If superyacht sales are blooming, superyacht orders are booming – the monthly tally is three times what it was over the same period last year. In addition to a continuing reduction in the number of superyachts newly for sale, the figures paint a picture of a market returning to health.

A STEADY CLIMB Twenty-six superyacht sales were reported in February, up nine from January’s figure and on a par with 25 in February 2013. In fact, February figures have steadily improved since 2009, when the tally was just three. The largest sale this year was that of the 88m, 2013 Lürssen motor yacht QUATTROELLE, followed by Dutch yard ICON Yachts’ first build: the 62m, 2010 motor yacht ICON (asking price of EUR 45,000,000). Claiming the third title for asking price was 59.70m motor yacht ULYSSES, built by US yard Trinity Yachts in 2006 – one of five of this month’s sales that were American-built. LESS IS MORE We know of 22 superyachts that came to the market in February – a significant drop on January’s 32 and several fewer than the 39 recorded in February 2013, 38 in February 2012 and 44 in February 2011. The largest on offer this February was 76m 1999 Amels motor yacht REBORN – extensively altered and refitted by Amico in 2010 (asking price EUR 65,000,000). The 52.12m GRAVITAS, built by Feadship in 1995, is asking USD 23,500,000 and the larger of the only two sailing yachts new for sale is the 31.60m, 1994 CNB, VICTORIA D (asking price EUR 4,500,000). FANATICAL ABOUT FEADSHIP There have been 10 Feadship sales in the last year, the most recent being the 50m, 1998, IROQUOIS (asking USD 19,500,000) and the 51.80m, 2003, DREAM (asking USD 32,900,000) in December. There are currently 49 Feadships on the market – ranging from the 25m ATLANTA built in 1958 to the 85.95m ECSTASEA built in 2004 (asking EUR 77,777,777). In my opinion, those of particular significance are the 55.50m ISSANA (the best priced per ton of her size and age on the market), the 75.75m OCEAN VICTORY (the most expensive at EUR 120,000,000) and the 85.95m ECSTASEA (the largest and – with an impressive maximum speed of 30 knots – very much the fastest).

When considering the perfect gift for the owner of MADAME GU, Chris Cecil Wright turned to one of Britain’s last traditional silversmiths: Edward Fraser Ltd. The commission was born out of a friendship forged 35 years ago.

Chris first met Warwick Gück, owner of Edward Fraser Ltd, at prep school; later they served together in the 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards before Warwick went on to build an elite silversmith and jewellery business. When the idea of a silver model of MADAME GU was mooted, Chris knew he could trust in the talents of Warwick’s team. It took almost 3000 hours to create the 28-inch replica Feadship. PRECISION POINT ‘I’ve collected many of Warwick’s silver pieces over the years – cutlery, coasters and candlesticks – but this is an astonishing piece of yacht jewellery,’ says Chris of the model. Previously, the men had designed an intricate handmade goblet together for a mutual friend for whom Chris was best man. The results were magnificent: ‘I realized that Warwick and I definitely share a passion for detail.’ REIGN OR SHINE One of several generations of his family to manufacture silverware, Warwick’s core client has been the British Army. In addition to commemorating honorable soldiers and historic events, his precious silver ornaments have been gifted to both the Prince of Wales and the King of Jordan. ‘The MADAME GU model is one of the best objects we’ve made,’ Warwick admits, ‘It was entirely hand raised – from the flag and spiral staircase to the gold-plated teak decking – and to deliver it was wonderful.’ The gift was clearly a success: it resides as the dining table centerpiece aboard the original MADAME GU.

At Andrew Winch Design, numbers speak volumes: over the company’s 27 year history, 56 super yachts have been delivered and 30 prestigious awards have been won. A close-knit collective of over 50 designers and experts – with one exceptional creative at the helm – this British studio is simply in a league of it’s own. TAILOR MADE CYCLOS III, PHOENIX2, AL MIRQAB… each of these renowned yachts is utterly characteristic of its owner, and each of these bear the anonymous signature of Andrew Winch Design. Chris Cecil-Wright and Andrew Winch first collaborated professionally in 2004 on the Feadship GU for a particularly discerning first-time yacht owner. Such was its success that the owner commissioned them to conceive his next yacht, MADAME GU – the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands, a 2014 ShowBoats Design Award double winner and (at time of writing) a 2014 World Superyachts Award finalist. ‘Believing in the impossible’ is how Andrew describes the challenge of creating this ‘majestic thoroughbred’. Everything was custom built, from the helicopter to the glassware and linen, with a focus and finesse typical of Andrew Winch: ‘Every corner was considered three dimensionally’ says the designer, who instructed a full-scale mock-up of the party deck at Pinewood Studios for the client’s perusal. BuILDING ThE DREAM With all the expertise required to take a yacht, private aircraft or residence from sketch to fruition, the studio is fully capable of breathing life into their client’s aspirations. Andrew tells of how owners find it hard to be parted from their completed yacht or aircraft, adding ‘You know you’ve done a good job when they feel completely at home’. Fundamental to Andrew’s continued success is what he considers a vital trinity of trust, respect and an understanding of the client’s lifestyle. The frequent accolades – the 62m Feadship SEA OWL was also a 2014 ShowBoats Design Award winner for it’s tender – are a happy consequence of the studio’s creative collaboration with the client.

ON SOLID GROuND Encouraged by their clients, in 2007 Andrew Winch Design broadened to include residential architecture and interiors. The owner of MADAME GU, for example, commissioned property design in both the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean, while current projects at AWD include a private chateau in France and an Alpine ski chalet. In this capacity, Andrew has turned his attention to the new Cecil-Wright London office in St James’s: ‘It’s a very simple, cultured, bohemian space – classic yet contemporary with eclectic art,’ says Andrew of the apartment to which clients are invited, ‘Chris is living the life of his work, so it’s a home to work from – and a private environment to put clients at ease’. Andrew Winch’s personal surroundings are as aesthetically diverse as his studio’s portfolio: a ‘monastically relaxed’ farmhouse in Surrey built in 1580, a casual ski chalet in the Alps, a London pied-à-terre with minimalist Japanese flair and a ‘modern marine’ office in Barnes. The designer finds his creativity inspired by water: ‘I can see the waves of the River Thames from my office desk. I do love the water and would like a yacht of my own. The ambition of tomorrow is to spend more time afloat – after all, you don’t just buy a yacht, you buy a lifestyle’.

SUPERYACHTAUDIT Yachts are bigger, more complex and more valuable than ever. Larger crews, bigger budgets and supercharged atmospheres require skilled leadership and highly trained staff if they are to meet and surpass the Owner’s ever increasing expectations. Competence assessments and qualifications of the Senior Crew are well regulated and based on sound maritime principles. However we have not yet seen a coherent approach to managing the “whole system” from leadership principles to silver service. I caught up with Christopher Newman and Manley Hopkinson of Arbelas Maritime in Cannes recently and asked them about their timely and innovative “Superyacht Audit” designed to provide just that.

Chris Cecil-Wright (CCW): So Chris, Manley exactly what is your "Superyacht Audit"? Manley Hopkinson (MH): Hi Chris, essentially, it’s a “bilge to bridge” deep dive into all aspects of superyacht operations, culture and performance. It is a “fact finding mission” designed to reveal specific development needs so the Senior Crew and Management can focus their development efforts and dollars for maximum gain. We have a unique team that collectively are global leaders in leadership, team development, operations and crucially, security. CCW: Hmm, security? There is a lot of talk about security and a pretty crowded market too. Tell me more

about the security aspect of your audit? What makes it unique? Christopher Newman (CN): Chris, you are totally right – the market is saturated but with security companies providing risk management and training services that are not necessarily required or of the right standard. We are world renowned experts in the fields of Anti-piracy and Protection, Executive and Close Protection requirement, Crisis and Emergency planning, Cyber Security counter measures, conflict management, all first aid courses (inc AED & Oxygen Therapy) and Technical Surveillance Counter Measures (TSCM), and that’s what we will assess and report on.

CCW: Thanks Chris. That really is a unique and effective approach. Manley, you spoke about “leadership” being a real development need in the industry; how’s that? MH: It’s absolutely key. It is all about people. A superyacht crew is big! A team of diverse people, each with their individual motivation, characteristics, attitude, expectations, experiences and needs. Some are fresh out of college, others seasoned mariners. Some technically trained and focused, others deliver the service aspect of superyacht operations. Effort spent in tapping into the “collective brilliance” massively improves safety, security, performance and efficiency – it’s a win all round. CCW: Unlocking the potential of the crews to deliver the 7* service they need to. Of course. Superb. That would be an incredibly valuable insight for any Captain and Owner to have. So what experience in the Superyacht industry do you have?

CN: Plenty, but, given that many superyachts effectively operate as businesses, it makes sense to consider how successful businesses approach the issues of staff recruitment, development, teamwork and morale, and bring some of those practices into the superyacht industry. Essentially bringing best practice from across the globe to create similar levels of professionalism in the superyacht industry. CCW: Manley, so how would the superyacht industry benefit from an independent auditor? MH: There are a number of different stakeholders that would benefit from an independent assessment including Insurers, Banks, Owners and the yacht Captains. This will give them the confidence that their procedures, systems and teams are working at optimum performance. Being independent gives us the ability to operate with high integrity with fresh eyes and an exclusive focus on best practice.

CCW: So how would a superyacht engage with you? CN: Get in contact and let’s meet face to face, old style. We are cognisant that each superyacht will have its own unique program of events and limitations on availability and we will ensure our impact on their operational requirements is minimised. We will sit with the superyacht “management team” or owner and together, we will develop the “Superyacht Audit Program”. CCW: Thanks chaps. Captain Ben Marshall and his crew are in the minority these days; not many are willing to undertake the risky passage down the horn of Africa and the Somali coastline to the Seychelles, but he and his team are well prepared to risk it for what’s waiting at the other end. Greeted by Ben at Mahé’s “toy town” airport, we stopped at the nearby Banyan Tree Resort for a 90-minute “flight recovery” massage overlooking what is surely the most beautiful beach on earth. Before heading to RED DRAGON we had dinner at Takamaka – a restaurant set next to an old rum distillery where they serve fruit bat ravioli (as well as other more conventional creole fare, thankfully).

The winding journey to the harbour is idyllic. Mahé is dominated by lush, Jurassic peaks covered with giant ferns, flowering trees and smooth granite rocks. It may look landscaped, but this is all Mother Nature’s creation. The Seychellois do their bit; the roads are flanked by neat, tropical gardens and there’s not a scrap of rubbish in sight. Nature’s presence is so strong: giant fruit bats flap from tree to tree and the hills reverberate with the whooping and cackling of rare birds, even here, close to the island’s tiny capital. How lovely to arrive at a destination which exceeds expectations.


Arriving at dusk into Mahé’s smart new superyacht marina, the eye is drawn straight to the twinkling light atop an awesome 63-metre mast. Below it sits “The Dragon”, and approaching from the pontoon, underwater lighting sets off her sleek, dark, 52-metre hull. This is all most people will ever get to see – around the Seychelles she has acquired superstar status. With her Alloy/ Dubois pedigree and having been kept in a state of perfection by her Anglo-Kiwi crew, even to the critical eye of a yachtbroker she is a beauty. Ben explained that the islands are divided into the “inner” and “outer” islands; some are mountainous and lush, others flat and sandy, and every one of them scattered with beaches. The sand only comes in white in these parts. The cruising distances are ideal; a couple of hours and you’re somewhere new. With so many islands uninhabited, and in the absence of any cruise ships, you’ve got the place pretty much to yourself. On a one or two week charter you could make it to the northernmost landfall of the African Banks, two sandy outcrops – one of the remotest, most beautiful spots on earth. Ben is a dive instructor and was keen to show us the best drop offs and reefs, and what lives there. Most of the deck crew also dive, so a couple of them joined us. When a large nurse shark came too close they immediately put themselves between it and the anxious guests and with a gentle prod it disappeared into the blue. As a broker, it’s reassuring to know that this crew even look after their guests impeccably and instinctively at 20 metres underwater. The crew’s enthusiasm for the surroundings is infectious; they’re determined to eek as much as possible out of every day, and don’t waste any time. Whale watching can be disappointing, but when Ben announced “We should see some whales around here…”, a pair of sperm whales followed by a pod of pilot whales appeared as if on cue. It quickly turned into whale-chasing, the DRAGON heeling right over as Ben criss-crossed the ocean, determined to give us a closer look.

Bird Island is one of the low-lying coralline islands, fringed by a steep stretch of white sand and frothing surf – and the crew still managed a seamless transfer to shore. The island is inhabited by an astonishing array of wild birds and giant tortoises – incumbent “Esmeralda” has lived here since 1771. This is a good place to spend the day if you’re feeling burnt out – reassuringly there’s no WiFi! Robbie, the local bird fanatic (part surf dude, part David Attenborough) showed us around. With no natural predators, tiny fluffy chicks are left by their mothers in ground-level nests and show no fear of humans. There’s no need for binoculars, or traipsing through the jungle; in fact you have to tread carefully to avoid trampling the nests, and keep your head down as rare and weird birds swoop at top speed. At the right time (MarchMay), visitors can help escort precious hatchling turtles to the sea, and will be told to stab the blue crabs with sticks to increase the turtles’ chances. Back onboard The Dragon, the fishing line is out and it’s not long before we have a bite. Not a biggie, but enough tuna to feed six guests at lunch. Morgan, The Dragon’s Kiwi chef, turns this humble offering into five different types of sushi, then pops up from the galley and says, “Shall I keep going?!”. With his 3-star Michelin training he seems to effortlessly turn out course after course of exquisite food; each dish a classic with a subtle Morgan twist. At breakfast the stewardess asks “What type of toast would you like?”. I think I counted five different types of freshly baked bread. The crew were fantastic with the 7 year old boy who came along; piggy backs, hide and seek, rugby on the beach and a gun fight on deck with huge water pistols. Yachtbrokers are often preoccupied with specification, layout, interior design; on this trip, it was clear that it’s the crew that make it. The combination of this yacht, with this crew, in this destination is unbeatable.

Having brokered the deal, I was able to admire his creative process at close quarters. When Andrew suggested his team design the interiors of our offices in London, it was a huge compliment from someone widely considered the yacht designer of the decade. FULLY DEDICATED Our offices in St James’s are chic and intimate – ideal for a small, bespoke company. We use technology, not a raft of secretaries: Icon Connect has implemented our yacht audiovisual systems so that we can view the Cecil Wright analytical software with our clients one-on-one. It’s a frank discussion with a cup of coffee or a flute of champagne, followed by a superb lunch nearby. MARKET RESPONSE Despite having only just launched, our company ethos is already making waves in the market – we’ve recently been appointed the central agent for SALPERTON, RED DRAGON and ENCHANTRESS. To be entrusted by the owners to charter their yachts is a great vindication of our efforts so far.

Renaissance Woman A dedicated yachtswoman and trained naval architect, Sarah Fraser recently joined Cecil Wright to assist charter clients – and has enhanced the business with her specialist expertise.

Every member of the Cecil Wright team has a passion for the industry, but few charter brokers can claim to be a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, a Commercially Endorsed Yacht Master and to have competed in the Round Britain Powerboat Race in a 10m RIB. ‘I’m on the water several times a week in the summer – whether it be in a 14ft dinghy race or a superyacht regatta.’ Explains Sarah, who’s first brush with maritime adventure was at two months old when she was baptized aboard a naval destroyer. VALUABLE ASSET Chris and Sarah have worked together previously for six years. When Chris was carefully considering a new addition to the Mayfair office, Sarah was a natural choice: ‘We’re a small team focused on relationships, and with Sarah’s 30 years of career experience, she’s a safe pair of hands,’ says Chris, adding: ‘She’s also a friend and very good fun’. Having worked at premier

brokerages in the past, Sarah developed a reputation for understanding clients’ needs. Furthermore, her technical knowledge of construction has resulted in a mutual respect between her, the owners, the captains and crew. NATURAL WONDER Large sailing yachts are a particular enthusiasm for Sarah, ‘It differs enormously from a motor yacht holiday – not in terms of comfort or service, but it puts the wind in your hair and connects you with the sea in the most dramatic way’. One of Sarah’s favourite sailing yachts is Salperton, a 45m fast cruising sloop that she has regularly chartered for clients over the years, ‘She’s striking – there’s a lovely flow from outside to inside, with masses of light,’ beams Sarah about the high performance beauty, ‘Salperton is available in French Polynesia this summer, so do catch her if you can’.
