Back to her rock-out roots, the tough-andgruff musician/mother/activist makes a roaring return with the uplifting Fearless Love, her follow-up to 2007’s sociopoliticalpowered The Awakening.

We spoke with Etheridge, who not only discussed surviving cancer during the last decade and the life lessons she learned in the process, but also how she’s embracing change – a new sound, touring band and the return of those hot, long locks.

The play itself is simplicity personified: six scenes, six events, six supporting characters. Eric Weiss – “our hero,” as Lund describes him in an enlightening “Director’s Notes” section in the program – is called back to Brooklyn by the illness and expected death of his father. A father/son reunion opens the play in a hospital room. Scene two features a hospital cafeteria reunion between Weiss and his best friend from high school. Ira, the friend, is convinced that he is featured in Weiss’ novel, an obviously autobiographical account of his Brooklyn days.

Tim Bond, having moved on from years of helming the now-gone Group Theatre, brings back his directing prowess, co-producing Fences with Syracuse Stage, where the play will move on to. He’s given Seattle another gift to remember.

Fences Seattle Repertory Theatre Through April 18 As the lights rise on the scrappy, rundown (but beautiful) set of William Bloodgood, with hard-packed ground giving way to scrawny patches of grass, you know you’re not in downtown Seattle anymore. The cadence of inner-city black “dialect” fills the stage, as Troy Maxson (James A. Williams) and Bono (William Hall, Jr.) drink a pint together and talk smack about women and sex at the end of the work week. You’re not at the Seattle Rep anymore; you’re somewhere in Wilson-land.

August Wilson’s Fences isn’t made up of “action” and “events.” It’s rooted in time and place and in the experiences of the family, and creeps under your skin like an insistent bass rhythm, mimicking the sound of your heart. While details of the “black experience” in the 1950s abound and the challenges of discrimination are abundant, the universal struggle of mother and father, husband and wife are still there for all to identify with.

Troy has succeeded in life and has risen from an improbable series of hardships to become a breadwinner, homeowner, father, and loving husband. He tells of hating his father and escaping from home at age 13 after an enormous beating, graduating to becoming a thief and killing a man, and going to the penitentiary, yet he manages to turn his life around and find a good woman and a job as a garbage man. But even with a fine wife

like Rose (Kim Staunton) and a smart, achieving son like Cory (Stephen Tyrone Williams, no relation), there is a bitterness he can’t get rid of which keeps him a little restless.

As played by the growling, powerful, barrel-chested Williams, Troy is free with his love for his woman – and even his best friend – yet can’t find that same ease to talk to his needy son. He describes his hate of his evil father, but doesn’t see the correlations in his own treatment of his sons. He seems to believe that his son should see the

evidence of his feelings because he has done his duty and provided for him every day. He semi-humorously declares that the rules don’t say he has to “like” his son, but never adds that, like him or not, he loves him.

Staunton (as Rose) starts off a little shrill, but becomes the steady and supportive wife Rose demands of herself. Wilson writes the tragedy of adultery into their marriage, but allows Rose to reclaim her strength and independence by announcing her choices: to stay in the marriage, stick by her husband, and raise his love child as her own. Rose surmounts victimhood with eyes wide open.

plication. The third scene finds Weiss in his father’s apartment, reviewing a lifetime of memories. His soon-to-be ex-wife joins him for a trip down memory lane.

The fourth scene shifts to Los Angeles, where a literary groupie tries to seduce Weiss. The fifth scene finds Weiss in consultation with a Hollywood producer, a woman who “loves” his screenplay adaptation but finds it “too ethnic.” Tyler Shaw, the prospective star of the Tinseltown version, breathes fresh air into the scene. In the play’s final moments, scene six finds childhood friend Ira back in Weiss’ life. “Family, faith and friendship,” as Lund notes, are life’s basic needs – a lesson that Weiss learns, or at least starts to learn, in Brooklyn Boy. Taproot’s cast is sound in every way.

Jeff Berryman, a Taproot veteran as an actor and as a playwright, anchors the show as Eric Weiss. Robert Gallaher as Eric’s father, Manny, is another strength to the production. Nicholas Beach, a Taproot newcomer, is bright as the dim Tyler. Alex Robertson’s Ira Zimmer is the only character with two scenes with Weiss, and he makes the most of both of them. Lisa Peretti, Jesse Notehelfer, and Nikki Visel all add solid support as the three women in Weiss’ life: wife, groupie, and producer. Most of the cast members have numerous credits at Taproot. All are making welcome returns.

Brooklyn Boy is a quiet play with a likeable group of people. Humor abounds despite the seriousness of the play’s themes. It’s a “little show” that can get lost in the broad scope of Seattle’s diverse theater scene. It definitely deserves to be seen.

Brooklyn Boy continues at Taproot through April 17. The theater makes its home in the Greenwood district, at 85th just off Greenwood Ave. N. Ticket information is available at (206) 781-9707. Next on the Taproot schedule is Charley’s Aunt, the cross-dressing Victorian classic, or as Taproot’s clever poster design notes, “1892’s Hit Comedy of the Season.” It runs May 12-June 12.

Margulies, incidentally, is having a great season. The playwright’s earlier Collected Stories is opening this month in New York with Linda Lavin in a leading role. A new play just closed off-Broadway and his early plays continue to be audience and critical favorites in regional productions.

Celebrating 37 Years!

by Miryam Gordon SGN A&E Writer The Twilight Zone Live Theater Schmeater Through April 17 Take three episodes of The Twilight Zone, place in separate holders, grate huge amounts of cheese over the top of each, bake and serve. Theater Schmeater has been providing three-episode productions of Twilight Zone since they came into existence back around 1992. They started out making it a late-night program, but in the last couple of years, they’ve moved it to the normal 8 p.m. time.

As directed by Tim Moore – who plays a bang-up Rod Serling each night – these are played “straight” off the script, with Twilight Zone music and eerie soap-opera-style sound effects, and actors who take everything seriously. It ends up being hysterical.

Plus, the Schmee adds commercials.

This outing, the episodes are “The Midnight Sun,” “The Chaser” and “Shadow Play.” At the beginning of each episode, you’re told, by Rod Serling, that you will be entering The Twilight Zone. Dun duh dun!

“The Midnight Sun” tells the story of people living in upper New York state, where Earth’s orbit has been disturbed and the sun shines 24 hours a day. There is no night and the power grid is failing, so there is no electricity. Earth has gotten so close to the sun that the temperature is dangerously hot. Norma (Heather Gautschi) is a painter. Her neighbor, Mrs. Bronson (Karen Jo Fairbrook), gets upset with for painting pictures of hot suns. She asks the painter to

paint something with cool water. When Mrs. Bronson sees the painting of the waterfall, she loves it, but dies. Then Norma wakes to find herself back in “reality,” which is that everything is freezing and there is only moonlight, and the Earth has moved far away from the sun, and the world will soon freeze.

“The Chaser” has the common theme of a man who loves a woman who doesn’t care for him at all. Trick Danneker plays Roger, who is in love with Leila (Heather Gautschi), who doesn’t want to give him the time of day. He is guided to a strange shop and the proprietor, Professor Daemon (a lovely, ominous John Q. Smith), gives him a love potion, but warns him he might not like the consequences. Of course, the potion works wonderfully and Leila loves Roger so much that she’s like a faithful dog. Roger comes back to the professor to find out if there is an antidote, but the only antidote offered is to kill Leila. There is no middle ground available. Gautschi gets every beat right as she is at first disdainful and then completely, and realistically, devoted.

In “Shadow Play,” a man has the same terrible dream every night. He dreams he is tried, convicted, and executed for a murder, and every night wakes up from being electrocuted. He tries each time to tell the people in his dream that they will all die if he is executed, but they don’t listen in time to stop the execution. We see him (Patrick Allcorn) struggle through one more such dream as he tells the prosecutor (Larry Leggett) and the district attorney (John Q. Smith) his story one more time. Will he beat the executioner this time?

“I am going to make sure everyone has a great time,” he said. “I will be bringing all of my gear and doing something special at Neighbours. I just have fun when I’m on stage. I love looking out over the crowd and watching everyone dance while I am singing.”

Although Blake is best known for his first runner-up status on American Idol, the singer/songwriter (who is also an accomplished DJ) says that these days, “it’s all about dance music.”

“I have always loved the dance scene,” he told SGN. “Dance music is great because it is all about having a good time. When a good song comes on, it doesn’t matter if you are Gay or straight, everyone comes together and enjoys the music.”

“Heartbreak On Vinyl” is an infectious dance track. Blake says he wrote the song in 40 minutes. “You gotta strike when the iron is hot,” he said. “I wrote the song in response to the closure of my favorite Seattle record shop, Easy Street, which went out of business. The first couple of lines in the song say, ‘Easy Street is empty, the silence of the Sound.’ That is a reference to Puget Sound. As a collector, audiophile, and artist, it’s really hard for me to see all these amazing stores being closed due to the digital revolution. Thus, ‘Heartbreak On Vinyl’ is a metaphor for these great shops.”

“The single is doing great on the Billboard dance chart,” said Blake. “The response from DJs has been wonderful. I’m really

proud of ‘Heartbreak On Vinyl,’ I feel like I really made a solid album. I just go with my instincts and what feels right in that certain moment. I’ve always been an artist influenced by dance, though.”

Blake, who recently performed at a Los Angeles, HRC dinner and participated in the NO on 8 Campaign for same-sex marriage equality, told SGN that he is excited to perform for his Seattle LGBT fans.

“I grew up with a Gay best friend,” said Blake. “I’ve always been open and honest about that. I’ve never really thought in terms of who is Gay and who is straight. I appreciate all my fans and I am aware that I have a large Gay fan base.”

“I support my openly Gay friends as much as I can,” Blake told SGN. “It is great to see that, although there is still a struggle for LGBT equality, Washington state is making headway. I am proud to be from a state where the residents have taken the initiative to promote equality.”

Blake told SGN he is no stranger to Neighbours nightclub. “I love it,” he said. “One of the first Seattle clubs I went to was Neighbours. It just feels right to perform at the venue. I have a lot of good memories of that place.”

Blake says that his fans will get a chance to see him after he is done performing. “I always hang out after the set – it is one of my favorite things to do,” he said. “I hang out all night. I love meeting with my fans.”

“The last few years have been an amazing ride,” he told SGN. “I couldn’t do what I love to do without the continued support from my fans. I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart.”

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer I’d been told before my phone call with Corinne Bailey Rae that 10 minutes would be the total allotted time with her, as compared to 20 minutes with Phoenix or nearly a half-hour with Silversun Pickups. Indeed, 10 short minutes was all I got with the British singer-songwriter, who in 2006 soared to the top of the Adult Contemporary and Pop charts with her debut single “Put Your Records On,” which eventually nabbed her Grammy nominations for Record and Song of the Year. An overnight success story, Rae was on the fast track to international stardom when tragedy struck – her husband and college sweetheart, Jason Rae, was found dead in a Leeds, England apartment in 2008. I respectfully honored a request to not ask any questions outside of the realm of music, but I will say, for those curious fans out there, that Rae sounded as if she’d bravely moved forward and is doing well these days. The release of her sophomore effort, The Sea, further proves that she’s ready for new chapters in her career and in her life. It was during Oscar weekend that I spoke to this talented performer, and the combination of a poor connection with her ever-so-soft voice prevented a better interview, though it’s a quick reminder of the nature of this business: you get what you get.

That said, from a hotel room in Los Angeles to my desk phone in Seattle, here’s what transpired when Corinne Bailey stepped into “The Music Lounge.”

Albert Rodriguez: You performed at a pre-Oscar fashion show. Were there any celebs in the audience?

Corinne Bailey Rae: I think I saw a bunch of actors. I don’t know; I didn’t have my glasses on.

Rodriguez: Is this your first headlining tour stop in Seattle?

Rae: I have played in Seattle before, but in a small room of maybe 500 people.

Rodriguez: Didn’t you play here with John Legend on your previous visit?

Rae: Yes, I played with John Legend, but I also played there on my own.

Rodriguez: How important is it for overseas artists to break through in the U.S.?

Rae: It’s important to feel like what you do is getting outside of your own country. I felt that when I did my first album. I didn’t really know what to expect at all. It was only when I was told, “Your album’s going to come out in 16 countries” that I said, “Really?” I had no idea. I didn’t really know how any of it worked. I hadn’t really been involved in the music scene before, so I thought you just put out a single in England and promoted it there. But then you go to Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and Holland and then to Canada, America, and Japan. I had no idea that’s how it worked. So, it’s important to feel like other people get it [the music] besides your countrymen. It’s really nice to know that other people around the world are interested. I hadn’t really traveled until the first album. I had been to Seattle before because I’ve got some friends from there.

Rodriguez: Do you remember being here or anything about the city?

Rae: Yeah! I went up the Space Needle, I went to Orcas Island, I went up in the mountains and saw deer, and I went to Lake Wenatchee. That was the first time I’d ever been to America.

Rodriguez: At your show, will you be performing songs from your first album as well as your second?

Rae: I will be. I still really like my first album and I want to include those songs, and then also play the new record. For people

try for igniting the fusion style of jazz in the late ‘60s. Also of note: Burton is Gay. For over two decades of his career, the maestro has been completely open with his sexuality on- and off-stage, jamming with the genre’s biggest names and never once having to deal with a problem. A retired music professor, Burton continues to record albums and hit the road, evidenced by his upcoming two-night stand at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley with fellow jazz giant Chick Corea on April 13 and 14 (visit www.jazzalley.com for ticket information). I caught up with Gary Burton this week from his Florida residence, and here’s what this highly praised musician revealed to me inside “The Music Lounge.”

Rodriguez: You’re coming to Seattle – one of the Gayest cities in America.

Burton: That’s what I hear. I haven’t spent much time in Seattle. In fact, the last time I was there was about 10 years ago, with Chick. We were playing at Jazz Alley also.

Rodriguez: Are you active in your local

Gay community in Ft. Lauderdale or Miami?

Burton: A little bit. I have a lot of Gay friends and we’re out a lot. My partner and I are members of the Stonewall Library Association, but I must admit that I don’t play a real active role, in the political sense, in the community.

Rodriguez: Has the jazz community of musicians always been open to all types?

Burton: There are very few openly Gay jazz musicians. But on the other hand, I’ve never had any negative feedback or reactions from people, either from musicians or fans. I’ve been openly Gay for the past 20 – almost 25 – years in my career, and I expected to catch some situations where people spoke rudely, or that sort of thing. I even worried some musicians might be uncomfortable about collaborating with me on records or tours. But none of that happened.

All the people I used to play with I still play with, and the audiences that come don’t seem to care at all. I will make one point, which is that some Gay performers use their Gay identity as part of their onstage Gay persona, such as Elton John or kd lang. …

On the other hand, other performers, such as me, you wouldn’t have reason to guess I was Gay when I’m on stage performing because there’s nothing in the way I dress or music that I play to indicate that. So, there is some difference, depending on the individual performer.

Rodriguez: Is that the case in the jazzpop world, which is pretty much a different genre all its own?

Burton: Interestingly, the rock world has been more open about having Gay celebrities in their midst than jazz. Of course, the classical world has also been very open about this. Probably the least Gay-friendly genres in music are country and Latin, just because culturally there’s more lack of understanding.

Ten minutes with Corinne Bailey Rae

who know me from the first album, I want to play songs they know and are familiar with.

Rodriguez: Are there any places in the United States you’ve played that you didn’t particularly like?

Rae: No, I’ve found that I like all the places. I wasn’t sure what I’d think of Texas, but when I went there I had no idea how cool Austin is and the people were very friendly.

Rodriguez: Tell me about this upcoming show. Will you be playing with a full band, or is it acoustic?

Rae: It’s gonna be a full band.

The band are the people who played on the album, and the keyboard player is the guy I co-produced the record with.

Rodriguez: The U.K. is known for having lots of hot pop and rock stars. Do you have a favorite?

Rae: I think young Mick Jagger is so amazing. When he was 22, he had this gracious figure, cool hair, big eyes and big mouth. I just think he’s a real interesting person.

Rodriguez: In 2010, what else besides the tour is going to happen?

Rae: We’re doing this tour of the United States, and then we’re going to play in Japan, New Zealand, and Australia for the first time – I’ve never been there before. I think we’ll play in South Korea, as well, in a jazz festival. I’ll be putting out more singles, and I’ll be making more videos, which I really enjoy.

Rodriguez: Although – and he’s from your neck of the woods – Ricky Martin recently came out.

Burton: I know. In fact, I was saying to somebody the other day that that was particularly brave on his part because he is identified as Puerto Rican and having a Latin music following, although he’s kind of a pop name as well. But I appreciated the fact that he had become a father of two little boys that he felt he had to be more honest about the way he lived his life. And that was the same explanation Clay Aiken gave when he went public after he became a father. Whatever the case, it’s good they were able to get comfortable with it.

Rodriguez: Being open about your sexuality onstage is one thing, but did you ever come across any conflicts from sharing a dressing room with any fellow musicians?

Burton: No, I haven’t. And I’m always sensitive and alert to whether someone else shows discomfort in an intimate situation, so if that was the case I could step back or go somewhere else. But you know, that’s never happened. In many cases, we are traveling together, eating together, and changing together, and it hasn’t seemed to have been an issue for anyone.

Rodriguez: At the show here in Seattle, will you and Chick be doing music from several decades back, or sticking to material that’s more recent?

Burton: The purpose of this tour, actually, is to prepare new material for our next record, and we’ve been working on it for some weeks now. We’re still playing some of the old repertoire to balance out the selection of songs, but we play two sets a night and we have 10 new songs, so we’ll be doing about half of them in each show. A lot of times you’ll rehearse these songs and it sounds fine, and then you play them in front of an audience and become aware of little things that need to be altered.

Matthew Barney’s Cremaster Cycle plays SIFF Cinema

The film follows Sy’s unusual development as a dancer and offers a remarkable behind-the-scenes look into the world of American ballet. At its heart, Dancing Across Borders is an extraordinary story of growth, adaptation, and belonging, as well as of the development of talent and the mastery of an art form. It’s also an excellent documentary by first-time director Bass.

Dancing Across Borders opens Friday, April 9, for an exclusive engagement at Landmark’s Varsity Theatre. Opening night will include special appearances by dancer Sokvannara Sar and filmmaker Anne Bass.

I got to chat with Bass on the phone from her home in Fort Worth, Texas. Her softspoken demeanor is anchored by a palpable but elegant tenacious streak. Neither Bass nor Sy seem the type to give up easily.

Scott Rice: I know you went to Vassar College and worked as a contributing editor for Vogue. You’ve also been heavily involved with the Fort Worth Ballet, New York City Ballet, the School of American Ballet, and the American Friends of the Paris Opera Ballet. Tell me how you came to love ballet.

Anne Bass: I began studying ballet as a child and still take a class every day. I particularly like the choreography of George Balanchine and understand how important the School of American Ballet was to him.

Recently I have become interested in the work of young choreographers and particularly admire Benjamin Millepied and Christopher Wheeldon.

Rice: What’s the greatest misconception that the average American has about ballet?

Bass: It seems that some Americans think that ballet is an elite and inaccessible art form. Yesterday, a fellow documentary filmmaker wrote to me after he had seen the film, “I loved every minute, and I discovered a new world – and worlds within

The Cremaster Cycle April 9-15 SIFF Cinema The cremaster is a thin layer of skeletal muscle found in the scrotum. The cremaster surrounds the testicles, raising and lowering them according to temperature, external stimulation, or fear.

To put that into more familiar terms for those readers who have a scrotum and testicles: You know when you jump into cold water and you feel your nut-sack and balls yanked violently inside you, where they then hide behind your bladder? That’s the cremaster doing its thing.

The Cremaster Cycle is Matthew Barney’s sumptuous five-part film project accompanied by related sculptures, photographs, and drawings. Barney completed the cycle in 2002.

Cremaster Cycle is not – and never will be – available on DVD. There are only about 20 copies in existence, at the direction of the artist. The only place it can be seen is on the big screen in theaters and only during official screening cycles.

The last time Cremaster Cycle toured nationally was in 2003. For Barney’s fans, this is a huge opportunity to see this extraordinary work of art.

Back in 2001, a teacher gave me a brochure from one of Barney’s shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

My teacher said I should check it out, that it looked like something I’d be interested in. I’m glad my teacher turned me on to Barney, but I’m not sure what that says about my personal aesthetic.

Barney is a magician, a satirist, showman, a philosopher, a performance artist, a writer, and an alumnus of Yale University. He’s a multimedia artist working in feature-length film, video installations, sculpture, photography, and drawing. Barney creates images that spring from the most ancient regions of the brain, the very core of the collective human experience. The images speak to the fear, violence, and pleasure of human existence in vaguely familiar and desperately discomforting ways.

The cycle begins on the impossibly blue Astroturf of Brono Stadium in Boise, Idaho and ends in the Hungarian State Opera House in Budapest.

The journey is temporal and geographic, mythic and (sur)realist, and relentlessly opulent. The sensibility owes a great debt to Luis Buñuel but the visual style is all Matthew Barney. His imagery is original, totally unique, and consistently arresting.

Cremaster Cycle will screen at SIFF Cinema in Seattle April 9–15, 2010. A special Cremaster Marathon showcasing all five Cremaster installments will screen on April 11. worlds. … I know nothing about dance, and I now want to know much, much more, and to see much more. Brava!” If my film helps open the world of ballet to people and makes it more accessible to them, that will give me great satisfaction.

Rice: Obviously, your instincts about Sy were right on, but what did you see that day in Cambodia? How did you know Sy had something so special and how did you know that his talents would translate to ballet?

Bass: Sy is a natural performer. He has great charisma onstage and is very unaffected as a dancer. I thought his proportions, his musicality, and the joy he projects to an audience made him perfectly suited for ballet. It is important to know that the reason I invited him to come to the U.S. to see if he would like to study ballet is because there was not much of a future for male dancers in Cambodia. In their Khmer classical ballet, both the male and female roles are danced by women. It is Shakespeare in reverse.

Rice: Do you think Sy understood the sacrifices he would be required to make?

Bass: He was very young and, in many ways, innocent. I think he was surprised by what a challenge it was.

Rice: Did you understand the sacrifices he would have to make?

Bass: I did not realize how very different his culture was. Even though he learned English quite quickly, it was some years before he fit in. I had imagined that because there were many international students at the School of American Ballet he would share their experience in adapting well. Most of the students arrive at SAB with a ballet background, certainly everyone that was his age, so fitting in that world presented an additional challenge for him. I did not know that he was 16 and it is almost impossible to begin studying ballet at that age and become a professional dancer. As Peter Boal says in the film, “it was one chance in a thousand,” and after seeing the film at the Seattle International Film Festival, he said, “I should have said one chance in a million.”

Rice: One of the most powerful moments of the film for me was a bit fleeting. That’s when Sy talks about not totally belonging in

the Western world of ballet and yet not feeling at home when he returns to Cambodia.

Do you ever have second thoughts about bringing him here and sponsoring him?

Bass: I wanted to show in the film the ambivalence that Sy has felt from time to time, and of course I worried about him being separated from his family and trying to adapt to so many new challenges. I also constantly asked him if he was sure he was committed to ballet because if he wasn’t I was now committed to helping him achieve whatever goal he set for himself [Sy was also an honors student at Professional Children’s School]. He always answered that he did want to continue to study ballet and I had no choice but to believe him. But I did have doubts.

Rice: When did you decide to make the documentary?

Bass: When I started filming Sy … in his early classes, it was with the intention of making a record of his progress to send home to his parents. After Sy completed his studies at SAB, he competed in the Varna Ballet Competition where he was a semifinalist. Many friends asked to see the official footage so I asked a student filmmaker to put it together. When I saw how easy it was for him on Final Cut Pro, I said, “well, I have classroom footage and the TV footage from when he danced in Cambodia for the first time,” and we put together a short film. To my surprise, my friends liked it, and they encouraged me to make a proper film.

Many of them are artists and they felt it was a unique opportunity to take one inside the ballet world. I did a reality check with some dance friends and they also found the story fascinating.

Rice: The New York Times headlined its article about Dancing Across Borders with “Patron Turns Home Movies Into a Feature.” Is that accurate?

Bass: There is actually very little of the “home movies” in the film, but the spirit is correct.

Rice: I think lots of people out there would like to make a movie. However, most people without experience fail. You’re a first-time filmmaker – a novice, to say the least. Now

that the film is finished, what was your greatest misconception about making a documentary?

Bass: I was surprised by how challenging but also consuming and satisfying the process of editing was. My biggest surprise though was how lengthy the post-production process is. I personally underestimated how important sound mixing was, and I was not happy with the first effort. I did two more mixes – one in 5.1 [surround] and one in stereo. Then there was the process of converting from digital to 35mm film. For example, blues and whites are completely different in digital and in film, and so we did another color correction. One of the people at Technicolor said to me when I announced that I thought we were finished at last, “Films are never finished; they are abandoned.”

Rice: As a magazine editor, you obviously understand the basic elements of storytelling. However, you’ve made a beautiful film with a nicely controlled narrative, but a narrative that could have spun wildly out of control. What piece of this story got left out of the film?

Bass: There were many stories that could have been told. When one of our editors and I were discussing how much material we had, he said, “We don’t have a film; we have a mini-series.”

Rice: I know Sy recently went through a stage where he questioned his will to continue dancing. Where is Sy now, professionally and emotionally?

Bass: In the late fall, Sy thought he wanted to quit dancing, and he resigned from Pacific Northwest Ballet. A long five weeks later he called and said that he thought he had been dancing for everyone but himself, his family, his country, his teachers, and of course me; and he said that he wanted to “do what he wanted to do.” However, having quit dancing, he realized how much he missed it and that he had been doing what he wanted to do all along. It was a painful period for him, but I think he has learned a lot from the experience and has a strong renewed commitment to dancing. You might ask him; I don’t want to speak for him.

Azzopardi: I’m not used to seeing you as glammed-up as you’ve been in some recent photos. What’s up with all the make-up?

Etheridge: You know, it’s something I think I’ve grown into. At 48, I need all the help I can get. [Laughs.]

Azzopardi: After all you’ve been through this past decade, what place are you in now?

Etheridge: That was an intense decade!

But everything that happened makes me stronger, makes me understand that this is what life is. You are presented with these issues, but you learn and you grow and you move on. Life is rich and full, and nothing’s going to kill you. You just keep moving forward – and it gets sweeter.

Azzopardi: So this is an extension of The Awakening?

Etheridge: This is the next step. I had to do The Awakening to present and be upfront about the things that were happening inside of me, the spiritual side of me. The awakening part of me is understanding and going through cancer and saying, “Whoa! Life is a lot different. Life is not what it seems.”

That album was important to put out so people – myself and my fans – would know what path I was on, and then after it seemed so clear that it was time to gather up all that strength. I was knocked down and it was time to pull the parts of me together that I knew were there in this confidence and in this clarity that I have now and shoot it through that rock ‘n’ roll gift that I’ve been given.

Azzopardi: “Life is not what it seems” – that’s a line from the closing track, “Gently We Row.” How has that been true in your own life?

Etheridge: I wanted to reference the children’s song “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” because that song has all the truth in it that we need. I love that we’re taught it as a child. “… Life is but a dream” – that’s all it is. We create it every day. That’s what came to me. That’s where I got to going through cancer and coming out.

Life doesn’t happen to us. We are creating this, and we have more power than it seems.

This can happen to you, but your perception of what it is creates what it is. You have a choice in how your life affects you. That’s mostly what I want to convey through my music.

Azzopardi: Did it take you a long time to realize that?

Etheridge: I got the crash course in it with chemotherapy because I laid there day after day, week after week, and had nothing.

No television. No books. I couldn’t even read; it hurt to read.

It was just day after day with myself, until my mind – our minds are so busy setting things up in the future and worrying about the past – ran out of things to think about.

And it just stopped. When that happens there’s this beautiful spirit that’s behind that that really is in charge of what’s happening, Azzopardi: Also on “Gently We Row,” I noticed the parallels between your mother raising you and you raising your daughter. I thought that was so powerful.

Etheridge: That’s another part of getting older. You realize your parents did shape a lot of what you think and do and feel, yet it’s time to stop blaming them. You can stay there and you can wallow around in that or you can say, “OK, this happened to me and now I make different choices.” And that’s what the song’s about. I’m making different choices for myself and for my children.

When you do that, you also heal yourself.

Azzopardi: Parenthood actually pops up several times on this album. How has it changed you?

Etheridge: Oh, it’s unbelievable. I just had no idea of what being a mother would do. And it’s all-encompassing, it’s every breath I take, it’s every moment I live. I am a mother to four children, and I don’t go to sleep at night until I know where all four are and how they are. It makes me a better person, it makes me more loving, compassionate, patient – patience is ... definitely required, or you’ll just get eaten up alive.

[Laughs.] They teach me every day about myself. They are these beautiful little mirrors, and I want to be the best person I can

be for them.

Azzopardi: Speaking of the kids, there was an episode of Kathy Griffin’s My Life on the D-List that aired last year where she was in your house, seeking tips on becoming an activist. What was that like?

Etheridge: Kathy Griffin’s awesome.

She’s on a journey of her own, coming from the place of being on the D-list, and then she turned herself A-list. You see it’s not a place you get to; it’s about how you feel inside about yourself. Her activism, her caring and her journey are very inspiring. And she’s super talented, too.

Azzopardi: Did you eat those cookies you were baking while she was there?

Etheridge: Yes, we did! And we made some more a little later.

Azzopardi: Do the kids like to bake a lot?

Etheridge: Anything involving sugar, there they are with a spoon.

Azzopardi: What was it like reteaming with producer John Shanks, who worked on 1999’s Breakdown?

Etheridge: He was my guitar player in my first band. We hung out in the ’80s, and we’ve played every hellhole bar. And we’ve also played Madison Square Garden. We’ve been through so much, and he knows what I’m capable of. He knows just how to get the best out of it and how to push me to give my best. He’s like my brother that makes me crazy. [Laughs.] It was really wonderful working with him.

Azzopardi: How did the collaboration with Natasha Bedingfield and Joss Stone on “We Are the Ones” come about?

Etheridge: That’s my favorite track on the album just because it’s different and crazy and I love it. John called me up and said, “Hey, guess who was across the hall recording – Joss Stone!” She just sang on it. Then, like a week later, he said, “Hey, Natasha Bedingfield’s coming in and I’m going to play her this song. I think she’s going to sing on it.” So he worked with her.

That’s what he can do, because he’s John Shanks.

Azzopardi: Have you met Natasha?

Etheridge: No, I haven’t! We’ve become very intimate on tape, though.

Azzopardi: When did you know you had “Fearless Love”?

Etheridge: The way that I’m looking at it is that it’s about my own fearless love. I need to love fearlessly, and that starts with myself. That’s been the journey in the last five years.

Azzopardi: You’re touring this summer, but without your hot, longtime electric guitarist Philip Sayce – why?

Etheridge: Because Philip’s got his own little career going on, so I just cleared the board. I went, “This is a new page for me.

It’s a new album, it’s a new sound, and it’s a new feel. I’m just breaking out.” It’s hard because I get very attached to my band, but they weren’t available to make the album, so that was the first step of going, “Ya know, I think this is leading me down another path and I need to be open.” I sent him off with love and I’m sure we’ll get together in the future, but right now I’m putting these guys together and they’re dedicated to working with me now.

Azzopardi: The music video for “Nervous” – the second single – stars Edie Falco, which reminds me of all the other hot actresses who’ve appeared in your videos – Jennifer Aniston, Juliette Lewis and Gwyneth Paltrow. Of them all, who made you the most nervous?

Etheridge: Edie Falco, probably. Did you see the way she looked at me? [Laughs.]

Azzopardi: How did her cameo come about?

Etheridge: I actually know the creator of Nurse Jackie. She’s one of my BFFs, and her and I have been trying to do a television show together for a long time and when she landed Nurse Jackie, I was so happy for her.

I played the album for her months ago, and she goes, “Can I use ‘Nervous’ in the final episode of Season 2?” It was just a really sweet and fun thing to do.

Azzopardi: Have you seen Crystal Bowersox on American Idol this season?

Etheridge: I have! And my kids love her.

The first time they saw her, they paused it – because I only let them watch it on the weekend on TiVo – and came running into the kitchen. They said, “Mom, come here!”

They had paused it on the shot of her guitar and they said, “Is that your signature?” And holy cow, that was my signature.

Azzopardi: Besides a couple of tracks, there are far less politics on Fearless Love than on The Awakening.

Etheridge: [Laughs.] They’re just hidden underneath.

Azzopardi: “Miss California,” a song about the state’s ban on Gay marriage, is blatantly political. How do you think music and political activism – or activism of any sort – work together?

Etheridge: Music reaches past people’s minds and it goes straight into their spirit, their soul, their body. You can take advantage of that in a way. Music and activism is natural. It’s always been a way through time to bring us closer to the unity we all need to be in.

Azzopardi: Is “Indiana” about your wife Tammy Lynn Michaels?

Etheridge: It’s completely about Tammy.

She’s from Indiana, and her journey has been so inspiring to me – and I’m around it so much – that this song popped out. To be able to sing with compassion about another person is new for me. For me not to be in the song, I’m working on that.

Azzopardi: Why didn’t you before? Was it easier for you not to?

Etheridge: Yeah, I guess so, because everything was so autobiographic. I still do that, but I want to expand as a writer.

Azzopardi: Is “Miss California” taking a dig at Carrie Prejean?

Etheridge: It’s not necessarily her. I certainly don’t know her and I don’t really have a comment to the sadness that – I’m not even going to comment. It fit perfectly because when I started to write it, I said I really just have to address this. I have to address my home state, my people and the feeling of, like, being spurned by a lover.

I thought, OK, I’m going to write a song about that and I’ll call it “Miss California,” just like Carrie Prejean – even though I’m definitely not singing to her. It just worked into the whole thing.

Azzopardi: This album seems to reach back to your roots. You’re rocking out more like you did in the ’90s and you have a weary woman in an isolated room in the “Fearless Love” video much like the one for “Come to My Window.” Was that intentional?

Etheridge: Yeah, that’s still a part of me.

I’m maturing and I create it differently, but that girl is still me, and so when I get on stage and sing “I’m the Only One,” “Come to My Window” and “Bring Me Some Water” – from over 20 years ago – that’s still me.

I might not be going through those experiences in that moment, but they happened to me. So I’m able to reflect on it, remember it, understand it in my life now, still see where that’s happening in my life and rock from that place and feel comfortable now.

ing, the audience notices immediately that there is more to her character than “oohs” and “ahhs.”

Adrienne Warren plays Lorrell Robinson, whose character perhaps undergoes the most growth of the three. This character could easily get lost in the mix as a “middle character,” but Ms. Warren doesn’t allow it.

Showing the audience her character’s naiveté practically from her entrance, Lorrell goes on maturing and eventually becomes a strong individual.

Moya Angela adds her own signature

to the tragic and triumphant Effie Melody White. Her voice is strong and from her first vocal in “Move (You’re Steppin’ on My Heart),” the audience gets the feeling that she can deliver. While her stage blocking can appear a little stiff at times, it’s easily forgiven for the powerful instrument she carries. At the finale of Act One, the musical tension builds until, like the calm before a tempest, she begins the hurt whispers of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Instead of invoking gospel fervor as past performers have, Ms. Angela tackles a more challenging interpretation and delivers pure emotion and hurt. Her pain is evident. We can’t help but see it, and we feel it right along with her.

The main principle characters all do fine jobs. Trevon Davis does well as Effie’s brother, C.C. White. His character comes across as incidental, but he still puts his own stamp on the role. Original agent Marty, played by Milton Craig Nealy, also shows us the struggles of keeping his clients while someone else greases his way onto the playing field. The only main character that seemed unsure was Agent/Hustler Curtis Taylor, Jr., played by Chas Lamar Shepherd. We are shown repetitively his character’s smarmy ways and oily behavior. The underhanded actions are brought across clearly, but the audience doesn’t see any of his charm. We don’t see why two of the three girls fall for him, professionally or romantically. He didn’t express to the audience any clearly likeable qualities, and the character really calls for the portrayal to be a little slicker.

Another major character that needs to be mentioned is the staging. The sets are an active part of the production. Composed of thousands of lights, they twinkle and flash, adding as much to the mood of the show as the music or the actors. Rotating panels open and close, allowing the audience to see both on-stage and behind-the-scenes action simultaneously. The scenic designer (Robin Wagner) and the lighting designer (Ken Billington) definitely need to be mentioned for their beautiful and breathtaking work.

Dreamgirls is a show worth seeing on the stage. While the movie did a wonderful recreation – one of the better stage-to-screen transferences – there is still something special about seeing a performance live. Sitting in a movie theater and eating popcorn doesn’t compare to having goosebumps conquer your flesh as you witness the trio’s rise and emotional crashes. You will not be disappointed, despite any familiarity with the storyline. And I am telling you, go get your ticket.

Dreamgirls opened on Broadway in November, 1981. Taking the season by storm, the show was nominated for over 12 Tony Awards and won seven. Originally created with Nell Carter in mind, her conflict with television schedules allowed Jennifer Holiday to enter and win the Tony Award for Best Actress in a musical. The original cast recording stars include Loretta Devine (Lorrell), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Deena) and Jennifer Holiday (Effie). A full-length concert version (with Heather Hadley, Audra McDonald and Lillias White) was released on two CDs in 2001.

Controversy began when Diana Ross claimed the story was stolen from her life, with herself as the model for Deena, and troubled original Supreme member Florence Ballard as the inspiration for Effie.

Barry Gordy, founder of the Motown record label, also has threatened lawsuits against the musical’s creators. The show’s authors claim it was based on several girl trio groups similar to The Supremes, The Rondettes, and The Chiffons, among others.
