WELCOME Dear SMS Community On behalf of the SMS Winter Ball Committee, we welcome you to the 2021 Virtual Winter Ball “Around the Globe”! Since its inception in 1972, SMS has established an outstanding record of producing Olympic level athletes. Our athletes travel around the globe to train and attend competitions. The Around the Globe theme for this year’s ball is appropriate since not only do we have athletes traveling as much as possible, parents will be attending this event, virtually, from around the globe. Our efforts and your generosity honor this tradition, but more importantly, they provide scholarships and opportunities to our students, giving them the ability to participate in our extraordinary academic and athletic environment.

The continuous support and encouragement that our committee received from parents, faculty, staff, coaches, and friends of the SMS community are truly heartwarming. I could not have hoped for a more positive experience in these uncertain times.

The generosity of the many businesses both within Southern Vermont and outside of our local area made this event possible. We encourage you to bid high and bid often on our many outstanding auction items, and please pay it forward by showing these businesses your support throughout the year.

WELCOME FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Winter Ball Guests, Welcome to our first-ever virtual Winter Ball. Tonight, we dedicate the Winter Ball to the members of our community from Around the Globe. By opting for a virtual event, we have brought together members of our incredible community from all corners of the planet in support of the Stratton Mountain School Scholarship Fund. This evening’s festivities will be unlike any other SMS event you’ve experienced before, and I am incredibly grateful to those who helped make it a reality.

The experience Stratton Mountain School provides is singularly unique and second to none.

Thanks to the lessons learned during their time here, many of our students and graduates have achieved amazing things. At this precise moment, our alumni are preparing to compete in World Cups, X-Games, and Junior Worlds, all of which are happening “around the globe”.

Also at this moment, our graduates are successfully engaged in business, law, and the medical professions so essential to the world today.

By joining us this evening, you are helping many talented student-athletes gain the opportunity to experience all that SMS has to offer. Nearly 45% of our families receive needbased financial aid, and the amount raised at this year’s Winter Ball will help to make their dreams come true. All from the comfort of your own home!

WELCOME FROM THE BOARD Dear SMS Community, On behalf of the Stratton Mountain School Board of Trustees, welcome to the Winter Ball. For over 50 years, the SMS community has gathered each January to celebrate our spectacular students and staff. This year, we’ve reimagined what it looks like to host this signature event in a way that is safe for our entire community, and I thank you for supporting that effort by joining us virtually tonight. The theme of this year’s Winter Ball is, fittingly, “Around the Globe.” Stratton Mountain School has long welcomed students from many countries, and our community is the richer for it.

While we all wish we could gather together in the Greg Needell Gymnasium, your donations tonight still support one of our highest priority initiatives: the Scholarship Fund. Nearly 45% of SMS students receive need-based financial aid. The Winter Ball is an important part of our efforts to welcome to SMS the most talented students from a variety of backgrounds. The collective support of our community is a vote of confidence in the mission of our wonderful school. Large, small, or somewhere in between, your support matters, so please give as generously as you can tonight.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to the teachers, coaches, and staff for their hard work to ensure our children are learning and flourishing during these challenging times. I know our entire community appreciates your efforts as you have all gone above and beyond this year.

Around the Globe Cooking Class Take your culinary skills to the next level in a private cooking class with Chef Kelly McNabb.

Kelly is a classically trained chef who has worked at the famous 21 Club, TV Food Network, and as the private chef to the British Ambassador to France. A basket filled with Kelly’s favorite “tools of the trade” completes this item.
