Beyoncé April 1 Key Arena You have to hand it to Beyoncé for keeping her fans on their toes, both figuratively and literally. Only a month’s lead time for a sudden, one-off US date came as a shock to fans and created quite a scramble for tickets. And did our 27-yearold diva deliver? You bet she did, and then some. Beyoncé tore it up at Key Arena, in what could only be described as a Beyoncé megafan’s dream show.

Rumored to be something of a “rehearsal” run, this handful of dates on the “I Am” tour included four nights in Canada and only one Yevgeny Sudbin US stop at Seattle’s Key Arena.

Think twice about sitting in the first row of the audience, since on many occasions, you risk getting confettied, asked to verify something, asked to be humiliated along with her by putting on a Princess Leia hairdo, and other audience interaction moments (and

ad, and that by telling all these secrets about herself, no relationship could say, “you never told me that!” The experience feels kind of like getting an ad hoc life-dump.

However, it is all tightly scripted and there are many small technical enhancements built in. Video screens show movies of her parents, still shots of her family, and headlines on newspaper covers that look real (some may be real, others are clearly manufactured).

Hathaway goes over the rainbow to play Garland Anne Hathaway has enraptured queer audiences in movies as varied as Brokeback Mountain, The Princess Diaries, The Devil Wears Prada and Rachel Getting Married.

Now she’s taking on the mother of all roles as she prepares to play the 20th century’s most legendary Gay icon, Judy Garland.

Hathaway will star in both Broadway and movie adaptations of Gerald Clarke’s biography Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland.

(Clarke wrote the book that was the basis of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Oscar-winning turn in Capote, so his imprimatur on biopics is a valuable one.) The actress proved at this year’s Oscars that she can sing, so get ready to hear her belt “Over the Rainbow” and “The Trolley Song” and any number of Garland standards in a way that will probably make Rufus Wainwright very jealous. No director has been attached to either project, and no dates have yet been set. But listen for that “clang clang clang.”

Directed by Peter Morgan, the film will co-star Lewinsky as herself, sort of; she’ll appear only in news footage edited throughout. Michael Sheen and Helen McCrory will reprise their roles as Tony and Cherie Blair from The Queen and The Deal, which Morgan wrote. Shooting dates have yet to be announced, but in the meantime, no blue dress jokes please. They’re so ‘90s.

Kutcher, Heigl, Selleck shoot for Five Killers Gay director Robert Luketic has had success with comedy (Legally Blonde and, to a lesser extent, Win a Date with Ted Hamilton! and Monster-in-Law) and sly heist dramas (21), so it was perhaps inevitable that he take a stab at action-comedy. His latest production, Five Killers, boasts an interesting mix of young stars and seasoned vets: Ashton Kutcher stars as a hitman who retires from the murder-for-hire biz after falling in love with computer technician Katherine Heigl. But when he discovers that he’s become a target, the two flee for their lives.

Co-starring in the film are Tom Selleck and Catherine O’Hara (as Heigl’s overprotective parents) as well as Martin Mull (as Kutcher’s one-time handler). In production now in France and Atlanta, these Killers will blast their way onto the big screen in the summer of 2010 – unless it’s all some elaborate Punk’d scenario to rid Selleck of his trademark mustache.

The lead story will spotlight Kate Kane, the heiress who now stalks the night as Batwoman, and the issue’s co-feature stars Renée Montoya, the former Gotham City police detective who has taken over the mantle of faceless vigilante The Question. Given the somewhat dicey record that major comics companies have had in dealing with queer characters, seeing these two Sapphic sisters front and center on one of DC’s flagship titles definitely seems encouraging.

And doesn’t this pairing scream out for a big screen adaptation? If they can make two Hulk installments, then one summertime Lesbian superhero popcorn movie shouldn’t be too much to ask. Detective Comics #854 hits stands on June 24.

the constantly shifting duality of the characters to speak for themselves without any unnecessary visual shenanigans.

It helps that both of his young actors give bare, almost naked performances keeping things grounded in disheveled reality. Their rapport never felt false to me, didn’t come across like a convenient plot device taking things from A to B, both Gaitan and Flores digging into their character’s very souls.

By the time they entered the home stretch I wanted them to succeed, imagining a world without the two of them in it together one I was starting not to want to see come to pass.

I wish so much of the early parts didn’t feel so routine and perfunctory, and I also wish a second-act shootout wouldn’t have

existed at all. I also think that, when he’s focusing on the machinations of the gangs, Fukunaga lets the material get the better of him, dialing up a slew of tired editing and camera tricks the rest of the picture thankfully eschews.

In the end, I’m good with Sin Nombre, the powerful performances by the two leads and the building poignancy of the central thread enough to put it over the top. It isn’t a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it does get the job done, the melancholic sturm und drang another reminder that the world isn’t all wine and roses, and that sometimes laying it on the line for your dreams is a job covered in the blood of tragedy.

anytime. But surrounding these excellent gentlemen are a supporting cast with pitchperfect deliveries, facial expressions, timing, etc. Kudos to Russ Banham for casting, and for trusting his actors to do what needs doing.

George brings Lenny (a mentally challenged but brutally strong man) to a new ranch, after running away from “what happened in Weeds,” and tries to keep Lenny from doing anything wrong, like accidentally killing animals. They meet Candy (Bradley Harrington), a one-handed old man who lost his hand on that ranch – and that’s the only reason they keep him on; Slim (John Murray), the mule-skinner, expert at his job; Carlson (Gavin Cummins), a not-verysensitive hand; Whit (Benjamin Harris), a younger hand; The Boss (Keith Dalhgren); The Boss’s son, Curley (Tim Gouran); Curley’s wife (Hilary Pickles); and Crooks (Marcel Davis), a disfigured black hand who sticks to himself, or is isolated due to his skin color. Each character is there for a reason, and each is important. Davis is particularly heartbreaking due to his character’s loneliness and isolation.

The multi-level set, by Craig Wollam, excels at creating atmospheric changes, with the help of lighting (Andrew Smith), beatup costumes (K.D. Schill), and haunting musical interludes (M. Elizabeth Eller). The tricky business between Lenny and Curley’s wife is delicately handled, and completely plausible.

Watching it in theatrical form is a lot faster than reading the book, for those young adults or budding adults that are supposed to read it for school. And while not advocating blowing off the novel, it packs a bigger punch in person. It only has one more weekend to run, so fit it in if you can! Of Mice and Men Seattle Public Theater Through April 12 Great drama is hard to pull off these days.

People want to laugh and forget. But sometimes, it’s important to remember and experience. Of Mice and Men, at Seattle Public Theater, is an important experience. This classic story of poverty and fractured lives reminds us that we have choices when we face adversity, whether to avoid others and look out only for ourselves, or band together to take care of each other.

George and Lenny try to take care of each other. And they meet others along their way who could enrich their possibilities by joining together. If they pool their money, they can really buy that plot of land and take care of each other, stay put, and “live off the fat of the land.” Lenny is an unusual character. There are so few characters in classics that are “simple” or incompetent. There’re lots of evil people and lots of good people and ‘most everyone is smart. Steinbeck acknowledges the existence of people who can barely function in our society and need caring for.

Steinbeck’s play and novel are both written about a time in our recent past where people who couldn’t fit in and function were tossed along the side of the road or disposed of like diseased animals. Though the Depression officially began with the Crash of 1929, in 1937, it was still going strong. And many of the safety nets we take for granted today, like Social Security and unemployment, did not exist back then. It is really only very recent history that includes safety nets. Otherwise, life was pretty brutal to the “have-nots.”

Classic Steinbeck illuminates at Seattle Public Theater

Seattle can’t get enough of Ten Grands

Ten Grands, the fundraising concert for music education, sold out Benaroya Hall for its early April concert, the second year the Portland-based charity has performed in the Emerald City. The Snowman Foundation has raised more than $2 million in its decade in Portland. The first Seattle concert last year raised more than $30,000, which was distributed to more than a dozen different Puget Sound organizations. Final results of the 2009 Seattle concert are still being tabulated.

Like many in the cheering audience, this scribe really did not know what to expect.

Yes, 10 grand pianos and 10 talented Northwest pianists would be on stage, but the program was a complete mystery to this writer as he and his guest filed in. A “Tribute to Gershwin” started the lengthy program with all 10 pianists on stage when the lights went up. Mounted on various levels, 10 grand pianos filled the Benaroya stage. Sixteen gigantic, oversized bouquets of florescent orange roses – some with six- or eight-dozen roses – glowed under the stage lights. Three towering candelabras filled the upstage area, with Benaroya’s world-famous pipe organ anchoring the back wall of the stage. It was a stunning look.

The Gershwin tribute started with one pianist playing the opening, main theme from Rhapsody In Blue. As the spotlights picked out one player after another, solo versions of Gershwin classics – “The Man I Love,” selections from Porgy & Bess, and other Gershwin followed. All 10 soloists were in the spotlight with a major Gershwin title.

After the hearty applause, each pianist took a solo turn. Bogey Vujkov, one of the Seattle-based guests (he’s is fixture at a downtown music store and often plays there in their frequent free concert series) delighted the capacity crowd with “Over The Rainbow.” Every aspect of keyboard artistry followed – stride piano, honky tonk offerings, classical themes, pop anthems. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see the ghost of Liberace join the group,” Ms. Guest laughed affectionately between numbers.

A rousing “When The Saints Go Marching In” pulled the 10 back together. “Starry Night” ended Act One with all 10 at the keyboards.

After a lengthy intermission, Act Two started with all 10 artists reunited on stage for a collective version of the William Tell Overture, immortalized as the theme from

the fondly remembered Lone Ranger radio and TV series. Alas, this powerful work was used to quiet the audience as Act Two started. “We thought that would get your attention,” the host laughed at the end of the number. Groupings dominated Act Two – four pianists, including two young students, gathered for Eight Hands, a Linus and Lucy Peanuts sequence, a few solo numbers, a crowd-pleasing Beatlemania all led up to the climax of the concert.

For “A Little Something From Ludwig,” 250 young choral voices filled the stage and the center aisles. Students from five local vocal groups joined the 10 keyboard artists for excerpts from Beethoven, ending with his choral “Ode To Joy” from his beloved Ninth Symphony. The crowd, full of parents and proud grandparents, couldn’t get enough. Ten Grands will surely be back in Seattle next year. She makes herself comfortable in the large chair and on the large couch available. She also smokes a couple of very real cigarettes during the show, so be aware (she’s unfortunately said to be a chain smoker). The lighting guy turns the lights onto the audience several times as she quizzes the audience about numerous things, such as whether she should marry a fan in Boston who sent her a fan letter which contained a proposal. She reads the audience the proposal, and we are to tell her if it’s a good or bad idea.

Most of the time, you just have to laugh at her delivery, or the absurdity. Fisher slips in a couple of very sober moments, but that makes the rest of the funny even funnier. She is a consummate performer, and knows the stage very well. She is self-confident, even when revealing “dirty details” to us left and right. The political humor fits Seattle very well, with lots of digs at Republicans. If you love celebrity, you’ll love this show. If you love humor, you’ll love this show. At Neumos, The Presets headline a four-act show on Tuesday night – a good spot to work up a sweat if the previous evening’s Franz Ferdinand concert left you with extra adrenaline. The performance should attract a night-owl crew of young, Gay hipsters that will not only be ready to shake their moneymakers but they’ll also love the opportunity to wear breathable, flesh-revealing threads (can I get an amen for American Apparel tanks?) in and outside the venue, seeing that we’ve finally entered into what appears to be spring – or not winter. Besides the two mentioned singles, The Presets should include “I Go Hard, I Go Home,” “My People,” “Truth & Lies,” “Beat On/Beat Off,” and “Down Down Down” on their set list. The Presets seek American breakthrough

The Presets April 14 – 9 PM Neumos $15 Every band wants to make it in America, no doubt about it. The Presets are no exception. The Australian punk-house duo isn’t entirely obscure in the United States, not if you count their successful tour last year with fellow Aussies, Cut Copy. Still, they’ve remained lowbrow on the dance scene in comparison to top acts Justice, The Crystal Method, and Ladytron – and here’s where they hope the tide will turn. Much like Fischerspooner, The Presets use a lot of deep keyboards and playful vocals for an ultimate blend of cool electronica such as on the praised single and YouTube favorite, “Talk Like That” – there’s an urge to use the living room couch as a trampoline, but there’s also a desire to just lock yourself in a room, shut the lights off and listen intently to the

continued from cover least. That his technique equals or surpasses any modern pianist’s is, I think, secondary to the musicality that informs his every note.

Control, clarity, power, poetry, charm, drama … indeed, his playing left nothing to be desired. It was all about the music. No affectations or extraneous motions drew one away from the musical flow. His program extended all the way from the classical poise of Scarlatti and Haydn through Chopin to the thunderous octaves of the “Precipitato” movement of Prokofiev’s ‘Sonata No. 7 in B-flat major.’

Sudbin already has quite a list of awards for his CDs. He began this recital with a couple of Sonatas (K. 466 and K. 427) from his CD of Domenico Scarlatti. In his own very interesting program notes, he wrote, “The colours and moods implied in the sonatas, as well as the kind of keyboard technique required – which was possessed by very few harpsichordists at this period – are so advanced that I can’t help but wonder whether the composer was somehow anticipating the modern piano.” What we heard was designed to convey both the clarity of the harpsichord and the “colours and moods” Sudbin mentioned. He thus established from the beginning that he is an intellectual, as well as sensitive, artist. Indeed, clarity of thought was evident throughout the recital.

After a witty, delightful ‘Sonata in E minor’ by Haydn, we entered the utterly different world of Chopin via four of his mazurkas. Unlike the timid mazurkas played

by Dmitri Alexeev recently at Meany Hall, these were robust and masculine, while lacking nothing in poetry, dance-like propulsion, and color. Sudbin showed he is a master of piano colors, taking us from beautiful, flute-like softness to warm, bass-filled crescendos. I was reminded most of William Kapell’s assertive manner with these pieces.

Indeed, there was much about Sudbin’s selfassured, straight-backed manner at the keyboard that mirrored Kapell.

Two “Fairy Tales” by Nicolai Medtner (1880-1951) opened the second half. “Why nobody plays Medtner?” remarked the great Vladimir Horowitz. To be sure, Sudbin is one of that composer’s few champions these days. At Meany, he played Medtner’s “Sonata ‘Remeniscenze.’” Even in these short “Fairy Tales,” the pianist showed a broad landscape of emotions and pianistic tone. In his program notes, Sudbin suggests Medtner benefits from repeated encounters.

Prokofiev’s ‘Sonata No. 7 in B-flat major’ closed the program. While the outer movements showed Sudbin’s phenomenal tech-

audio potpourri of beaming, jumpy sounds.

It’s this summertime single from 2008 that gave Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes their first real breakthrough on this side of the Pacific, though a previous hit “This Boy’s in Love” scored the pair an early following.

Based in Sydney, The Presets have already enjoyed commercial success and acclaim on their home turf, earning industry awards for “Best Dance Release,” “Best Group,” and “Album of the Year” for the well-executed sophomore effort Apocalypso.

Why should Gay music fans care about The Presets? Because the rage at the moment is electro-rock fusion, which actually began in 2004 with bands like Franz Ferdinand and The Killers, but has steadily become clubbier and less rock – this is where The Presets come in, they’re more of a dance act than anything else. And because the duo’s songs are catchy, full of fun energy and put you in a flirtatious mood when combined with a stiff martini or a bag of cheap poppers (not that I’ve ever done that). And also

because there’s a curious, homoerotic thing going on with these guys, as evidenced on the video for “This Boy’s in Love” – two shirtless men wrestling in a milk bath? The Presets strike me as a younger, butcher and less kitschier Pet Shop Boys, an artist with the right songs, right sound, right moves and are just waiting for that right time to peak –

motions was everywhere mirrored here. And the dominant feeling behind this exercise was joy. To move in such strict symmetry with the music had to be as much fun and as rewarding as it was physically demanding.

And, most importantly, that fun was communicated big time to the audience.

The moves were as complex and challenging as their origins: xaxado, samba, ballroom dance, celebrations, and capoeira are mentioned in the program notes as among the sources of inspiration. They go on to say, “Our body (Grupo Corpo) learned how to dance on the street, and the language of Pederneiras’ choreography is essentially a modern one.” Joy and humor, mixed with violence and ambiguity, filled this choreographer’s transformation of classical movements into a kind of Brazilian break dancing.

The extremely well recorded music was composed by Phillip Glass and Lenine, who was told simply to supply 40 to 50 minutes of music and to “have fun!”

Only two works filled the program. The first, to music by Phillip Glass, was called, oddly enough, ‘Seven or Eight Pieces for a Ballet.’ The delightful use of colors, especially in the costumes, was almost as important as the dancing itself. A beaded wall behind the stage also changed colors as did the costumes. Despite the repetitive nature of the music, the effect of the whole work grew Reviewer Rod Parke can be reached at more and more satisfying as it went along.

The dancers included many handsome rmp62@columbia.edu. nique, rousing the audience like nothing else, it was the quieter middle movement that impressed most with its lyrical 3/4 time song, full of repose and sustained lines. The last movement was last played in Benaroya Hall as an encore by Yefim Bronfman in late 2007, and the effect was electrifying. Sudbin was no less exciting or powerful, and perhaps a bit more nuanced. The ordinarily reserved Canadian audience responded with a standing ovation, which is not an everyday happening as in Seattle.

Sudbin responded with three rapid-fire encores: the same Scarlatti sonata he had played as the second item (without repeats this time), Scriabin’s “Mazurka #1, Op. 3 in G minor,” and a Rachmaninov song “Floods of Spring, Op. 14,” transcribed by Sudbin.

Tall, very slender, with large, dark eyes dominating an open, very attractive face, Sudbin confirmed his lack of pretension at a CD signing in the lobby after the recital. A long line of fans waited eagerly for a chance to experience a more personal contact with this young man, and he did not disappoint.

Those big eyes sought rather than avoided personal contact. Opposite in body build from an Andre Watts or Garrick Ohlsson, he did not suggest the great power of his intellect and technique.

We eagerly await his return to the Pacific Northwest!

Grupo Corpo celebrates being a very diverse group, with Anglo-Saxons in the distinct minority.

Compared to the second work, ‘Breu,’ the first dance seemed in retrospect almost classical in its restraint and formal patterns.

‘Breu,’ on the other hand, was wild and violent, both in the music and dance. From the program notes: “What sets the tone in ‘Breu’ is the power, harshness, and edginess of the movements repeated in the zone just above the ground level. The sudden falls and the painful trudging returns to the upright position seem to confine the dancers’ bodies close to the ground.” Indeed, for some the writhing on the floor went on a bit too long.

But the overall effect of ‘Breu’ was far from unpleasant. The fascination of moves never before seen and of acrobatics of astonishing skill left the audience in awe of the spectacle. And the music was equally compelling, using extreme dynamics and shifting moods to make it all intensely alive.

Written in eight movements, it included nature sounds, classical instruments, and hard rock.

Grupo Corpo already has a reputation in Seattle and sold out all three evenings at Meany Hall. One would be well advised not to miss them when they return!

by Mercy Moosemuzzle SGN Contributing Writer Stunt Girl Mercy, Cuteness, Destiny Galvino and Dandy Speculum really enjoyed Stunt Girl at Village Theater. The play is a new musical about turn-of-the-century feminist hero, Nelly Bly. The script by Peter Kellogg moved nicely. The music by David Friedman was great. Steve Tomkins’ direction made the many scenes cohere into a pleasing whole. His choreography was also hot.

Sarah Chalfy sang and danced well as Nellie. John Patrick Lowrie had a good voice and comic presence as Joseph Pullitzer.

Dane Stockinger was strong as Arthur, Pullitzer’s mentee and Nellie’s lover.

Destiny said every part of the production was flawless. Dandy was impressed with how well Scott Fyfe’s set changed. Cuteness liked how well the performance maintained the feeling of the era. Mercy liked how fresh the play felt and the fact that it put the current issue of media sensationalism in context.

Emerald City Comicon

by Rajkhet Dirzhud-Rashid SGN A&E Writer The sun was shining, daffodils were blooming, and those in costume at last week’s Emerald City Comicon were sporting all of the energy that signaled a thumbsup that, yes, spring had finally arrived in the Northwest – at least for now.

On hand at this year’s Comicon were a banquet of movie and television stars from the sci-fi/fantasy universes, including Dollhouse’s Tamoh Penikett, and Ray Park (Darth Maul in one of the recent Star Wars

chapters), as well as Jewel Staite (Kayley from Firefly), to name but a few of the big names. Also available were artists and writers from mainstream comic houses like DC and Marvel, and more than a few alternative title artists and writers as well, including Suicide Girls (who created quite a stir at last year’s and this year’s con, and were having a “discussion” about “motorboating” when I arrived last Sunday), and a new local group, Hypergate Publishing. The artist and writer in attendance gifted me with issue number one and two of their Artemis title, a slick manga comic set in post-apocalyptic times,

Emerald City Comicon

boasting a tasty babe as the heroine and a plotline similar to other anime titles. Sure to gain a fan following over time, I’d definitely keep an eye on this one if you’re a big anime fan.

Also available to fans were big name artists Mike Mignola, the guy who created and produced the Hellboy comic and movies, as well as my personal favorite, Mike Linsner, creator of Crypt of Dawn another comic boasting a busty heroine, this time with an ethereal theme. Unfortunately I’d left my own copy of Dawn at home, so Linsner had to sign the back of a postcard from another artist, something neither of us were entirely happy about, but which Linsner still did, being a nice guy and super fan artist.

For those who wanted to collect something a little more wearable, there were T-shirts from The Suicide Girls, and from other comic titles, as well as collectible action figures, including a set from the current Watchmen film, and the usual Spider-Man and Batman figures, which brought both parents and children to booths to buy and to “ooh” and “ah” over.

But the highlight at this year’s Comicon for me was when David Mack, artist/writer of one of my most treasured new reads, Kabuki, not only gifted me with a free, latest copy of the comic, but signed it as well. Moments like that one, and getting to chat it up with the latest in a series of artist working on the Vampirella character (made famous by the inimitable Frank Frazetta in the early ‘70s, when the title was published by Warren Publishing) were reasons to attend this year’s Emerald City Comicon. That and meeting other fans, dressed in anything from comic-inspired T-shirts, to full-on scifi/fantasy themed costumes, made the whole thing worth rushing across town for.

Don’t forget, this weekend both Sakuracon (at The Washington State Convention and Trade Center) and Norwescon (at the Doubletree Sea-Tac) roll into town to give you yet more chances to mingle and meet with other fans, artists and writers of the scifi/fantasy/anime genres, and yes, both will dealers rooms where you can have another shot at buying that one comic you might have missed at last weekend’s Comicon.

by Achy Obejas (Akashic Books, $15.95) The hero of this magical, mystical novel is middle-aged Usnavy, so named because his mother could see the ships of the U.S. Navy from their home near Guantanamo Bay. Born in pre-revolutionary Cuba, and a true believer in Castro, his life nonetheless remains intertwined with the crushing reality of America. He is devastated when his closest friend boards a ramshackle raft for Florida in 1994, and he scrabbles ashamedly for black market dollars to support his wife and daughter by driving American tourists around a crumbling Havana. Cuban-born Obejas’ previous novels, particularly Memory Mambo, focused primarily on the lives of people – young Lesbians among them – who escaped to America. The story here, exquisitely noble and fiercely illuminating, is of daily life in a Cuba where old blankets are marinated in weak beef stock and spices to be sold as sandwich meat. Queer content is slight – one muscular male character’s sexual identity is shadowy – but Lesbian author Obejas has crafted a haunting novel about physical deprivation, emotional exhaustion and spiritual strength that resonates with Queerly familiar defiance.

opener, “Crazy In Love,” which for the moment has replaced the not quite as punchy “Sweet Dreams.” Seeing the real live B stomping around To “Crazy In Love” was quite a thrill.

Appearing in a bejeweled dress with an exaggerated bustle, Beyoncé emerged from a cloud of smoke and shook her moneymaker for two solid hours. Shimmying up and down stage right into “Naughty Girl,” “Freakum Dress,” and “Get Me Bodied,” Beyoncé broke out every trademark dance move and pulled every face a fan could ask for. The audience – almost 100% female of various ages, or Gay and dressed to impress – couldn’t sit still as she did the “scissor leg” and “Naomi Campbell walk” in impossibly high heels.

The broad stage featured a similar setup as the 2007 tour, incorporating a group of barechested backup dancers, three female dancers, three backup singers, and her all-star all-female band (complete with no less than three percussionists). With such heavy percussion and so much going on at all times, the performance seemed reminiscent of Prince or Sheila E. What divas do you know that are willing to share their stage with so many other women? Beyoncé can, and does, because all eyes are glued to her every second – and she knows it. Even as she slowed

Metropolitan Lovers: The Homosexuality of Cities

by Julie Abraham (University of Minnesota Press, $29.95) It would seem to be an intuitive given that Gays are having sex in the cities of the world, to say nothing of congregating in discrete neighborhoods, gentrifying inner cities, fomenting political change and artistic ferment and weaving “social webs.” This analysis does nothing to challenge that belief. Rather, with a deft synthesis of literary, cultural and urban history, Abraham tracks how homosexuals changed cities, and how cities changed homosexuals. Her research ranges from 19th-century Paris, London and, surprisingly, Los Angeles, to social scientist Richard Florida’s 21st century assertion that the economic potential of cities depends in its cultural qualities – best provided

by Queer “social bohemianism.” While the author’s exploration of shifting urban forces and evolving cultural perceptions buttresses her theories, this academic study is most accessible when Abraham focuses on queer writing about the city. Armistead Maupin’s journalistic Tales of the City, James Baldwin’s use of New York neighborhoods, and Samuel Delany’s musing on the one-time sex trade of Times Square are among a long list of queer authors cited for their use of urban environments.

Straight Lies

by Rob Byrnes (Kensington Books, $15) Is this over-the-top caper novel fun?

Somewhat. Is it in any way plausible? Not a chance. Suspend all belief in narrative coherence, ye easy-going readers who chance to crack the cover. Chase LaMarca and Grant Lambert are Queerly incompetent petty thieves who think they’ve scored the ultimate blackmail target: Aging, heroically Gay actor Romeo Romero, acclaimed for championing Gay causes onscreen and off, is in truth a flaming heterosexual. The criminally inept duo of LaMarca and Lambert has proof of Romero’s devotion to dalliances with heavy-breasted damsels on unwieldy videotape (whatever happened to the simple camera phone?). Alas: an equally inept associate loses the tape, and it falls into the hands of an unscrupulous tabloid gossipmonger, now also intent on exposing Romero undown for a minute to deliver a heartfelt “Smash” and “Ave Maria” (wrapped in a floating, lace wedding gown against a background of crashing waves), people couldn’t take their eyes off her.

“Broken Hearted Girl,” not one of my favorites from the new album, actually won me over, as did “Scared of Lonely” later in the set. Although there were a few rough spots such as a runaway keyboard solo, there was little evidence that this was something of a warm-up show. At one point, Beyoncé’s delivery sped up during “If I Were A Boy,” leaving the backup singers scrambling; later, our heroine nearly stumbled as one of her stilettos caught the end of a pole on the rear of the stage. Even with these minor quirks, song after song was perfection.

It was endearing to watch a world tour in the making. Witnessing some kinks still being worked out made the magnitude of executing a production of this scale more real.

Speaking of divas never cutting corners on production values, I fully expected some over-the-top visuals and costume changes and certainly wasn’t disappointed. The superheroine-warrior chic costumes were designed by Thierry Mugler for Beyoncé and her alter-ego, Sasha Fierce. Costumes included a fitted gold and cheetah print corset, several full-length gowns, plenty of thighskimming dresses, vinyl bodysuits with embellished hips, an exquisite gold medallion dress, and a faux wedding gown. Every single detail was pure, glamorous fun.

less he forks over big bucks. Outrageous coincidences and unlikely plot twists ensue, as the comically charming crooks and the venally crooked journalist joust with each other. Fans of a good-humored comedy of errors with scant literary value will enjoy this featherweight trifle; anyone with a yen for substance best pass on it.

Deflowered: My Life in Pansy Division

by Jon Ginoli (Cleis Books, $16.95) Since the early 1990s, Pansy Division has rocked the Queer musical world with a ribald sense of humor and a rowdy enthusiasm for sex. Band founder Ginoli brings both qualities to this chipper, chatty mix of memoir and journal, along with a savvy insider’s perspective on the indie music scene and the world of Queercore rock that the band helped create. The book is at its most introspective as memoir, where Ginoli writes about his pre-San Francisco days and his life off the road. Journal sections, written with rollicking immediacy as Pansy Division toured, bring to life both the band’s heady days opening for Green Day, and less

exhilarating nights playing in front of homophobic (and often small) crowds in dive bars with crappy sound systems. He and longtime musical compatriot Chris Freeman are still making music – That’s So Gay was released this year, 16 years after the first album, Undressed – but Ginoli is genially sanguine about the band’s current low-key

career. And, judging from this laconic but absorbing account, he’s the furthest thing from a tormented rock star.

The Sting was the name of the club, and it had two sections, a big room where the band played, and a titty bar next door with a Saturday Night Fever-style dance floor. There was a secret passageway between the two so the bands could sneak a peek. A bouncer wore an “AIDS Kills Fags Dead T-shirt.” It made me realize how condemned you are to a certain reality if your band becomes popular enough – there was nothing remotely “alternative” about any of the venues we’ve played this week.

and literally flew over the heads of the audience out to a mini-stage. From there, she coaxed the crowd into singing along on “Irreplaceable” and a medley of hits by Destiny’s Child. The night came to a close with “Upgrade U,” “Video Phone,” and, of course, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).”

The standout final number was “Halo,” for which Beyoncé belted out the chorus at the top of her voice – her vocals have grown no-

ticeably stronger in recent years.

At 27, Beyoncé is in her prime – a fascinating woman and an absolutely riveting performer possessing undeniable magnetism, sheer talent, unapologetically unsubtle ways, and a ridiculously bumpin’ body.

She’s got so much more to give than most solo female artists around – and to top it all off, she has a sense of humor and is SO MUCH FUN!
