WELCOME
Dear SMS Community,
On behalf of the Winter Ball Committee, we would like to welcome you to the 2023 SMS Winter Ball. We are so excited to be back –Together Again Under the Stars – this year!
Since its inception in 1972, SMS has established an outstanding record of producing exceptional student athletes. Our efforts and your generosity tonight honor this tradition. But most importantly, our combined efforts provide scholarships and opportunities to our students, giving them the ability to participate in our extraordinary academic and athletic environment.
The continuous support and encouragement for the Committee from the SMS parents, faculty, staff, coaches, and friends has been truly heartwarming. We could not have hoped for a more positive experience in the past few years of uncertain times.
The generosity of our community members and many businesses, both within Southern Vermont and outside of our local area, has made this event possible. We encourage you to bid high and bid often on the outstanding auction items, and also to pay it forward by showing these businesses your support throughout the year.
We would also like to thank the full Winter Ball Committee. We have enjoyed working with all of you and appreciated the collective spirit among the group to support our children and Stratton Mountain School.
Please join our SMS Winter Ball Committee members in indulging in this wonderful evening hosted by Stratton Mountain School, celebrating our amazing community.
We wish you all good health and look forward to celebrating tonight!
Sincerely,
Angela Kosinski, Beth Boyle and Kristine Koeppe

Welcome from the Head of School
Guests of the Winter Ball,
Welcome to the 54th Annual Stratton Mountain School Winter Ball. I am pleased to be here tonight to celebrate and support our amazing school.
Thank you to the many sponsors, donors, advertisers and volunteers who made this evening’s event possible. We would not be here without your loyal and dedicated support. With more than 50 percent of our student-athletes receiving financial aid, our Winter Ball is a crucial part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the dreams of SMS student athletes.
The Stratton Mountain School student experience is one filled with hard work, dedication, and tireless commitment. Our storied history includes tales of Olympic gold and national team placements. We also proudly celebrate the academic achievements of our students, and we are committed to educating the whole student. Stratton Mountain School provides an individually challenging experience that encourages personal growth and commitment to excellence. It is an honor to join my dedicated staff as we work together to support each student’s journey every day at SMS.

We take pride in our history of excellence in athletes, academics, and personal values; and we appreciate your participation in this pursuit. Thank you all for being here at Stratton Mountain School for tonight’s Winter Ball.

Regards,
Carson A. Thurber Head of School
Welcome from the board
Dear SMS Community,
On behalf of the Stratton Mountain School Board of Trustees, welcome to the 2023 Winter Ball.
We are happy to be able to gather again in person and bring back this treasured tradition of our annual Winter Ball, which celebrates and supports our entire SMS community. We are truly grateful for the generosity shown by the SMS community. Your support for this event helps create a more diverse environment where our talented student-athletes can thrive.
From our humble beginnings as a winter-term program with classes taught around dining room tables to our beautiful World Cup Circle campus, we have experienced incredible success over the past five decades. With more than 120 National Team placements, 75 Olympic placements, and acceptances to the nation’s top-tier colleges, we have much to be proud of throughout our 50-year history.
Thank you for being a part of it all. We couldn’t celebrate over a half-century without you.
Again, thank you for being a part of SMS’s success and demonstrating your support for our past, present, and future.

AS AN SMS ALUMNI I APPLAUD THE MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS

OF THE STRATTON MOUNTAIN SCHOOL AND ITS ATHLETES

Britt Wohler, 2007 SMS Alumnus

When you are an SMS student athlete, competing and pursuing excellence in your sport, you don’t realize the full impact that this school culture, discipline, and demands will have on your life beyond ski racing.
• 6:00 am wake ups
• International travel

• Sending papers back to school at 11:59 PM from a local laundromat because it’s the only place in the Swiss town that has wifi… Looking back, it’s the foundation that has led me to success in both work and life.
This became evident during my 10 years in NYC Real Estate at some of the most prestigious firms, where I had over $470,000,000 in Closed Sales. Having experienced mental and physical challenges, long days of training and competition, passion and adversity while attending SMS, I was prepared for the work force where drive and continual pursuit of excellence are paramount.
For me, working in Manhattan Real Estate beginning in 2010, I found that preparing for a large pitch and presentation seemed less daunting. I had experienced the demands, high expectations and pressures before.
Covid brought me back to Vermont where I thought I would be working remotely for a few months. Like others, I reconnected and fell in love with the Vermont mountain lifestyle and the family business – Wohler Realty Group.

Once again, I’m still a motivated competitor – driven to help expand the success of Wohler Realty Group, which had over $118,000,000 in sales during 2022 and I continue to oversee our partnership with Brown Harris Stevens and BHS Partnering Worldwide – a global real estate sales platform.

It’s great to be back at The SMS Ball in person – reminiscing. The fundamentals that were instilled in me and the friendships that were forged at SMS last a lifetime!

SIMON JACQUI
A key financial foundation for any school is a robust endowment. Endowments safeguard the School through fluctuating economic conditions. Established in 2004, the Stratton Mountain School Endowment Fund currently stands at $3.3M and is earmarked for the long-term financial health of the School and to provide need-determined financial aid for deserving student-athletes.
Founded by Warren Hellman and Donald Tarinelli in 1972, Stratton Mountain School celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. SMS has grown from a small school housed in the Hellman and Tarinelli chalets, to the Hotel Tyrol, and finally to our beautiful 10-acre campus. From its inaugural class of 7 to the current enrollment of 146, SMS is proud of our 120 National Team members, 75 Olympians, and remarkable college placement record.
The Hellman-Tarinelli Society honors the Hellman and Tarinelli families’ foresight and generosity and recognizes donors who make a gift to the SMS endowment of $2022 or greater. Members will be invited to an annual reception hosted at SMS by the Board of Trustees and Head of School. Endowment donors will also be acknowledged in Stratton Mountain School publications, online platforms, and in on-campus signage.
Investing in the SMS endowment by joining The Hellman-Tarinelli Society demonstrates a commitment to ensuring our school’s future. It is an opportunity for our community – alumni, parents, past parents, Stratton homeowners, and friends of the School – to create a lasting legacy and support SMS students for generations to come.
Please contact Amie Smith, in the SMS Advancement Office, at asmith@gosms.org to learn more about The Hellman-Tarinelli Society and to join today.
