let My People Go” melted into pure improvisations by the four musi-

cians.

Lloyd and the group moved from Eastern influenced music into abstract improvisations, then into sweet, dreamy melodies, and then into Caribbean-flavored, energetic, toe-tapping music. Drummer Eric Harland created complex and distinctive percussion landscapes as a strong foundation throughout the evening. Moran created many colors and moods on piano, and Rogers provided a deep, soulful, fluid undercurrent on bass.

The audience was on their feet at the end of their long set, and brought the group back for several encores, including a profound recitation by Lloyd of poetic words he attributed to Sri Krishna about the renunciation of the material world and all its encumbrances. The quartet also played Lloyd’s well-loved “Forest Flower” as an encore.

Lloyd is one-of-a-kind and a delightful human being. His music is transcendent.

I really admire his commitment to finding and expressing himself in his highest purpose. In the meantime, we, the audience, have the privilege of finding great inspiration and spiritual connection through listening to the music of Charles Lloyd.

Twelfth Night Seattle Shakespeare Company Through December 27 Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is one of his classic mistaken identities plays. It starts with a brother and sister who each think the other has been drowned at sea. The sister, Viola – played by Susanna Millonzi with a fresh, modern sensibility – takes on the role of a young boy and a job as a page to Duke Orsino (unfortunately overly foppishly played by Jose A. Rufino). She falls in love with him while he pines for Olivia (Brenda Joyner), and Olivia falls for Viola’s boy persona, Cesario. Of course, the brother and sister are twins, so when Sebastian (Tim Gouran) shows up, everyone thinks he’s her, and vice versa. It’s an old story, and there’s no going back and rewriting it at this point.

A major subplot deals with Olivia’s main servant, Malvolio (played with imperious delight by John Bogar), who is made a fool of by her woman servant, Maria (Carol Roscoe), her drunken uncle (Ray Gonzalez),

his drunken friend (Darragh Kennan), and the jester (Chris Ensweiler). Bogar spices up the role with snatches of operatic solos, which is a nice touch.

This Seattle Shakes production is presented well, and is played primarily for laughs.

Some of the funnier sequences include a fun faux swordfight between the drunken fop and Viola, but not all the jokes land on the funny side. It’s a serviceable production, but doesn’t rise to the level the Shakes is capable of reaching. Millonzi, Bogar and Joyner do particularly well. Sean Patrick Taylor provides nice onstage musical accompaniment, but sometimes distracts rather than adds.

Costumes (Melanie Taylor Burgess), sets (Andrea Bryn Bush), lights (Andrew D. Smith), and fight choreography (Gordon Carpenter) are all done well. There is a nice dance sequence by Jennifer Havlin. Director Stephanie Shine keeps the pacing and the humor rolling along.

Radio City Rockettes rock in Seattle

Radio City Christmas Spectacular Paramount Theatre Through January 3 New York City’s Radio City Music Hall has presented many acts since opening, perhaps none so famous as The Rockettes. This line of 22 talented, high-kicking women arrived at the Paramount Theatre and they did so with style. Opening night, the team arrived on Seattle’s “Duck,” with a Marine escort and chaired a Toys for Tots campaign in the theater’s lobby. What followed was exactly what their title boasted: a Radio City Christmas spectacular.

Seattle Shakes settles for serviceable Twelfth Night

reading A Visit From St. Nicholas. When he finished, the stage cleared and the lights dimmed. For just under two hours (including intermission), 12 scenes of Christmas were played out before us.

Serving as host and narrator, Santa Claus begins his Seattle-bound journey from the North Pole. His arrival sparked song and dance from a chorus of talented dancers, including several size-appropriate “elves.”

When Santa hung out the stockings, the audience was treated to several shapely legs which heralded the appearance of the Rockette angels. These women know what their audiences expect of them and they deliver. Dancing out “The Twelve Days of Christmas” through the precision tap they are known for, the Rockettes did a wonderful job. The show continued with a salute to

The Nutcracker and a Parade of the Wooden Soldiers. Act One ended with homage paid to New York City itself, and the full team of Rockettes leaped out of a taxi cab and highkicked their way across the stage.

Act Two revolved around Santa, his helpers, and the toys they make. The Rockettes appeared at different points throughout the show, including as a team of ragdolls that come to life. The final scene dealt with “One Solitary Life,” the story of Jesus’ birth and death, and ended with a scene of the living nativity. While the scene can make nonChristian audience members a little uncomfortable, they can easily become lost in the beauty of the presentation. Although reminiscent of “Pride Rock” (complete with live camels and sheep), this was beautifully staged. The lighting was set in muted tones and the music was soothing enough to make even the meanest of Grinches reflect on the theological meaning of what this season is supposed to represent.

To say that the Radio City Christmas Spectacular has targeted a “family audience” is highly understated. If you are

looking for a deeply significant meaning to the season, then this show is definitely not for you. Like a light snowfall, this show is fluffy and doesn’t hold a lot of substance.

But, like that same snowfall, snuggled down in a comfortable seat, it’s a pure delight to watch. And who couldn’t use a little winter wonderland?

The Rockettes return to the Paramount Theatre after their Seattle premier in 2003.

Performing twice daily (except Mondays) and up to four shows a day on the weekends, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular also offers a 1 p.m. matinee on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The Toys for Tots drive will continue throughout the Seattle run. Only two other guests are scheduled at this time to open the show with a reading of A Visit From St. Nicholas, including Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck.

Originally appearing at the opening of Radio City Music Hall in 1932, the Rockettes debuted in 1925 in St. Louis as the “Missouri Rockets.” Founding father Russell Market always referred to them as his “dancing daughters.” Their name changed when they were brought to NYC by the showman S.L. “Roxy” Rothafel, who began calling them his “Roxyettes.”

Celebrating 36 Years!

Santaland Diaries Bathhouse Theatre Through December 24 Seattle Public Theatre (SPT) is currently running David Sedaris’ The Santaland Diaries until December 24, at the historic Bathhouse Theatre on Greenlake. The nowclassic story, recounting Sedaris’ experience as a Macy’s Christmas elf, is directed by Makaela Pollock and performed by Andrew Litzky. The show is absurdly funny and transfers well to the stage.

Many years ago, Seattle Weekly columnist Bruce Barcott wrote, “Santaland Diaries is quite possibly the 31 funniest pages of text published in the past quarter-century.”

Litzky delivers the 31-page monologue flawlessly, and although he doesn’t have the familiar voice we know from National Public Radio, he delivers it with an energy that matches Sedaris’ derisive wit perfectly.

The show – for mature elves only – is not your typical Christmas carol. Santaland Diaries pokes fun at the commercialization of Christmas and the families taking part in

it as Sedaris observes them trying desperately to see Santa and get their child’s photo taken.

If you’re hoping for just a little bit of coal in your stocking this year, Santaland Diaries is what you’re waiting for.

From a Santa who really thinks he is Santa as long as he’s on the clock to children writing their names in artificial snow, along with celebrity run-ins and non-English-speaking foreigners being shoved into line and forced to sit on Santa’s lap, Santaland Diaries will keep you laughing the whole way through.

“As he recounts his travails as an elf, he knocks us out of our holiday haze of consumerism washed with sentimentality, and through his wry and sardonic comments allows us to have a real Christmas moment,” says Pollock.

The one-hour show is a tradition at SPT at the Bathhouse, so if you can’t catch it this year, be sure to catch it next year. SPT is a nonprofit professional theater on the shores of Green Lake, dedicated to creating community thorough the performing arts.

Avatar brings Hollywood cinema into the 21st century

by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer Avatar Opening December 18 Watching a big screen love scene between 10-foot-tall blue aliens in 3D is officially a weird experience. And these aren’t your average 10-foot-tall tall blue aliens in 3D, these aliens are the result of the most sophisticated cinematic technology ever created. And they are awesome.

Avatar is many things. It is the most expensive film ever made, according to inexact estimates by Hollywood type folks. Avatar is also classic Hollywood movie fare.

There are un-conflicted villains, beautiful young heroes, wise sages, environmentally conscious natives, chase scenes, explosions, and a wondrous journey into another world.

Avatar is a movie directed by an egomaniac with an overblown sense of self importance and a knack for extravagant budgets and movies that make lots of cold, hard cash.

Most importantly, Avatar is a good movie.

There’s nothing wrong with classic Hollywood fare as long as we don’t ask too much of it. The Hollywood style is all about tight continuity editing, solid storytelling, familiar characters, and pure movie magic. Avatar is brimming with all the above.

Here’s the skinny: Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is a paraplegic war vet selected to work on the Avatar project. This corporate funded science project, headed by Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver),

Santaland Diaries at the Bathhouse

grows human/alien hybrid avatars that will allow humans to breathe the air on Pandora, a mining outpost planet being exploited for its natural resources.

Pandora is home to the Na’vi, a humanoid race of blue 10-foot natives with a unique connection to their natural world. Sully gets his avatar and is taken into the Na’vi community to learn their ways. Sully learns some lessons and falls in love. Along the way there are lots of explosions and bad guys, and cool Pandoran flora and fauna.

It’s only Cameron’s eighth film as director, and he has a pretty good record with me personally. I never saw Piranha II: The Spawning (I think I actually might have seen it once in the ‘80s, but I was probably on a controlled substance of some sort so it doesn’t count for the purposes of professional criticism). Next came the original Terminator: liked it. After that he directed Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2, and True Lies: liked it, liked it, liked it, and liked it.

Then came Titanic. I never understood the fascination. I’d have paid double to watch the last 20 minutes twice and be completely spared the hours and hours of Cameron masturbation that went before. It seems all of Cameron’s demons that I was able to forgive in the five previous films converged in a perfect storm of bad dialogue, predictable plot devices, contrived tension, overblown music, stock characters, and surprisingly poor acting by talented actors. It was, however, cool when the ship sank.

Which bring us to number eight: Avatar –

which I liked. That means I found six of the seven Cameron films that I’ve seen while coherent worthy of my approval. Even I find this surprising. I would still rather have lunch with David Lynch or Lynn Shelton, but apparently, I’m a Cameron fan.

The key here is that Avatar is pure movie magic. The story is familiar, but with contemporary twists that make it new and fresh. Cameron’s strengths are hitting on all cylinders and it seems like somebody is whispering a little cinematic temperance in his ear. Don’t get me wrong, the movie is spectacular, but in all the right ways.

Even the 3D was subtle and effective without being intrusive. Cameron stays away from ubiquitous 3D gimmicks that get tiresome quickly (anybody see the Zemeckis version of Beowulf?). The 3D is not so much a marketing stunt here as it’s another cinematic tool used to transport the viewer even more completely into the fictional world.

The Na’vi (and the avatars) are gorgeous.

I forgot I was watching CGI. The actors are present and their acting comes through due to cutting-edge computer magic and performance capture animation that is too boring for words, but makes for amazing im-

ages.

Worthington gets the job done as the paraplegic soldier who goes native. Weaver, as always, is a beautiful and powerful force onscreen, and Giovanni Ribisi steals scenes as the corporate hatchet man.

Special kudos are reserved for one of my new favorite actors, Zoë Saldana. Saldana shines through the CGI as the fiery Na’vi chief’s daughter, Neytiri. Saldana stole my heart this summer as the revamped Uhura in the new Star Trek flick, and she doesn’t let me down here.

So, Avatar is a good movie. It’s a fun ride and the technology is astounding without being intrusive. And it’s not as if Avatar doesn’t provoke a couple of interesting intellectual questions. What’s the difference between a colonizer and an occupier? What happens when the corporation becomes the government? What are the consequences of cultural hubris that assumes a less technologically advanced culture has less advanced ideas?

The problem is, we’ve asked these questions before. The 20th century was pretty much consumed with these questions. On the other hand, we never got real answers to them then and those answers seem like moving targets in the insanely paced, technology-driven 21st century.

But it doesn’t really matter if Avatar provokes intellectual questions or not. What does matter, and what this film was built to do, is that Avatar entertains.

This is an excellent example of the oft-derided Hollywood style movie, and one you absolutely must experience on the big screen.

each act and tirelessly promotes the writing and artistic expression that comes out of the Seattle LGBTQ artists of color. She opened and closed the show by gracefully thanking the audience for supporting local arts.

The show, sponsored by Pride Foundation, featured Chad Goller-Sojourner and four incredible Queer women of color: Crystal Ybarra, Luzviminda Uzuri “LuLu” Carpenter, Ela Barton, and Marita Isabel.

Ela Barton was the first artist to wow the audience. Barton, ranked as one of the top poets at the 2009 International Women of the World Poetry Slam, is not a new face to fans of the Seattle Poetry Slam. Barton is unapologetic, smart, and sharp-tongued – nothing seemed immune to her poignant observations. From taking on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (Barton is a former U.S. Navy sailor) to same-sex stereotypes, she seemed the perfect fit as the opening act, eliciting cheers from the audience for piece after piece.

Next up was Marita Isabel, a Filipina American diva whose happy energy was infectious. Isabel is somewhat of a two-sided coin; on one side, her poetry reveals a selfconscious woman struggling to see herself as a sexual being, while on the other side, she describes a steamy sexual encounter vocalized as different kinds of fruit. With a flash of her beautiful smile, she’s got you hooked. Just when you think Isabel is done blowing your mind, she reads another poem and you’ve got a new favorite from her repertoire of blissful “goodbad things.”

The featured performer of the night, Chad Goller-Sojourner, is as funny as he is serious. Using wit to communicate drama, Goller-Sojourner held the audience with bated breath as he performed excerpts from his award-winning and nationally touring solo show Sitting with Rich White Girls: Memoirs of a Bulimic Black Boy. More than just a memoir, his is a crushingly honest reclamation story of a fat, Gay, bulimic black boy raised by white parents and struggling to find beauty, acceptance and safe space in a world that seems to be short on all.

Through his pain and triumph at the hands of some of life’s hardest lessons, Goller-Sojourner pulls at your heartstrings and makes you smile because, in the end, he made it through OK. In many ways, he has created a story we can all own; there is a little piece

of all of us in his recollections of the past, metaphorically speaking. When it comes to dramatic interpretation, it doesn’t get any better than Chad Goller-Sojourner.

Voices Rising repeat poet Crystal Ybarra is always at the top of her game, wherever she reads. Ybarra offers raw, unapologetic writing, drawing from realities of life and mind, she is an in-your-face artist with a rhythm divine. Listening to Ybarra is pleasure and pain, like running your fingers quickly through a candle flame – her words are as hot as they are cold, dancing about, emitting heat and light. True, on the surface her poems speak of drug abuse, death and despair, but you soon find that after the layers peel away, Ybarra speaks of survival and reclaimed power. Without a doubt, she tells it like it is, and you find yourself wanting her to tell you again, and again, and again – even if her words aren’t wrapped in pretty pink bows.

Luzviminda Uzuri “LuLu” Carpenter, an artist who challenges oppression through different outlets, closed the show. LuLu began with a piece about the horrors that can be found on the internet, by describing that with every click of the mouse you can view things that you maybe ought not see. Her connection with the audience was instantaneous, each savory word was thought-provoking and heavy. Still, LuLu was anything but depressing; more teacher than poet, she taught the audience spoken-word 101, and we loved every minute of it. To close her set, she invited a group of friends onstage to sing Bob Marley’s “Turn Your Lights Down Low” as she played drums.

Richard Hugo House’s intimate, cozy theater served as the perfect venue for the event. One of the most enjoyable aspects of Voices Rising is the non-commercialization of the event. When the audience applauds, the cheering goes on as long as it naturally should. Nothing is hurried or plastic; the show truly is a unique experience that is a Capitol Hill treasure. The artists are from our own backyard and are unpretentious and unpresumptuous – they simply approach the microphone and spit some of the best spoken-word you could hear. These voices truly are rising, and the sky is the limit.
