Eric Andrews-Katz: What is the first memory that stands out from being cast as an original Jet in West Side Story?

Martin Charnin: The memory precedes being cast, and that was having the guts to do it without any prior information of the show. I saw an article in the New York Times saying that Jerome Robbins was having open calls for “authentic juvenile delinquents,” who could sing, dance, and act. The auditions were that day, so I went.

Currently, Mr. Charnin lives with his wife (Broadway Nine actress Shelly Burch) in Issaquah and has been named artistic director of Seattle’s own Showtunes theater company. At a quaint coffeehouse in Issaquah, Mr. Charnin gave the SGN an interview about his life, his work and future productions.

There is no question about it: RuPaul’s Drag Race is all the rage. There is also no question that Julia’s on Broadway has been successful in showcasing the fan favorites from the show. The incomparable Shannel headlines Seattle’s best female impersonation show, Le Faux, with RuPaul’s Drag Race season 1 favorite Ongina stopping by to wow audiences. Now that RuPaul’s Drag Race’s second season is complete, Julia’s has booked Raven to perform at the Capitol Hill Pride Festival on June 26.

In addition, Raven will guest star in the June 26 production of Le Faux alongside another season two Drag Race alum, Morgan McMichaels.

Seattle Gay News checked in with Raven to talk drag, Gay Pride, and what it was like to be a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Toy Story 3 a timeless adventure

by Sara Michelle Fetters SGN Contributing Writer Toy Story 3 Opening June 18 I think we’ve all had that one toy we can never forget. For me, it was a stuffed bear unoriginally named “Teddy.” I adored the teeny-weeny bundle of brown fluff, and even though as the years went by he came to be missing an eye and was sporting more than his share of needle and thread scars, thanks to my Mom’s quick-fix patching, I kept and cherished that little animal for more years than I care to count.

With the sensational Toy Story 3, Pixar has done the impossible.

Not only have they crafted a tale (thanks in large part to Little Miss Sunshine scribe Michael Arndt) that’s every bit as everlasting as the two previous motion pictures, they’ve woven a parable about youth, young adulthood, and aging that’s spectacular. These characters, this story, has matured at arguably the same rate as each installment has hit theatres, and the level of insight to be found borders on breathtaking.

As things begin, Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Buzz (voiced by Tim Allen), and the gang are facing an uncertain future.

Their owner, Andy (voiced by John Morris), is days away from leaving for college, and whether or not he’s going to be taking any of his remaining toys along with him or put them into storage in the attic is still uncertain.

From there starts an adventure that goes from daycare to the playground, from the heat of a furnace to the warmth of a child’s bedroom, and each of our heroes goes on a journey that takes them from the brink of an unspeakable ending back to the bright potential of a new beginning. More than that, they make it together, learning once and for all that family can be made out of choice and isn’t always based on which manufacturer you were mass-produced by.

Just on a surface level, Pixar and director Lee Unkrich (Finding Nemo, Toy Story 2) get so much right there’s almost nothing for me to point out negatively. New characters like Ken (voiced by Michael Keaton) and a big pink teddy bear named Lotso (voiced by Ned Beatty) are fine additions to the series,

while the central The Great Escape narrative is positively thrilling for both young and old alike. The old characters continue to evolve, grow, and change, their relationships with one another every bit as electric, complex and intricate as those of any flesh and blood human being.

But Arndt’s script digs even deeper than that. Sure it’s fun and at times frivolous, featuring moments of outright silliness, but it is also an emotional maelstrom for toy and owner alike. While Andy has always been sort of an enigmatic figure in the previous two chapters of this tale, here his wants and needs are as important as those of the toys he owns. His decisions are as key as theirs, and the film’s penultimate moments combine one with the other in a way that is both delightfully surreal and touchingly poignant.

Sure, there are some magnificently animated set pieces – like the group’s attempts to escape from a garbage dump incinerator or Woody’s first glimpses of a little girl’s toy-filled bedroom – but at this point, as far as Pixar is concerned, those are to be

expected. What wasn’t expected is that the studio could elevate the sequel to such great heights, and while films like The Incredibles, Up, Ratatouille and WALL•E have already set an absurdly lofty bar, the fact Pixar gets there once again by returning to a cast of characters who started this CG animated love fest in the first place is still something of a surprise.

The biggest glory of Toy Story 3 is how it made me feel when all was said and done.

Not only do the filmmakers bring things full circle, they do it in a way that is so completely satisfying it’s ridiculous not to come away impressed. The film brought honestly earned tears to my eyes, and the finale is so warm and wonderful that it might just be the year’s most endearing moment.

More than that, though, Pixar and company made me remember what it was like to be a kid and to hold my own toys with the same all-encompassing unconditional love that Andy shares with his. They made me recollect on what it was like to let go of my youth and pass into adulthood, got me to embrace who I was as a child, and how those youthful decisions led me to where I am today. Toy Story 3 is as timeless as it is timely, and for kids of all ages and for the adults who still remember what it was to be young, this is one movie, one sequel, everyone is bound to adore.

Ondine will have you believing in fairytales Magnolia Pictures

sea and on the land and she struggles against falling in love with the fisherman who may or may not be her salvation. I wish I could write more, but that would spoil things.

The cinematography by Christopher Doyle is lovely and captures the fairytale beauty of the Irish coast nicely. The images become part of the storytelling. Doyle also shot Paranoid Park (perhaps Gus Van Sant’s most underrated film) and Rab-

bit Proof Fence along with a slew of flicks made in Hong Kong. This is great work by a photog who rarely gets much praise.

Ondine is pure movie magic. The story is excellent and keeps you guessing until the end. In typical Neil Jordan fashion, the last act takes a wild (and totally satisfying) turn.

It doesn’t matter how old you get, it’s always fun to believe even if only for a couple of hours in a darkened theater.

by Scott Rice SGN Contributing Writer Ondine Opening June 18 Fairytales can be unsettling. They can also be magical. Often they’re both. Neil Jordan’s new film Ondine is a modern-day telling of the water nymph myth, and it definitely falls into the latter category: It’s quite magical, and more than a little unsettling.

Syracuse (Colin Farrell) is an Irish fisherman with a bad nickname, a sickly daughter named Annie (Alison Barry), an abusive, alcoholic ex-wife, and a drinking problem of his own that teeters on the edge of recovery every day.

For Syracuse, the fishing is marginal and life is a lonely grind until the day he pulls his nets in to find a beautiful woman who goes by the name Ondine (Alicja Bachleda). Annie believes Ondine is a selkie, a mythologi-

cal shape-shifter who can become human by removing her seal coat. While Syracuse isn’t sure what to think, he does fall madly in love with his catch, and when a man’s in love, anything seems possible.

Farrell, as usual, is perfect as the downtrodden everyman – though a gorgeous downtrodden everyman – trying to stay sober and make a living. He’d also like to get the townsfolk to quit calling him Circus, a nickname he earned during his drunk years.

Farrell works the character expertly as Syracuse begins to allow himself to believe in all kinds of things. Maybe Ondine is a mermaid or a selkie. Maybe when she sings he catches more fish. Maybe she can cure Annie’s kidney failure. Farrell is so good that as Syracuse begins to believe, so do we.

Bachleda earns high praise as the beautiful something-or-other seemingly coughed up by the sea. Her accent is familiar, yet you can’t peg it. She is perfectly at home in the

choices are individual ones, but they are not easy choices.

Peter Crook portrays the determined Dr. Larch with warmth and restraint. His bewildered affection for Homer is clear and understandable. Connor Toms is a revelation as young Homer; his emotional transitions seen in his expressive face. He also brings a sense of honor and self-confidence into the journey. Melinda Deane and Julie Jamieson subtly warm up the orphanage nurses with humor and compassion. Another standout in the excellent cast is Terri Weagant who plays angry orphan girl Melony, who seems to have collected all the anger and bad feelings that Homer doesn’t have in a similar circumstance. Weagant brings an explosive, awkward sexuality to the role that speaks of a complex inner life.

Onstage musicians, including main musician Eric Chappelle, provide original compositions by Danny Wheetman, music directed by Edd Key. Since there is no real set aside from a couple of walls with doors, music and lighting by Andrew D. Smith provide crucial scene change information and time-of-day clarity. Costume designer Pete Rush has his hands full as men and women do quick changes, men into boys or girls, women into girls or boys, and each actor has multiple characters to play.

Consider this one of the best productions of the year and a must-see. You will have a few opportunities in the fall to see Part 1 during the run of Part 2 (woe to the poor actors who have to remember both plays at once), but there’s no reason to hold off. The Cider House Rules, Part 1: Here in St. Cloud’s Book-It Repertory Theatre Through July 11 Twenty years ago, The Cider House Rules adaptation propelled Book-It Repertory from doing short stories and articles into adapting full-length novels. Though many of the founders and creators of Book-It were involved in that production, it was actually produced at Seattle Repertory Theatre. After workshops around the country, it has become the most frequently done adaptation they’ve ever helped create. We now have an opportunity to revisit the script with Part 1 now, while Part 2 opens their next season in the fall.

This sprawling tale, brilliantly adapted

by Peter Parnell from John Irving’s novel, details the story of Homer Wells, an orphan who was never adopted and stays at St. Cloud’s orphanage in Maine until he becomes an adult. His father figure, Dr. Wilbur Larch, teaches him to help the doctor both deliver babies and perform abortions. Part 1 focuses on his birth, his failed adoptions, and his relationships with those in the orphanage. It ends just as he is going off on what is supposed to be a two-day adventure to the ocean.

The script is tight, the full cast is a welloiled ensemble – a standout production, helmed by Book-It founder Jane Jones. Even though it clocks in at around three hours, the time flies by with rich detail and interesting characters. The dilemmas addressed in the play are complex, addressing subjects that still create controversy to this day. Should a doctor perform abortions? Should abortions be objects of legal restriction? Celebrating 37 Years!

Oregon Shakespeare Festival opens with strong plays the festival has produced almost too many times over the years. Director Darko Tresnjak contributed some fresh ideas. One was having a dramatic change of color in the delightful costumes Linda Cho designed for Olivia and her court after she meets Cesario.

Having every character possible watch the gulling scene was interesting. Another was having Malvolio’s appearance in yellow stockings spread to his whole costume. A nice difference was that Sir Toby’s bottles get smaller through the play, and finally

Twelfth Night The first of the summer offerings was Twelfth Night. This had been chosen for the 75th anniversary season because it had been one of the first plays produced at OSF, all those years ago. It is also a play

disappear. We liked the fact that when Olivia reappears after saying she is going to change into women’s clothes, she is still dressed as Cesario. David Zinn’s set provided fun spaces for the athletic production.

Miriam Laube had wonderful big presence as Olivia. Brooke Parks in the cross-dressing role of Viola, though presenting a sweet demeanor, had trouble matching it. Kenajuan Bentley was pleasing as Orsino. Michael J. Hume and Robin Goodrin Nordli were well-matched as Sir Toby and Maria. Christoper Liam Moore took Malvolio through his paces well. Michael Elich stole the show as Feste.

She Loves Me Also new on the stage at OSF is the musical She Loves Me. Rebecca Taichman’s direction of this flawless production makes the case for this rarely performed musical, by the same team that created Fiddler on the Roof. We found ourselves swept up in the music and lyrics by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. Lush costuming by Miranda Hoffman and a jewel-like set by Scott Bradley added effect.

Lisa McCormick and Mark Bedard acted and sang their hearts out as the leads.

Miriam Laube sparkled as the bad girl.

Michael Elich kept up with her as her love interest. Michael J. Hume was strong as the proprietor of the perfume shop they all work in. Dan Donahue contributed memorable moments as a waiter.

We liked the fact that there were two Lesbian couples in a café scene. A friend said that was a clever way to re-use the actresses playing the female customers.

Ruined When we went to Ashland for the summer opening, Lynn Nottage’s Ruined had joined the repertory. The playwright won a Pulitzer Prize for this play, and we could see why. It is a powerful story about women who have been raped and maimed as part of the war in the Congo. All parts of the conflict come through Mama Nadi’s bar. Liesl Tommy’s direction, Clint Ramos’ sets, Christal We a t h e r l y ’s costumes, and music by Broken Chord Collective took us there.

Kimberly Scott plays Mama. DawnLyen Gardener is convincing as a girl who needs to be taken in. Chinasa Ogbuagu breaks our heart as Salima, a young woman whose husband threw her out after she was raped.

Now she is a prostitute at Mama’s. Peter Macon is strong as the husband who appears at the bar, wanting her back. Victoria Ward’s performance as another prostitute is also persuasive.

Jimonn Cole and Kenajuan Bentley chill us as the leaders of the opposition.

Bill Rauch’s direction starts with the question from the trial scene – “Which is the merchant and which the Jew?” – to make the point that the two sides are indistinguishable. He puts Shylock’s house in a ghetto, which it would have been.

Rauch has Jessica, Shylock’s daughter, steal his Kiddush cup, along with his money and jewelry, so we can see his connection to his faith is also robbed. The director has Jessica experience more bigotry from Christians after her conversion. Jessica also lets us see that she realizes the wealth that comes to her at the end of the play is at the cost of her father’s destruction.

Rauch mixes contemporary and 16th century costumes and sets, to make the point, we suppose, that the issues are current.

We found it a bit confusing. We liked Portia sliding the caskets in the water.

Raven says she’s been a drag artist for a little over eight years. “I told myself I was going to do drag on a stage and not for Halloween,” said Raven. “Since then, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve performed.”

“Drag is an amazing form of art, and I am da Vinci,” she told SGN. “I truly have a wonderful time doing what I do.”

Raven told SGN that since appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race, the response from fans has been amazing. “On the show, one of the biggest things I wanted out of this was for the people who didn’t like my drag to see that I have what it takes to make it to the top,” she said. “Did I win? Not the cash or the title – but I did win those people over, so mission accomplished! Also, my fans are the shit. I love all of them.”

Raven said her fans can expect “an absolute sweetheart and a good time” at her June 26 Seattle debut.

“This Gay Pride, I want people to celebrate diversity and to love themselves,” Raven told SGN. “Be proud of who you are and any and everything you have accomplished.

Keep your dreams alive and live each day like it’s your last.”

“Look out, Seattle … here I come!” she continued. “Happy Pride, and I can’t wait to have a blast with all of you.”

continued from cover Andrews-Katz: When did you come up with the concept for the musical Annie?

Charnin: Christmas of 1969. I had a friend who was interested in pop culture. I went to buy a present for him and there was a book called The Life and Hard Times of Little Orphan Annie. It was a compilation of the 20-plus years of the comic strip. When I got home I started to leaf through it and became inspired. The strip was rich with language and humor along with a definite intellect at work with an artist. I started to realize what the strip didn’t cover was how the two of them (“Daddy” Warbucks and Annie) got together, and minus the accoutrement that made her an icon – i.e. the hair, the red dress, Sandy the dog – I was determined to treat the story as a three-dimensional character and to fill in all those gaps of what made her an icon.

Andrews-Katz: How did the theme song “Tomorrow” get written?

Charnin: Both of them [book author Thomas Meehan and composer Charles Strouse] hated the idea of the show when I first presented it. I convinced them. It’s always important to me to have one musical number in a show that defines the lead character’s total point of view. I think that “Tomorrow” translates into what the show is about. The extent of Annie’s belief in herself and her fortitude is stated in the speech she gives Sandy. That develops into the attitude towards Annie’s life goals: “It may not be OK today, but tomorrow is around the corner.”

Andrews-Katz: What went wrong with the film version?

Charnin: The screen [1982] version was a major disaster and a gigantic mistake. We [the creative team] were seduced by the extreme, excessive amount of money offered for the rights. Originally there was a different producer who was aligned with what we wanted, but he got the boot from Columbia Pictures. Ray Stark inherited the movie and made it clear that he was doing it for the money. He restored Punjab and The Asp characters. All he asked Albert Finney [Warbucks] to do was yell. It’s one of the loudest performances in screen history. He chose to make Mrs. Hannigan [Carol Burnett] a drunk because he thought it was funny.

Originally we avoided it because we thought it was the wrong kind of villain. In the original, she was a woman trapped by her life and circumstances. But Burnett’s character was looped for most of the picture.

Andrews-Katz: So you think the [1999] Disney television remake was much, much, much better?

Charnin: You said three “much,” and that might be too many. In comparison, it was better, but…. They wanted to give Kathy Bates [Mrs. Hannigan] more in the second half. I find it ludicrous that Annie spent 11 and a half years with Mrs. Hannigan and we [the audience] are asked not to recognize her just because she is wearing a hat and glasses. They also [like its predecessor] cut out the sentiment.

Andrews-Katz: Annie is scheduled to come back to Broadway in 2012. What changes were made from the original in 1977?

Charnin: It’s not necessarily true – a lot can happen in 18 months. It’s not going to be revised and people are using that word taking it to mean that the “classic” Annie is going to be changed. It can’t be; it’s too iconic. At this point, I have no idea what will happen. [Thomas Meehan and I] are supposed to have a meeting in a few weeks.

There may be a change here or there by moving a scene to another location, but it’s not going to be revised in the sense of “reworked.” Those that saw it originally can go with the security of knowledge that when they take the second and third generations, they will be in love with it again, like when they originally saw it.

Andrews-Katz: How do you feel about the parodies on your work?

Charnin: I love them. I encourage them.

They are funny, but I think the point is if a parody is on-target and true, then it can’t harm what it’s making fun of. The target is stronger than the parody of it.

Andrews-Katz: What is your strongest memory working with Richard Rodgers?

Charnin: I think everybody tried to scare me to death about working with Dick, but I found him pleasant and professional. I only suffered the unfortunate fact that he was ill the two times I did work with him [I Remember Mama, Two by Two]. Being ill deprived him of a kind of power and strength that he had previously asserted throughout his professional career, and it affected both musicals. I still believe that Two by Two is one of the greatest undiscovered scores of the 20th century.

Andrews-Katz: For the 1970 musical Two by Two you worked with Madeline Kahn and Danny Kaye. What was it like to work with two such comedic performers?

Charnin: Madeline was a piece of cake, a delight. Danny Kaye was the kind of comedic entertainer of an age that isn’t found easily. He was ideal. The best thing about the show was casting Danny Kaye in the Noah part. It was also the worst thing because he hadn’t been on Broadway in over 25 years.

He wanted all the jokes and ended up not trusting the part.

Andrews-Katz: When did you come to the Pacific Northwest and what brought you out here?

Charnin: Five years ago, I came to do a musical at The Village Theatre. By luck, it turned out my wife and family liked it out here, and we decided to relocate.

Andrews-Katz: How did you get involved with the Showtunes Theater Company?

Charnin: Maggie Stenson Pehrson [Showtunes’ executive producer] and I became friendly and I loved their work. I saw a lot of things they did in 2005-2007 and she asked if I wanted to do a musical with the company. I did two when they were still at Kirkland Performance Center and then I was simply asked to become artistic director.

Andrews-Katz: What responsibilities come with that title?

Charnin: It gives me a chance to dig into trunks and find productions that deserve to have the public be reminded of them. In the world, not every show is a Spring Awakening or American Idiot. The great classic musicals that aren’t revived often have merit and great songs. It’s not so much to rediscover them, but history is not a bad thing, and that something is new doesn’t make it the best. Our goal is not to neglect the past.

Martin Charnin’s body of work is a long list of theatrical history. Aside from being the original Jet, Big Deal, he has written lyrics for over six Broadway musicals and has directed eight Broadway shows. In 1977, Annie brought him three Tony Award nominations and one win for Best Original Score.

Showtunes Theater Company found a permanent home at Seattle’s Moore Theater as of last year and just completed Sondheim’s Follies. Staging concert versions of classic musicals, their next production will be the Irving Berlin musical Call Me Madam starting on September 25. The musical is a satire on politics, foreign affairs and American policies on lending money. Songs include, “The Best Thing for You (Would Be Me),” “The Money Song” and the Berlin standard, “The Hostess With the Mostes’ on the Ball.”

Each Friday, the very beautiful Penelope hosts the show and, according to Polo, special guests will drop in to perform. “Penelope is amazing,” Polo told SGN, “and we are going to have go-go boys in the near future.

Neighbours Seattle has a long history with the LGBT Latino community. On Sunday nights, the nightclub hosts Noche Latina with Entre Hermanos. Also, one Friday a month, Caliente with Efren Chacon is held in the Neighbours Underground.

Neighbours Underground is the perfect venue for Club Chulo. If you haven’t been down there in a while, you won’t recognize it. It has been remodeled for a bigger dance floor and the décor has been greatly improved. The space is intimate and a great setting to dance the night away to hot Latin beats and top 40, too.

If there has been one contestant throughout the competition who stood out in appearance, it would be contestant number one, Danica D’Lish. Dressed in a punk-pop ‘80s-style getup, Danica performed “The Warrior” by Scandal. Danica will not move on to the Finals round, but has given some of the most fun performances in Pride Idol history. Great job, girl!

When Josh Vegas first stepped onto the Pride Idol stage during the preliminaries, he was an instant fan favorite. Josh returned to sing “Smooth” by Rob Thomas and, once

again, the audience was on his side. Josh has the natural ability (and good looks) to really perform a song and has a great time doing it. Josh will also not move on to the Finals round, but we thank him for the memories.

Contestant number three, Michael, returned from last week’s win to sing and dance to Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out For a Hero.” Michael has got a voice, there’s no denying that, but I don’t think anyone would disagree with the assessment that the best part of his Wildcard performance was the self-described ‘80s dance break during the instrumental of the song. Oh, Michael, thank you for the Gayness and all the laughs!

Gaysha Starr is one of Seattle’s legendary drag queens. Whether she is helping raise money for a local nonprofit or hosting an event, she does it with 18 years of drag art behind her. So, it’s easy to see why the crowd was so receptive to her energetic performance of Ike and Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary.” With performances like that, it really is easy to see that Gaysha truly is a star!

Contestant number four, Karolina, brought soul to Sunday night. Flawlessly singing Sinead O’Conner’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” Karolina brought the mood down, but the competition up as she got a minuteslong cheering ovation at the conclusion of the song.

Contestant number five, Chase Silva, is like the little Pride Idol that could. Chase decided a long time ago that he was going to make it into the Finals come hell or high water – and on Sunday, he did just that.

Singing Whitney Houston’s “My Love is Your Love,” he earned first runner-up and a chance to wow us all next week. Good for you, Chase!

Singing one of my favorite songs, “Get Here,” contestant number six, Clayton Coleman, gave a wonderful and soulful performance. Clayton is handsome, talented, and gave a good effort. Although he will not be moving on to the Finals round, I have to say that if given a chance, I would listen to Clayton sing anytime.

Donta Rogers, the last final contestant of the Wildcard Round, also sang “Smooth.”

Rather than imitating the sound and style of Rob Thomas, Donta performed his own version of the hit and held the audience’s attention from beginning to end. But Donta won second runner-up, so he will not be advancing to the Finals next week.

Closing the show with a raunchy and fun version of Jackie Beat’s “Baby Got Front,” Eva Androgeny had the crowd cheering and throwing dollars like they were at a Jackie Beat show! Eva Androgeny is always a pleasure to watch – great energy, great hair, and fierce makeup!

At the end of the night, when all the judges’ score sheets were tallied and the Verizon Wireless text votes were counted, contestant number four, Karolina, was named the winner of the Wildcard Round and got the chance to perform at next week’s show: the 2010 Seattle Out and Proud Seattle’s Pride Idol Finale.

The time has come. This Sunday, June 20, Seattle will pick its next Pride Idol. This is a red carpet event, folks. Dress to impress, shock, come in drag, don your Pride gear – let’s make this a night to remember! See you at 8 p.m., ready to rock!

Richard Gray, Gay songwriter and quadruple threat

Composing didn’t come right away. “I didn’t [compose] anything until around ‘85 in college as a director, and I was looking for the right song and couldn’t find it and decided, ‘Oh, I’ll just write one.’ Then I

“We’re legally married in California. We got married in Napa right before Prop 8.

Registered here. We’ve done all we can. We keep threatening going from state to state. It just means our friends have to keep buying us gifts. We had a commitment ceremony in ‘98. We had our first date on the 16th of September, our commitment ceremony was on the 20th of September and our Napa wedding was the 17th. We basically have an anniversary week, which works great. In theater, the Monday night I have off is our anniversary celebration. We celebrate a lot on Mondays – that’s our Saturday night.”

Aside from Gray’s participation in many musicals with the top theaters – including 5th Avenue, Village, and Showtunes – he has written several whole musicals. In 2005 and 2006, he was a finalist in the brand new Fred Ebb Awards for emerging musical theater composers or teams of lyricist/composers. “I cowrote the score for Little Rock at the Seattle Children’s Theatre (1995) and Time Again in Oz (2000). I wrote a musical version of Cold Turkey, the Norman Lear movie. That’s stalled right now because of rights issues.”

Gray also composed Love Is Love with Tony-winner Martin Charnin, and used to write songs for what he calls “mini musicals” for the cabaret shows at Crepe De Paris.

More recently, Gray had an epiphany. “I decided I’m going to think about my career as Seattle-based, but bigger. I have a manager in New York who handles me as a songwriter, so I had to think outside of our little community.

It was a great turning point for me, and my songwriting got better, too. If I’m going to put myself on the national map, I’m going to step up my game.”

One of Gray’s current projects is a new musical for this Christmas season for Seattle Children’s Theatre, Lyle the Crocodile, with Kevin Kling, who’s writing the script. “[The characters] go skating at Rockefeller center and look at Macy’s windows, and see the Rockettes.” Gray is also writing a musical with playwright Jordan Harrison, whose plays Act a Lady and Kid Simple were performed in Seattle last year, called The Flea and the Professor, based on the last story that Hans Christian Anderson wrote. It will perform at the Arden Theater in Philadelphia.

In relation to Pride week, Gray acknowledges that his relationship with Ernie is often seen as a model for younger Gay friends.

“We definitely feel a responsibility. We have a lot of young Gay friends who are single or in couples that look up to us as the ideal.

Not everybody has to be married like we are, but they want that. They want to have a life partner and they see our relationship as something that really works. It’s kind of like Gay mentoring. Letting people know that you don’t need to [stress about it]; there can be an ease, a comfortableness.”
