Arnaldo! has been opening hearts and minds through music one cabaret at a time for a while now, and nobody does holiday cabaret better! I’ve seen the drag chanteuse perform many times and I must say she just keeps getting better all the time. Seattle Unity Church last weekend for a two-night concert to kick off the creation of a new nonprofit social service organization with hopes for a national network. ChorusCares is the brainchild of Cris and her partner and manager, Judy Werle, who see a huge hole in the health aid networks for Lesbians and Transgender people, particularly around catastrophic illness and aging issues.

Tenderness helps Phillip Morris rise above crass jokes

I Love You Phillip Morris Opens December 17 After multiple distribution delays and rumors about the editing of “graphic homosexual sex” scenes, I Love You Phillip Morris finally arrives in theatres. The big question is: Is the film worth the wait? The answer, for the most part, is yes.

This Queer – as in odd, as in Gay – comedy is based on a strange but true story of Steven Russell, a con man who goes to great lengths to keep his lover – the Phillip Morris of the title (Ewan McGregor) – happy. And just like its hero, this wildly uneven film tries especially hard to please as well.

A politically incorrect comedy, a Gay love story, a character study, and a Jim Carrey vehicle all in one, the film shouldn’t work, but somehow it does.

I Love You Phillip Morris opens with Steven as a young boy being told he is adopted. The news prompts him to become a cop so he can find his birth mother. However, Steven discovers that he is better at manipulating the law from the criminal side than enforcing it. He is soon spurred to live a life of fraud and crime. But as Steven is wont to do in narrating his remarkable story, this is getting ahead of things.

Early in the film, Steven admits that he is a Gay man. His decision to live openly and not lie about his life prompts him to divorce his God-loving wife (Leslie Mann), move to South Beach, and get a hunky boyfriend (Rodrigo Santoro) and two cute dogs.

But Steven soon acknowledges, “Being Gay is really expensive.” So he initiates “slip and fall” suits to reap false insurance claims, and eventually lands in jail.

During a prison fight, Steven spots Phillip Morris and falls for him instantly. Their love, it seems, is “destiny,” and Steven starts

manipulating the system to exchange love letters with Phillip. Eventually he coordinates Phillip sharing a cell with him, and the lovers commit to sharing the rest of their lives together.

Once Steven and Phillip are released, they continue their relationship, and get a house together. However, Steven supports their domestic happiness by secretly continuing his extravagant cons, bilking companies out of money. When he is sent back to jail, Steven orchestrates an escape. This pattern of conning and escaping prison continues, making Phillip unhappy with all of Steven’s lying.

I Love You Phillip Morris is a fantastic – as in unbelievable, as in terrific – story, and

directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (of Bad Santa fame) tell it nimbly. The various comedic elements – from slapstick comic moments and sight gags to word play and double entendres – work because they are delivered at a fevered pitch.

Likewise, Carrey is encouraged to act unhinged throughout. He throws himself down escalators with gleeful abandon, and when he scams his way into a high-paying job, his expression is priceless. Viewers may share a feeling of complicity with Steven when he succeeds in his deceit. His criminal character is admirable if not lovable. Carrey, with his smarmy false charm, and his outsized personality is terrific in a role tailor-made

TRON: Legacy Opening December 17 Sam Flynn’s (Garrett Hedlund) father Kevin (Jeff Bridges), the visionary CEO of electronics giant ENCOM, disappeared right on the cusp of what he felt was a landmark achievement: a melding of the digital and physical worlds that would change everything.

Two decades later, trusted friend and colleague Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner) receives a page from his boss’ old office at the man’s rundown and long-closed video game parlor. He relays this information to Sam, and both of them quietly wonder what the heck is going on and whether or not Kevin is trying to let them know he’s still amongst the living.

What happens next won’t be too much of a surprise to anyone with an even passing knowledge of 1982’s TRON. Sam ends up inside a digital world, forced to play games by an iron-fisted dictator, knowing that losing means immediate destruction – even though he’s a flesh and blood “User” and the normal, run-of-the-mill “Program.”

But whereas the original was a relatively straightforward journey of a stranger in a strange land becoming the type of hero he never thought he could be, the long in coming sequel TRON: Legacy is nothing more

than a saga of a father and son reconnecting after decades apart, and all the whiz-bang visuals are just a neon illusion trying its best to hide a cliché and slightly sappy familial melodrama.

All of which would be perfectly fine if said whiz-bang served a greater purpose.

But at a certain point no amount of blue, red, orange, yellow, and white color motifs can hide a tired narrative that continually drifts off into sentimentality so ripe you can smell it three screening rooms away. The last hour of this 127-minute monster is unfocused and constantly careens wildly out of control.

It’s like the team of script and storywriters hadn’t the first clue as to where it was they wanted to go, only knowing they were crafting a direct sequel to the original even though the most people tend to recollect about it are the ahead-of-their-time visuals and plot points that were more prescient then that film’s director and co-writer Steven Lisberger ever could have known.

But the biggest problem here is that TRON: Legacy, for all its technical wizardry and showoff 3D visuals, is very, very boring. Its second hour is a turgid, dialogueheavy slog through family regrets and woes that had me slapping my forehead in frustration. Just when things should be building to something spectacular and mind-blowing, the film goes in the opposite direction, and while I laud the attempt to put character first

for his talents. He is completely convincing as a con man and a Gay man, who is willing to risk it all for his beloved.

That said, if viewers don’t like the actor’s manic antics or his sleazy character, I Love You Phillip Morris could feel like a prison sentence. Carrey is front and center for the whole film, and he neither gives up nor lets up.

Alas, McGregor, who is adorable here, is given too little screen time. The actor, who has a penchant for nudity, also keeps his and action second, when the people in question are this nondescript and one-dimensional, I’m not sure that’s such a great idea.

Not that Disney’s money isn’t up there on the screen for audiences to see and revel in. I will admit that (especially as a TRON fan; I was 5 when I first saw it and it’s held a place in my heart ever since) I was more than willing to give this sequel the benefit of the doubt. Starting with Sam’s initial foray onto The Grid, going through his first epic disc battle and culminating with a stunning race on the multi-tier Light Cycle track, director Joseph Kosinski and company had me ready and willing to fall under their spell. Heck, I was with this one for quite some time after that, enjoying the young hero’s first meeting with the mysterious Quorra (Olivia Wilde) while outright loving his initial reunion with his father Kevin, who was trapped in a digital world of his own creation.

Best of all is the introduction of a character called Zuse, a seemingly all-powerful program played to flamboyant excess by the great Michael Sheen. He’s like David Bowie, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, and Freddie Mercury all rolled into one ghostly white package. He prances. He dances. He hoots and he hollers. He chortles his way this way and that, owning the screen with a giddy flamboyance that’s both stunning and lively, setting the stage for the movie’s most explosive action sequence and allowing Sam, Quorra, and all the rest to strut their stuff mano y mano in a way that’s as thrilling as it is captivating.

From that point on, however, the film has to go back to fleshing out more of its sluggish narrative and suddenly everything flatlines. Little makes sense – what’s more, I’m not entirely sure if the filmmakers themselves cared if I did. Everyone talk, talk,

clothes on, disappointing viewers hoping for a big Gay sex scene between the leads.

(NOTE: The film’s buzzed-about “graphic sex scene” was likely excised. It was reportedly in the first 10 minutes of the film, before Phillip’s character is introduced. The scene in the print screened for this review did not seem especially graphic.)

While the Steven-Phillip relationship is touching at times – especially when they are separated – their romance is not the plot; it only drives it. Their kisses – often shown in silhouette – are sweet, while their discreet sex scenes are used to hang jokes. These can be amusing, as when the couple finally get some alone time, and declare, “Enough romance – let’s fuck!” or tasteless, as when Phillip spits rather than swallows Steven’s semen after an off-screen blowjob.

Given that I Love You Phillip Morris focuses so much on the love Steven has for his boyfriend, it makes sense that the film keeps Phillip’s character mainly on the sidelines. However, when Steven lies to his lover, and secretly implicates him in his crimes, it becomes tough to sympathize with the con man. But then the film sucker punches viewers just as it does Phillip with an unexpected reveal that may change everyone’s opinion.

All this manipulation is maddening for the characters and perhaps for the audience, but it actually serves the story.

What makes I Love You Phillip Morris work is that it succumbs to its own crazy, Steven-ish logic. In its weird way, the film actually explores issues of truth and trust and fidelity in Gay relationships. It is noteworthy that Steven never cheats on Phillip, but he also keeps his sexuality a secret from his employers. He also has a surprisingly healthy relationship with his ex-wife. This shows that despite his issues involving abandonment, identity, and honesty, Steven does have concerns for his loved ones. He just expresses it in a very outrageous, even unsettling way.

These tender sentiments help the film rise above its running dick jokes, and a Gay stereotype or two. The filmmakers ask audiences to care about and laugh both with and at these larger than life characters. Carrey’s strong performance and McGregor’s firm support allow this to happen.

I Love You Phillip Morris is certainly going to polarize audiences, but deserves to be seen – especially now that it is available.

(C) 2010 Gary M. Kramer talk, talking themselves to pieces to the point of tedium isn’t so much an option as it is a migraine-fueled requirement. The importance of TRON, a key figure in the first film, is downplayed to a ridiculous degree, while the culmination of Sam and Quorra’s odd little romance plays itself out in a way that is both laughable and head-scratching.

The real problem, though, is the one going on between father, son, and dad’s evil cybernetic doppelganger CLU (also Bridges, creepily de-aged looking all plastic and with jarringly dead eyes). The resolution to their story isn’t just maudlin; it’s so syrupy, the only thing missing is a stack of pancakes.

This is a movie that goes out, not with a bang, but instead a whimper, and though that might make T. S. Eliot proud, for the rest of us it is a massive disappointment.

I will admit that the film does look pretty darn great, and while the visuals won’t be as game-changing as the ones in the original, they are nearly worth the price of a matinee admission on their own. On top of that, Daft Punk’s exhilarating and kinetic score gives things an urgency and a momentum they never would have had otherwise, as the electronic wunderkinds manufacture a sonic tour de force I could listen to for hours on end.

It just isn’t enough. When I was 5, I could give TRON the benefit of the doubt, thin story and superficial characterization be damned. The sad truth is that 28 years later, I can’t do the same. TRON: Legacy tries to pull water from the same well, and does it with less pizzazz than its now low-tech predecessor. It is a movie that proves that lightening rarely, if ever, strikes twice, and that sometimes fond memories of a cherished favorite have no business being revisited nearly three decades later.

Celebrating 37 Years!

5th Avenue Theatre Through December 30 The words “You’ll shoot your eye out!” resonate in the minds of children for two reasons. The first is that this deadly prophecy has been recited many times to every child for various reasons. The other is the most commonly quoted line from the beloved holiday film, A Christmas Story.

Keeping with their tradition of presenting original musicals (they have produced five so far; two that have gone on to win Best Musical on Broadway), the 5th Avenue Theatre is doing their part for the holidays by presenting the classic movie as a new staged musical.

The year is 1970, and the audience is listening to (actually watching) a radio broadcast of the Jean Shepherd Show. With the help of radio sound effects and imagination, he retells a tale of Christmas in the 1940s, when a boy named Ralphie Parker was 10 years old and the only thing he wanted was a Red Ryder BB Gun. As the characters come to life, Ralphie seems to be able to express this wish to everyone except his parents. As the day grows closer, his quest and his desire for the one true gift grows greater. Along the way, he faces other challenges: His father, whose greatest concerns are keeping the neighbor’s dogs away and fixing the “flutter flooter” furnace. His mother’s obstacle is getting the house running smoothly, and his friends are all trying to avoid a schoolhouse bully. Every chance he gets, Ralphie tries

to express his desires for the BB gun only to hear the infamous phrase: “You’ll shoot your eye out!”

The boy Ralphie (Clarke Hallum) is the central character of both movie and stage production. His desires are something that everyone can identify with, even if they never celebrated Christmas in the 1940s.

His enthusiasm is contagious – if not a little over the top – but he’s not a ham; more like Canadian bacon. The performance is something to enjoy, and maybe even smile at as we recognize a bit of ourselves in his innocent delight and determination at the holiday gift he wants so badly. Ralphie’s father (John Bolton) is the “Old Man” who can fix anything with screaming unintelligible obscenities and amateur tinkering.

Bolton adds a dimension to the Old Man that is not as cartoonish or befuddled as the movie’s predecessor. His stern determination, whether right or wrong, is something that the audience smiles at, as we probably had a relative just like him.

Mother (Anne Allgood) is the most understated of the main characters. Her role is to take care of the house and those who live within. Her coaxing of the younger brother Randy (Matthew Lewis – incidentally, he unintentionally steals the scenes he’s in) to eat his food “like the piggies eat” is a wonderful piece of staging. Ms. Allgood brings the definition of nostalgic Americana to the stage that is needed to give this musical its stage legs, and she runs with it.

The other cast members all do a very good job, as well. The teacher (Carol Swarbrick) and the radio-show quartet (Jadd Davis, Candice Donehoo, Brandon O’Neill, and Billie Wildrick) are recognizable to Seattle

A Christmas Story a holiday gift

It’s a sticky situation for the kids at Grover Cleveland High School, especially for Flick (Dexter John son) who’s just made an important scientific discovery involving his tongue and a flagpole in A Christmas Story: The Musical!

theatergoers and give wonderful performances. Their characters and voices definitely add to the show, promoting the storyline instead of distracting. Even the children’s performances are done well, lacking in schmaltz and the cuteness that kids often demand from the stage. Director Eric Rosen definitely did a great job of controlling the challenges that acting with children can often create.

Fans of the 1983 film will not be disappointed by the stage production – after all, Peter Billingsley (the original film’s Ralphie) joined the production team. All the classic points are there, from the double-

dog dare to the introduction of “Chinese turkey.” The neighbor’s hounds (recreated with sound effects) and the visit to Santa (“I like Santa”) are both present, as is the now iconic pink bunny suit. The musical’s songs (penned by wunderkind Benj Pasek and Justin Paul) only add to this delightful classic.

The songs fit the time frame as well as being entertaining to the modern audience. If the 5th Avenue Theatre was trying to reinvent a new holiday classic, they did their job well.

Sleigh Bells reveal their year’s favorites Béla Fleck show incredible and holiday plans

by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer Béla Fleck Mercy’s friend Reality came with her to see Béla Fleck and the Flectones at Jazz Alley on December 12 because Cuteness had child care responsibilities. Reality liked the way Fleck reinterprets old chestnuts and makes them fresh – particularly Christmas music he’s tired of hearing the Muzak equivalents of.

Reality also found Victor Wooton, the bass player, amazing. His guitar work wasn’t in the background as most bass players are, but up front and deservedly earning more attention than usual.

Mercy felt Béla’s virtuoso banjo, Jeff Coffins’ delicious horns and woodwinds, and Wooton’s guitar exchanged licks at high levels of improvisation. Reality pointed out that that happened more in the live performances than on CDs. Another part of the band, Futureman – playing the synthaxe drumitar, an instrument of his own invention – added to the fun. The band has played together for 22 years. Reality says they clearly enjoy each other. “And respect each other,” Mercy added.

Their opening number, “Silent Night,” was a good example of the band taking a song apart and putting it back together again. A solo guitar medley of “Norwegian Wood,” “Sugar Plum Fairy,” “Merry Christmas to You,” and “Jingle Bells” made Reality whisper “Sweet.” Mercy agreed.

Fleck introduced their rendition of “Twelve Days of Christmas” by saying it was the most difficult piece they play – in fact, the most difficult thing ever done in Western music. They play each day in a different key and signature. Mercy was impressed.

Alash, the Siberian Tuvan throat singers, joined in and sang “Twelve Days of Christmas.” They also did a traditional piece that communicated nicely.

Béla played a beautiful original untitled solo. He got a standing ovation and brought out his band to play “What Child Is This” while the throat singers played another Siberian piece.

The Long Way Home Mercy had a lot of fun with Rachel Spangler’s new romance The Long Way Home.

The story deliberately reverses the classic Gay story about escaping small town mentalities to a big city. Raine St. James, famous Lesbian writer and speaker, returns to her hometown to teach at the local college.

Beth Devoroux has stayed there and become the college librarian. Attraction and love develop, along with some well-written sex scenes.

Metropolitan Opera broadcast of Don Carlo Mercy and her friends enjoyed very much the Metropolitan Opera broadcast of the rarely performed opera Don Carlo. Mercy enjoyed some girl to girl flirtation when Anna Smirnova in the role of Eboli sang to one of her servants, played by a woman in a pants role. Marina Poplavskaya was convincing as Elizabeth. Assonance said her face was as expressive as Betty Davis’. Ferruccio Furlanetto’s singing and acting were right on as King Phillip. Roberto Alagna’s voice was beautiful in the title role. His acting wasn’t up to the level of the rest of the cast. Mercy’s friend Kapacity pointed out that it is new to expect opera singers to act.

Mercy added that seeing faces close-up in the filmed performances makes the singers’ acting more visible.

Albert Rodriguez: What was some of your favorite music of the past year?

Alexis Krauss: The new Kanye, new Nicki Minaj. I was a big fan of the Yeasayer record [Odd Blood]. The new Crystal Castles stuff, Janelle Monae.

Rodriguez: Is all your holiday shopping done?

Derek E. Miller: I’ve shopped a lot for myself, but when I get home I gotta go get shit done.

Krauss: What? What’s shopping?

[Laughs.] We had like two days in Portland and I did get my mom some earrings.

Rodriguez: What are you guys gonna do for the holidays?

Krauss: Nothing. Just eat and see people that we haven’t seen. We never see our families.

Miller: I’m going to Florida, so I’m going to be on the beach.

Rodriguez: In Speedos?

Miller: [Grins.] Yes, absolutely.

Rodriguez: Where will you be on New Year’s Eve? Miller: Actually, we’re going to be in Australia. We’re playing 30 minutes after midnight.

Rodriguez: Do you get noticed at airports or on airplanes?

Miller: Today we stopped at a gas station and there’s this little kid running around with a Black Keys T-shirt on.

Krauss: He was like 8 years old and he runs up to me as I’m looking at sodas and goes, “Are you Sleigh Bells?” I was like, “What?!”

Miller: His name is Cutter – which has gotta be the hardest name ever for an 8 year old.

Krauss: [Laughs.] That was like the first time we’ve been recognized!

Rodriguez: What does 2011 look like?

Miller: Touring until August, then back in the studio September 1. It’s pretty much all mapped out already, which is crazy.

Rodriguez: When can we expect a headlining show in Seattle?

Krauss: End of April or early May. Miller: We’re still firming up details, but we’re going to do a co-headlining tour and come back to do our own shows.

Rodriguez: What do you like about Seattle?

Krauss: When I’m up here, it just feels much clearer and cleaner and less chaotic than New York. It’s still a city, so you can get what you want out of a city, in terms of culture, but there’s space. And I like the feeling of being so close to nature.

Rodriguez: How about a holiday greeting for your Gay fans here in Seattle?

Krauss: Merry fucking Christmas!

One of the year’s breakthrough acts is Sleigh Bells, a spunky electronic-hard rock duo from Brooklyn who’ve already landed on Spin magazine and NPR’s best album lists of 2010 – they easily made it onto mine, as well. While in Seattle a week ago to perform on a holiday radio show, Alexis Krauss and Derek E. Miller sat down with me to discuss things that tend to surface around this time of year. Yo-Yo, Schwarz, Shostakovich: An unbeatable combo

Schwarz can do anything he sets his mind to, and for some reason the substance of this composer’s works grabs his devotion like few others. (Mahler, Janacek, Bartok … these usually pull excellent work from Schwarz.)

From the opening orchestral response to Ma’s first notes (upon which the whole movement is based), the players seemed instantly to be of a single mind. Not just a bunch of professionally competent musicians, but an organic whole, driven by the clear story they were trying to tell. The contrast to everything that preceded was a shock. Suddenly there were nuances, meanings whispered darkly, and an energy whose power threatened to explode the obvious restraint imposed by the brilliance of the conductor’s understanding of the internal conflict that was scarcely hidden behind the ironic buoyancy of the tune.

I have not often praised principal horn, John Cerminaro, but his particular sound was perfectly appropriate to this music. The horn has a huge role here, and Cerminaro reveled in his duets with Ma’s cello. They had a kind of romp and worked perfectly together.

Everyone acknowledges Yo-Yo Ma’s mastery. His instrument seemed but an extension of himself. His commitment to this great music showed on his face and in his sound. The audience was attentive and silent, even through the long, slow “Cadenza” that eventually quickens and leads into the final movement. The ovation he received upon entering the stage was repeated at the close. No longer a young man (b. 1955), Ma showed that his musical motivation has not diminished. If anything, his passion seemed greater than earlier. May he play on for decades to come!

Yo-Yo Ma with the Seattle Symphony December 7 Benaroya Hall Gerard Schwarz does Shostakovich well – so well, in fact, that his powerful control in the Shostakovich “Cello Concerto No. 1” threw everything else in this concert into stark contrast. The Tchaikovsky “Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture” was thrown at us with energetic but slapdash loudness, lacking warmth and orchestral balance.

The “Suite from ‘Der Rosenkavalier,’ Op. 59” was similarly unpolished, although it did have more warmth and schmaltz than Schwarz’s leaden performance of the opera at Seattle Opera years ago.

The concert began with a world premiere performance of a piece commissioned by the SSO to commemorate Gerard Schwarz’s 25th and final year as music director. Composed by Bernard Rands (b. 1934), it was skillfully orchestrated and blessedly short.

Free of the all-too-frequent over-orchestration of many contemporary compositions, it nonetheless did not engage these ears beyond some novel juxtapositions of instruments and a certain orchestral dialogue. A choir made up of one of each of the primary brass instruments engaged the strings in an intensely layered conversation of sounds.

Mildly interesting and seemingly well performed, it did not overstay its welcome.

But the whole reason this one-night-only concert was an instant sell-out was the appearance of Yo-Yo Ma as cellist for the Shostakovich. Much as I like Ma, the reason I am reviewing this evening is the almost mystical connection Schwarz seems to have with the music of Dmitri Shostakovich.

Their involvement with Seattle Women’s Chorus and with other choruses around the country in recent years also showed them that those women lucky enough to be connected to choruses often had a kind of network to turn to in the event of breast and other cancer attacks, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and other illnesses. Chorus members provide transportation, food, and handholding when necessary, like at the doctor.

A model for what ChorusCares could become is Musicares, developed by the music industry, and housed at the Grammy organization (http://www2.grammy.com/musicares/) that supports musicians and “covers a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies.”

“Churches do the same kind of thing, but what’s our church? Oft times, many of us have been turned away from church. It’s hard to think of a group that would be more disenfranchised as Lesbians,” asserts Judy Werle.

Werle thinks that ChorusCares could be a kind of clearinghouse for various services to be donated, like housecleaning and repair people who will donate services. “We have pieces of the puzzle, but we don’t have enough community. This is a way of beginning to access Lesbian and Lesbian-friendly populations. Women come [to concerts] and say, ‘We don’t have community anymore.

When are you coming back?’ In some cities, the only thing that brings a Lesbian community out is the women’s chorus or a concert
