Jeffree Star August 18 El Corazon Jeffree Star, the gender-bending selfprofessed “Queen of the Internet” who is currently on his “I’m Pregnant, Let’s Party” music tour, is on his way to Seattle.

Star, who phoned me from a massage table in Iowa, was excited to tell me about his forthcoming debut album, his recent tour experiences, and the direction of his career in general.

“It’s been a long time coming. It’s been exciting, there were lots of bumps in the road; I got arrested,” he said.

Star, who has been primarily a partygoer in the past, as well as a professional model, is beginning to change focus. He says he’s starting to take his music more seriously.

Star’s debut full-length album, scheduled for release on September 22, is well balanced and danceable. As for what to expect to hear in the clubs, Star says “Get Away

Dead Baby Bikes Downhill and Messenger Challenge

er’s weekend in Seattle that started with the 13th annual Dead Baby Bikes Downhill and Messenger Challenge on Friday night, August 7, and continued all day Saturday with the North American Hardcourt Bicycle Polo Championships held in Magnuson Park. Screenings of Bike Porn 3 were held Saturday evening at 9 and 11 p.m.

I found myself in the lobby of the theater surrounded by a bunch of sweaty people (mostly dudes) waiting to see some bike porn. I’m not one who minds being in a room with a bunch of sweaty dudes, but this wasn’t the good kind of sweat.

This was at-least-since-10-thatmorning-and-probably-a-littleolder sweat mixed with the smell of scraped skin and chain lube. Not so pleasant.

But I couldn’t leave. First, I was curious. Second, I had dragged Steven along with me so I couldn’t leave. Steven is not so adventurous as I (though infinitely more patient). He appreciates his comfort zone in spite of the fact that I’ve forced him out of it so many times over the past 17 years. by Jessica Price SGN A&E Writer Depeche Mode August 10 Key Arena Depeche Mode is possibly one of the least likely bands one would describe as arena rock, but that’s just what they proved themselves to be at Key Arena this week. Since their inception in 1981, founding and current members Dave Gahan, Martin Gore, and Andy Fletcher have been around the world and back again, blasting through years of club tours before graduating to stadium and arena-size venues in

the late ‘80s.

Gahan has had his share of health problems this year, including a small malignant tumor removed from his bladder, a leg injury in Spain, and – at this printing – a postponed gig in the Bay Area for vocal rest. You wouldn’t know it from Gahan’s clear voice and charisma Monday night. In fact, over the 21-song set, Gahan’s voice was notably strong, and his spirits high.

Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (the source of the current Broadway musical) was published in 1994, and he has shown no signs of stopping. In addition to two Wicked sequels (Son of a Witch, A Lion Among Men), he has brought to life the legends of Cinderella (Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister), Snow White (Mirror Mirror) and several English legends for an original Dickens-style ghost tale in Lost.

Taking time out just before vacation, Mr. Maguire agreed to an interview with the SGN. His softspoken voice suggests that he is a naturally gifted storyteller and he speaks with a welcoming and easy tone.

Rice: Who makes Bike Porn?

Reverend Phil: Fucking perverts, that’s who! The demographics are not so easy to nail down. Many women will speak in confidence about a saddle that “didn’t quite fit right,” but sometimes resulted “in a mystical trip to the store.”

But the debate of what erotica is is largely up to the beer-holder. Thus, putting lube on your chain could be pretty sensual depending on your technique.

Rice: Seattle has a serious film scene. Were any of the films made here?

Reverend Phil: Yes! Seattle has an upcoming master of the craft in Terry O’Neal. Terry was able to organize naked bike polo, a steamy pedicab scene, and a variety of bike shop fantasies. When they play on the big screen the audience goes wild.

Rice: How does Bike Porn make the world a better place?

Reverend Phil: We take the endless possibility of goodness that is inherent in the bicycle, and add porn. But not your typical porn. Sure, there is lots of sex, but more than just that we are offering up a wide assortment of sexual behaviors. Sexual diversity is very healthy, and the sooner we get over these hang-ups, the sooner we can make our lives better. We don’t want typical stuff; we want inspiring erotica. The tour has existed without ever selling a DVD. We want artists to maintain control of their content. I am proud to say that we have never had a leak of any of our movies. We intend to keep it that way. Lastly, and this is for the movie nerds, whereas most movies have to spend a year out on the film festival circuit we only show our content to self-selecting mature audiences. Just getting a theater to return your calls can feel like a major accomplishment.

Rice: I’m totally in, but what do you say to a person who’s not sure Bike Porn is for them?

Reverend Phil: Bike Porn is not for everyone. But there is a big difference between not enjoying porn and being a prude. First off, most porn sucks – literally and figuratively. Most of the sex industry is caught up in a race to the bottom. No wonder so many women are turned off by pornography. You can tell if it is lame by the way it makes you feel when you are done watching it. Most people are pretty horny when they are done watching our films and they are often inspired to create something of their own.

Rice: I have a couple of fantasies in the spank-bank that involve bicycles. However, those fantasies are more about sweaty dudes and jockstraps. Why are bikes sexy?

Reverend Phil: Riding makes us healthier. But more than having an improved resting heart rate and killer legs, bikes themselves are sexy and the act of cycling is sexy.

It could be the freedom we have when traveling under our own power. It could be the attention to detail in those beautiful custom frames. It could be the straining of muscles in rhythmic motions but for whatever reason, it is exciting. Bikes are sexy cause you gotta get on to get off.

Rice: Are Lycra bike shorts sexy?

Reverend Phil: Fashion is as fashion does, and not all shorts are the same. Standing around in padded Lycra can make you look like you dropped a load, but it also can perfectly define all of your muscles. All of them.

I like body hair au naturale and half-shirts over shorty joggers and striped tube socks. However, I also like lean and sweaty athletic guys. I don’t mean jarhead football players who think Jesus actually cares about the outcome of a game. I mean intelligent athletes who eat lentils and read Mother Jones magazine.

In short: bicyclists.

I’ve never experienced Bike Porn before.

However, all that changed Saturday, August 8, at Magnuson Park, Building #47 where Bike Porn 3: Cycle Bound premiered.

I spoke with Reverend Phil, the ringleader of this horny band of bike porn aficionados, before the screening to get myself ready for this new experience. While I’m not sure I know more about bike porn than I did before talking to Reverend Phil, I became more curious than ever.

Scott Rice: Reverend Phil, how did Bike Porn get started?

Reverend Phil: I’m guessing that someone was switching back and forth between pictures of some hot Italian genitalia and pictures of some hot Italian Guerciotti [an Italian bicycle maker]. Perhaps the subject was overcome with increased lust at the confusion between these seemingly very distinct things. Next thing you know people are posting pictures of “bike porn” all over the internet. But we decided to take it to the next level.

Rice: How long have you folks been at it?

Reverend Phil: Our team has been pushing the limits of the emerging bike sex industry for the past three years. We have found that no matter where you go, folks seem to get off their bikes all the time. That’s a joke, son; you can laugh. Bike porn can be very obvious, like the mostly naked bodies gently caressing a fork. It can also be more subtle, like finally cresting a big hill.

Rice: Are all the films made specifically for Bike Porn?

Reverend Phil: Most movies are made especially for our audience. There are quite a few bike movie festivals these days, but the only place to watch any of these movies is at a screening. There are no DVDs for sale and I don’t know if many other movie festivals would be open to the kind of smut we enjoy. Occasionally people have homemade porn movies they made just for themselves, then later when they find out about us. “Hey, honey, we can share that Hi-8 experience of us on the tandem with the rest of the world!”

Rice: Was there a happy ending?

Rice: You came to Seattle last year, right?

Reverend Phil: OMG, we totally molested Georgetown. Bike porn was playing on

the side of a wall 20 feet high. Not sure we are going to be able to go back there soon.

Reverend Phil: Bikers in Seattle are hard.

If you can traverse the hills and highways you have legs and nerves of steel. The ideal location is one where most people feel repressed by some old overbearing force.

Once you tap into that well of latent bike sexuality a revolution is natural.

Rice: Why are you peddling bike porn to Seattle’s LGBT community?

Reverend Phil: Because it is user-defined. We share with our audiences what is submitted, and this year we got more fabglitter than ever before.

Rice: Why is bike porn so Gay? Reverend Phil: I think lots of people expect Gay folk to not be uptight about these kind of things. The audiences for these movies are usually pretty comfortable with their sexuality and aren’t horribly offended by the sexuality of others. The fact is, we are all a little Gay for our rides.

Next up, same film (Tour de Pants). A strapping dude in Lycra peels off his bike shorts and masturbates a bit until he sits on his handlebars to finish up. At this point, one guy who had been tossing out suggestions and pithy one-liners at the screen gets up and marches across the aisle to check in with Reverend Phil. I don’t know what he asked, but I figure it might have gone something like, “Reverend Phil, that dude is putting his handlebars up his butt.” And I imagine Reverend might have replied, “Why, he certainly is, Governor.”

Only one other guy felt compelled to leave. The rest of the audience stayed put.

After this we were treated to a troop of goth Lesbians called Spit-n-Glitter gangfrigging a rough-edged brunette and then to another scene of hot Trans sex and then the whole thing was over and we all sat there breathless, panting, and sweaty – and not the good kind of sweaty.

So why am I glad I went? Because it was nice to see these well-intentioned culturemocking, traffic-clogging, thrill-seeking, iconoclastic bike riders see some real commitment to screwing with the status quo.

The Trans folks in the film are not weekend warriors who ride their double-decker fur covered bicycle down rush hour streets wearing dirty Chucks and smoking cloves.

These Trans folks went the extra mile and I hope every person in that theater took a quick moment to consider the commitment it takes to match a flawed body to one’s psychic gender. It’s not something you do on a lark.

To the crowd’s credit, they cheered enthusiastically as the screen went black. For me, it was a moment when radical Queerness in a number of guises made a mad leap into the consciousness of the straight community – albeit a small subculture within the straight community but an inroad nonetheless.

Reverend Phil ended the show with another production number. This time he performed a duet with a plucky young woman with perky tits. They both ended up fairly naked, the Reverend having stripped to his birthday suit and the plucky young woman to her skivvies. The last number went better than the first, but they still have some finetuning to do. That said, I wish I was comfortable enough with my body to jump up on stage and let my junk air out, too. I’m not, and I didn’t.

Reverend Phil opened the show with an opening number that was, shall we say, wanting. The Reverend seemed a bit like Hugh Jackman at the Academy Awards; he’s cute and you love him and you can’t wait for him to take his clothes off, but you also feel a tiny bit sorry for him.

The real show kicked off with anonymous Lesbian sex. Two girls meet while riding their bikes (hello, bike porn!). The young man behind me and to my left growled provocatively to his buddy, “yeah, Lesbian sex.” Poor bastards, they didn’t realize this was going to be real Lesbian sex with real Lesbians who were little concerned that a straight guy might someday be watching.

These ladies had real tits and nary a lock of bleached blonde hair in sight. They didn’t once look at the camera with dewy eyes to please the young man behind me. They only had eyes for each other.

After the real Lesbian sex, we were treated to some standard pretty girls with little boobs and nasty girls with big boobs and everybody sucking on bicycle seats (by the way, sucking on a bicycle seat is never sexy ... ever). These films were tinged with some innocent BDSM, nothing that strayed too far beyond naughty. Fun stuff, but hardly earthshaking.

All this time, the crowd was pleasantly rowdy without being extreme. There was a little talking back to screen and some judiciously uttered exclamatory one-liners.

Nothing but good clean fun within the bounds of the expected exuberance in light of the whole porn thing and the sweaty dudes.

Then, the earth shook. Tour de Pants is the short film that quieted the room. It took the viewers a few seconds to understand what they were seeing. You see, our good Reverend Phil had a little surprise in store for the anarchic cadre of two-wheeled enthusiasts: Trans people having sex.

It was perfect: Boy meets girl. Boy falls for girl. Boy straps on dildo. The rest is history. From his hard chest to his hairy legs to his cute angel face, the boy was every girl’s dream. I’m not sure everybody in the theater really understood until a little later in the film that what they figured for a dude had

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer Readings of Him and The Jewel in the Manuscript August 17-18 ACT Theatre A special intensive playwriting/acting workshop has taken place in Leavenworth for the last two years. The Icicle Creek Theatre Festival was developed by Allen Fitzpatrick, a well-known and respected actor in Seattle, when he visited Leavenworth and “noticed that there was no professional theatre in the area. I knew some individuals there who strongly advocate for advancement of the arts in that part of the state,” Fitzpatrick explains. He proposed the idea that professional actors and directors from the Seattle area join two playwrights whose plays, close to completion, would be intensively workshopped for a week, and then presented as staged readings to both Leavenworth and Seattle. After feedback sessions, the plays would be fine-tuned and presented around the country for debut productions.

Fitzpatrick reports, “In 2008, we received 315 plays, and this year we received 233 plays.” They found playwrights through their website (www. www.iciclecreekact. com) and contacts at regional theaters throughout the U.S., and literary agents.

Also, members of the Playwrights Center (Minneapolis) and New Dramatists (NY) solicit their members to send manuscripts.

The plays are then distributed to a team of readers. Eventually, the top 25 or 30 are scrutinized and two plays are chosen.

The playwrights are brought in, actors are cast and, as Fitzpatrick explains, “Once in Leavenworth [August 8, this year], our two playwrights hunker down with the acting company, the directors and the dramaturge

for seven days in a row, rehearsing several hours each day.” The playwrights do rewriting and give changes to the actors the next day.

Four readings will be done in Leavenworth on August 15 and 16, and two readings at ACT, here in Seattle, on August 17 and 18. This year, for the first time, a public audience is invited and tickets are being sold. The two plays are Him by Daisy Foote (daughter of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Horton Foote, and a produced playwright), in which three siblings struggle to keep the family business afloat in a rapidly changing world that threatens to leave them behind, and The Jewel in the Manuscript by Rosemary Zibart (a journalist, screenplay writer, and children’s book writer turned playwright), which examines events in the life of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Forced to complete a new novel in a month, the ill and despairing writer hires a young stenographer, and as they work together she brings sympathy and order into his life.

The last two seasons’ plays have moved into the next levels of production. 2007’s play Atomic Farmgirl by C. Denby Swanson was produced Off-Broadway by the Drilling Company shortly after its appearance at ICTF. 2007’s Dov and Ali by Anna Ziegler received a successful London production last year and opened this summer Off-Broadway. 2008’s Charm by Kathleen Cahill won the Connecticut Commission on the Arts’ highest award for playwriting, and will receive a full production in 2010 by the Salt Lake Acting Company. 2008’s Kingdom of Dust by Stephanie Timm, now retitled On The Nature of Dust, has received offers for production from two theatre companies.

Icicle Creek Festival presents readings at ACT

We are surrounded by beautiful wilderness; the entire company is saturated in the work and in communion with each other, 24 hours a day for nine days, sharing meals and cabins.”

A new program this year is a Theatre Conservatory for Youth that will be conducted on the same grounds as the new plays festival, one week earlier. “We have 22 students signed up, half from the Leavenworth area, and half from Seattle and environs,” Fitzpatrick details. When asked if Leavenworth youth might be at some disadvantage with theater experience, Fitzpatrick reports, “Some of our Seattle students may never have had any theatre experience, and some of our Leavenworth kids might have been in numerous shows, so I can’t generalize.”

It’s a “sleep-away” camp, as Fitzpatrick

puts it, and pretty expensive. “The program is $925 for sleepover students and $650 for day students. But scholarships were available; we gave out many to the students,” Fitzpatrick is pleased to say.

ACT Theatre provides use of their space, promotion and marketing (and some staff support). 99.99% of ICTF funding comes from the Icicle Fund in Leavenworth. The Icicle Fund is committed to supporting the arts in the Wenatchee Valley through innovative collaboration.

All six playwrights, over three years, have been women, a somewhat startling statistic.

Fitzpatrick reports, “It’s been entirely coincidental.” Fitzpatrick gives an opinion about the readings this year compared to last. “The plays last year were both somewhat ‘whimsical,’ and this year’s are very different – much more kitchen-sink realism.” ACT’s Box Office is handling tickets for the Seattle showings: 206-292-7676.

Maguire: In Mirror Mirror, I took as my theme the costs of maturation, of a child and of a civilization. Set during the High Italian Renaissance, I worked my theme through several plot strands: that of the Snow White character, Bianca de Nevada, coming of age; that of the dwarves, holdovers from a superstitious pagan past in danger of losing their way in the approaching dawn of reason; and that of the epochal city-states struggling against the Papal states for power and independence. I realized that the Borgias were notorious as competent poisoners … the entire story fell into place. Lucrezia as a wicked stepmother capable of poisoning an apple, Lucrezia as a famous beauty of her time, Lucrezia slandered by her family’s enemies as having been the lover of her father, the Pope … you can’t make this stuff up, as Dave Barry says. It was too good to pass by.

Andrews-Katz: Has adopting children influenced your writing?

Maguire: I know great works were inspired by parents telling stories to their actual children: Winnie-the-Pooh, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan were all originally stories invented to amuse real children. Salman Rushdie has done the same thing with two children’s books himself, for two sons.

My own children have not inspired the same font of creativity in me, or not yet. This is a fault of my genes, of course, not theirs.

Andrews-Katz: How is your mother’s death [in childbirth] related to your view of fairy tales as a child, and your eventual revisionist retelling as an adult?

Maguire: I leave that for others to comment upon; I’m not a psychologist. I do however think that my early love of fairy tales was perhaps enhanced by the condition in which most tales begin; a mother dies leaving a child to fend for himself or herself. I certainly didn’t fend for myself, but was benefited by a gloriously competent stepmother. I responded to the plight of the abandoned, the marginalized, the disenfranchised, which populate the fairy tales as we know them.

Andrews-Katz: You said that with Lost you were hoping to break out from the “revisionist” category. What made you decide to go back to it?

Maguire: First, I should remark that “revisionist” is a term others have used about my work, and I think not entirely correctly.

Because a novel relies on previously used material does not, in my mind, constitute a revisionist tale. I wouldn’t call Rushdie’s novel [The Satanic Verses] a revision of the Koran or of a sacred tradition but a wholly new work that relies on common cultural understandings. Maybe my own problem with that term is that “revisioning” seems so close to “revising.” I never did intend Lost to be a retelling of anything but a new story with references to 19th-century materials I thought readers would know: not only Jack the Ripper and Ebenezer Scrooge, but also Charles Dickens. I had to negotiate with my publisher for the privilege to try my hand at a psychological ghost story; she [Judith Regan] wanted me to stick with fairy tale tropes. I bargained that if she allowed me to publish Lost I would give her a Mirror Mirror next. She agreed.

Andrews-Katz: Where did the idea come

Gregory Maguire and his husband, the painter Andy Newman, have adopted three children together. As co-founder of Children’s Literature New England, children’s literacy is an important issue for Mr. Maguire. The CLNE Inc. stated mission is to elevate the awareness of the significance of literature in the lives of children. “We do that,” says Maguire, “through holding institutes and colloquiums at which teachers, librarians, parents, editors ... come together to discuss classic and contemporary children’s books in the light of expansive literary themes.” Maguire is the author of more than 20 children’s books and continues to write for both children and adults.

by Rod Parke SGN A&E Writer Wagner’s RING: Das Rheingold/Die Walküre August 9-10 Seattle Opera, McCaw Hall The good news is that the current Seattle Opera Wagner RING is even more glorious than its previous two incarnations. The sets seem even more beautiful, and the opening scene of the Rheinmaidens swimming 20 feet above the stage is just magnificent. The stage direction is, for the most part, totally engaging in its focus on how the characters interact. The conducting by Robert Spano shows growth in structural sense and in the tight but sympathetic connection between pit and stage. And the cast, with one exception, could hardly be better.

The one exception, and the only bad news, is the Brünnhilde of Janice Baird. With Seattle’s long string of superb Brünnhildes (Uta Vinsing, Rita Hunter, Linda Kelm, Jane Eaglen, etc.), Baird brought us to a new low. The middle voice was so weak and curdled with vibrato that she could sometimes hardly be heard. While the tops were generally good, they sometimes fell short of the pitch. (The voice did improve somewhat as the evening went on.) But even worse, her twitchy acting never struck this viewer as convincing. Too many gestures, strange facial expressions, and a general lack of magnetism and commanding stature wiped out any significance in her appearance. In fact, in the scene with her sisters (HALFsisters?), she failed to stand out at all. A Brünnhilde without gravitas. (Test question: Did Erda give birth to Brünnhilde’s sisters?)

Over 63 percent of the cast is new to this summer’s production. Of 20-some singers, I’ll limit this review to the highlights,

of which fortunately there are many. You will not find on any current stage a better Alberich, Wotan, Fricka, Hunding, or Siegmund than these. Ever since his debut here in Andrea Chenier, Richard Paul Fink has continued to wow us with the intensity of his dark, powerful voice and the intelligence of both his singing and acting. As a fantastically athletic Alberich, Fink leaves nothing to be desired. His voice is so strong that one might think Seattle Opera was using microphones (which they never do except for off-stage moments, such as when Alberich magically disappears).

About Greer Grimsley’s Wotan, one could go on and on in praise. A beautiful, superpowerful voice of many colors and expressive dynamics was at the service of a totally engaging artist who made even Wotan’s long monologue gripping. Now in his mid-50s, Grimsley has lost none of his intensity and has only gained in effectiveness. At the end of Die Walküre, he showed not the slightest signs of fatigue, easily cutting through the full orchestra as he commanded Loge to set a fire around Brünnhilde’s rock-mountain.

In a scene I used to dislike, Stephanie Blythe’s Fricka nearly stole the show as she flooded us with gorgeous sounds, while popping Wotan’s balloon of self-deception.

I doubt seriously that any Fricka has topped hers in any way. Her voice was super-rich, unbelievably powerful, and perfectly even from top to bottom. And it was at the service of a passionately effective artist of the highest intelligence. Blythe’s smarts made her argument with Wotan all the more compelling. I could bathe in her sound all night!

In his debut at Seattle Opera, Stuart Skelton’s Siegmund could hardly have been more impressive. His tenor was almost powerful enough to recall Jon Vickers. A solid technique supported singing of beauty, power and a lyrical line. He was even physically

attractive (a believable twin to Sieglinde), and acted convincingly. Also a Seattle debut was the towering bass of Andrea Silvestrelli. While his Fasolt was marred by physical fatigue from an emergency flight to Italy and back (the death of his father), his Hunding the next night was most impressive. A man of great height and considerable girth, Silvestrelli had a voice to match his fearful physical presence. As dark a bass as I have ever heard, he frightened us all with his perfectly pitched acting. Only the very top notes gave him difficulty.

In the tiny role of Froh, Jason Collins impressed with his fresh, strong tenor and engaged stage presence.

In an article next week, I will review other aspects of the RING, including the final two operas, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung.

Perfect Getaway, my mind kept wandering to the breathtaking aerial views of Hawaii being splashed across the screen at the beginning, then to how blue Mila Jovovich’s eyes were, to whether or not that was her real hair color (except for her short red ‘do in The Fifth Element, she always has ravenblack locks).

So, you can see that obviously the first (very long) 20 minutes of Getaway doesn’t do anything out of the ordinary schlocky plot that Hollywood’s been churning out since last year’s stunner The Strangers (a far better movie that creeped me out from the very first scene). Think Last House On The Left meets U-Turn meets any other forgettable movie of the week thriller done in the last several months, and you have the plot of this film.

True, Jovovich, who plays a manically happy new bride, and zany Steve Zahn, her equally off-kilter new hubby, do have good chemistry and are watchable together, and there are even a few scary moments that made me, my date and the screening audience jump a bit at the beginning of the film.

Still, it’s hard to keep your attention glued to a screen that keeps showing you travel picture shots and letting the actors fend for themselves for the most part – which they don’t do all that convincingly, either.

The plot’s nothing new. Zahn and Jovovich are a honeymooning couple ecstatic about their trip to Hawaii, and yet in the first couple of minutes it is established that there’ve been some murders on one of

the islands and then an implication that any man and woman they meet could be these criminals. Of course, they meet a sleazy pair, who put them on edge, then another pair who charm, but also put them off a bit with the boyfriend’s nutty ramblings about one adventure after another. “Oh, we are so scared,” I wanted to say.

Notable is some stuff about girl bonding between Jovovich and the Southerndrawling girl part of the other couple – actually the best part of this loser of a film – a freshly killed goat, killed by the boyfriend and graphically dressed in front of Jovovich and Zahn, but nothing else remotely creepy.

Oh yes, there’s a twist, which I won’t reveal in case after reading this review you still want to plunk down honest dollars for this clunker. That part’s a little eerie, but it goes nowhere fast and does nothing to save the previous lost hour of Getaway. Save your dough and wait for the video.

The Fray August 6 Paramount Theatre Despite what you’ve heard, pop music is alive and kicking. It may not receive the critical glory that its indie counterpart gets, but when executed with high marks, it’s just as difficult to ignore. The Fray is one artist helping to keep the genre afloat, producing a worthy resume of mid-tempo ballads and piano-fueled love songs that might come across as lightweight to some, but the filled room of fans last week at the Paramount – who paid upwards of $50 to see them in concert – would undoubtedly disagree.

The Denver-based unit opened their show, a penultimate performance of their springsummer outing, with “Over My Head (Cable Car),” a Grammy-nominated track from the group’s 2005 debut. Lead singer Isaac Slade immediately commanded the stage with his soft growl and sexy appearance – squeezed into a tight ensemble of black skinny denims and white V-neck shirt, this shaved-headed frontman made it hard to pay attention to anything else happening on stage.

“Good evening to you, Seattle!”, shouted Slade to a packed main floor and two soldout balconies. Near the end of the show, he would reveal to the audience that his wed-

ding night two years ago took place here in Seattle, on Capitol Hill.

Illuminated by a stage featuring two sets of semi-circular lighted panels in an array of colors and a rectangular overhead screen with live shots of the band, The Fray played selections from both of their albums, the most recent being this year’s self-titled work. “Syndicate” was marvelous, backed by a paneling of green bulbs and strobes, while the mega single “How to Save a Life” was done amidst a wall of large tealightshaped fixtures that dimmed as the song came to a close.

“Trust Me,” “Say When,” and an incredible rendition of “Enough for Now” each made appearances on the set list. At times, guitarist Dave Welsh sneaked in and took charge of lead vocals. Considering that The Fray is known for its quiet side with a string of adult contemporary hits, they certainly put out a lot of great sound with spontaneous morsels of hard rock. It should be mentioned that a couple of touring musicians were included in the lineup.

On “Never Say Never,” Slade invited concertgoers to join in the chorus and within seconds the entire theater was singing at top volume to the current radio favorite. Another biggie, “You Found Me,” wonderfully finished the four-piece’s main set.

special song?” asked Slade when The Fray was called back to the stage for an encore by a thunderously loud crowd. With that, the quartet lunged into the best five minutes of the performance, a gorgeous and delicate version of Kanye West’s “Heartless” that climaxed with Ben Wysocki’s gentle tapping on drums – seriously, it blew me far, far away.

“Seattle, we’ve been here two times, and this was the best time!” yelled an exuberant Slade. He continued by saying that some of his best friends and family lived in the Emerald City.

“Can you guys singer louder than Portland?” questioned Slade during “All At Once,” and the audience filled the room again with eager-to-please voices. The show came to a finale with a tender, acoustic rendition of “Happiness,” from the new album,

as streaks of colorful lights zipped vertically in the background.

I’m not sure exactly what I expected from my first live experience of The Fray, but I guessed it would fall somewhere between mellow and delightful – and while it was a little of both, it was also quite moving and layered with brilliant elements of pop.

Around me, couples swayed and kissed – these were the songs that maybe brought them together, or ones they go home to and snuggle up with, or ones that will be played at memorable occasions in their near future.

Regardless of whether The Fray’s music is considered cool by critics’ standards, the group’s fans have already made them international stars and top-selling artists. To perform in front of a full venue that knows your music by heart is simply icing on a very delicious cake.

it truly belongs in the opening credits of a dark western. Assembled fans, several that I recognized from previous Blakes shows, mouthed the words as drummer Bob Husak pounded determinedly on drums.

The Blakes sounded different to me on this night, in a very good way; whereas at Chop Suey in early 2008 the band gave a slamming rock concert, the songs on this evening were janglier, looser and riding on the fringe of rockabilly. Maybe it was the disco ball spinning over the stage or leftover energy from U.S.E., or maybe I was in a jumpier mood, but the riffs sounded catchier, as if the trio tinkered with the arrangements and turned them into dance-rock remixes.

“Two Times,” a signature hit by The Blakes, had nearly the entire floor singing the lyrics – if anything, Garnet Keim may have held back a tad on vocals, but the crowd seasoned it by loudly chiming the chorus. “Vampire” was my personal favorite

at The Crocodile, and I pray for an extended version down the road because it’s got a terrific guitar riff and really gets people swaying in various directions – a young woman at my side danced circles around her boyfriend like a ballerina on a frosting high.

In the coming months, The Blakes will put out a new album, the aforementioned Souvenir, and head out on a national tour. It’s not a do or die scenario, but the band is hoping this will give them the kind of exposure blessed upon fellow local artists Fleet Foxes and Death Cab for Cutie. The potential is certainly there, as is the worthy material and hometown approval, but this doesn’t calculate to instant success – it’s a whole other ballgame out there in the music world beyond Seattle, with no guarantees and few second chances.

But I have a feeling The Blakes will keep trying, and trying, until the timing is just right.

Star’s Myspace profile, which reportedly receives more views than any other profile, has plenty of information on who he is and what he’s about, but he says that a lot of what’s there is sarcastic. “I like to make fun of myself,” he said.

Although Star has become an inspiration and idol for many, he says he doesn’t think anyone should look up to anyone. “We all make mistakes,” he said, admitting that he’s made plenty, but also saying that he doesn’t regret anything.

Nonetheless, Star has certainly become an icon in his own right. His career and rise to stardom have challenged heteronormative gender roles. I asked Star if he thought his career would help challenge these gender and dress roles further. “I hope that it does, but there are so many ignorant people....

Sometimes I feel like we’re still in the ‘60s.”

“I’m kind of jaded,” Star said.

Although not avidly political, Star fully supports the Gay rights movement. “I did the NOH8 campaign photo shoot,” he said.

Star hasn’t yet decided what he plans to do in Seattle before and after the show. “Maybe have an orgy,” he mused, “or have sex in woods.”

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer The Blakes August 3 The Crocodile For a band climbing its way up, the toughest crowd is always the one in your backyard – especially if your backyard happens to be Seattle, where rock stars are born and bred.

Local audiences have seen and heard it all, so the bar is quite high for any act trying to catch a break. Fortunately for The Blakes, it appears they’ve been greenlit by the jaded night owls of the Emerald City – and lucky for us, they continue to capitalize on their potential.

The hard-rocking trio hopped onstage shortly after U.S.E., a local pop-tronica ensemble, had everyone sweating to the oldies for an hour non-stop – this alone was a tough act to follow because the energy was through the roof and everyone wanted to keep partying. The Blakes went to work, and midway through the opening number, “Little Bit About You,” they had feet mov-

ing and heads bobbing, even from those at the back bar ordering the next round of PBRs. A noticeably slimmer Garnet Keim, lead singer-guitarist of this vigorous threesome, seemed calmer, more relaxed and more focused than in previous concerts, where he comes across as a little over-anxious. There was something very tranquil about his appearance on Monday night, which lent itself well to the overall performance.

The Blakes did a rousing version of “Music Together,” a song that sounded rather incredible on this dance-athon evening. In fact, I wish they’d play this tune more because it has such a great vibe.

There was new material introduced from the group’s forthcoming album, Souvenir, but it was familiar favorites that delighted concertgoers most, some of who arrived with hand-held fans and waved much-needed air onto drenched bassist Snow Keim.

“A Fire” was slick and slightly intense, while “Don’t Bother Me” was bouncy and fun. As usual, “Pistol Grip” was badass –

But not anymore. Star has tour dates scheduled throughout next year. “I still do a lot of photo shoots for fun,” he said, but music is the direction he’s taking.

Star, who’s been on his current tour for about three weeks, alluded to being a good boy. “I’ve only slept with one person from one of the opening bands,” he said.

He’s enjoyed seeing his fans at shows and although Star has a large younger fan base, he says that on his current tour, he’s beginning to see more and more Gay fans, which is refreshing for him as his largest fan base has generally been teen girls. Of course, he adores all his fans, but says that “young divas trying to wear a lot of makeup” can lead to a lot of negativity. Star aspires to let them know to not follow conformist ideas of what is beautiful and to express themselves openly.

“I want them to know that they don’t have to be a manufactured, airbrushed blonde prostitute,” said Star. “At the end of the day, I’m all about my fans – see, I’m actually a nice person!”

When I asked Star who inspires him, he said he really doesn’t have a lot of idols.

He’s inspired by fashion magazines in general, and makeup, but recalled when he was little how much he adored the Spice Girls.

by James Whitely SGN Contributing Writer Four dancers from the Puget Sound area competed at the Second World OutGames in Copenhagen, Denmark from July 25-August 2.

Seattle local Marcella Benson-Quaziena won two gold medals and one bronze medal in the beginning line dance competition.

Another Seattle local, Jim Drew, won two gold medals and a silver medal in the intermediate line dance competition. Both Benson-Quaziena and Drew also won special cup trophies for overall performance in their respective categories.

The country western dance competition was held about midway through the Out-

Games, and was organized primarily by The International Association of Gay/Lesbian Country Western Dance Clubs (IAGLCWDC), a member organization of Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association (GLISA), which largely sponsored the OutGames. In addition to the line dance, there was couples country western, and dance team country western.

Referring to the dance team competition, “I think of it as synchronized swimming on the dance floor,” said Drew.

“I’ve been doing line dancing competitions for several years now,” he said.

Drew has been involved with IAGLCWDC since 1995, through the local member organization Rain Country Dance Association.

Drew also won a silver medal in the Mr. Leather OutGames competition. In addition to appearing in leather, competitors do a “presentation” or fantasy,” a leather-themed skit with sexual overtones, which is often funny, but sometimes very serious.

The Second World OutGames, a sporting and cultural event for the LGBT community included over 5,500 participants from nearly 100 countries. The OutGames is structured in three different major event categories: human rights, cultural activities, and sports. The next OutGames will take place in Antwerp, Belgium in 2013. Amazingly wonderful performances at SFDI

Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation August 7-8 Broadway Performance Hall At the end of last weekend’s SFDI (Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation), an annual dance festival that brings together stellar local talents and up-and coming-dancers in a weeklong explosion of workshops, dance recitals and public performances, I sat scratching my head.

Unfortunately, not having my date du jour (as last Saturday was a work night for my partner), I could not turn to her and go “honey, what was that, and is it okay for us to leave now?” So, I turned to the couple next to me and they okayed my exit from Broadway Performance Hall, where the performance took place both Friday and Saturday nights.

I don’t want it to seem that the final piece was in any way something I didn’t enjoy.

(Imagine a large number of dancers who just get up from the audience and go onto the stage at the prompting of the hostess for the night, Lila Hurwitz. At times it just seemed like ordinary folks interrupting the program in progress.) It’s just that the ending took me by surprise. And truly, that is a good thing, even a bit refreshing, though it was something I wasn’t prepared for. Still, watching the improvisational movements – including at one point a shredding of an SGN paper by another “audience member,”

who was really one of the dancers in the audience – was at times funny, and yet I felt like a control freak who had the rug pulled out from under her.

The first piece for the evening, “Together,” performed by two female dancers was a little more orderly, though it still had that fresh, raw edge that prevailed in this, a most dazzling evening of dance. Coming second, “Walking In Istanbul,” seemed to speak to the condition of aging (as it was danced by a single, older female dancer) and that human experience called memory. This was a lush piece that I particularly enjoyed as I am older myself.

But aside from a moment of uncertainty that came with a piece that charged the audience with creating an end to the “Faculty Improv” performance, I loved this program of sparkling talent, particular that of French dancer Benoit Lachamre, who danced to silence while holding a CD player and wearing headphones. The end of that piece, where he let the audience hear that he’d been listening to Janice Joplin’s cover of “Summertime,” was absolutely mouth-watering, and at times it was funny, too.

At the end of the evening, although feeling I should have stayed longer to see what came next or maybe mingled a bit with the dancers (who by then were leaving the stage – something that happened so seamlessly, it felt like part of the improv dance), I bounded out into the night, swinging my black hips down the street, happy to have witnessed such amazingly wonderful performances – that conclusion I came to without having anyone to ask but myself.

Crowd celebrates poetry at Ladies First

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer First, before I let you know that I completely enjoyed the recent Ladies First poetry/hip hop/music evening put on by CARA (Communities Against Rape and Abuse), having gotten into Seattle during the heyday of groups like Red Sky Poetry Theatre and several other similar poetry groups, I wonder whatever happened to just plain poetry – not the slam variety that’s become so accepted that even McDonald’s has used the model in several of their ads. I mean, aren’t there any other people in Seattle (besides me and a couple of other poets I remember from when I used to read on open mics around town) who write about love, nature and occasionally do what could be considered an “angry poem”?

Okay, now that I’ve said that, let me go on to say that the poetry and music program put on by CARA as part of their monthly Ladies First evening was delightfully diverse, and even at one point included a team-up between tap dancer Pamela Yasutake and singer/violinist Akua Kariamu (who has worked

did. “In Chains” built up the excitement, followed by “Wrong” and “Hole To Feed” from the band’s 12th studio album Sounds of the Universe. Classics “Walking In My Shoes,” crowd-pleaser “It’s No Good” and a handful of tracks from Black Celebration (“A Question of Time,” “Fly On The Windscreen”) stayed true to form.

The set was minimal and modern, allowing Gore’s flashy silver sequin suit optimum visibility, while Gahan looked trim and sexy in his trademark vest and fitted black trousers.

Gore stayed up front to share vocal duties and play guitar throughout the evening.

During “I Feel You,” he even engaged in a double head-banging session alongside Gahan, touring drummer Christian Eigner and keyboardist Peter Gordeno – don’t ever say that Depeche Mode can’t rock out. One of the most shocking things about seeing the band live is how lively and full-tilt they really are. At the same time, they can drop things down a notch, showcasing Gore’s pitch-perfect vocals, nearly operatic on tunes like “Jezebel.” Gore flexed those vocal chords, motioned away as if conducting an orchestra. A little on the dramatic side, but then again, he’s earned it.

“Policy of Truth” kicked off the show’s second half; Gahan shimmying, shaking and spinning in circles as he has always done, mic stand flying above his head. All of the band’s eleven studio albums have hit the top 10, and “Enjoy The Silence,” “Never Let Me Down Again” and “In Your Room” reminded me just how many truly great songs they’ve written over the years.

Two tight encores featuring kinky trio “Stripped,” “Strangelove” and, yes, “Master and Servant” made the night complete. Gahan, Gore, and even the ever-somber Fletcher looked as if they were having the time of their lives, and the audience clapped and cheered right along with them. For the final encore, the quartet broke out the pounding

with famed New York performance poets, The Last Poets, among other notables) to give the audience an even stronger performance piece called “Prophetess Prayer.”

The effect was nothing short of stunning, and won many cheers and claps from the grateful audience.

Also on the program was Chelsea, who also works at the CD Forum, and who composed a love poem for dancer Camille Brown when Brown was in town for a performance a few months back. Chelsea read that poem, as well as another powerful poem speaking to issues of race relations in America, which again drew understanding cheers and much applause from the audience, as did Chelsea’s comments from the stage to her little daughter, Raven.

CARA has T-shirts and hoodies for sale, and the funds generated go to support CARA’s work with communities of people of color, including work with Somalian and Ethiopian women who are working to be more independent in Seattle.
