Cho-Dependent August 27 Paramount Theatre Comedian. Activist. Revolutionary. Margaret Cho’s name is synonymous with many titles.

Her television appearances have ranged from early beginnings on The Golden Girls spinoff The Golden Palace to the current hit Drop Dead Diva. Her comedic styles run the gamut, dealing with sensitive subjects including weight issues and alcohol/drug dependencies. Her work for the GLBT community is tireless, leading to San Francisco, her hometown, declaring April 30 “Margaret Cho Day.” Given the opportunity to interview this wonderful lady and Gay icon, this Seattle Gay News reporter jumped at the chance.

The modest, feelgood film Patrik, Age 1.5 is yet another comedy-drama about Gay couples wanting the same thing: to be treated as straight people – and there is nothing wrong with that, right? Affectionate married Swedish couple Göran (Gustaf Skarsgård) and Sven (Torkel

Petersson) move into a suburban community where all the houses on the street look the same. They arrange to adopt a child to complete the traditional happy family unit. Frustrated that their request is denied at first, their domestic harmony is further spoiled when Patrik (Thomas Ljungman), a 15-year-old with a criminal background and contempt for Queers, turns up as their assigned “son.”

Comedy ensues from this arrangement as Göran and Sven fight bureaucratic red tape from social services and the police. They also battle with the contentious Patrik and each other.

Thankfully, Patrik, Age 1.5 writer/director Ella Lemhagen also mines this admittedly contrived situation for poignancy and tenderness. Skarsgård’s performance is quite affecting as he palpably bonds with Patrik. see director page 31

How many are actually lucky enough to make that dream come true? William “Billy” Murray is one of those people. Working with the fa-

mous Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, William talked to the Seattle Gay News about what it was like being a clown as well as being an out Gay man, and how the two mix.

Eric Andrews-Katz: What is your earliest memory of the circus?

William Murray: My family used to take us to see the RBBB [Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey] Circus every year. Growing up in New Jersey, it was a tradition. It was sort of a neighborhood outing. We’d see the show and I loved it, thinking that it was

so magical. I remember doing mini circuses in the neighborhood with jumpropes and dogs jumping through them. Even after I moved out, I went to the circus every year.

Andrews-Katz: Which came first, clown school or gymnastics?

Murray: Gymnastics came first. I taught at a center called Health Quest in New Jersey. It was a woman who first employed me there who used to be a flying trapeze artist for RBBB. She had gone to the RBBB Clown College. That’s closed now, and those directors went on to start new schools. She introduced me to directors she had known.

Andrews-Katz: You attended the New York Goofs Ultimate Clown School. What’s the curriculum like?

Murray: Two weeks of intensive studies.

Six days a week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are improvisational workshops, trust-building exercises, how to do props and makeup, how to write a skit and do costuming. You have to learn things like slips, falls, and trips.

Andrews-Katz: Were you out of the closet when you joined the RBBB Circus?

Murray: Yes, I was. I came out in my freshman year of high school. I had a notso-hot relationship with my parents because of us not being honest with each other. It was really affecting our relationship, so I didn’t have much of a choice because I wanted the relationship with my parents to get better. I didn’t do it in the best way.

I wrote them a really nice letter explaining who I was and that I wanted this to be the first step in better communication. I wrapped it up and put it in their stocking for Christmas. I thought honesty would be the perfect present. Let’s just say it didn’t go so well. We have a great relationship now, though.

Andrews-Katz: How does being an out Gay man affect your performance?

Murray: I wouldn’t say it affects my performance. Playing a clown character is something very family-oriented, so a person’s sexuality doesn’t come to the surface. But there are things about me, and my character, that may be seen. Some signs are there for those who want to look for them.

I have rainbows on, and play a rainbow instrument.

Andrews-Katz: Have there been any situations with being out while performing in a family-style production?

Murray: Not so much. We have performers from six different continents, so there are all sorts of people in our troupe. Some of them have very different beliefs at home, but they are on my turf and they have to be educated about our ways. I also feel very fortunate for the aspect of learning about other cultures within the troupe. The only other situation is that I have a significant other, and being away from him is difficult at times.

Andrews-Katz: How does a performer build their “clown persona”?

Murray: So much of being a clown is wearing your insecurities on the surface.

You really have to be comfortable with yourself to be a clown. You want to show people that you can laugh and cry at yourself while being both strong and weak. So much of being a clown is therapeutic at times, so you can work out inner issues by making fun of them and making others laugh with you. It’s a great way to overcome insecurities. My clown character isn’t necessarily Gay, but I can make fun of who I am and act more effeminate or more masculine than I would normally. It’s part of doing your job. I do not have my persona trademarked, as do a lot of others. My real name is William, so I just call my clown “Billy” Murray. My character is still building. The makeup I use doesn’t really change, but those who stay with the show on a long-term basis? Those are the ones that copyright their face, their look, and names.

Andrews-Katz: What is your favorite part of being in RBBB’s FUNundrum?

Murray: I really like 60 minutes before the show. It gives the public an opportunity to meet the performers and try on circus costumes, ringmaster’s jackets, etc. … I can meet people from all over the country that way. It seems to really get people excited.

A month of delicious music

Livingston Taylor Mercy and Cuteness loved Livingston Taylor’s big, smooth voice and accomplished guitar work at the Triple Door last week. Cuteness pointed out that the hall was pretty empty. When Mercy wondered why, Cuteness pointed out the audience was grayhaired like them, and like the performer.

The small but enthusiastic crowd shouted “woo-hoos.” A woman next to Mercy said “Natty man!” when Taylor appeared in gray pants, shirt, bow tie, and red suspenders.

Mercy liked his openers, “I Must Be Doing Something Right” and “Everyone Is Just Like Me.” She liked the fact that he changed the lyrics in “Start All Over Again” from “Do you recall the famous men” to “Do you recall the women and the men….”

Cuteness enjoyed the fact that Livingston talked about his creative process, for example, whistling the melody he started with for one song, and explaining that since the tune was complex, he wanted the words to be simple. He said he came up with the idea of “Don’t Lose Hope” without realizing how much hope it was going to take to come up with all the rhymes for “hope” the song required.

Taylor talked about loving the movie and song “North to Alaska,” but joked that the songwriter Johnny Horton didn’t get hired again because his lyrics gave away the whole movie. Livingston sang his own song about the state, “Last Alaska Moon.”

Mercy liked the song “I Ought to Be More Herbal,” with lines like “You are what you eat; good God, I’m a weenie,” and “What made Seattle famous made a gerbil out of me.”

playing being an Olympic sport. His piano playing was also elegant.

Taylor did a wonderful rendition of Irving Berlin’s “What’ll I Do,” pointing out what he considered a brave transition from major to minor to represent the composer’s vengeance of his loved one. Cuteness thought Livingston knocked that song out of the ballpark. Mercy thought the “Trolley Song” from Meet Me in St. Louis was equally delightful.

Taylor segued from “Heart and Soul” to his own “Say Yes If Your Baby Wants Something” nicely. He said “We’re the Best of Friends” was about people who have been together forever.

Livingston introduced the Stephen Bishop song, “On and On,” saying there is one note in the song that is too high for him. He asked the audience to sing it for him. That worked out all right. Taylor’s originals, “City Lights” and “A Carolina Day,” were nice.

He sang a very funny folksong, “Railroad Bill,” in which the subject and the author have a disagreement about whether Bill will rescue a cat. Mercy liked the lines, “I’m the writer, God damn.

I’ve got the pen in my hand.”

Livingston closed with his song “My Baby Don’t Mind.” He said, “I must advise you, this is a fantasy. In reality, your baby will mind.”

As an encore, he did Rodgers and Hart’s “My Romance.” Taylor said Oscar Hammerstein is his favorite lyricist. He sang a few lines from “I’m as Crazy as Kansas in August” to demonstrate what he loves about Hammerstein.

Mercy ran into her friend Jocosity Longitudinal in the gym (of course) after his return from the Gay Games in Cologne. She had heard that he had won five gold medals and his partner, Justify Gooddoctor, had won five golds and one silver. Mercy asked Justify how that felt. He said it was good for his ego.

“Justify won sizzling gold in the 1,500 meters, another in the 800, and still another in the 400. He literally ran away from his competition, blowing them out. He also won gold in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, and a silver in the 4x200 relay.”

“I did not sizzle, but he did well enough

to also win five gold medals. I won my age group in the shot put, discus, javelin, and hammer throw.”

“Both of us competed in the 70-74 age bracket and were helped along in that not too many competed in that group. Our reply to those that claim we had no “real” competition is to say, ‘Where were all the others in our age group, and why weren’t they competing?’ We invite them to test themselves at the next games. We feel great to be our age and to be able to do these things as well as we can. The philosophy of the games is to do your personal best.”

Touring Rufus Wainwright not slowing down

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer Rufus Wainwright August 25 Paramount Theatre Rufus Wainwright is not familiar with the term “take a break.” The acclaimed singersongwriter is a nonstop music machine, touring when not recording and writing operas when not doing either – all this aside from giving Judy Garland’s Carnegie Hall performance a whole new spin. Wainwright’s latest recording, All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu, is a bare-bones effort in contrast to his grand orchestral arrangements and the use of multiple instruments; it’s simply a piano and his vocals. The Canadian singer-songwriter will introduce Seattle fans to fresh material with a live appearance at the Paramount Theatre on August 25 – visit www.stgpresents.org for ticket information. Rufus Wainwright: Well, I’m doing the usual slog of the major cities. But no, it’s not an in-depth tour.

Rodriguez: You always include Seattle, and that’s a good thing.

Wainwright: You gotta hit the corners.

[Laughs.] You gotta clean the corners, as they say.

Rodriguez: In relation to this tour, are you only doing music from the new album?

Wainwright: The show is in two halves.

The first half is the new album performed as a song cycle, meaning that I will request for no applause in between songs – I want to present it as a whole piece. Along with that, I have an amazing outfit by my friend Zaldy, who did costumes for Lady GaGa. And also I have a beautiful film by Douglas Gordon, who’s an incredible visual artist – it’s very dark, morose, artistic, experimental, and so forth. That’s the first half of the show. Then in the second half I come out and sing all the old favorites and we kick up our heels, have a fun time. And since my sister [Martha Wainwright] is touring with me, we’ll probably sing together, as well. It’s a really see music lounge page 32

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Frankenocchio Lee Center, Seattle University Through September 8 The stunningly beautiful puppets of Brian Kooser and company are back. So is a crowd-pleasing piece from the past: Frankenocchio, last performed in 2003. The obvious assumption of the title is that it is half Frankenstein’s monster and half Pinocchio. Both of those stories have a character “created” by a human, neither of which is true in this story. This character is a beatifically-faced young boy, with glittery, expressive eyes whose life starts out flying among the clouds until his puppet strings are cut by some god-like being and he is sent plunging down to earth, severing head from body at the bottom of the fall. Once his head is severed from his body, each part goes on adventures to try to reunite and become a whole person. However, this twopart innocent is exploited along the way by many nefarious people who try to find something to profit from.

Veteran puppeteers Gavin Cummins, Jenelle Weidlich, and Brian Kooser are joined by talented newcomers Ben Burris, Katie Carrasco, and Hannah Reid to create the vast landscape that Frankenocchio must travel. Wonderful moments include the lyrical beginning, where Frankenocchio is cut down from the sky, the elephant, an underwater seascape lit by blacklight, and the bigger-than-life-size puppets that suddenly appear next to the normal puppets. The puppetry techniques can make you forget that up to three different people are needed, sometimes, to manipulate one small puppet.

Think of puppets as the originators of the “cartoon ethic” where violence is comic and bad things happen even to heroes. Familiar jokes make it easy to follow the story. The bad guy, Malvaggio, is trying to take over the circus, the good guys are a weak old man, Benevecchio, and a character who believes only bad things happen to him named Tragico.

The stereotypes enforce the storyline allowing us to make the improbable leaps that the script contains and we can shrug and say, “It’s a puppet show.” The whole is definitely worth more than the parts and is a fun, subversive way to transfer our aspirations and desires on stage. ters are based on what those kids offered in writing exercises and improvs. After working on it in the early decade, Yorkey (who spent many years at the Village as an associate) and Kitt took time off, and have since reinvested in the work. Yorkey and Kitt just won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for their Broadway musical (developed through Village’s FNM process) Next to Normal.

Next to Normal will tour here in 2011.

Cloaked was created by Michelle Elliott (book and lyrics) and Danny Larson (music) who are the creators of The Yellow Wood, which was very recently mounted by Contemporary Classics, a young musical theater company focused on new musicals. This modern musical focuses on the internet and the opportunity it creates to develop fantasy lives different from who you are every day. The score includes computerized music and breaks out of the typical melodic song mold.

Last up was Lincoln In Love by writing team Peter Kellogg (book and lyrics) and David Friedman (music), who offered a historically accurate depiction of Abraham Lincoln in his early years of politicking in Springfield, Illinois. His courtship of Mary Todd, including bumbling missteps, is at the center of this engaging creation. Kellogg and Friedman had a great 2009 at Village, where two of their prior submissions to the FNM were given mainstage productions in the same year: Stunt Girl and Chasing Nicolette.

All participants in the festival were given comment sheets to fill out, which the composing teams read with great anticipation.

These creators have come to respect the opinions of the Village Original members and know that these audiences care a great deal and support the process of bringing new musicals to life.

From August 12 through 15, Village Theatre held its 10th Annual Festival of New Musicals, which brought musicals and their composing teams together from all over the U.S. to workshop their musicals and find out what audiences think. Village Theatre has built up the festival to be a place where an excited and sharply critical (in a good way) audience feels like they really have an opportunity to influence how a musical is shaped. Those people who become members of the Village Originals program get to hear some of the most talented Seattle musical theater performers sing, concert-style, these up-and-coming musicals. This year’s six musicals were chosen from well over a hundred submissions. (Does that indicate that musical theater is in healthy shape?)

Up first was It Shoulda Been You, with book and lyrics by Brian Hargrove and music by Barbara Anselmi. This musical comedy of manners escalates a typical wedding into an uproarious free-for-all. Hargrove has been an actor and found success in television helping create such shows as Titus and Wanda at Large. Anselmi has worked as a musical director for many musicals. Music direction seems to lend itself to composing as a “gateway profession.”

Eager to prove that not every Gay man registers for NAMBLA when presented with a cute male teenager, the film’s characters combat discrimination with dignity. While the insistence on using AOR pop tunes on the soundtrack makes Patrik, Age 1.5 feel emotionally calculated and button-pushing, the messages still go down smoothly.

Lemhagen chatted with Seattle Gay News about her film and how she came to make this Queer family comedy.

Gary M. Kramer: What prompted you to adapt this play into a film?

Ella Lemhagen: I never heard or read the play – I accepted [the job] just from the pitch. I read the play and didn’t like the play so much, so I used the pitch and wrote my own story/version. I like mistaken identity comedies where someone thinks one person will show up and another person does. And this is also a love story between three men – if you count the boy.

Kramer: The theme is of the main characters wanting to be like everyone else, with a suburban house and a family. Why does that resonate?

Lemhagen: It’s more the idea Göran wants it, but Sven doesn’t. Sven has the background of living this typical life – he has been married and has a child – and he left it. He met Göran and chose a different [Gay] life, but then he realized Göran is going after what Sven has left. Sven wants something completely different. He lives with a man now. I was interested in that conflict. Göran, is not conflicted about being Gay. He wants to live an ordinary life with kids and doesn’t want to be special, so he’s confused when people treat him like he’s different [because he’s Gay].

Kramer: The film is pretty familyfriendly – not too edgy, sexy, or violent. Did you specifically want it to appeal to a broad audience?

Lemhagen: Yes. The producer’s idea was to make it mainstream, and what I liked about that was not just telling a story about Gay people for Gay people, because that be-

Patrik, Age 1.5 Opening August 20 Queer parenting is all the rage of late.

From Annette Bening and Julianne Moore on the silver screen to Rep. Jamie Pederson, his partner Eric, and their little fourman bobsled team Trygve, Leif, Erik, and Anders, Queer parents are out and proud and – according to the researchers behind the National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study – doing fairly well.

With all the uproar, one might think it’s a new phenomenon. But Queer folks have been raising children for a long, long time.

These days we’re just doing it officially (or trying to, anyway).

Writer/director Ella Lemhagen taps the zeitgeist with her film fest darling Patrik, Age 1.5, the story of Göran and Sven (Gustaf Skarsgård and Torkel Petersson), a Swedish married couple who set out to adopt a child.

The boys run into a series of roadblocks before finally getting the letter they had hoped for, the letter telling them their son Patrik, age 1.5, was on the way.

Unfortunately, an errant decimal point can wreak massive havoc quite disproportionate to its size. Patrik (Thomas Ljungman) is, in fact, a 15-year-old homophobe with a history of violence. Let the games begin.

Patrik, Age 1.5 is a charming Swedish film, and I love charming Swedish films.

The Swedes are lovely folks and a bit weird (I give you SAAB, ABBA, and caviar that comes in toothpaste tubes). Patrik, Age 1.5 is very Swedish and a bit weird. It’s also

Patrik, Age 1.5 is also a gut-wrenching family melodrama, like a Douglas Sirk film but with a dash of sarcasm (Sirk could have used a little sarcasm). Whew! I’m almost exhausted.

Lemhagen is also an expert at threading the story with clever little intersections that create provocative cinematic moments.

It’s important that it’s a Gay couple, but I wanted to tell it so everyone can relate to the family issues. Their struggles aren’t specific to a Gay couple, more of people you can relate to.

Kramer: Much of the comedy comes from the bureaucratic red tape Göran and Sven go through with social services and the police. Are you showing how difficult Gay adoption is?

Lemhagen: Yes. I really checked the situation in Sweden before I made this film. I interviewed the first Swedish Gay couple that was accepted to legally adopt in 2003.

But they are still waiting to adopt, except within a family that already exists. So it was based on that couple’s story. It’s upsetting in a way that it’s legal, but not possible because of bureaucracy.

Kramer: How did you choose the actors for the film? Did you go for certain types – to break stereotypes, perhaps?

Lemhagen: I was thinking of this as a love story, and it’s always difficult to cast a love story. You want good actors, and for them to be likeable. A couple is more difficult to find than nice actors. Torkel [Sven] and I worked before, and he’s a slapstick actor and famous in Sweden. I was afraid he was too funny to play here. I wanted him to feel real, and his emotions can be related to. We discussed Gustaf as Göran, but I was almost sure he was too young [at] 26. So I took those two in by chance, and after a minute I was convinced they were in love.

I know they are both straight, but I believed in it. It was more difficult to find a young kid for Patrik, but Thomas had a lot of energy and wanted to do it. But he was almost too charming. I liked him, but he was too cute.

I was looking for a much more [dangerous child] with a criminal past. I tried to turn him down. I [stripped] his [voice] away and worked more on his expressions and body language than words and dialogue.

Kramer: Last question: What’s with all the country music on the soundtrack?

Lemhagen: Maybe it was a Gay stereotype, but I wanted that music for Sven, who is macho. I started to think of him as a cowboy, with his shirts and boots. Originally I wanted only Dolly Parton, but then it was so

Rodriguez: In the second half, will you do a varied set list from city to city?

Wainwright: Um, it depends. I’ll switch it up sometimes, and other times I’ll do the same set I did the night before. It really, really depends on how I’m feeling and how my voice is.

Rodriguez: The new album is definitely more of a stripped-down project – basically you and a piano. Did you always have this album in the back of your mind?

Wainwright: I did. I relied heavily on my solo piano voice work over the years. In between these huge projects and tours, I’ve always had to eek out a living alone. It’s been a significant part of my career that I felt needed at some point to be presented properly, so it had been on my mind for a long time. But what is most apparent with this album is that it could only exist successfully or have great meaning if it happened at an intense time of my life, which has been, of course, with the death of my mother. It has to mean something deeper than just putting out a piano voice record.

Rodriguez: Your opera, Prima Donna.

Will it rotate to different cities or will it be retired soon?

Wainwright: There will be a big announcement this year, hopefully, for some other dates into the major cities. I can’t get too much into it because we’re hammering out contracts. I don’t think it’ll ever join the ranks of the great operas of our time because it’s my first opera and it’ll take a while

In the poem (Modern, Political, Radical) Pulp Friction, Michael Carosone uses a play on words, calling for pulp fiction to become pulp friction in the national Gay movement.

The 175-page anthology’s other poet, Jeff Walt, offers up three unique and mentionable pieces: Jerk Off, Santa, and Seduced.

Cartoonist Tyler Dorchester sketches up comedy mixed with cruising in The Brotherhood, a seven-page multi-part soap opera of betrayal, lust, and redemption surrounding “Homosexuals Anonymous.”

Steven Goupil, Re-Pulped’s other cartoonist, draws the tale of Dickie Derringer, Semi-Private Dick. Also spanning seven pages, the reader gets to follow the exploits and adventures of Dickie as he finds true love in the last place he’d ever expect to find it: a Gay bar.

Four paintings by Charles Demuth (18831935) are included, each seemingly more erotic than the other. The reader is treated to a bathhouse orgy, a sailor circle-jerk, cruising in the woods, and soldiers’ love on the battlefield. Without being too over-the-top, Demuth’s images are a single snapshot of fantasy turned reality.

before I’m up there with the ABCs – Aidas, Bohemes, and Carmens – but on the other hand, it’s made quite a splash, and I know singers and orchestras love to perform it. So it’ll be around for a while.

Rodriguez: You have a connection to Berlin on this album, which is becoming a hub for artists. What was your personal experience in that city?

Wainwright: I was just touring Europe for four months and a lot of my time was spent in and around Berlin, mainly because we have a lot of friends there – my boyfriend and I – and I’ve done a lot of work there in the theatre, so Berlin is a hub. There’s a certain pace and a kind of civility and joie de vivre in Europe that is missing in America at times, especially with the urban life in America. People just live better over there, and it raised a lot of questions for me coming back.

Rodriguez: For anyone who’s bought that first guitar and is sitting down to write some songs, possibly considering a music career, do you have any advice on how to get started?

Wainwright: It’s guaranteed to take you 10 years, at least, to get your foot in the door. [Laughs.] From that first song to that first album that you’re happy with, it’s going to take about 10 years – and that doesn’t include college, either. Once you’re out in the work force, it takes a good 10 years, and you really have to perform as much as possible in front of an audience. You gotta go out there and torture yourself, basically.

Rodriguez: Final question: It’s summertime, it’s hot. Any advice on how the Gay boys can cool off?

Wainwright: With xTube and air conditioning, there are options. [Laughs.] But I prefer the beach. I’m old-fashioned.

Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964), Jack Johnston, Jan Stary, and R. Edward Jack. Although all of the photographers offer compelling images, it was the Polaroid scans of Johnston that caught my attention. In 1978, while living in New York City, Johnston took several hundred self-portraits with a Polaroid One-Step SX70. Acting as a “best of” from the set, Kovar selected eight photos, all very different and very personal, to display.

Where Re-Pulped really shines is in the short stories, as each writer brings their own version of pulp to life. Two writers, Eric Andrews-Katz and Ryan Crawford, really stand out.

The first, Eric Andrews-Katz, whose work appears in other Gay City anthologies, offers the reader The Gaucho’s Way, the tale of Claudio Alveraz, an Argentinean dancer and womanizer, who is ultimately branded by a Gaucho. Andrews-Katz leaves nothing to the imagination as he describes the scene’s scent, appearance, and feel so skillfully that you imagine you are in the room witnessing the scene yourself. Just when you think the ultimate violation is about to occur, Andrews-Katz shifts gears and offers a tale of payback and revenge on the Pampas.

The second, The West Gate by Ryan Crawford, tells the tale of a post-apocalyptic Seattle where Barack, a Gay man, is a part of a “tribe” of LGBT people, and Natives struggle to survive. There are many amazing layers to this story, as Crawford is a thoughtful and intense writer. The West Gate is the standout piece of the book.

Gay City Vol. 3: Re-Pulped is an anthology that is a breath of fresh air in that it is quality work and has a little something for everyone. Re-Pulped would be a welcome addition to your bookshelf; however, be warned that it is an addictive read that you may gladly breeze through in just one sitting.

PISCES (February 19 – March 19): Worries, especially about work, health, relationships and sex, are kicking up a storm in your head. The real challenge is to take a mature, sensible view. An older friend can help you keep things in perspective.

Besos Excesos portrays Fedro’s essence and translates his groundbreaking style into a unique and elaborate musical production.

Fedro met with members of the media and several VIP fans before his performance shortly after midnight. Flanked by two masculine backup dancers, Fedro performed his single “Solo Un Dia” – written by one of the most successful singer-songwriters of recent years, Espinoza Paz – as well as Fedro’s signature song from Viva El Sueno, “Yo No Naci Para Amar,” one of Juan Gabriel’s most legendary anthems. In addition, Fedro performed “Dr. Psiquiatra” by Latin music legend Gloria Trevi.

The show was a huge success; not just because of the sheer number in attendance – Neighbours was packed – but by the energy level and excitement that Fedro’s personal appearance bolstered. Noche Latina is one of the best dance parties in the city. With the Latino population in Seattle growing and the popularity of Noche Latina on the rise, I suspect we will see a lot more of Latin music’s up-and-coming acts grace the stage at Neighbours Nightclub.

Eric Andrews-Katz: Did you always want to be a comedian?

Margaret Cho: Actually, yes. When I was very young, it was something that I certainly aspired to and wanted to do. Ever since I understood what it was from watching it on TV, I thought this would be my life.

Andrews-Katz: Who inspired you to first perform comedy?

Cho: I think Richard Pryor was my first major influence. Then Eddie Murphy and maybe Joan Rivers. Steve Martin was a great one, too.

Andrews-Katz: Which comedians inspire you today?

Cho: I love people like Chris Rock and Wanda Sykes. Those are major influences today.

Andrews-Katz: With all of your political activism, what do you think is the biggest problem facing the [collective] Queer community?

Cho: I think one of the major issues today is Gay marriage and marriage equality.

There is no acceptance around Gay marriage, which means there is this idea that we can pay lip service to the word equality without have to really have it apply. It’s amazing to me why people are willing to put out so much money and effort, and go to such measures, to be sure that Gays can’t be married. Those who make the most efforts are usually the ones that have nothing to do with Gay marriage. Their lives won’t be changed by it at all! The only problems they have are theological, and that’s not enough for an argument.

Andrews-Katz: What will be the future for Condi, the “alternative lifestyle companion” on LOGO’s Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in the World?

Cho: I don’t know. We have not recorded any new episodes yet, so I’m not sure what the future holds. I’d love to do more, though!

Andrews-Katz: What do you think is the biggest contribution in making Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva such a huge success?

Cho: I think it is a great show, and I think the performances and writing are excellent.

People really seem to have fallen in love with it. So that’s why it is so successful.

Andrews-Katz: In the past, you’ve ref-

erenced the challenges that size can present during filming a TV show. Do you think Brooke Elliot (who plays Jane Bingum on Drop Dead Diva) receives the same kind of pressures?

Cho: Well, I think because the show is about self-acceptance and finding the beauty within, it’s a little different. Brooke is so gorgeous in every way, so she is really the perfect role model of how we should feel about ourselves, and how we go about doing awesome stuff.

Andrews-Katz: Do you think shows like Drop Dead Diva, or Hairspray the Musical are changing the ways we view and accept an individual’s size?

Cho: I hope it helps. For me it helps. I am a fan of the show as well as being somebody who is on it. I feel it does a great job, especially when people are feeling good about themselves. It gives a new idea of what beauty is.

Andrews-Katz: Do you think there is a double standard for men and women when it comes to television and an actor’s physical size?

Cho: Of course there is! There aren’t a lot of women out there who have any variance in the way they look on television. You don’t see many [women] over a size zero on TV. … You see [the full range] of different sizes of guys. We don’t seem to have the same freedom with women on TV. Andrews-Katz: What are some of the subjects you’ll be exploring in the new show, Cho-Dependent?

Cho: The album is about a lot of things.

Some darker themes such as drug addiction and dependences, which is a play on the title. There are lighter things, so it runs the gambit through a bunch of different topics. I discuss the idea that the seed of domestic violence is planted inside everyone. I discuss dark and also silly things, so it’s all over the place.

Andrews-Katz: Your new CD features live performances of songs. What singers or groups inspired you to tackle this angle?

Cho: Actually, it’s not live, it’s produced.

But the people who inspired me are the people involved with the CD. It’s music and comedic songs, comedy with music, and all the people who are on it are great. Tegan and Sarah, Ani DiFranco, and Fiona Apple are just some of the major players and influences in the recording of the album.

Andrews-Katz: What are the biggest challenges to your success?

Cho: I don’t know. I just really think it’s about continuing, serving, and writing more.

Just being in the game and staying true to your ideals and trying to enjoy it, too. There are a lot of different types of challenges.

Andrews-Katz: What is the first sentence that comes to mind with each of the following names? Barack Obama.

Cho: He’s great! I love him. I think he’s a great president and doing a fantastic job.

Andrews-Katz: Former President George W. Bush.

Cho: He lives in Dallas, and Texas voted for Obama. I find that interesting.

Andrews-Katz: Rue McClanahan.

Cho: I miss her. She really helped me out in the beginning. I did an episode of The Golden Palace and was supposed to sing a song. I was nervous. She sang the note into my ear right before so I would have it perfect. She was a very generous, beautiful, extremely funny, and talented lady.

Andrews-Katz: Young-Hie Cho [Margaret’s mother].

Cho: My first comedic memory of her is when she used to take us to a department store called Montgomery Ward. She’d say [accent implied] “Kids, let’s go to Montgomery Ward,” and we’d laugh so hard.

That was my first impression of her. I was 7 when I was doing that.

She has been the recipient of awards from GLAAD, Lambda Legal, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the National Organization for Women, among many others. She is also the author of two books and has appeared on eight different CDs/DVDs and is currently touring the country in her new show, Cho-Dependent.
