Karolina’s win didn’t come easy. She had Mike Bowers, Chase Silva, Ryan Crawford, Elisha Anderson, Kellye Rowland, Yee-Shin Huang, Josh Porterfield, and Sabrina Burton on her hands. Each contestant should be thanked for making June 20 Pride Idol Finals Round a night to remember!

It is not easy to go first, however Mike Bowers handled the pressure well. Tall, handsome, and gifted with a beautiful voice, Mike sang “Bring Me To Life” by Evanescence. Although it wasn’t the best song choice, Mike was entertaining and gave a good effort.

And then there’s the unsinkable Chase Silva. Chase told himself he was going to place – and week after week, he did

“Seattle’s LGBT community has a great deal of talent with an appreciative audience and wonderful bars,” Black Nail Productions owner Marcus LoRe told SGN. “What more can you ask for? It is all for fun, and is a safe place for people to meet. It seems like whenever the show starts the atmosphere becomes a place that is easier for strangers to meet each other.”

Marcus says that karaoke is all about the singers, and that the sound is a “very big part of it.” He told SGN he takes great strides to make sure the singers sound their best.

Marcus co-hosts the weekly karaoke events with Dustin Louie and Jerry Smith.

“I believe that the music should do the talking and the karaoke host should facilitate that,” he said.

Anyone who knows Seattle karaoke knows Marcus – he’s been doing shows for 17 years. “Sixteen out of the 17 years have been working with Floyd at Change’s Bar & Grill,” he told SGN. “Seven years ago, I began working with Barbie at Manray Video Bar and now at Purr Cocktail Lounge.”

Marcus spent his first five years of karaoke doing shows in Tacoma at the 733 Club and later at the 24th Street Tavern.

“I am forever grateful to my mom and dad and to all the people who’ve made their way to the shows,” he said. “I can’t tell you how appreciative I am for the community support. I believe that this is the longest running show in our LGBT community. It is a gift, and I could have never done it without everyone.”

“Some of the best memories I have come from the many singers and audience members,” Marcus continued. “I don’t know of anything that is more fulfilling than to have people thank me because the shows have made a difference in their lives. It has done the same for me.”

Seattle is a Gay karaoke town. Every night of the week at various bars throughout the city, the LGBT community and our allies come together to sing, and to make friends and lasting memories. There’s no doubt about it; karaoke is here to stay!

at The Cuff for over six years. “I’ve been doing karaoke and DJ hosting since 1989, in the days of the stone age before CDGs, mp3+g, or laptops,” he told SGN. “All we had were 30 laserdiscs with 28 songs on them. Makes me laugh when someone complains I only have 14,000 songs.”

Jonathan says he does karaoke for the camaraderie it brings to people as they listen and sing. “The joy I see on a person’s face when they find I have the song they have always wanted to try is a good feeling,” he said. “But most of all, the look of accomplishment on a singer’s face after they are done. For many, public singing can be very frightening and rewarding.”

As for memories, Jonathan says a couple of things come to mind.

“For the past six years, I’ve done shows with a group of handicapped adults who, through their singing, … come out of their shell and interact with each other,” he said. “Having my partner sing to me is a great memory, too. When I’m able to help someone become a better singer through a private comment or two, it’s rewarding to both of us. Also, the family of karaoke regulars that come to The Cuff and my other shows makes me feel welcome to be there.”

Quickies 11 Live Girls Theater Ethnic Cultural Theater Through June 26 Live Girls! is a Seattle theater company dedicated to producing and developing new plays by women. Somewhat comfortably ensconced in an underground theater in Ballard for quite a while, the company has now gone “mobile” and it has to risk their audience losing them among various performance venues, as many small companies have to do these days. Their current offering, Quickies Number 11 (wow, the 11th edition), is housed in the University District at the Ethnic Cultural Theater, which is a very nice venue, compared to a lot of them.

Quickies is an annual festival of shorts that is carefully curated by artistic director Meghan Arnette, with choreographed (!) interludes by Juliet Waller Pruzan – even the set changes are artistically organized. This is part of the fun of this festival. Seven short plays by women are presented. The evening has an overall theme of fantasy elements, displayed with various kinds of mental magic. The fun is in the diverse concepts and executions.

The Pick-up by Trista Baldwin is apparently inspired by her observation of a male pigeon’s attempts to attract a mate.

Set in a bar, Matt Lyman and William Hardyman both try to pick up Dayo Anderson.

Baldwin skewers the cliché, turning each of them into animals and showing their baser instincts at play.

The topper inhabitants (Sara Wright and Adam Davis) try to figure out how to save the relationship in order to finally contribute something meaningful to the world.

Doors and Tunnels by Sherry Narens is the most surreal of the evening. Dayo Anderson and Mariko Kita are “nowhere” or “anywhere” and don’t know what to do.

Superlative Winter’s Bone an Ozark miracle

Deep in the Ozark Mountains, Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) has a problem. Sheriff Baskin (Garret Dillahunt) has just informed the teenager that her missing father has put the family home and their wilderness property up as collateral towards his bail bond. That means if he misses his court date, the holder of the bond will own everything. That means Ree, her two younger siblings, and their mentally crippled mother will be thrown out into the streets to fend for themselves.

This cannot happen, but thanks to a code of silence that exists amongst her backwoods relatives, there isn’t too much a single person can do to find the Dolly family’s missing patriarch. Or is there? Ree fears the alternative far more than she does her kin’s deadly wrath, and the thought that they could lose everything because of her father’s stupidity is something she simply will not stand for.

Based on the stirring novel by Daniel Woodrell, director Debra Granik’s (Down to the Bone) sophomore effort Winter’s Bone is the best picture I’ve seen so far this year. This terrific cultural and psychological thriller is a horrifying descent into mystery

ingly explains to her younger brother how to properly skillet their breakfast, is beyond acute, and there were times I almost imagined I was watching some sort of documentary about Ozark culture instead of a viscerally unsettling thriller.

But her film is much more then a picture postcard of hard living amidst extreme conso mesmerizing that I couldn’t have taken ditions and even more extreme social momy eyes off of the screen had I even dared res. It is, in fact, a densely plotted mystery, try, and the film is made all the more poa puzzle box desperately in need of tent thanks to Lawrence’s being solved. Granik, along with superlafirst time co-screenwriter Anne Rosellini, does a startlingly masterful job of streamlining Woodrell’s richly complicated prose.

For those that haven’t read the book, the suspense is downright unbearable at times. For those of us who have, it is equally so.

The honest truth is that even though I knew the ultimate destination, Granik still had me guessing as to whether or not Ree or her family were going to survive this ordeal.

I began to wonder which way was up and if getting out from under was even a possibility for the Dollys.

I would be remiss if I did not mention that the majority of the cast rises up and equals her. Veteran character actors John Hawkes (Miami Vice, Me and You and Everyone We Know) and Dale Dickey (A Perfect Getaway, Changeling) are stunning, the former playing Ree’s nervy uncle Teardrop while the latter goes right for the jugular as the mountain community’s ironfisted matriarch Merab. The two tear up the screen, going places I never quite saw coming, each having indelible moments so rich and satisfying that in a perfect world Oscar should be screaming their names from some smoky log cabin rooftop for the remainder of the year.

As I mentioned earlier, the look and feel of the film borders on flawless. Michael McDonough’s (Down to the Bone) cinematography is robust and alive, while production designer Mark White (Transamerica) uses his Missouri locations with electric precision. Dickon Hinchliffe’s (Cold Souls) score ranks as one of the only ones this year I’m almost frothing at the mouth to own, as the composer’s original themes meld marvelously with songs and other works signature to the region.

There is so much to crow about I almost don’t know where to stop. This is a movie I went to the press screening with my fingers crossed that it could live up to the hype it had generated coming out of this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Not only did it do just that, but Granik’s consummate effort vaulted right over said hype to become something I’m dying to take others to so they get the opportunity to experience its richly satisfying gifts for themselves. It is, for my money, absolute perfection, and in

a 2010 that’s been something of a letdown, Winter’s Bone is the type of masterpiece that makes enduring all that trash happily worthwhile.

Ryan Crawford was, without a doubt, the most unique performer of the night. Ryan has an amazing voice and chose to re-write the words of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas” to “All I Want For Gay Pride.”

The performance was smart, engaging, and again, Ryan’s voice is always a treat to listen to.

Elisha Anderson, the 2010 Pride Idol crowd favorite, did not disappoint, singing a wonderful version of “Midnight Train To Georgia.” If you have not heard Elisha sing, then you’ve missed out. Elisha is the embodiment of what a vocalist is: she’s got range, sass, and loves the art of it all. Elisha won $500 and the title of first runner-up.

Kellye Rowland sang “Chasing Pavements” by Adele. Kellye is always a pleasure to watch perform and she was also a good supporter of Pride Idol – when not competing, she could be seen cheering on other contestants from out in the audience.

Yee-Shin Huang, another fan favorite, showed his vocal talent and range as a performer by singing “Lightning Crashes” by Live. Yee-Shin is an entertainer of the highest caliber; he’s got the voice and the look that will carry him far beyond the Pride Idol stage. In fact, less than 24 hours after the finals, he sang “Father Figure” onstage at the Hard Rock Cafe for the SO&P Pride Pin Launch Party. Great job, Yee-Shin!

by Garth Brooks. Josh is an amazing vocalist, and I hope we see him next year – with the right song choice, he could win this thing.

In one of the best performances of the night, Sabrina Burton sang En Vogue’s “Don’t Let Go.” The song was a perfect match for her voice, and the performance felt true and right.

That’s it, Idol fans. With the Finals Round closed, it marks the end of 2010 competition.

I don’t think I’m alone in saying that we are all going to have Pride Idol withdrawal for weeks to come. But I do have a homework assignment for you: Get your sexy asses onstage at one of the many Gay karaoke events and practice, because practice really does make perfect. A little Gay birdie told me that next year’s Seattle’s Pride Idol is going to be bigger and better. Andrew, Sister Domine Trix, and I want you to bring it!

Some thank-yous are in order. First and foremost, I want to thank each and every contestant – from the preliminary right up to the end – for getting involved with the community project. It is a brave thing to get up in front of an audience, sing, and be judged.

Yes, we had giveaways, and yes, there are cocktails – but at the end of the day, Pride Idol wouldn’t be what it is without you.

To my fellow judges, Andrew Miller and Sister Domine Trix: I love you guys. What a blast we had. I can’t wait to do this with you two next year. I didn’t know you coming into the competition but now we can call each other friends – and that is a beautiful thing – which is what community events are all about.

Seattle Parks and Recreation’s Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center celebrates the lives of people of color and the LGBTQ community the City has honored by naming parks after them.

The 15-minute performance featured actor Eric Anderson (no relation) portraying Cal Anderson, highlighting the events of the legislator’s life.

He spoke of how he was a decorated Vietnam veteran who was awarded two bronze stars, and found a calling for public service after the war.

He worked his way up from an assistant to Seattle Mayor Royer to a hero of the people in the true U.S. military tradition. Throughout his career, he worked for inclusion, fairness, and participation in the democratic process until his death from AIDS in 1995.

Many in the audience attested to the actor’s accuracy when he opened up his performance by making sure everyone in the room was registered to vote. He was met with smiles and genuine happy laughter from everyone in the room, including Cal Anderson’s mother.

During his tenure as legislator he helped to defeat two LGBT discriminatory ordinances. He is remembered and highly regarded for his integrity, courage, and compassion.

The park was named after Cal Anderson on April 10, 2003. In the northwest corner of the park, you can find a piece of Cal Anderson himself: his very own Coast Rhododendron plant. The Coast Rhododendron is the Washington state flower.

rity, as major film stars and television notables invade Broadway. As talented as these performers may be, the atmosphere that is created by their fame takes the fizzle out of that friendly, unpretentious Broadway energy. Film stars Scarlett Johansson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Denzel Washington were some of the biggest winners this year.

Add in the presence of mega rap star Jay-Z, Beyoncé, rockers Green Day, and Tony presenters including Antonio Banderas, Daniel Radcliffe, Michael Douglas, Helen Mirren, and Cate Blanchett, and the whole thing turns into a media circus – a competition to get an exclusive celebrity gossip sound-bite for a celebrity-focused blog, or the best photo of some celeb in a luxurious gown to put in the pages of People magazine. I preferred it when the actors may not have been household names, but had illustrious careers, were respected for years by their peers for their fine work in live theater, and were being rewarded simply for that.

Also, because of their pre-determined filming schedules, some of these popular 2010 Tony-winning movie stars are only doing limited runs which have either ended or are ending soon. This means that audiences will not have the opportunity to see their prize-winning performances. It seems as though many film stars are being cast on

Broadway just to bring star power and a wider audience during difficult economic times.

As a media person, I felt a bit perturbed that Scarlett Johansson and Catherine Zeta Jones, two of the biggest winners of the evening, were the only two Tony winners who didn’t take the time to come to the media room afterwards to answer questions from journalists, which brings me back to “movie stars.” Do they think they are just too important to follow the protocol of the evening?

I was happy for the wonderful choreographer Bill T. Jones, who won the Best Choreography Award again this year for his dance work for the musical Fela!. His first win was for Spring Awakening a few seasons ago. I found it ironic, however, that one of the most out and proud Gay men, who has been a champion for the Gay community for many years, won his award for choreographing a musical glorifying one of the most vehemently and publically outspoken homophobes: Fela, the African performer, who reveled in his machismo and having 27 wives. Fela was put on a pedestal for his rebellious and fearless political songs during his life, challenging authority and his government, but the darker side reflected sexism, paternalism, homophobia, and, in my personal opinion, misogyny.

The season didn’t seem that exciting this time around. The general buzz from theater people who saw many of the productions was that there weren’t many standouts. I got to see some, but not all, of the productions that were up this year for awards.

I liked Next Fall, a very well-written, engrossing, real, and thoughtful play produced

by Elton John and his husband, David Furnish, about relationships and philosophical/ religious differences and how those differences come into play between a couple, who just happen to be Gay men. While being in a Gay relationship wasn’t the focus of the play, it added another wonderful dimension to the depth of the play. It was well-crafted, with fine performances by all.

Sondheim on Sondheim is a touching look into the life and upbringing of Stephen Sondheim through filmed interviews with him, interspersed with performances of his monumental songs for the musical theater, sung by terrific and seasoned theater performers including the legendary Barbara Cook, Vanessa Williams, and Tom Wopat.

When Sondheim explains how loveless, abandoning, and verbally abusive his mother was towards him as a child, not only is it a heartfelt, moving, emotional experience for the viewer, but there is a sudden revelation for the audience as to where much of his subject matter in his songs originates, in his upbringing and the results of his upbringing in his adult years. He attributes the care, nurturance, and mentoring of Broadway lyricist Oscar Hammerstein, who welcomed him with love into his family since Sondheim was a young boy and was a “second father” to him, as literally saving his life and helping him on his musical path. Sondheim, who is Gay, tells us that he didn’t fall in love until he was 60. He is celebrating his 80th birthday this year, and this musical is a fitting tribute to him. Any lover of Stephen Sondheim’s music will want to see this show.

A Behanding in Spokane is a dark, absurd comedy that is an acting vehicle for the brilliant Christopher Walken, who plays a disheveled, wide-eyed, unpredictable fellow who comes searching in Spokane, WA for his hand, which was severed 30 years earlier. When some charlatans try to sell him a hand that they’ve stolen from a museum, claiming that it’s his, well, they’re not going to get away with that! There’s a seedy hotel room, a gun, handcuffing to hot water pipes, someone dousing the room in gasoline and a subsequent non-working cigarette lighter, a trunk full of old, grey left hands, and general mayhem. The play is just so-so, but Walken is worth seeing for his mastery as a great actor who can beautifully balance playing dark introspection juxtaposed with comic timing.

I’m hoping I have a chance to see Red, about artist Mark Rothko, and August Wilson’s Fences. I’m not as keen on the musical offerings, although the premise of Green Day’s American Idiot sounds intriguing.

Storm vs. San Antonio Spurs Mercy and Cuteness enjoyed the Storm vs. Spurs game. The Storm was clearly tired from their out of town play. Early in the Father’s Day game, four of their players put their hands on the ball, but were unable to score. By the end of the first quarter the home team had a 6-point lead which they expanded to an 82-61 win. This puts them 12-0, with good hopes for the championship. Swin Cash contributed 22 points, and Lauren Jackson 19.

Mercy liked it that LJ acknowledged a foul of hers. In the third quarter, Spurs player Roneeka Hodges pushed Sue Bird over.

It was clear that Bird had a painful injury.

At the end of the game, the team announced that it had been a strained knee, and Bird should be able to play the next game.

Cuteness said, “At times it looked more like a rugby game than a basketball game.

It was pretty rough around the edges. The Storm was understandably tired after coming off a road trip, and started out a bit sluggish, but then really pulled it together for an amazing win. But there was quite a bit of bulldozing going on and those kinds of games make me nervous, because I always think those are the kinds of games where players get hurt. Sure enough, Sue Bird got hurt – but is apparently OK – so not hurt badly. That type of play can spin out of control pretty fast.

Pearl Django Mercy ate up Pearl Django’s performance at Jazz Alley last week. The celebration of the new CD, Break Through the Mirror, included the welcoming of guitarist Troy Chapman and farewell to guitarist Neil Andersson. Band members included Troy Chapman (guitar), and Ryan Hoffman (guitar), Rick Leppanen (bass), Michael Gray (violin), and David Lange (accordion).

Gray’s violin and Lange’s accordion improvisations had a lusciousness that set the stage for a night celebrating the guitarists they have played with. Leppanen’s work on bass was hot. Mercy could see the bass player’s respect for the other guitarists who graced the stage. Chapman played part of the night with the group. Then Andersson joined in. Before the night was out, Gray brought up Greg Ruby and Ron Peterson, who had played guitar with the group before, as well as Frank Vignola, whose trio is coming to Jazz Alley soon. Mercy could see why Gray had said this was not a night for people who don’t like guitars. The guitarists’ riffs on “Waltz Under Paris Skies” were each more outrageous than the one before.

Canadian film Ormie, directed by Rob Silvestri, won Best Short Film. Lastly, the Polish film The Reverse won the SIFF Grand The 36th Annual Seattle International Jury prize for Best Director.

The 21st Annual Fool SeriFilm Festival concluded with a ous Awards, Gala screening of the new Robert Duvall film Get Low on Sunday, June 13. Over 400 feature films were presented during the 25-day event which is the largest, longest, and most audience-centered film festival in the United States.

Now for the best and worst of this year’s film orgy: First up are the Golden Space Needle Awards, which are determined by the voting members of the audience. Best Film: Hedgehog, a French film. First runner-up was Mao’s Last Dancer, followed

by Micmacs, then Cell 211, Hipsters, and rounding out the top 5 was The Concert For Best Documentary there was a tie between the profile of Seattle artist Ginny Ruffner: A Not So Still Life and Wasteland.

In the category of documentary films, both of this critic’s choices for the best of SIFF happen to be films of LGBT interest: 8: The Mormon Proposition, a must-see investigative documentary that profiles the conspiracy of the Mormon Church hierarchy to organize and fund ballot propositions to roll back same sex partnership rights; and The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls, which has audience members humming their songs for days afterwards.

Both are absolutely outstanding documentary works.

Rounding out the worst of the worst (this year’s SIFF had very few awful films, the least bombs in recent memory) the second runner-up was Father’s Acre, where seldom was any line of dialog followed by a response in less than 30 seconds. Even the long repetitive close-ups of the strikingly handsome actor couldn’t salvage this bomb. First runner-up was How Sex Sold Hollywood, which was actually a very poorly organized lecture with a few relevant unique film clips by a local university professor. The worst of the worst was The Wild Hunt, a live action role play film which completely bombed out at the bottom to take the prize as a complete waste of celluloid.
