If the April 11 preliminary is the standard to judge this season by, then we are in for a treat!

Sunday’s competition was fierce, the song choices ranged from perfect to “what?” and the contestants were cute as can be.

First up to wow the judges was super-cute Ryan Crawford (whose doppelganger is a young Richard Gere!). It’s not easy to go first, but Ryan brought it and set the tone for the evening: this is not your normal run-of-the-mill karaoke competition. Ryan, who was perfectly comfortable onstage, sang a happy, upbeat version

Badass Kick-Ass the funniest movie of the year

Kick-Ass Opening April 16 Miley Cyrus can kiss my ass. Same goes for Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez.

There’s a new tweener girl hero in town, and her name is Hit Girl. She’s the real star of the new movie Kick-Ass, and she doesn’t fuck around.

Unfortunately, the screaming tweeners won’t be able to get a ticket to see Hit Girl in this five-coupon spectacular because Kick-Ass is rated R – and for good reason, too. This is a comic book flick for adults only, and it’s the funniest movie I’ve seen in months.

Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) is a typical awkward teenager, sifting through high school life anonymously until he decides to become a superhero named Kick-Ass (don’t forget the hyphen) by slipping into a customized wetsuit and roaming the city streets looking for criminals. The only problem, young Dave doesn’t have any superhero superpowers, so he gets his ass kicked.

Enter Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz). The only things sharper than her wit are her Chinese throwing stars, and she isn’t afraid to use either. She talks like a truck driver and fights like a caged wildcat.

She does it all wearing a purple wig, plaid skirt, and sporting pink accessories.

Daddy, the real heroes of the town, step in to teach Dave a few tricks of the trade.

There are also a few new twists to the superhero milieu. Dave lets his high school crush Katie Deauxma (Lyndsy Fonseca) believe he’s Gay so he can woo her. The playing-Gay-to-woo scenario is not a new twist in general, but it’s new to this genre and handled nicely by the writers.

Is Facebook passé yet? Is YouTube old news? Guess not. Both features prominently in the storyline as Kick-Ass uses his Facebook page to find people who need his help and he gains fame through a viral video shot on a cell phone.

There are villains and sidekicks and everything else one expects from a deliciously sophomoric movie based on a satirical graphic novel that targets mainstream comic books. There is also plenty of good, oldfashioned movie fun, tasteless humor, and sickening violence – just the way you like it.

2010 Langston Hughes African American Film Festival April 17-25 Various film venues The 2010 Langston Hughes African American Film Festival kicks off April 17

with an Opening Night Gala fundraiser screening of Nurse.Fighter.Boy benefitting the Metropolitan Sickle Cell Task Force.

The Festival hopes to promote awareness of the Sickle Cell Centennial. Sickle cell anemia, which affects about 1 in 12 African Americans, is an inherited, lifelong disease in which the body makes sickle-shaped red blood cells.

Nurse.Fighter.Boy is a film about a mother struggling with sickle cell anemia and its devastating effects on her family and her own life. The screening is at the Cinerama (2100 4th Ave.). Doors open at 6 p.m., the screening starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 and available through Brown Paper Tickets or in person seven days a week from 6-11 p.m. at the Central Cinema box office (1411 21st Ave.). The evening will be capped by a special post-screening discussion with director Charles Officer in attendance.

young John Lennon that starred Master Johnson. The couple is expecting their first child as I write. If that seems catty, it’s only my jealousy bubbling up to the surface.

Johnson is gorgeous even when playing nerdy, which is pretty much the entire movie. He goes from frumpy awkward teenager to lithe awkward superhero wannabe as he dons the wetsuit. Kick-Ass, the superhero character, never quite gets the superhero thing right, and that’s part of his charm.

Big Daddy is played by the tampeddown version of Nicolas Cage (thankfully). You never know which Cage you’ll get, and much depends on the director.

When properly reigned in, Cage is awesome good fun to watch (Adaptation).

When he isn’t, things spin out of control (The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans). He’s under control here, but just barely.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who charmed as the misguided teen paramour McLovin in his screen debut Superbad, does journeymen work in a role destined to be fleshed out in the sequel. He doesn’t have much to do but count his money until Kick-Ass II gets green-lighted.

That brings me to the real star of KickAss, and the reason to see the movie: Moretz steals the film from the moment she takes the screen. Whether she’s a pigtailed little girl named Mindy who teases her dad by asking for a puppy instead of a bazooka for her birthday or is bouncing around the screen as Hit Girl offing bad guys three times her size in fantastically creative ways, you can’t take your eyes off her. Moretz is a gifted young actor, physically and emotionally, and she is lovely.

Let’s hope she’s the next Natalie Portman and not the next Lindsay Lohan.

The fight scenes are great fun with expert and creative choreography, the story is simple and familiar with enough of a twist that it feels fresh, and the actors are great. Kick-Ass is the most fun I’ve had watching a movie all year. plores African American families through the eyes of Lesbian and Gay siblings. The film was awarded Best Documentary at the 1996 Atlanta International Film Festival and plays at Central Cinema April 18 at 3 p.m.

Mississippi Damned will be screened at 7 p.m. on April 18, also at Central Cinema.

Morgan Stiff, the film’s producer/editor and life partner of director Tina Mabry will be in attendance to support the film. Stiff also set me up with a preview screening of the movie the week before the festival opens.

Mississippi Damned is based on the actual events of Tina Mabry’s childhood growing up in Mississippi. The narrative is rife with violence, abuse, and addiction, and will inevitably be compared to last year’s Oscar darling Precious. Though the themes are similar, a couple of things set the films apart: Mississippi Damned is about a family that cares about one another even as they smother under pervasive poverty and struggle to create healthy relationships with little education and few resources.

Mississippi Damned also feels much more authentic than Precious. The film is beautiful in its simplicity and honesty. It takes an unflinching look at the individual and collective struggles of three sisters and their offspring. There are no twists, no painterly composition, no villains, and no clear heroes. There are people trying desperately to create homes that are safe and positive places to be. Mabry’s direction is sure and steady, and the ensemble cast is terrific. The large number of characters is handled with surprising dexterity by first-time feature film director Mabry. I highly recommend Mississippi Damned.

Other filmmakers expected to attend the festival include Alrick Brown, Ava DuVernay, Thomas Allen Harris, Arjun Kaul, Sharon Lane, and Jessica Chen Drammeh, among others.

Robopop! pushes boundaries and broadens concepts

Washington Ensemble Theatre Through May 10 Robopop! at WET (Washington Ensemble Theatre) is a crosscultural blend of story and dance. WET’s latest ensemble-created piece tells a story of “one woman’s heroic quest to save the human race in an epic battle of Man vs. Robot, where love is her downfall and ultimate savior.”

With homages to Japanese anime, the band The Flaming Lips, and numerous “robot versus hu-

man” movies, the ensemble presents what could be considered a long-form music video (it’s an hour long). The program includes a list of songs with titles that explain the story, like “The Chosen One,” “Battle 1,” “Love Ballet,” etc.

A very cool set by Andrea Bryn Bush has a series of lights arranged in a tiered diagonal fashion that makes the stage look very deep – quite a feat in a small area like the WET stage.

Light colors and clouds on the walls give a look

of floating in space. Amazing costumes by Heidi Ganser include great robot heads and regimental soldier-like robot costumes in black, and “human” jumpsuits in orange.

Lighting is extremely important for this production, and Amiya Brown has accomplishes a complex range of moods and styles.

The choreography is all very evocative.

It’s uncredited to a single person, but supported by a “consultant,” Ellie Sandstrom.

The choreographers (the Ensemble?) deserve notice for their ability to keep it fresh and only duplicate moves when they choose to evoke earlier moments.

The music is a mix of popular songs and mood music to underscore the action.

Video is also used to augment the action. A unique piece of business has a robot “reprogrammed” to forget its love for the humans, and a video shows the deletion of everything the robot “knows.”

The nimble cast is listed with no particular roles applied, but Libby Matthews has the main role of the Human in this story, and

Hannah Victoria Franklin stands out due to her amazing costume, which is covered in stuffed dogs, and her role as the sort of super robot Mama. The other actors are John Abramson, Noah Benezra, Ali El-Gasseir, Mary Bliss Mather, Jillia Pessenda, Erin Pike, and Mickey Rowe, as well as Kazuma Yamada, who is seen on a special video in the lobby before the start of the show.

WET’s mission is to push boundaries and explore collaborations in their art.

This piece definitely does that, blurring the connection between theater and dance, storytelling and music videos. Certainly, language is no barrier for this show, so any foreign tourist or resident who struggles with English will have no problems understanding the production.

It’s all crisply done and well-planned.

This has all the hallmarks of a WET production, with clean lines and impeccable details. Kudos to the company for another production that continues to challenge and broaden the concept of “what is theater?”

Farcical Taking Steps is sheer silliness

Taking Steps Phoenix Theatre Through May 2 Alan Ayckbourn is a master of farce. A fun example of a great farce is Taking Steps at Phoenix Theatre. Director MaryBeth Dagg gets her team hopping around the stage adroitly, barely missing each other, even though they are on different floors of a threestory house. That’s one of Ayckbourn’s classic stylings: he likes the house to be played flattened out, but to maintain the fiction that there are multiple levels. So there’s a pretend “regular” staircase between the ground floor and the upstairs bedrooms, and a pretend “circular” staircase that leads to the attic. The actors must climb up and down the stairs each time while not actually changing heights. It never fails to amuse, no matter how many stairs they mime climbing.

The basics: Elizabeth (Meredith Armstrong) has been married for three months and she’s already sick of being adored and wants out to go back to her life as a (bad) TV dancer. She recruits her brother Mark (Rick Wright) to take her to the train station, but he’s upset because he needs to pick up his erstwhile fiancée Kitty (Melanie Calderwood) and doesn’t think Elizabeth should be ending her marriage so quickly.

Husband Roland (Frank Lawler) is getting ready to buy a creepy old house from Leslie Bainbridge (James Lyle) and has his solicitor’s office bring him the paperwork.

from the solicitor’s brings the paperwork to the house. However, the house is so ostensibly large that people can be in it and not know anyone else is there.

This is where the farce builds. One goes up to the attic to sleep, others are drinking themselves to a stupor in the living room, then stumbling up the stairs to the attic to sleep, so someone gets stuck in the attic closet not knowing who was coming up the stairs, and the owner lets himself in with his own key wearing motorcycle leathers and a helmet and is mistaken for an intruder. Watson is told there’s a ghost in the house that gets into bed with people and kills them, and then when he is in bed, a strange woman gets in bed with him, so he thinks he’s going to die. Then there are notes written as “goodbye” messages that are mistaken for suicide notes. It’s all sheer silliness.

A singularly offbeat and funny performance by Jay Jenkins tops the strong performances (after a bit of a slow start). The comic business is welltimed. Each character has his/her own moments of high hilarity, including poor Kitty (Calderwood), who spends most of her time on stage stuck in a closet.

The script is especially good at making a joke come back around for a second

bite. A well-designed set by Dick Floyd and lights and sound by Rick Wright keep all the gags moving.

by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer The Vagina Monologues Stone Soup Theatre Through April 25 Performances of Eve Ensler’s awardwinning play The Vagina Monologues are a lot like vaginas; they’ve been around a long time, each one is totally different, and you should plan ahead if you want to get in.

The Stone Soup Theatre’s 2010 production of The Vagina Monologues is part of the V-Day Campaign, a global movement, founded by Ensler, to stop violence against women and girls. The production runs April 2-25 and includes five new “Spotlight Monologues” created specifically for the VDay Campaign.

The “V” in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina. That’s vabulous!

If you have loved The Vagina Monologues before, you won’t be disappointed. Familiar monologues like “My Angry Vagina,” an indignant rant about thong underwear and cold ducklips; “Flood,” wherein arousal and shame mark an insensitive boy’s car upholstery; and “Reclaiming Cunt,” which, well, reclaims the word “cunt,” are present and accounted for.

There are also five newly written monologues designed to focus on situations around the world where women are at risk, situations where women have been raped, murdered, dismissed, subjugated, or denied the right to even exist. The two most powerful of the five concern a Transgendered woman and women living under the burqa.

Vaginas still talking 15 years later Aiden Karamanyan gives a powerful reading of “They Beat the Girl Out of My Boy … or So They Tried” based on interviews with Transwomen from all over America.

Karamanyan has a rich voice and delivers the monologue in a halting fashion that conflates the courage and fear in asking the world to acknowledge this kind of vagina.

The inclusion of the Transwoman in The Vagina Monologues is politically important and comes awfully late, but I’m glad it was present, and Karamanyan is terrific.

“Under the Burqa” is performed by Frances Hearn, a veteran of the Seattle and Los Angeles acting scenes. After an awkward disclaimer about cultural choices and a mysterious time when the burqa was/is/ will be a choice (or not), Hearn dives into a monologue about life for women under the Taliban government of Afghanistan. The monologue is a blistering response to the oppression wrought on Afghani women by the religious leaders.

The material is controversial and handled delicately (thus the unwieldy disclaimer at the beginning). There’s a narrow space left between standing up for women oppressed by the rules and regulations of a major religion and respecting the religious freedom of hundreds of millions of Muslims. Regardless of all the cultural politicking of the monologue, Hearn gives a poignant and nuanced take, choreographed around a red curtain that divides the stage. Hearn’s expressive eyes speak entire stories by themselves.

chalk that up to opening-night jitters. Once they settled in and the strange accents got smoothed out, everything fell into place.

Camille Campbell and Hearn give stand-out performances throughout. Melissa Topscher finds her comfort zone doing a stand-up version of “My Angry Vagina” and, as mentioned, Karamanyan has an odd cadence to her speech that works well with her role.

The small stage at Stone Soup Theatre and intimate seating is perfect for a five-person ensemble performance like this production. The blocking is nicely designed and the constant entries and exits keep things interesting without being distracting. The monologues can get static if the actors aren’t moving; I’ve seen it happen.

The Vagina Monologues has been around a while now and I’ve seen it performed a number of times. Many people question if they are still relevant after so long in the public sphere and after so many productions all over the world. Other people seem

to want some equal time for other identities to speak out (an issue at least partially addressed through the inclusion of the trans character).

The Vagina Monologues are certainly still relevant. The new pieces have a broader cultural scope than the original play. They have a definitive international perspective due to new pieces like “Say it” and “Under the Burqa.”

Sure, women have come a long way here in the U.S. of A, but as long as a woman’s body is considered a threat to male virtue anywhere, as long as women’s bodies are routinely mutilated to ensure fidelity anywhere, as long as vaginas are routinely considered nothing more than penis receptacles and birthing tubes anywhere, as long as women anywhere in the world suffer under patriarchal oppression, The Vagina Monologues will be relevant.

his obvious talents as a guitarist, lends great backup vocals. I was very impressed with drummer Jon Shiffman, whose rhythmic pounding was a delight. Lastly, each time I’ve seen the band play, pianist and backup vocalist Justin Huey is on point and really adds so much to the dynamic sound that is Steel Train.

After the show, the band took time to meet with fans, sign autographs, and take photos.

“Touring is really important for us,” Antonoff told SGN. He says the band has toured with Tegan and Sara, Ben Folds, The Fray, Silversun Pickups, and the Format, to name a few.

Antonoff said that touring with Tegan and Sara was a great experience. “It was amazing to see the energy and loyal fanbase that exists within the Gay community.” Although Antonoff says the band does not distinguish any types of fans as being more important than the other, he did say, “I do think it’s great to know that we have a following in the Gay community.”

“We don’t get the chance to come up to Seattle that much, but it is something that we want to change,” he said. The band is set to release their third studio album, Twilight Tales, this June, and is looking to add Seattle to the tour roster.

Jonsi gives majestic performance at Showbox Steel Train

Steel Train April 9 Chop Suey Jack Antonoff, frontman of the indie rock band Steel Train, writes music as a way to relate to other people. “I’m in love with performing,” he told me backstage at Chop Suey shortly before the band took to the stage and delivered one of the best rock performances I’ve ever seen.

Not only are the boys of Steel Train easy on the eyes, but these guys are the real deal; the band is musically talented, with most of the five members playing more than one instrument and backing up Jack on vocals.

Lyrically speaking, it doesn’t get much better than Antonoff. In other words, Steel Train sounds great, looks good, and has the substance that is, quite frankly, missing from most mainstream bands these days.

On April 9, Steel Train performed a solid show at Chop Suey. In all honesty, the venue was perfect for true fans because it provided the intimate setting that loyal listeners crave.

After announcing to the audience, “We’re

Steel Train. We are from New Jersey,” the band performed a majority of the songs from 2007’s Trampoline. The show was jam-packed with recognizable fan favorites.

Songs like “Firecracker,” “Black Eye,” and the epic “Alone on the Sea” were well received by the audience, who could be heard singing along to every song in the set.

Like most songwriters, Antonoff pens from personal experience. As a nod to fellow Jersey boy Bruce Springsteen, the band covered The Boss’ “Dancing in the Dark.”

The band also did an amazing cover of The Band’s “The Weight.”

Standout performances of the night included “Kill Monsters in the Rain” and “Dakota,” a song that references a drag queen.

Steel Train ended the show with a raucous version of “I Feel Strange,” a band and fan favorite alike.

Steel Train gave it all they had at Friday’s show. Watching Antonoff perform is inspiring; it is obvious he feels every note and believes every word he sings. Bassist Evan Winiker seems the perfect sidekick for Antonoff onstage, and the two rockers seem to work off each other effortlessly. Guitarist Daniel Silbert is super-cute, and besides

While waiting for Jonsi to come on stage Saturday night at The Showbox SoDo, a synth line played over the house speakers – a quiet, soothing, drawn-out melody that left me feeling a little neglected, like I was hanging around in limbo.

Jonsi took a fair amount of time to approach the stage, and when he did, he offered no greeting, no “thanks for coming,” he just picked up a guitar and started playing.

The performance that followed was nothing less than expected, although quite a bit strayed from the signature monolithic sound of Sigur Ros. The band eased into the set, beginning with a slow, fingerpicking acoustic number called “Stars in Still Water,” sung in English (also a far cry

Free Concert at Jazz Alley The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley presents a performance by The Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz featuring Antonio Hart (saxophone) and Lisa Henry (vocals) with selected members from the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. Band members from LACHSA are students Zak Astor (piano), Max D’Anda (drums), John Egizi (trombone), Balam Garcia (bass), Adam Moezinia (guitar), and Max Zooi (saxophone).

The concert is part of the “Peer-to-Peer” jazz education program at Seattle Public Schools. Alongside Hart and Henry, jazz’s future “young lions” will perform standards, jazz classics, and contemporary jazz, as well as compositions from Hart and Henry’s latest CD releases. Charlie Musselwhite “Blues is tough,” Charlie Musselwhite explains. He could just as easily be talking about himself. Described by the San Jose Mercury News as “the second coming of

Led Zeppelin, with Tom Waits on vocals,” Charlie and his band embody the direct and timeless power of the blues.

Charlie continues to deliver that highwattage intensity on stage, testifying to the truth of living in real America night in and night out. Whether it’s the rough river town of Memphis of his childhood, the rough South Side Chicago juke joints where he cut his teeth as a performer, or the disillusioned 21st-century New Orleans, Musselwhite’s music still speaks loud and clear to the soul with passion and grace.

When Charlie released his first record, 1967’s defiant Stand Back, the country was in the midst of an unpopular war and entering the slipstream of rapid cultural and political change. Fast-forward four decades and not much has changed. Neither has Musselwhite’s musical wanderlust, nor his creative ambition.

His hunger to explore new sounds and possibilities resulted in an acclaimed 2007 collaboration with alt-rock institution Eddie Vedder on the Golden Globe-nominated soundtrack to the film Into The Wild. Vedder’s haunting vocals and Musselwhite’s aching harp strains added to the movie’s already powerful story. Charlie recalls recording sessions filled with mutual admiration. “It was great. Sean Penn was there, too. They were fans and knew a lot of my records. We hit it off right away and had great rapport.”

Charlie describes this give and take between himself and performers from other generations and different genres as “a conversation.” It is an ongoing one that has been a key reason why his music remains so vital. “Every situation has something to offer and can spark new ideas,” he explains.

“Something new comes out of it.”

Musselwhite sums up: “It’s like, I know what I know. What do you know that can make things even more interesting?”

For Charlie Musselwhite, the thrill and challenge of engaging an audience ultimately fuels his artistry. “It’s about the feeling, and connecting with people,” he explains, “And blues – if it’s real blues – is loaded with feeling.” Charlie continues that, “it ain’t about technique, either; it’s about truth, connecting to the truth and communicating with people.”

The xx stellar in Seattle headlining debut

by Albert Rodriguez SGN A&E Writer The xx April 12 The Showbox SoDo Despite a 10:35 p.m. start – nearly an hour after their announced set time – The xx gave a sold-out crowd at The Showbox SoDo what it had anticipated: a concert filled with many moments of brilliance and not a single disappointment.

The shadows of this hotly pursued London trio appeared behind a massive white curtain, and the opening chords of “Intro” were illuminated by synchronized flashes of duo lead singers Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim. The dramatic instrumental number has

been used in an AT&T commercial featuring local Olympic athlete Apolo Anton Ohno.

Surprisingly bold, The xx lunged into “Crystalised” for the next entry on their set list. Newer artists, even established ones, tend to save their most-recognized material for the latter part of the show, but not these guys – if anything, it proved how ahead of the curve they really are by unloading a big hit in the first five minutes of the performance, which was backed beautifully by magenta lighting.

Croft and Sim, who cleverly overlap their vocals on various tracks, were flawless. I found myself moving my head from singer to singer as if I were watching an intense tennis match. Croft’s husky figure, butch haircut, and robust pipes recalled an early

Bailadores de Bronce with the Seattle Men’s Chorus

April 11 & 12 McCaw Hall Seattle Men’s Chorus had a mucho bueno time last weekend, creating a concert that partnered with Bailadores de Bronces, an exciting local Mexican dance troupe. Just like the mission of SMC, the troupe wants to “break down cultural barriers and build bridges within the community,” making them ideal performing partners for the Chorus. Efforts to reach audiences in the Latino community were more vigorous than usual, hoping to entice them with a range of Spanish songs, including Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” Jennifer Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud,” Selena’s “Como la Flor,” Julio Iglesias’ “Un Hombre Solo,” and Gloria Estefan’s “Conga.”

Dance rhythms and historical stylings were another focus of the concert, including zarzuelas of Spanish opera, tangos of Argentina, and salsas of Brazil and Cuba. The wide range of David Maddux’s arrangement talents were on full display, along with an original song of his. Assistant artistic director Eric Lane Barnes arranged a traditional folksong and an interesting full choral arrangement of “Killing Me Softly.”

The Chorus moved to the beat thanks to the intricate designs of choralographer Kathryn Van Meter and a large contingent of chorus dancers choreographed by Christopher Anderson. During “Conga,” the Chorus zigzagged in conga lines oppositely from row to row on the stage. At another point, the chorus became a rainforest thunderstorm, starting with hands whispering together, then snapping fingers for the

sound of raindrops, then cupped hands for large water drops, and progressing into the slapping of thighs and jumping on stage for thunder and a downpour.

A special interlude included a compilation of songs from the award-winning Broadway musical In the Heights, about a New York neighborhood. Guest singers Bo Mellinger and Heather Apellanes gave us a taste of the musical and story.

Almost the entire program was Spanish or Latin-related, but the variety was impressive. It was a reminder that “Latin America” includes so many countries. The inclusion of the Bailadores De Bronces allowed for a display of their beautiful costumes and some intricate footwork. During the singing of “La Bamba,” we were reminded that it was a song for a wedding and the wedding couples are supposed to tie a bow together using their feet. In this case, the two couples on stage were of the same sex, which is probably not their normal performance mode for that particular song.

The small band of accompanists included the unusual addition of trumpets. Kevin Gallagher provided his usual impeccable ASL interpretation, which adds a graceful note to every production. Captain Smartypants was there to provide support and fun, and the numerous soloists were often spectacular, with rather more soloists than usual, all in great voice.

If you happen to be in Bremerton this Saturday, you’ll be able to catch performance of Ole! Ole! Ole! at Washington Center for the Performing Arts at 7 p.m. The dance troupe won’t be attending, but you’ll be able to hear the rest of the lovely production. Alison Moyet, yet her vocals are silkier and a bit more sultry. Sim, on the other hand, sounds like a jazz veteran when he sings on his own – believe it or not – like an un-polished, swagger-less Michael Buble.

“Islands” was layered with fine guitar work, mostly by Croft, and spontaneous keyboard plunks from percussionist Jamie Smith. Opting for a drum machine instead of a traditional drum set, Smith provided a soft, uplifting electronic backbone to what otherwise could’ve been a set of overly melancholy tunes.

“Today is a very special day,” said Sim enthusiastically, with a little shyness. “Today is our first-ever headlining show in Seattle.

It’s very different from Neumos.” Indeed, The xx was the star attraction on Monday night, as a full house of eager fans got an early look at a musical act skyrocketing to success.

Live renditions of “Infinity” and “Shelter” matched the sleek-meets-broody versions found on The xx’s stunning debut of last year, listed on SGN’s Top Ten Albums/CDs of 2009. A cover of Kyra’s “Do You Mind”

was snuck in midway into the group’s hourlong appearance, though routinely performed re-dos of hits by Aaliyah and Ciara were absent on this night.

The concert’s pinnacle was a lush runthrough of “Basic Space,” the threesome’s latest released single in the U.S. – its whispery vocals, near-lazy guitars and light touches of bass and drums peeled away the sad, sensual fusion of The xx’s music, sometimes described as a cloudier Cure.

Just before the band’s one-song encore, Sim told the audience, “Say hi to mum and dad!” and then snapped a photo of everyone smiling widely. A tantalizing version of “Stars,” complete with a glittery silver curtain at the back of the stage, finished an impressive performance by these ambitious youngsters.

L.A.-based digital whiz Nasaj Thing offered an interesting, robotic collage of sounds during his brief pre-show set. But unfortunately, Swedish newbie jj struck out with a very flat, amateur performance – her Afro rhythm-pop hybrid sounded like a happy hour karaoke rendition of The Lion King.

“I’ve never been to Seattle, so I’m really looking forward to seeing it,” Maria told SGN in a phone interview from Mexico.

“Before the show, we are going to do a meet-and-greet. I can’t wait to meet everyone and sign autographs and chat with my fans.”

Club Papi, now in its 14th year, holds parties in 16 cities around the U.S. and Mexico.

The brand is known for their hot male dancers, stunning drag queens, and big-name Latino stars like Maria. According to Club Papi officials, the organization has wanted to bring the party to Seattle for a number of years and is excited to present their inaugural event this Sunday.

Maria, who just released her second solo album (she began her career in Kabah, one of the most important youth groups in the music industry in Mexico) and is riding high on the success of her latest tour, told SGN she is ready to show Seattle a good time. “Be prepared to enjoy the live show,” she said. “I am bringing two hot Mexican dancers with me and we are going to have a blast. It will be a wonderful experience!”

Maria told SGN that during the show, there will be a drawing to find four winners who will get to go backstage and hang out with the Club Papi performers. According to the promoters, the April 18 show will consist of the best the touring party has to offer.

Maria says that making music for people to dance to and have a good time listening to is important to her. “I love making music for Gay people,” she said. “My latest CD, Amante de lo Ajeno, is an homage to the pop divas of the ‘80s. My Gay fans love it.”

Performing in front of Gay fans is something that Maria says she looks forward to.

In fact, after Sunday night’s show, she and Club Papi are Phoenix-bound to participate in the city’s Gay Pride celebration.

“The Gay community has been very nice to me. All of my Gay fans are so loving and caring,” Maria told SGN. “Also, I love the vibe inside of Gay clubs – it’s a party all the time, all night!”

Maria says that although she is heterosexual, she is a part of the Gay community.

“I have a lot of Gay friends and, like most everyone, Gay family members. I am 100% pro-Gay marriage and pro-adoption. Most of all, I am pro-love!”

Following Ryan was no easy task, but contestant number two, Brian “Bee Jay” Maxwell, seemed to hold his own as he crooned us with “Lady” by Kenny Rogers, and for his second attempt at advancing to the finals, gave us a heartfelt rendition of another Rogers song, “I Can’t Unlove You.” Contestant number three, the lovable and energetic Dante Rogers, brought star quality and a fun attitude to the competition.

Dante’s first offering, John Legend’s “Ordinary People,” was a spot-on performance of the R&B hit, but it was his second pick – newly openly Gay Ricky Martin’s “Living La Vida Loca” – that won the judges and the audience over.

The surprise of the night, by a long shot, was miss Sabina Pitts, who seemed to say “I

came here to sing what I love and there ain’t nothing you can do about it.” Although the song choices may not have been the smartest move, Sabina was having a good time, which transferred to the audience quite well.

Kellye Rowland, contestant number five, was a breath of fresh air. Kellye did not show up to simply “impersonate” anyone; she showed up to sing from the heart and to win a spot in the Pride Idol finals. Taking a chance (brave!), she sang Annie Lennox’s “Why” and then gave serious attitude as she delivered a great version of Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man.” When all was said and done – and trust me, there was a lot said and a lot done – the winner of the first Pride Idol preliminary was Kellye Rowland (who will go on to compete at the June 20 Pride Idol Finals) and “wildcard” winner Dante Rogers (who will get one more chance to make it to the finals during the June 13 Wildcard Round).

2010 Pride Idol takes place Sunday nights at 8 p.m. inside R Place on the third floor.

The very charming Eduardo Khawam, a local events producer, returns from last season to host the show. DJ and co-host Sexxxual Chocolate has over 10,000 songs (covering everything from the 1950s to now) for you to choose from.

They wasted no time, however, diving right into the posi-energetic pop anthem “Kolniour,” and the hard-hitting, drum-heavy “Tornado.” Mid-set, the album’s single, “Go Do” really made me fall in love with Jonsi’s music again, after not having listened to Sigur Ros in at least a couple of years. I think I even fell in love with life for a quick minute, but I can’t be too sure.

“Around Us” was an appropriate closer, featuring Jonsi on the piano and singing harmonies with a loop of his own vocals. After a short ovation, the band came back on for an encore, Jonsi donning a very tall feathered headdress. The 15th and final song of the evening was “Grow Till Tall,” a nice, mellow way to say goodnight, with a slow build that never really came to any resolve.

This show was not just about the music, though. The visual aspect of this tour is of epic proportions, designed by Jonsi and partner/Riceboy Sleeps collaborator and “Go” guitarist Alex Somers, and the London-based 59 Productions. Full of hand-drawn animation, projected images, and video, it was all at once its own artistic piece and a visible manifestation of the songs themselves. Forest scenes of birds and butterflies, wolves, owls, and deer, flowers sprouting and blooming, thousands and thousands of marching insects – these images truly brought the music to life.

As an overall experience, the performance was among the best I’ve seen. Whether you prefer subdued, ambient music, or vivid and incisive; whether you prefer music that conjures visions of desolate, gray ice plains or warm, sunny wildflower fields; whether you prefer English or Icelandic or fictional language; this band will satisfy all your auditory, ocular, mental, and emotional needs.

And there is no language barrier here; the openly Gay Jonsi sings like a fucking angel, and he’ll make all your fantasies of woodland creatures and the like become totally real.

Eric Andrews-Katz: When did you start performing on stage?

Greg McCormick Allen: I auditioned for the Civic Light Opera in 1985 when they were casting for The Music Man. I got a part in the ensemble.

Andrews-Katz: How did you get involved with the 5th Avenue Theatre?

McCormick Allen: In 1991, they were having auditions for the Meredith Wilson musical Here’s Love, a musical based on Miracle on 34th Street. They were also auditioning for “extras” in West Side Story. I wanted to be in West Side Story and got cast in Here’s Love.

Andrews-Katz: Your credits include On the Town, White Christmas, and Beauty and the Beast, among others. Do you count yourself as more of a “family” musical actor, opposed to more modern shows?

McCormick Allen: Generally, the family musical is what I get cast in. It’s sort of the look that I have and the way my talents are; they are more geared towards that kind of musical. I don’t have the tendencies for poprock shows.

Andrews-Katz: What kind of rituals do you have before going on stage?

McCormick Allen: None, really. I get into costume and makeup and when it’s time for the show to start, I just go. I do make it a point to generally go around and wish everyone a good show.

Andrews-Katz: Do you count yourself as more of an actor, singer, or dancer, or are you more a “triple threat”?

McCormick Allen: Personally, I consider myself a dancer who can sing and act. Others may have different opinions.

Andrews-Katz: Which roles would you like to eventually play?

McCormick Allen: Eventually I’d like to play Bobby in Crazy For You. I like “tap” musicals as that’s more my personal style.

I’d like to do Avenue Q. I think it would be fun to do anything in that show.

Andrews-Katz: And if you could play one of the great “diva” roles, which would you want to play?

McCormick Allen: Mama Rose [Gypsy] would be awfully fun. There’s such a broad spectrum that character shows during that show.

Andrews-Katz: Do you always play the Danny Kaye role in White Christmas, or do you ever want to play the Bing Crosby role?

McCormick Allen: I’ve only played the Danny Kaye role. When dancing exhausts me a little more, I’d like to switch to the other.

Andrews-Katz: For On the Town, do you think it’s Bernstein’s music, Comden/ Green’s book and lyrics, or is it the choreography that gives this show its legs?

McCormick Allen: I’d probably have to say the book and lyrics. The book is written very well, and it takes quite a bit to screw up the show. Our choreographer, Bob Richard, is really good and fun to work with.

Andrews-Katz: The subject matter of three sailors on leave looking for “action” was controversial in 1946. Do you think it still has a taboo ring to it?

McCormick Allen: In today’s age with everything that people are exposed to, I don’t think it’s taboo today. People have so much access to the internet and are growing up faster than they did back then.

Andrews-Katz: Do you have a favorite part of On the Town?

McCormick Allen: One of my favorite scenes – and definitely the hardest scene – is the museum scene. The sheer physicality is exhausting. By the time it is finished, we (Billy Wildrick and I) are both worn out and thankful we have the next scene off to recoup.

Andrews-Katz: Bill Berry recently staged On The Town at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse, and is now at the helm of Seattle’s production. Will there be any differences between the two?

McCormick Allen: There are differences. The actors who played the three sailors (at Papermill) were ballet dancers. … There is also a different choreographer in Seattle.

There are certain bits that we tried and just had to adapt for our own production.

Andrews-Katz: Village Theatre mounted On the Town in 2006, and you were in that production, as well. Were you in the same role or a different one?

McCormick Allen: At Village Theatre I played Chip, and so now I get to play someone else: Ozzie. It’s definitely interesting to play a different role in the show.

Andrews-Katz: When a musical is made into a successful movie, do you find it more difficult to play the part?

McCormick Allen: It really doesn’t bother me at all. Usually when a musical is turned into a movie, a lot of things get changed. The film On the Town changed a lot of the music, and the script is a bit different – more “Hollywood,” so to speak.

On the Town first hit Broadway in 1944 with a lead role played by Nancy Walker as Hildy. Choreographer Jerome Robbins wanted to set a ballet to the music of Leonard Bernstein and originally came up with the concept. After husband/wife team Comden/Green joined (not only as composer/ lyricist, but also as main cast members), the show was fleshed out into a full-fledged musical, giving the world such songs as “New York, New York,” “I Can Cook, Too” and “Carried Away.” The show enjoyed two revivals on Broadway in 1971 and 1998.

continued from cover of significant shade from some of the other girls. Tatianna told me she wanted to take the Race plunge during season one, but at only 20, she was too young! “I vowed I was not going to stop trying until I made it.”

I wanted to know how someone so young stayed grounded in a very tough competition. “I just kept [thinking] in the back of my head, I was chosen for a reason,” Tatianna explained. “I pushed everything aside when I got on the main stage. I did make great friends. Juju, Pandora and Jessica were all great.”

Not on that list? Raven! I wanted to know what their relationship is like now. “We don’t have one,” Tatianna said. “When I left the show I had a lot of negative feelings toward her,” she told me. “Since watching the show I have even more negative feelings toward her. If you feel so on top of it, why spend so much time on what I’m doing?

Concentrate on yourself.”

So what did Tatianna think of Tyra? Does she feel Tyra’s behavior is based on her age?

“Me and Tyra are the same age,” Tatianna said. “I don’t necessarily think it’s young.

She came into the competition with a kind of strategy being the way she was. I don’t think she’s a bad person, but just a little misguided in the way she was acting toward her competition.”

That is some smart analysis. Almost as smart as Tatianna’s Britney impersonation, which I think was one of her top moments on the show. “At first I was really scared,” she said. “When I did it I was surprised how easy it came out of me. I was really proud of myself.”

Tatianna knew the last challenge was going to be a tough one for her since it required her to come up with three looks. “Throughout the whole season the judges didn’t particularly enjoy the clothing I brought,” she said. “I thought, ‘Do I have enough clothes for this?’ I had to make something.”

Clothes were an issue, but so was the lip-sync for her life. She explained that the show gave them all the songs to memorize about a month before production, but this week’s song was changed out three days prior! “All the lyrics are ad-libs,” Tatianna explained. “So I tried to distract them from my mouth!”

It’s great Tatianna used the show to learn more about herself and drag. I can’t wait to see how she evolves. She’s a trooper!
