Lady GaGa August 21 Tacoma Dome Lady GaGa’s much-awaited “Monster Ball” rolled through the Tacoma Dome last weekend, and it was nothing short of ballsy. GaGa brought a show that was as gutsy as it was eyepopping and inspiring.

When the lights dimmed promptly at 9 p.m., a semi-circular blue curtain was drawn revealing the pop icon in Warholesque poses on a massive screen. This caused delirium amongst the 20,000 onlookers, especially those on the main floor, who made an art of bouncing up and down while recording the action on their electronic devices.

Adding to the challenge of selecting this year’s victors is that the overall list of nominees is considerably strong – primarily Supporting Actor-Comedy, Lead ActressDrama and Drama Series. This could be the first time in Emmy history that two openly Gay actors, Jane Lynch and Neil Patrick Harris, take home trophies in respective supporting categories. I don’t suggest using my choices for any contests – do your own research – but Jane Lynch here’s how I do in Glee think it’ll pan out Sunday evening. The Moondoggies

The Moondoggies, signed to a subsidiary label of Sub Pop and already enlisting the assistance of a major national firm to handle press for their forthcoming album, Tidelands.

The buzz out there is that the new material is amazing and will give The Moondoggies the outer-Northwest exposure they’ve been hoping for – something lead singer Kevin Murphy is optimistic about. I caught up with him this week, as he wrapped up a shift at his day job – it pays the bills, for now – and here’s what the frontman of The Moondoggies shared with me when we met in The Music Lounge.

Rugged Centurion a boldly brutal Roman epic

I’d cough up $12 just to watch Christensen sweat in a wife-beater (which he does). He’s also rock-solid as the man with the plan.

Don’t let Michael Ealy’s (Jake Attica) blue eyes fool you; he can act.

He plays the big brother and skeptic who has the most to lose. In the name of brotherhood, he agrees to go on one last job and all his character’s doubt and frustration comes through in every frame.

Matt Dillon (Jack Welles) is always good, and makes the most out of a fairly standard cop character with a personal life in shambles, an unhealthy obsession with his job, and a murky line between right and wrong. Jay Hernandez and Paul Walker are pretty and give solid performances that are slightly overshadowed by even better actors.

The real superlatives must be saved for T.I. (Ghost). T.I. is nothing but fun as the gang member left behind on a job five years earlier who gets out of prison and looks to use the contacts he made there to pull off one last job, a score so big that the boys just can’t refuse even though all signs point to no. T.I. is easy on the eyes and authentic without becoming a gangsta cartoon character.

He keeps you guessing right up to the end.

This is no easy task, because if you aren’t distracted by his good looks and seamless acting, you’ll figure out how the story ends rather quickly.

Is Takers destined to be a classic? Nope.

But it is a fun toss-off flick with a pack of handsome actors that deserve a better film.

Takers Opening August 27 The audience attending the advance screening of Takers Wednesday night at the Pacific Place theater was hands-down the most interactive audience I’ve witnessed in a Seattle theater. There were taunts and hoots and unintended laughter along with a round of “oohs” and “aahs” that morphed into a spirited round of applause inspired by the formidable package of a boxer-clad Idris Elba as said package caught a fortunate beam of moonlight.

Takers is a stylish action/crime movie starring a hotlist of hot actors. Gordon (Elba and his moonlit package) is the leader of a sophisticated gang of thieves who tend toward impeccably tailored suits and sweet rides like vintage Porches and shiny new Range Rovers. Their last job gets tangled up with Russian mobsters and a questionable old friend who’s just done five years in Chino.

The first two-thirds of Takers is a slick gangster flick with surprisingly awesome acting and a cool opening caper. Director John Luessenhop and his team of writers lift scenes and style elements from outlaw movies ranging from The Godfather to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and do so to good effect. Though the final act loses some of the energy of the first two and the story

gets a bit predictable, ultimately the charisma and talent of the stars, the slick action sequences, and the stylish art direction carry the day.

The one exception to my acting kudos is Chris Brown as gang member Jesse Attica. Brown can’t act a lick unless he’s yelling. He’s got a key role later in the film, but his early scenes are few and often without dialogue. I’m betting that happened in the cutting room. His best work is in a nicely turned-out foot chase that’s fun and inventive and chock-full of stunts. The chase also gets a couple of the aforementioned unintended laughs as Brown roughs up female pedestrians who get in his way.

Deftly moonlit boxer shorts aside, Elba is perfect as the long-suffering older brother of a junkie and the gang’s undisputed big dog.

Black dudes with British accents are incredibly sexy in my book, but Elba also brings a super acting game to the table. His understated elegance and cool demeanor are laced with exhaustion as he tries to hold the caper together and get his junkie sister a new life.

This is a guy’s movie from start to finish, but former Oscar nominee Marianne JeanBaptiste (Secrets and Lies) gives some good acting as the junkie sister who keeps getting in the way. The

Takers stars Idris Elba’s formidable moonlit package

I would imagine this will create an unusual dilemma for some members of the audience. We tend to like things simple – the bad guys to be all bad and the good guys to be virtuous figures of almighty justice. But that isn’t Marshall’s goal, and if it turns off viewers then so be it. This director is consumed with forcing his audience to relate to both sides of the equation so that when the killing begins, the question of whom to root for isn’t crystal clear.

There is a caveat to all this: Whether intended or not, Fassbender is just so great as Quintus at a certain point he ends up taking the movie over, and while Etain (sinisterly yet seductively portrayed by Kurylenko) can’t help but fascinate, my allegiance slipped the Centurion’s way all the same. There is something about his emotional journey that makes him not so much a heroic figure, but one I just wanted to find something akin to happiness. After all he goes through, after all he puts on the line while many others (with two big exceptions) just continue to look out for themselves, after those he has sworn allegiance to threaten to betray him, Quintus retains both his dignity and his honor – and if those aren’t qualities worthy of respect, then I’m not sure what else would be.

Marshall totally redeems himself for the mediocre misfire that was Doomsday, and while Centurion does not quite rise to the beautifully realized magnificence of his underground horror masterwork The Descent, that still doesn’t make this ruggedly brutal Bmovie any less impressive. The violence has bite and punch, and the action sequences are arguably better than anything higher-priced Hollywood productions have shown us this entire summer. For genre fans, this is the type of film worth fawning over, and while I imagine its stay in the multiplex will sadly be short-lived, the potentially massive cult following it will generate on DVD and Blu-ray will be something else entirely.

Centurion Opening August 27 Stationed at a remote outpost in the furthest regions of the Roman Empire, Centurion Quintus Dias (Michael Fassbender) has been captured by the Picts and taken to their encampment hidden atop a desolate mountain range. But before they can hunt him for their sport, he escapes, setting out on foot across the snow, hoping to be reunited with his countrymen.

As luck would have it, he ends up being rescued by the army of General Titus Virilus (Dominic West), a great soldier and tactician charged with discovering the Pict camp and wiping them out. But the group is betrayed as their mute guide Etain (Olga Kurylenko) leads them into an ambush which decimates their numbers.

With Titus captured, Quintus leads the survivors on a daring rescue of their General. Things do not go as planned, and the Pict commander’s young son is killed during the raid. Now the small group must somehow make their way to the nearest Roman fort with Etain and a company of vicious fighters dogging their every move, with bloodthirsty vengeance the only thing on any of their minds.

Set during the 2nd-century Roman conquest of Britain, Neil Marshall’s Centurion is a bold, aggressive pursuit thriller that sets the pulse racing during the first few frames and then somehow manages to keep it there for the remainder of its 97-minute running

time. Not so much a story with heroes and villains as one about survival against the most perilous of odds, this vibrant and alive action epic is a total kick in the pants that’s a heck of a lot more

Celebrating 37 Years!

Northern Xposure (NX), the annual Seattle social fundraising weekend which donates 100% of its net proceeds to Lambert House, took place August 19-22. NX, now in its ninth year, began as a private event among friends, but is now a staple in the late summer Pacific Northwest Gay scene.

“I think that our work with the Seven Deadly Sins definitely opened NX up to a new crowd of supporters for Lambert House,” said Rich Kaalaas, of Two Knights Events, the primary promoter of NX. “This year, NX drew out a bigger and more diverse than ever before.”

Two Knights Event also produces the very successful Seven Deadly Sins party series.

Part of the proceeds from Seven Deadly Sins goes to Gay City Health Project.

“George [the other “knight” of Two Knights Events] and I both have done a lot of fundraising work over the years, so when we first launched Two Knights Events, we felt it important to continue being directly supportive of the community,” Kaalaas told SGN. The volunteers that create NX have been funding the Lambert House since the event’s conception.

Albert Rodriguez: I was trying to find a definition for “Moondoggie,” but wasn’t successful. Where did this word or band name come from?

Kevin Murphy: The first time I ever heard the term “Moondoggie” was in that movie Gidget. I used to be in a punk band and that was what we first had on all of our demos – we called them The Moondoggies.

Rodriguez: When did you form into a band?

Murphy: Well, I’ve known everybody for a long time before we were The Moondoggies. Caleb [Quick] and I lived in Bellingham for a little bit and we played together, and I’ve known Bob [Terreberry] and Carl [Dahlen] since high school. But as The Moondoggies, it’s probably been since 2006, I think, when we started playing in Bob’s garage.

Rodriguez: Have you guys ever played Bumbershoot?

Murphy: No, there’ve kind of been weird issues with blackout dates and unfortunately, for some reason, we couldn’t do it last year. But I’ve grown up here, so it’s one of those things you always want to do and hope to get the opportunity to play it.

Rodriguez: For the Bumbershoot performance, have you guys started rehearsing?

Will you be playing new songs from the upcoming album?

Murphy: A lot of these songs have been around for a while. In fact, we’re practicing more frequently and we have even newer stuff that I’m hoping we can get done by Bumbershoot. Even though these songs are new, we have even newer ones that I’d like to feel out.

Rodriguez: Are there any other artists performing at Bumbershoot that you’re excited to see?

Murphy: I’d like to go see David Bazan because his last album was amazing and I’ve met him a few times. I know that some of the Weedle’s Groove people are playing there, and they’re pretty awesome. We’re playing on Monday and I’m not sure who’s

This year, NX kicked off on Thursday, August 19 with a cocktail social at C.C. Attle’s, then broke off into multiple events on Friday with Valkyrie Queer at the Wildrose, the Buxom Beefy Bonfire at Alki Beach, and Muscleup, a dance party at the Seattle Eagle featuring DJ Brain Gorr.

The main party, Mythos, which took place at Neumos on Saturday, was the primary event of the weekend.

“NX Mythos last year was actually our first event with Neumos, before we started the Seven Deadly Sin dance series, so this was sort of an anniversary with the club,” said Kaalaas.

All of the Seven Deadly Sins parties have also taken place at Neumos.

“They are great to work with, and have a really solid team. We also like having the space on the stage and the dance floor,” Kaalaas told SGN. NX came to a close with Sweat-ea, a dance party at the Baltic Room on Sunday.

Most of NX’s events have become tradiheadlining that day.

Rodriguez: Is it Bob Dylan or Mary J. Blige?

Murphy: I think Dylan is on Saturday. It’s like Weezer, Courtney Love, or somebody. I was a big Weezer person in high school, but not too fond of anything post-Pinkerton.

Rodriguez: Aside from headlining dates, will you open any shows for other bands in the coming months?

Murphy: In November, we’re touring with a band called Dawes – they’re an L.A. band. We’ve toured with both The Cave Singers and Blitzen Trapper, and each tour has been enjoyable.

Rodriguez: Any wild tour stories? Long drinking binges, or not finding your hotel early in the morning?

Murphy: One time in Eugene, we stayed with these hippy people and they didn’t remember us the next morning, so it was really awkward and we had to get out of there. We were literally talking to them all night, and the next day they were like, “Who are you?” and we said, “Get in the van, let’s go!”

Rodriguez: What are some of your early concert memories?

Murphy: We used to go to the Redmond Fire House a lot – I remember seeing the Murder City Devils, and that was pretty rad.

I remember seeing The Hives and International Noise Conspiracy at Graceland.

Rodriguez: What are some of your favorite places in Seattle to get your buzz on?

Murphy: I haven’t been going out in a while. We actually built a bar in our garage and we’ll invite people over there. But once in a while I’ll go out and hang with some of the Maldives boys and Grand Hallway people [fellow Seattle bands] out in Ballard, to Conor Byrne or Hazelwood. In my neighborhood, there’s the Ravenna Alehouse.

Rodriguez: What’s your favorite song to do karaoke?

Murphy: The one that I do a lot is “In the Summertime” by Mungo Jerry. But I have to throw this out there, my brother is really funny, he always does “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Rodriguez: The Whitney Houston or Roseanne Barr version?

Murphy: Something in between.

Northern Xposure Weekend celebrates ninth year

“We do try to keep the lineup and concepts similar from year to year with a few changes,” said Kaalaas. “This year we did not have the Sunset Cruise on Sunday, but I do believe that will make an appearance on the 10th Anniversary Event. … We continue to try to make NX a sustainable and repeatable event, and feel we are taking good steps in that direction.”

NX is put on by an all-volunteer staff.

Kaalaas estimates that, since 2001, NX has raised over $106,000 for the Lambert House.

“Although NX has come from smaller roots; we want it to be an all-inclusive event that crosses boundaries,” Kaalaas told SGN.

SAM’s Remix comes to OSP

by James Whitely SGN Staff Writer Seattle Art Museum Remix August 27 Olympic Sculpture Park On Friday August 27, from 8 p.m.-midnight, the Olympic Sculpture Park (OSP) will host its second SAM Remix. The Seattle Art Museum (SAM) Remix party is one of the biggest parties in Seattle, bursting at the seams with creativity, style, and activity, with visual art at the center.

According to Greg Sandoval, manager of adult public programs at SAM, Remix “Gives people a different kind of museum experience.”

This SAM Remix will feature unconventional tours of the sculpture park after dark, a crochet party, a massive comic drawing collaboration that you can contribute to, a performance by Seattle artist Susie Lee, sketching in the park, music by local band Truckasaurus, Library Science, SunTzu Sound, I Heart Shiva, and more.

Also, Houston-based artist Trenton Doyle Hancock will discuss his new installation

for the PACCAR Pavilion (at OSP).

“Remix is a program that we’ve been working on for the last couple of years,” Sandoval told SGN. The event started out as a smaller-scale monthly after-hours party. Now quarterly, Remix has undergone a quick evolution into one of Seattle’s premier places to be.

You don’t have to be a member of SAM to get into Remix, but membership has its privileges at the party. SAM members receive priority access as well as a members-only lounge with a complimentary drink. Two new plays highlight Oregon Shakespeare Festival

American Night I was delighted with American Night, the new play by Richard Montoya and Culture Clash (Richard Montoya, Ric Salinas, Herbert Siguenza), at Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF). The play was the first of the new American Revolutions United States history cycle commissioned by OSF. American Night is a fever dream which protagonist Juan Jose has about U.S. history on the night before his citizenship test. It brings him everywhere from the signing of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo to the reversal of Prop 8, inviting him to take part in the scenes. It is a very funny and satirical romp.

My partner, whose daughter is going into high school, said she would like all of her daughter’s contemporaries to see this play because it is such a fun run through history.

A friend who was with us found the play episodic and didn’t feel it added anything to her knowledge about the cultural issues it raised. We all agreed Rene Millan as Juan and the ensemble of Stephanie Beatriz, Rodney Gardiner, David Kelly, Richard Montoya, Kate Mulligan, Kimberly Scott, Herbert Siguenza, and Daisuke Tsuji, all in a multitude of roles, were excellent actors.

I liked the fact that the authors appropriated the “What is a Jew?” speech from Merchant of Venice, and the Sharks and Jets music from West Side Story for their own purposes. My partner liked the fact that a seThrone of Bloo d quence about Viola Pettus curing the babies of a Klansman and a Mexican revolutionary included dolls dressed appropriately. made a good effort at doing a fan dance. The western-trained actors had to work against their strength, which was emotional characterization.

The Daedalus Project We were moved and entertained by The Daedalus Project, a fundraiser for AIDS organizations in Southern Oregon. The people who volunteered for the project got a standing ovation. It was clear that the performers, who are members of the OSF company, had put a lot of work into their preparations. The underwear parade was fun and an effective fundraiser.

We were very impressed with a staged reading we saw of Steve Yockey’s Octopus.

The well-written play deals with a couple inviting another couple into their bed with some surprising outcomes, including the characters of a mysterious bell boy and a sea monster. The acting by Christian Barillas, Kenajuan Bentley, Jonathan Haugen, and Christopher Livingston, and Eddie Lopez was great.

Susannah Flood and Ramiz Monsef were convincing in Dorothy Parker’s Here We Are. The Bardbershop Quartet (Mark Bedard, Emily Sophia Knapp, Miriam Laube, and Anil Margshayam), all dressed in Starbucks aprons, stood out with Java Jive. Lisa McCormick’s Taylor the Latte Boy followed that nicely, and Howie Seago did a wonderful pantomime melodrama. Michael Winters was delightful with There Are Fairies at the Bottom of the Garden. The women from costumes did an impressive version of “The Cell Block Tango” from Chicago, working the actors they work with into the story. Alyssa Smith, Heather St. Louis, Sarah Chaney, Sarah Goldberg, Pamela Bullock, and Erin Paige charmed. The Tiff, a sword fight between two men who looked like they came from Henry IV, was quite amazing. It involved invisible stagehands putting the men into amazing positions. Stephanie Beatriz, Christine Albright, Mark Bedard, Orion Bradshaw, Paul Cirzan, David Kelly, Emily Sophia Knapp, Christopher Livingston, and K. T. Vogt interacted seamlessly, all directed by Dan Donahue.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog Balagan Theatre Through September 4 Balagan Theatre took on an unusually difficult task with its current production of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog: once they got permission to do the internet hit (starring the inimitable Neil Patrick Harris), they had to basically create the music from scratch! Music director Kim Dare took on the challenge (with a bit of help from Rob Scherzer and Andy Rich and director Eric Ankrim) and handwrote the melodies and created orchestrations for a tiny band.

With Greg Bagley on bass, Alex Lathum on cello/guitar, and Zachary Stove on percussion, Dr. Horrible made what sounds like a seamless transition from internet to live theater.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is the funny, ironic story of Billy (Eric Ankrim), who video-blogs about how he wants to be top dog in the Evil League of Evil and win the love of Penny (Annie Jantzer), the nice girl he sees at his laundromat. His mission to win Penny is thwarted when his archrival, Captain Hammer (Jake Groshong), starts dating Penny.

It doesn’t really matter to Billy that Penny might not want him to be evil; he seems convinced that if she just sees how great evil is, they will live happily ever after. However, in order to be inducted by Bad Horse (Butch Stevenson) into the Evil League of Evil, Billy has to do something terrible, like blow

There is a vibrancy that live theater brings, though the technical aspects suffer a bit when forced to materialize in the material world outside of the make-believe internet. Still, we’re more than ready to suspend our disbelief when Ankrim pours out his aspirations and pulls out his freeze ray!

Co-directors Ankrim and M. Elizabeth Eller keep the rhythms popping and make great plays off stereotypical choreography with the clever use of laundry baskets. All the singers are powerful voices, and Ankrim, Groshong and Jantzer do a great job with the lead roles.

Richards and Nina’s mother used to be part of the group that also advocated for and acted with “direct action.” Nina finds this hard to believe, but finds proof of this in the archives. Nina tries to reconcile that vision of her mother with what she remembers and has been told.

Nina does a lot of her article composing onstage, typing and erasing (with the help of projection technology), so we see what she’s thinking and struggling with. More technology is used to create a propaganda piece for FOOF touting its accomplishments and its intentions to save land as habitat for vanishing species.

A fourth character is a true believer intern at FOOF, who is also Richards’ lover. Grace

(Courtney Jackson) ends up being fairly unnecessary in the scheme of things, though she helps to show Richards’ lack of empathy and compassion. There is a dance aspect to the production that seems disconnected to the rest of what has been developed.

The exploration of compromise in nonprofit life, the symbiosis of doing good while doing what one has to do, is a subject ripe for tearing into. The company has done a good job in developing various sides to the issue and finding characters that express those ambivalences. It will be interesting to see what changes may be made in future productions to clarify what they want it all to amount to. Richards is uncomfortable answering Nina’s questions about her deceased mother, Anne, and her mother’s flaws, feeling that Nina is only interested in diminishing her mother’s memory. Nina seems to confirm that when she reveals that she’s contacted K Martin (Erwin Galan), a disaffected former compatriot who lives in the woods and advocates – and has been arrested for – acts of subversion, like tree-spiking. This is an interesting trio of characters.

K is highly critical of FOOF and feels that it was built on unpublicized compromises that damage its credibility. He shows Nina how corporations had ulterior motives in giving huge sums of money to FOOF to buy land, and who then turned around and released the same to corporations to log or use the land just as they had before. After the emotional applause subsided, the stage lights all turned pink (the color associated with breast cancer awareness/support) and she sang “I Run for Life,” which references her own fight with breast cancer and her determination to overcome it, and seeks to encourage other breast cancer survivors and their families.

For me, the show’s two standout performances came in the way of B-sides; songs that I rarely gave a good listen to on their respective albums. The first, “The Different” from 2001’s Skin, left me with goosebumps.

Much like other Melissa Etheridge powerballads, the song builds and builds until finally the lyrics demand, “You’ve never been to the moon but don’t you want to go / under the sea and the volcano. You never looked in my eyes but don’t you want to know / what the dark and wild and the different know!”

The second song was a 10-minute, rockedout version of “Like The Way I Do,” which she prefaced by asking the audience, “Who else loves you like I do?”

After pouring her heart and soul out onstage, it became apparent that neither the artist nor the fans wanted Etheridge to leave. For an encore, Etheridge simply appeared back onstage and closed the show with “Gently We Row,” a stirring ballad about motherhood from her latest album.

The show and encore closed with a welldeserved standing ovation – the last from an audience who had been on their feet many times during the show. Fearless, indeed.

Melissa Etheridge I was ready to see headlining on August 22 at the Paramount.

I did, in fact, see all of those things … and much, much more. What I learned – what we all learned – is that Melissa Etheridge truly is fearless. She bared her soul and talked openly and honestly with the audience about wants and needs as she took us, the willing passengers, on a nearly three-hour nonstop, no opening band, no intermission rock ‘n’ rollercoaster ride of emotion, nostalgia, and love.

Fearless, Melissa Etheridge’s latest world tour, is much more than a greatest hits concert or a promotion of her 2010 album Fearless Love. Fearless delivers guitar solos, new takes on old favorites, and the chance to watch Melissa Etheridge – a Lesbian and rock icon – do what she does best: sing.

The show opened with very little dramatics; the stage was minimally decorated with a Persian rug and a half-moon back screen that flashed images and colors reminiscent of an LSD trip. Etheridge, dressed in a sleek evergreen crushed velvet blazer and purple pants, was accompanied by a lead guitarist, bass player, drummer, and keyboardist (who played every instrument imaginable). This was a breath of fresh air. This was, to me, a clear sign that Etheridge wasn’t messing around. Fearless, from beginning to end, is about the artist and her music – and very lean on theatrics.

At 49, Etheridge reminded the audience that she’s been playing songs for over 20 years. Still, she approached each song as continued from cover if she’d recorded it yesterday. It was nice to see an artist that has yet to be bored by her own material. This was especially evident Mad Men three-peat. Should Win: Jim Parsons It’s a shame Ed O’Neill (Modern Family) isn’t in this bunch, though his absence may have opened the door for last year’s deserving winner, aka the coolest geek on primetime, to win a makeup Emmy.

Supporting Actress, Drama: Christine Baranski (The Good Wife), Rose Byrne (Damages), Sharon Gless (Burn Notice), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) Will Win: Christine Baranski Emmy voters love them some veteran actors, and Baranski fits the protocol. But watch out for Gless, another TV diva.

Should Win: Elisabeth Moss The curvaceous Hendricks plays Joan Harris like a broken-in fiddle, but she doesn’t get as much screen time as Moss, who has gradually made Peggy Olson into an interesting and inspiring character.

Supporting Actor, Drama: Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age), Michael Emerson (Lost), Terry O’Quinn (Lost), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Martin Short (Damages), John Slattery (Mad Men) Will Win: Andre Braugher Braugher, who was riveting back in the day on Homicide: Life on the Street, is another veteran that voters adore.

Should Win: Aaron Paul If Bryan Cranston is perfect and brilliant, his co-star is a notch better – indeed, Paul turns Jessie Pinkman into a sleazy, vulnerable thug that you end up feeling sorry for every episode.

A Wizard of Oz/Cinderella theme was introduced early on, as a broken-down taxi set against a New York street backdrop forced the worried singer to rant, “Now we’ll never make it to the the Monster Ball, people.” But being the crafty diva that she is, Lady GaGa popped the hood and began playing a keyboard – of all things – and quickly segued into the next number, “Just Dance.” Dressed in a plum-colored unitard with matching knee-high boots and two-toned blonde hair, she looked amazingly fit and fierce at the same time.

The Tacoma Dome became a party zone during “LoveGame,” as Lady GaGa slipped out of a Flying Nun outfit and into something much more slinky. “Now dance, you motherfuckers!” she shouted, and waved a lighted torch that doubled as a glowstick.

Afterward, she complimented a young woman at the foot of the stage who was pregnant and celebrating a birthday, and then joked with another fan by saying, “I’ll throw my tampon at you, bitch!”

Flexing her singing chops, Lady GaGa did a worthy rendition of “Speechless,” though it dragged on and on to the point that audience members got up to use the restroom or checked their e-mail on their cell phones.

“This is my favorite part of the show,” she stated firmly, before announcing that Virgin Mobile – the tour’s major sponsor – would be donating $20,000 to RE*generation, an organization that helps Gay and Lesbian homeless youth. It’s here that Lady GaGa distinguishes herself from any other superstar performer, publicly declaring her support to the LGBT community – Madonna and Elton John have made pledges to Gay issues off-stage, but Lady GaGa uses the platform to voice her backing of youth that have been dislocated and disowned by their families because of their sexuality.

Two numbers seemed out of place, particularly a newly written single called “You and I” – the anthemic rock song was out of Lady GaGa’s element. And with the exception of showing off her buff, Bisexual German dancer, “Teeth” was overly campy and dull. Either song could have been omitted from the program, as could’ve the pop icon’s unnecessary babbling at several intervals – do we really need to know you partied with KISS back home? – and the pauses between costume changes were near aggravating.

“So Happy I Could Die” was the sleeper hit of the concert, a gorgeous arrangement featuring Lady GaGa marching down the catwalk in a celestial ice princess get-up with translucent wings, who was then hoisted about 20 feet from the stage on a lift. She later escaped the attack of an inflatable half piranha/half octopus beast during “Monster,” and then got the entire venue jumping out of their seats and shoes for “Poker Face.”

A gory twist on “Alejandro,” complete with fake blood, was rather interesting and fun, and the main set finale of “Paparazzi” was a flashy mix of colorful lights and semikitsch, like the dress worn by Lady GaGa that was a cross between a palm tree and an origami project.

A one-song encore returned the international diva to the stage for a high-voltage performance of “Bad Romance,” which displayed Lady GaGa in a shiny, aluminumlike outfit and her dancers in matching glittery silver bike helmets. It was a raucous finish to a concert full of great energy.

Regardless of how original or innovative Lady GaGa is as a recording artist, her live shows are unparalleled. Theatrically, it was a better production than Madonna’s “Sticky and Sweet” tour offering, and musically, the fact that Lady GaGa can sing and dance at the same time deserves more kudos than Cher and Janet Jackson, who tend to use pre-recorded vocals throughout their concerts to avoid sounding out of breath.
