Dina Martina’s Xmas show is laugh-out-loud mayhem

The Dina Martina Christmas Show Re-bar Through December 30 It’s that time of year again, when families decorate the Christmas tree, children write letters to Santa Claus, and Dina Martina shocks the hell out of everybody with her laugh-out-loud, derailed train ride of a show. That’s right, Seattle, she’s back – The Dina Martina Christmas Show has returned to Re-bar.

In what has become a shockingly absurd but oh-so-funny Seattle tradition, The Dina Martina Christmas Show is a holiday staple. I brought a friend along to see the December 4 show just to watch the look of complete disbelief flash across his face within seconds of Miss Martina making her entrance.

This was the second time I had the pleasure of watching the comedic genius, and the second time I left with sore cheeks from laughing all night. Christmas has never looked so bad, but felt so good.

Spellbinding Princess and the Frog absolute magic

which puts her restaurateur dreams in jeopardy. Things get even stranger when a frog stumbles into her room claiming to be Prince Naveen, asking for a single kiss so his humanity can be restored.

Things never progress quite the way you think they’re going to in The Princess and the Frog, Walt Disney Pictures’ first hand-drawn animated film since 2004’s Home on the Range. I’m not saying there aren’t happy endings; this is a fairy tale, after all. And I’m also not implying that friendships aren’t forged, love isn’t found or that good does not triumph over evil – again, fairy tale. Disney movie.

Radio City Christmas Spectacular Paramount Theater Through January 3 The very name “Radio City Rockettes” summons images of a row of in-synch, toetapping, high-kicking, beautiful women.

Their association with Christmas is almost as prevalent as Santa Claus himself. As the Rockettes get ready to celebrate their 76th year, their Christmas Spectacular promises to be delightful and entertaining to all. In preparation, the Seattle Gay News caught up with two-year Rockette member, Talese Peterson Hunt.

Eric Andrews-Katz: How long does the average dancer stay with the Rockettes?

Talese Peterson Hunt: That’s hard to say as it’s different for everybody. There are some women who have been here for 10-15 years, and others who will only stay a year or so before moving on. It’s different because of our diverse backgrounds, and we’re all on our own paths. I’d like to stay as long as I can.

Andrews-Katz: What is the average age and age range of a Rockette?

Hunt: That also varies a lot. You have to

be at least 18 years old, and as far as a maximum, well, a lady never likes to reveal her age, but anyone can do it as long as her body holds up.

Andrews-Katz: Where do you stand in the 5’5” to 5’10” height restriction rule?

Hunt: I’m 5’9.5”. In Seattle, I’ll be one of the center girls. The tallest women are in the center and it cascades out so that it gives the illusion of us all being the same height.

Andrews-Katz: Is the signature high kick part of the audition process, or is it taught?

Hunt: We have to do kicks at the audition as well as being proficient in jazz and tap combinations. The auditions are a twoday process and then a series of cuts to make sure the technique can be handled. The last thing taught is the high kick, and we are required to kick toe-to-eye. This also helps add to the illusion of line precision.

Andrews-Katz: In modern controversy, the Rockettes have been accused of perpetrating a stereotype much like the Barbie doll. How do you respond to that?

Hunt: As part of our job, we have to stay physically fit. We are into an elite athleticism and need to maintain it more so than the average person. We have to do strength training and cardiovascular exercises. As a Rockette, I’m proud of being part of a tradition that’s been a national treasure for over 75 years. These women are all from different backgrounds and all are classy and smart. I feel that people who think we “perpetrate a stereotype” are maybe missing what the Rockettes represent.

Andrews-Katz: Has anyone ever tripped and brought down the line?

Hunt: Not that I heard of, but it is a live show and you never know what’s going to happen. At a recent show, someone lost a shoe during the kick line, and since we do use live animals during the nativity scene, it just becomes one of the joys of live theater.

Andrews-Katz: The Rockettes do a lot of civic services. What events do you have planned for Seattle?

Andrews-Katz: What is your favorite part of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular?

Hunt: I really love the “Christmas in NY” number, with the traditional red outfits. It’s kind of the iconic Rockette number, with more high kicks than any other in the show.

It’s also the most tiring, but I love it because it shows what the Rockettes represent.

Originally founded by Russell Market, they were brought to NYC by S.L. “Roxy” Rothafel who called them his “Roxyettes.” What started as a 16-woman kick line quickly grew into an instant sensation, becoming the current 36-member Rockettes. Since 1932, more than 3,000 women have high kicked among the ranks of the world-famous troupe. The Rockettes were featured at the 2001 presidential inauguration, and are a yearly staple at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

by Eric Andrews-Katz SGN Contributing Writer Carol Swarbrick (married name Dries) has become the darling actress of the 5th Avenue Theatre. She’s performed in numerous shows there as well as being a veteran of television, movies and The Great White Way. Her face should be easily recognized

by Seattle theatergoers, and her name in the program is a potential promise of good things to come. Returning to the 5th Avenue Theatre’s presentation of Irving Berlin’s classic White Christmas, Ms. Swarbrick recreates the role of Martha Watson, an innkeeper’s concierge with a heart of gold.

Eric Andrews-Katz: You’ve worked on television, the stage and the big screen.

Which venue do you prefer?

Carol Swarbrick: Definitely the stage; you get that interaction with the audience right away. It’s more challenging because of that and more satisfying as well. It’s live. It’s now. There is no safety net like with TV or film, no taping it again. It’s really fun to do a sitcom with a live audience because you get that live interaction, plus, if you do make a mistake, you can retake.

Andrews-Katz: What was your first show for the 5th Avenue Theatre?

Swarbrick: A Day in Hollywood… in 1982 on a national tour. The productions at the 5th Avenue are absolutely brilliant.

As far as most are concerned [in the professional theater community], the 5th Avenue is Broadway.

Andrews-Katz: Since 1982, you’ve performed in shows like Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Hello Dolly and many others. What was your favorite role?

Swarbrick: It would have to be a threeway tie. There’s no way I can compare

the roles of Mame (title role), Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd) and George’s Mother from Sunday in the Park With George.

Andrews-Katz: From your stage roles, with which do you most identify?

Swarbrick: It would have to be Martha Watson from White Christmas. As she says, “Let me sing, and I’m happy.”

Andrews-Katz: You’ve performed on Broadway in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Side By Side By Sondheim, among others. Do you prefer to work in lighter or more complex musicals?

Swarbrick: I prefer more complex musicals. It’s more challenging and more rewarding. The depths that I got to delve into for George’s Mother has been untapped in any other show I’ve done. Playing in Side

By Side, I get to sing “Anita” from West Side Story, a role that I wouldn’t get to normally sing. You’ll never plunder all the depths in Sondheim’s music. The man is clever so there is cleverness to his lyrics.

Andrews-Katz: You’ve mentioned what you like the most about Sondheim’s music.

What do you like the least about singing his compositions?

Swarbrick: I can’t think of anything that I don’t like about performing Sondheim. It’s wholly satisfying.

Andrews-Katz: Why do you think White Christmas holds up so well through the years?

Swarbrick: David Armstrong said it best three years ago at the premier mounting of this show at the 5th Avenue: “It’s just a happy show. We get to be involved in a happy show.”

Andrews-Katz: What differences will the audience notice between the film and stage versions?

Swarbrick: My character Martha sings two songs and there’s a hint of romance

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Death/Sex Balagan Theatre Through December 19 Is it doldrums time? Too much sugary holiday fare? Does Balagan Theatre have the fix for you! They presented this smorgasbord of six devilishly fun one-acts last year, and had such a good time that they’re doing it again.

These are all original short plays, mostly by local writers. First up is I Saw Mommy

by Eric Ankrim. You can fill in the second part of the phrase, “kissing Santa Claus.”

Susan Graf plays a very sexed-up 8, 9 and 10-year-old with a very strange mother (Terri Weagant), and a Santa (Sam Hagen) who’s going through divorce.

Then there’s the enigmatic Pillow by Frederick Stroppel. Amelia Meckler is a sexually conservative Wilma to Betty Campbell’s hotto-trot older lady Janice.

Wilma could stand to loosen up, but maybe not all the way to Janice’s lifestyle.

Consumption, Consummation by Nik Perleros and Davey Young gives us marvelously costumed praying mantises, as Sam Hagen and Heather Gautschi prepare to have sex for the first – and maybe last –

time.

The Debutante by M.J. Sieber is a spy spoof, with a young woman (Nicole Fierstein) infiltrating the upper-crust set and mimicking their infantile behavior while feeding information to our government – we think. It takes the question, “What would you do for your country?” and turns it on its ear. With support from Ashley Bagwell and Jenn Kennelly.

between Martha and the General, which weren’t in the movie. The song “Snow” has been opened up for the stage to allow the cast to join in instead of just the principle characters.

Andrews-Katz: What’s next on your list after White Christmas?

Swarbrick: I’m not exactly sure. There’s a contract in the offering, but the ink hasn’t dried. Hopefully I’ll know before this goes to print. I find myself in a wonderful place in my life. I don’t have to scurry quite as much, career-wise, as I did in the past 35 years. I’m certainly not retiring, but I get to do the work I want to do and that’s a huge blessing in the theater.

Andrews-Katz: What roles would you like to play?

Swarbrick: I’d like to play Joanne in Company. I think I can still pull that off.

Also, Carlotta in Follies. I’ve already played Phyllis, but I’d like to try Carlotta’s part.

Then there’s Norma Desmond, but I think Lloyd Webber pulled the rights on that, so that may be out.

Leading up the end is an enigmatic piece called From the Heart by Katinka Lincoln.

This exchange of Christmas presents between Tim (Nik Perleros) and Sheila (Terri Weagant) gives a new meaning to “giving someone their heart’s desire.”

It’s a bawdy, sexually explicit evening to enjoy for the holidays. If you just haven’t been able to pull yourself out of the house to get to any of the regularly scheduled holiday shows, you will probably find at least a few big laughs in this, so go on over, grab a little Christmas cheer at their bar, and have some fun. meet Betty and Judy Haynes (Christina Saffran Ashford and Taryn Darr). In true ‘50s Hollywood fashion, they fall in love and change all of their plans so they can work together at a ski lodge for the holidays.

What they don’t know is that the Ski Lodge in Pine Tree, Vermont is going through a heat wave, and there’s no snow.

Inn owner General Henry Waverly (Frank Corrado) is a semi-melancholy man unhappy about the weather and non-existing business at his establishment who also happens to be the boys’ former commander. Faster than you can say, “Let’s put on a show in the barn” (you’re way ahead of me), the group decides to boost their friend’s morale and reunite the General’s men for one last hurrah.

The lead roles are done well without being shadows of their cellular predecessors.

Michael Gruber’s crooning style embraces each song, especially the softer ones like

“Counting your Blessings” or “Blue Skies.”

Greg McCormick Allen’s dancing is pure enjoyment. He moves around the stage with an agility that seems to come naturally.

It’s the strength in the female leads that carry this production. The duet “Sisters” by Christina Saffran Ashrod and Taryn Darr is not only comical, but a listening delight as the two women harmonize perfectly. While it’s unfortunate that Taryn Darr doesn’t get any solos, the song “Love, You Didn’t Do Right By Me” allows Christina Saffran Ashrod’s voice to ring out with heart-sinking sincerity before meshing into a beautiful duet with Michael Gruber’s “How Deep is the Ocean.” The role of Martha Watson (Carol Swarbrick) has been expanded from the innkeeper’s concierge and comical busybody and now includes a song-and-dance history and an additional Irving Berlin song that is belted out with comic style and wonderful voice. This character not only adds humor to the show, she also adds in the hint of a romance with the General.

Most of the songs have transferred to the musical, including “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing,” “Snow,” “Sisters” (both versions), and of course the title song, among others. The controversial “I Love a Minstrel Show” number was cut from the stage production, not having survived the politically correct views of the 21st century. The songs are all toe-tapping and will bring a smile to a child’s face while being a fond reminiscence for anyone older.

At the end, the audience is invited to join in singing the title song before being lightly dusted with snow. No matter how you look at it, this show is a treat. It’s unabashed escapism and pure entertainment.

The original film starred Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye as the two showmen (Wallace and Davis) and Vera Ellen and Rosemary Clooney as the Haynes Sisters. The veteran character actress Mary Wicke created the role of Martha Watson, while the choreography (uncredited) goes to the great impresario Bob Fosse. It became a box office hit, ranking it the second highest earning film of 1954.

That’s unfortunate because there’s a lot going on in this weird remake of an odd original. Director Werner Herzog is still obsessed with the struggle between humankind and the forces

of nature, this time with his darkly arcane sense of humor in full play. Nicholas Cage plays crazy with his usual crazy verve, multiplied by 10.

The Bad Lieutenant: PCNO was released November 25. Nicholas Cage stars as a drug-addled cop fighting crime in the Big Easy as the city attempts to resurrect itself in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. as it helps. Where the political machinations are downright fascinating, and while one cannot help but be moved by Mandela’s strength of will and almost miraculous foresight, whenever the film does turn to the rugby pitch it all becomes far less interesting. The scenes of on-field action aren’t exciting, and anyone new to the sport isn’t going to learn anything to help them to make sense of it. Even though the fate of an entire nation more or less rests on the outcome, the championship game is surprisingly inert, and while a few of the rougher moments do pack the requisite punch, the majority sadly reeks of platitude and cliché.

Thankfully those are complaints I cannot levy against the remainder of the film.

Watching Mandela at work, observing the relation-

ships between his staff, his entourage and his security team, seeing him take to his task with the tenacity of a lion and the sensitivity of a lamb is fascinating. For those unfamiliar with how South Africa was able to make such a startling transformation after decades of violence and despair, much can be learned here. It is spellbinding stuff, and as soon as the movie was over I walked right into Barnes and Nobles and purchased a copy of Carlin’s book, eager to learn more.

A case can be made that Eastwood’s celebrated (and sometimes notorious) restraint and attention to detail work against him a little bit in this instance. The pacing is a tad lackadaisical, and while scenes of Mandela’s family strife are intriguing, I’m not sure they’re necessary. Many times Peckham’s screenplay delicately hints at things the majority of viewers do not need spelled out, only to revisit them in tedious detail later on. While I was never frustrated, I do admit to wishing now and again the movie would just get on with it.

On the flip side, both Damon and Freeman deliver exemplary performances, and even if the accents aren’t perfect, the way they dig deep inside their respective characters certainly is. Freeman, in particular, doesn’t just rise to the occasion; he embodies it whole, taking one of the most recognizable figures of the last century and making me feel like I was seeing him for the very first time.

Overall, with Invictus, Eastwood not only once again goes in an unexpected direction, he also adds insight to a historical event many know far too little about. Once translated, the title means “unconquered,” and when you consider everything South Africa has been through, I cannot think of a better one.

This movie is about more than winning rugby games, about more than athletes and politicians working together for a common goal. It is, in the end, about a people coming together to look hardship and tragedy in the eye and rise above for the common good. If that’s not a victory worth celebrating, I’m not sure what else would be.

Invictus Opening DECember 11 Realizing the power sport can hold over people, newly elected South African President Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) comes to the conclusion that his country’s rugby team, the green and gold Springboks – adored by whites but despised by blacks – need to win the 1995 World Cup. It’s a tall order, but by enlisting the aid of the team’s young captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) he’s confident a positive outcome can be reached, and under the banner “One Country, One Team” the duo hope to erase the specter of apartheid for good.

As a director, Clint Eastwood has never been one to stick to conventional wisdom.

The man became an icon thanks to his turns in Western classics like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and hard-boiled police thrillers like Dirty Harry, and while he’s made sure to play in those genres behind the camera, many films like High Plains Drifter, Tightrope and Unforgiven go along way to deconstructing the Eastwood mythos.

But he hasn’t stopped there. The filmmaker has looked at obsession both inside and out of the Hollywood jungle in White Hunter, Black Heart, has attempted a warts and all biopic of jazz great Charlie Parker with Bird, tackled controversy by examining euthanasia in Million Dollar Baby and somehow made Robert James Waller’s soapy The Bridges of Madison County one of the purest depictions of love and sacrifice I’ve ever seen. Now pushing 80, he’s embarked on his most ambitious slate of films yet, recently dissecting both sides of WWII with Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of Our Fathers, crafting a 1930s Los Angeles mystery with

Changeling, and pushing the limits of racial intolerance while also further commenting on his own cinematic persona with Gran Torino.

Now comes the basedon-fact political drama Invictus, an underdog sports story more interested in how a country can unite after decades of intolerance and bigotry than it is in which way the ball bounces or who scores the winning points.

This film is a The Queen-like saga of a political leader trying to make the right moves when the wrong ones would be a heck of a lot easier, where bowing to conventional wisdom would have split people apart instead of bringing them together.

This take by Eastwood and screenwriter Anthony Peckham (Don’t Say a Word), working from John Carlin’s book Playing the Enemy, is an interesting one.

Where lesser filmmakers would have played up the sports angle, gone out of their way to turn this into a South African rugby version of Hoosiers or Remember the Titans, these two instead focus almost entirely upon Mandela and his decision making, the outcome on the field a virtual afterthought.

I’ve always considered Herzog an amazing auteur. His early narrative work (Aguirre, The Wrath of God, Fitscarraldo, and Nosferatu the Vampyre stand out) is terrific, and Herzog has always been an excellent documentarian. If you doubt the latter, check out My Best Fiend, Grizzly Man, or Encounters at the End of the World.

To recap: I think Herzog is an excellent documentarian who has made a number of fascinating narrative films.

That brings us back to The Bad Lieutenant: PCNO. This is a good movie. This is a fun movie. This is a movie with a wicked sense of humor. Nicholas Cage is over-thetop as the crack-smoking, vicodin-munching, egomaniacal cop with a gambling problem and a hooker girlfriend. He also has a fluid moral code that slides easily between

situational and antinomian ethics. Frighteningly, the bad lieutenant never concerns himself with the limitations of legalistic ethics – not the sensibility we prize in our peace officers.

The bad lieutenant’s antics take place in the heart of the devastation that used to be New Orleans. Herzog draws a rotting carcass of a city infested with scaly creatures and overrun by swampy vegetation. The topiary doesn’t stand a chance against the forces of nature, a familiar Herzog theme.

We humans can keep these forces at bay for a while, but in the end (in Herzog’s world), nature always wins.

Though Cage gifts us with a dicey performance brimming with crazy, it’s the supporting actors who do the best work here.

Xzibit, rapper/actor/host of Pimp My Ride, is surprisingly awesome as the lieutenant’s drug dealing ally. Lucius Bastion, Jennifer Coolidge, and Tony Bentley all turn in great performances in small but pivotal roles. And Brad Dourif (Grima Wormtongue from Lord of the Rings) gets a shot at better material than he’s accustomed to and he makes the most of it.

That brings us back to the original question: Why hasn’t this movie gotten better press? We have a film controversially based on a character from another film that’s a cult classic (the original Bad Lieutenant, starring Harvey Keitel) directed by a gifted, if quirky director with a spotty history of narrative filmmaking. We have an A-list star known for a few odd choices in movie roles, some of which work (Wild at Heart) and some of which don’t (Ghost Rider, Face/Off). We have an excellent supporting cast, a compelling setting, and story that holds up nicely even if it makes you feel yucky inside. So, why hasn’t this movie gotten better press?

The bottom line: I don’t think folks know what to do with Herzog or Cage. They are both enigmatic characters in the movie world. The film itself is enigmatic from its inception (is it a remake, a revision, a sequel?). Frankly, I don’t know what to make of it myself. I only know the flick was riotous good fun and that you should check it out quickly because I don’t think it will be around much longer.

Directors Ron Clements and John Musker were part of the reason for the studio’s hand-drawn rebirth in the 1990s, helming such winning favorites as The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid and Aladdin.

They were, however, also part of its downfall, and while the mostly second-rate Hercules made money, the pair’s terrible Treasure Planet was the nail CGI fanatics and traditional animation naysayers were ready to pound into the art form’s coffin.

Thankfully Pixar chief and current head of Disney animation John Lasseter wasn’t quite ready to bury this form of filmmaking quite yet, and trusted the duo could rise to former heights and once again cement the studio (sorry, Hayao Miyazaki) as kings of the hand-drawn jungle. He knew that, not only was the art form itself in jeopardy, so was the studio’s highly cherished legacy, and if Clements and Musker failed, the chances they’d be returning to it any time soon were pretty much nil.

Not only does the pair rise to the occasion, they arguably exceed expectations to the point that their three prior successes pale in comparison. This movie doesn’t just concern itself with magic; it is magic, pure joy and rapturous glee oozing off of every frame. It is beautifully realized on a multitude of levels; the same dedication to character and script development Lasseter perfected with Pixar blissfully on display here. The directors balance everything from comedy to music to drama to romance with grace and sincerity, and when it was over I wasn’t sure if I was crying because I was moved by the story, or if I was just happy the movie was such a marvelous success.

There’s more, much more. I could go on all day about Randy Newman’s (Toy Story) superb music and songs or the outstanding vocal work. I could talk about how the animation ranks as some of the finest the studio has ever produced, or how certain scenes cast that same wondrous spell as the “Be My Guest” sequence from Beauty and the Beast or the climactic battle between Maleficent and Charming in Sleeping Beauty.

I could speak about all that and more, but I’m not going to. The truth is that this is one of the few motion pictures that speaks for itself better than I ever could. The simple act of seeing it with one’s own eyes is the only way to know just how perfect it truly is. In my opinion, The Princess and the Frog isn’t just wonderful, it is another in a long line of traditionally animated Disney masterpieces.

Astronaut and Apollo 9 Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweikart was temporarily stranded outside the space capsule in 1969 and had a transforming encounter looking down at Earth. In 1977, Schweikart served as California Governor Jerry Brown’s assistant for science and technology, later becoming the state’s commissioner of energy in 1979.

This documentary is not a grim recitation of our failures, but rather a wake-up call for all of us.

Hopefully it will soon become available on DVD so that every school in America can show it to their students, and every educator lead discussions about Earth Day, what it means and stands for, and why it’s urgent that we all awaken.

In some ways, the struggle for Gay Rights has undergone, and continues to undergo, a similar process, with narrow-minded foes blocking the way to human evolution and understanding. In each struggle, some progress is made and some progress is reversed, and much more is needed.

Earth Days opens at the Varsity Theater in Seattle for one week on December 11. Denis Hayes is scheduled to appear in person at the early evening showings on December 11 and December 12 for a post-screening discussion.

As Al Gore and David Suzuki point out, we may be past the point of no return on what Adlai Stevenson called “spaceship earth.”

It’s an extraordinary story of the era’s pioneers, including former Secretary of the Interior Steward Udall, biologist and Population Bomb author Paul Ehrlich, Whole Earth Catalog founder Stewart Brand, astronaut Rusty Schweikart, and renewable energy pioneer Hunger Lovins. There’s archival footage most of us have never seen before, and will enjoy.

In the 1950s, a small group of scientists began documenting the impact of technology on our planetary ecosystem. The post-World War II dream of a better world through science, technology and economic growth – in short, the American dream – turned into a nightmare.

Earth’s human population doubled, then doubled again. The mass starvation predicted earlier continued to be a discussion point. Ninety percent of our rivers became heavily contaminated with industrial pollution, agricultural runoff, and human waste.

Dangerous pesticides such as DDT brought the American bald eagle, our national symbol, to the brink of extinction!

Some industrialists seemed to respond, but failed. Ford hoped to be mass-producing electric cars by 1975 – which still hasn’t happened.

President Jimmy Carter outlined a plan to reduce oil imports and improve energy efficiency. He installed solar panels on the roof of the White House in 1979, and invested in renewable energy research which he hoped would allow for 20% of US energy to come from renewable resources by the year 2000.

When Ronald Reagan became president, he had the solar panels removed from the White House, and cut crucial energy efficiency funding by 80%.

“After the War Room shut down, there was nowhere for these kids to go,” Kauer explained. But Keith Christensen, the owner of the Eagle, came to the rescue. Christensen wanted to make some changes at the Eagle, and figured “who could pull it off better than glam kids?”

Starting next month, the Eagle plans to have a weekly “Original Eagle” night, tentatively set for Sundays. But Kauer wants all leather daddies to know that they are not only welcome at Fringe; they’re wanted.

“Wear nothing but a leather tip on your penis – you’re wanted here,” said Kauer.

“I love these kids,” said one veteran Eagle patron.

Hot go-go boys and girls can be expected every Friday, along with regular DJ, DJ NARK (Kauer). Many guest DJs are already lined up, including DJ Skiddle, DJ Kendall and Jackie Hell. Fringe is flat-out hot, and has a different unique theme every week.

about this performance except for the perfection of lyrical line, the flawless overall arch to each movement, and the absolute loveliness of the opening “Adagio sustenuto.” Indeed, one could not have asked for a more perfectly shaped and executed performance. The only thing lacking was personality.

The second half consisted of the ballet, “Romeo and Juliet, Op. 75” of Prokofiev (1935). Again, everything was fine technically in this brilliant score. There were perhaps a few missed notes here and there. But where was the delight, the wit? Again, I felt a lack of personality.

Perhaps I was just not tuned in. After all, this artist sells out houses all over the world (although Meany was, at best, three-quarters full); and the audience gave her a warm reception. Yet, I was not moved to seek her out for future recitals. She is, of course, very young.

Piano Recital by Lise de la Salle NOVEMBER 24 Meany Hall Lise de la Salle is a master of the keyboard. I’m not sure she is yet (at age 21) a master of communication. She is a very serious musician, hardly smiling during the whole evening. Her posture was perfectly straight, and her mannerisms were limited to occasionally conducting the music with her left hand, when free.

She began this recital with Beethoven’s “Piano Sonata No. 26, ‘Les Adieux.’” While there were not any technical flaws I could mention, I didn’t sense the composer’s passion. Sure, there were all the dramatic dynamic and rhythmic contrasts, but the piano sounded cold. I didn’t feel Beethoven’s presence.

Since then, Dina Martina has sold out performances on both coasts and everywhere in between. There are no words to describe just who or what Dina Martina is to a person who has not yet had the pleasure of viewing the entertainer’s show. My advice is this: Don’t try to explain it. Just take them along, sit back and enjoy every second as they turn to you and ask, “What is going on?” With a little luck, maybe, just maybe, you will be able to say, “I don’t know” through fits of laughter.

For true Dina Martina fans, I am happy to report that all of your favorite Dina moments are in the show. From her trademark unnecessary dance moves and ridiculous costumes to her excruciating singing as she murders one song after another and gives out unwanted gifts (that seem direct from the island of misfits), Dina’s got it covered.

Accompanying Dina Martina once again is musical director Chris Jeffries, who brings much-needed normalcy to the show.

The contrast between Jeffries’ beautiful music and Dina’s singing is a perfect fit.

This year, Dina Martina has a few surprises in store for the audience. I don’t dare give them away in print, but I can tell you this much: there is new fabulous merchandise, Dina plays an instrument, and there’s something very different about a piece of her wardrobe.

The Dina Martina Christmas Show plays Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. until December 30 at Rebar. Drink specials are available and seating begins one hour prior to show time. Tickets are $20 and are available at Brown Paper Tickets.
